STUDY TO BECOME A SKILLED FARMER
The Agricultural Education

The Agricultural Education

Studying to become a skilled Farmer is a combination of training in school and practical training at a farm.

LIVING AT THE SCHOOL

The education provides you with basic knowledge of both livestock and agriculture. As you advance in your studies, you'll specialize in either livestock (pigs or cows) or plant production.

Technology and innovation are focal points at Agroskolen. You will learn how technology is used in agriculture, and work with machines and technology – more importantly, you'll learn to think and work innovatively.

As a skilled farmer, you'll be able to work as an employee or as an independent farmer.

Upon completion of your training as a skilled farmer, you can further your studies in agricultural leadership. You can choose to study to become a production leader or Agricultural economist.

PRACTICAL TRAINING

Once you have finished and passed the basic course, you must complete an internship with practical training. There is a high demand for skilled agricultural students, so finding a good internship is likely. We would be happy to assist you in this process.

You also have the opportunity to do one or multiple internships overseas.

International experience is a sought-after skill by many employers. In addition to this, international experiences can provide invaluable life experiences, develop your independence, and give you insights into other cultures. At Agroskolen, we have good contacts with farmers abroad and would be glad to assist you in finding the right internship.

Most of our Danish students choose to live at the school while studying, and we would be delighted to welcome you.

At Agroskolen, we encourage all our students to live at the school as it fosters close relationships with your peers.

Ensuring that you feel at home while away from home is a top priority for us. We have many planned extracurricular activities throughout the week, such as football, pool, badminton, workshop activities, cinema, paintball, go-kart, etc.

In collaboration with LandboUngdom, the Danish agricultural youth organization, we organize visits that offer ample opportunities to make new friends and learn new things.

HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE AND NIGHT WATCH

If you need help with your homework, we offer assistance.

A teacher is available to help with homework from 15.10 pm to 16.00 pm every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

There is an evening watch at the school from Monday to Thursday, from 17.30 pm to 23.00 pm.

From 23.00 pm until the next morning, there is a night watch, ensuring you can always get in contact with an adult.

The cost of living at the school is DKK 575 per week. If you wish to eat at the school but live off-campus, the cost is DKK 250 per week.

PRODUCTION LEADER

If you want an education in leadership while having a career, this is the program for you.

If you are educated as a skilled farmer, you have the opportunity to further your studies and become a production leader.

You can continue the first level of the leadership education as a production leader and then study to become an agricultural economist.

In the leadership program, you will get the opportunity to focus on both agricultural knowledge and business management. The subjects include economy, strategic planning, and personnel policy leadership in agriculture and businesses.

Becoming a production leader is aimed at those intending to lead in agriculture, while becoming an agricultural economist opens opportunities for working in sales, counseling, and business leadership.

The agricultural leadership education is for those who will run and take responsibility for a production line on a farm, want to become an independent business owner, and/or want to develop themselves and their staff along with the business.

EU STUDENTS Admission Requirements

The academic requirement to study is as follows:

• You must, at a minimum, have completed primary or lower secondary school.

• You must have passed your native language and math.

• You must have finished basic school at least 1 year ago or have completed the first basic course.

If you have not been able to meet the above requirements, there is a possibility of an entrance exam and interview that will allow us to assess if we can admit you to the program.

While it's not an academic requirement, the ability to understand, speak, and write in English is essential.

As an EU student, you may have different curriculums from your prior schooling. Some students may have done further studies, which allow them to be exempted from certain subjects. Some might have a driver's license, which exempts them from having to get a tractor driving license. Therefore, the length of the study period varies.

All student competency assessments are conducted individually.

STATE EDUCATIONAL GRANT AND LOAN SCHEME

In Denmark, young people from the age of 18 are entitled to receive public support (SU) when studying. As you are not a Danish citizen, you have to meet and fulfill certain conditions and requirements.

To apply for a student grant (SU), you must work a minimum of 10-12 hours per week while studying. We can assist you with contacts, but the responsibility of both finding and keeping a paid job throughout the study period is entirely yours. The student grant will not be granted if you do not meet the requirements. The grant is given during your school stay on the basic course and if you are above 18 years.

Once you've received notice of being admitted to our program, you can apply for SU one month before beginning the basic course. The application for SU is to be completed by you, not by the school. For further information, please visit www.su.dk/english

Here's an example of how SU is granted to foreign students:

Starting your agricultural education at Agroskolen means you must apply for an EU residence document since you will be living and studying in Denmark for at least six months.

We will accompany you and your classmates to the State Administration to apply for the residence document. Therefore, you must have all your updated personal documents with you.

The application process typically takes 1-3 weeks.

Once you have received your registration certificate, you will need to contact the Municipality Citizen Services to get a civil registration number (CPR Number) and a health security card (Det gule sygesikringskort).

An Italian student travels to Denmark in July 2023. On the 26th of July, he secures a job working 10 hours each week with a salary of DKK 115 per hour. From the 1st of September 2023, he begins his studies and applies for SU. We approve SU eligibility as a worker under EU law starting from September. From this point onwards, he is entitled to receive SU as long as he is studying and working a minimum of 10-12 hours per week.

WHY CAN'T I GET SU AFTER THE BASIC COURSE?

After completing the basic course, you will begin your farm internship. During the internship, you will receive a trainee salary. This salary is also given in the subsequent school periods as it is part of the education agreement with the farmer.

The health security card (Det gule sygesikringskort) provides you with free healthcare in Denmark.

NEW AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL

You will begin your education at our school in Hammerum, just outside Herning... BUT come the 1st of August 2025, you will be among the first students to use the new school facilities at the Campus area of Herningsholm Erhvervsskole & Gymnasier in Herning.
