AWAY STRIP UPDATE Our small, hard-working team in the Clubstore are in the final stages of working their way through the initial delivery of pre-ordered home kits. As a result, they’ve now started to sift through away kit pre-orders. If you opted for ‘click and collect’, please wait for an email before making the trip to the Clubstore. Staff can’t make every click and collect order available in one go while they operate under the health and safety guidelines laid down by the Scottish Government. We’re delighted so many of you like the new strips and please tag our social media accounts if you’ve take a picture or two!

HIBEES LEARN BETFRED CUP FATE The draw for the group stage of the Betfred Cup took place this week and we’re set for a reunion with a few familiar faces. The Hibees have been drawn against Dundee, Forfar Athletic, Brora Rangers and Cove Rangers, with our Scottish Cup-winning manager from 2016, Alan Stubbs, doing the honours at Hampden. Dundee are managed by former Hibs captain James McPake, while another 2016 hero – Fraser Fyvie – pulls the strings for Paul Hartley’s Cove Rangers. We’ll have news on confirmed match details soon.

ADAM JACKSON JOINS LINCOLN CITY Adam Jackson has completed a permanent transfer to Lincoln City for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance, with Hibernian holding an interest in any future sale. The 26-year-old centre-back moved to Easter Road last summer and appeared 22 times in total for The Hibees, scoring four goals. Adam featured more prominently towards the end of last season, performing well in the heart of defence. He’d expressed a desire to return to England and we were able to accommodate that request. We’d like to thank Adam for his efforts and wish him all the best for his new challenge

JOIN OUR KEEPIE-UPPIE CHALLENGE! This week we launched our keepie uppie fundraising challenge for supporters to take part in and help raise money for Edinburgh & Lothians Health Foundation, the official charity partner of NHS Lothian. The aim of the challenge is for fans to do a minimum of 50 keepie uppies a day for five days, and collectively achieve a target of 20,421 keepie uppies over the month of August. That’s one keepie uppie for every seat in Easter Road Stadium.

The challenge marks the start of the seasonlong fundraising partnership with Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation following the launch of the new strip in April with the Thank You NHS logo on the front of the shirts. The club decided to take the opportunity to express the thanks of the entire Hibernian football community to the magnificent health service for their heroic, selfless and dedicated efforts of its staff during the Coronavirus pandemic. Fans could then opt to pay £5.00 to have the transfer on their own replica shirts.

Fans can get involved by signing up on the event registration site and setting up a personal fundraising page, where they can ask friends and family to sponsor them to take part, or join the challenge themselves. Final keepie uppie totals can then be submitted to Edinburgh and Lothian’s Health Foundation - who will keep a tally and issue regular progress updates through their website and social media.

All the money raised through the transfers will be donated to Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation, providing vital funds to put in place ongoing packages of support for staff who have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The challenge is open to fans of all abilities, with the option to choose how they complete their 50 keepie uppies a day; they can be done all in one go, or as chunks of five or ten. For those who feel they have mastered the art of keepie uppie, they can challenge themselves to do a bit more, setting an increased daily target and trying to beat their personal best.

Whilst the first peak of the pandemic has passed, it has not gone away, and Hibs will be undertaking further fundraising throughout the season, with the football club expecting to hand over a six-figure donation by the end of the season. All fans are invited to participate in fundraising and donate whatever they can to help fund more initiatives to look after the wellbeing of the heroic NHS staff during and in the recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic.

Fans are being encouraged to share videos and images of them taking part, helping to raise awareness of the campaign and raise as much money as possible to support the health and wellbeing of NHS Lothian staff as they face ongoing challenges and pressures as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

JOSH

DOIG SPONSORED BY

F

ew could have predicted the rapid rise of 18-yearold Josh Doig this early in the season, but the Hibs kid is taking it all in his stride. There can be no higher compliment for a left-back at Hibernian than to get a game ahead of modern-day club legend Lewis Stevenson. While he initially emerged as a central midfielder, Lewis has pretty much had that roving role in defence nailed down since he made his debut back in 2005 – along the way

10

HIBERNIANFC.CO.UK

becoming the only player in the club’s history to win both the League and Scottish Cup in the green and white. Still an integral part of the squad, Lewis has had to cool his heels on the bench so far in the league – such has been the form of Josh since the first day of pre-season training. He has all the respect in the world for a team-mate who has been a great source of support on a daily basis, on and off the pitch, but he’s in no mood to hand back the starting berth any time soon.

vs MOTHERWELL | 15/08/20

JOSH, THE LAST FEW WEEKS MUST HAVE BEEN PRETTY SPECIAL FOR YOU? It’s been great. Like everyone else, the lockdown period was hugely frustrating so I just tried to do what I could to keep myself ticking over. I wouldn’t say it made me miss football because I never took it for granted, but I was delighted to get back to HTC and it was great to be invited to train with the first-team squad. I had a run-out this time last year but I felt much more involved this time around and I just tried to do my best to give the gaffer something to think about.

SO WHAT’S CHANGED IN A YEAR? It’s hard to narrow it down to one thing. I’ve probably filled out a bit and a year’s extra experience training alongside the players and staff here has brought me on leaps and bounds. I also have to say thanks to everyone at Queen’s Park. Although it was a short loan spell in the end, given everything that happened in the world, I took so much from it. It gave me the confidence that I could go and compete in senior football and I enjoyed the competitive side of it. Being able to play at Hampden was a bonus and hopefully I can get back there sometime soon with Hibs. It’s definitely something I’d recommend to any young player. When I got back to training here I felt better equipped to really give it a go.

DID YOU GET AN EARLY IDEA THAT YOU MIGHT BE INVOLVED? I was hopeful but didn’t want to assume anything given the quality of player we have here. I wasn’t looking any further ahead than just doing well in training and hopefully carrying that into the bounce games. I think taking it a day at a time has helped, even if that’s a cliche. I’ve just tried to leave it all on the pitch. Ryan Porteous was good for some advice over the summer on little things that would help my game, like being dedicated to the strength and conditioning routines and one of the coaches did say that I looked like I’d put on a bit of muscle in the time I’ve been out. I’m not being knocked about quite as much now!

H I B E R N I A N FO OT B A LL C LU B

WE SAY THIS A LOT BUT WE’RE LUCKY TO HAVE A GREAT DRESSING ROOM, FULL OF EXPERIENCED PLAYERS. WHO ELSE HAS BEEN GOOD FOR YOU IN THAT REGARD? I think most of the young boys will say the same but all of the first team squad are very approachable and are happy to take time out to help you. The same goes for the gaffer, Potts and the rest of the staff at HTC. It’s a great environment to help you improve. I would like to thank Lewis Stevenson, in particular. Again, everyone always says the same things about Lewis but it’s the truth. There’s not a better, harderworking professional anywhere and it’s no wonder he’s achieved what he has for the club. I learn a lot just from watching him but he’s been amazing with me – constantly giving me little bits of advice. I couldn’t ask for a better role model in my position. Everyone could see how important he was in the win over Kilmarnock as well when he came on. There was one point when he threw himself in front of a shot and fine lines like that can make all the difference.

WHAT WAS YOUR HEAD LIKE GOING INTO THAT KILMARNOCK GAME? THE FIRST GAME OF THE NEW SEASON ISN’T THE WORST TIME TO MAKE YOUR COMPETITIVE DEBUT FOR THE CLUB. You obviously want to do well – for yourself, your family and for the team. Not least the staff who gave me an opportunity. I got a few early touches and I think that settled me down. After that it becomes just another game. I was up against Chris Burke and that was a great experience. He’s someone who just seems to get better with age and we both had our moments, getting the best of each other. I learned a lot and tried to take that into the games since.

JOSH DOIG ON GUIDANCE FROM SENIOR PLAYERS

H I B E R N I A N FO OT B A LL C LU B

THREE GAMES AND THREE WINS… It’s been amazing. No-one’s getting ahead of ourselves. It’s only a good start and we have to carry that on, starting with Motherwell, but it’s been great so far. As a defence it’s pleasing that we’ve not conceded a goal in open play. To be honest, that’s something the whole team can take credit for because we press from the front. Just as everyone plays their part in creating and scoring goals, though it does help to have guys like Christian and Kevin who you know will stick the chances away. We’re really enjoying ourselves, in training and in the matches, but, like I said, we know it’s early days.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM MOTHERWELL? If we want to be competing at the top end of the table and in the mix to qualify for Europe then Motherwell will be one of the teams to beat. They’re coming off the back of a great season and we all know they have good players throughout the team. But so do we and we want to give them something to think about. I think it’ll be a good game and it’s a shame the supporters won’t be there to enjoy it. I’m sure they’ll enjoy it from home.

YOU’VE HAD GREAT BACKING FROM THE SUPPORTERS. HOW MUCH HAS THAT HELPED? I’ve had a lot of nice messages on social media and I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to do that. It’s very kind of them but the gaffer’s good at keeping our feet on the ground. We’re not a great team when we win and we’re not a terrible team when we lose. If we do anything this season it’ll be because we’ve managed to be consistent. Hopefully we’ll give the supporters something to celebrate and they’ll be back with us soon at Easter Road.

STEPHEN ROBINSON Whenever a vacancy arises north or south of the border, it’s no surprise to see Stephen Robinson’s name linked with the post and it’s a measure of the success he enjoyed with The Steelmen last term. Robinson deserves credit for blending some genuine homegrown talent with some imaginative imports. ’Well fans got their money’s worth and can look forward to watching their side battle it out in the qualification stages of the Europa League.

DECLAN GALLAGHER Having taken on the captaincy following the departure of Peter Hartley, Declan Gallagher will be aiming to maintain his own rise to prominence that’s taken him from being a standout with Livingston to the senior Scotland squad. Commanding in the air and comfortable on the ball, he’ll relish going toe to toe with Christian Doidge and Kevin Nisbet.

DAVID TURNBULL Quite simply, the man who makes Motherwell tick when they’re in full flow. Perhaps still easing his way back to full fitness after a lengthy lay-off, there’s no denying the talent in Turnbull. So much so that Celtic were more than willing to hand over a reported £3-million fee to tempt him from Fir Park prior to his stint on the sidelines. An intelligent player who will need to be shackled this evening. 20

There was nothing between the sides last time out in a goalless draw at Fir Park. In a game of fine margins, the woodwork was tested as often as the goalkeepers. Motherwell sub Christy Mazinga drew a stunning stop from Ofir Marciano that shaved the crossbar while Florian Kamberi watched his header bounce back off the post at the other end. The result helped Motherwell strengthen their lead over Aberdeen in third to five points. OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGR AMME
