Join Hands Day Convention project raises funds for San Marcos Youth Council

SAN MARCOS – More than $6,000 was raised for the Greater San Marcos Youth Council (GSMYC) during the Hermann Sons Life Convention Assembly held in San Marcos May 9-12.

GSMYC shelters abused and neglected children and provides children and their families access to prevention programs.

Donations were made by individual members, lodges, the Home Office and the Sales Department held a raffle to raise funds during the convention. Items for the children at the shelter were also collected.

“This is such an important cause,” Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said. “Since May 7 was Join Hands Day, we wanted to do something special in the city of San Marcos during our stay,” she said. “I can’t think of a better program that not only helps children recover but helps families with prevention as well.”

Donors included Ron and Darlene Jones, Agnes Dreibrodt, Jeff Andersen Jr., Karen and Stan Steiger, Ray and Debbie Pfefferkorn, Laura and Wayne Tiffin, Debbie and Don Jordan, Letty Fragoso and Rebecca Henley.

Lodges who made donations included Castroville, Marion, Fort Worth, Austin, Niederwald, Shelby, Mission-Alamo, Boerne, Anton Wenzel, Bandera, Dallas, Jackson County, Spring Branch, Vineta, Moulton, Cat Spring, Poth, Pershing, Seguin, Lone Oak and Rutersville.

The Sales Department raised $1,590 raffling off a wooden flag with the pledge of allegiance inscribed on it. The flag was made by David Czarnek, husband of Vice President of Sales Robin Czarnek. The winner was Pat Wolf of Wichita Falls Lodge.

“During his down time during COVID, David was able to hone his craftsman skills and taught himself to use a CNC machine to do the inscriptions. The flag is made of oak veneer and finished off with oak trim,” Robin said. “We are just so grateful for all the support.” The Sales Department raffled off a wooden U.S. flag with the pledge of allegiance inscribed on it during the Convention Assembly and raised $1,590. Bexar makes blankets for Linus Project

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar Lodge hosted a blanket-making party for Join Hands Day on May 7. The project benefits Project Linus, an organization that strives to provide comfort and security to traumatized and ill children by providing handmade blankets to them.

The event was held at the MacArthur High School cafeteria and members joined hands with students in making nosew fleece blankets. With the help of 25 volunteers from both the lodge and MacArthur High School, 25 blankets were made and donated.

The lodge’s event was featured on San Antonio Kens 5 News that has helped boost the name of Project Linus and its cause.

This is the second year the lodge has hosted this event and had more volunteers participate this year.

The lodge plans to hold the project annually using its special slogan to promote it to the community: “If you can tie a knot, you can tie a blanket for a child in need.”

HONDO LODGE presented a donation of $150 to the Medina County Food Pantry on April 25 for its Join Hands Day project. Kypfer-Salge has new juniors

CLEAR SPRINGS – Kypfer-Salge Lodge welcomed new junior members at the May 6 meeting. CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge will meet at Hilltop Community Center, 11425 Leopard St., at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 7.

A short business meeting is planned and will include discussion of final plans for the August party.

The May meeting was held at Miller Barbecue. In observance of Join Hands Day, members handed out hygiene product bags to the needy on May 6 and May 13.

Delegates Cheryl Garcia, Kerry Ginn and Ida Blankenship attended the Convention Assembly in San Marcos May 9-12 and will give their report at the next meeting.

It was reported the Easter egghunt was a success.

Wishes for a speedy recovery were sent to Megan Rosas.

The lodge recognized Havynn Carrillo who is graduating from Mathis High School.

Birthday celebrant Shalynda Carrillo was recognized as well as anniversary celebrants Dewayne and Shelly Hunt.

The door prize winners were Paul Hood, Shelly Hunt and Myrtle Blumberg. The 50/50 split-the-pot winner was Myrtle Blumberg.

Cat Spring donates to youth council

CAT SPRING – Cat Spring Lodge will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 9. Members will provide sandwiches, chips and/ or desserts.

Regional Sales Manager Douglas Carpenter attended the March meeting and spoke about sales and recruiting agents.

Marge Michaelis, Nila Klaus, Nola Landua, Fay Johnson and Lewellen Gross have received 70-year membership pins. Pin presentations will be held at the annual Christmas meeting and social.

Pat Klotz attended the 48th Convention Assembly held in San Marcos. Herbert and Laura Schumann from Bellville Lodge also attended.

For Join Hands Day, the lodge donated to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council. More than $5,000 was donated during the convention.

A moment of silence was observed for Dennis Landua who has passed away.

The lodge recognized anniversary celebrants Alice and Lewellen Gross, 62 years, and birthday celebrants Alice Gross and Nathan Zanek.

Members enjoyed a soup supper provided by Marsha Tipp, Marilyn Nelson and Pat Klotz. Members provided desserts. – Reporter

Bexar to hold Splash Party on June 25

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar Lodge invites members to the Summer Splash Party on June 25 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Universal City Splash Pad. It is free to the public but be sure to bring money for raffle tickets. This year’s prizes include a gardening gift basket, a tie-dye craft kit and an ice cream making kit. There will also be lots of games, a watermelon eating contest and a lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs.

For Join Hands Day on May 7, the lodge hosted a blanketmaking party to benefit Project Linus. The event was held at the MacArthur High School cafeteria and members joined hands with students in making no-sew fleece blankets. SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge will meet on June 7. Location will be announced by email.

The Annual Family Picnic will be held on July 9 at Zorn Bowling Lanes beginning at 2 p.m. Hosting will be Betty and Clifford Rust and John and Betty Schawe. A sausage dinner will be served, and members are asked to provide side dishes and desserts.

The lodge welcomed new member Marley Marks at the May meeting held at Golden Corral in New Braunfels. Members enjoyed visiting for the second time since meetings were stopped due to COVID.

The Cheer Committee sent get-well cards to Florence McQuaig, Clifford Rust and Scott Krackau.

It was reported members Peggy Schmeltekopf and Jo Ann Hall De La Rosa have passed away.

In honor of Armed Forces Day on May 21, Billy Preuss was recognized for his service in the Army.

Esther Schmidt celebrated her 97th birthday on May 5.

All mothers in attendance were recognized and the winners of mini-rose plants were Janet Boehringer and Yvonne Reimers Robbins.

Hochheim-Prairie presents a senior scholarship to Smith

YOAKUM – Hochheim-Prairie Lodge will meet Sunday, June 12. The lodge welcomed junior member Hudson Baker at the May meeting.

In observance of Join Hands Day, the lodge presented a donation to the Yoakum Volunteer Fire Department.

Plans were made to observe Flag Day on Sunday, June 12.

The lodge’s scholarship recipient is Kirsten Smith. She is the daughter of Julie Smith and Derrick Smith. She will be attending Texas Lutheran University in the fall.

Debbie Zinke was the attendance-prize winner. In honor of Armed Forces Day on May 21, San Marcos Lodge member Billy Preuss was recognized for his service in the Army at the May meeting. San Marcos Lodge winners of the special Mother’s Day prizes of mini-rose plants at the May meeting were Janet Boehriger and Yvonne Reimers Robbins.

Vineta will hold potluck

SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will serve a salad potluck meal at the June 2 meeting. Members are asked to bring a salad or dessert of their choice.

The lodge is asking members to donate school supplies for the 2022-2023 school year. Members should bring the supplies to lodge meetings, and they will be presented to a school in the San Antonio School District in August.

The lodge welcomes new junior member, Dylan Grace Cole.

Members enjoyed dinner from Little Italy in May to celebrate Mother’s Day. Thank you to Beth Byron for delivering the food from Little Italy and to Darlene Ackerman for bringing the cake. All the mothers received a rose.

NEW BRAUNFELS – New Braunfels Lodge met Sunday, May 1, and welcomed nine new members.

A resolution of respect was read for Arvin Brehm, Janice Friesenhahn, Betty Ormond and Lloyd Pape.

Members sang Happy Birthday to celebrants Dave and Robin Czarnek who also recently celebrated their 31st anniversary.

Attendance-prize winners were Delbert Tanneberger, Dennis Schwab, Leona Stolte, Shirley Huebinger, C.J. Schneider, Karen Harborth, Jolene Meuret, Dorothy Schneider, Sandra Guenther, Jerome and Virginia Vetter and Connie Krause.

CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge will meet June 2 at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Pat Booker Road. Barbecued brisket will be served, and members are asked to bring sides and desserts.

The lodge will celebrate Flag Day on June 14 at Cibolo City Hall at 9 a.m. and all are welcome to attend.

At the May meeting, Jack Steers and Lynn Poole from Quilts of Valor were in attendance. The lodge has selected Quilts of Valor for its Matching Funds recipient this year. The group hand makes quilts for veterans. The local group meets at the Cibolo Grange Hall on the first, second and fourth Fridays of the month and are always looking for help. They will teach anyone who wants to learn how to sew and for those who do not wish to sew, they need help cutting out fabric.

Quilts of Valor started in 2003 by Catherine Roberts when her son Nat was at Walter Reed Army Hospital. She felt he was getting depressed and decided to make him a quilt to comfort him. He loved it, and it did lift his spirits. Catherine now had a vision. She saw that the quilts were healing and decided to make more quilts and to get others involved.

There is only one group in San Antonio, the Military City Quilters, and they currently have 108 people on the state list for a quilt and an additional 21 on the referred list. It takes more than two years to fill a request. There are thousands of volunteers across the country and Canada making and presenting Quilts of Valor and have awarded more than 300,677 quilts to veterans. Lodge members handed out flowers to the Cibolo dancers at their recital on May 22 held at Jackson Auditorium at Texas Lutheran University.

Gail Gray and Cory Rakowitz were the adult attendance-prize winners and Jameson Rakowitz was the junior attendance-prize winner.

Joy and Jonny Brown made fresh green beans that were voted the best side dish and Cory Rakowitz made a buttermilk pie that was voted best dessert.

Dorothy Schneider won the Mother’s Day Bath and Bodyworks gift card.

Helotes Lodge delegates attend Convention

Boerne Lodge hosts speaker in May

BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet at noon on Friday, June 3, at Kronkosky Place. Please call the center by 9 a.m. to make your lunch reservation.

At the May meeting, Jean Carr, president of the Genealogical Society of Kendall County, was the guest speaker. She urged lodge members to visit the Family History Place in Boerne to research their family histories. Volunteers are available to help beginners research their family tree. Resources available at the Family History Place include a research library, a free computer center and electronic genealogy databases for research.

The lodge welcomes new junior members, Jill and Garsyn Slayton.

Condolences go out to the family of Burke Hanibal. A memorial will be made to the Retirement Home. A project for Join Hands Day was discussed and members agreed to make monetary donations to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council in San Marcos and to the Meals on Wheels program at Kronkosky Place in Boerne.

Three high school seniors were chosen to receive lodge scholarships. The scholarships will be presented at the June 3 meeting.

Marilyn Vogt read correspondence from Riley Titsworth, Keira Sawyer and Gage Bates thanking the lodge for its donation to the Kendall County Junior Livestock Show held in January.

Congratulations to May anniversary celebrants Kathy and Bobby Kunz.

Jean Carr was a guest speaker at the May meeting of Boerne Lodge. She spoke on the Family History Place and its services for genealogy research.

OLD GLORY – Old Glory Lodge President Diane Smith presented membership pins at the May meeting to Brenda Vahlenkamp, 50 years; Odene Dudensing, 60 years and Darrell Richard, 50 years.

Celebrating birthdays in May were Susan Kittley and Don Pyron. Marvin and Brenda Vahlenkamp celebrated an anniversary. Terry Letz won the door prize. He cooked hamburgers for the meal while games were played. There was an assortment of desserts in honor of Mother’s Day. Darrell Richard provided homemade ice cream. Brenda Vahlenkamp made a special Butterfinger sponge cake and Michael Pyron made a Bailey’s Irish Cream Cheesecake. Michael lives in Abilene and makes these cakes for special occasions.

Happy Mother’s Day wishes were extended to all moms and special recognition went to three sisters, Anita Dozier, Verlene Corzine, Betty Weise and their sisterin-law Gladys Vahlenkamp.

Fried chicken will be the main course for the June meeting and members are asked to bring dessert and side dishes.

Pershing Lodge welcomes new members

SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge welcomes new members Julian Carl Ginder and Olivia Margaret Ginder.

The lodge will meet June 1 at 7 p.m. Members will celebrate Father’s Day and po’boy sandwiches are on the menu.

Hot dogs and bingo games are planned for the July 6 meeting. Members are reminded to RSVP for all meals by calling the office at 210-227-3085.

Chaplain Tony Valek reported the passing of Billie Brittingham, Elvin Bryan Murray, Patricia Ann Spaeth and Lorene B. Tabberer.

Emily and Kenneth Wallace received their 50-year membership pins. They both have been members since Jan. 5, 1972.

Celebrating birthdays in April were Sharon Mainz and Andrew Janowski Jr. and in May, Kenneth Wallace. They each received a birthday prize.

Betty Opiela won the $35 attendance prize and the splitthe-pot drawing. – Dorothy Pawlik Pershing Lodge members and volunteers helped set up chairs for one of the San Antonio Fiesta parades held in April. They included Pat Lane-Plouch, Bonnie Cypert, Becky Sublett, Beth Warne, Derek Wenzel, Dale Wenzel, Alice Golla, Ron Plouch, Roxanne Wenzel, Savannah Espinoza, Mark Napier and Liz Napier. Door prize winners at the May meeting of the Niederwald Lodge were Catherine Blackard and Joe Hennig. Monetary donations of $200 each will be given to Niederwald Cemetery, the Greater San Marcos Youth Council and Ebenezer Lutheran Church Building Fund in honor of Join Hands Day. The next meeting is Tuesday, June 7.

Kerrville Lodge to meet June 1

KERRVILLE – Kerrville Lodge will meet on June 1 at the Hill Country Veterans Center, 411 Meadowview Lane, with sandwiches, chips and fresh fruit on the menu.

Meetings will be held at the Hill Country Veterans Center going forward unless otherwise noted. Call Juanice Grona at 830-864-4095 if you have questions or concerns.

At the April meeting it was decided to provide a flag for K’Star, a non-profit counseling center, for Flag Day. Details for the Flag Day ceremony will be finalized at the June meeting.

Members also discussed the Convention Assembly. Scott Shoemaker served as delegate.

ROUND TOP – Round Top Lodge welcomed new member Reign Bailon and transfer members Ray and Susie Ullrich at the April meeting.

Members expressed their sympathy for the passing of Wanda Borgstead.

Agent Linda Mattocks will be attending the awards banquet in Fredericksburg June 3-4 and continuing education classes in Comfort on Sept 9-10. She reported the Home Office is upgrading its policy administration system and the Sales Department is working on expanding agents to West and North Texas.

Lila Garlin attended the Convention Assembly held in San Marcos May 9-12.

A discussion was held on the annual country store fund-raiser and the possibility of holding it with the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department feast on July 17.

Members were encouraged to support the Waldeck Church picnic scheduled for May 22. Lana Limmer and Mary Rauch had tickets available.

Happy Birthday greetings went to Bob Porter and Mert Meinkowsky.

Attendance-prize winners were Ted and Margie Stardig, Mary Rauch, Linda Mattocks and Floyd Braun.

Ted and Margie Stardig said they recently enjoyed a visit to the Home Office in San Antonio.

Thank you to Linda Mattocks and the new Serving Committee of Ted and Margie Stardig, Barton and Lila Garlin, Kay Von Minden, Randy Wied and Cordell Levien for the barbecued sausage meal with all the trimmings and to the members who provided desserts. Appreciation was also extended to the outgoing Serving Committee of Virgie Hall, Floyd and Jocie Braun and Linda Mattocks.

The next meeting was scheduled for May 26.

Brenham to hold plate sale June 12

BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge will hold a benefit drive-through plate sale on Sunday, June 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal will include barbecued chicken, sausage, buttered potatoes and pinto beans. Cost is $15 per plate. Tickets must be purchased in advance from lodge members. Members are reminded volunteers will be needed to help serve.

Proceeds from the event will be used to support Boys State, Hospice of Brazos Valley, Bread Partners of Washington County and for hall repairs.

The meal for the June 10 meeting will be hamburgers with trimmings and chips. Members are asked to bring desserts.

Lodge officers met May 3 to discuss updating the lodge hall rental agreement. There will be a slight increase in the hall rental fee and changes were made to policies for use of the bar and other facilities.

Thursday night bingo games continue to be successful. Cards go on sale at 6:15 p.m. and games start at 7 p.m. and are usually over by 9:30 p.m. Twenty games are played including three progressive blackout games. – Reporter

HOUSTON – Houston Lodge will meet Monday, June 13, at Tia Maria’s Mexican Restaurant, 4618 Dacoma St., off 290.

At the April meeting, the lodge welcomed new members John Riley Wilson, Leah Abigail Lindsay, Scarlet Rose Park, Gracie River Park, Homer Ollen Brothers, Cheyenne Grace Howell, Cara Ann Wilson, Josephine Kinney Morrow, Carter Scott Brookhouser, Christina Nichole Lee and Susan Mesecke Boone.

Harold W. Fiedler, Thomas W. Fiedler and Charles W. Fiedler have transferred to Comfort Lodge and Larry Alois Weikel and Diane Faye Weikel transferred to Brenham Lodge.

Get-well prayers go out to Sheila Lee, Darlene Ellison and Leon Moore.

Dallas Lodge recognizes pin recipients

DALLAS – Dallas Lodge recognized members who received their 50-year membership pins this year at the last meeting. They are Brian K. Eitel of Stone Mountain, GA., Casey G. and Leslie R. Elliott of Allen, and Laura L. Savell of Mount Airy, GA. They have all been members since May 1972.

Amber Morchower, Home Association general manager, reported the hall served as the headquarters for the Deep Ellum Arts Festival April 1-3. The hall had a barbecue vendor, bartenders, a Fine Arts Gallery and live music. On Saturday, Columbia and Dallas lodge members prepared and served pancakes, orange juice and coffee. The volunteers from the lodges were Amanda Hobbs, Jeremiah Arauco, Dave Lewis, Gilbert Shelby, Cecilia Phillips, Stanley Whitehead, Bobby Wilbanks, Eva Day, Clint and Terri Holmes. Other friends of the hall helped too. The hall was full of customers Saturday afternoon and night. It was reported that this year’s event was the most profitable. Amber, her staff and volunteers deserve the credit.

In observance of Join Hands Day, the lodge made a donation to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council. The lodge will not meet in June.

DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge discussed plans for the upcoming Annual Fourth of July Celebration at the April meeting. A drive-through or dine-in barbeque meal will be served from 11 a.m. until gone. Other events will include a silent auction, raffle, bingo and a dance with music by Ed Kopecky.

The lodge was proud to host the Deanville Depot Grand Opening Orphan Train presentations. Families of the Orphan Train Riders that came to Burleson County had the opportunity to celebrate and share their Orphan Train Riders’ story and presenters, including member Tom Krenek, shared the story of the Orphan Train era.

The lodge brought back door prizes to the monthly meetings. It was a lucky day for Janet Phillips who walked away with most of the prizes. Thanks to Tammy and Benny Jones for donating the door prizes.

The lodge collected bags of chips for the Boys and Girls Club Caldwell Unit during the month of May for its Join Hands Day Project. Chips were collected at Citizens State Bank.

DACOSTA – DaCosta Lodge will meet July 12 at 6 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend.

Congratulations to Julie Thigpen who won the DaCosta Lodge Raffle Fund-raiser. She will receive a 2022-2023 free hall rental, free band performance and a $1,000 bar credit. The lodge thanks everyone who bought tickets. Stay tuned for a future fund-raiser.

In observance of Join Hands Day, members will volunteer at the DaCosta Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fundraiser event on June 11. A public dance featuring Southern Drive Band will follow. Doors open at 7 p.m. Come out and support the department.

Schulenburg to meet Aug. 10 at Oakridge Restaurant

SCHULENBERG – Schulenburg Lodge will meet Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Oakridge Restaurant at 5:30 p.m. for refreshments and the meal will be served at 6 p.m.

The lodge welcomes new members Oliver Fynn Shimek and Emily Rose Moreno.

At the May meeting, 50-year membership pins were presented. The recipients included Delores Michalke, Rodney Michalke and Raychelle Michalke. Accepting for Raychelle was Bill Michalke.

The lodge donated to the Schulenburg Area Food Pantry for Join Hands Day. For Flag Day, June 14, the lodge will provide a flag for the Hermann Sons Cemetery in Freyburg now called Friburg Cemetery.

Agent Mary Seifert reported on the scholarship applications and the recipient this year is Ellie Fike.

Arline Ulrich reported that birthday gifts were given to Ovella Stuchley and Verlene Hoffmann who are in the Regency Nursing Home.

Memorials were given in memory of Edith Kocurek by Ed and Jennifer Moeller and family and Verdean Schilhab.

A thank-you note was received from Dr. Donald Kocurek. Delores Michalke thanked the lodge for her get-well card. It was announced that both Alton and Verdell Hafer are in the Regency Nursing Home.

Fort Worth provides shirts for juniors attending camp

FORT WORTH – Fort Worth welcomes its first new member of 2022 – Susan Pogue. Susan joins membership with many of her family members including her grandson. Welcome Susan and hope to see you at the next meeting.

The lodge will meet at 3 p.m. on June 12 at Sammy’s Restaurant in Burleson. This year’s pin recipients will be invited. Participants in the Join Hands Day projects will also receive an invitation.

Camp is right around the corner and campers from the lodge should receive their Camp T-shirts soon. Be watching the mail and parents, please send pictures of the campers to Sandra Jones at sandraj1966@yahoo.com. Groups of friends or relatives at Camp make great pictures for the lodge’s newspaper article.

Congratulations go out to two pin recipients. Eddie Huddleston will receive his 50-year membership pin. He has been a member since June 12, 1972. Gerald Lewis will also receive a 50-year membership pin and has been a member since June 12, 1972.

McGregor makes donations to pantry

MCGREGOR – McGregor Lodge will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, at the Coffee Shop. If the location changes, members will be notified.

At the May meeting, Marie Perry was presented her 75year membership pin. She has been a member since June 26, 1947. Mark Lammert recently received his 60-year membership pin. He has been a member since May 2, 1962. President Doris Mooney read thank you notes from Natisha, Karl and Brian Brandt for the donation made to the McGregor Food Pantry in memory of Walter Brandt. President Mooney also read a thank you from The Rhett Revolution/ McGregor Food Pantry for the donation made in memory of Walter Brandt. Another donation to the Rhett Revolution/McGregor Food Pantry was made in observance of Join Hands Day.

President Mooney honored mothers in attendance by presenting each one with a gift.

Happy anniversary wishes were extended to Jerome and Diane Weinstrom. They recently celebrated 27 years of marriage. Congratulations went out to Marie Perry on the birth of grandson, Rhett Houston Perry, son of Houston Perry who celebrated a birthday on May 8. – Reporter

Bernardo will present pins on June 15

BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge will hold pin presentations at the June 15 meeting. The annual summer picnic has been cancelled.

At the April meeting, members agreed to continue sending monetary donations to local fire departments in the amount of $100 each. In March, the lodge sent checks to the Bernardo, Cat Spring and Columbus volunteer fire departments.

Agent Robin Maertz reported Camp is fast approaching. Juniors ages 8-9 can attend MiniCamp and juniors ages 9-14 can attend a full week in Comfort.

Lodge juniors Briley Zapalac, Grayson Anderson and Weston Sutherland have registered for Camp. They each will receive $50 from the lodge to go toward their fees.

In the Cheer Committee report, Beatrice Hill noted sending get-well cards to Marilyn Harbich, Terrel Maertz and Butch Sodolak.

Anita Zaskoda and Joe Trojacek celebrated birthdays in April.
