CAUTION Incorrectlyinflated tyreswear rapidlyand seriouslyaffect the vehicle’ssafetyand road handling characteristics.
Caring for your tyres Alwaysdrivewith considerationfor the conditionof the tyresand frequentlyinspect the treadand sidewallsfor signsof distortion or damage(inparticular, look for lumps, cuts and bulges).
Tyre pressures Tyrepressuresshould be checkedat least once a weekwith normalroad use, but should be checkedDAILY if the vehicleis used off-road. Checkthe pressures, includingthe spare, when the tyresarecold (airpressurenaturally increasesin warmtyres). The recommended pressuresaregivenin the ’Generaldata’ section.
WARNING If the vehiclehas been parked in strong sunlight or is used in high ambient temperatures,DONOTreduce tyre pressures;instead, move the vehicleinto shade and allow the tyresto cool before checking. Tyre wear Some tyresfittedas originalequipmenthave wearindicatorsmouldedinto the tread pattern. When the treadhas worn down to 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) the indicatorsstart appearingon the surfaceof the treadpattern, producingthe effectof a continuousband acrossthe width of the tyre. A tyreMUST be replacedas soon as an indicatorband becomesvisibleor the tread depth reachesthe minimumpermittedby legislation. Treaddepth must be checkedregularly(at everymaintenanceservice,or more frequently).Alwaysreplacea tyrebeforethe treadreachesa remainingdepth of 1/16 in. (1.6 mm). DONOTdrivewith tyresworn to thislimit;the safetyof the vehicleand its occupantswillbe adverselyaffected.
NOTE: Afteroff-roaduse, checkto makesure thereareno lumpsor bulgesin the tyresor exposureof the ply or cord structure. Valve caps Keepthe valvecapsscreweddown firmlyto preventdirtfrom enteringthe valve.
UniformTyre QualityGrading Qualitygradescan be found, whereapplicable, on the sidewallof the tyrebetweenthe tread shoulderand maximumsectionwidth. For example: Treadwear200, TractionAA, TemperatureA. Tyresthat aredeep tread,winter-typesnow tyresareexemptfrom thesegrading requirementsand, consequently, the tyres fittedto your vehiclemay not carrythese markings. Allpassengercartyresmust conformto federalsafetyrequirementsin additionto thesegrades. Treadwear: The treadweargradeis a comparativerating basedon the wearrateof the tyrewhen tested under controlledconditionson a specified governmenttestcourse. For example;a tyre graded150 would wear11/2 timesas wellon the governmentcourseas a tyregraded100. The relativeperformanceof tyresdepends upon the actualconditionsof use, and may departsignificantlyfrom the norm due to variationsin drivinghabits, servicepractices and differencesin road characteristicsand climate. Traction: The tractiongrades, from highestto lowest areAA, A, B and C. Thesegradesrepresenta tyre’sabilityto stop on wet pavementas measuredunder controlledconditionson specifiedgovernmenttestsurfacesof asphalt and concrete.A tyremarked ’C’ may have poor tractionperformance. WARNING The tractiongrade assigned to this tyreis based on straight-aheadbrakingtests,and does not include acceleration, cornering, hydroplaning,or peak traction characteristics.
Temperature: The temperaturegradesA (thehighest),B and C, and representthe tyre’sresistanceto the generationof heat and itsabilityto dissipate heat when testedunder controlledconditions on a specifiedindoorlaboratorytestwheel. Sustainedhigh temperaturecan causethe materialof the tyreto degenerateand reduce tyrelife, and excessivetemperaturecan lead to sudden tyrefailure. The grade ’C’ correspondsto a levelof performancewhichallpassengercartyres must meetunder the FederalMotor Safety StandardNo 109. Grades ’B’ and ’A’ representhigherlevelsof performanceon the laboratorytestwheelthan the minimumrequiredby law. WARNING Temperaturegrades are establishedusing tyresthat are properlyinflated and not overloaded.Excessivespeed, under-inflationor excessiveloading, either separatelyor in combination, can cause heat build-up and possibletyrefailure.
Replacementtyres Wheelrimsand tyresarematchedto suitthe handlingcharacteristicsof the vehicle. For safety,ALWAYS checkthat replacementtyres complywith the manufacturer’soriginal specificationand that the load ratingshown on the sidewallis the sameas that of the originalequipment.Contactyour Land Rover retailerfor furtherinformationor assistance.
WARNING ALWAYS use the same make and type of radial-plytyresfront and back.DONOTuse cross-plyor tubed tyres, and DONOT interchangetyresfrom front to back vehiclehandling could be adversely affected. Do not replacewheels with any type other than genuine Land Roverparts.Wheelsand tyresare designed for both off-roadand on-road use and have a veryimportant influence upon the correctoperation of the suspensionsystemsand vehiclehandling. Alternativewheels, which do not meet original equipment specifications, should not be fitted.

WARNING To preventpersonalinjury, before jacking the vehiclethe air suspensionsystemmust be ’locked’ - this will preventthe suspension from self-levellingor the ride height from changing whilst the vehicleis supportedby the wheel changing jack.
To ’lock’ the suspension: 1. First, ensurethat eitherStandardor High rideheightareengaged- thiswillprovide sufficientspacebeneaththe vehicleto locateand operatethe jack. 2. Openthe tailgate. 3. Switchon the hazardwarninglights. The hazardwarninglightsMUST remain flashingand the tailgateopen THROUGHOUT THE WHOLEwheelchangingprocess. Usingthe wheel chocks WARNING Before raisingthe vehicle,it is ESSENTIAL to chockone of the road wheels; the parking brake acts on the transmission, not on the rear wheels, and thereforemay not hold the vehiclewhen raised.
If possible, positionthe vehicleon level ground, chockingboth sidesof the wheel diagonallyoppositethe one to be removed. If jackingthe vehicleon a slopeis unavoidable, placethe chockson the downhill sideof the two oppositewheels. The wheelchocksarestowedwith the jack, jacklever, wheelbraceand steelsparewheel beneaththe loadspacefloor.
IMPORTANTINFORMATION Beforejackingthe vehiclealwaysobserve the followingprecautions! • Parkyour vehicleawayfrom the thoroughfare, and makeyour passengerswaitin a safearea
AWAY from the vehicle. • Positionthe warningtriangleat an appropriatedistancefrom the vehicleto warnothertraffic. • Applythe parkingbrakeand select gearposition ’P’ in Low or High range. • Ensurethe airsuspensionsystemis locked, and removethe starterkey. • NEVERjackthe vehiclewith passengersinside,or with a caravan or trailerconnected! • NEVERworkbeneaththe vehicle with the jackas the only meansof support. The jackis designedfor wheelchangingonly!
Removingthe spare wheel Fullyopen the tailgateand hinge the rear portionof the parcelshelfforward. Unlatchand raisethe loadspacefloorpanel and then securethe panelin a raisedposition by engagingthe stay(asshown). Usingthe wheelbrace, removethe spare wheelretainingnut. Pullthe loop of the webbingrearward;the wheelwillbe raisedup and liftedonto the reartailgate.
NOTE: A warningtriangleis stowedon the undersideof the loadspacefloorpanel(see ’Warningtriangle’). CAUTION The wheels are extremelyheavy.Take care when lifting and particularlywhen removing the spare wheel from the loadspace.
Operatingthe jack Slot the two partsof the jacklevertogether, ensuringthat the springclipprotrudesfrom the engagementslotwherethe two partsjoin (seeinset ’A’).Closethe jackreleasevalveby using the notched end of the jackleverto turn the valvefullyclockwise(seeinset ’B’).Insert the leverinto the socketas shown (inset ’C’) and twistthe leverto lockit onto the socket. Pump the leverup and down to raisethe jack. To lowerthe jack, withdrawthe leverand slot the notched end overthe pegs on the release valve.Slowlyturn the releasevalve anti-clockwise,allowingthe weightof the vehicleto lowerthe jack. WARNING • Ensure the jack is positioned on firm, level ground. • DONOTuse the jack to raisethe vehicle until you have carefullyread and understood ’Positioning the jack’ later in this section. If in doubt, consultyour retailer. • Care must be taken to avoid accidental contactwith any underbody parts, especiallythe hot exhaust system components, likelyto cause personal injuryduring raisingor lowering of the vehicle. • Ensure that the space under and around the vehicleis free from obstructionas it is lowered.
Positioning the jack Beforepositioningthe jack, ensurethat the air suspensionsystemis ’locked’ (keyremoved from starterswitch, hazardlightsswitchedon, and tailgateopen). If the vehiclehad previouslysettledto Low rideheight(or Access),it willbe necessaryto improve accessbeneaththe vehicleby startingthe engineand raisingthe vehicleto Standardor Highrideheightbeforepositioningthe jack. Alwayspositionthe jackfrom the front or rear of the vehicledirectlyin linewith the jacking points.
WARNING • NEVERuse the jack from the side of the vehicle. • ALWAYS use the complete, two piece, jackingleverthroughout to minimise any accidentalcontactwith a hot exhaust system. • ONLYjack the vehicleusing the jack location points describedor damage to the vehiclecould occur. Rearjackingpoint: Push the mud flapup overthe tyreto allow clearaccess.Positionthe jackso that, when raised,it engageswith the rearaxlecasing immediatelybelowthe airspringand as close as possibleto the shockabsorbermounting bracket(seeillustration). Front jackingpoint: Positionthe jackso that, when raised,it will engagewith the front axlecasingimmediately belowthe airspring(seeillustration). The cradleof the jackmust locatebetweenthe end of the axleand the point wherethe radiusarm attachesto the axle(seeillustration).
Changing a wheel Beforeraisingthe vehicle, ensurethat allthe precautionslistedat the beginningof this sectionhavebeen observed. Also, ensurethat the wheelchocksare correctlypositioned(asdescribedpreviously) and that the airsuspensionsystemis ’locked’ at Standardor Highrideheight.
WARNING To preventany accidentalchange in the ride height or automatic levelling of the suspension, the air suspensionsystemmust remain inhibited during the WHOLEwheel changing process- to achieve this,ALWAYS removethe key from the starterswitchand ensure that the tailgate remainsopen and the hazard lights are operating throughout. • Usethe wheelbraceto slackenthe wheel nuts halfa turn anti-clockwise. • Raisethe vehicleuntilthe tyreis clearof the ground and removethe wheelnuts and wheel(DONOTdamagethe surfaceof alloywheelsby placingthem facedown on the road). • Usean approvedanti-seizecompound to treatthe wheel-mountingspigotto minimisethe tendencyfor adhesion betweenthe wheeland the spigot.Ensure that no oilor compound comesinto contactwith the brakecomponents. If, due to an emergencysituation, thistreatment is not practicable;refitthe sparewheelfor the timebeing, but removeand treatthe wheelat the earliestopportunity. • Fitthe sparewheeland tightenthe wheel nuts, ensuringthey arefirmlyseated.DO
NOTfullytightenwhilstthe tyreis clearof the ground.
WARNING When fitting a wheel, ensure that the mating faces of the hub and wheel are clean and free from rust- an accumulationof dirt or rustcould cause the wheel nuts to become loose and resultin an accident.
• Lowerthe vehicleand removethe jackand wheelchocks. • Tightenthe wheelnuts in an alternating pattern(everyothernut) untilallarefully tightened.DONOTOVERTIGHTENby using foot pressureor extensionbarson the wheelbrace. At the earliestopportunity checkthe wheelnut torque(see ’General data’ section). • Finally, checkthe tyrepressure(see ’Generaldata’ section)at the earliest opportunity. Care of the jack Examinethe jackoccasionally;cleanand greasethe movingparts, particularlythe ram, to preventcorrosion. To avoidcontamination, the jackshould alwaysbe stowedin itsfullyclosedposition. Wheel centrecap Afterfittingthe sparewheel,it willbe necessaryto removethe centrecap from the replacedroad wheel,in orderto stow the wheelin the sparewheelcompartment. Usinga suitableblunt instrument(thehandle of a largescrewdriver, for example)applylight pressureto the rearof the cap. Usehand pressureonly to replacethe cap. Replacingthe spare wheel Preferablycleanand dry the wheelbefore stowingit in the vehicle. Lay the webbingflatacrossthe lowertailgate and placethe wheelfacedown with the rear edge of the tyrein linewith the markon the webbing. Graspthe webbingloop, raisethe wheelfrom the tailgate, and lowerinto position, then fit and tightenthe wheelsecuringnut.
IMPORTANTINFORMATION Afterwheelchangingalwayssecuretools, chocks, jackand sparewheelin their correctstoragepositions.
Warningtriangle The warningtriangleis securedto the undersideof the loadspacefloor.Assembleby turningthe baseto lieat rightanglesto the red triangle, then raisethe sidearmsand join them at the apexas shown in the illustration. If a vehicleis accidentallyimmobilised(due to a punctureor accidentfor example)and is parkedin a hazardouslocation, placethe warningtriangleto the rearof the distressed vehicle.Positionthe triangleat least60 feet (18 metres)from the vehicleto givesufficient advancewarningto otherroad users.
