OUR CAMPUSES

HRC is based across two campuses; Broxbourne and Ware. Each course listed in this prospectus specifies which campus it will be based at. Check out our travel guide to find out the fastest travel route to your chosen campus.

Ware Campus

Our Ware campus is home to our Art & Design, Hair & Beauty, Digital and Higher Education creative subjects and our Millbrook Centre –a dedicated environment for students with disabilities and/or difficulties.

Our Inspires Hair and Beauty Salon, where our Hair, Beauty and Media Make-up courses take place, is one of the largest and most advanced salons of any college in the country, open to the public and run by our students.

Students at our Ware campus benefit from fantastic facilities including Apple Mac suites, purpose-built studios fully equipped with the latest high-tech equipment, VR suite and our on-campus exhibition gallery, the David Gentleman gallery.

Broxbourne Campus

Our Broxbourne campus is a larger site housing our STEM facilities, including Engineering, Motor Vehicle, Construction and Electrical workshops, as well as Science laboratories.

Recent investment into Greener Homes initiatives includes our Green Skills Training Centre which offers students the opportunity to learn about the five core renewable technologies - find out more on page 8.

The Broxbourne campus also features the Michael Morpurgo Theatre, TV and Recording Studios, Childcare and Health & Social Care suites, Gym and Sports Hall, VR suite, Business and Apple Mac suites, a JetBlue air cabin and our awardwinning Atrium Restaurant.

Take the Turnford (A1170) exit of the A10; just minutes from the M25 (Junction 25). We have a large car park for student use.

We are keen to make your time at HRC as enjoyable as possible and to give you opportunities for personal development. With that in mind, our Enrichment Programme is designed to support your personal development and may help you gain extra qualifications or access to future further or higher education, or employment.

Join an existing club or start your own! Our students have started a range of clubs including Cross Stitch Club, Walking Club, Garden Club, Gaming Club, Herts Pride and Driving Theory Club.

Extra Curricular Qualifications

If you’re a full-time 16-18-yearold student you can study for a free qualification to boost your CV, including First Aid, Duke of Edinburgh Award, British Sign Language,

National Citizen Service (NCS) and introductory courses to languages including Spanish, French and Italian.

Volunteering and Community Champions

Volunteering and community projects are a great way to feel like you are making a difference to your local area, as well as being something that really stands out to employers. We have been involved in a number of local projects including community garden projects, litter picking and ongoing work with Lea Valley Regional Parks.

Keep Fit

Make use of the Wellness Hub and Fitness Suite* at the Broxbourne campus with a variety of gym equipment, resistance machines and free weights or join one of our sports teams to keep active and make new friends.

Food & Drink

All full-time students and apprentices can enjoy a free breakfast at either campus, available Monday to Friday between 8.15am – 8.45am during term time.

Construction and Motor Vehicle

Over the last twelve months we have put considerable investment into our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) facilities with a strong focus on sustainable energy and Greener Homes initiatives - supporting national, regional and local decarbonisation goals. We strive to put sustainability at the heart of what we do so we are delighted to have been able to add the following resources to our already impressive STEM facilities.

Green Skills Training Centre

Our new Green Skills Training Centre housed within our main Construction block at the Broxbourne Campus offers students the opportunity to learn within a dedicated learning environment, about the five core renewable technologies: Air Source Heat Pumps, Solar Photovoltaic (PV), EV Charging, Battery Energy Storage and Solar Thermal.

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Test Centre

We are now an approved CSCS Test Centre, meaning that our students and wider community can obtain this vital construction site certification at our Broxbourne Campus.

Electric Vehicle Training Rig

With electric vehicles becoming the standard for new cars, our new Electric Vehicle Training Rig will enable HRC students to gain vital hands-on experience of this technology, future-proofing their skills and readying them for their careers.

Art and Design

Our Art and Design facilities have benefitted from significant investment through the Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF). From September 2024 new equipment at our Ware campus includes a 3D Printer, Router, Sewing Machines, Mannequins and a Heat Press print machine. The college has also secured the very latest photography equipment, including top of the range cameras, and industry standard Macbooks for use by students from across our Art and Design programmes.

Childcare and Health and Social Care

RealCare Baby Simulators

Students joining Childcare programmes from September 2024 will benefit from access to a RealCare Baby – the world’s most advanced infant simulator. This unique learning aid is used to teach early childhood and infant health lessons and adds meaning and accountability by using wireless programming to track and report on caregiver behaviours.

omiVista Mobii Magic Table –Interactive Projection System

Used by many care homes as part of the therapeutic care of residents with dementia, this projection system creates an interactive surface at the touch of a button. The table projection system includes a Sensory Suite, a collection of 300 applications with audio-visual effects designed to stimulate, engage and relax – students will learn how to use the system and about the many benefits it can bring to those living with dementia.

Hospital Training Ward

From January 2025 a brand new hospital training ward will be available. Designed to replicate modern hospital facilities the training ward will provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills required for a career within the Health & Social Care sector.

Digital Media

We continue to invest in IT infrastructure, and we are now able to offer access to an extensive range of virtual reality equipment as well as digital media products including Rokoko motion capture suits.

We have qualified careers advisers at HRC who can offer free, confidential and impartial advice to all students. You will also receive career tutorial sessions and you can take part in workshops to:

Learning Support

HRC welcomes students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and aims to provide the most appropriate support to meet their specific needs. We have a Learning Support Team providing support for:

• Visual impairment.

• Specific learning difficulties e.g. dyslexia.

• English and Maths one-toones, small support groups and revision workshops.

FINANCE AT HRC

Our Information Centre Advisers can provide you with information and advice on a range of bursaries, Advanced Learner Loans, childcare support and help with travel costs that may be available to you. Your eligibility will be assessed based on your household income and the course you are enrolled on for the academic year. All bursary funds are subject to funding availability at the time of your application.

Bursaries

16 – 19 Bursary

We offer support to students who are aged 16 –19, to help fund costs towards travel, kit, uniform, materials and essential trips.

19+ Bursary

We offer this bursary for students aged 19+ who need financial support to start or finish their course. It can also help fund college costs, travel and materials.

Advanced Learner Loan Bursary

If you have been approved for an Advanced Learner Loan, we offer support with noncompulsory course-related costs, such as books, travel and childcare. The Advanced Learner Loan Bursary is subject to availability at the time of application.

Higher Education

The majority of students on Higher Education programmes are not required to pay their fees up front but can apply to take out a loan through Student Finance. In order to qualify for Student Finance, including tuition fee loans, you have to satisfy certain requirements, including residency in the UK. Maintenance loans, based on eligibility and household income, are also available from Student Finance.

Help with Childcare Costs

Care to Learn

You can apply to this national scheme for help with childcare costs if you are a young student aged 16 – 20 studying on an eligible course.

20+ Childcare Fund

This provides funding towards the cost of registered childcare for students aged 20+.

Free Meals

Students aged 18 or under may be eligible to receive a free lunchtime meal at college if either they or their family are receiving certain benefits.

Full-time Programmes

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2025, you can study a full-time programme for free. If you are over 19 on 31st August 2025, you may have to pay the fee for your course. Any materials needed for your course, including books, kit, uniform, trips and visits are an additional cost.

If you are aged 19-23 and do not have a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification already, you may be entitled to study for free. If you intend to study a course at Level 3 or above, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan.

STUDY PROGRAMMES

Most of our full-time courses are referred to as Study Programmes and are designed to provide you with a full set of skills to help you reach your next destination, whether that’s employment, further study or an Apprenticeship.

About Study Programmes

With our Study Programmes you will take on:

Locations

The majority of Study Programmes will take place at either our Broxbourne or Ware campus and the campus location is shown next to each course in this prospectus. Some of our courses may take place across different campuses, be available at both campuses or take place off site, so please note the course location as you read through.

English and Maths

If you haven’t achieved your GSCE Level 4 in Maths and English when you enrol with us, you will be able to study to gain these qualifications alongside your main course. We will support you with your English and Maths studies throughout your time with us and give you opportunities to re-sit these exams.

Industry Placement

Many of our Study Programmes involve industry placement, whether through work experience periods or programmes that directly integrate industry placement into the course.

What if I don’t get the results I need?

Ask us, we can help. We hold Advice and Information Days to support you once your GCSE and A Level results are in.

Staff will be on hand to advise what level or course may be most appropriate. This also applies if you’ve done better than you thought you would!

T-LEVELS

T-Levels are an alternative to A-Levels, Apprenticeships and other full-time courses, delivered in conjunction with local and national employers. Equivalent to three A-Levels, T-Levels focus on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher education or Apprenticeships.

T-Level students spend 80% of their course in the classroom, learning the skills that employers need, while the other 20% is a meaningful industry placement, where students are able to put these skills into action.

Each T-Level includes an in-depth industry placement that lasts at least 45 days. Students have the opportunity to obtain valuable experience in the workplace, while employers gain early sight of the new talent in their industry.

INCLUSIVE LEARNING

At HRC we welcome students with disabilities and/or difficulties and aim to provide effective support to help them achieve their goals. Our provision for learners with high needs was rated ‘outstanding’ at our latest Ofsted inspection.

Each student joining HRC has a programme that is fully personalised and based on the areas of learning that are most relevant to their future.

HRC works with local schools to prepare students for successful transition to college, this is supported by Transition Workers where appropriate.

At HRC, students work towards learning new routines, they take part in activities both within the college and in the community, learn how to follow instructions to keep themselves safe and to gradually build up ways to become more independent where possible.

At HRC, areas of learning are split into four themes; Health and Wellbeing, Community Inclusion, Employability Skills/Work Experience and Independent Living. Students are involved in selecting a programme of study that is aspiration appropriate, challenging and contains bespoke tuition.

Students have access to a wide variety of community experiences in leisure and services, work experience placements and vocational options – ensuring that they have a chance to express themselves.

Maths, English and ICT are embedded into all courses, delivery methods dependent on each course level.

In addition to the above, HRC provide a wide range of opportunities for enrichment and sport.

The curriculum is sequenced in such a way to enable students to build upon learnt knowledge and skills with reduced support where appropriate.

HIGHER EDUCATION

Study Higher Education (HE) at HRC and gain a university-level qualification, while benefitting from smaller class sizes and the ability to study locally.

Initial Year for Extended Degrees

Extended Degrees are for students who may not have the right qualifications for their chosen undergraduate programme.

Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)

HNDs focus on building your experience via ‘learning by doing’ opportunities, they are internationally recognised HE qualifications at Level 4 and 5, equivalent to the first and second years of a university degree.

Foundation Degrees

A Foundation Degree is a two year course which gives you a stand-alone qualification with the opportunity to progress onto either the second or final year of a full degree (depending on your results).

Level 6 Top Up

Level 6 Top Up courses allow you to complete your degree programme at HRC following successful completion of a Foundation Degree or HND, in a related subject.

ADULT EDUCATION

At HRC we offer a fantastic range of courses for adults, from professional and technical training courses, to leisure and community learning courses. All our adult courses are taught in our outstanding facilities by expert tutors.

Our Information Team are on-hand to advise you about what you may be entitled to in relation to tuition costs, or what loans you can apply for to cover tuition costs.

Many of our adult courses are either fully-funded or subsidised for those who want to undertake a Level 2 and Level 3 qualification if they don’t already have qualifications at that level.

There are also free courses and concessions for those who are unemployed and on certain benefits, or employed and on a low wage.

SUSTAINABILITY

Hertford Regional College is fully committed to improving its environmental impact. We work closely with local partners to protect our local community and we aspire to having a curriculum offering with sustainability at its heart.

Our five-year Strategic Plan (2022 – 2027) outlines how we are working towards embedding more sustainable working practices in everything that we do, such as how we make decisions and how our activities play a part in creating the changes we need for a more equitable society and sustainable planet.

We are proud of the positive steps that we have already taken. Our newly designed creative recycling courses teach students the skills they need to create something new from something old, while our recent investment in STEM facilities focus on sustainability and greener homes, including training facilities for air source heat pumps, solar panels and electric vehicles. We are especially proud of the amazing projects that our students have undertaken – projects such as our annual Sustainable Fashion Show, showcasing how we are working to incorporate sustainable concepts into our curriculum.

2. Your Interview (if required)

Once we’ve received your application you will be contacted and may be invited for an interview. We’ll provide you with all the information you need about your course and ensure that the level of course you have chosen is the best one for you.

3. Your Offer

We will make you either a conditional or unconditional offer:

Conditional offer

Your entry onto the course will depend on your exam results.

Unconditional offer

Your entry onto the course will be guaranteed as you already have the required qualifications or experience.

4. Your Exam Results

Getting your exam results can mean confusion as well as celebration. We’ll be open for you to come in and discuss your options. Even if you don’t get the results you hope for (or do better than expected!) we’ll do all we can to accommodate you on a course that’s right for you.

5. New Student Day

After we have made you an offer we will invite you to a New Student Day at your campus. This is a fun day that will give you the chance to meet others on your course, get familiar with the college and enjoy a range of activities.

6. Your First Day

By early September you’ll be fully enrolled with HRC and ready to begin your course.

Students on this course will learn a wide range of skills that will support them to work in the travel and tourism industry, including learning about worldwide travel destinations, effective customer service, building interpersonal skills and specific elements of the travel world such as the cruise industry.

Students will also work in partnership with recognised travel companies and organisations who will help them to gain further understanding and work experience within the travel and tourism industry working with partners including Royal Caribbean, ABTA and Travel Counsellors.

The course also features the opportunity for study trips, with previous locations including New York, Krakow, Paris and Lisbon.

Students on this course will learn a wide range of skills that will support them to work in the travel and tourism industry, including understanding promotions and sales campaigns, learning about the tourism sector (both domestic and international) and developing and delivering excellent customer service.

Students will look at units covering the travel and tourism industry, destinations and business environments within which they operate.

Students will also gain transferable knowledge and skills to prepare them for progression to university or work through work experience and working on live briefs within the tourism industry. The course also helps students to work independently, research actively, develop their ability to present and be active members of a team.

Visual Merchandising Level 3

Students on this course will develop a portfolio of work and employability skills as they cover a variety of topics, including creating window displays, prop making, scale drawing, promotion and marketing and interior design.

Students will also learn skills such as critical thinking, communication and self-management which will prove essential to working within the creative industries.

Students will also have opportunities to produce and exhibit their work in purpose built studios, gallery spaces and glazed displays.

This course focuses on developing creative and technical skills which provide a strong foundation for a career in the creative industries.

Students will learn the fundamentals of visual merchandising including display design, spatial design, fashion promotion and styling, customer behaviours, graphic design, marketing, and product promotion and styling.

The course offers high profile live briefs and work placements from leading retail brands, as well as excellent industry feedback, guest speakers, study trips and overseas visits.

Students will also develop expertise in visual merchandising, digital visual merchandising, spatial design and branding practices through a curriculum that explores the design process from conceptualisation through to realisation.

The course also gives students the opportunity to take part in industry live briefs with local community businesses, organisations, groups and head offices as well as prestigious national and international competitions and work placements from leading retail brands.
