MARTIN BOYLE AGREES NEW DEAL!

W 2023.

ednesday was a day to remember as we were able to confirm a new contract for Martin Boyle that will run until the summer of

Martin – whose existing deal was due to expire next June – has been rewarded for his influence and performance on and off the pitch, as a key member of the side that currently sits joint top of the Scottish Premiership table after a strong start to the season. The winger initially moved to Easter Road on loan from Dundee in January 2015 and a permanent deal followed in June, such was the impression he made in a short space of time and it’s been a story of consistent improvement ever since. A member of the squad who wrote their place in the history books with the 2016 Scottish Cup triumph, Martin’s nine goals in the following campaign went a long way to helping secure promotion back to the topflight. Now an established Australian international, Martin displayed real perseverance to battle back from a serious knee injury to pick up where he left off – making life difficult for opposition defences up and down the country. Martin said: “I’m really pleased to have signed the new contract and it’s no secret what the club means to me and my family.

4

HIBERNIANFC.CO.UK

“It was only yesterday that Rachael signed her own deal with Hibernian Women, and it was an easy decision for the pair of us to make. “I was in the away dressing room at Easter Road earlier for some photography. The last time I was there was 10 years ago as a Montrose player. It’s been some journey since, and I still think my best years are ahead of me. “I had some really positive conversations with Ron, Leeann, Graeme and the gaffer and it should be obvious how much we’re all enjoying our football just now. The results probably speak for themselves. “We’ve given ourselves something to build on for the rest of the season and I’d love to add a few more highs to the ones I’ve already enjoyed.” Head Coach Jack Ross said: “I’ve said often enough how much I value Martin’s contribution to the team, but I think that extends to the whole club. “He’s a larger than life character. It’s easy to dismiss that as a laugh and a joke but it’s the kind of thing that can pull others along when the going gets tough. “Martin also works incredibly hard on his game and that shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s matured into a player of real quality.” Head over to Hibs TV and our YouTube channel for our exclusive catch-up with Martin.

MALCOLM McPHERSON RETURNS TO EASTER ROAD We strengthened our team off the park as well this week with the return of former club chairman Malcolm McPherson as a non-executive director. Malcolm agreed to take up the position at the invitation of chairman Ronald J. Gordon, which was extended with the unanimous support of the board. Malcolm previously served on the board from 1998–2002, and as chairman from 1999-2002. A leading corporate lawyer with Addleshaw Goddard, Malcolm is a highly respected figure in the Edinburgh and Scottish business community. With more than three decades of senior experience, he has advised many companies at strategic level and on dealmaking. He has vast experience as a nonexecutive director and has served as chairman of many businesses and organisations. Ron Gordon said: “I am very pleased that Malcolm has accepted our invitation to join the board. He brings terrific legal and business experience and has a real passion for the club. I know he will be a great contributor to the board as we take forward our vision for the club.” Malcolm added: “I am delighted and proud to have been invited to join the board as we enter this new and exciting time in the club’s development. I’ve met with Ron many times, and have been very impressed with his ambitions for our club and the energy and passion that he brings. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the board.” Malcolm is a non-executive director of many successful Scottish companies with a particular focus on fundraising and corporate affairs advice. He is a past vice chairman of the Scottish Solicitors’ Discipline Tribunal and is currently a Judicial Panel Chairman for the Scottish Football Association. Malcolm is also a principal fundraiser for the Edinburgh-based Headway charity group.

HIBERNIAN WOMEN ENJOY PRE-SEASON BOOST Hibernian Women were boosted through the week after a core of talented players agreed new contracts ahead of the 2020/21 Scottish Women’s Premier League season. The new deals range in length from 18 to 24 months. The players committing their future to Hibernian include club captain Joelle Murray, Rachael Boyle, Siobhan Hunter, Colette Cavanagh, Ellis Notley, Leah Eddie, Shannon McGregor, Amy Gallacher, Lia Tweedie and Amy Muir. Recent summer signing Charlotte Potts also signed a long-term contract when joining the club. One of those involved in securing the deals is General Manager, Stewart McGuire who spoke about what this means for the club. Stewart said: “We are in the midst of preparing for the start of the SWPL season. We are excited about the challenges ahead with this squad of talented players. “We go into the season with a strong squad to compete and I know that Dean and his team are looking forward to the year ahead.” Head Coach, Dean Gibson also gave his thoughts on the announcement, adding: “Getting the players signed up to longer term contracts is a great achievement for the club. “It shows great ambition from the board but also shows that the players buy

into what we are trying to achieve as a football club. We are on a journey and hopefully this shows we are going to go from strength to strength. “From the coaching staff’s point of view, it’s excellent we are now in a position to do this as it now gives us a bit of breathing space and lets us plan to build for the next couple of years. “I am really optimistic about the next period of the club’s future and we will do our upmost to make it a successful one.”

HOME STRIPS AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER The fastest-selling home strip in our history is now available again to preorder in senior sizes. Worn with pride by Jack Ross’ Premiership table-toppers, a portion of sales are also going to aid hard-working NHS staff as part of the club’s commitment to helping our frontline heroes. We’ve loved seeing so many of you tag us in your new strip pictures across social media and now more of you will get the chance to join in, with delivery from this next batch estimated to arrive in early October. Remember, if you ever have any questions relating to the Clubstore, please email info@hiberniandirect.co.uk.

JOIN OUR KEEPIE-UPPIE CHALLENGE! Time’s running out if you want to register for our keepie-uppie fundraising challenge for supporters to take part in and raise money for Edinburgh & Lothians Health Foundation – the official charity partner of NHS Lothian. The aim of the challenge is for fans to do a minimum of 50 keepie uppies a day for five days, and collectively achieve a target of 20,421 keepie uppies over the month of August. That’s one keepie uppie for every seat in Easter Road Stadium. Fans can get involved by signing up on the event registration site and setting up a personal fundraising page, where they can ask friends and family to sponsor them to take part, or join the challenge themselves. Final keepie uppie totals can then be submitted to Edinburgh and Lothian’s Health Foundation - who will keep a tally and issue regular progress updates through their website and social media. The challenge is open to fans of all abilities, with the option to choose how they complete their 50 keepie uppies a day; they can be done all in one go, or as chunks of five or ten. For those who feel they have mastered the art of keepie uppie, they can challenge themselves to do a bit more, setting an increased daily target and trying to beat their personal best. Fans are being encouraged to share videos and images of them taking part, helping to raise awareness of the campaign and raise as much money as possible to support the health and wellbeing of NHS Lothian staff as they face ongoing challenges and pressures as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

6

HIBERNIANFC.CO.UK

The challenge marks the start of the seasonlong fundraising partnership with Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation following the launch of the new strip in April with the Thank You NHS logo on the front of the shirts. The club decided to take the opportunity to express the thanks of the entire Hibernian football community to the magnificent health service for their heroic, selfless and dedicated efforts of its staff during the Coronavirus pandemic. Fans could then opt to pay £5.00 to have the transfer on their own replica shirts. All the money raised through the transfers will be donated to Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation, providing vital funds to put in place ongoing packages of support for staff who have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The first consignment of strips was sent out in July, with the next round of strips due to be issued in September. Whilst the first peak of the pandemic has passed, it has not gone away, and Hibs will be undertaking further fundraising throughout the season, with the football club expecting to hand over a six-figure donation by the end of the season. All fans are invited to participate in fundraising and donate whatever they can to help fund more initiatives to look after the wellbeing of the heroic NHS staff during and in the recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic. stand-out in a team that sits joint-top of the Scottish Premiership and a defence that’s yet to concede from open play, it’s no wonder Ryan Porteous is again being talked about for a senior Scotland call-up.

10

HIBERNIANFC.CO.UK

Only injury prevented the Hibernian Academy graduate from being able to make the most of a first invitation to Steve Clarke’s squad but – if the first few weeks of this new season are anything to go by – he’s a man in a hurry to make up for lost time.

vs ABERDEEN | 30/08/20

RYAN, YOU LOOK LIKE A MAN WHO IS ENJOYING YOUR FOOTBALL AT THE MOMENT. I think the results speak for themselves. First and foremost, that’s what’s most important. We’ve always had a great bond within the squad but we have felt good about things since we met back up in the summer for pre-season training. It’s hard to put your finger on one thing and that’s probably because it doesn’t come down to one thing. Basically, the staff work hard every day to do as much as they can to help us do what we do. The gaffer and John Potter make it an enjoyable place to play and the training’s competitive. As a team we’re working hard for each other and getting the rewards for it. On a personal level, I’m loving being back out there. Between the injury and the break in play during lockdown I really missed it. It’s not something I think I ever took for granted but I definitely appreciate every minute of it now.

HOW DIFFICULT WAS YOUR SPELL ON THE SIDELINES? I think I’ve been lucky in that when I’ve been out injured I’ve had people like Martin Boyle and Jason Naismith to help me get through it. They were going through their own rehabilitation processes and anyone who is injured will tell you it helps having someone there with you on a daily basis. The same goes for the staff at HTC. It came at a bad time with the Scotland call-up and an important period for Hibs but it’s part of the game. The lockdown period meant that I didn’t miss that much football in the end and I feel stronger than ever now, physically and probably mentally for the experience.

TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR TEAMMATES THAT HAVE HELPED US ENJOY A ROCK-SOLID START TO THE SEASON DEFENSIVELY. The first thing I should say is that we defend from the front. I know people will talk about a back four or five but that’s probably a bit unfair as it starts from the strikers and everyone has their part to play. The gaffer reinforces that and he’s right. In terms of the defence, I think everyone realises what an impact Alex Gogic has made, even this early. He’s a powerful guy and does a lot of unselfish work in midfield to protect the backline and stop counter attacks. Paul McGinn is someone who seems to go under the radar when it comes to getting credit but he’s definitely someone who is appreciated within the club. His decision making and reading of the game is excellent. He never seems to have a bad game. It’s crazy to think that Paul Hanlon was someone I grew up admiring as a young supporter and now I get the chance to learn from him every week and now I feel like an old head beside Josh Doig. I could just as easily talk all day about David Gray, Darren

McGregor and Lewis Stevenson – but I think everyone knows what they bring to the club, on and off the pitch.

YOU MENTIONED JOSH AND HE IS SOMEONE WHO YOU’VE OBVIOUSLY TAKEN UNDER YOUR WING. When the lockdown restrictions eased we did a bit of training together and it was obvious Josh put in the work over the break to give himself the best possible chance to come back and make a good impression. It’s easy to forget that he’s only 18. I think the best thing I can say about him is that he hasn’t seemed fazed by anything so far. He just takes it in his stride. I’ve said to him that there will come a point when he has a bad game or gets a bit of criticism and that will be a new experience for him to deal with, but he’s been great so far. He’s also the first to tell you what a great influence Lewis has been on him.

WHAT ABOUT THE VISIT OF ABERDEEN? We’ve had a good start to the season but that’s all it’s been – a good start. Aberdeen are a club that year in, year out finish where we’d like to be – in a position to qualify for European football. They’ve sent the benchmark for clubs like us to reach. I don’t think there’s ever much between the teams and last season probably proved that. It’s to their credit that they always seem to find a way to dig out results, even if they’re not at their best. That’s a mentality that I think we’ve shown ourselves so far. It’ll be a good game and it’s one we’re all looking forward to. These are the games you want to test yourself in and that will help shape the season.

WE KNOW YOU’RE A ‘ONE GAME AT A TIME’ MAN BUT TALK US THROUGH YOUR PERSONAL AMBITIONS. A year ago, I said I didn’t feel I’d done enough to wear the number five on my back given some of the great players who have worn it at this club. So I want to grow into that and do it justice this year. I feel fit, strong and that I’m improving all the time. I’d love to see us qualify for Europe and have a right go in the cup competitions. That’s what we should be aspiring for year in, year out so we’ll see where it takes us. Like every other player in the country the national team’s also an ultimate ambition. I’m always proud to meet up with the Under-21s but the coach Scot Gemmill is quick to remind us that the pathway is there for those of us to go all the way if we do enough to deserve it. So that’s in the back of my mind but that only comes from doing well for Hibs. It’s maybe a boring answer but my focus is on Aberdeen. If you look after training and matches on a daily basis then the rest hopefully takes care of itself.

DEREK MCINNES Our own Jack Ross is the first to compliment Derek McInnes whenever asked, with the pair enjoying a relationship that developed when Jack was making his way as a young manager at Alloa. McInnes has consistently built and rebuilt teams that seem ideally suited for the hustle and bustle of the Scottish game – with a strong core of dependable talent. He can also take credit for the development of striker Sam Cosgrove, who was a bargain signing from Carlisle United and now has a valuation in the millions if recent speculation is to be believed.

C AP TA IN

JOE LEWIS Can you remember many, if any, howlers from the Aberdeen goalkeeper and captain? It’s a struggle and that says a lot in a position of fine margins. Lewis has been a consistently excellent performer for Aberdeen and is the rock that their rigid defence is built upon. He is particularly strong at claiming crosses, which Hibernian’s wide players will no doubt bear in mind on Sunday evening.

K E Y PL AY ER

LEWIS FERGUSON There are more than a few deserving of the title of ‘Key Player’ at Aberdeen but Scotland Under-21 midfielder Lewis Ferguson perhaps just edges it. The former Hamilton prospect is a great mix of craft and graft and caught the eye almost instantly at Pittodrie with a stunning acrobatic finish in a Europa League qualifier against Burnley. A player who will need to be shackled at Easter Road. 20

Aberdeen moved to within a point of third-placed Motherwell in the Premiership after coming from behind to beat 10man Hibernian.
