My freshman year I was on JV lacrosse and I watched my brother lose to Timber Creek by one point. My sophomore year we beat Timber Creek for the first time by one point. I didn’t contribute to the win, but I was glad to be part of the history. Junior year we beat them the first game of the season and I contributed to the easy win. Senior year comes around and they are back in our district. We play them expecting a close game, but a victory. We ended up winning 8-5 after they were down four at the first quarter. I contributed one goal and let my brother live vicariously through me claiming the district championship he should have won.
When Henry McClane and I were sophomores Henry was dating Emily Porterfield who was a junior. She stole the totem pole and bragged to Hank about it. Since he was a sophomore and tradition said only juniors and seniors could search for it Hank and I thought it would be funny if we took it. That way both classes would get mad at each other. We went to Emily’s and stole it no problem, then posted a picture of it on Instagram. The junior and senior classes freaked out. As we were taking it to hide Emily spotted it in the back of our car and we got in a car chase all down town with her and her friends. We eventually escaped them and hid it.
One memorable moment I’ve had in high school is when I met a really nice girl that I hope to marry one day. Her name is Nicole Neal and we are exactly the same. We can be stupid around each other. We agree on a lot and laugh at the same things. I never had a class with her. I started talking to her at lunch and my first impression of her was she is really good looking and from there our personalities clicked and the rest is history. My favorite memory of us was our year anniversary. We saw Oculus and hung out at Disney. We have been dating for a year and almost one month.

Freshman year I was living in Los Angeles for America’s got talent with my dance crew Studio One Young Beast Society. It was amazing living the famous life. One of my favorite memories was when I went to buy food in a place called Norms, which is similar to Denny’s and the manager noticed me from the show. I got all the food for free every time my team and I went there.
My most embarrassing moment is when I started crying in front of Mr. Floyd at the beginning of the school year because I got an F due to silly mistakes I made. It was the first test and I got a 30-something, but he said it was a “good F” because it was only silly mistakes. He also told me that I’ll pull my grade up. I burst out crying and I’m still not sure why. Luckily it was before school so no one saw.
Freshman year after school I was waiting for volleyball to start and I was wearing a dress with my back pack on. I didn’t know it but my backpack was pulling up my dress in the back. An administrator told me to pull my dress down through a megaphone. The whole football team ended up seeing my butt. Since then, I’ve only worn a dress once to school.
In Ms. De La Cruz’s Spanish class I forgot my entire speech about Cinco De Mayo that I had memorized the night before for a presentation. I had to improvise in front of the whole class 10 minutes of how Mexican history affects the world today in Spanish. While I was presenting it was dead silent, which was the worst part about it. I ended up getting a C on it.
My most memorable class was Mrs. Liebman’s English class. It was filled with awesome people and we were always laughing. Something funny was happening no matter what, whether it be Danielle McGongial sleeping, me scaring Mrs. Liebman, Ele doing weird accents, Sal selling candy (illegally), Mike Hill talking about Obama or Nick Owens saying thank you after anyone was complimented.

My favorite memory would have to be in E2020 [a class where students get help if they did not score well on FCAT and need extra help] this year. I didn’t need to be in that class and neither did a few of my closest friends. It was a good time to be able to see them and finally be able to have a class with people I haven’t seen or had a class with in a long time.
My favorite memory of Boone is going to the Boone versus Edgewater basketball game. My best friend asked me to come and support him so I decided to go. I don’t usually go to the games since I work and all, but I went and it was one of my first major games I’ve been able to attend at Boone. I could feel the school spirit and pride throughout the whole gym; especially when we beat Edgewater.
When I was a junior it was really interesting seeing all the seniors in the senior snake dancing around and having fun while all of the underclassmen were stuck inside in the classroom. It made me look forward to being a senior and being able to be in the senior snake. Once you’re a senior you feel powerful. It was worth the wait through all four years to finally be in the snake.

In Chemistry in 10th grade, there was always crazy stuff going on in the classroom. Whether it was bending glass by flame and having my classmate burn his hand right after the teacher warned us not to touch it because it was hot, or when we launched rockets. When we launched ours it went to the right and crashed immediately while all the other rockets went straight up.

One of my favorite memories is in my biology class sophomore year when I met a group of about 10 people. At first it was really awkward because we didn’t know each other and there was awkward silence and eye contact. It was funny because within five minutes we all started talking and became instant friends. We are still best friends to this day.

Students enlist in military to fulfill goals By MEGHAN COTTON Training in the hot sun is just a way to stay in shape for students, but for seniors going into the military, it is preparing them for their careers. The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is a federal program sponsored by the Armed Forces in high schools across the United States. Originally created as part of the National Defense Act of 1916, it was later expanded under the 1964 ROTC Vitalization Act. First Sergeant Gustavus Wilson and Commander Craig Rouhier teach students the core values of honor, courage and commitment. “[The program] put me way ahead of the competition. They give you the knowledge you need to succeed,” senior Wesley Rodriguez said. Rodriguez will attend the Marine ROTC program at Savannah State University. After finishing four years of school, he will have a five-year contract with the Marine Corps. “I picked the Marine Corps because I felt like it would be the best way to give back to my country. It will also be a challenge,” Rodriguez said. Unlike Rodriguez, senior Mariah Brown is enlisting in the Navy once she graduates high school. Brown is following this path because the government will pay 100 percent of tuition and give her the benefits an enlisted Navy sailor receives including: free medical and dental insurance and a paycheck. She will attend a school of her choice after she has completed the
mandatory basic training. “I hope my experience involves meeting the indigenous people in the countries we visit and learning their culture. I hope there is never a dull day. I hope I get to do some crazy awesome stuff that most people only dream of,” Brown said. Brown is not the only student joining the military to pay for school. Senior Marie Gilles is enlisting in the Army so she can pay for law school. The Army guarantees a full ride to wherever Gilles is stationed. With an uncle and a brother in the Army, Gilles wanted to continue the family tradition, but her family did not support her at first. “My mom didn’t talk to me for two weeks because she didn’t want me to join,” Gilles said. Gilles expressed some nerves about going into the Army when she confessed that she did not think she was mentally prepared for boot camp, explaining how she is easily annoyed. Despite the nerves and the worries, all three seniors eagerly await the adventure to come. Having gone through this experience before, Commander Rouhier explains how a high school environment differs greatly from the more disciplined and orderly military environment. As a Naval Deviance instructor and former Naval aviator, Commander Rouhier feels he has prepared these students for what they will face in the real world based on his personal knowledge and experience of the military and the training involved. “The military is an equal playing field. No one gives you anything. You earn it all by yourself. Always lead from the front,” Rouhier said, regarding his advice to the young cadets.

By KALEY GILBERT There’s a certain image that comes to mind when one hears that someone is a valedictorian. Glasses. No social life. Chained to a textbook. In other words, a nerd, simple terms, convenient definitions. But nothing is further from the truth when it comes to the 2014 valedictorians. Instead, what one would see is a medley of clubs, sports and interests. They all have different backgrounds: a dancer, a lawyer, a swimmer, a runner, a tennis player, a doctor, a lax girl, a yerd, a cadet. Most of them are more than one of these. There was Math Club, National Honor Society and SGA, as well as Health Occupations Students of America and magnet programs, and Advanced Placement courses. Whatever their differences there was always one thing that united them: a drive to succeed and a self-reliance unmatched by the average student. Simplest terms and most convenient definitions, indeed.

Lewis places first By GABRIELLA FAKHOURY Graduating first in her class with a 5.1 weighted GPA Dakota Lewis has the highest grade point average out of the 10 valedictorians. “Personal drive instilled in me by my parents was my biggest motivation during high school to maintain my grades,” Lewis said. Lewis plans on attending the University of Alabama to major in biology and statistics. “The University of Alabama is the perfect fit for me because they see leading a balanced, happy life as having true success and I love that about Alabama,” Lewis said. Lewis started dual enrollment with Valencia Community College her junior year, racking up college credits and improving her GPA, while also attending high school on campus. “Physics at Valencia with Professor Young was my hardest
class. I studied every night and got lucky on some of my tests to maintain an A in the class,” Lewis said. Adding to her study load from Valencia, Lewis was also active in multiple clubs on campus, including math club, MU Alpha Theta and the Chemistry Club. She has also been a varsity swimmer and varsity water polo player since her freshman year. “My greatest personal struggle would be staying balanced. Sometimes going out and having fun is more important than staying home and studying because being happy is what creates success,” Lewis said. With a full plate of school clubs and sports, Lewis also spent her time volunteering at Pershing Elementary and was part of a mission leadership team. “[My biggest achievement aside from being a valedictorian, was] learning to be confident about who I am,” Lewis said.
