President shares first Convention experience

By EUGENE ZOLLINGER President and CEO Fresh off my first Hermann Sons Life Convention Assembly, I wanted to write an article to share several thoughts and feelings . I had a wonderful time meeting so many more members and those who have been so active in growing and strengthening our organization over the years! There were many conversations I had with members about fond memories, improving our organization and just getting to know them and their families better . I want to thank Samantha Schulmeier Kelley and Cecily Kelly for serving as the Convention cochairs and doing a fantastic job! The food, entertainment, format, etc . were outstanding! I also want to thank the rest of the Home Office staff for all the work and long hours they put in on everyone’s behalf . I really enjoyed the Convention and I now have a much better understanding of it and why it’s so important to our organization . I’ve included the speech I gave at the Convention so everyone who was not there has an opportunity to know what I shared . “Good morning everyone, it’s an honor and privilege to be stand-

ing in front of you today as the President and CEO of our amazing organization . Obviously, this is my first Conven- Eugene Zollinger tion and it’s been great getting to meet more of our members and hearing your stories of legacy, commitment, and loyalty to our organization . “I appreciate all the support that not only the Board of Directors and the Executive Team has given me but also you as members . Every lodge meeting, Christmas party, pin presentation and dance recital I have been to, I have felt welcome and embraced, and so has my family . That is so important, and I hope that is the case with everyone who interacts with our members at every lodge meeting and event that we hold . After all, Friendship, Love and Loyalty are our hallmarks . “Hopefully you’ve all had a chance to review my report in the Book of Reports by now, and not only mine but the Board report as well as those from the Executive Team and committees .

These are extremely important in understanding the progress and changes that have occurred and our plans for the future . If you haven’t had a chance to read it, I encourage you to make time after the Convention to do so . I want to commend the Board of Directors, the Executive Team and the committees for all of the work they have each not only put in for their reports, but for our organization . “With regards to the committees, there will be a refresh of them after the Convention and an opportunity for new committee members to join, so please be aware of that and I will be sending out further communication afterward . “I think we can all agree that there has been a lot of necessary work and changes ongoing, not only since the last Convention, but since I came on board just over three years ago . “As you read through my report, you’ll see that the focus of the changes has been in the areas of Information Technology (IT), Sales and Marketing structures, Marketing initiatives and campaigns, and facility upgrades . The highlights and details of each of those areas are explained in the report and I encourage you to review them .

Decisions will always be made to do what is best for the organization, the employees and the members . “I want to end with something I said in the 'Behind the Scenes' corporate documentary, 'At Hermann Sons Life we celebrate history and the amazing organization that our forefathers have worked so hard to form over the past 160 years and to make sure we are here for the next 160 years we need to make sure we remain relevant in all the communities we serve and represent throughout the state of Texas . We want our members to recognize we are here to help them build sound financial futures and to build a better world where everyone feels included .’ “I have the vision and strategies to make sure that happens and I’ll count on everyone’s support to help us get there .”

Retirement Home Resident expresses gratitude for donations COMFORT – Retirement Home resident Billie DeSalme recently expressed her appreciation for the support received during the Chili and Bean Cook-off fundraiser at the Home. “I’m Billy the Kid. Some of you may recognize me from the Chili Cook-off held at the Hermann Sons Life Retirement Home in March. I would like to thank all who came and participated in the bean and chili contests,” she said. “My heart was filled with joy when I saw how many came and supported the Retirement Home cook-off after being down for two years. My sidekick Glenn Hellums and I walked around selling goods out of the wagon and asking for donations for the scholarships. Each and everyone of you opened your hearts, purchased goods and donated very generously. When we went to count our

By ROBIN CZARNEK Vice President of Sales If you’re like me, you may be wondering what is going on in our world. It seems like every day there is another tragedy and more violence on the news. Thankfully, we need only look around to see that there is still a lot of good. My husband David and I recently had the pleasure of attending the Hermann Sons Life School of Dance recitals in New Braunfels. What a blessing that was! Not only was it a great reminder of why I do what I do, but it was also beautiful to see all the lives positively impacted by our Hermann Sons Life community. So many people put their hearts and souls into making these dance lessons and recitals happen…dance teachers, parent liaisons, our Member Benefits team and so many more. Seeing the bright faces of our children dancing their hearts out is such a lovely way to experience the good our world has to offer. I was particularly impressed with the dance teachers behind the scenes. While many didn’t have the vantage point we had, we were able to see the teachers hiding behind curtains doing the dances with their dancers in case they forgot their steps once they saw the sea of faces in the audience and the nerves kicked in. I couldn’t help but get emotional because it just shows how much these teachers care about our children to be there for them and do routine after routine alongside them with most in the audience none the wiser. When you look around, there is so much good behind the scenes. May was a big month for Hermann Sons Life. We held our 48th Convention Assembly in San Mar-

cos. Many of us from both the Home Office and Advisory Committees gave our reports on the state of our organization, as well as voting on our new Board of Directors. Perhaps every bit as important was the fellowship and community present at Convention. When one of our own lodge members fell ill, others went to make sure she was okay. Lodges discussed getting together to join forces and make service projects happen. John Kelly (Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly’s husband) was always visible running around and helping, not to mention etching the beautiful vases for the banquet tables. Old friends were catching up and so many new friends were made. Thousands of dollars and numerous donations were raised for the Greater San Marcos Youth Council. May we always work to keep the fraternal spirit alive. While the world around us is chaotic, there is a special community found in Hermann Sons Life. The pandemic did its best to keep us apart, but we’re coming back together again and it’s wonderful! We’ve all heard that saying, “It takes a village.” We are that village and we can be for others too. Invite your friends to a lodge meeting or event, host a community event with your lodge, hold an office and keep attending those lodge meetings. When our 49th Convention comes around, we’ll need delegates, as well as candidates to run for the Board of Directors. You are what makes Hermann Sons Life special! I hope that you’ll join me by getting involved to make a difference!

It’s crunch time for summer camp paperwork! By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director Welcome to the business end of summer camp! Camp opens this month and there’s some paperwork that needs tending to! We really need our parents to complete their camper’s Health History Form, Activity Selection Form and the Dorm Assignment and Check-Out Form as soon as possible. Please don’t wait until the last minute or it could affect your child’s preferences. I’ve already begun the process of bunking campers who have their Health Forms completed – placing them in the top or bottom bunk of their choice, placing them in dorms with the friends they requested (if their friends have their forms submitted). Arrival day We will be emailing parents dorm assignments and their scheduled arrival times five-seven days before Camp begins. Each cabin will be scheduled a 45-minute arrival window between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Campers without the Health History Form on file will be scheduled to arrive between 4-5 p.m. and will be assigned a bunk upon their arrival. Like last summer, we will be asking parents not to leave their vehicle on arrival day. The rolling drop-off really works for the campers and staff and based on the surveys the parents liked it too! Please do not bring RVs and trailers with you. We simply do not have the capacity to handle these vehicles on arrival day. Also on arrival day, we ask that you bring any prescription medication in its original container. Please compete the Medication Form and bring it with you. Hermann Sons Life App Have you downloaded the Hermann Sons Life App? This is the only way you will be able to email

your child during their stay. You will also be able to view Camp photos taken throughout the summer. (See directions to the right). Facebook and YouTube I highly recommend following Hermann Sons Life on Facebook and YouTube. During the summer, we’ll be posting unique content on these two platforms for our parents to enjoy. We have been feverishly working to make this summer the best it possibly can be for your kiddos. We’re changing the program this year to provide our campers with more choices in their summer camp experience and help them better enjoy their adventure. Fishing, kayaking, along with the addition of golf at the Riverside site will provide more wonderful, fun memories. We’ve added more lawn games along with GaGa to give our campers a fun change of pace. Crafts has been enhanced this summer on Riverside. In addition to leathercraft, ceramics, lanyards, beading and friendship bracelets, we’ve added tie dying and ceramic tile mosaics for more colorful and fun elective afternoon activities. Our staffing looks fantastic and I’m excited. We have an incredible number of returning counselors (especially on Riverside). Our staff started arriving May 20! Supplementing our wonderful returning staff this summer will be counselors from England, Australia, Scotland, Wales, Mexico, Germany, Columbia, Mexico, Chile and Brazil. I have spoken to these wonderful young men and women, and they are very excited to be here and are looking forward to working with our campers and staff. It’s exciting that the campers and staff will get to hear about the different cultures from around the world, learn a few new games (cricket, rugby, netball) and maybe pick up a new accent!

I highly recommend following Hermann Sons Life on Facebook and YouTube. During the sum- mer, we’ll be posting unique content on these two platforms for our parents to enjoy. We have been feverishly working to make this summer the best it possibly can be for your kid- dos. Crafts has been enhanced this summer on Riv- erside. In addition to leathercraft, ceramics, lan- yards, beading and friendship bracelets, we’ve added tie dying and ceramic tile mosaics for more colorful and fun elective afternoon activi- ties. Our staffing looks fantastic and I’m excited. We have an incredible number of returning coun- selors (especially on Riverside). Our staff started arriving May Supplementing our wonderful returning staff this summer will be counselors from England, Australia, Scotland, Wales, Mexico, Germany, Co- lumbia, Mexico, Chile and Brazil. I have spoken to these wonderful young men and women, and they are very excited to be here and are looking forward to working with our campers and staff. It’s exciting that the campers and staff will get to hear about the different cultures from around the world, learn a few new games (cricket, rug- by, netball) and maybe pick up a new accent!
