ENRICHMENT AT HERTFORD REGIONAL COLLEGE

Student Enrichment at Hertford Regional College

What is Enrichment?

Our Enrichment provision aims to enhance the overall educational experience by offering a diverse range of non-curricular activities alongside your full-time course.

At HRC, we offer a variety of opportunities to enhance your confidence, personal skills, and self-reliance, all skills which are highly valued by employers.

At the beginning of the academic year, we host an annual Freshers Fair, where you can discover all the amazing activities available and meet like-minded students.

So, whether you want to meet new people, improve skills to support your CV or to just have fun, Enrichment at HRC will enhance your college experience!

Benefits of Enrichment Activities

• Improve focus • Critical thinking • Creativity

Improve communication skills

Leadership and teamwork • Stress relief • Increased self-esteem • A sense of belonging

Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a programme which gives young people the chance to make friends, have fun and build confidence in an empowering, exciting and non-competitive learning environment.

At HRC, we offer the Bronze Award which consists of four sections: Volunteering, Skills, Physical and Expedition. Students who sign up will need to create their own DofE programme by finding a volunteering, physical and skills activity of their interest before undertaking a final assessed expedition consisting of an overnight camping trip.

Through participation, you will make new friends, develop social and interpersonal skills, and increase your initiative, independence and self-confidence.

Completion of the DofE gives great sense of achievement, and the award is highly valued by colleges, universities, and employers.

“Completing my DofE has really helped me with confidence, I have learnt a new skill, made some new friends, and would recommend it to anyone. The expedition was the best part as really enjoyed spending time with my friends outside of college.”

Olivia, Level 3 Public Services Student

Leadership and Student Voice

At HRC, students have the opportunity to join a Student Council, become a Student Representative or attend meetings with the Principal’s Focus Group. These groups allow you to build leadership and communication skills, as well as personal growth, contributing to your overall development as a young adult.

Being a part of the Student Council at HRC will develop the your skills and enable you to practice decision making, problem solving and effective communication.

Being a part of the Student Council allows you to meet a diverse group of peers, creating networking opportunities and lasting friendships.

Attending regular meetings across the college will help improve confidence by challenging you to step outside of your comfort zone, take on new responsibilities and develop confidence in your own abilities.

“The student voice is not just about speaking out; it’s about being listened to and making a difference.”

Alfie, Level 3 Business Student

“I initially didn’t think this would be a good fit for me, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’ve spoken on behalf of my class in meetings covering all aspects of college life and even had the opportunity to sit with the principal twice. I’ve also been invited to represent the college in forums with both the Department for Education and OFSTED. This experience has significantly boosted my confidence and enhanced my CV.”

Chloe, Level 2 Art Student

Volunteering and Community Projects

Contributing time and effort to community initiatives and social causes helps students develop a sense of social responsibility, empathy, and a deeper understanding of societal issues.

At HRC, you will have the opportunity volunteer in the local community and join conservation efforts at parks and zoos.

We encourage all students to sign up for any volunteering activities available to them. You will receive a certificate which can then be added to your CV showcasing your commitment, initiative, and diverse experiences to future employers.

Currently we work with Lee Valley Park Volunteering, Whipsnade Zoo, Celtic Harmony, Age Concern, Help the Aged and several local community hubs.

“Helping others through volunteering has not only made me feel good, but it has also opened my eyes to the challenges people face and how I can help make a positive change.”

Archie, Level 2 Construction Student

“Volunteering is great evidence for my CV and future job prospects. I have worked with Age Concern meal service, supported an elderly day centre and am due to go litter picking at Whipsnade Zoo next week.”

Nancy, Level 3 Hair and Beauty Student

Extra Qualifications and Personal Development

Emergency First Aid at Work

Obtaining an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification can provide several benefits for students entering employment:

Confidence in Emergencies

With training in basic first aid techniques like CPR, bandaging, and dealing with burns or choking incidents, you will gain confidence in handling emergencies calmly and effectively.

Employability

Employers value candidates with first aid skills as they contribute to a safer workplace and demonstrate responsibility and preparedness.

Personal Development

Learning first aid skills enhances your personal development by promoting problem-solving abilities, decision-making skills, and the ability to stay calm under pressure, which are valuable in any job role.

Introductory to British Sign Language

Obtaining an introductory Level 1 qualification in British Sign Language (BSL) allows students to communicate effectively with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, breaking down communication barriers:

Career Opportunities

Many job roles across various sectors, such as healthcare, education, customer service, and social services, benefit from employees who can communicate using BSL. Having this skill can open up new career opportunities and enhance employability.

Personal Development

Acquiring a new language like BSL enhances cognitive abilities, memory, and multitasking skills, contributing to your personal development.

Driving Theory Revision Classes

Understanding Road Signs and Symbols

Revising road signs and symbols ensures that you recognise and understand them correctly while driving. This knowledge is essential for following traffic instructions and maintaining road safety.

Reduced Risk of Test Failure

Thorough revision reduces the likelihood of making common mistakes or errors during the test, minimising the risk of failure and the need for retaking the exam.

Preparation for Practical Driving Lessons

A solid understanding of driving theory prepares you for practical driving lessons. It allows you to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world driving scenarios, enhancing your learning experience and progress as a driver.

Learn a Foreign Language

Learning the basics of another language before employment offers numerous benefits that can enhance your career prospects and overall personal development:

Career Opportunities

Learning another language opens doors to job opportunities in international companies and industries where language skills are highly valued. It also enhances your competitiveness in the job market, particularly in fields like tourism, hospitality, and business.

Boosts Confidence and Self-Esteem

Achieving proficiency or fluency in a foreign language boosts self-confidence and self-esteem which are valuable attributes in the workplace.

Trips and Expeditions

At HRC, the Enrichment Team offers a diverse range of trips, including day outings, residential stays, tours, and the DofE expedition.

In 2024, the team organised students a fully funded two-week work experience trip to Seville, Spain. Students were able to develop the skills and confidence needed to secure further education and future employment.

Upcoming opportunities include organising students to travel to Europe to work alongside local communities in the chosen subject they are studying at college.

We also offer a two-day fully funded guided trip to Auschwitz, Poland. The guided tour can prompt students to reflect critically on the events of the Holocaust, the factors that led to it and the consequences of prejudice and discrimination.

“The friendships and memories made on college trips are priceless. They’ve made my college experience truly special.”

Leah, Level 3 Media Make Up Student

“Exploring new environments and meeting people from different backgrounds during college trips has been great, I have learnt about other cultures which has been really interesting.”

Mitch, Level 2 Electrical Student
