SAN ANTONIO – In addition to life insurance and annuities, Hermann Sons Life is excited to offer Medicare to our members. We have experienced Medicare Agents onboard that can help navigate the complexities of Medicare coverage. Whether you are new to Medicare or need help reviewing and adjusting your existing plan, our Medicare Agents are ready to assist you.
Our Hermann Sons Life Medicare agents can help explain the different options along with what is covered and what is not covered. Our agents can help you compare multiple plan options based on your healthcare needs, prescription drugs, preferred doctors and hospitals and budget.
ANNUAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD (AEP)
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) began on Oct. 15 and ends on Dec. 7. During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can review and make changes to their existing coverage, including Medicare (Part C) and Medicare Prescriptions Drug Plans (Part D). Here are some important reasons why it is important to review your existing
Medicare plan during AEP.
1. Plan Changes for the Upcoming Year:
Medicare Advantage and Part D plans can change benefits, premiums, copayments and formularies each year. Review Annual Notices:
a. Changes in coverage: Some services or drugs you need may no longer be covered, or the plan may change the healthcare providers and pharmacies that are in-network.
b. Cost changes: Premiums, deductibles, and copayments could increase, affecting your out-of-pockets expenses.
c. Formulary adjustments: Medications covered by your prescription drug plan may change, with drugs added or removed, or tier changes that could impact
your costs.
2. Changes in Your Healthcare Needs
Your personal healthcare needs may have changed over the past year. Reviewing your plan allows you to ensure it still meets your needs:
a. New diagnoses or condition requiring ongoing treatment.
b. Changes in medication that may require checking whether your prescriptions are covered or if there is a more affordable option.
c. The need or new benefits like dental, vision, or hearing, which might be available
3. Availability of New Plans or Better Options
Each year, new plans might become available in your area, or existing plans could offer better benefits. By comparing options during AEP, you can:
a. Find a plan with lower premiums or copays.
b. Choose a plan with expanded benefits, such as telehealth, transportation, or wellness programs.
c. Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan or vice versa depending on your health needs and budget.
SAN ANTONIO – Many of our members have indicated they no longer want to receive the printed copy of the Hermann Sons Life Newspaper by mail. Many read it on the Hermann Sons Life website, through our Facebook page or by the email option. By the time it is received in the mail, members say it is often thrown in the trash.
To be more ecologically responsible and less wasteful, the Home Office is requiring members who want to continue to receive the mailed copy of the newspaper to opt-in.
As of Jan. 1, 2025, the mailed newspaper request on all members’ policies will be reset.
We understand that there are many members who do enjoy reading the printed version of the newspaper and we are happy to continue mailing it to them at their request. There is no need to reach out to us again if you have already opted in. To continue to receive the newspaper by mail, call 210-226-9261 ext. 325 or 1-800-234-4124 ext. 325 or email: optin@hermannsonslife.org

As we prepare to gather with our family and friends around dinner tables this Thanksgiving, it’s a great reminder of how blessed we are. This season, we count our blessings not only for the abundance of food, family, and shelter but also for the resilience we’ve seen in communities facing hardship, particularly in the wake of hurricanes Helene and Milton.
We share in the heartbreak with our neighbors who’ve lost their lives and experienced devastation, we have also witnessed remarkable acts of courage and kindness. Neighbors risked their own safety to help one another, communities opened their doors to the displaced, and first responders worked around the clock, often putting their own families on hold to ensure the safety of others.
This outpouring of support serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a powerful reminder of how much we have to be thankful for, even in the face of adversity.
This Thanksgiving, it is important to remember not only the
blessings in our own lives but also to extend our thoughts and actions toward those who are still recovering. This holiday is an opportunity to reflect on what truly matters – life, love, and the connections that bind us together as a community.
Hermann Sons Life, along with many organizations, is working to provide aid to the survivors of the hurricanes as we are reminded that giving thanks can also mean giving back. Donations of money, time and resources can help re-
build homes and restore hope for those hardest hit by the storms.
In a season traditionally focused on plenty, perhaps the greatest gift we can offer is our support to those who have lost so much.
Many of our lodges have asked where they can send their donations for hurricane relief. Hermann Sons Life will be contributing to hurricane relief and will be accepting donations from any member or lodge that wishes to contribute through a Hermann Sons Life collective effort. Please
feel free to send your donations to the home office at: Hermann Sons Life P.O. Box 1941, San Antonio, TX 78297-1941 to the attention of Hurricane Relief.
In counting our blessings, we honor both what we have and what we can give to others. This Thanksgiving, may we find ways to extend that spirit of gratitude to all, especially those who need it most. May this holiday season be especially blessed for you and your families. Happy Thanksgiving!

Last month we discussed Original Medicare, which is made up of two Parts, Part A and Part B; and this month we’ll cover Parts C and D; and Medicare Supple-
ments.
Remember from last month’s article, Original Medicare does not cover everything, plus there are deductibles and coinsurance for services under Parts A and B. The majority of people with Original Medicare purchase additional coverage to help reduce
Part C - Medicare Advantage Plan with Prescription Drug Coverage (MAPD)
Benefits:
● Medicare Advantage plans cover all the benefits covered under Part A & B of Original Medicare
● Plans are offered by Private companies that contract with Medicare
● Most plans include prescription drug coverage. Advantage plans without drug coverage are available if you have other creditable drug coverage, like through the VA.
● Many plans offer additional benefits:
○ Routine dental
○ Routine eye exams and eyewear
○ Routine hearing exams and aids
○ Wellness programs
How the Plans Work
Medicare Advantage Plans
● Companies contract with Medicare to provide all of your Part A & B covered services
● Plans have no medical underwriting
● Many plans are $0 premium
● You may have out-of-pocket copays and coinsurance when you use services
● Plans have an annual out-of-pocket maximum that limits members out-ofpocket costs
● Plans have a network of providers,
● Some plans offer out-of-network coverage
● Some plans require a referral to see a specialist and prior authorization before service
● Many plans offer additional benefits like routine dental, vision and hearing along with fitness benefits and other wellness programs.
● You may have a deductible and/or copay for covered medications on plans that include prescription drug coverage
● For 2025, the members maximum outof-pocket cost for prescriptions covered by the Plan is $2000.
their out-of-pocket costs.
There are two “paths” you can take for additional coverage Making a Decision
Which “path” should you choose?
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all when it comes to choosing a Medicare Plan; it depends on
Medicare Supplement Plan plus a standalone Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP)
Benefits:
● Medicare Supplement Plans are designed to help pay Part A deductible and Parts A & B coinsurance
● There are 10 standardized Supplement plans offered by private insurance companies. (MA, MN,WI have plans different from the standard)
● No outpatient drug coverage, or routine dental, vision, hearing coverage +
● Prescription Drug Plans help cover the cost of outpatient prescription drugs.
● They cover most common medications and will have a formulary (drug list) of drugs covered on the Plan
How the Plans Work
● Insurance companies offer the Plans standardized by the Federal Government
● The monthly premiums vary depending on the plan and state you reside in, but generally range from $100-$400.
● No medical underwriting up to 6 months after enrolling in Part B at age 65 or older
● Plans are guaranteed renewable
● No provider network, you can see any Dr. in the U.S. that accepts Medicare
● You pay a monthly premium for the Part D plan. The average premium is around $36/month.
● You may have a copay for each covered medication, depending on tier
● Your plan may or may not have a deductible. For 2025, the deductible cannot be more than $590
● For 2025, the members maximum outof-pocket cost for prescriptions covered by the Plan is $2000.
your individual needs.
That's why it’s best to work with a licensed insurance agent you trust; he/she represents multiple carriers and is trained to help you compare Medicare plans and help you find the plan that will best meet your needs.
It’s also best to review your
Plan every year during Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15-Dec 7) as your needs may change and Plans change. Make sure you do a Plan review with a licensed agent to ensure you know about all the changes to Plans and make an informed decision about your health coverage.

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, reviewing your prescription drug plan during AEP can help ensure:
a. You get the best coverage for the medications you take, especially if your prescriptions have changed.
b. You are minimizing out-ofpockets drug costs, as formularies and drug tiers change annually.
5. Check Provider Networks and Preferred Pharmacies
Medicare Advantage plans often rely on networks of doctors and hospitals, which can change from year to year.
During AEP, you can ensure that:
Your current doctors and specialists remain in-network preventing higher out-of-pocket costs.
You have access to convenient and local pharmacies that are considered preferred providers, which can reduce your prescription costs.
If your financial situation has changed, you may now qualify for assistance programs which can lower your premiums, de-
ductibles and copayments. Reviewing your plan can help reduce your healthcare expenses.
7. Avoid Suprises in 2025 By reviewing your plan during AEP, you can ensure that you will not face unexpected changes in 2025, such as:
a. Unexpected higher premiums or copays.
b. Changes in drug coverage that lead to higher out-of-pocket costs for your medications.
c. Reduced access to your preferred providers.
AEP is your opportunity make sure your Medicare coverage aligns with your current healthcare needs and budget. By taking the time to review plan changes, compare options and adjust your coverage, you can save money and avoid unexpected costs in the upcoming year.
Hermann Sons Life Medicare Agents are available to help guide you when selecting the right Medicare coverage. We will offer ongoing support and help ensure that your plan meets your healthcare needs.

BRAUNFELS
– Howie and Beau have had a relatively calm month and have managed to keep out of trouble for the most part.
Beau still channels his inner Linus as he loves to steal blankets and sheets and carry them around. We often find him with our missing sheets or blankets headed down the stairs. Howie recently claimed a comforter I was about to wash as his own. He snuggles into it everynight at bedtime and we haven’t had the heart to take it away from him.
The boys have been enjoying ice and it has become one
of their favorite treats. Anytime we’re at the refrigerator, they’re waiting for their ice. They’ve also been kind enough to share their newfound treasures from the backyard. We’ve been finding pieces of sticks all over the living room.
We’ve also discovered Howie has a knack for getting his tongue stuck on things like the couch and when it happens, he looks like he’s malfunctioning as he struggles to figure out how to get himself unstuck.
Howie and Beau wanted to introduce you to their sweet friend, Honey. Miss Honey is the sweetest girl with adorable floppy ears. Because of her rough start in life, she wasn’t too sure

The lodge thanks all these programs for their dedication to the community.
