Welcome Welcome to your new show-bursting summer brochure.

I’m thrilled to be able to share the programme of arts events and arts activities taking place at Hertford Theatre over the next few months. We always try to make sure that there is something for everyone and this season is no exception. So dig in! But what about some up-coming highlights? Following on from the sell-out success of Gangsta Granny and prior to its West End run, the brilliant Birmingham Stage Company are back with their hilarious Horrible Histories; the mesmeric James Taylor Quartet will be hitting the stage, as will the giant dinosaurs in Dinosaur World Live! (we can’t wait!) and for theatrebuffs, We Are The Lions, Mr Manager is the brilliant story of Jayaben Desai,

THEATRE

Vamos Theatre: the inspirational leader of the 197678 Grunwick Film Processing Factory Strike; a remarkable, inspiring story. Hertford Theatre is a beacon for the arts across the district of East Herts and I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to those of you who have bought tickets in the past and a big ‘hello’ to those of you who I am sure will buy a ticket or two for the first time this season. But the theatre is not just for shows and films, why not pop in for a coffee? Treat yourself or the kids to a class? Or do a spot of work in our bright and airy foyer? We’d love to see you here. Enjoy your new brochure and happy picking! Rhys Thomas Director

Training is complete, combat is a buzz; he’s part of a team, and knows his job. But on one particular hot and desperate tour of duty, Ryan sees things he can’t talk about, to anyone. And then, when he returns home, the trouble really begins.

Following James Hurn’s sell-out tour of 2017, he is back by popular demand with his stunning one-man, many voices, show, celebrating over 60 years of Hancock’s Half Hour.

Climate change is massive. Bees aren’t. “A rarity… deliciously eccentric” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian Our fuzzy little friends need our help and so we’re launching a political party disguised as a party party disguised as a show.

The new show is performed in the style of a radio performance in front of a live audience, bringing to life the classic days of radio comedy.

The Upbeat Beatles Friday 11th May, 8pm As the name suggests The Upbeat Beatles are a rockin’ band with tight musicianship and powerhouse vocals! You’ll be jumping from the word go! There isn’t a band to touch them - 8 bars of “Twist and Shout” and you will know why! No other band performs this song like the Upbeat Beatles!

Kathy Lette’s Girls’ Night Out

Richard Herring Oh Frig, I’m 50!

Friday 25th May, 7.45pm “Women are each other’s human wonder bras – uplifting, supportive and making each other look bigger and better.” So says Kathy Lette, funny, feminist author, who invites you to her new show, Girls’ Night Out.

Thursday 24th May, 8pm “I only regret the people I didn’t have sex with….. And 60% of the people I did have sex with.” “Podfather” (the Guardian) and star of Radio 4’s Relativity, Richard Herring gets to the half century (against all odds) and looks at how his life has changed in the last decade, from irresponsible, single kidult, literally fighting his way through a mid-life crisis, to married father who is mid-way to the telegram from the Queen (though given she will be 140 in 2067 , she might forget to send it).

It’s a psychological strip tease taking us from Puberty Blues to Menopause Blues, with tales of love, lust, men, marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, mastitis, sexist bosses, teenage-daughter-wrangling, ageing, toy boys, making the Queen laugh, hiding Julian Assange in her attic, tongue kissing Prince William and Close Encounters of the George Clooney Kind, en route.

“A gloriously infantile delight in mischief, provocation and inspired rudeness” The Guardian £18.50 Approx 2hrs Suitable for ages 15+ Live comedy contains strong language and adult topics.

Alistair Barrie & Geoff Norcott

Edinburgh Previews

Thursday 12th July, 8pm Hertford’s very own Alistair returns with his new show, fresh from Melbourne Festival, before a run at The Edinburgh Fringe, where he has twice been nominated for ‘Best Show’. According to The Guardian, ‘no one does righteous indignation with the same brio as Barrie’ – and right now he’s got plenty to be indignant about. Expect Brexit, Trump, #metoo, fatherhood and the ridiculous number of hairdressers in his adopted home town.

Simon Evans Genius

Friday 29th June, 8pm Ever since he was a small boy, all Evans really wanted was to be recognised by the world as a man of genius. He has, until now, remained thwarted. The world seems increasingly indifferent to true genius of any kind, let alone Evans’. Endlessly distracted by the trivial, we allow the classical tools of grammar, logic and rhetoric to lie unregarded in the shed of consciousness, rusting to a picturesque hue that would actually look really great on Instagram. “A masterclass in socio-political comedy…The Show is called Genius. It comes very close” The Scotsman

Resident Classes From the Studio

A cycle of paintings by Stephen Hough 8th – 17th June

Return Of The Muse Rose Gooding, Peggy Quinn, Maureen Masterman 24th April – 20th May

This exhibition reunites three friends who studied art together at Oaklands College in St Albans.

On display at Herford Theatre throughout the festival, From the Studio brings together a selection of recent paintings by this year’s resident artist Stephen Hough. The intimate display focuses on a range of new works on grease paper, complemented by a selection of paintings on canvas.

Paintings

24th April – 20th May

George’s favourite media is painting in oils, which, in itself, offers a wide scope for experimenting. She has been creating paintings of a surreal nature, which often were a reflection of turbulent emotional moments, amongst her abstract and her figurative work. Art and Music help define both of their lives. Our gallery is managed by Courtyard Arts. To exhibit, please email Peer Tower on gallerymanager@courtyardarts.org.uk.
