For the record

Valedictorians make history By JONATHAN WARREN

Principal Margaret McMillen said. According to Dr. McMillen, the decision to include all students with 4.0 unweighted GPA’s, rather than base the honor off of weighted GPA’s, is a simple issue. “One idea is that if you’ve kept all A’s through high school, that is commendable. [With the current graduation requirements], you can’t take all easy classes and get through high school. On the other hand, students who took the most rigorous courses available are also rewarded,” Dr. McMillen said. Because there are so many valedictorians, the students were given options regarding how to give their graduation speeches. “[The students and administration] have come up with a solution we think the seniors will enjoy,” Dr. McMillen said. Seniors will see the valedictorians’ solution at graduation on June 3.

Valedictorians

From a crowd of 641, they rose to the top. Navigating through piles of homework, tests and extracurricular activities, they finished first. For these 18 students, number one is not just a ranking, but also a manifestation of four years of hard work and dedication. “I think it’s an encouragement. It helps me know if I set my mind to something, I can achieve it,” valedictorian Anna Gentry said. Every year, valedictorians are celebrated for achieving a 4.0 GPA, but this class provided a twist on the traditional honor. Eighteen students will graduate first in the class of 2011, the largest number in campus history. lla Pelier, Vivien ne re “We have an amazing group Se , am th ea , to Talissa So r, fe FRONT: Kaitlin Ch Ho na of students who have very bright An 2: Brock. Tallahassee

Florida State University The Basics: Located near Georgia, the landscape, architecture, and atmosphere of Tallahassee has a southern charm and naturally picturesque appeal. The campus has a quaint, small town feel with a big population. The Dorms: Freshmen are required to live on campus their first year. The Residential Assistants in the dorms make sure residents acclimate well and find ways for everyone to get involved. Smith Hall is the least expensive dorm pricing at $2,150 per semester. The most expensive is Ragans Hall, individual apartments exclusively for upperclassman, which cost $3,120 a semester. The Nightlife: West Tennessee Street, 32304: This legendary street of clubs and bars is the number one place to hit when partying in Tallahassee. Commonly referred to as “The Strip” by FSU students, Tennessee Avenue includes the most affordable dinner specials and music from the best DJ’s in town. A.J.’s Sports Bar & Grill (1800 West Tennessee St., 32304): From Major League Baseball to the NFL, A.J.’s offers almost any televised game. The sports and entertainment venue on “The Strip” serves jumbo wings in 15 different flavors and handmade burgers. Restaurants: Gordos (1907 West Pensacola St., 32304): This college favorite serves delicious Cuban sandwiches under $ 9.50 and dinner dishes under $11.95. Things to do: Student Life Cinema: This free movie theatre, exclusively for FSU students, plays current blockbusters. Crenshaw Lanes: This on campus bowling alley includes Internet access and a lounge area. Cosmic bowling ($10) is held every Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m.- 2 a.m. Flying High Circus: A student run circus premieres each fall and has been a unique tradition since 1947. The dazzling performance rivals that of a professional show. Winter Wonderland: In December, snow is shipped in from Georgia and the campus creates a winter landscape with snow ball fights, hot chocolate and snow globe decorating. The Words From the Wise: “FSU as a university is not seen as a difficult school to get into, but the individual colleges like communications and studio art are very competitive. They are considered the top in the country, accepting only 30 students per program,” FSU freshman Nicole Regan said.

University of Florida The Basics: The UF campus is made up of 2,000 acres and more than 900 buildings holding 50,000 students. It is officially one the largest campuses in the nation. The Dorms: After completing the fall/spring contract, students submit preferences for up to three halls and two room types, along with two specific roommates. An alternative option to dorms is the rental rate. Rental rates are per student, per semester and include cable TV, high speed Internet, electricity and other utilities. All rooms are fully furnished. The Nightlife: Swamp (1642 W. University Ave.): This social night bar and patio is the definition of going out at UF. This popular sports bar features food like buffalo wings, burgers, tacos and seafood. It attracts the college crowd and always has an energetic atmosphere. Spannk (20 NW. 2nd St): This local club’s goal is to help make the discovery of local bands easier. Spannk aims to be the definition of upcoming shows and promotion for local bands. Restaurants: Dragonfly (3117 SW. 34th St.): This is a good choice for Asian food. Although a bit more expensive than average meal choices, it is worth it ($11 - $30). Leonardo’s (706 West University Avenue): This Italian specialty is less expensive and serves pizza along with other Italian cuisines ($10 - $15). The Peach Valley Cafe, 3275 SW 34th St: This cafe is highly recommended and serves only breakfast and lunch ($4 - 8). Things To Do: The Reitz Union (1080 SW. 11th St.): This is a major hangout for studying or grabbing something to eat. The Reitz Union contains several restaurants including Tijuana Flats, Pita Pit and Jimmy Johns Gourmet Sandwiches, a bookstore and a Starbucks. The Words From the Wise: “If you are a freshman, go to campus before the first day of classes so you don’t get lost or show up late to your classes,” sophomore Moises Diffo said.

University of South Florida The Basics: Opened in 1960, USF now teaches 47,000 students and is recognized as one of the top 100 public research universities. Restaurants: Taco Bus (913 E. Hillsborough Ave, 33604): Serving food 24/7, the Taco Bus provides authentic Mexican food. From vegetarian rice, bean and vegetable burritos and tacos to meaty quesadillas, fish tacos and barbacoas, a style of barbeque authentic to ancient Mexican recipes, the Taco Bus menu caters to guests with a wide variety of diets. ($5 - $8) CBD’s Southside Italian Restaurant and Bar (3671 S. Westshore Blvd., 33629): This area favorite serves classic Italian, from pizza to pasta ($25 - $30). Things To Do: Open only to USF students and staff, the Riverfront Park is a popular hangout on campus that offers free kayaking and canoeing. The Words From the Wise: “I would encourage living in dorms the first year. It’s the best way to meet people, and you have class with a lot of the same people in your [dorm area], so it’s easy to form study groups or find people to hang out with. There is always someone awake which makes it so convenient to meet friends,” USF sophomore Madison Smith said.

1. SING OUT. At the microphone, junior Tayler Buono sings “What Life’s About”, a song she wrote in honor of Laura Grant and Eddie Culberhouse, and dedicated to Elizabeth Harrison and Alisa Pelot. “I was really glad I got to sing that song to [the seniors] before they left because it meant a lot to me and to them [considering the loss the school has gone through],” Buono said. Buono was one of three acts at prom. 2. RAISE THE ROOF. On the dance floor, junior Veronica Kelly dances to a pop song with friend Arthur Ugalde. “I didn’t expect to have such a good time because I was forced to go to prom by one of my friends,” Kelly said. Kelly was especially impressed with the overall atmosphere of the hotel and enjoyed dancing with her friends. 3. SMILE FOR THE CAMERA. Before the dance, senior Sang Dang takes a picture with a group of his friends. “[Prom] was great because we danced and just had fun without any drama,” Dang said. Dang felt the quality of the DJ and the songs played made prom unique.

Story By ANNA MARIE BORIA Photos By SARA CASLER Blue and red lasers blazed through the fog spelling “Boone High School” in the back of the grand ballroom. After hours of preparation, students gathered to join together and experience one of the most memorable nights of high school. Prom 2011, “Fire and Ice”, was held at the Hilton Hotel on Hotel Plaza Boulevard, April 30. 662 students filled the ballroom containing fire and ice decor. Tickets were $70 for seniors, $80 for juniors and $90 for all other guests attending. “The theme ‘Fire and Ice’ came from our first meeting. It was chosen because it was two themes in one and it gave us more room to be creative,” Junior Class president Elizabeth McEwan said. The night included dancing and three student performances for entertainment, in addition to the annual senior video. Senior Kyle Parker Prosky, “K.P.P.”, rapped as students enjoyed an elegant dinner. Singer junior Tayler Buono, as well as senior Christian Maldonado with senior Yashira Lopez, “C Y We Live”, performed later in the evening. “[Prom] went above and beyond my expectations. It felt like I was treated so nicely. Everyone was polite, and it was so different from homecoming; it was just put together so well,” Buono said.

3

4. BABY PICS. Laughs are shared as junior Olivia Swartwood swaps baby pictures. One of Swartwood’s favorite part of the evening was the senior video. 5. BUST A MOVE. With hip hop playing in the background, senior Karl Soliven shows off his dance skills. “I was able to do wild things that no one else did,” Soliven said. His favorite part of prom was the large dance floor.

FIST PUMP. Seniors Kenneth Rolden from Cyprus Creek and Melina Countryman dance. “I liked how everyone was having a genuinely good time. It was great to see everyone’s crazy dance moves,” Countryman said. She felt the event was held at a nice place and liked how it ran very smoothly.

6. TRADITION PASSES ON. Nicholas Hall passes the senior drum to Junior Class vice president Yesenia Vazquez as the annual senior poem is being read. The senior drum symbolizes the passing on of authority to the future senior class. “It was my first prom and it was unforgettable for me, especially since the junior class organized it and everything went on schedule,” Vazquez said. She felt the lasers, songs and effects the DJ added made the night one to remember. 7. DANCE OFF. Senior Christian Maldonado shows off his dancing abilities while performing at prom as half of the duo known as “C Y We Live.” “It was awesome performing so close to the audience, they kept giving me more energy during the performance,” Maldonado said. Maldonado enjoyed dancing with friends and watching the senior video. 8. HANDS IN THE AIR. At the request of the DJ, senior Nicole Baird raises her hand while dancing in support of the senior class. “I had expected prom to be small and cramped, but it was a lot bigger and much more extravagant [than I expected],” Baird said. Baird’s favorite part of prom was getting to see everyone dressed up and seeing who took whom to prom.

9. DANCE. Assistant Principal Carlota Iglesias dances with senior Yearlord Jean Paul to a Latin inspired song. “I love to see [all the students] come nicely dressed. They don’t look like children; they look like young adults,” Iglesias said. She loved the spacious ballroom. 10. RAP OUT. Senior Kyle Parker Prosky raps “My Motivation” during his dinner performance. “I liked rapping at prom and bringing in that extra spark to the party,” Parker Prosky said. Parker Prosky’s favorite part of the night was performing at prom.

Good Luck Graduates

Experiences shape college outlook ACTIVITIES ALL SHOULD TRY BEFORE GRADUATING By TYLER PATRICK When the time comes for high school to end, people move on to bigger and better things through education in college. However, before becoming a college graduate one should consider trying these activities as a way to feel accomplished before heading off into the work force. 1. Visit England: As cliche as it sounds, traveling is one of the most eye-opening things an individual can do. It not only teaches one about a different culture, but shows what else the world has to offer through food, people and architecture. England is a great place for travelers to start because its people speak English, which allows for easy communication between the two parties. England is home to fascinating landmarks such as the London Eye and Buckingham Palace, home to British royalty Queen Elizabeth II and her family. England also presents a variety of foods to its visitors including Blood Pudding, Bangers and Mash (Sausage and Mashed Potatoes) and Fish n’ Chips. All these assets contribute to the reason England is a fantastic stop before getting one’s college degree. 2. Go Cage Diving with Sharks: After the release of the movie Jaws in 1975, the fear of sharks sky rocketed for people of all ages. One should realize however, that a fear of sharks

page 16

is irrational as long as the proper precautions are taken. Taking a risk such as diving into an ocean surrounded by sharks can be both exhilarating and awe-inspiring. It allows the diver to get up close and personal with one of the ocean’s most misjudged creatures in a safe atmosphere. Information on prices and locations for cage diving with sharks can be found at www.greatwhiteadventures.com. 3. Take a Road Trip from Florida to California: As presented in several m o v i e s ranging from Road Trip to Crossroads, traveling from one end of the country to the next with nothing but friends, a suitcase and a car full of gas is an adventure worth every mile. Witnessing the various aspects of America through up close encounters shows the country’s diversity in different climates, landscapes and populations. Traveling like this will both create and test friendships as well as introduce America in a whole new light. 4. Film a Horror Movie with Friends: Every

May 13, 2011

October there is horror in the air as Halloween creeps around the corner. Children, teenagers and adults often find themselves watching some of the greatest horror films ever made including Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Nightmare on Elm Street, F r i d a y the 13th and Halloween. As a way to connect with friends and add humor to the scary holiday, film a horror movie with one’s own friends. Call the shots and choose who dies where and how, who lives and who the killer is. Make it as gory as possible and add cheesy comedy into it. Then when the filming is complete, show off the masterpiece to family, friends and whoever else wants to watch. There is no better way to make yourself famous than to put yourself on camera and show off hidden talents, even if they are one’s ability to scream.
