A TIMELESS AND VERSATILE MATERIAL, RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY.

European Oak is one of the longest-standing timbers to be found in construction and can be used in a wide range of applications. Known for its strength, durability and aesthetic beauty, it has been at the heart of UK construction through the centuries, a favourite for architects and designers to use, dating as far back as 1200’s.

Oak trees are deeply embedded in the history and culture of the UK. For centuries, rituals have been held in oak groves, vows have been exchanged beneath the shelter of oak's expansive branches, acorns were often carried as charms and the Yule Log, adorned with holly and mistletoe for Christmas, was customarily hewn from oak.

Things changed in the 18th century, when the use of oak was very much controlled by the demands of naval ship building, and ultimately led to a decline in the use of oak in construction. That being said, many of the historical applications of oak usage still are current today, as detailed overleaf.

Oak Framing

Structural oak beams have been used for centuries thanks to their exceptional strength and longevity and are still used to creating robust frameworks that can withstand the test of time, whilst providing an ageless visual appeal.

Joinery & Furniture Manufacturing

Oak offers a range of features that enhance both interiors and exteriors, adding a prestigious feel to any project. Whether used in staircases, flooring, doors, window frames or cabinetry, oak's natural beauty and durability make it ideal for fine detailing, and creating high-quality furniture pieces.

Civil Construction

Oak has been used for many years in the UK infrastructure, and little do we realise how often we may interact with the oak each day. Historically, oak was widely used for applications such as railway lines, bridges, sea defences, canal lock gates, retaining walls, fences, and gates, and even today, oak remains a preferred choice for these uses due to its structural integrity and enduring beauty.

Cladding

The beauty of oak, it’s attractive colouring and its durability, have made oak a popular choice for cladding for centuries. Oak is used in both traditional and contemporary style building projects, sometimes as the complete exterior surface and others as an architectural feature.

European Oak is a large, long-lived deciduous tree, widely distributed throughout Europe – from Northern Spain to Southern Scandinavia, and from Northern Ireland to Eastern Europe. All these nations fully endorse well-known forestry management schemes, including FSC® and PEFC.

A lesser-known fact is that the significance of oak as a key resource in France dates back to 1669, when King Louis XIV's finance minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, restructured the nation's forests. His policy prioritised planting high-quality oak to build a Navy strong enough to challenge the British. Today, a 32-acre grove of nearly 400-year-old oaks named after Colbert still exists.

This legacy was reinforced by Napoleon, who, in 1803, banned unauthorized tree felling. Two years later, he decreed that every felled oak must be over 150 years old and replaced with a new, premium oak.

Today, France boasts 34,000 square miles of oak forests (compared to just 4,000 in the UK) with an annual harvest of approximately 1,000,000 cubic metres per year. Additionally, vast oak resources can be found in the forests of Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and the Balkans, particularly Croatia.

Hewins has held FSC® and PEFC certification since 2006, and with strong trading relationships throughout France and other sustainably managed areas of Europe, we are committed to preserving this timeless natural resource.

Premium Grade

Fresh Sawn Oak

Premium Grade, as the name suggests, provides clear sections with limited natural features, ideal for projects where appearance is critical such as traditional frames and glazing applications. Sawn fresh from the log, giving a fine sawn finish, the timber will naturally shrink and fissure over time as it dries and settles in situ, weathering to a silver/grey colour.

■ Grade overview: A mix of 85% QPA and 15% QP1 approximately. Mostly clear sections with some smaller knots up to 33% of a face, allowance of sapwood up to 15% of a face and limited heart shaking. Some pieces of each batch are allowed to have larger knots, greater sapwood and other small defects.

Seasoned Oak Beams

Beams

Seasoned Oak

Ideal for applications where movement must be kept to a minimum, but the quality of joinery timber is not required; or where the sections required are too large for a joinery product (150mm+); or where a weathered/ aged look is desired. The beams are air dried in square sections for 1–3 years (on average) and can then be sawn to other sections as required. 75mm is the minimum thickness the beams can be sawn to whilst still maintaining structural soundness. These beams have a rustic appearance which needs to be taken into account when specifying this product.

■ Grade overview: Naturally seasoned. Contains knots, sap content and other features. Drying splits and shakes develop during the seasoning process and can be quite substantial, especially on larger sections. Providing the beam is structurally sound, these are not considered a defect. Seasoned beams are not recommended as suitable for joinery applications.

Where oak is being built into brick/block work, such as lintels, we recommend seasoned oak over fresh sawn as most of the natural shrinkage and movement has already occurred, significantly reducing the likelihood of the lintel shrinking or moving in situ.

Beams Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is a softwood which has excellent strength and durability characteristics, allowing it to be used in a wide range applications, including structural elements in timber frame buildings. The species originated from North America and is now grown widely throughout much of Europe due to its natural properties, fast growth, drought tolerance and resistance to pathogens. This sustainable timber, which can be sourced with certification, has attractive colouring, and finishes well with paints and stains.

Douglas Fir has similar strength properties to Oak and is approximately 35% lighter in weight. As a result it is used in many of the same applications as Oak beams as a cost-effective alternative.

The species has a warm tone, featuring pink-orange heartwood, contrasted by distinctive white sapwood. Over time, the heartwood slowly transforms to a burnt orange hue. This orange finish can be ‘limed’ using oil, wax or a wash to create a lighter timber finish. The grain finish of Douglas Fir is very straight which makes it suitable for timber finishes where a more uniform design finish is wanted.

Properties of Douglas Fir:

■ Strength: Douglas Fir has the highest strength rating of any softwood and is 30% stronger in bending and compression than European redwood. It also has a near-perfect weight-to-strength ratio and excellent tension parallel-to-grain.

■ Stability: Douglas Fir is dimensionally stable and resists warping and twisting, making it ideal for exposed beams and architectural features.

■ Workability: It is relatively easy to work with, whether for cutting, shaping, or finishing. This workability extends to both hand and machine tools.

■ Appearance: Douglas Fir has a straight grain pattern and a warm reddishbrown hue that can add natural beauty to outdoor spaces.

How does Douglas Fir compare to Oak?

■ Strength and Hardness: Oak, is significantly harder and more durable than Douglas Fir. This makes oak preferable for applications requiring extreme durability and wear resistance.

■ Cost: Douglas Fir is a more cost-effective choice when compared to Oak, which can be a decisive factor for budget-conscious projects.

■ Workability: While both woods are workable, Douglas Fir is easier to cut and shape. Oak’s density can make it more challenging to work with, often requiring specialised tools.

■ Aesthetic Versatility: Oak has a distinct, prominent grain and a variety of finishes, making it a preferred choice for high-end furniture and visible architectural features. Douglas Fir, with its straight grain and warm tones, is often chosen for a plainer, simpler look.

Structurally Graded Fresh Sawn / Air Dried Oak

Beams can be graded for their strength and load-bearing capacity by examining the straightness of their grain, and the position and size of knots and other features.

We can provide strength graded Fresh Sawn and Seasoned beams to British Standard 5756 strength classes. These are THB and THA for sections over 20,000mm² and TH1 and TH2 for sections under 20,000mm². In most sections and lengths, THB equates to D30 and, TH2 to D24. (D30 and D24 are European grades).

TH1 and THA are very demanding on the technical qualities of oak, and are difficult to achieve, so we would advise trying to work with THB and TH2 to avoid disappointment. It is important to note that seasoned beams can only be graded to THB or TH2.

Our in-house graders inspect each beam carefully and provide a certificate of the beam’s strength grade. As the beams are inspected for their structural strength, not their visual appearance, Fresh Sawn Structurally Graded beams may still contain knots and other features, and Seasoned Structurally Graded Beams may still have a rustic appearance that contains splits.

It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that trusses are suitable for the specific structural requirements of the project. Each type of oak truss requires structural calculations prior to manufacture.

Truss designs must be approved by a structural engineer, and a copy of the structural report seen before we can begin manufacture.

Gazebo Kits Fresh Sawn Oak

Transform outdoor spaces into stunning retreats with our Oak Gazebo Kits. Designed to create a sheltered space for relaxation or outdoor gatherings, these kits combine beauty and durability. Crafted from sustainably sourced First Grade Oak (p.28), each frame is precisely machined and incorporates classic joint designs for straightforward assembly on site, saving time and space in the workshop. The oak is planed to a smooth finish, offering the option to weather naturally to a distinguished silver/grey or to be oiled at installation for a warm, golden tone – that will require ongoing upkeep. Complete with oak dowel pegs, these kits allow for versatile finishing and cladding options, which our team can discuss to help you achieve your vision. For optimal results, we recommend having a qualified carpenter handle the construction. This approach saves considerable time and labor costs by eliminating the need for hand-cutting joints and double-handling materials on-site.

Feather Edge Fresh Sawn Oak

The clean lines of Feather Edge cladding combined with the distinctive grain of oak, add beauty and prestige to both period and modern properties alike - providing a very durable barrier against the elements. Carefully sawn to ensure a consistent thickness, the boards have a fine sawn finish and will shrink slightly as the timber naturally dries and settles in situ, weathering to a silver/grey colour, adding to the species rustic and natural appearance.

Softwood Cladding Profiles & species

Wooden cladding is becoming an increasingly popular choice for both residential and commercial buildings. The natural beauty of the material is undoubtedly a factor, but that’s not the only benefit of using this versatile product.

Whether your project is of a contemporary or traditional type, choosing to specify timber adds warmth and character, accentuating the aesthetic of any design. The natural origins of timber mean that each board comes with a subtly unique figuring and, depending on the species, different knot shapes and patterns.

Our range of softwood species can cater to any style requirement, and are available in a variety of standard profiles. We can also cater to bespoke profiles upon request.

Larch

Larch provides a good quality cladding at a good price. It is lively with knots and features and will naturally weather to an attractive silver/grey colour, more consistent than other species. This cladding will last for 20–30 years in average external conditions.

Douglas Fir

A durable wood that maintains its shape and appearance over time, even when exposed to changes in temperature and humidity. With a warm, rich colour and distinctive grain pattern, it adds texture and interest to a surface and is also resistant to decay, rot and insect infestations.

British Western Red Cedar

A more economical choice to its foreign cousin, boasting a more consistent, pale-red colour with varied grain and character for a more natural look. It is less dense and contains more knots than Canadian, but weathers more evenly and has a considerably lower carbon impact product due to it being locally grown.

Canadian Western Red Cedar

A very stable natural timber, having very little movement or cupping tendencies. This high quality timber is slowly grown, resulting in a very straight grain with very few knots. It comes in a whole range of colours, varying from orange hues right through to a reddish-brown, giving greater depth across boards and a clear, flawless finish.

Grooved/Reeded Decking

Air Dried Oak

Our Oak Decking boards are produced from naturally seasoned oak planks to produce stable, long lasting decking installations. The natural strength and durability of oak makes it an ideal timber for external uses such as decking, with drainage grooves providing an aesthetically pleasing look, and also assisting with channelling water away from the surface. The decking can be treated with a protective oil such as Owatrol Deks Olje D1, and over time will weather to an attractive silver/grey colour.

Fixing Tips

Correct methods of fixing oak decking are critical to both its look and its function. Check out our fixing tips on page 77.

üFixing Tips Oak Cladding & Decking

Cladding

■ Leave it to sit: Timber cladding should acclimatise on-site before installation (apart from Fresh Sawn – see below). Unwrap and store it in a dry, cool, wellventilated area. Spread boards on timber strips and cover loosely to minimise moisture exposure while ensuring airflow, reducing the risk of discoloration.

■ Or get it up quick: Fresh sawn oak naturally shrinks and moves as it dries. Once you receive the boarding, installation should follow within a few days. Before the install, ensure the boards are kept neatly stacked on even ground, and out of direct sunlight.

■ Fix it right & fix it tight: Cladding boards should be fixed approximately every 400mm. Air dried cladding should be installed with 2 fixings spaced towards each edge. Fresh Sawn Feather Edge and Weather Boards can be fixed by selecting the boards so that the heart is facing away from the building. Then place 1 fixing 10mm above the top of the board below. This method allows for shrinkage as the product dries out. Fresh sawn cladding can also be fixed with 2 fixings (like air dried cladding) - this holds the cladding flat, but does not allow for natural shrinkage to the same extent. The length of the fixings should be a minimum of 2.4 x the thickness of the cladding. You must use stainless steel fixings when fixing oak, otherwise the acidic tannin will react with normal steel, stain the timber and corrode the fixings. We recommend Carpenters Mate screws.

■ Mind the gap: Overlap is essential to allow for natural shrinkage and movement. Once sawn, the drying process starts - so by the time fixing of the boards takes place, the width may already have reduced slightly. Ensure you still allow the recommended overlap for further shrinkage after fitting. When installing air dried cladding such as Shiplap or TGV Boarding, it is important to leave a gap of at least 3mm to allow for the seasonal movement between each board. You can do this by putting a packer under the board as you fit it. Once fixed, remove the packer and place it on top, ready for the next board.

Decking

■ Stay on deck - Wooden decking is a popular product, but has a reputation of becoming slippery over time. This can be minimised by installing the decking with a slight fall on it, in line with the length of the boards. This improves the drainage and will cause rainwater to naturally run off the deck.

■ Fix it right - The length of fixings you use should penetrate into the support bearer by at least 30mm, and provide a good, strong fixing. You must use stainless steel screws when using oak, as otherwise the acidic tannin in the oak will react with the mild steel, stain the decking and corrode the fixings. We recommend Carpenters Mate screws which are made from marine grade stainless steel, and will provide a strong fixing.

■ Mind the gap - It is very important to install the decking boards with at least a 8mm gap between them. This will be wide enough to allow for the seasonal movement of the boards, and ensure that water can effectively drain away.

üFixing Tips Flooring

Solid & Engineered Flooring

■ Is the sub floor dry? Rising moisture from the ground has to be stopped from reaching the flooring, otherwise the flooring will swell up and the installation could fail. Check that the subfloor has a damp proof membrane in it, and that the floor is dry enough. You can do this by testing the floor for its relative humidity (RH). This must not exceed 70% RH. If you are in any doubt, we recommend that you install an extra DPM, using Marldon Rapid DPM MXS140. If you are installing on to joists with an air gap below, ensure that the void under the floor is ventilated.

■ Allowing for movement: Wooden flooring is a natural product - it swells when it absorbs moisture, and shrinks when it dries out. For example, during summer time (when we open more doors and windows) flooring tends to increase its moisture content and swell slightly. During winter (when we close the windows and put the heating on) wooden flooring will tend to shrink slightly.

You must leave a gap of 12–15mm all the way around the flooring to allow for expansion. This needs to be at all points - around pipes, architraves and doorways etc. This gap is normally hidden under skirting boards or a trim.

■ Fixing the flooring: When fixing the flooring to a concrete screed, we would recommend gluing the flooring with Marldon MXA200 Adhesive. This is a flexible adhesive that allows for the natural movement of the flooring, and can be stuck directly to the Marldon Rapid DPM MXS140.

When fixing flooring to joists, traditional nailing is acceptable. You can purchase very narrow flooring screws which also hold the flooring well.

When fixing the flooring over underfloor heating, it is essential that the heating pipes are held away from the flooring, or 75mm inside the screed. The flooring must never exceed 23°c at any point. Always turn the heating on / off gradually each year, as this gives the flooring time to adjust to the change.

■ Finishing the flooring: There are two main finishes for flooring: oil and lacquer. Both have different features:-

Oil – soaks into the wood and gives a natural finish. However, it does leave the grain slightly open, which can collect dirt in walkways etc. If it is scratched, it is very easy to repair - simply wipe in some more oil.

Lacquer – This forms a layer on top of the floor, and gives a clean finish. It fills up the grain so it doesn’t get dirt in the grain. However, if it is scratched, it can be difficult to repair.

Sawn To Size Superior Grade

For prestigious commissions and exceptional projects, where the finest quality of oak is required. Hewins Superior Grade is meticulously produced to the highest grading we can offer. During the production process, detailed attention is paid to the grade and grain of the oak and the result is superior quality, consistent sections of oak. This grade is often used in bespoke furniture commissions, yacht fitouts and unique internal projects, where only the best will do.

Clear clean sections with straight grain, minimal allowance of features and broadly consistent in colour. 85% of the sections will be knot free on 3–4 faces. Each piece is graded on its most affected 2 linear metres, ensuring that each piece is of very high overall quality. There is a restricted allowance for small knots of up to 12mm in diameter in some of the pieces, but these will be the exception. Isolated pin size knots of under 5mm diameter can be included if they are not a distinct visual contrast. There is no tolerance for splitting, dead knots or sap. Also known as a super prime grade.

For sections of 200mm or more in width, we would recommend assessing if these pieces need to be clean and clear on both faces. We offer a Superior Good One Face grade which could save money, timber and potential lead time with these wide sections. Enquire with the Sales Team for more information on this option if you feel this could be appropriate to your requirements.

Due to the nature of this grade, lead times on this product may be slightly longer than normal.

Prime Grade

PRIME

Hewins Prime Grade oak is the choice for high quality, clean and clear appearance joinery, furniture and fit out production. The majority of pieces are 3–4 sides clear, and mostly clean and free from knots with a tolerance for a few smaller, workable defects. This grade is our most popular grade and is widely used for many different applications requiring clean, strong and clear grade oak. The overall finish of a project will appear with a clean and defect free finish especially if the joinery application involves a proportion of hidden faces. Perfectly suited for use in doors, windows, stairs, plus many other high-end building applications.

Largely clear sections free of features and generally consistent in colour. Approximately 70% of the pieces supplied will be free of defects on 3–4 faces. Each piece is graded on its most affected 1.5 linear metres, this ensures high overall quality. There is a limited allowance for small knots of up to 30mm in diameter in some of the pieces, These are restricted and will be the exception. The occasional sound feature greater than 30mm diameter is permitted where there is the absence of a build-up of other features. There can be traces of sap on the arises of the sections with a view to this being removed in the planing process. This grade is sometimes referred to as A Grade / 1st Grade.

For sections of 200mm or more in width, we would recommend assessing if these pieces need to be clean and clear on both faces. We offer a Prime Good One Face grade which could save money, timber and potential lead time with these wide sections. Enquire with the Sales Team for more information on this option if you feel this could be appropriate to your requirements.

Sawn To Size Joinery Grade

Joinery grade is an attractive grade for applications where some features can be included or where shorter joinery and furniture components are being cut and therefore features can be easily cut around. This is a cost-effective grade for many applications and many of the pieces in an order will be clear of defects particularly where shorter lengths are requested. Joinery grade is not a Character or Pippy grade that is often sought after for flooring and furniture production because it is too clean and does not have the covering of attractive knots and catspaw pips that at true Pippy grade contains. Many of the pieces in Joinery grade will be mostly clean with maybe one or two features.

The majority of pieces will be mainly clear cuttings on 2–3 faces. Each piece is graded on its most affected 1.5 linear metres, this ensuring a consistent overall quality. There is a limited allowance for small knots of up to 35mm in diameter in each piece although many pieces will be fairly clean. The occasional sound feature greater than 30mm diameter is permitted where there is the absence of a build-up of other features. Smaller features of under 7mm are allowed without limitation so long as these features are not excessive in number. There can be traces of sap on the arises of the sections with a view to this being removed in the planing process. This is sometimes referred to as: Feature Grade and FAS (First And Second) grade.

For sections of 200mm or more in width, we would recommend assessing if these pieces need to be clean and clear on both faces. We offer a Joinery Good One Face grade which could save money, timber and potential lead time with these wide sections. Hewins Sawn To Size service is absolutely fantastic – it is quite remarkable how much time it saves. It has improved the useability 100% – no time wasted trying to interpret how the picker selected the timber, no wastage, no ripping of timber, and no defects!
