New Path For over 15 years, Harding Fine Arts

Academy has led the way in arts-integrated education for high schoolers in Oklahoma City. Our mission is to prepare students for college in an academically challenging, arts-integrated environment. Our vision is to create an arts-filled, flagship education, propelling creative enduring engagement in society.

At the Academy we share a sense of purpose and values with a culture of empowerment, innovation, leadership, and teamwork.

Students are encouraged to share their experiences with one another and to work together as colleagues toward a common goal. Students are expected to collaborate to accomplish tasks in leadership, academics, the arts, and co-curricular activities, whether in or out of the classroom.

And now the Firehawk Family is growing! As a public charter school overseen by a nonprofit board, the Academy requires a state agency to sponsor and authorize the school. Starting this year, the Academy will be sponsored by the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. As Oklahoma’s liberal arts college, the university provides a distinctive education in the liberal arts and sciences, supporting both its interdisciplinary core curriculum and major fields of study with superior teaching.

Beyond the Classroom: Teacher of the Year Lee Ann Sturm was selected as

Harding Fine Arts Academy’s first Teacher of the Year! Coach Sturm has taught at the Academy for six years and currently teaches AP Government, AP US History, AP Human Geography, Honors Geometry and Government as well as being the girls’ basketball coach and co-sponsor for Spectrum and Black Student Association.

At the start of the spring semester, every teacher nominated a colleague they felt was deserving of this award. From the nominees, three finalists were selected and voted on again by their fellow faculty. Read more about Coach Sturm in our interview.

What inspired you to choose teaching as a career? What made you want to teach at Harding?

I always knew teaching was my calling ever since I was a kid in school and had some of the best teachers, elementary through high school. I always wanted to do something to give back to them as a way to say thanks for making my experiences in school great and for shaping me into who I am today. I heard about HFAA through a friend who taught here, received a tour, and was immediately inspired. The mission and vision of the school are things that you don’t hear about elsewhere. Too often, arts programs are the first program cut because of budget shortfalls.

But the arts helped shape me growing up and was one of the most important parts of my education journey. So, to hear of a school that was committed to incorporating that into core classes, building up amazing visual and performing arts programs, and offering so many different electives to students – I knew it was something special.

What is your favorite aspect of teaching at Harding?

The students are amazing! We have an incredible group of young leaders that care so much about each other and the communities 2

they are in. We have a student body that i s accepting to all, regardless of background or identities. With my basketball teams over the years, I have been able to see girls walk into the gym for the first time with little to no experience and turn into some of the best teammates and most coachable members of the group. Being able to share my passions and experiences with students in the classroom and in the gym is something of which I am very grateful.

How has your role as a teacher evolved over the years you’ve been in the classroom?

I have been able to make mistakes without fear of retribution, both from admin and my students. I have grown a lot in settling into my teaching styles and evolved my teaching philosophy to always be centered around student needs and outcomes. If I know an assignment, activity, or program would positively benefit our students, I will work to make it happen. Recently, I have worked more on developing new teaching techniques, especially with projected-based and activity-based learning, as well as diving deeper in the Oklahoma A+ Essentials. Being a teacher means being a lifelong learner, so being able to adapt to new content materials and new teaching strategies is important.

What has been your best moment teaching?

I recently had a former student reach out to me saying how thankful they were to be in my Geometry class years ago and how math had never been their best subject but really took a lot away from my class. It’s wonderful hearing about those success stories your students have even when you don’t always see them or know what stuck with them. Just getting to hear from past students and to know you made even a small enough impact means everything to me.

A Different Approach...

The Academy’s unique curriculum and instructional methods are key to our students’ success. By merging the arts and academics, the Academy has created an engaging educational atmosphere that promotes critical thinking and problem-based learning. This approach resonates with the creative learner and provides an academic fit for students who are unchallenged by traditional methodology.

By inspiring students to demonstrate what they have learned in a variety of ways, students explore the curriculum at a deeper level and have greater retention.

We are all works of art in progress Despite many challenges, the students, teachers, and administration at the Academy continued to make progress on a variety of projects. With help from the Harding Fine Arts Academy Foundation, they were able to meet the needs of the students and teachers, provide fun digital programming, and start renovations on the historic school building.

Virtual Leadership in Arts & Education Awards Due to COVID-19, the annual Leadership in Arts & Education Awards was switched to a virtual format. In 2020 the award ceremony was pre-recorded and shared online for patrons to watch. Renate and Chuck Wiggin were honored with the John & Joy Reed Belt Award and BancFirst was honored with the Community Impact Award. These awards are given to persons, couples and corporations who have made a sustained and lasting impact on arts and education in Oklahoma City.

Bridging the Technical Divide

As students and teachers moved to an online, virtual learning environment, it was imperative we do everything possible to properly equip and empower students for success. With help from the community, the Foundation was able to raise nearly $25,000 to provide laptops to all teachers and students who needed one as well as give internet access to those who did not have a reliable, consistent connection.

Take Center Stage

In the fall of 2020, we upgraded our auditorium by installing a new 20-foot projector screen, high-definition projector, sound system, and lighting system. This long overdue renovation would not have been possible without the support of our generous donors and patrons. COVID-19 prevented students from taking full advantage of the new technology, but the students are eager and ready to take center stage this school year.

The Little Musical that Could This past year has been especially hard on the students who have not been able to practice their artistic craft. But that did not stop the Original Musical Writing Club! For five weeks they met over video conference calls to write, compose, design, choreograph, and stage an original musical. They had the opportunity to perform At World’s End in the newly upgraded auditorium in March.

That same evening, Senior Annie Brown presented her original work, Dear Pen Pal for the community. This performance was the only live performance at Harding. Audience and cast members were socially distanced and performers were required to wear clear see-through masks.

Teacher Resource Fund In February of 2021, the Foundation embarked on a crowdfunding campaign with the help of the teachers and staff for the Teacher Resource Fund. This fund is used exclusively for teacher classrooms to help them purchase supplies, equipment, and materials. Through their diligent work, the teachers raised a little over $4,000 for their classrooms. With students working and learning from home, all funds had to be used for distance learning needs. Teachers were able to provide take-home art kits, purchase document cameras, new audio equipment, and new video cameras for their virtual classrooms.

Ignite Imagination Thanks to the dedicated support of the HFAA Foundation and the Parent Teacher Organization, the library is on its ways to being fully functional next school year. The PTO has collected and sorted hundreds of books, purchased a digital checkout system and have begun adding barcodes and cataloging all of the books. The next step is to add new furniture to make the space inviting, comfortable, and functional.

Unconventional Art Another casualty of the pandemic was Harding’s annual arts festival – Ignite Arts Festival. Every March, students from the Academy submit artwork to be displayed and sold during the festival as well as perform live for friends and family. This Festival not only showcases the talent at Harding, but it also acts as a fundraiser for the Fine Arts Department. This March, the Ignite Arts Festival went virtual. Performances from students were pre-recorded and released online throughout the day. Artwork was submitted by students and displayed in our online gallery. The gallery can still be viewed at www.igniteartsfestival.com.

Prom – A Teenage Rite of Passage Senior Prom is a rite of passage for many young people – it is indicative of their transition from teenagers to young adults.

It is meant to be a celebration of their high school experience; the last hurrah! However, Prom can be expensive. This financial barrier could prevent students from enjoying or participating in the experience. Jamese Siranga, HFAA Student Support Specialist, set out to re-establish the prom closet for the students at Harding. “Everyone deserves to feel confident on their prom night.” said Mrs. Siranga. This closet provides dresses, handbags, shoes, jewelry, and menswear for the students to borrow on their big night.

A special thanks to Tres Jolie for providing dozens of dresses and pieces of jewelry to jump-start our efforts.

Project Gateway Harding was able to provide free regalia to all graduating seniors, thanks to a generous donation from an Anonymous Family Foundation and individual donors. Many of our families experienced financial hardships this year, which left them unable to pay senior dues for the regalia. This generous donation provided the gown, tassels, stole, and cap worn at the outdoor, drive-thru ceremony.

Diversity Includes Disabilities Initiative Harding strives to be a welcoming and inclusive environment, however due to the historic nature of the building, people with physical disabilities are not able to easily navigate the premises. This spring, the Foundation raised nearly $16,000 towards building improvements to increase accessibility. This includes adding automated handicap doors, repaving parts of the sidewalk and repairing the front wheelchair ramp. This is only a small step forward to full ADA compliance. The next phase includes raising money to install two elevators in our four-story building. Becoming fully ADA compliant is complicated and costly; we hope you will keep the Foundation in mind for future contributions.

The Power of Paint Over the last several years researchers have found that the color of one’s surroundings – walls, desks, chairs, and more – can have a significant impact on student productivity and happiness. Thanks to the support of various donors, we are repainting the entire third floor, 12 classrooms, all stairwells and the 2nd floor hallway leading to the dojo.

School and Foundation Board members, teachers, and student representatives met earlier this semester to create a new paint palette, which included bright, fun accent colors.

H A R D I N G Engaging Alumni C O M M U N I T Y The Harding Alumni Association (HAA) was created for the purpose of fostering a spirit of loyalty and promoting the general welfare of Harding Fine Arts Academy through mentorship, professional development programs and special events. The HAA officially launched at Harding’s Sweet 16 Birthday Bash in August.

Members of the Harding Alumni Association will be invited to all social events and reunions, receive a free t-shirt and car sticker, discounts on Foundation events, including

the Leadership in Arts & Education Awards, and receive exclusive communication from HAA Leadership. Members can also work directly with current students to provide volunteer and internship opportunities, mentorship, and professional development programs.

The Harding Alumni Association is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

With the dedication of their time and talents, the Association will raise funds for Harding, host events and provide exciting and engaging programs.

Meet Annie Brown ‘21

Annie Brown is a recent graduate of Harding Fine Arts Academy. While a student, Annie was involved in may clubs and organizations including Harding’s chapter of International Thespian Society, Student Council, Student Ambassador, dance and drama department productions, and was the manager for HFAA’s Volleyball team her senior year. Her favorite arts discipline is musical theatre. “I think something so wonderful happens when a group of performers get together to not only share a story on stage but create something that allows both them and their audience to feel new emotions and experience new things.” In her opinion, the most important thing she has learned during her time at the Academy was to have confidence in herself and her art. She describes the teachers as dedicated, supportive, and caring. It is this campus culture that has allowed her to write and compose an original musical, Dear Pen Pal. In October 2020, Annie submitted the musical to a regional thespian competition and won!

Over the summer the script and score were published, songs were professionally recorded and high schools across the country started purchasing it for their school productions. Annie plans to attend Southeast Missouri State to study Musical Theatre and Writing. She is excited to meet new people and develop a deeper appreciation for her craft.

Meet Chrysia Cameron ‘22

Chrysia Cameron is a senior at Harding Fine Arts Academy. She was drawn to the Academy because of its unique arts-integrated curriculum and how classes were designed to help creative and visual learners understand complex subjects. She has been involved in visual arts, dance, and choir. She is especially skilled in pencil sketching, portraits, and black and white realism. Chrysia has been sketching and drawing since she was a young child – often doodling in her notebooks and journals. To Chrysia, the Academy can best be described as welcoming, kind and encouraging. It is a place where students come from all over the Oklahoma City with different life experiences but are still accepted and loved for who they are. “Since my first day at Harding, I think I definitely got better at not judging other people and respecting people different from me. This was something I would not have learned at a larger school.”

She believes the welcoming and accepting atmosphere is something truly special about the Academy. Chrysia is most excited to be back in the building full-time and she is eager to continue to learn and grow in her academics and art disciplines.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board of Directors has decided to postpone the Annual Leadership in Arts & Education Awards until next spring.

For the last 9 years, Harding Fine Arts Academy has honored individuals, couples, and organizations for their outstanding contribution to the arts and education in Oklahoma through the Leadership in Arts & Education Awards. This event also helps the Foundation raise mission-critical funds for the Student Success Fund. These unrestricted dollars are used to purchase supplies, equipment, new technology, and for preserving our historic building.

Meet the Honorees9th Annual Leadership in Arts & Education Awards Ken and Mary Ann Fergeson John & Joy Reed Belt Award

Ken and Mary Ann have collected art all of their married life, starting with posters in college, then works on paper when they first got out of college and paintings and pottery

at arts festivals. The Fergeson’s credit their big mistake to buying a house next door to Ben Pickard. Ben started selling them art on an installment plan and they got to hang it while they paid it off. Ben really helped them develop their love of art and artists.

Ken Fergeson is a community banker and Chairman of NBC Oklahoma. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Bankers Association’s 2018 Inaugural hall of Fame Class and into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2009.He has received the 1994 and 2000 Oklahoma Governor’s Arts Award, 2019 Oklahoma Creativity Ambassador Award, and 2019 Volunteer Service Award from the Paseo Arts Association.

Fergeson has served as chairman of both the American Bankers Association as well as the Oklahoma Bankers Association. Ken

created the NBC Oklahoma Artist Series, a program that champions Oklahoma artists by commissioning them to create an original piece of art. Ken then turns the art into prints, posters and postcards for bank customers as gifts. Ken has also been responsible for large-scale commissions of public art.

Ken is past-chairman of the Mid-America Arts Alliance Board and Americans for the Arts.

In addition, he serves on the boards of the Oklahoma Humanities Council, Oklahoma Arts Institute, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Oklahomans for the Arts, the Three Rivers Foundation for the Arts and Sciences, and the Oklahoma State University Postal Plaza Art Museum.

Ken holds a bachelor’s degree in business and a masters in economics from Texas Tech University. Ken and Mary Ann live in Altus, Oklahoma.

She has been cited in many publications, articles and books. Described

by Sir Ken Robinson as “one of the most impressive people I know in education,” Jean was an elementary principal in Oklahoma City for seventeen years and was

Rand Elliott ’68 Outstanding Harding High School Alumni

Rand believes a successful project is the result of listening well, poetic expression, and impeccable execution.

Projects, processes, and inspiration have grown from Rand’s Oklahoma roots and been applied to designs in over 50 cities in the United States and London, England.

Since the firm’s opening in 1976, the firm has received 373 international, national, regional, and local awards including ten National AIA Honor Awards. His work has been featured in more than 80 books and 350 periodicals published in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Japan, Italy, France, Australia, Hong Kong, China, Turkey, The Netherlands, Portugal, and Russia.

Rand Elliott, FAIA, President of Rand Elliott Architects, has served as principal of his own architectural/interior/graphics design firm since age 27. REA has distinguished itself as a forerunner of innovative architectural

DeVante Parker ’11 Outstanding Harding Fine Arts Alumni

Rand graduated at the top of his class as the Alpha Rho Chi Medalist at Oklahoma State University in 1973. He is a member of the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Architects Committee

DeVante M. Parker was born at Tinker Air Force Base (AFB), Oklahoma. He lived in the Dallas area for a few years, but then returned to Oklahoma City. DeVante graduated from Harding Fine Arts Academy in 2011. He attended Southern Nazarene University with an athletic scholarship for two years and transferred Bryan University where he attained his BS in Exercise Science. DeVante actually began his career in personal training at the age of 20, but in December of 2020, he started his first personal training company, Fit Now Systems.

In 2017, DeVante became an Advanced Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

In Oklahoma, Rand acted as president of the Central Oklahoma Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (1990-91) and served as the Chapter’s Program Chairman (1995-2002). In 2002, Rand became the first Oklahoman invited to participate in the prestigious Bruce Goff Fellowship lecture series at the University of Oklahoma. Rand has also been awarded the AIA Central Oklahoma Chapter William Wayne Caudill Award in 2005, Lifetime Achievement Award from OKC Beautiful in 2009, and the Business in the Arts Award from Arts Council of Oklahoma as part of the annual Governor’s Arts Awards. In 2010, Rand and the firm were announced as Journal Record’s Innovator of the Year.

Rand was inducted into the 22nd Hall of Fame for Interior Design Magazine in November 2006 and recognized in 2010 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Oklahoma State University.

Looking to become more active in his community, DeVante enjoys volunteering his time at the annual Festival of the Arts and coaching youth sports at the East Side YMCA. Recently, he has dedicated his energies to re-establishing the Harding Alumni Association for which he serves as the President of the Board of Directors.

DeVante considers himself a “Jack of all trades” – often taking on new challenges and learning new skills. He enjoys helping others and learning about stocks, forex, and currency exchanges. In his free time, he enjoys working out in the gym, and playing basketball, soccer, and videogames.

Harding Fine Arts Academy Foundation was established in spring 2019 for the purpose of raising funds and supporting the programs and activities of Harding Fine Arts Academy. The Foundation not only raises money for the school’s programs and curriculum, but it also acts as the landlord for the historic school building.
