OCTOBER | Marin Academy’s Theater Program presents the Fall Theater Production of “Metamorphoses” by Mary Zimmerman.

This play by Mary Zimmerman is based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses written in 8 A.D. and other, contemporary writings, including the poems of Rainer Maria Rilke. First produced in 1996, the play was a hit on Broadway and Zimmerman won a Tony award for her direction. The play intertwines a number of Greek myths that focus on the theme of love and transformation. The play is, by turns, humorous and poignant and features an ensemble of actors in multiple roles. Runs October 31 through November 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

I

t’s true that Marin Academy has a long tradition of striving to be an inclusive school, a school in which students and adults work together to create a truly multicultural community. I am so proud to be part of a school that lives this everyday, from a dedicated faculty that teaches and values the multiplicity of perspectives to students who do much to further the goals of inclusivity and accessibility on a daily basis.

Equity and inclusion are historic values of our school. Prioritizing these compelling issues, developing our values as a school, and living

MARIN ACADEMY

our mission provide us with ongoing opportunities and challenges to continue building and making our programs stronger, and reaffirm our commitment to inspire and foster a purposefully diverse, equitable and just community. Marin Academy is not the first to do this work, but we keep thinking, questioning, and creating initiatives to push the work forward. And, special programs such as Conference On Democracy, Brizendine Scholars, and LitFest reinforce the idea that many voices are welcomed at MA, even when those voices may clash with our own viewpoints.

In the following pages, you’ll read more about MA’s DEI work as we reconnect with Brighid Dwyer ‘97 and learn about her participation in the early Multicultural Learning Program, which provided a strong foundation for MA’s future work. For Brighid, it shaped and contributed to her role at Princeton University. In addition, you’ll meet our Dean of Equity and Inclusion, Mya Sullivan, who is helping to move our DEI work forward in alignment with MA’s Strategic Plan; understand,

from their own words, some of the transformative journeys students experience from their involvement with our Identity and Equity Groups; and much more. You’ll also catch up with MA alumni in Class Notes and celebrate the generosity of our wonderful community in the Annual Report section.

This fall we debut our new Transdisciplinary Leadership Program with the class: Culture Shock: Migrations, Exile, and the Refugee Crisis and welcome our first MA Promise scholars. These two initiatives further our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and keep MA at the forefront of progressive education. I am thrilled! I hope you enjoy reading all of the stories in this edition of NEXUS as much as we’ve enjoyed bringing them to you.

H

aving completed its twelfth year and two full departmental rotations, the Brizendine Scholars Program has become an established MA tradition that enhances both student and faculty learning. For 2018-19, the program brought a total of 14 experts to campus.

In the fall, the science department, led by Department Chair Ellie Beyers, sponsored an all-school event entitled, “Art of Scientific Communication.” The series of workshops explored different ways in which scientists communicate effectively through different mediums.

These included: i Rogelio Bernal Andreo, an astrophotographer, on images; i Tyler Dewitt, YouTube/TED Talk guru, on video communication;

offered specific methodologies for ameliorating the inherent bias, privilege, and motivational limitations of them. In the afternoon, Feldman worked just with the science department, focusing specifically on homework issues and grading.

The science department shared the 2018-19 program with the visual arts department, which brought six guest artists to campus for classroom-based workshops with students. Former MA faculty member and current UC-Santa Cruz professor Lewis Watts headlined the work with students. The founder of the photography program at MA, Watts came full circle as he worked with students in Josh Smith’s photography classes. Watts also spoke at an assembly and presented the student body with examples of his work in Paris, New Orleans, Cuba and other

parts of the world. Later in the year, noted ceramicist Adrian Arleo visited for two days, while Hwie Li Tsao-Pupo taught a master class in Chinese brush painting, Eric Zachary Whitten taught a master class in landscape painting, and Jan Blythe worked with the ThreeDimensional Thinking students with mixed media. Michael Gillette also came to campus and exposed students to the world of illustration.

Finally, Brizendine funds also helped bring Dr. Millery Polyné of New York University’s interdisciplinary Gallatin School to MA to help sophomores deepen their appreciation for the complexities in Haiti as part of the sophomore End-of-Year Project.

Polyné’s work helped enrich student understanding of Haiti’s history, culture, and promise for the future.

In June, the science department invited Joe Feldman of the Crescendo Education Group to campus to conduct an all-day professional development workshop about how to change teachers’ grading practices with an eye for greater equity. HEADMASTER’S CUP For the first time in MA history, the faculty has decided to award this cup to two extraordinary individuals whose contributions couldn’t be measured against each other. Travis Brownley, on behalf of the faculty, awarded Kenyamarie Mahone and Ainsley Walker the Headmaster’s Cup, an award established by Board of Trustees President James Thacher to honor the values of MA inspired by the school’s first headmaster, Bill McCluskey. Kenyamarie Mahone is a tenacious leader, an engaged member of our community, a scholarathlete, and an advocate for MA whose work ethic and compassion speak to our core values. Ainsley Walker is a powerful dancer and artist who brings her voice to the stage. She is thoughtful, candid and honest.

She asks great questions, and she is a courageous and graceful leader who is willing to put things out there and to reflect on her decisions.

ZUMBRUN AWARD In memory of Danielle Plumb Zumbrun ‘79 and in recognition of her keen appreciation of nature and her sense of responsibility as a caretaker of the earth, the Zumbrun Award recognizes outstanding student leadership in the Outings Program. A staple of the outings department for the entirety of her four years at MA, Sophie Schneider’s love for the natural world pours out of her, and her welcoming, open leadership style invites others to encounter the wilderness with ease and confidence. Whether meeting with the mindfulness group in the garden, leading outings on the coast, or building bridges for Crossroads students to participate in the outings program, Sophie leans into her passion for the created world every day, and invites others to do the same.

O

ne of the terrific perks of being a long-time MA faculty member is the opportunity to stay in touch with so many wonderful MA alumni and bear witness to their dynamic lives and accomplishments.

One such alumna is Brighid Dwyer ‘97, who now serves as the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at Princeton University. When Brighid discovered that an upcoming issue of Nexus had chosen “diversity, equity, and inclusion” for its theme, she was eager to speak with me via Zoom about her experience at MA, and to share her excitement about her current role at Princeton.

Brighid reflected on her first experiences at MA with great fondness, vividly recalling several details, like the special shoes that she wore to her initial interview at the school - “multicolored Converse” - and remembering her welcoming first practice with the MA swim team, all part of an exciting start to her highly successful 4 years as an

MA student-athlete. “Don Alexander [MA science teacher and swim coach] was a really important encouraging influence throughout my time at MA, as were several other MA teachers,” recalls Brighid. It was gratifying to also hear Brighid express appreciation for her invitation to a modest pioneering program for incoming freshmen, MA’s Multicultural Leadership Program (MLP), one that I co-directed while in my former role as Freshmen Dean. We began the MLP in 1993 as a 3-week summer program, designing it to be part of our school’s wider effort for our community to embrace cultural pluralism. With very few non-white students enrolled in the school at the time, the program emerged from conversations with MA parents and students of color who emphasized the need for non-white students to feel like they belonged in the school, to have a group of friends, and to feel connected to the support systems that were available. Until that time, MA was challenged with a high attrition rate for students of color.

Brighid was a member of the inaugural group of 15 students in the MLP, 12 of whom comprised the entire number of incoming students of color enrolled for the fall of ‘93. We intentionally invited this diverse group to our campus for an opportunity that summer to maximize their chances for academic success, to set the stage for fuller involvement in the life of the school, and to help populate a shift toward a culture of greater equity and inclusion.

We employed older MA students of color as teacher assistants to help lead seminars in history, science & math, and English & writing. In addition, the MLP offered forums for discussing crosscultural issues both at MA and in the world at large. The new students also became familiar with the multiple ways in which leadership roles were available to them beyond the classroom, including opportunities in the arts,

athletics, outings, clubs, and student senate. “I remember that we met in Thacher Hall, the ‘new’ science building at the time,” Brighid shared with me. “I was really excited about meeting folks I would go to high school with. It was a big adventure taking the van across the bridge from Oakland each day, and it was a lot of fun. Not only did I enjoy the academic component—being challenged—but I felt supported in having conversations about identity.”

The fact that the MLP included white students from Marin made a difference for Brighid. “I recall a sense that we were really learning from one another, that we were all learning together.

Folks of color could say to the white students, ‘This is MA, this is who we are. Everyone is valued, and we can all learn from one another.’” Brighid also emphasized the importance of MLP participants continuing to meet formally as a group during the actual school year, providing ongoing support for one another. “For me, those meetings helped to dispel the impostor syndrome, the feeling that ‘maybe I just don’t belong here.’”

Another factor for Brighid’s successful MA experience was the school’s hiring of Kim Shaner, an African-American English teacher who also advised MA’s Multicultural Activity Group.

“I remember thinking Kim was so cool; a New Yorker who moved to San Francisco and taught at MA. I remember thinking she was the first teacher I had who looked like me.

I had other Black teachers, but she was younger and talked to me like I was a mature teen who could handle discussing the honest realities of life.”

Brighid’s current work has inspired a keen interest in the development of inclusive curriculum in higher education, and in this context, she had a lot of positive things to say about her experiences in the MA classroom. “As I have developed syllabi for classes that

I have taught, I have often reflected back on my experience in high school.

And as I look at some of the books that are currently on my shelf, they include Bless Me, Ultima and Their Eyes Were Watching God, I realize they are books that I read while at MA. I remember learning about Hinduism in history class. These are significant memories that I have. At the time, as part of growing up in the Bay Area, and because it was part of MA’s ethos, it didn’t strike me as odd or unusual. It struck me that, ‘This is the canon. This is what everybody learns.’ In reflecting back, I think my high school did a very good job in exposing me to a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

It felt like water; it didn’t feel like anything unusual. As I see some of the other curricula that current students are working with, it’s something that stands out. It really helped build my perspective from an early age and I am really thankful for all of that.”

Every student of color in Brighid’s 9th grade class returned to MA the following year, academically successful, with many taking on leadership roles. Several ran for student senate, and one was elected (that would be Brighid); one was student co-chair for a captivating AIDS-awareness assembly; two made significant contributions to the school’s music program; and one became eligible as a high school All-American swimmer (that would also be Brighid). Years later, two others, Paul Simpson and Dawud Lankford, served as MA Trustees. The successful experiences of Brighid and her classmates proved to be a turning point in MA’s path toward greater diversity, equity, and inclusion. For the fall of 1994, the number of incoming students of color increased from 12 to17, and we continued to increase our geographic diversity, attracting more students from outside of Marin. As we know, diversity extends far beyond color and

geography, and numbers themselves do not make for a more equitable and inclusive school culture. But we were heading in a positive direction.

In Brighid’s words, “It was great to see that our class was so successful, even in our first year at MA. I think the school helped to create a support network, not just for the kids, but also for our families. MA had a lot of foresight in this area, which I think speaks to why I was drawn to it.”

Fast-forwarding to Brighid’s current role at Princeton University, she was effusive in describing the positive efforts and wide-ranging opportunities within the university to promote equity and inclusion there. “My current job is within Student Affairs. I support the work of the folks who are in the LGBT Center, The Fields Center for Equality & Cultural Understanding, and the Women’s Center. I work with the staff in those centers to help them develop their work and to think

about the collaborative opportunities between the centers and other units on campus. For example, collaboration with the Office of Disability Services and the Davis International Center provides an opportunity to think about intersectional identities such as Latinx and ability identities, or international and queer identities.”

“My job includes supporting staff and helping them create curricula, and it’s also supporting everybody within the Division of Campus Life—helping them be really intentional in their diversity and inclusion efforts. This includes Athletics, Career Services, the Office of Religious Life, University Health Services, and others. We have a wide array of units that have different goals and ways in which they operate. So, if we take the example of a practitioner in the health center having someone who comes in needing medical services, let’s say with the flu, how do you respond to that person if they are

gender non-conforming, especially if that is a population that you are not used to working with? How can we be welcoming and inclusive of folks with a wide variety of identities?”

When I asked Brighid about some of the tools she employs in facilitating conversations exploring equity and inclusion, she identified setting up conditions to have open and honest dialogue. “We need to talk to one another and listen fully in ways that we realize how our own humanity is tied to the well-being of others. This changes the conversation and it changes how we respond to one another.”

Toward the end of our talk, I couldn’t help but think about the enormous degree to which the landscape of diversity, equity, and inclusion has expanded in the last 25 years, becoming more aware of its multifaceted complexity in my own personal perspective here at MA, and for Brighid during her journey from MA to Princeton. Even so, Brighid shared a caveat. “I think we are still in a place where a lot of people equate diversity with race. To be sure, there are still a lot of conversations about race that need to happen. And clearly there’s a lot of colorism, and a lot of literal racism, and people are being killed because of the color of their skin. But I think giving voice within the context of diversity to other identities is essential, and that when we do talk about race, it doesn’t become the ‘Black-White paradigm.’ Since moving from the West Coast, I feel this paradigm is much more prevalent on the East Coast.

In California, there were many more conversations about Asian identity, Latinx identity, and even sometimes Native identity. There is a lot of hurt and a lot of value in experiences we are not hearing when we aren’t able to provide space for folks of other racial identities. And I think the same is true

beyond race.”

Brighid shared that she considers “ability” as the next frontier in the arena of equity and inclusion, both for higher education and for independent schools. “A lot more students are coming to elite schools with health concerns, different kinds of illnesses, and a range of physical and learning abilities, and I don’t think a lot of institutions are equipped to be there for these folks. I think there is a desire to include these folks, and to have the resources to serve them, but we have a lot of work to do.” When I commented to Brighid that her job seems so meaningful and rich, she responded wholeheartedly. “Yes, the work is very rewarding, and it’s really exciting. It’s great to be in a place with so many resources, and I think Princeton has done a great job in deploying its resources in really meaningful ways.”

At the very end of our talk, as I thanked her, Brighid once again expressed deep gratitude for her time at MA. “I really feel MA helped shape me into the person I am, and I say that with a full heart and so much thanks and joy.”

And, she then extended a very enticing invitation: “Send MA students our way!

We would love to have them—I’d love to give them a tour!”

ya Sullivan has spent a long time doing diversity work in independent schools, as well as in corporate and non-profit settings. If you spend any time in conversation with her, you’ll discover that she’s deeply knowledgeable and passionate about creating equitable learning environments that are intentional, dynamic, and sustainable. Before Mya came to MA, however, she actually wanted to step away from doing diversity work.

Originally from Cleveland, OH, Mya has spent a considerable amount of time in independent schools, in both teaching and administrative capacities.

education and an M.A. in American History and Government, she is able to handle multiple disciplines of education and curriculum design.

She spent years at The Laurel School in Ohio in the roles of Director of Equity and Inclusion and the Chair for Learning Enhancement. She also taught eighth grade history and served as the Assistant Director of Middle School at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Georgia. At MA, she is a member of the mathematics department as well as our new Dean of Equity and Inclusion. Mya brings a great deal of expertise in diversity work to MA, but with a particular focus on making links between diversity matters and curriculum design.

“The interesting part of the story is, before I applied for this position, I’d said no more diversity work for me,” laughs Mya. “Then I read the job description and learned about MA’s long, long history with this work and what I realized was, they’re ready for the next level. They’re really ready to take this whole idea of equity and inclusion work in schools a step further.”

socioeconomic status, geography, and gender to create an inclusive education with equity, access, and cultural fluency at its core. By encouraging and inspiring critical thinking, creativity, and empathy, diversity empowers students to learn and lead in a globally interconnected world. And the kind of compassion that comes from experiencing diverse perspectives is essential for developing highly effective leaders.

Mya is supporting the work of our Identity and Equity Groups as well, continuing the amazingly impactful work that Dean of Multicultural Life, Sanjai Moses, had been doing for the last fifteen years. In a recent conversation with Mya, she spoke fervently about some of the principles

that are helping guide her through this work and some of the questions she’s tackling. “How do we serve all of our students from an equity inclusion standpoint? How do we make sure that not only are we preparing people to walk through those doors of opportunity when they open, if they haven’t had access to them before, but how are we ensuring that the folks on the other side of the door are ready to open it? What are we going to do to make sure that they have the tools to be able to create opportunities for other people?” Working on these issues is “why I was most excited!” she exclaims.

On this topic of Why she does this work, Mya explains that it’s because it’s grounded so much in her own personal

experience as a woman of color, and having had limited opportunities but learning to overcome in those situations. “What I have found is, those experiences gave me opportunities to practice being resilient, gave me opportunities to really practice how to adapt in situations that were unfamiliar, gave me a lot of practice in how to seize the most of opportunities, even in context that perhaps weren’t set up for me.”

And so, for Mya, her Why is about ensuring that every member of the MA community has the same chance to practice those things, “because ultimately,” she says, “that’s what leads to success!”

he Identity and Equity Groups at MA are designed to empower students to lead discussions about identity factors and how they shape our community here at school and beyond. Student leaders are trained in facilitation, leadership, and social justice, and are supported by an adult in the community who helps students hone the skills to engage in difficult conversations that respect everyone’s perspectives, to speak their truths, and ask the hard questions. Current and former student leaders share with us some of their direct experiences and

personal journeys, and how being a part of MA’s IDEQ community helped them develop an appreciation of their own identities and advocacy for diversity of ideas.

LAURA C. ‘20: Since leading MA’s Asian Student Organization, I have come to embrace and value diversity of thought. Being able to lead an Identity and Equity group at Marin Academy, I have been able to observe one of the only aspects of school where students are both the leaders and the participants. Learning through others’ experiences, both similar and

different to mine, has allowed me to create a community within Marin Academy in which I am comfortable being vulnerable. Both ASO and the IDEQ groups have become spaces in which I can also share my perspective and feel both heard, understood, and questioned. Others push me to solidify my beliefs as well as confirm my own understanding of the thoughts and opinions I hold. This complexity and solidification of my own beliefs has been a result of the discussions that I have been a part of within the DEI department at Marin Academy.

people to see about us, and those we wish to hide. During the latter part of this activity I realized, as men of color, we all hide certain things from others ranging from our situations at home, personality traits we dislike, and more.

I also realized that there was a space on campus to feel heard and talk about what we usually conceal about ourselves, or our lives. After this first meeting was over, I was keen for the next one.

As a result of the tight knit community within the group, I have become very close with my co-leader, Jeff P. ’20, and the adults in attendance in a way that I know I can rely on them if I need anything. For all these reasons, I’m committed to the Young Brothers group as it continues to foster a safe place for men of color on campus.

EDER R. ‘21: When I was applying to MA, I was really intrigued by the Young Men of Color group (now Young Brothers group) because of the safe space it offered to the self-identifying men of color on campus. The concept of safe spaces, much like affinity groups, was new to me and I did not initially see their importance. Now, I see how the Young Brothers group helps reduce the sense of feeling different, or not belonging, that men of color face by providing an environment in which to discuss issues surrounding their identities. Surely enough, this is what occurred at my first meeting.

Before coming to MA, I saw staff and faculty members as people who are solely at school to talk about education but the Young Brothers group, and other MA programs, have shown them to be more than that; staff and faculty members are here to support, learn from us students, teach meaningful curricula, and a myriad more reasons.

The Young Brothers group has given me and the attendees a place where we are able to discuss any subject without discouragement, no matter who it may involve. I believe it is important to have these spaces in order for staff to hear what we have to say and share our true thoughts on important matters that are not talked about or are discouraged from talking about at school.

ZUZU O. ‘20: Transitioning into high school after going through a process of coming out in middle school was daunting. It had been a difficult and grueling task that I did not want to repeat. So, for my freshman year of high school, I went back into the closet, which fed a deep and insidious insecurity I had about my sexuality and the way I was viewed because of it. It felt as though all the progress I’d made in the direction of self-acceptance had been stunted, if not reversed entirely. As a teenager, I sought community, membership, and a feeling of acceptance, and my queerness did not seem advantageous in my pursuit to achieve those things. It was going to Queer Affinity, and finding a place and community there that made me realize that my being gay did not have to impede my ability to have wonderful and fulfilling friendships. It gave me a space to recognize my struggles, and not only to recognize them but to be in a space where I could find commonality with others and from that

realize that maybe life won’t be so tough, and one facet of my identity doesn’t have to impact my future.

For me, I really wanted to provide representation for gay men. Society often fetishizes queer women and stigmatizes queer men. I wanted to lead GSA because I knew I could show people that being a gay guy really doesn’t make a difference, people can be happy and gay. I mean, gay does mean happy.

forge bonds and connections. It was Queer Affinity that led me to come out to my parents and soon to the whole school. When the opportunity arose at the end of freshman year to become a leader of Queer Affinity, it seemed like an obvious choice. I wanted nothing more than to provide a space for young people who felt out of place or without community to come and feel embraced, perhaps for the first time, as exactly who they are. Leading Queer Affinity gave me that chance, as well as a chance to pay it forward for all that the club had given me.

KYLE T. ‘20: When I first came to MA I knew that I was gay. I had this vision that all of a sudden I would be surrounded by a bunch of kids who all thought, acted, and felt like me. However, the reality was a little different. I am, at the time, the only out male senior. My freshman year, I remember looking around the halls and feeling kind of alone. Not lonely, I connected with plenty of amazing people, but more alone in the sense that there was this big piece of my identity that others just couldn’t relate to. I felt disconnected. GSA (Gender and Sexuality Awareness) was an opportunity for me to show others that they weren’t alone. What I liked about GSA was that anyone can go to meetings regardless of their gender and sexuality. It is a place where people can be informed and find companionship and understanding without the risk of having to confirm their identity. That’s what drew me to GSA, I wanted to offer that support to people who felt or were feeling like I once did and sometimes still do.

KENYAMARIE M. ‘19: Leading GROW (Global Role of Women) has taught me a lot about community and activism and facilitation. Leading a club and creating dialogues has really helped me become a better facilitator and leader in all facets of my life. I’ve learned that as people share, to really listen, instead of focusing on the specific facilitation skills I want to use in my response. I’ve also learned that club meetings are just a small part of being in IDEQ. In GROW, we hold club meetings every few weeks, but we also lead outings and feminine hygiene drives for local homeless shelters. The IDEQ program does a great job of recognizing that simply talking about and understanding an issue (while great), isn’t always enough to create change in our communities.

Leading GSA really taught me that just because people don’t necessarily agree or associate with your identity, doesn’t mean they can’t learn about or offer support to you. I was repeatedly shocked by how open people were and how much empathy everyone had.

The biggest thing I gained from my experience as being a leader was perspective. Sometimes my own fears hold me back so much more than any individual could. I had these fears that I would never be accepted as a man which made me shy away from masculinity as a whole. I found it easier to embrace the gay stereotype than be true to myself and face real rejection.

Leading GSA taught me that when it comes down to it, people are way more empathetic than I gave them credit for. I led GSA to help other people open up their perspectives, and yet what I saw totally changed my own view of the world, and for that, I am forever grateful.

GSA was an opportunity for me to show others that they weren’t alone.

MODELING EQUITY AND INCLUSION

BY MAX W. ‘20, STUDENT SENATE PRESIDENT

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that MA had chosen to focus on its longstanding diversity, equity, and inclusion work in this fall’s NEXUS and that School Senate President, Max W. ‘20, gave a speech on inclusion on Opening Day. Certainly, the two events were not coordinated, but it may just be testament to the deep work that’s done in this area on campus everyday. Travis often speaks about compassion, and Max, as well as the entire senior class, truly exemplified this value and, with humor, created a great tone to kick-off the school year. With his speech, he and the senior class made everyone at opening assembly feel included, and that modeling is part of the DNA at MA.

Thank you, Travis, for the introduction, and thank you all for being here. As Travis said, my name is Max and I will be your student body president and cruise captain on this wild ride for the next 180 days. Many of you voted for me, and some of you did not, but we can talk about that later. And freshmen—well, you didn’t really have a say in the matter. Just picture me as a kind grandmother figure in your life and this speech is like a warm batch of cookies. Those of you who have been at these opening assemblies before will notice that, unlike the years past, my seniors (as I like to call them) did not sit in the designated senior corner and instead dispersed themselves among the other grades in the bleachers. We, as a grade, have decided to focus this year on inclusion. We would like to extend an invitation to the rest of the MA community to take this goal on as well. I, as well as the rest of the senior class, want to focus on breaking down the boundaries between the various friend groups, cliques, and grades at MA. Our school is filled with many incredible communities: those who play sports, or who do theater, and even each individual grade, just to name a few. The strength of each of these individual communities is really important, but we shouldn’t be a school

divided among these lines only. The senior class sitting among the younger grades is our way of kicking off the year by modeling what we hope to see in the future. Changing a social norm is never easy, but if we all commit to getting outside of our comfort zones and talking to new people, it will begin to feel normal. I want to challenge each and every person in this room, teachers included, to break outside of your social comfort zone at least once this week. Sit with a new person at lunch, or go to a new club meeting, or strike up a conversation with a teacher you don’t have. And I get it, it’s the first week back, so all I’m asking is once. And tell me about it! Send me an email with what you did, or tell me in the hallway.

I will be going around and checking with random people. I met one of my closest friends in the world on a chance encounter when I started talking to her for, basically, the first time outside of our math class. You never know what one small interaction with a new person can lead to. This could be the year that changes your life. Heck, you could meet someone walking out of this very assembly who ends up being a lifelong friend. So why not? It’s up to us to decide how this year goes, so let’s make it one to be proud of!

y office on the third floor of Foster Hall has a very small window overlooking the redwood deck of the Science + Innovation Center. For such a tiny opening, this window gives me a wide and interesting glimpse into the cycles of life at MA. In the fall and winter, the deck is filled in the early morning with prospective students and their parents, preparing to embark on a campus tour as they make the challenging and exciting decision of where to attend high school.

As MA nears its 50th anniversary, we are seeing more and more alumni on that deck with their 8th grade children who will decide whether or not MA is for them as much as it was for their parents. Such an important time in our history provides the perfect opportunity to connect alumni with students in a profound way and I’m thrilled to launch a new program for just that. For the first time, alumni will be involved in the prospective student interview process, giving alums a unique chance to build the future at MA. I’ve had the privilege of participating in the process for the last two years and have been awed by the kindness, humor, intelligence, and courage young people have today and hope our alumni have the opportunity to experience the same and to share their experiences and wisdom in return.

As the school year progresses, I see student clubs and groups joining

together to engage in conversation on everything from Harry Potter to the Global Role of Women (GROW) to tuition assistance at MA. Our student-led groups have grown and evolved over the years and still remain true to our founding values. In this NEXUS, you’ll find the incredible interview between Science Teacher, Mark Stefanski, and Brighid Dwyer ’97 who were part of MA’s Multicultural Leadership Program (MLP) that began in 1993. The 3-week summer program was co-directed by Mark and designed to be part of our school’s wider effort for MA’s historically white community to embrace cultural pluralism. Carrying on as a student group and meeting throughout the year, the MLP laid an important foundation for our ongoing equity and inclusion work at MA. In the Spring, when the window is open, I can hear students practicing plays and performances and start to see unbelievable artwork and projects taking shape and I am reminded of just how much talent has walked these hallways.

From athletes to artists and playwrights to photographers, alumni are leaders and experts in their fields. One of those leaders is Loren Elliott ’09 who was recently awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Photography for his work documenting the exodus of Central American Asylum seekers fleeing their home countries for the US. In conversation with fellow alum, Kier Holmes ’89 we learn more about how Loren has been shaped by his

Every other day at around 11:00 a.m., I can see the flood of 400+ students making their way to the gym for our all-school assembly where many memorable senior speeches are made.

Senior speeches can range from stand-up comedy gold to emotional and tearful moments of kinship and vulnerability for the entire community.

Many of these speeches contain words of advice to fellow students and a mature understanding of the fleeting time left in childhood. One of my favorite parts of senior speeches is when students express a moment that changed them at MA. One of those enlightening experiences happened for Julian Vasquez ’17. In an interview with fellow alum, Eddie Lee ’04, Julian reflects on the opportunity he had to give a TEDx Talk on unhealthy masculinity—a topic that became important to Julian as he discovered his own ability to be vulnerable; a lesson we should all be so lucky to learn in high school.

I’m excited and grateful to be starting another school year at Marin Academy where I’m joined by SEVEN awesome alumni who will be back on campus in faculty and staff roles. I’m also excited that MA will be launching a podcast in 2020 which will offer a wide range of topics and conversations and will provide a great opportunity to hear more about the ways alums are living our mission statement. In this coming year, I hope our alumni find moments of connection with MA that inspire and motivate you in the same ways you were inspired and motivated during your time here and I’ll be looking out from my window in Foster Hall to watch it all happen.

Leslie Alden shares, “I still live in Marin!

After 13 1/2 years working for elected Marin County Supervisors — in particular, the late Charles McGlashan, a visionary climate leader — I left in July to work full-time on climate solutions and community engagement.

I’m fortunate to have worked on significant projects for the County, including launching Marin Clean Energy and DRAWDOWN: Marin.

I took a sabbatical over the summer, mostly to tackle boring house projects, but also to catch up on reading and spend time with friends. Now, I’m busy participating in panel discussions, presentations on climate solutions, and working with multiple stakeholders on climate policy and community actions.

Another joy is seeing my daughter, Caitlin, living in Brooklyn, settle in to her community, with a challenging and rewarding job at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Manhattan, the nonprofit arm of Germany’s Democratic Socialist party. She’s working on good stuff, too.”

Helen Hansel has been living in the East Bay for many years.

She writes, “I am a psychotherapist with a part-time private practice. Mostly, I’ve spent my career years running non-profits. I retired from that three years ago and wrote my first mystery (alas, unpublished). I just started back volunteering for Ashby Village (an aging in place program) and consulting to FRSN (a retreat for First Responders with PTSD). Doing a little bit to make the world a better place has been a mission of mine. I have a 24-year-old son working in the tech world and a 16 yearold daughter who I just dropped off at The Mountain School in Vermont for a fall semester of intensive study and farm work. I’ve done some standup comedy over the years, but I admit that the current political climate has dampened my humor. I never thought I would say this, but I would go back to the 70s and high school in a heartbeat.”

Creating a Greater Sense of Inclusion Among Young Men Julian Vasquez ‘17 During his junior year at Marin Academy, Julian Vasquez and the rest of the MA community watched a screening of a documentary by Jennifer Siebel Newsom titled “The Mask You Live In.” The film follows young men struggling to stay true to themselves, while also trying to understand masculinity in America. As he watched the young men in the documentary wrestle with society’s narrow definition of masculinity, something resonated with Julian.

“It was really mind blowing,” he says.

“The language and conversation around this topic had never really been introduced to me. I grew up being taught the ‘rules’ of what it meant to be a man and how to behave. I started to analyze my behavior and assess how much of it I had just been using to survive and fit in.” At the time, Julian had been working with Charis Denison, who was previously MA’s human development teacher, to organize workshops on topics like ethics, values, and finding healthy ways of behaving. Julian also had a personal connection with Ashanti, as Ashanti had been his math teacher in fourth grade. “I reconnected with Ashanti and was really interested in working with him from the get-go,” says Julian.

“I realized it was so important to raise awareness around the rules that we’d been given. That makes it easier to realize what’s healthy and unhealthy.”

Like many young men, Julian grew up being taught that a man wasn’t supposed to show weakness and

should retaliate aggressively if challenged. Instead of expressing or identifying his feelings, a man should turn to anger and defense mechanisms.

“The problem with that is, not only can you cause harm to your relationships, but you don’t really learn how to trust,” says Julian. “If you can’t be vulnerable, you can’t ever truly be yourself and express how you’re really feeling.”

Julian began working with Charis and Ashanti to organize and present workshops on human development. In 2016, Charis was given an opportunity to give a TEDx talk in Tahoe, but she only agreed to participate if one of her students could give one as well.

Julian was chosen to be the speaker and present a TEDx talk on masculinity titled “A Young Man’s Relationship to Culture.” In his talk, Julian told a story from one of his workshops. He was with a group of high school boys and doing an activity where everyone would share the fears and emotions that they didn’t want to discuss. Julian was unsure how the group would respond to the activity, but one student bravely let his guard down in front of his peers and revealed his most personal struggles.

Soon, the other boys all began openly sharing. “The main thing I kept hearing throughout the room was that these kids felt alone,” Julian shared in his TEDx. “I had never seen young men so openly ready to share what was going on inside of them. They weren’t just ready, they were in need of it. The construct of unhealthy masculinity is a force that young men aren’t even aware of.”

As he prepares for his second year of college, Julian hopes to be able to pursue more human development work in the future, and perhaps even as a career. He appreciates MA not only for connecting him with mentors who provided important guidance, but also for being a place where this type of learning is so strongly encouraged.

Julian encourages current MA students, especially male students, to not see vulnerability as a sign of weakness, but instead as an indicator of courage. “It’s brave to share your feelings in front of people,” says Julian. “It shows real strength to trust others.”

Eddie Lee ‘04 is a writer, editor, and content creator for Little Passports, a children’s learning subscription service based in San Francisco. Eddie and his wife Annie welcomed their first daughter to the world this past February. He hopes all of his MA classmates, teachers, and advisors are doing well.

Chris Conrad says, “Last year was a big year of positive change, and though it was really tough at times, I made it through! First off, I had a new titanium hip installed, which only recently stopped hurting a lot. That was in June. Then, final arrangements were made for me to get divorced and move after 12 years of being together and marriage. Divorce is tough, especially when having to move with a new hip, heavy rains, and 32 bee hives. But what doesn’t kill ya’ makes ya’ stronger, and I’m now happy in a new home with a pain free hip. All good as they say!

Penny (Dinneen) Hillemann is the executive director of Rice County Area (Minnesota) United Way, having followed her heart to the nonprofit world in 2017. She writes she “is having an amazing time learning to play bluegrass banjo and loves attending regional bluegrass festivals.”

Kym Jordan says, “Hi all. I’ve been traveling the world, literally six continents in six weeks. Last April/May I directed a few productions of Hal Prince’s Evita in South Africa, Australia and China, as well as directing Choir of Man, a new show out of the Edinburgh Fringe. I am joining the creative team of Six this fall, another show out of the UK. I’m proud of my daughter Marin who graduated last year Summa Cum Laude from Northwestern University and has started her own business in NYC. I miss my days in the Bay Area, but I’m loving seeing the world and spreading music and theatre internationally.”

Mark Battat writes, “Moving to Rancho Mirage, California last summer was the best move I ever made. While I always had a good base of pals down here, I’ve met many more. I’m involved in my community, and I’m leading a group of cyclists on Saturday mornings. It’s also been a great year to catch up with lifelong friends. I still get back to SF monthly for office and client meetings and to see my family and friends. In short, no complaints.”

I don’t have too much time for painting or other art-making right now. I’m nursing knees that have finally just plain had it. I see Kim Gaddy and Polly Becker from time to time. I’m living in the crazy, beautiful urban + rural East Bay near Wildcat Canyon and going home to Point Reyes when I can stand wading through the crowds. (When did it become The Riviera?) I’m wishing everyone occasional peace in these difficult times.”

Anne Chaitin shares, “I have been working full time for a construction sweeping company doing all kinds of payroll and accounting. I love my job, and I still can’t believe it — me in accounting. I have been living in Hayward for the past 16 years. I still am a supernumerary with San Francisco Ballet. I think of Marin Academy all the time and know I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”

Heather (Anderson) Parker is preparing for the empty nest as her boys go off to university in the fall. “Our oldest will be entering her last year at Davis,” she shares. “I’m enjoying teaching English as a Second Language at Dominican University and Redwood High School.

Deirdre Richards writes, “I just finished collaborating with my brother on a slice of life drama movie script (he lives in Holland which definitely posed some fun communication challenges for us to bridge) and have a director potentially interested. Also, I just put a TV show I wrote a few years back into the hands of a producer. I’m hoping that maybe after all the stop starts I’ve had in the industry over the years, maybe I’m finally making the right connections to get to be the real me. We shall see.

I have recently become a teacher. Yep, a teacher. I give lessons in Business Management and Mathematics at an international school in Sao Paulo.

It has only been six months, but I find it challenging and exhilarating. Obviously, it was time to leave the corporate world. Best to all.”

Reed Fromer currently teaches 24 chorus classes per week, is still gigging steadily with his R&B band, and just completed a 13-song CD, One Life to Love. He says, “I also coordinate the seasonal leagues for the Fromer Family soccer business, am working on getting a first novel published, and have built a steady following with my political op-eds on Facebook. Meanwhile, my wife Gina is the new CEO of the San Francisco Children’s Council, and our son Devin, an aspiring filmmaker, is starting his junior year at San Rafael High.”

Mireille Morshead says, “I’ve recently relocated to upstate NY where I ‘bought the farm’ and am setting up a wholesome free range poultry meat production and rescuing horses. We are still in our ‘infancy stage’ here. It’s all very exciting and tremendously adventurous every day as we are starting almost from scratch, barring the existing HUGE barn [which is] falling down, but an adequate farm house already here. Watch for us in the coming years as we grow and endeavor to provide the healthy farm-to-table meats to as many households as we can: MoJo Valley Farms — Home of ‘Le Poulet Rouge.’”

Dana provides nationwide consulting for independent schools on marketing and enrollment. She has spoken at conferences in Nashville, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. this past year. She’s been directing local theater and will be doing a production in spring 2020. I am on tour for my new book Living in Flow: The Science of Synchronicity and How Your Choices Shape Your World. I continue my research in this field, and I’ve also completed my 11th singer-songwriter album. We were at MA in June to celebrate the graduation of our niece Kaia Schweig ‘19. It was great to send off Tom Woodward into retirement and visit Derek Anderson and Mark Stefanski. We recently had dinner with Katie Warfield, and Rana Barar and I appeared on Jodi Klugman-Rabb’s podcast.”

Caleb Fitzpatrick shares, “The last few years have been life-altering. I got divorced after a 25-year marriage, went on the first alumni Vision Quest (now Wilderness Quest at MA) with Beau and James, and my son became a teenager and started high school (La Jolla Country Day ‘22). I met an amazing woman and fell in love again, and this past June I merged my college counseling business with the team at Magellan College Counseling. I have a great job helping students and families with the college admissions process. I’m turning 50 this year and am extremely grateful for the second chapter of life and for my connections to MA all these years later!”

Joshua Davis is producing a show called Little America that debuts on Apple TV this Fall. “It’s about the immigrant experience in this country,” he says.

Family life continues to be good — working on getting Elliot (class of 2029) and Lyra (class of 2031) ready for their time at MA.”

I have recently finished my credential, and I have two more classes for my Master’s of Education. I will be working in the San Diego Unified School District this fall. I’m working from Baltimore Airport with Southwest Airlines and flying all over North America visiting family and friends weekly. I’ve had multiple dinners with Sari Yadena, Rachael Goeriz, and Rebecca Israel and a few visits with Dylan Clark. Chris Stephan is on my must-see list in Seattle. I’ve spent time in West Marin with the Wheelers, Francesca Myman, Willow Regnery, and Aaron Gill. I had lunch in Grand Rapids with Joel Schekman and ran into Robbie Stauder at a rooftop party in Brooklyn. I saw Debbie Eisenberg on a trans-USA flight once. I see Dan Cooper ’96 and Lor Melvin ’88 almost seasonally. All meetings had one thing in common: The MA Spirit. We all became adults through the same awesome school.”

Josh Knox was able to cross paths this year with a few alums. “Dylan Sears, and family (Danielle, Westley and Ophelia) joined my family (Brita and Caliandra) for a fun night of camping at Tully Lake Campground in Royalston, MA,” he shares. “This is a property owned by the Trustees, the organization for which I still work as a Stewardship Manager. We went canoeing, swimming and (of course) made ‘smores. Then, later in the summer we were visited by Willow Regnery ‘96, and her two not-so-littles, Cody and Maddy. I am still in regular contact with Cindi Stephan ‘92, as well. Many adventures were had!”

Boonville, California is my home now, with a family that includes a horse, a cartpulling goat, cats, and dogs. It is the quintessential country life that gives enough space to have a studio and farmers as neighbours. I have been exploring cordage as a process of transformation — taking what is precious and thread bare and turning it into essentially rope. It’s a way to bring memories forward and slow down. I am on the school board, and my kids are 10 and 12. I have been reflecting back on what it means to be welleducated. I experienced snow camping and read the amazing adventure story Endurance, rock climbing, running cross country, and being able to dive fully into my passion for art — so many opportunities that are not a part of public education. What a gift.”

Danielle Katz graduated in July with an MBA in Environmental Management from Bangor University in Wales. She says, “I had an incredible year being a student again, learning, engaging in sustainability projects, and activating my creativity through acting in theatre productions and student films. I produced a series of short sustainability videos on single-use plastics, recycling, and well-being with Source to Sea Productions, and I continue to manage my river conservation non-profit Rivers for Change, focusing on training the next generation of environmental stewards. Hopefully, I’ve found a job and a way to relocate to the UK by the time this is published! As always, I continue to love to spend time outdoors, and highlight trips of the year included 23 days rowing down the Grand Canyon in February (brrr yes, it was cold), visiting spring wildflowers in Texas, and returning to my favorite river in Oregon, the Rogue.”

After giving birth to Lana (now 5), we moved back to Marin for a few years where Kilian (now 3) was born. We continue to travel abroad whenever we can with the kids (most recently Costa Rica and Borneo) and love exposing them to the outdoors. We have since moved back to Spain and are visited often by Aunt Jenny Trang ‘01. She is now working with me at the same company again (dynamic Trang duo forever!). We’ve spent a couple weeks each summer camping in the Pyrenees and look forward to more fun family adventures! We welcome any visitors (especially with playmates!).”

Documenting History through Photojournalism Loren Elliott ‘09 Loren Elliott ’09 is a freelance photojournalist based in Houston, Texas. He says, “There’s a cliché that being a photojournalist provides a front row seat to history but it’s so true.

Some of that history is thrilling. Some is tragic. But I’m grateful for the chance to document all of it.” And that is just what Loren is doing. Currently he is on assignment documenting the exodus of Central American Asylum seekers fleeing their home countries for the US. “I’m dedicated to this immigration story because it’s a true humanitarian crisis that is at a boiling point. Many have lost their loved ones to organized violence in Honduras and El Salvador.

I want people far from the border to understand their plight, to care about their struggles, and for that to result in political engagement. I strive to accomplish that through my pictures.”

Loren believes that photographs can be a tremendously powerful way to educate people, and because of that viewpoint you’d think he’d taken photography all through MA. But this wasn’t the case, or his path. Instead, Loren took photography as an art elective, mentioning though that if he could go back and do MA differently, “I would have worked for the student newspaper. I wish I had discovered journalism years earlier.”

The photojournalist work Loren does is both physically and emotionally demanding and running emotionally recharges him and keeps him physically strong. What also keeps Loren strong, focused, and fighting the fight is that he feels a deep responsibility to educate the world on the day-to-day realities these migrants are facing. And recently, Loren’s drive and hard work was applauded: Loren was part of a team of 11 Reuters photographers who won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography with their ongoing coverage of Central American migrants seeking asylum in the U.S. Loren’s photo documented a woman from Honduras reuniting with her 6-year-old son in Harlingen, Tex. after a monthlong separation.

It wasn’t until the end of college that Loren discovered photojournalism. He worked for the student newspaper at Seattle University before graduating, and then realized his passion through that experience, which then motivated him to study photojournalism in the

When he reflects on his time at MA, he fondly notes, “Nancy Hoffman was one of the most wonderful educators I’ve ever crossed paths with, and I feel so lucky to have learned from her. I’ll always remember how Nancy cultivated independence and sense-of-self in her students.” Loren also mentions Liz Gottlieb and Ken Ellingboe as being hugely influential. “They coached me in cross-country all four years and led a fantastic running minicourse to the mountains of North Carolina.

I’d never run before MA. Liz and Ken turned running into one of my biggest passions—one that has shepherded me through life’s highs and lows. I’ll always be grateful to them for being such supportive, caring coaches.”

Loren said in an interview for Point Reyes Light, “There was a lot of time that I put in to gain enough trust with Anita, the mother, so that in that moment, she forgot about me, she trusted me, she trusted my intention in being there and I was able to capture a moment of genuine intimacy.”

He continued, “There is a lot of responsibility for me as a photographer to not add to the trauma with my presence, by pointing a lens at them.

My approach is to be a human first, and a photographer second.”

Kier went on to graduate from UC Berkeley in Social Science and first became an advertising copywriter, and is now a landscape designer and garden educator. Lily Bernheimer is very happy to have finally moved back to Berkeley two years ago after 14 years away from the Bay Area! She writes, “My first book, The Shaping of Us: How Everyday Spaces Structure Our Lives, Behavior, and Well-Being was published this June in the US (after first being published by Little, Brown in the UK). I had moved to the UK in 2011 to pursue a Master’s in Science in Environmental Psychology, where I also co-founded my company, Space Works Consulting. I continue to apply environmental psychology research to help design living and working spaces supporting human well-being in the US and UK, including A Guide to Wellbeing in Prison Design for the British Ministry of Justice, which won the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) President’s Award for Research.” You can find more about her work and book at spaceworksco.com.

Jayme Brown writes, “I joined the nonprofit organization Women’s Audio Mission about a year ago.

I manage our interns, I’m a program coordinator, and I’m a youth instructor teaching the recording arts to middle and high school girls. We host various events as well, like a panel conversation with Prince’s engineers in July, and a quarterly concert series called Local Sirens featuring Bay Area women fronted musical acts. It has been my dream job come to fruition.”

Martin Benes writes, “I recently finished up my first year working with the US Paralympic Nordic Ski Team. Still based in California, I have the opportunity to work with five National Team athletes in both cross-country skiing and biathlon, including three medalists from the Pyeongchang Winter Games.”

Alexandra “Xan” Morris is an associate Marriage and Family Therapist, expressive arts therapist and clinical hypnotherapist. She says, “I currently work as a grief counselor in hospice and as an expressive arts therapist for Contra Costa County Regional Hospital.

I work with a variety of populations, including chronically and terminally ill adults, bereaved adults and children, individuals in addiction recovery, brain-injured adults, dementia patients, individuals transitioning out of prison, detainees in detention centers, children/ teens in psychiatric wards, and children living with Epilepsy. I incorporate the healing arts, namely the visual arts, literary arts, music therapy, drama therapy and dance/movement therapy into my work.”

Ben Amen says, “At the time of this writing, it’s 18 hours before the start of the 50th anniversary of the Transpac race, which runs from Long Beach, CA to Honolulu, Hawaii. I’ll race aboard a Santa Cruz 50 named Horizon, and this team and I won the Newport to Cabo San Lucas race in March. We’re vying against 10 other teams for the podium in Honolulu, so it should be an interesting race!”

Emily Hendrick is still living in San Francisco and working for environmental nonprofit Friends of the Earth. “I also lead the San Francisco Chapter of the American Alpine Club,” she says. “I am looking forward to reconnecting with fellow classmates at our 15-year reunion!”

Daniel Lewis and his wife Allie welcomed baby Mia Lewis into the world in March 2019. He shares, “She’s a cutie, and we’re happily living in San Francisco’s Richmond District, near Golden Gate Park. Brian Dito says, “I am finishing up my first year working at the US Consulate General in Chengdu, China. It’s an interesting time to be working on US-China relations. Most of my work involves interviewing Chinese seeking US visas.

The work is eye-opening and has given me new perspective on our trade issues, the immigration debate, Tibet, and national security. If you’re ever in Southwest China, look me up!”

Dennis Roberts writes, “I am still in NYC and working with Nick Fehr at The Bosco, a company that does photo and video installations for events.

Michael Spilsbury and I created an arcade cabinet last year called “Face Race” which we are trying to place in a bar in Brooklyn. Rosie Ellis is also in NYC but considering moving to LA, where she will finally have to get her driver’s license and will be able to hang out with her dear friend, cobbler and shoe designer Victoria Horning. Jake Forsland is also in NYC, just bought an apartment, and has a dog. Jake and I, along with many others, attended a pool party for Chris Schaible in LA. Brian Dito is still in China and couldn’t attend, though he keeps up with the group via a WhatsApp StarTrek group chat.”

Taylor Tan says, “I’ll be starting my 6th year as a member of the MA math department in the fall and am somehow the third longest-tenured member of the department now! I am leading outings, coaching track, and helping to shepherd WQ into a new era. In my personal life, I’m living in Sausalito, brewing beer, cooking, and raising five (soon to be more) snakes.

I’ve got three corn snakes, a western hognose, and a rainbow boa. I plan to start breeding western hognoses in the next few years! If you plan to be on campus, please let me know; I’d love to connect with you, show you around our new buildings and facilities, and have lunch with you!”

Chelsea Neville says, “Hey MA! I cannot believe how time is flying by. Seems like yesterday I just gradauted! I am about to graduate and receive my Bachelors of Nursing in October while working full time as an Emergency Room Nurse.

I just transitioned into the Emergency Room in October of last year. It is quite an experience as I work at Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital, and we are small but treat so many areas around us, so we are a very busy ER! I love it all, and it is so rewarding, I have plans in the future to work in a Trauma Center, but that will be in a few years.”

Adrian St Francis writes, “I am currently working as an attorney for Debevoise & Plimpton in New York City, handling international arbitration, civil litigation, and internal investigation matters for a wide array of public and privately held companies. Last spring I proposed to Hannah Kopinski, and both of us are blissfully ensconced in Long Island City where we can breathe (slightly) fresher air than in Manhattan but still enjoy the view of the skyline.

Whenever we are able, we love to rock climb and practice yoga, though usually as separate activities.”

Olivia Lloyd shares, “I’ve lived in London for three years now, with no immediate plans to move back! I came back to California this summer to run my 14th Dipsea and soak up some sun. I’ve got life pretty good across the pond despite all the Brexit nonsense; one of my housemates is a Michelin-Star Chef, who has sworn to help me pull off my next international-edition Thanksgiving.

I’m working for Ogilvy Consulting, where my work focuses on developing brand and business strategy for several global brands. That usually means helping companies compete with the likes of Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Uber etc., and transform as traditional business models and industries are disrupted.”

COMINGS ROBERT AWKWARD is the newest addition to the college counseling team at MA, serving as Associate Director of College Counseling. Most recently, Robert worked as College Counseling Director at a Montessori high school in Houston, called The Post Oak School. During that time, he helped to develop and enrich the nascent college counseling program at Post Oak, guiding students toward their best fit post-secondary opportunities.

Robert earned his B.A. with a double major in Human Development & Social Relations and Spanish & Hispanic Studies from Earlham College, and his M.Ed. in Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Houston. Robert deeply enjoys and would be happy to talk about live music, a good comic book, and the Hollywood film industry.

FRANK CASSANO is a teacher in the math department.

Frank comes to us from the Taft School in Watertown, CT where he has served as a teacher, a mentor for the Penn Fellows program, a Head Dorm Parent, a two-sport coach, and more. Prior to his work at Taft, Frank taught at Poly Prep in Brooklyn and the Knox School in St. James, New York where he was a teacher and department chair.

Josh earned his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University and earned a Master’s degree in Educational Technology at the University of San Francisco. Prior to joining MA, Josh spent the last six years working in Berkeley at East Bay School for Boys, teaching 6th and

7th-grade math and working as the Director of Technology, Athletics, and Outdoor Education. Josh also worked for a teen adventure travel outfitter for several summers and carries an array of outdoor and international leadership experiences. He was lucky enough to guide trips in Costa Rica, Tahiti, Fiji, Spain, Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Morocco.

Prior to settling down in the Bay Area, Josh lived in Tahoe and worked for several years on the Professional Ski Patrol at Squaw Valley Ski Resort.

Additionally, Josh has worked as a math tutor for Compass Education Group, served as the Math Apprentice at the High Mountain Institute, and taught middle school math and science at the Tahoe Expedition Academy. When he isn’t teaching, Josh loves to explore the Bay Area’s vast network of trails on his mountain bike as much as possible and spend quality time with his son Teagan, wife Nicole, and dog Dakota.

WHITNEY DAVIDSON earned her B.A. from Grinnell College and her M.A. from Yale University. She teaches history at MA and has been teaching history for fifteen years and has loved every minute of it, ever since her time as a teacher-intern at Summerbridge San Francisco. She taught at LincolnSudbury Regional High School, Poly Prep Country Day School, and the Gill St. Bernard’s School. Although she’s sad to leave the East Coast, where she’s lived nearly most all of her life, she could not be more excited to join the faculty at Marin Academy.

JULIE HELMBRECHT brings her passion for supporting education to her work at Marin Academy, where she is a Communications Associate in the Advancement Office. She serves as the editor of Marin Academy’s weekly e-newsletter, This Week at MA (TW@ MA), and acts as the liaison for the

Marin Academy Parents Association, providing support in promoting MAPA’s many programs. Julie received her B.A. from UC Irvine in Social Ecology with an emphasis in Human Behavior.

She has spent much of her career furthering communication efforts in both public and independent educational institutions. Most recently, Julie has been involved in the San Francisco Unified School District, The Bay School, and the California Teacher Development Collaborative (CATDC).

When she is not at work, Julie can be found on the tennis court, exploring the outdoors with her husband and two teenagers, or in the kitchen baking something new and (hopefully) fabulous.

HANNAH HOHLE teaches English at MA and graduated from UC Berkeley with a major in American Studies and a minor in African American Studies. During her junior year, she studied abroad at the University of Hong Kong. After college, she taught middle school English Language Arts at a public charter school in Washington DC, where she completed her student teaching and earned her Masters of Education. Prior to her arrival at Marin Academy, she taught 9th and 10thgrade writing and literature at The Marin School in San Rafael. Hannah is also a Teacher Consultant for the Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP) based at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education. Her passions, besides teaching, include reading, taking road trips and traveling with friends, volunteering at the Humane Society, and rock climbing.

SARAH JANOFFBRINN ‘03 is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has been working with adolescents for over ten years in both New York and in the Bay Area. Prior to starting at MA, Sarah worked at the Masonic Center for Youth and Families in San Francisco

providing therapy to children, youth, and families. Sarah also sees teens in her private practice in Corte Madera.

Sarah graduated from Bates College in Maine with a B.A. in Philosophy and Educational Studies and has a Master’s in Social Work from Columbia University. She is also a proud Marin Academy alum from the class of 2003!

Sarah lives in San Rafael with her husband and young daughter, and loves cooking and being outdoors.

ANTON KARBUSHEV is the new Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Mind, Body, Brain coordinator. Anton has been working in health and wellness for the last fifteen years, with experience ranging from personal training and physical therapy to internships with the New York Jets and San Jose Sharks. For the previous six years, he worked as the Strength and Conditioning Coach at Menlo School in Atherton, CA, as well as the College of San Mateo. Originally born in the Soviet Union, Anton immigrated to the United States with his family in 1992 at the age of eight.

He now lives in San Francisco with his wife, Ashley, who is also a high school teacher.

SARA KERR is a member of the visual arts faculty working as a photography teacher. Prior to Marin Academy, Sara worked at Castilleja School teaching photography, visual arts, and philosophy. Sara received her B.A. (with honors) in Philosophy from The University of Melbourne, Australia.

She also holds an M.A. in Philosophy from Stanford University and an MFA from Mills College. Sara is a working artist, so when she is not teaching you can find her in her studio at Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco. If she’s not there, she is probably out surfing, hiking or curled up somewhere reading.

BIJANI MIZELL is an English Teacher/ Instructional Coach.

Prior to Marin Academy, Bijani worked at Branson for seven years as an Assistant Learning Specialist, Director of Community Engagement, Dean of Freshman, and most recently, English Department Chair. Bijani has worked as a journalist in Ulaanbataar, Mongolia, as a fashion writer in London and San Francisco, and in book publishing in New York and San Francisco.

She earned her B.A. in English from Princeton University and her M.A. in English Literature from King’s College London. Bijani lives in Marin with her husband Will and son Theoden. When not chasing after her newly running toddler, she is likely trying out a new recipe, dancing in a West African or Zumba class, or watching a British murder mystery.

ANGELINE SARIS joins the Performing Arts Department as a part-time contemporary music teacher. Angeline has been a teacher and mentor for over twelve years to hundreds of Marin bass students ages 7-65. She has given dozens of clinics locally and internationally, and she is a touring bassist for Reggae and ska pioneer Ernest Ranglin, Grammy award-winning producer Narada, and an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute Zepparella (2011-2018).

Angeline is a fixture of the Bay Area music community, regularly performing multiple genres including blues, folk, hip-hop, reggae, ska, R&B, soul, pop, jam band, funk, Motown, gospel, fusion, rock, jazz, Afro-Cuban, salsa, bluegrass, polka, surf-rock, flamenco, and speed-metal.

KYLE VITALE is the Director of Technology.

Kyle comes to us with 8 years of technology director experience,

most recently from the International School of Brooklyn and the IDEAL School before that. Kyle holds a Masters degree in Engineering in Networked Information Systems from Stevens Institute of Technology and an earlier B.A. from NYU that combined Computer Technologies, Japanese studies, and Studio Art. PETER WALKER is the Visual Arts Department Chair. Previous to joining MA, he worked for nine years at Milken Community Schools in Los Angeles, California in the Visual Arts Department and for the past six years as the Visual Arts Department Chair. Peter received a B.A. in English and Visual Arts from Brigham Young University and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Peter is an active gallery exhibiting artist and has displayed his work throughout the Western United States and New York City. He explores issues of identity, community, and politics through figurative drawing. When he isn’t in the classroom or his studio, he is busy wrestling, playing astronaut or reading to his three boys.

CHRIS YEE joins Marin Academy as a science teacher from San Lorenzo High School in the East Bay, where he has been teaching Physics.

Chris earned a B.A. in Physics and a Master’s in Arts in Teaching from Brown University. Chris is passionate about integrating social justice perspectives into science education and loves exploring the history and philosophy of physics. Hailing from sandy shores of Honolulu, Hawaii, Chris enjoys juggling arts, electronic music, and listening to physics and philosophy podcasts in his spare time.

TOM WOODWARD came to MA in 1989 and taught US History and Modern World History as well as electives in Russian History, Constitutional Law, European History, 20th Century American History, and Economics. He served as an academic counselor and led the Bay Area History minicourse. During his time at MA, he served for fifteen years as Senior Class Dean, spent one year as a college counselor, and coached numerous teams, including golf, tennis, and basketball.

Tom received a B.A. from Bowdoin College and an M.A. from Wesleyan University. Before coming to MA, he worked at the Thacher School in Ojai, where he taught, coached, and served

JOANI LACEY provided ongoing support for students and intervention for those in crisis, and had been at MA since 2001. The support included short term therapy with students and providing recommendations for outside resources as requested or needed. She also consulted with faculty and staff on issues involving individual students and student community issues. In addition, she ran workshops for the freshman Human Development classes on managing stress. In the sophomore Human Development classes, she facilitated students’ study of their own group dynamics prior to their class’ examination of sensitive issues of adolescence.

Joani co-led Peer Resources and WISE (Women in Support and Empowerment). And, along with Sanjai Moses, she organized Communications

Evening each fall until last year. She was an active member of the Deans Group and a member of the MA Crisis Response Team.

Joani earned a B.A. in Art from California State University at Long Beach and an M.A. in Clinical Art Therapy and Marriage and Family Counseling from Loyola Marymount University. After completing her Masters degree, she was awarded the Post Graduate Clinical Art Therapy Fellowship at Cedars SInai Medical Center: Outpatient Family Mental Health Division, where she honed her clinical skills with some of the top psychiatrists and psychologists in the country. During her time there she received intensive training in adolescent treatment working under the direction of noted adolescent psychologist Elaine Leader. Her clinical training was primarily in LA County Mental Health Clinics, including outpatient and day treatment centers. She also maintained a private practice for fifteen years working with adolescents and their families.

Joani and her husband Bruce have twins who graduated from MA in 2006.

JULIE BARNES At MA since 2013. Julie was MA’s Outings Director, and had been working with the Outings Program since 2011. Julie was also a member of the math department, and taught two sections of Algebra II. Julie received an M.A. in Divinity and an M.A. in Spirituality from the San Francisco Theological Seminary, where she focused on how spiritual practices can affect one’s capacity to transform trauma. Julie also holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Bowdoin College.

Julie is an experienced wilderness trip leader who has led trips for Marin Academy in addition to the Center for Nature and Spirituality, Point Reyes Outdoors, Homer Ocean Charters, the Chewonki Foundation, Holderness School, and the Bowdoin Outings Club.

WINSTON CHOU At MA since 2013. Winston was the Director of Technology and helped Marin Academy define its academic technology program and information technology services to support the school’s vision for teaching and learning in the 21st century. He also taught the Architecture and Technology course in the Visual Arts Department.

LAURIE CLARK At MA since 2013. Laurie taught English III, Poetry, Creative Non Fiction, and 20th Century American Novel. She was also a junior academic counselor, a study coach, a member of the admissions committee and advisor to MA’s literary magazine, Echoes.

SHAWN COLEWOODS At MA since 2016. Shawn was a member of the Science Department and taught Physics. Shawn earned a B.S. in Physics with a Mathematical Emphasis from

Tougaloo College and is in progress toward a Ph.D. in Molecular Sciences and Nanotechnology from Louisiana Tech University. Prior to MA, Shawn lived in Memphis where he worked as an Adjunct Physics Instructor at Baptist College of Health Sciences.

JEN COTÉ At MA since 2006. Jen was a member of the mathematics department. Jen received an A.B. from Middlebury College and an M.A. from Stanford University. An integral part of the MA community, Jen led numerous students on minicourses and outings and even found time to mentor new teachers at MA. MARCOS GARCIA At MA since 2016. Marcos was a member of the English Department and taught English 1 and senior/junior electives. Marcos taught at UC Berkeley where he earned his Ph.D. in English and Medieval Studies. Prior to his time at Berkeley, Marcos received an M.A. in English from Pennsylvania State University and a B.A. in English from Colorado State.

JOSH SMITH At MA since 2016. Josh was a member of the Visual Arts Department and taught Photography and Foundation Arts. He earned his MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and his BFA in Photography from Missouri State University.

BECCA WADMAN At MA since 2018. Becca was the Strength and Conditioning Coach.

No stranger to MA, Becca had been working with the girls lacrosse program as the Varsity Head Coach, leading MA girls to their first league championship in just three years. She was the owner and head coach of CrossFit Sausalito where she had a multitude of experience working with individuals of all ages and experiences in performance, wellness and health.

Lisa LaHorgue was a Communications Associate where she supported the efforts of the Advancement Office. Lisa worked as the editor of MA’s weekly e-newsletter, This Week at MA (TW@MA). There are many varieties and I am proud to say that they are all on display on the following pages. We are a community of givers and doers. A community that cares about the present and the future.

As we conclude an amazing fundraising year, I’m drawn to a quote from the famous American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson: “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

Since the very beginning, Marin Academy has been built on philanthropy, and this giving spirit continues to be a key to our future success. Time after time I find myself humbled by the generosity that lies within the hundreds of loyal alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, grandparents, and community partners who steadfastly support our School. Your gifts make us stronger and provide momentum to propel us on our path forward.

This year’s Annual Report provides just a small window into the power of giving and how our caring community is coming together to help us achieve our goals. I encourage you to read the inspiring stories and see our list of valued donors. Every gift to MA is meaningful. Whether you made your first gift in the past year or have made annual donations for decades, please accept my sincere gratitude.

GRATITUDE FOR THE COMMUNITY AT MA

A Culture of Generosity MA parents and volunteers, Rhea and Rajan Dev (Aasha ‘20), sit down for a conversation with us about their family’s MA experiences and why they are motivated to give back in so many ways.

What is your connection to MA? Our connection to MA began when our 8th grade daughter led us to the school where she thought she might feel most comfortable - MA. She immediately understood that while MA is an academic school, the arts and creativity are also valued. Aasha is now a senior and has had the opportunity to make lots of friends while feeling fully supported—maintaining her academic interests while also pursuing her artistic, athletic, and personal growth interests. Since we’ve joined the MA community as a family, Rhea (Aasha’s mom) has worked as a volunteer archivist in the MA library focusing on helping the library team catalog and preserve materials relating to MA and its history. In addition, Rhea has volunteered with the Annual Fund since Aasha started at MA. Rajan (Aasha’s dad) joined the Board of Trustees two years ago and is part of committees focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Strategic Plan achievement.

In addition, we’ve enjoyed helping with new student and family activities, as well as volunteering and supporting arts and sports activities.

What is a profound memory you have of your child’s experience at MA? In general, we’ve loved the experience that Aasha has had with the Arts at MA, especially given her early recognition of MA’s unique culture. While high school can be hard in general, MA does an amazing job of providing an environment that feels safe and supportive, and ensuring students feel valued while they experiment with new activities and try new pursuits. This is a gift that we wish all children would have an opportunity to experience.

Specifically, Aasha’s experience as the first young woman to join the MA baseball team in the Spring of 2017 was amazing.

It was not always easy for her, but it has proven to be an experience from which Aasha can draw strength and insight for the rest of her life. To be clear, Aasha had not played baseball before and she had stopped playing softball after elementary school. We imagine most of the boys on the team had played baseball throughout their elementary and middle school years.

Aasha jumped in as the only female on the team, took on the physical challenges of high school baseball, and learned to embrace the team culture. The boys on the team were great in supporting her participation, but Coach Ron was especially amazing. Aasha is an only child and attended an all-girls middle school, so she hadn’t had a lot of experience with boys in a team environment. Coach Ron was unwavering in his support, yet realistic and direct. He helped Aasha participate in the best way possible. He helped her understand the “banter” between the players and she eventually became more engaged and therefore a part of the team. Being the first to do something can be very hard, but has its own rewards. It was amazing to experience this with her in such a supportive environment.

What have you learned or gained through your involvement as a volunteer at MA? While we had experience with knowing MA alumni when we lived in the East Bay, we didn’t have much insight into MA’s culture. We were told that the faculty was outstanding, that the location was great, and that alums stayed in touch with each other. We’ve since confirmed that all these things are true, and the culture helps preserve the continuity.

We’ve learned that the roots behind the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion elements of the culture go back more than a decade with explicit faculty and staff support and training. By participating in

this area, we gained further appreciation of MA’s institutional approach to complex and critically important subject matter.

Also, we learned first-hand how Travis is such a unique and gifted steward of the environment and culture.

Also, through our time volunteering on campus, we have seen first-hand the strength of MA’s faculty, both academically and as individuals. The library is a good example, where both librarians are writers with one having just published a book while the other is on the path to publishing. We constantly see examples of the expected, strong academic competency, but with a consistent focus on the students as individuals. This focus on students, their inclusion, and wellbeing, comes through consistently in interactions we witness while on campus.

We’re so proud of the faculty at MA. Even while they pursue their academic accomplishments, their focus remains the well-being of our children.

Why do you support MA? We support MA for all the reasons and experiences we’ve outlined. We think it is an amazing environment/institution and we want to help make it and its culture accessible and supportive to a wider spectrum of students and their families.

Understanding that everyone’s inspiration, motivations, even capacity to give can be very different, why should one give to the Annual Fund?

Our children gain so much from their experiences at MA. They will carry these experiences forward in their lives and into the world. For us, out of gratitude for what Aasha is receiving and the positive ways in which it will impact the rest of her life, we feel we must contribute what we can to help. We want to model that we should give to organizations that we believe in so that our daughter continues these behaviors in her life, whether through service and/or financial giving.

New Board Members JESSICA EISLER Jessica and her husband, Michael, are residents of San Francisco and parents to Alexandra ‘22, Sam in 8th grade, and Nathaniel in 6th grade. She received a B.S. from the University of Oregon and an M.S. in Physical Therapy from Samuel Merritt University. Her previous work includes Kentfield Hospital, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, and Rehab Without Walls. She recently founded Function & Beyond, a home modification consulting firm for clients of all ages facing varying degrees of physical limitations. Jessica serves on the Common Sense Media San Francisco Bay Area Advisory Council and Service Corps Board, and she also enjoys being active in her children’s schools. She has volunteered for the MA Annual Fund and within the Hamlin and Town School communities, including in the roles of Town Annual Fund Chair, Fall Fundraiser Chair, and the Parents’ Association President.

KEVIN THAU Kevin resides in Ross and is the parent of Mallory ‘22, 7th grader Jordan, and 5th grader Sadie. He is a General Partner at Spark Capital and previously was an early employee at startups such as Twitter, Openwave, and SGI. Kevin earned his B.S. from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

SARA BYRNE Sara and her husband, Tom, live in San Francisco with their children Sophia ’20, Audrey ’21, and Tucker, an 8th grader.

Sara is the president of the Marin Academy Parents Association (MAPA).

She previously worked in the Sales and Trading division of Montgomery Securities and currently serves on the Gateway School Board of Trustees. Sara has been

a member of the board at the Belvedere Tennis and Swim Club and is an active volunteer at San Francisco Day School.

Sara holds a B.S. in Finance and Real Estate from the University of Arizona.

MOLLY TANNER Molly is a MA math faculty member and a resident of San Rafael. She previously taught in Nashville, TN and at the Flint Hill School in Washington, DC. She has served at MA as a senior academic counselor, a faculty advisor for the financial aid IDEQ group, and an outings leader. Molly received a B.S. from Vanderbilt in Math and Child Studies, as well as an M.Ed. from Vanderbilt in Child Studies.

IAN MCKINNON Ian and his wife, Sonnet, split their time between Mill Valley and Greenwich, CT, and are parents to Ashley ‘22 and William, who attends Duke University. Ian currently works at Sandia Holdings, LLC, and he previously worked at Ziff Brothers Investment. Prior to joining ZBI, he was an investment banking analyst with Merrill Lynch & Co. and a consultant with Bain.

Ian is a Trustee of Albuquerque Academy and Santa Fe Institute, and a Trustee Emeritus at Occidental College. He has served on the MA Investment Committee and is a former board member of REACH Prep, an organization that provides academic assistance to underprivileged middle school students. Ian holds a B.A. from Occidental and an MBA from Harvard.

LORRI HAMILTON DURBIN Lorri lives in San Francisco with her husband and son and is the Head of School at Town School for Boys. She has previously served as Middle School Director for the Dalton School, NYC;

Associate Director for The Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University; Head of the Middle School for The Nueva School in Hillsborough; Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at San Francisco University High School; and Alumni Coordinator, Admissions Counselor and teacher for Midland School in Los Olivos. In addition, Lorri worked for Cambridge Associates, LLC and Goldman Sachs. She is currently on the Board of Directors of the International Boys School Coalition and is a member of the Common Sense Media Regional Council. She has also served twice as a member of the Board of Directors of the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) Board. Lorri received her B.A. in Government from Pomona College, her M.A. in Policy and Administration from Stanford University, and her MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

SOPHIE ROSS Sophie lives in San Francisco with her husband, Dane, and her children Michael ‘22 and Michael’s brother, who is a student at Carnegie Mellon. She is the Global CEO of Technology for FTI Consulting, Inc. which focuses on e-Discovery and Information Governance Management.

She was formerly the Chief Operating Officer of Strategic Discovery Inc. and the Executive VP of Global Delivery and Operations for Freeborders. She serves on the board of the San Francisco Jewish Community Center. Sophie holds a B.S. from Tel Aviv University and an MBA from Harvard.
