THE BIG INTERVIEW

DAVID GRAY

SPONSORED BY

vs LIVINGSTON | 21 /04/21

lasting legacy at Hibs is already assured after his heroics at Hampden in 2016, but defender David Gray is far from finished yet.

With his current Hibs contract running through to 2023, it’s clear he’s determined to play his part in securing more success for the Edinburgh side.

The right-back etched himself into Easter Road folklore forever more when he was captain of the first Hibs side to win the Scottish Cup in 114 years, scoring a stoppage-time winner over Rangers to send the Hibees faithful delirious.

How has the season been for you so far?

A

Fast forward almost five years, the 32-year-old may not have had as many appearances on the pitch as he would like this term but his influence on Hibs’ successful season to date cannot be underestimated. A calm head with a wealth of experience under his belt, Gray has been a mentor to many of the younger players around him yet has been ready to step in at a moment’s notice.

At the start of the season we always set ourselves targets and the goals were to finish in Europe and try win a trophy and there’s a real possibility that we can do that. We’ve been brilliant in the league and it could be a fantastic season. In terms of game time, it’s been frustrating for myself because you want to play as often as you can and the positive I can take from the season is that I’ve been fit all season, I’ve been training really well, and the motivation I’ve got is to try and stay as fit as I can and when I’m called upon I’m able to step in and do a job.

I try to be as good as I can and work as hard as I can, and hopefully that will rub off on the group as a whole as well. There’s more than one way to add value to the group. It’s all about having a strong end to the season and finishing as well as we possibly can. What’s it been like with competition for places in the starting lineup so fierce? The defence as a whole has done really well so it makes the manager’s job easy if they are playing consistently well and you’ve got a settled defence. But you’ve also got boys like myself and Darren (McGregor) who are pushing them hard and making sure they know that if they drop their standard then they aren’t guaranteed a place and there are people ready to fill in. That’s what we’ve been working towards all season and I think we’re getting the benefit from that in the games. Every single day I try to push myself as much as I can and I know that although I might have to wait for an injury or a suspension to get an opportunity, I have to be ready. I have to be ready to take that chance and one, stay in the team, and two, do myself justice and perform at the level required and the standard that the boys have set. All the coaching staff have worked on being a good defensive unit, and I think that shows. Even if I’ve not played I still feel a massive part of it and part of the squad – it’s a real close bunch of boys. Would I like more game time? Absolutely. It’s something I’ve not been used to. I might get frustrated on the Sunday morning and I’ve not played, but my attention quickly changes to Monday and getting back on the training pitch. I’m not happy to be not playing, but I don’t think any player should be happy with that. But it’s not the case I’ve got a certain amount of time left on my contract and I’ll see it out: I’m still fit, I’m still contributing and I’m desperate to get back in the team. I back myself to do that and that’s what’s driving me forward. My future can wait until the end of the season – the most important thing at the moment is that as a group we go and do what we set out to do at the start of the season. You of course left Hearts at a young age to sign for Manchester United. With talk about some of the Hibs players attracting interest from other clubs, what’s your advice to some of these guys? If the opportunity comes then it’s because these boys are doing something very right at the minute. They’ve had fantastic seasons and they’ve managed to keep that standard and consistency, especially at such a young age, and that’s credit to them. My advice would always be is that sometimes an opportunity comes along

I’M DESPERATE TO GET BACK IN THE TEAM.

that is too good to turn down, but at the same time the most important thing is to be playing. The exposure they’ve had in the top league in Scotland has been great, but they have also been excellent at this level. They’ve been attracting a lot of attention so they are obviously doing something right, but they are good lads and also understand the dressing room around them. As long as the young boys are happy and performing as well as they can, opportunities will come. Hibs is a fantastic place to be and if you can get into the first team then opportunities arise. There’s more than one way to make your way in the game. Someone like John McGinn came to Hibs and he’s now one of Scotland’s best players and playing week in, week out in the Premier League in England. I’m sure John would admit this as well but when you are making decisions about your future, knowing you are going to be happy and knowing you are going to be valued goes a long, long way. The platform is there to go and build your career and make your way in the first team at Hibs. The facilities are great and the management team are great. Just because you move, whether it be 16, 18 or 23, you’ve still got to work as hard as you possibly can because it’s never just given to you. If you think you are doing well and you stand still, everyone else will catch up with you. I’m a firm believer in that, so it’s about progressing all the time. We can’t not mention your Scottish Cup winner can we? Has the magnitude of it sunk in at all yet? Whilst I’m still playing, I don’t know if the magnitude of it has sunk in. It’s when you speak to people who say they’ve been to nine finals and never thought they’d see the day, that’s when it sinks in a little bit. I think when I stop playing completely, myself and the other players involved will be able to take a step back and realise what we did and how great an achievement was it. But while I’m still playing, I’m still hungry for more rather than thinking that was enough and I’ll stop on that. It’s the thing you dream about as a young boy playing in the park. Scoring the winner in the last minute of the cup final, 2-1 down with 10 minutes to go and to come back and score in the last minute and win 3-2. It’s Roy of the Rovers stuff, so I’m very, very fortunate that I was a part of it, and very grateful that we were able to go on and do it. Everyone involved with it deserves a lot of credit.

THE OPPOSITION

LIVINGSTON With one win a-piece and a draw between the sides already this season, something has to give when Livingston visit Easter Road this evening. Superb early season form saw them amass enough points to secure a top six finish and, although they shipped six to Celtic in their first post-split fixture, Livi will keen to end the 2020/21 campaign strongly and finish as high up the table as possible. Their European hopes have all but been extinguished, but holding on to fifth spot will be their priority with St Johnstone breathing down their necks. M A NAGER

DAVID MARTINDALE Long-standing assistant David Martindale earned the top job on merit after stepping in following the resignation of Gary Holt. After a run of four wins as interim boss, his appointment as permanent manager was followed up by four more league victories, two draws against Celtic, and a run to the League Cup Final. That sort of impact saw many people in Scottish football sit up and take notice, and shrewd operator Martindale has made a name for himself in his own right.

C AP TA IN

MARVIN BARTLEY Everyone at Hibs is well aware of Marvin Bartley’s influence, having been an important player in our run to the 2016 Scottish Cup and a member of the squad that day at Hampden. Big Marv moved from Hibs to Livingston where his leadership qualities quickly earned him the armband. A tough, uncompromising opponent – but always a welcome one here at Easter Road.

K E Y PL AY ER

JAY-EMMANUEL-THOMAS The striker known as JET has certainly made an impact during his time at Livi. The Arsenal Academy graduate can play as a winger or striker and cites Gunners legend Thierry Henry as one of his main influences, learning from the Frenchman during his time at the Emirates. Only 30-years-old, the forward will no doubt add to his tally between now and the end 18

The two Lothian sides thrashed out a 1-1 draw almost exactly a month ago as both sought to keep their hopes of European football alive. Livi took a deserved lead in the 29th minute at the Tony Macaroni Arena through Craig Sibbald on the day, but Christian Doidge pounced on a defensive mishap at the back to pull Hibs level just before the break. The visitors had the better chances in the second period to wrap up all three points, with Doidge and Boyle both seeing their efforts cleared off the line, but both sides had to settle for a point each. Against a tough side away from home, Jack Ross called it a “good point” at the time, and Hibs are now well-placed to claim third spot in the table.
