Dear friends: “Hard work is the price we must pay for success.” So said legendary National Football League Coach Vince Lombardi. I believe this quote is as relevant to health care as it is to the field of sports — and that, at Huntington Hospital, future success depends very much on the work we do today. To achieve future success in providing excellent, compassionate healthcare services, we must — among other things — partner with top medical experts; invest in proven medical technologies; ensure the availability of state-of-the-art facilities; conduct research that helps to advance care; and teach future care providers. With your support, we continue to do all of these. Every community member who contributes to the hospital, by raising funds on our behalf or volunteering his or her time, is helping to ensure that our success is evergreen. In this issue of Advocate, you will read about just a few of the individuals and organizations making a difference — and about the impact their gifts make on the patients we serve. Sincere thanks to each of you — our valued partners — in bringing the very best of health care to our region.

Dear friends: When you give to Huntington Hospital, you are making a difference for the patients who rely on us for exceptional medical care. They are people we know: our family, our friends and our neighbors. Your gifts help them by: •  Making the hospital a place that attracts and retains the best doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals. •  Sustaining a high level of clinical care, with a human touch. •  Underwriting advanced clinical education that allows us to remain at the leading edge of medicine. •  Supporting state-of-the-art care technologies and facilities. Whether you choose to make an outright or planned gift, and whether you designate your support toward a specific department or provide unrestricted funding toward our general operations, thank you. We are pleased to share with you this report on philanthropy, covering the 2018 calendar year, which shows some of the ways your gifts make a difference.

UniHealth Foundation Partners in creating a trauma‑informed community.

Emotional trauma is increasingly recognized as a healthcare epidemic. Experts now estimate that two out of every 10 Americans have suffered levels of trauma that place them at higher risk for a surprisingly large array of health problems, ranging from severe obesity to heart disease to respiratory disease, suicide and more. “The statistics are quite staggering,” says Jennifer Vanore, PhD, president and chief operating officer of UniHealth Foundation. To help address trauma and its impacts in our community, the foundation recently provided a multi-year grant in support of a new Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative. This collaborative program is led by Huntington Hospital, Young & Healthy and Pasadena Unified School District. Reducing the impact of trauma.

UniHealth Foundation has provided important funding toward a collaborative program to enhance the well-being of our community. Above, Jennifer Vanore, PhD, president and chief operating officer, and Bradley C. Call, chairman and chief executive officer of the foundation.

A trauma-informed approach involves understanding how traumatic experiences and traumatic stress may impact people we interact with, and responding in ways that are appropriate and supportive. By increasing our community’s capacity to provide trauma-informed care, the Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative seeks to reduce the prevalence and impacts of trauma here. Through the multifaceted program, Pasadena Unified School District staff members receive innovative training and in-classroom support to help them create traumainformed classrooms. Community physicians and the hospital’s medical residents obtain information about emotional trauma’s impacts on physical health, and how to strengthen care for patients who have experienced trauma. Other local caring professionals and families participate in education that expands their knowledge of trauma and how to prevent its ill effects. Staff, hospital-wide, are being trained in the trauma-informed approach. “There are only a handful of communities in Southern California that have taken similar steps to become trauma informed,” says Jennifer. “As a Pasadena resident myself, it’s particularly exciting to me that Huntington Hospital and its partners are committed to this approach.”

Bereavement, abuse and other traumatic experiences in childhood can lead to poorer health outcomes later in life. Part of the hospital’s whole-health approach, the new Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative is educating caregivers, educators, parents and others about the negative impacts of trauma and how to prevent them.

In support of regional health.

An ounce of prevention.

For nearly 20 years, UniHealth Foundation has been supporting nonprofit, community-based hospitals, as well as health-related organizations working in close collaboration with a charitable hospital. The foundation focuses its support primarily on services that benefit the residents of Los Angeles and Orange County. “Our mission is to support and facilitate activities that significantly improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities within our service area,” says Jennifer. “We have a long history of partnership with Huntington Hospital,” she continues. “It was a recipient of one of our very first grants in 2000.” Prior funding from the foundation has helped us implement several other advanced healthcare models, including our inpatient palliative care program and outpatient medical home. “The projects we’ve funded to date have demonstrated the hospital’s real commitment to strengthening care for Pasadena and this new initiative builds on its existing, strong community partnerships,” Jennifer says.

“There have been significant and dramatic shifts in health care over recent years,” she adds. “Hospitals and physicians are increasingly focused not merely on curing people, but on preventing them from getting sick in the first place. For the foundation’s board, one key selling point about the new trauma-informed care initiative is that it’s working upstream to help prevent mental health and physical health problems.” In addition, she notes, “If challenges have already occurred in an individual’s life, the initiative is helping address them in a more positive way. To be a traumainformed community is really to be on the leading edge of addressing mental health challenges in our region.”

UniHealth Foundation has provided important three-year seed funding toward a new project to reduce the impact of emotional trauma among Pasadena residents (see story on page 6). The program — known as the Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative — is a collaborative venture, involving Huntington Hospital, Pasadena Unified School District and Young & Healthy. (Young & Healthy is certified as a trauma-informed agency and is providing significant leadership to training activities of the program.)

UniHealth Foundation is once again making a meaningful difference in the health of our region and we’re extremely grateful to them for their continued partnership with us.

O

ne key component of the new program is training for local school staff. Many school district teachers have already learned more about working with children in ways that help prevent or address trauma. Teachers are also introducing new mindfulness activities into their classrooms, helping students to handle feelings of anxiety and distress more successfully. The program was launched in May 2018. While research data for the first year of operations was not available at press time, teachers are already reporting results. On a recent field trip, for example, one teacher noticed that a student with special needs was becoming upset by the noise at their destination. Thanks to the mindfulness practices the teacher had introduced in class, the student received immediate comfort. “Another student put his arm around her and said, ‘It’s OK. You just need to take some calm breaths to help you be brave,’” the teacher reports. “She stayed next to him, took some breaths and was fine.” “Every day, I use the language of calm bodies, calm brains and calm hearts,” from the training, says another teacher. “It has helped students to ground themselves.” In the future, we will be carefully evaluating the impact of the Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative, based on specific indicators of community well-being. “We’re confident that this program will reduce the lifelong impact of prior trauma — and prevent retraumatization — for members of our community,” says Lori J. Morgan, MD, MBA, our president and chief executive officer. “By supporting this work, UniHealth Foundation is once again making a meaningful difference in the health of our region and we’re extremely grateful to them for their continued partnership with us.”

Training through the Pasadena Trauma-Informed Care Initiative is helping local teachers support student well-being, using in-class mindfulness activities.

Terri and Jerry Kohl Lifesaving support.

“You hope you’re never going to need it,” says Jerry Kohl, on the subject of hospital care. He and his wife, Terri, though, have made generous contributions to Huntington Hospital over the years — including an investment in advanced robotic surgery technology. “As fate would have it, when I did need surgery recently,” Jerry continues, “the machine used to operate on me was the one we’d helped to buy. “That really brought home to Terri and me the importance of getting involved,” he adds. “Huntington Hospital has the best doctors, the best equipment and the best care, and we want to help make sure it stays here for the community.” Other significant gifts from the Kohls have made a difference to the work of our cardiac catheterization laboratory and our Emergency & Trauma Center. Most recently, they made a leadership pledge toward the creation of our new cardiac center.

Improving heart health.

“The Kohls’ generous contribution will help to save a lot of lives,” says Robbin Cohen, MD, medical director of cardiothoracic surgery. “The new center they are helping us to build will bring our cardiac services together under one roof, improving coordination and comfort. It will be right above our Nan and Howard Schow Emergency & Trauma Center, so when patients come in with cardiac emergencies, we’ll be able to get them to treatment more quickly,” he adds. Terri and Jerry are particularly aware of the importance of high-quality heart care, given that three family members, including Jerry himself, have received heart-related services here. Jerry is also a participant in our cardiac rehabilitation program, which provides physician-supervised exercise and other important services that support heart health. Doing our share.

Terri and Jerry met in elementary school in Monterey Park and started dating in high school. Since then, they have remained partners both in life and in business. While their school friends were spending dates at the movies, Terri and Jerry were starting a boutique that catered to fellow classmates. Today their company, Brighton Collectibles, has grown to operate 180 stores. The company’s products are also sold in more than 4,000 additional fine specialty boutiques and online stores — including our own S. Robert and Denise Zeilstra Gift Shop.

With their success, the Kohls say, they feel a sense of responsibility to give back. “We live in this community and we want good care,” says Jerry, “so we think it’s important to do our share to help support that.” In addition to their involvement at Huntington Hospital, the Kohls’ philanthropy also reflects their passion for music and music education. “Many schools can no longer fund art or music programs,” Jerry notes, “and we feel it’s very important for this type of program to continue.” Some years ago, the Kohls were fortunate enough to acquire a Stradivarius violin, which they also use for philanthropic purposes. They loan the rare instrument, prized for its exquisite sound, to the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s concertmaster. “It’s like seeing your child in a school play,” says Jerry, of the couple’s excitement at performances using the violin. Inspirational philanthropy.

The Kohls are joined by additional members of their family in making a difference at the hospital: Jerry’s sister, Gale Kohl, is the owner of Gale’s Restaurant in Pasadena. Her longtime partnership with us has included hosting recognition events for our SCRUBS Giving Society donors, at her restaurant. They now hope their support will help inspire others to get involved. “We’re following in the footsteps of a lot of earlier donors,” says Jerry, “and we hope other people will follow in our footsteps as well.”

The new cardiac center — including advanced cardiac catheterization suites like the one shown in this rendering — will expand our care capabilities. Generous support from the Kohls is helping to create these state-of-the-art facilities.

From screening and diagnostic tests, to advanced surgical treatments, to physician-supervised rehabilitation, Huntington Hospital is here to help heart patients throughout their journey toward better health. Generous philanthropic support makes this possible — helping to save and improve the lives of thousands of cardiac patients each year. Becky Ebershoff is one of them.

B

ecky made being healthy a priority. Leading an active lifestyle, her blood pressure and cholesterol levels were normal. She even had a stress test to confirm her heart was working properly, but suffered a heart attack just two months later. “It never occurred to me that something like this could happen to me,” she says of the attack, which came on suddenly while she was out of town visiting with family and friends. Soft plaque in one of her arteries had broken loose, creating a blockage large enough to cause the attack. She did not know what was happening, so she called her doctor at Huntington Hospital, Christine Won, MD. Dr. Won instructed Becky to go to the nearest hospital immediately, where doctors inserted a stent into the artery. This, and the blood-thinning medication she was then prescribed, were life saving — but only a temporary solution. Three additional arteries were also found to be blocked. She would need triple bypass surgery. Becky and her husband, David, researched surgeons who perform this procedure before selecting Robbin Cohen, MD, at Huntington Hospital. “You have to have a good doctor and a good plan,” she says. “The more we learned about Dr. Cohen and the hospital, the more convinced we were that this was the right choice.” Dr. Cohen and his team performed Becky’s open-heart surgery. Advanced anesthesia medication, called a nerve block, was also administered via injection, so Becky experienced “no pain whatsoever,” following the procedure, she notes. “The experience could not have been better,” Becky says, “and Dr. Cohen and the rest of the staff took the time to explain everything. We’re grateful they were so professional and so understanding.” Following surgery, Becky utilized some of the many support services available at the hospital for cardiac patients. This included participating in our cardiac rehabilitation program, which offers physician-supervised exercise, nutrition information and other assistance. “Everything is all in one place,” she says. “They have the whole package: everything to support you physically and mentally. After all this, I wouldn’t even think about going anywhere but Huntington Hospital.” Now she is back to work and on the road to recovery. As a way of expressing their gratitude, Becky and David have made a generous contribution to the hospital, through our Grateful Hearts program, in honor of Dr. Cohen.

Around the campus.

New enhancements to serve you better. As you visit our campus in the coming months, you may see construction work underway. We are excited to announce that Huntington Hospital is undergoing important facilities improvements to expand our care capacity and strengthen care delivery. We feel a particularly strong responsibility in this regard, given our role as the leading medical institution in our service region. We are, for example, a distinguished provider of cardiac care, certified as a comprehensive stroke center and home to the largest trauma center in the San Gabriel Valley. To meet the continued care needs of our region’s expanding population in these and other clinical areas, we must take important steps now. Among these, we will be creating a new cardiac center and expanding our surgical facilities, directly above our Nan and Howard Schow Emergency & Trauma Center. Numerous services will be brought together in one state-of-the-art area, and rapid transfer from the Emergency & Trauma Center will further speed delivery of care. We will also be upgrading various aspects of our overall campus infrastructure: Seismic retrofitting of older buildings will ensure we meet the new standards for hospitals that will take effect in January 2020. Additional enhancements will strengthen efficiency, sustainability and safety still further. In the face of rapid changes in the field of medicine, we remain committed to bringing you the very highest-quality care — and enhancing our facilities is essential to success. Community philanthropy will play an important role, helping to underwrite the costs of vital upgrades we must make across our campus over the next few years. We look forward to providing additional updates as work proceeds. In the interim, please visit www.huntingtonhospital.org /construction for questions regarding parking or building accessibility.

Our new hybrid catheterization laboratory (rendering, above) will allow us to deliver an even higher level of care to cardiac patients.

Arlene and Allan Miller

Appreciating, and supporting, great care.

W

hen Arlene and Allan Miller sold a second home in San Diego, they already knew how they wanted to use the proceeds: A significant portion would be contributed to Huntington Hospital. Adding to other gifts over more than a decade, the couple has now created a charitable gift annuity to help support our work. “It’s pretty straightforward,” says Allan of creating the gift annuity, “and, in addition to helping the hospital, it also produces income for the donor, which is an additional advantage. With their latest contribution, the Millers join our Benefactor Program, which recognizes some of our most generous Chairman’s Council supporters. “We’ve been fortunate in life,” says Allan, “and we feel it’s important to support such a great medical center in our area. The level of excellence is so high, and the people we’ve dealt with are of such a high caliber, that it really makes us feel good to contribute.” Advancing stroke care.

The Millers have designated the majority of their support over recent years toward our stroke program. They cite the exceptional care Arlene has received from Arbi Ohanian, MD, medical director of Huntington Hospital Stroke Center, as the inspiration for this philanthropic focus: Arlene suffers from an ocular migraine condition that causes occasional vision and speech impairments. After years of seeking an accurate diagnosis from multiple neurologists, “Finally, Dr. Ohanian was the answer,” she says.

Gifts from friends like the Millers make a real difference. They help to ensure our continued ability to introduce the latest advancements in care — and thus support ever-stronger outcomes. In 2017, we earned advanced certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, a particularly significant achievement that recognizes highest-quality, time-sensitive care for stroke patients. We are the only hospital in the San Gabriel Valley to achieve this prestigious designation, which is granted by The Joint Commission (the foremost accrediting body in health care in the United States). Recently, we also received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes stroke treatment that meets or exceeds nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. In addition, we have been named to the Target: StrokeSM Elite Honor Roll, recognizing excellence in providing prompt clot-busting treatment, which helps reduce mortality and improve outcomes. Excellent and timely.

Past support from the Millers allowed us to acquire advanced telemedicine (telestroke) technology. This state-of-the-art equipment supports timely patient assessment and enhanced communication among patient, family, neurologist and other members of the care team. It allows a specialist to conduct remote, real-time patient assessment, thereby reducing time to treatment, when every second counts.

26  Elevate

The level of excellence is so high, and the people we’ve dealt with are of such a high caliber, that it really makes us feel good to contribute.

The Millers also speak highly of our Nan and Howard Schow Emergency & Trauma Center. When Arlene experienced a severe migraine episode and needed emergency care, Allan notes, “I was just so impressed when I saw how quickly they whisked her in. They have an amazing team. I thought to myself, this is really first-class care.” They were again impressed when Allan turned to the hospital for emergency care. “I was very quickly taken in, and I received very good care,” he says. “We understand that eighty-five percent of admissions to the hospital come through the emergency and trauma center,” says Arlene. “It’s very comforting to know that this facility is so close by and that people in our community have this great place to turn to.” Carrying it forward.

Other members of the Miller family have inherited Arlene and Allen’s commitment to improving the lives of others: Son, Bill, is a second-grade teacher at an inner-city school. His wife, Chris, is also a teacher. The Millers’ daughter, Elizabeth Miller-Bougdanos, and her husband, Gene, are now encouraging volunteerism among the Millers’ grandchildren, Sammy, Sarah and Stevie. Whether making toys for disadvantaged children, scouting, giving to our troops or tutoring other kids, all three grandchildren are making a difference. Arlene is particularly pleased that granddaughter Sarah recently began exploring volunteer opportunities at Huntington Hospital — continuing the family’s legacy of support for our work.

Donors to Huntington Hospital’s comprehensive stroke program help us deliver fast, expert care, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These philanthropists are important partners in care: Their contributions help save brain function and ensure the best possible outcomes for patients here. We deeply appreciate their thoughtful contributions to world-class stroke care.

J

on Garkow was just wrapping up a meeting at work when it began. His hand started clenching involuntarily. He fell to the ground, his entire right side completely numb. “It was scary and strange,” he says. “I knew something was very wrong.” Colleagues quickly called 911, and an ambulance rushed Jon to Huntington Hospital. He was having a stroke. Jon’s daughter Ashley was at work when she got the call. “I just kept thinking, ‘Please let him be OK. Please don’t take away the only parent I have left,’” she says. She started for the hospital and, on her way, got another call. Our staff spoke with her and — as Jon could not speak for himself — received her approval to perform a mechanical thrombectomy. As a result, by the time she arrived, doctors were already conducting the procedure — placing a stent to open Jon’s affected artery and removing the blockage that had caused his stroke. Afterwards, Ashley visited with her dad and talked to the specialist who had performed the lifesaving procedure. She also met Jon’s stroke case worker, who told her what to expect during Jon’s recovery. “The doctor explained everything in a way that I could understand,” Ashley says, “and his case worker was so happy my dad was OK that she was teary-eyed. That the hospital staff cares so much is amazing to me,” she adds. “We’re grateful for their compassion and their empathy.” Jon spent four days in the hospital, participating in physical, occupational and speech therapy to help him recover. As part of his care, doctors also inserted a small device, known as an inferior vena cava filter, into a vein below his heart, to reduce the risk of any newly formed clots moving into his lungs. Today, he is fully recovered. “Dad’s neurologist calls him a ‘medical miracle,’” Ashley says, “because his recovery was so fast. It’s because the team at Huntington Hospital was so efficient. They were able to get blood flowing to his brain sooner, and it made all the difference in the world. The hospital has truly been a lifesaver.”

Mei-Lee Ney

Investing in the future of care.

M

ei-Lee Ney’s philanthropy is driven by a commitment to strengthen her community, now and for the future. This commitment sparked her giving to Huntington Hospital in 2011. In 2017, it led her to join our Legacy Gift Society, pledging support to the hospital via a living trust as part of her estate plan. While most estate gifts do not take effect until after a donor’s lifetime, Mei-Lee has already begun making payments toward her pledge, for immediate impact. In addition, by providing her contributions without restrictions, she allows us to use her funding flexibly to cover the most pressing needs. Mei-Lee is using a tax-wise vehicle to make contributions toward her estate pledge: When she reached the age at which required minimum distributions from her individual retirement account kicked in, she says, “I sat down with my estate lawyer and my tax attorney to map out how best to balance my tax liability and my charitable donations going forward.

Community support helps the hospital attract the best doctors, conduct the best research and provide the best service to our region.

Advocate. Spring 2019.   31

“Setting this up was easy,” adds Mei-Lee, who knows all about smart financial decisions. She has worked at the investment advisory firm Richard Ney & Associates Asset Management Inc. — founded with her late husband, Richard — since 1973 and currently serves as its president. Additionally, for more than 20 years, she and Richard co-wrote and edited “The Ney Report,” an investment newsletter, and she served as editor for two of Richard’s books about the stock market. What Mei-Lee loves most about her work is the impact she makes on the lives of her clients. “I’m now past the traditional retirement age,” she says, “but I keep working because I’m concerned for the well-being of my clients. Work is one of the ways in which I give back to others, which I enjoy.” An inspiration.

Grateful recognition. In recognition of Mei-Lee’s generous investment in our work, we have named one of our waiting rooms in her honor. Located on the sixth floor of our East Tower, the room offers a comfortable and restful space for patients and their families.

(Joe and his wife, Alice, have donated generously toward our work for many years and Joe volunteers at our S. When someone like Joe volunteers his time, when he certainly could be spending that time in many other ways,” she adds, “it’s a testament to the kind of institution Huntington Hospital is. “Huntington Hospital has a reputation for quality care, and a holistic approach to serving the community,” she adds. “It means a lot to me to be able to benefit others through my involvement with its work.” Community minded.

Mei-Lee also supports and strengthens our community in many other ways — serving, for example, on the board of councilors of both USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and USC Pacific Asia Museum. Additionally, she serves on the board of directors at The Valley Hunt Club, board of trustees of Otis College of Art and Design and board of overseers of The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. She has generously supported organizations such as LA Opera, Pasadena Senior Center and Pasadena Educational Foundation. “My main goal,” she says of her volunteer and philanthropic work, “is to support organizations that enhance the lives of others.” It is why she chooses to contribute to Huntington Hospital. “Community support helps the hospital attract the best doctors, conduct the best research and provide the best service to our region,” she says. “To me, that’s a very strong incentive to give — and to give sooner rather than later.”

Mei-Lee Ney’s thoughtful philanthropy strengthens community health, by supporting compassionate, patientcentered care, delivered by highly skilled clinicians.

Margaret and Keith Russell

In support of community care.

F

or Margaret and Keith Russell, the connection to Huntington Hospital is personal. Keith’s late father, an OB-GYN, trained many OB-GYNs who have previously practiced or currently practice here. “Growing up as the son of a doctor taught me the importance of having good health care in the community,” Keith says. Additionally, both he and Margaret have been patients here and, he adds, “We have lots of friends who have used Huntington Hospital. They uniformly rave about their experiences and the quality of care they receive.” For these reasons, the Russells are enthusiastic supporters of our work. They recently demonstrated their appreciation for great care here through significant unrestricted support. Specifically, they have pledged long-term funding through the Countrywide Directors Charitable Giving program. Keith served for eight years on the corporate board at Countrywide, which provided its directors with the opportunity to allocate meaningful support to a charity or charities of their choice. When Bank of America acquired Countrywide, they generously continued the program, Keith notes. “I hope our gift helps to fulfill Huntington Hospital’s mission,” he says, “and to sustain its ability to serve our community.”

Around the world and back again.

Keith is a Los Angeles native, but left the area to study economics at the University of Washington in Seattle. While at school, he met Margaret, who was born and raised in that city. The pair married during their senior year, and each later graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Keith went on to earn a master’s degree in economics at Northwestern University. (It was in Illinois that the couple welcomed their daughter, Hope, to the world.) His career in banking and finance included executive leadership roles at Security Pacific National Bank, GLENFED/Glendale Federal Bank, and Mellon Bank Corporation. While his work took the family to London and Hong Kong over the years, the Russells ultimately returned to the United States and settled in Pasadena.

Support from the Russells is helping us to invest in advanced training for our nurses. Above, nurses gain valuable, hands-on experience, as they practice procedures using a lifelike training mannequin.

We give to Huntington Hospital because we feel very strongly that everyone in the community should have excellent health care, and we hope our gift will encourage others to support the hospital’s critically important work.

Margaret’s career focused on education: She taught at St. Mary Catholic School in Boyle Heights and served as a teacher and then as vice principal at Cathedral Chapel School. Later, she earned a Marriage, Family and Child Counseling (MFCC) license and returned to work as a school counselor. A new chapter.

Now retired, both Keith and Margaret have taken on new roles that keep them busy. Margaret is a full-time artist. With both an interest and a gift, she had previously used art therapy in her work with children. In fact, throughout her life, “Art sort of followed me around,” she says. Keith has served on several corporate boards since retiring from full-time involvement in the banking industry. In addition to his role on the Countrywide board, he has also lent his expertise as a director to Hawaiian Electric Industries, Sunstone Hotel Investors, Nationwide Health Properties, Inc., and others. With regard to their philanthropic engagement, the Russells focus their support on education, through the Pasadena Educational Foundation, as well as on health care, because, Keith notes, they see both of these as essential factors in creating strong communities. “We give to Huntington Hospital,” he adds, “because we feel very strongly that everyone in the community should have excellent health care, and we hope our gift will encourage others to support the hospital’s critically important work.”

Create your legacy.

H

untington Hospital held a special luncheon on December 13, 2018, to recognize members of our Legacy Gift Society. These generous individuals have made philanthropic commitments to the hospital through their estate plans, helping to safeguard top-quality health care for our region into the future. During the event, which took place at The Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena, guests had the opportunity to mix and mingle. They were joined by Lori J. Morgan, MD, MBA, president and chief executive officer; Jane Haderlein, senior vice president of philanthropy and public relations; and members of the office of philanthropy staff. Jane took the opportunity to thank Legacy Gift Society members for their support — and to share information about the impact of such generous community contributions.

Huntington Hospital provides many meaningful opportunities for donor education and engagement. To find out more about upcoming events, or the ways in which a planned gift to the hospital can make a lifesaving difference, please contact Cathi Chadwell, executive director of public affairs, at (626) 397-3241 or at cathi.chadwell@ huntingtonhospital. com. We also encourage you to visit www. huntingtonhospital. org/giftplanning to learn more.

Investments in care.

Dr. Morgan spoke on behalf of everyone at the hospital when she acknowledged the importance of planned gifts made by Legacy Gift Society members. She went on to describe key projects that are already underway or soon to be implemented, thanks to community support. Examples include enhancements to our cardiac and surgery facilities, other upgrades to our care campus, advanced education for members of our care team, and more. “While prevention and science are key components of exceptional care,” Dr. Morgan added, “we see excellent medicine almost as an art, found at the intersection of innovation and compassion, service and efficiency.” Philanthropy helps us to achieve such excellence and, in closing, Dr. Morgan again emphasized the important role Legacy Gift Society members play. “Thoughtful supporters like you,” she shared, “are the reason we’re excited to come to work every day. Thanks to you, we’re able to give members of our community the best of care.”

E

ach year, gifts to Huntington Annual Fund from our diverse community of supporters — including patients, local residents, employees, physicians and friends — help to strengthen the hospital and foster our many accomplishments. More than 3,000 donors provide approximately $3 million in flexible operating support through the fund on an annual basis. Their support helps bridge the gap between available revenue streams and the actual costs of providing care, and we are deeply grateful. By making a gift to Huntington Annual Fund, you help us:

•  Attract and retain highly skilled clinical staff. •  Offer the latest advancements in care. •  Provide opportunities for advanced nursing education that results in even better care at the bedside. •  Upgrade technology and maintain premier facilities to further enhance patient outcomes. •  Support advanced clinical research that leads to new medical discoveries. Huntington Annual Fund gifts also help us to meet unforeseen needs as they arise, without affecting our long-term financial stability or ability to achieve existing goals. Looking to the future, gifts to our annual fund will be more essential than ever.

ENABLING INNOVATION THROUGH ANNUAL SUPPORT

Huntington Annual Fund and President’s Circle Ways to give.

There are many ways to make an immediate — and often lifelong — impact on our patients and to support their caregivers. You may provide unrestricted support, which gives us maximum flexibility to use funds where they are needed most. This includes, for example, attracting the best and brightest clinical staff, providing ongoing caregiver education, maintaining and upgrading stateof-the-art facilities and more.

Alternatively, you may designate your gift to a specific area of our work that has special meaning for you. Funds will be used to support the greatest needs in the area/s of your choice. Donors to Huntington Annual Fund receive exclusive benefits (opposite), including — for those providing gifts of $2,000 and above — membership in the President’s Circle of Huntington Hospital. President’s Circle donors provide approximately 80 percent of annual fund contributions and we particularly appreciate their generous support.

We encourage you to join President’s Circle members and other annual fund donors today, to ensure the continued availability of high-quality care close to home.

Building the future of care.

Harry Fisk Bowles, MD, newly appointed chief of medical staff at Huntington Hospital, delivered the event’s keynote address. He underscored the excellence of our care and our commitment to ongoing evolution, noting that the hospital’s forward-thinking approach makes us an example for other institutions to emulate and follow. Dr. Bowles went on to discuss plans for our new cardiac center and expanded surgical facilities, emphasizing the importance of such thoughtful innovation to remain at the leading edge of care. He also shared a video clip, which featured messages from other Huntington Hospital physicians about what makes the hospital special. In conclusion, Dr. Bowles gave special thanks to the outstanding staff members who deliver world-class care to our patients every day — and to the President’s Circle donors who help make all our work possible. Dr. Bowles is board certified in anesthesiology and addiction medicine and has been a member of our medical staff since 1990. He holds a Master of Science degree in nutrition from University of California, Davis, received his medical degree from the University of Southern California (USC) and completed training in anesthesiology at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center. Many thanks to our loyal President’s Circle donors for their generous, ongoing annual support. Their contributions through our annual fund help us provide high-quality medical care to patients throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

S

onia and Neil Singla, MD, want to make people feel better. It is why they both became physicians at Huntington Hospital — and why they have provided significant philanthropic support to the hospital over the years. The Singlas make contributions without restrictions, allowing us to deploy their gifts to support the best of care, wherever the need is greatest. Unrestricted gifts like theirs are also essential to the continuation of above-and-beyond medicine here — supporting investments in the latest innovations and state-of-the-art technologies.

Family ties.

Eighteen years ago, further expanding their impact on patient well-being, Dr. Neil Singla founded Lotus Clinical Research, LLC. This research organization develops and tests innovative approaches to pain relief. Dr. Neil Singla serves as Lotus’ chief executive officer and Dr. Sonia Singla as its chief administrative officer. Both also continue to provide direct patient care as physicians on our medical staff. The Singlas are both from Ohio. They met as students at Kent State University, moving to California in 1997 and settling in Pasadena in 2000. In 2004, the Singlas welcomed twins Mia and Asher. The babies, born prematurely, received care in our neonatal intensive care unit until they were stable enough to go home with their parents. Six years later, the Singlas welcomed a third child, son Roen, who was also born at Huntington Hospital. Even at a young age, the Singla children are following in their parents’ footsteps with regard to their interest in health care and in philanthropy. Roen, for example, recently wrote an essay for school about the need to develop more effective pain medication (“I guess he has been listening to us!” says Dr. Sonia Singla) and Mia and Asher volunteer at Young & Healthy, a nonprofit that connects underserved families to needed health services. Dr. Sonia Singla has herself been involved with Young & Healthy for 15 years, and currently serves as volunteer medical director for that organization, in addition to her other work. New approaches to pain.

Dr. Neil Singla was still in his final year of residency when he developed plans for a clinical research center that would conduct studies to improve the management of pain. When he presented his idea to leaders at the hospital, they agreed to provide important administrative and infrastructural support to get this important work off the ground. “The hospital shows a real commitment to leading-edge care,” he says, “and this is a great example.”

Advocate. Spring 2019.   47

Research conducted by Lotus Clinical Research, LLC, headed by the Singlas, has led to important innovations in non-opioid pain management.

We give back to the hospital because it’s trusted as this region’s premier healthcare institution.

48  Innovate

Studies conducted at Lotus have helped expand and improve painmanagement options for patients not only in our own region but nationally and internationally. For example, the organization’s work has led to Federal Drug Administration approval for intravenous delivery of ibuprofen and acetaminophen (the active ingredients in the over-the-counter pain medications Motrin® and Tylenol®). Both are now mainstays of care for surgical patients, and the new method of administration impacts patient well-being while helping to reduce the need for opioid medications. Supporting community health.

Collaborating with Lotus is helping to ensure that patients at Huntington Hospital have access to the latest and best technologies and protocols for pain relief. As members of our medical staff, the Singlas in turn have a special appreciation for the level of care here. “We’ve seen the excellent care this hospital delivers,” Dr. Neil Singla says. “In part, that’s because of the people who come to work here. They believe in the hospital’s mission so much.” “This hospital is the epicenter of our community,” says Dr. Sonia Singla. “People trust the leadership here, and they know they can rely on the doctors here to be the best. We give back to the hospital because it’s trusted as this region’s premier healthcare institution, and because we want to take care of local patients.”

SCRUBS PROJECT 2019

Supporting essential mental health training. This year, SCRUBS donors’ goal is to raise at least $50,000 toward specialized training for our staff. Participants in the training learn how to identify the causes, signs and symptoms of depression and suicidal behavior among children. As a result, they are better able to partner with parents to support each child’s whole health. Trained staff also quickly collaborate with parents and other members of our team to secure additional child-friendly help, when needed. Training has already been rolled out in our pediatric unit, and we will soon expand it to reach nursing staff in our Nan and Howard Schow Emergency & Trauma Center. Huntington Hospital is one of the first hospitals in Southern California to implement this kind of training for pediatric staff. It can truly be a lifesaver: Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for children age 10 through 14 and knowing the warning signs for self-harm is essential to keep young people safe and get them the help they need.

Charity begins at home.

S

ince 2014, Sarah and Matthew Krappman have been members of Huntington Hospital’s SCRUBS Giving Society. Some of their contributions have been made in tribute to family members who have received care here. “There’s a saying,” says Matthew, “that charity begins at home. Our kids were born at Huntington Hospital and so, really, we feel our home started there.” In fact, the family’s roots at the hospital go back still further. Sarah, too, was born here. She also volunteered at the hospital during her high school years and remembers that experience fondly. “It’s our community hospital, and it’s part of our personal lives,” she says. “Eighteen of our 29 nieces and nephews were born at the hospital, as well as two of my five siblings. It’s been involved in some of our family’s major milestones. We’ve been personally affected by and impressed with the level of care there, and it has a special place in our hearts,” she adds.

A match made in heaven.

The Krappmans met more than 15 years ago. Sarah’s father and Matthew’s father, both attorneys, knew each other from their time together at Stanford University. After not seeing each other for a while, they met for lunch in 2003. Chatting about their families, they decided they should arrange for Matthew and Sarah to meet. Sadly, Matthew’s father died only a week later, but the lunchtime decision was not forgotten. Sarah’s father followed up and Sarah and Matthew hit it off, just as their fathers imagined they would. The two were married by the following year. “Helping us get together was the last and very best thing my dad ever did for me,” Matthew says.

The Krappmans are involved in the community through their careers: Matthew is the owner of San Gabriel Valley Development LLC, which provides consultation services to the construction industry. Sarah works in residential real estate. “I love interacting with people in this area,” she says. “Given my roots here, I understand the neighborhoods, the schools, the community and the lifestyle.” Sarah and Matthew also contribute to their community through their volunteer work at the school attended by their three sons, Charlie, Kevin and Patrick. In addition, they both serve as board members with local nonprofit organizations and donate to the causes they care about. In particular, they say, they are enjoying their membership in SCRUBS. “First of all,” says Matthew, “supporting Huntington Hospital is extremely worthwhile. You never know when you might need its services. “It’s also just a fun group to be a part of,” he adds, “with really wonderful people and exciting events.” In addition, the Krappmans enjoy the opportunity that SCRUBS provides for them to connect with hospital staff. “When you talk to the doctors and staff and get to know them on a more personal level,” says Sarah, “you learn more about them and about the hospital — and about how hard they work to give us such fantastic health care. “We are not wealthy people, but we were both raised to give back and to care about the community,” she adds, “so when the opportunity to support Huntington Hospital arose, we responded with an enthusiastic, ‘Yes!’”

SCRUBS Giving Society New year, new faces. SCRUBS Giving Society offers the best of both worlds — the chance to make a difference for our community and the chance to network and have fun. Here is what some of our newest SCRUBS donors say about why they joined this dynamic group.

“I like being able to support the hospital in an environment that allows me to socialize and network. Huntington Hospital is a vital community resource, but it can’t provide the level of care we have come to expect without our help. I feel my contribution is not just to the hospital, but to the community as a whole.” Jane Feinberg

“We were excited for the opportunity to support Huntington Hospital and attend fun social events, which are always unique and beautifully executed. Joining SCRUBS is a great way to support our local hospital, while learning about the exciting innovations taking place there — and meeting others who also support this wonderful institution.” Jennifer and Thomas Gowen

“We have supported Huntington Hospital ever since two of our children received care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) there. Through our membership in SCRUBS, we get to support the excellent pediatric care at the hospital. We will continue to support Huntington Hospital because it’s our community hospital, and we know we can count on it for great care.”

“I had been to several SCRUBS events as the chair of pediatrics, and I’ve always enjoyed them. As a local parent, I know how important it is to have a top-notch hospital like Huntington Hospital in our own backyard, and as a doctor there, I know how much these philanthropic donations mean. Joining SCRUBS was a no-brainer for me!” John Rodarte, MD

JAVIER GUERRA

Working hard and giving back.

J

avier Guerra, RN, has been a member of Huntington Hospital’s professional nursing team for more than 10 years. As a result, he holds special insight into the importance of community support here. “I see the people who need the care that Huntington Hospital provides,” he says. Since 2015, Javier has also been a member of our SCRUBS Giving Society. As a father, he was particularly drawn to SCRUBS: The group plays an important role in raising funds in support of our pediatric programs and services. His son, he notes, has received care in our emergency department, giving an added level of urgency to his decision to contribute. “I really want to make sure patients here are taken care of,” he says. “I want these doors to stay open.” His SCRUBS membership, Javier adds, also gives him access to fun and engaging events. Nursing excellence.

Before turning to a career in nursing, Javier held a variety of jobs — but nothing felt quite right, he says. Then, “I dropped out of work,” he laughs, “and went back to school full time.” Graduating from Azusa Pacific University with a Baccalaureate of Science in nursing in 2008, he began a new chapter of his professional life, as a registered nurse. Javier initially joined our staff as a nurse in our definitive observation unit, or DOU. This area of the hospital serves patients who no longer require a stay in our critical care unit, but who still need a high level of care and who are experiencing severe medical conditions that require especially close monitoring and multiple interventions. After six years in the DOU, Javier was invited to work on an important information technology project, known as Huntington Access Network Knowledge (HANK). This multi-year effort involved developing a new electronic

56  Innovate

medical record system and preparing caregivers to use it successfully. His experience on the front line of nursing care allowed Javier to provide valuable input for the system’s design. The system, which went live in 2014, provides our caregivers with confidential, real-time access to patients’ clinical information. It also interfaces with barcode information on medications and patient wristbands, further strengthening convenience, coordination and safety. Caring and sharing.

Eventually, the HANK project led to the formation of a new department, known as nursing informatics, at the hospital. Within this department, Javier is now part of a team of experienced nurses who integrate nursing science, information management and computer sciences to support the best decision-making and patient outcomes. The team is known as the Safety, Workflow, Assessment and Technology (SWAT) team. His job also includes conducting nursing education and orienting new nurses, among other activities — and some of his work shifts remain dedicated to direct patient care. “Huntington Hospital is a big institution,” Javier says, “but it doesn’t feel like it, and what makes it special is the people who work here. I look forward to coming to work every day.” Javier is a natural caregiver, so neither his chosen profession nor the focus of his philanthropy comes as a surprise. “We all have the option to support a variety of different causes,” he says. “Getting to see my money in action, providing care to people who need it, is very meaningful to me.”

Gratitude through giving. Huntington Hospital team members deliver above-and-beyond care to our patients every day. Through our Grateful Hearts program, you can now make gifts honoring a special caregiver who went the extra mile to make your hospital stay the very best it could be. Rozie Groag, MSW; Suzie Kline, PhD, NP; and John Takemura, MPT, are just three of the caregivers recently honored through the program. Read what they have to say about this acknowledgment, below.

Rozie Groag, MSW Clinical Social Worker Three years of service.

Suzie Kline, PhD, NP Manager of Integrative Oncology Six years of service.

John Takemura, MPT Manager of Outpatient Rehabilitation Twenty-one years of service.

“ As a helping professional, my job is to provide every patient with the utmost respect and care. I’m honored to be recognized by such a generous gesture.”

“ Being honored is especially meaningful to me. I know donor support helps make my work with cancer patients possible and I’m really grateful.”

“ It’s always a great feeling to help a patient and make a difference in his or her experience at the hospital. It’s extremely humbling to be honored in this way.”

For more information about making a gift in gratitude, please visit https://giving.huntingtonhospital.com or call the office of philanthropy at (626) 397-3241.

Volunteer Leadership Council . Support for volunteers.

O

ur Volunteer Leadership Council is a group comprised of current and immediate past presidents of Huntington Hospital’s support groups. Members meet four times over the course of the year, to coordinate event planning and share other important information. In addition, the council provides a forum to share updates about the hospital with members. In support of outstanding student volunteers, the Volunteer Leadership Council awards scholarships to one or two graduating high school seniors who have volunteered a minimum of 40 hours at the hospital and who are planning to pursue careers in a healthcare-related field. Last year’s recipients were Gio Kim and Blake Castleman, who contributed a combined total of more than 400 hours of volunteer service at the hospital.

Members of our Volunteer Leadership Council are (back row, from left): Lori J. Morgan, MD, MBA, president and chief executive officer; Elizabeth Polenzani; Cori Solan; Lindsey Koerner, manager of annual fund and donor groups; and Brian Birnie; (middle row, from left) Jane Haderlein, senior vice president of philanthropy and public relations; Greg Thompson; Jane Feinberg; Debbie Turner; Allison Regan; Marie Darr; and (front row, from left) Stacy Miller, director of volunteer services; Geri Hamane, gift shop manager; Linda Stephens; and Lia Peterson Miller, senior director of donor engagement and communications.

Bringing philanthropy home.

The Altadena Guild’s 68th annual Home Tour, Marvelous Midwick Drive, was held on May 5, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds from the event supported Constance G. Zahorik Appearance Center and the Altadena Guild Community Service Scholarship. The guild’s scholarship program each year recognizes a Huntington Hospital employee who exemplifies community service. In addition to supporting the hospital, a portion of event proceeds benefited Huntington Medical Research Institutes. Please visit www.altadenaguild.org for more information regarding the Altadena Guild and their upcoming events.

Altadena Guild . Patricia Harris 64  Engage

P

atricia Harris has been fascinated by medicine since her teen years. After working as a medical stenographer and an electrocardiogram technician, she joined Huntington Hospital’s staff as a medical secretary in 1967. It was the beginning of a long-term connection with the hospital. Patricia’s children were born here and, when they reached toddler age, she returned to school part time and became a nurse. She then worked in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for four years. After earning a bachelor’s degree in management, Patricia worked in the health insurance industry for the remainder of her career — later earning her Master of Business Administration through an employee tuition assistance program. In 2004, she again became a regular on our campus, volunteering at our S. Robert and Denise Zeilstra Gift Shop every Thursday afternoon. Her involvement in our work reached a new level when, after attending a Huntington Hospital volunteer appreciation event in 2007, she was invited to join the Altadena Guild. “I was drawn to the group because of their history of raising funds for the hospital’s work,” she says. “I know, because of my close exposure to the hospital,” she adds, “how many challenging, innovative things it’s doing to improve the health and welfare of our community. I wanted to help preserve all the things that make it wonderful.” Enthusiastic about ongoing education.

Recognizing dedicated service.

The Altadena Guild Community Service Scholarship is awarded each year to a Huntington Hospital staff member who has demonstrated a dedication to providing excellent care to patients, and to serving the broader community. The 2018 recipient was Steven Gonzales. A patient care assistant, Steven provides assistance to nursing teams throughout the hospital. For the past five years, he has also supported our community by volunteering with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. In addition, he volunteers with the American Red Cross, assisting with

Patricia has been an enthusiastic volunteer with the guild’s Home Tour every year since she joined the group. She assists in the bakery in preparation for the event. (The beautifully decorated cake boxes are her handiwork.) In addition, she greets guests as they stop in at the tour’s Tea Garden for refreshments. A portion of the event’s proceeds benefits Huntington Hospital — funding services for breast cancer patients and underwriting a special scholarship program (see sidebar). When Patricia worked at Huntington Hospital, she received support via another scholarship program, which helped her continue her education. As a result, she says, “I especially appreciate that my volunteer involvement is helping to support scholarships for current employees. “Huntington Hospital is a highly regarded institution, close to home,” she adds. “Joining the guild was a way for me to give back to the hospital, and to the community.”

blood drives throughout the region. Scholarship funding made possible by the Altadena Guild will help Steven complete his studies through Western Governors University. He is scheduled to graduate in spring 2020, with a Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN). “Receiving this scholarship has had a dramatic impact on my educational experience,” he says. “Thanks to them, I was able to focus on my studies and truly perform at my best…. With this degree,” he adds, “I hope to make an even bigger impact on the community and on my patients.”

Riding for a good cause.

From Thursday, April 25, through Sunday, April 28, 2019, the Flintridge La Cañada Guild held its 98th annual horse show at the Flintridge Riding Club in La Cañada Flintridge. This event featured dining, music and, of course, exciting equestrian competitions. Proceeds from this year’s horse show are helping the guild fulfill a generous pledge of support toward the purchase of communications technology for our cancer center. Used in meetings known as tumor boards, the new technology will support information sharing and collaboration among our

lintridge La Cañada Guild members work enthusiastically throughout the year to plan the group’s highly anticipated four-day horse show in support of Huntington Hospital. Now in its 98th year, the event features riding competitions, food, music and fun for the whole family. Proceeds benefit important hospital services, including Huntington Cancer Center. Debbie Turner is a guild member who not only helps with event planning herself throughout the year, but gets her family involved, too. On event day, her husband, Hunt, helps with set-up and her daughters, Audrey and Cameron, present ribbons to horse show participants and help with merchandise sales. “There’s such a feeling of camaraderie in the guild,” Debbie says. “It’s a big team effort to put on our annual horse show, and we take pride in the fact that our small group puts it all together.”

Debbie first joined the Flintridge La Cañada Guild in 2007 at the suggestion of a friend who knew of her love for horses and riding. After attending a single guild meeting, she was hooked. She has been a member ever since. Her involvement to date has included various leadership roles: She served as guild president from 2014 to 2015 and has chaired several committees. In addition, she currently represents the guild on the hospital’s Volunteer Leadership Council, for which she serves as secretary — and she volunteers in our S. Robert and Denise Zeilstra Gift Shop, too.

“I’ve always volunteered, ever since high school,” she says. “I feel it’s important to serve my community, and being in the guild makes it easy to get involved and support the hospital’s work,” she adds. “If you’re interested in fundraising for the hospital, joining a guild is a great way to support its work in the community — and make new friends at the same time. “Our community needs Huntington Hospital,” she continues. “I’d recommend it to anyone who needs medical care — and by raising money through a guild or by donating, you help the hospital get important new technology and make enhancements so it can serve all of us even better.”

H

untington Charity League’s (HCL) 2019 patron cocktail reception mixed high style with fun. In keeping with the event’s Glitz & Glam theme, guests wined, dined, danced and celebrated. They also raised funds toward Huntington Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric care services. The February 9 event, held at The Valley Hunt Club, included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and music. Cori Solan, HCL’s president, delivered opening remarks, and spoke again as the event progressed. In addition, guests heard from Jamie Powers, MD, medical director of neonatology, who shared information about the importance of their support. San Marino City Councilwoman Gretchen Shepherd Romey also participated as a guest speaker.

Support from the start.

HCL is a group of local volunteers dedicated to raising funds in support of the best of care for Huntington Hospital’s youngest patients. A portion of the proceeds from their 2019 patron cocktail reception will help purchase a new state-of-the-art incubator — the GE Giraffe bed — for our NICU. As a result, the group will help to increase comfort and support healing for vulnerable babies: The Giraffe bed creates a therapeutic microenvironment for premature infants, helping to minimize temperature swings, dampen noise and diminish the need to move the baby during care. Funds raised will also benefit our Parent Connection program. Through this service, volunteers — parents who have experienced NICU care at the hospital — provide important support for families of new infants born prematurely or with critical health needs. Some proceeds will, in addition, be designated toward advanced nursing education, via support of The Helen Hancock Advanced Nursing Degree Scholarship program, and toward scholarship assistance for an outstanding student volunteer who is planning to pursue a career in a healthcare-related field.

Big help for little ones.

Members of HCL raise vital funds in support of programs, services and equipment that help Huntington Hospital’s smallest patients and their families. Many thanks to these enthusiastic community members for their friendship and support. Please contact huntingtoncharityleague@ gmail.com to learn more about HCL membership and upcoming events.

Steadfast volunteers, generous donors .

Mary and Blaise Revay

M

ary and Blaise Revay have a deep and enduring relationship with Huntington Hospital. In the 1960s, Mary was a member of our accounting staff. In addition, both she and Blaise have received care here, and they have served as volunteers since 2002. “It was kind of like coming home for me,” says Mary of their volunteer service. “Huntington Hospital is my home field, so to speak.” Since 2010, the Revays have been generous donors to the hospital, too, focusing their support on our cardiac rehabilitation program, which offers a broad array of services to patients who are recovering from coronary artery disease and cardiothoracic surgery. The couple’s contributions were inspired, in part, by Mary’s own positive experience as a patient. “It’s a good program,” she says, “and it’s really helped me. We felt it was something that should be supported.” The Revays are also grateful for other care at the hospital. Mary has received knee surgery here, for example, and “I know they have the best orthopedic group there is,” she says. In addition, she speaks highly of other aspects of our care, based on her experiences over the years. Blaise, too, has been a patient. In 2008, he had a transient ischemic attack, also called a “mini-stroke.” Thanks to the skill and experience of Azhil Durairaj, MD, medical director of cardiology, and R. Fernando Roth, MD, a previously undiagnosed hole in Blaise’s heart was identified and repaired. “They quickly found what was wrong and fixed it,” he says. “Whenever I’ve been a patient at Huntington Hospital, I’ve been treated well,” he adds. “If I’m sick, that’s where I’m going.”

Moving.

Blaise and Mary met and married in the United States, but both are originally from Europe. Born in Hungary, Blaise fled that country with his parents ahead of the Russian occupation, when he was just 3 years old. Eventually, his family settled in France. He came to the United States when he was 19. After serving in the U.S. army, Blaise went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from California Polytechnic State University. He then enjoyed a long career in the aerospace industry, during which he designed airplane components. He retired in 2000. Mary’s family also hails from Hungary, though she was born in Germany after her parents fled to that country as refugees. The family moved to the United States when she was 2 1/2, living in Philadelphia for a few years before settling in South Pasadena. (After Mary and Blaise married in 1971, the couple moved to San Marino, where they still live.) In addition to her time at Huntington Hospital, Mary’s career included working for many years as an office manager for an orthopedic group. Both she and Blaise are now enjoying retirement, but remain busy with their hobbies, travel and volunteer service. Unswerving commitment.

Seventeen years ago, the Revays attended a presentation about volunteer opportunities at the hospital — sparking their longtime involvement as volunteers here. Both started out in patient relations, where their work included visiting patients and providing those extra-mile services that help ensure the greatest comfort. Today, Blaise continues volunteering in patient relations. “I like what I do at the hospital,” he says, “and I plan to do it as long as I can.” Mary now helps in our cardiac rehabilitation program — “in tribute to the good treatment I’ve gotten there,” she notes. “You have to believe in the place you’re volunteering and supporting,” she adds, “and we believe in Huntington Hospital. To start with, the hospital attracts the right people and hires those who have the training, skills, empathy and patience to provide for people when they need it most. I believe that’s a major reason it has the reputation for outstanding care for the community — and I feel our attachment to Huntington Hospital is well placed.”

hoppers at Huntington Collection may not have met Cynthia Flores or Nancy Logg. These two longtime volunteers are not behind the cash register or assisting customers on the floor. Yet they are instrumental in the Collection’s work — helping to make it the destination for discerning shoppers looking for quality donated and consigned goods. Cynthia and Nancy’s volunteer service takes place behind the scenes. Working in the back room of the Collection, they help receive, sort and price items. Volunteering in the Collection’s back room does involve meaningful contact with community members — though in a different way than in the front of the store. “Some people come in to donate items from a loved one who’s passed away,” Cynthia explains. “They may be teary-eyed. I talk to them about how they’re feeling,” she adds. “It’s important.” Strong ties.

Cynthia, who has been volunteering at the Collection for more than 30 years, has an even longer history of association with Huntington Hospital as a whole. She first volunteered at the hospital when she was a high school student. Later, she served as a member of our staff: As a medical secretary for almost 20 years, she worked in various departments of the hospital. In addition, she has been a patient here and her daughter was born here. “The hospital’s been a big part of my life,” she says, adding that she continues as a volunteer because, “I think it’s important to give something back. Huntington Hospital has been good to me.” Nancy’s connection with the hospital has also been significant. In 17 years of volunteering here, she has donated her time to errand and escort, as well as to the S. Robert and Denise Zeilstra Gift Shop — and of course, to the Collection. After she retired from her job as secretary for a local high school counselor, “I decided I needed to do something more,” she says, “and volunteering at Huntington Hospital was something I’d always wanted to do.” Having always enjoyed treasure hunting at garage sales and thrift stores, Nancy knew the Collection was a natural fit for her. The fact that proceeds from sales at the Collection help support Huntington Senior Care Network (SCN) is the icing on the cake for her: “Now that I’m a senior,” she says, “this is especially meaningful to me. I feel very fortunate that I’ve been able to help out.”

Proceeds from Huntington Collection help support Huntington Senior Care Network’s invaluable services for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and their families. Above, a recent check presentation.

Your giving

matters.

Our Huntington Senior Care Network (SCN) works to help older adults and adults with disabilities be healthy, productive and independent. Its services are made possible thanks to proceeds from Huntington Collection, along with gifts from members of our community. Amelia Gonzales is one of the many people who have benefited thanks to this support.

A

melia is an active member of her community. Five days a week, she takes part in classes and other events at her local senior center. She also participates in a Bible study class at her church once a week and is a regular at services and parish events. At other times, she might be found watering the plants outside her duplex, going on walks with her neighbors, visiting with family members and friends who live nearby, or taking in a movie. When Amelia began to require support to maintain her active lifestyle and continue to live safely and independently at home, she turned to Huntington Senior Care Network (SCN) for help. She is now one of more than 430 local seniors who benefit from SCN’s Multipurpose Senior Services Program each year. This program provides home- and community-based services to seniors (as well as individuals with disabilities) who are eligible for placement in a nursing facility, but who wish to remain at home. An SCN social worker, Natalie Simons, coordinated an inhome assessment and then worked with Amelia’s doctor to obtain resources Amelia needed. These included a GoSafe personal alert button and a lift chair for her home, both of which help her to remain safe and independent. Natalie continues to visit Amelia regularly and to connect her with additional resources as needed. “I’m so grateful to SCN,” Amelia says. “Natalie has done so much for me already. She checks in with me every month and I know I can always call her if there’s anything else I need. “I want to stay home as long as I can,” she adds. “I have family and friends here, I keep busy, and I have a lot of fun.”

Helpful information as you age.

Amelia’s story was initially published in the Winter/ Spring 2019 edition of the 50+ HealthConnection newsletter. 50+ HealthConnection is a free membership program of Huntington Senior Care Network (SCN). It helps keep seniors up to date about health issues and provides important information about taking care of loved ones. Available discounts and advice can also help you save money. If you are 50 years of age or older and would like to become a member of 50+ HealthConnection, visit www.huntingtonhospital. org/newsletters, enter your information and check the 50+ HealthConnection box. If you prefer, you can leave a message on the membership line at (626) 397-3147 or (800) 664‑4664 and a member of SCN’s staff will be in touch to sign you up by phone. In addition to future publications, you will also receive a membership card so you can begin enjoying all other 50+ member benefits, which include discounts at Huntington Hospital’s S. Robert and Denise Zeilstra Gift Shop and at our cafeteria.

’m a big advocate of volunteerism,” says Irene Snoddy. “It’s rewarding for both sides. You’re helping a wonderful organization like Huntington Hospital and, at the same time, you’re making connections and meeting new people.” Irene has been a regular volunteer at our S. Robert and Denise Zeilstra Gift Shop for two years. She and her husband, Jon, also support the hospital financially — and part of their inspiration for doing so was the care their twins, Michael and Phillip, received in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). That was 22 years ago, and, “Since the kids were born, we’ve always donated to the NICU,” Irene says. “The little babies there need extra help, and the doctors and nurses are so wonderful.”

Care received at Huntington Hospital also inspired Irene to begin her volunteer work here. “As a patient,” she says, “seeing the volunteers was always a highlight of my day. I wanted to give back in the same way they were doing.” Following her application for a volunteer position, she was assigned to the gift shop where she works at the cash register, helps customers and creates attractive displays highlighting the shop’s diverse inventory. “It’s perfect,” she says of the assignment, emphasizing how much she enjoys seeing the smiles on the faces of the customers she serves — and helping bring joy to their day. “The gift shop is an oasis,” she says. “It’s a place for visitors to come and lose themselves, when they might otherwise be anxious or stressed about a loved one’s illness.” In addition, she notes, she particularly loves seeing the excitement of parents and siblings who come in to pick out gifts for babies born at the hospital. When not volunteering in our gift shop, Irene can often be found gardening, sailing with her husband, or entertaining friends at the couple’s home. She also loves reading and enjoys decorating and cooking. Her volunteer work, she says, helps her maintain a positive attitude in life. “We hear so much negative stuff,” she explains, “but when people come into the gift shop, they smile and relax. It’s great to be part of an organization that has that impact.”

Advocate. Spring 2019.   91

Dear friends: Every year, Huntington Hospital touches the lives of thousands of patients. The physicians and staff here strive to provide the highest-quality care to every patient — and we are nationally recognized for this quality. Our success would not be possible without the generous support of our philanthropic partners: These individuals and institutions play a critical role, not only helping the hospital to provide best-in-class medicine for current patients, but also supporting preparations for the future of care. My own involvement with the hospital spans three decades. Throughout, my husband, Woody, and I have remained deeply impressed by the hospital’s commitment to excellence. Recently, I accepted the invitation to serve as chair of this exceptional institution’s board of directors and am grateful for this opportunity to play an even greater role in its work. I hope you will join Woody and me in supporting the hospital. Together, our gifts will make possible the very best of care — for ourselves and for our loved ones. I believe this is something we all value. Thank you in advance.
