Oak. One of the world’s most beautiful and versatile materials.

From barrels to battleships, oak has graced many of the greatest moments and places in history.

Today, with man-made materials at large as never before, oak remains unique - one of the most durable, versatile and prestigious materials available, adding its own charm and status to any application.

European Oak (Quercus robur) is a large, long-lived deciduous tree, widely distributed throughout Europe: from Northern Spain to Southern Scandinavia, and from Northern Ireland to Eastern Europe.

The heartwood is dense and tight-grained, making it well suited to many building and joinery applications where strength and durability are important. Oak's durability is due to a high tannin content, providing a high level of resistance to insect and fungal attacks. With this excellent durability it can be used in many exposed exterior uses, as well as internally.

With its golden-brown colour and distictive grain pattern, the appearance of oak has been admired and esteemed for centuries. One very unique feature is the medullary rays: ribbons of cells running from the inside of the plant to the outside. This is particularly noticeable on timber faces that are cut at a parallel to the centre of the tree.

With strong trading relationships throughout France and other sustainably managed areas of Europe, we are committed to preserving this timeless natural resource.

Oak is a totally sustainable resource.

Forestry management schemes such as FSC® and PEFC are well established throughout Europe and beyond, ensuring that European Oak remains an entirely renewable resource.

For example, France established a controlled forest management system in 1827 and now has a staggering 524 million cubic metres of standing oak with an annual harvest of around 2.5 million cubic metres.

As a result of this foresight, some of the world's finest oak is sourced from French forests.

Hewins has held FSC® and PEFC certification since 2006.

Our values

Reliability

Accountability

Longevity

What do we value most at Hewins?

We took time out to consider it as a team. Simple and understandable, these values form the foundation of our company.

It’s about being REAL - that’s our culture. We are what we say we are, we do what we say we do.

The Hermitage

The Hermitage is a Grade II listed building at 42 Acres, a well-being retreat situated in Witham Friary, Somerset.

The team at AB Conduit Building LTD have been part of an ongoing programme over several years to transform the different areas on site into the wonderful sanctuary that it has become today, using large volumes of our oak in the process.

This multi-phase project included working on the original 15th century hunting lodge to transform it into a unique high-end hotel, The Hermitage, which includes hand-crafted bespoke joinery in each room, along with a stunning oak frame conservatory.

Case Study

Combining expert craftsmanship and an emphasis on using sustainable building methods, along with ensuring that conservation of the lodge was at the heart of the project, meant that refurbishment exceeded the clients’ expectations and is now enjoyed by many guests each year.

Duchy 35 Motor Launch Case Study

Cockwells design and custom-build superyacht tenders and motor yachts of the highest quality, creating the Duchy 35 specifically for cruising and relaxing in style.

This vessel has a spacious cockpit and expansive saloon, galley and shower compartment, beautifully showcasing the bespoke, interior joinery where our oak is used.

Oak is one of the most popular choices in the interior thanks to its rich and warm appearance. Prominent grain patterns add elegance and beauty to interior spaces, and its classic and timeless appeal complements almost every theme found on yachts.

Another reason for selecting oak is because of its exceptional strength and durability, meaning it can withstand the rigors of the marine environment, including the constant exposure to moisture, saltwater, and sunlight.

Cotswolds Garden Room

This oak garden room is a striking example of a bespoke design, with twin feature gables echoing the architecture of the original building, transforming the living space in this property and opening up panoramic views of the scenic local countryside.

David Salisbury liaised closely with the local Planning Officer, to ensure their design would complement the host property and remain in-keeping with the original building, whilst working closely with Hewins on the timber specification.

Case Study

The new bespoke structure is a substantial increase in size on the smaller lean-to conservatory it replaced, and now sits as a stunning garden room, rounded off with Cotswold Stone roof slates and large gable ends on two elevations.

The large glazed gables allow light to flood into the room and the full height glass panels taken all the way to the floor, provide outstanding views across the local area.

Premium Grade

Fresh Sawn Oak

Premium Grade, as the name suggests, provides clear sections with limited natural features, ideal for projects where appearance is critical such as traditional frames. Sawn fresh from the log, giving a fine sawn finish, the timber will naturally shrink and fissure over time as it dries and settles in situ, weathering to a silver/grey colour.

■ Grade overview - A mix of 85% QPA and 15% QP1 approximately. Mostly clear sections with some smaller knots up to 33% of a face, allowance of sapwood up to 15% of a face and limited heart shaking. Some pieces of each batch are allowed to have larger knots, greater sapwood and other small defects.

First Grade Fresh Sawn Oak

First Grade is our standard grade for use in general building, garage frames and other applications where varied natural features are desired or of no significance. Sawn fresh from the log, giving a fine sawn finish, the timber will naturally shrink and fissure over time as it dries and settles in situ, weathering to a silver/grey colour.

■ Grade overview - European grade QP1; largely clear sections with some tolerance of knots and other natural defects. Sapwood up to 15% of the face, and limited wane is permitted to the edges. Some heart trace is possible on two faces, and the occasional dead knot is allowed. Full grading rules are available on request.

Beams

Seasoned Oak

Ideal for applications where movement must be kept to a minimum, but the quality of joinery timber is not required - or where a weathered/aged look is desired. The beams are air dried in square sections for 1 to 3 years (on average) and can then be sawn to other sections as required. 75mm is the minimum thickness the beams can be sawn to whilst still maintaining structural soundness. These beams have a rustic appearance which needs to be taken into account when specifying this product.

■ Grade overview - Naturally seasoned. Contains knots, sap content and other features. Drying splits and shakes develop during the seasoning process and can be quite substantial, especially on larger sections. Providing the beam is structurally sound, these are not considered a defect. Seasoned beams are not recommended as suitable for joinery applications.

Standard Sections (mm)

Lengths available up to 8.50m. Beams are dried in square sections (see table above), but can also be resawn to almost any size over 100mm.

Structurally Graded Fresh Sawn / Air Dried Oak

Beams can be graded for their strength and load-bearing capacity by examining the straightness of their grain, and the position and size of knots and other features.

We can provide strength graded Fresh Sawn and Seasoned beams to British Standard 5756 strength classes. These are THB and THA for sections over 20,000mm² and TH1 and TH2 for sections under 20,000mm². In most sections and lengths, THB equates to D30 and, TH2 to D24. (D30 and D24 are European grades).

TH1 and THA are very demanding on the technical qualities of oak, and are difficult to achieve, so we would advise trying to work with THB and TH2 to avoid disappointment. It is important to note that seasoned beams can only be graded to THB or TH2.

Our in-house graders inspect each beam carefully and provide a certificate of the beam’s strength grade. As the beams are inspected for their structural strength, not their visual appearance, Fresh Sawn Structurally Graded beams may still contain knots and other features, and Seasoned Structurally Graded Beams may still have a rustic appearance that contains splits.

Lintels

Seasoned Oak

Suitable for internal or external use, where the genuine look and feel of a traditional oak beam is desired. Through the drying process, the beams develop splits across the surface and deeper shakes to the heart which give an aged look - perfectly suited to period properties. Each lintel is graded to TH2 structural grade to ensure that it is structurally sound. The lintel sections can be used for a variety of other purposes, such as mantelpieces, beams and ceiling joists.

■ Grade overview - Our Seasoned Lintels are structurally sound to TH2 grade, and may contain knots, sap and other natural features. Drying splits and shakes develop during the seasoning process and can be quite substantialespecially on larger sections. Provided the beam is structurally sound, these are not considered a defect.

Lintels... why seasoned?

Where oak is being built into brick/block work, we recommend seasoned oak over fresh sawn. Due to the seasoning process, most of the natural shrinkage and movement has already occurred, significantly reducing the likelihood of the lintel shrinking or moving in situ.

Gateposts Fresh Sawn Oak

Adding style and grandeur to any entryway, our Fresh Sawn Oak Gateposts are available with either a 2 or 4 way weathertop or rounded top. Sawn fresh from the log with a fine sawn finish, the timber will naturally shrink and fissures develop over time as it dries and settles in situ, weathering to a silver/grey colour.

■ Grade overview - European grade QPA. The sections in this grade will have predominantly sharp arrises. Sap will be minimal, up to 15% of a face and sound knots will be under 50% of the width. A more detailed grade overview is available on request.

Trusses Fresh Sawn Oak

Hewins Oak trusses are produced to your bespoke dimensions and designs. Each truss is supplied as a kit of components ready to be assembled on site and lifted into position. Each truss design needs to be designed by a certified structural engineer to ensure that the sections of oak used are appropriately sizes for the weight the truss will carry. We can assist with contacting structural engineers and getting trusses designed and specified.

Our trusses are made with European Oak and come with mortise and tenon joints predrilled to take supplied oak dowels. They are available in a planed or sawn finish. Trusses are supplied ready to assemble and simply require slotting together and the dowels inserting on site.

Structurally sound?

It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that trusses are suitable for the specific structural requirements of the project. Each type of oak truss requires structural calculations prior to manufacture, which can be sourced by the customer or arranged through Hewins.

Truss designs must be approved by a structural engineer, and a copy of the structural report seen before we can begin manufacture.

Gazebo Kits Fresh Sawn Oak

Hewins Oak Gazebo Kits provide a simple way of adding the status and appeal of a genuine oak frame to your home. Sawn from sustainably grown First Grade oak (p.28), the frame members are carefully machined and fully prepared for assembly, incorporating classic joint designs and features. Planed to a smooth finish, the frame can be left untreated and will weather naturally to a silver/grey, or can be oiled at the time of install to maintain the classic golden tone, though this will require regular upkeep. Oak dowel pegs are included in the kit. Our team will be glad to go over the options with you and discuss how you intend to clad and finish the frame. We recommend an experienced carpenter erects the frame.

With a smooth planed profile, our Shiplap Cladding creates a sharp yet subtle look wherever it is applied. Carefully machined from well-seasoned stock to maximise stability and consistency, our Shiplap Cladding also boasts a unique profile to allow for seasonal movement. If left untreated, the timber will weather to a silver/grey colour. There are a number of finishes available to preserve the original colouring which are effective, so long as they are maintained.

Softwood Cladding Profiles & species

Wooden cladding is becoming an increasingly popular choice for both residential and commercial buildings. The natural beauty of the material is undoubtedly a factor, but that’s not the only benefit of using this versatile product.

Whether your project is of a contemporary or traditional type, choosing to specify timber adds warmth and character, accentuating the aesthetic of any design. The natural origins of timber mean that each board comes with a subtly unique figuring and, depending on the species, different knot shapes and patterns.

Our range of softwood species can cater to any style requirement, and are available in a variety of standard profiles, as well as any bespoke profile up to 300mm wide.

British Larch

British Larch provides a good quality cladding at a good price. It is lively with knots and features and will naturally weather to an attractive silver/grey colour, more consistent than other species. This cladding will last for 20–30 years in average external conditions.

Canadian Western Red Cedar

A very stable natural timber, having very little movement or cupping tendencies. This high quality timber is slowly grown, resulting in a very straight grain with very few knots. It comes in a whole range of colours, varying from orange hues right through to a reddish-brown, giving greater depth across boards and a clear, flawless finish.

British Western Red Cedar

A more economical choice to its foreign cousin, boasting a more consistent, pale-red colour with varied grain and character for a more natural look. It is less dense and contains more knots than Canadian, but weathers more evenly and has a considerably lower carbon impact product due to it being locally grown.

Douglas Fir

A stable wood that maintains its shape and appearance over time, even when exposed to changes in temperature and humidity. With a warm, rich colour and distinctive grain pattern, it adds texture and interest to a surface and is also resistant to decay, rot and insect infestations.

Sweet Chestnut

Sweet Chestnut resembles Oak in appearance, but tends to offer greater stability and is lighter in weight. Durable and hard-wearing, it provides a beautiful finish, adding character and charm to any project. The golden color is similar to oak, but the grain is more pronounced, occasionally accompanied by darker mineral streaks.

Grooved/Reeded Decking

Air Dried Oak

Hewins Oak Decking boards are produced from naturally seasoned oak planks to produce stable, long lasting decking installations. The natural strength and durability of oak makes it an ideal timber for external uses such as decking, with drainage grooves providing an aesthetically pleasing look, and also assisting with channelling water away from the surface. The decking can be treated with a protective oil such as Owatrol Deks Olje D1 (p. 133), and over time will weather to an attractive silver/grey colour.

Fixing Tips

Correct methods of fixing oak decking are critical to both its look and its function. Check out our fixing tips on p. 73.

üFixing Tips Oak Cladding & Decking

Cladding

■ Get it up quick - Fresh sawn oak naturally shrinks and moves as it dries. Once you receive the boarding, installation should follow within a few days. Before the install, ensure the boards are kept neatly stacked on even ground, and out of direct sunlight.

■ Fix it right & fix it tight - Cladding boards should be fixed approximately every 400mm. Air dried cladding should be installed with 2 fixings spaced towards each edge. Fresh sawn Feather Edge and Weather Boards can be fixed by selecting the boards so that the heart is facing away from the building. Then place 1 fixing 10mm above the top of the board below. This method allows for shrinkage as the product dries out. Fresh sawn cladding can also be fixed with 2 fixings (like air dried cladding) - this holds the cladding flat, but does not allow for natural shrinkage to the same extent. The length of the fixings you use should be a minimum of 2.4 x the thickness of the cladding. You must use stainless steel fixings when fixing oak, otherwise the acidic tannin will react with normal steel, stain the timber and corrode the fixings. We recommend Carpenters Mate screws (p. 127).

■ Mind the gap - Overlap is essential to allow for natural shrinkage and movement. Once sawn, the drying process starts - so by the time fixing of the boards takes place, the width may already have reduced slightly. Ensure you still allow the recommended overlap for further shrinkage after fitting. When installing air dried cladding such as Shiplap or TGV Boarding, it is important to leave a gap of at least 3mm to allow for the seasonal movement between each board. You can do this by putting a packer under the board as you fit it. Once fixed, remove the packer and place it on top, ready for the next board.

Decking

■ Stay on deck - Wooden decking is a popular product, but has a reputation of becoming slippery over time. This can be minimised by installing the decking with a slight fall on it, in line with the length of the boards. This improves the drainage and will cause rainwater to naturally run off the deck.

■ Fix it right - The length of fixings you use should penetrate into the support bearer by at least 30mm, and provide a good, strong fixing. You must use stainless steel screws when using oak, as otherwise the acidic tannin in the oak will react with the mild steel, stain the decking and corrode the fixings. We recommend Carpenters Mate screws (p. 127), which are made from marine grade stainless steel, and will provide a strong fixing.

■ Mind the gap - It is very important to install the decking boards with at least a 9mm gap between them. This will be wide enough to allow for the seasonal movement of the boards, and ensure that water can effectively drain away.

üFixing Tips Flooring

Solid & Engineered Flooring

■ Is the sub floor dry? - Rising moisture from the ground has to be stopped from reaching the flooring, otherwise the flooring will swell up and the installation could fail. Check that the subfloor has a damp proof membrane in it, and that the floor is dry enough. You can do this by testing the floor for its relative humidity (RH). This must not exceed 70% RH. If you are in any doubt, we recommend that you install an extra DPM, using Marldon Rapid DPM MXS140 (p. 152). If you are installing on to joists with an air gap below, ensure that the void under the floor is ventilated.

■ Allowing for movement - Wooden flooring is a natural product - it swells when it absorbs moisture, and shrinks when it dries out. For example, during summer time (when we open more doors and windows) flooring tends to increase its moisture content and swell slightly. During winter (when we close the windows and put the heating on) wooden flooring will tend to shrink slightly.

You must leave a gap of 12-15mm all the way around the flooring to allow for expansion. This needs to be at all points - around pipes, architraves and doorways etc. This gap is normally hidden under skirting boards or a trim.

■ Fixing the flooring - When fixing the flooring to a concrete screed, we would recommend gluing the flooring with Marldon MXA200 Adhesive (p. 130). This is a flexible adhesive that allows for the natural movement of the flooring, and can be stuck directly to the Marldon Rapid DPM MXS140 (p. 152).

When fixing flooring to joists, traditional nailing is acceptable. You can purchase very narrow flooring screws which also hold the flooring well.

When fixing the flooring over underfloor heating, it is essential that the heating pipes are held away from the flooring, or 75mm inside the screed. The flooring must never exceed 23°c at any point. Always turn the heating on / off gradually each year, as this gives the flooring time to adjust to the change.

■ Finishing the flooring - There are two main finishes for flooring: oil and lacquer. Both have different features:-

Oil – soaks into the wood and gives a natural finish. However, it does leave the grain slightly open, which can collect dirt in walkways etc. If it is scratched, it is very easy to repair - simply wipe in some more oil.

Lacquer – This forms a layer on top of the floor, and gives a clean finish. It fills up the grain so it doesn’t get dirt in the grain. However, if it is scratched, it can be difficult to repair.

Osmo

UV Protection Oil

A very popular oil for joinery and other exterior uses. Likened to putting sun cream onto timber, it is designed to protect the timber from UV - therefore limiting the silvering effect caused by direct sunlight. Produced from natural oils in a clear satin-matt finish, it is micro-porous and does not crack, flake, peel or blister. This product can be used on fresh sawn oak to maintain the original golden colour, providing it is used correctly and regularly re-coated.

Owatrol Deks Olje

D1 Saturating Oil

Deks Olje D1 is a saturating wood oil which drives out any moisture and air present in the wood and fills the pores. It will enrich and stabilise the Oak to provide long lasting protection in internal & external applications. Deks Olje D1 does not form a film on the timber but protects it from within and so it will not peel or crack but gives a clear matt finish and is easy to maintain. It is designed for use on yachts, even below the waterline.

PureKleen Surface Cleaner

PureKleen is a high-performance renovating cleaner used to remove organic and microbiological growth contaminants from porous surfaces without the need for excessive scrubbing or pressure wash. Supplied in a light gel, it is designed to both clean and provide ongoing protection from moss, lichen and algae, and does not contain solvents, acids or caustic soda so is very environmentally friendly. We offer 2 variations of PureKleen as below.

PureKleen-BG - designed for hard ground surfaces such as natural stone, cement, tarmac, brick, terracotta etc. It is ideal for cleaning ground hardscapes before or after fixing oak cladding/features and is also very effective in removing tannin stains from paved areas and such like.

PureKleen-BF - formulated to treat timber surfaces, restoring them to close to their original colour. We recommend once the timber surfaces have been treated they are then sealed with Purewood to maximise protection and preserve the colour.

PureWood Protective Finish

PureWood is a high performance, water based and solvent free wood protection solution for use on all types of both untreated and restored timber, including teak, pine, oak and exotic hardwoods. Its exceptional resistance to all weather conditions, including UV radiation makes it ideal for external applications such as cladding, decking, gates and garden furniture. It is also suitable for interior wood surfaces, protecting against stains and making them easier to clean. Composed of a resin blend using the foremost nanotechnology. Rather than a film forming coating, this is a protection and decoration product, penetrating the surface fibres rendering them water repellent and stain resistant, without affecting surface texture or aesthetics.
