10.Spin the helical gear to make sure there is no end play or that the bearings are not too tight.

Axle Assembly

1.Lubricate the oil seal. Place the seal over the axle shaft with the spring side toward the oil.

3.Apply a thin layer of gasket compound to the housing to seal the axle seal. See Figure7-83

7.Remove the seal pressing ring.

8.Apply three vertical lines of thread-locking compound (P/N990-669) to the threads of the axle.

9.Install the clamp nut shoulder side down. Hold the axle to keep it from turning as the clamp nut is tightened.

10.Use clamp nut tool (P/N 761-870/T07) and torque the clamp nut to 18 ft. lbs. (24Nm). See Figure7-87.

11.Rotate the axle and tighten the clamp nut. Repeat this step six times to make sure the bearing cones are seated into the cups.

12.Loosen the clamp nut, then re-tighten to 5ft. lbs. (7 Nm) using the rotate, tightening process until the clamp nut does not turn any further.

13.Apply thread-locking compound (P/N1013829) to the screw in the clamp nut. See Figure7-88 . Torque the screw to 128 in. lbs. (14.5 Nm). Make sure open end of the clamp nut does not touch.
