Insight Summer 2016

Here for people with sight loss Hello Everyone, We recently held our annual volunteers party which is a great opportunity for us to say a huge thank you and show our appreciation to our many volunteers who help us in so many ways. (It’s also a chance for us all to let our hair down a bit and have a bit of fun! ) We simply couldn’t deliver all the services without the support of our wonderful volunteers so once again a huge thank you to you all. I recently spent the day in Scarborough with members enjoying our annual Summer holiday. Although the weather wasn’t too good or warm on the day I was there, the reception certainly was and it was lovely to see people sharing experiences and making new friends with the added security of knowing that HERIB staff are around for that extra bit of support if needed. I hope everyone who went had a wonderful time and I look forward to seeing you all on the next trip! I’m really pleased to see our SocialEYES activity programme is going from strength to strength with new members joining all the time. Whether you fancy walking football, or singing, arts and crafts or tenpin bowling, you can be sure you will receive a warm welcome from all the staff and other members so go on, give it a try! Our new Telephone Befrienders are also doing a fantastic job making regular calls to some of our most isolated members and speaking to them, I get a real sense that they were all enjoying their roles and getting a lot out of it too. If you have a bit of time to spare and think you would like to be a Telephone Befriender please contact us, we’d love to hear from you and we provide full training so no experience is necessary. Alternatively if you would like to receive regular calls from us, please give us a ring and we’ll make arrangements; it could be the best call you ever make ! Well that’s all from me for now so I hope you all have a lovely Summer and the sun shines for us all, so until next time, take care and have fun! Sandra Ackroyd, Chief Executive

News from our Board of Trustees Hello everyone We know we have some very dedicated and long serving staff members at HERIB who all do a great job; we’re also very fortunate to have some very dedicated and long serving volunteers who help us deliver our services so I was very pleased to see us celebrating the contribution of our volunteers this month during National Volunteers Week. We are always looking for new volunteers in a variety of roles to help us expand our services; our newest service being our Telephone Befriending; equally if you or someone you know would like to help run any of our social groups, perhaps someone enjoys rambling and knows some nice walks and could lead our walking group one week, or someone who has a few hours to spare and an interest in helping people get fit and have fun, might like to support our walking football? Whatever it is, if you or someone you know would like to get involved please give us a call, we’d love to hear from you.

I’m pleased to see that we are joining forces with the RNIB campaigns team to encourage and help people to write to their GP’s to make sure they get their health information in their preferred format. It’s important that you can gain this personal information in a format that is suitable for you and you therefore don’t have to rely on others reading your personal information if that’s not what you want. I’m aware that this is a requirement of the Care Act and is something the medical profession have to provide if it is requested. We’d be interested to hear your stories (good and bad) about how you get on with this so that we can monitor progress in this area. I’m also very pleased to see that Places for People, the owners of the flats at Beech Holme Court, are making a significant investment into the property by putting new kitchens and windows into all flats, this work will start over the summer and should be complete by the end of the year. This will offer an updated and fresh living environment for those with a visual impairment who want to live independently but may need a little bit of extra support. If you are interested in finding out more about the flats and/or wish to put your name on our waiting list please don’t hesitate to contact us, we would be happy to show you round one of the properties. Kind regards Hollie Haeney Chair of Trustees

Au revoir

Need it to Read it

what they need and provide it as part of their routine service.

Your NHS information in your format – when you need it.

What NHS providers need to do and when

By 31 July 2016 your right to accessible NHS information is strengthened by a new NHS standard. The standard is mandatory which means all NHS providers are required to meet the communication needs of their patients and service users, including providing information in accessible formats. It applies to healthcare providers from GPs and dentists to hospitals and pharmacists.

By 1 April 2016, NHS providers must identify and record how their patients need to be communicated with. Whether they are visiting the service for the first time, or a regular user.

People who cannot read standard print have been used to the problems that inaccessible NHS information causes, from missing appointments to arriving unprepared for a medical procedure. Being unaware of your diagnosis and the decisions that a specialist makes about your treatment, and not knowing what is written on the dispensing label on your medication box, are also common problems caused by information being unavailable in accessible formats. It has always been up to people to find ways round the lack of NHS accessible information, from asking other people to help, to scanning and magnifying unreadable bits of paper, to challenging providers under the Equality Act 2010. None of this is easy especially when you’re unwell. This new NHS accessible information standard should bring about a dramatic change by putting the onus on NHS providers to ask the patient

By 31 July 2016, these records must be in place, and patients should receive information in a format they can read. Act now! Take action to notify From April 2016, NHS providers including GP services are required to capture and record their patients’ accessible format needs on their patient record systems. However, NHS providers aren’t implementing the standard in the same way or at the same time. It’s also important to know that they aren’t setting up systems that automatically identify patient communication needs. It is up to patients to say what they individually require. Take action: Notify your GP Practice Manager of your required accessible format. You can do this in writing - by letter or, if available, by email. You can call HERIB on 01482 342297 to request a copy of a GP notification template to make your own letter or to request help from your Community Advice Officer to draft a GP notification letter on your behalf.

Did you get a successful reply from your GP?

A successful response is when your GP confirms that your needs have been recorded and flagged on the patient record system, and your needs will be met by the July 31 deadline. However if you don’t get a response, or if they say they cannot meet your needs by the July 31 deadline for any reason, then treat this as an unsuccessful response. Share successful and unsuccessful responses with us Please allow three weeks for your GP to respond, then let HERIB know if your GP responded successfully or if they didn’t.

Call us on 01482 342297 or email tracya@herib.co.uk. If your GP did not reply successfully, we’ll provide you with advice and information to help you follow up your request. Finally………

Don’t forget to spread the word about the Need It to Read It campaign to help other blind and partially sighted NHS users to encourage as many people as possible to notify their GP. Remember: Your NHS information in your format – when you need it.

Benefits Advice With all the changes to benefits that are taking place, particularly in relation to the change from Disability Living Allowance to Personal Independent Payment, we understand that many of our members may be worried about how this will affect their lives on a day to day basis. If you need advice about your benefits, we may be able to help, please contact us on 01482 342297.

It’s Good to Talk

Our Telephone Befriending Service aims to reduce the feelings of loneliness and isolation for anyone in Hull and East Yorkshire who is blind or partially sighted and who is unable to get out and about for whatever reason. The scheme offers regular weekly or fortnightly telephone calls from trained befrienders most of whom are also visually impaired. They will take time to listen, while giving you the opportunity to talk about anything you feel that you’d like to share. It can be anything from life’s ups and downs, current affairs, things of interest, listening to your news, discussing the weather or just having a catch up and a chat. In the first few months of this new service we have received some very positive feedback including: “I was feeling a little down with no-one to talk to, I cheered up when my befriender called. I call her my special friend. She’s a lovely lady,” Mrs F. “I wish I could see you as you sound like a lovely lady and you really must call me every week.” Mrs S.

It is important that people feeling isolated know that there is a friendly, listening and caring ear at the end of the phone. If you ,or someone you know may benefit from receiving a friendly phone call or would like to become a volunteer telephone befriender, please contact our Telephone Befriending Coordinator , Karen Dunderdale on 01482 342297.

Optimeyes

please contact Tracy Atkinson, on 01482 342297 for more information.

Technology Tuition Using information and assistive technology has become a key skill for everyday living, enabling access to services, products and leisure opportunities as well as education and employment. Our Optimeyes project works in partnership with the national charity RNIB and five other local sight loss charities across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund. It aims to improve eye health awareness and by working with other local organisations helps us to identify older people who may be experiencing problems with their vision and refer them on to local health, social and HERIB services which can provide them with additional support. With this aim in mind, over recent months, our Training Officer Tracy Atkinson has been out and about delivering training to a number of partners including:    

I feel I will soon be able to communicate with and play games with my friends.” It is never too late to start learning and age isn't a barrier to developing computing skills. Business Lunch

Guess the Olympian

Thursday 10th November at The Country Park Inn 12noon Tickets £25 HERIB is delighted to announce leading local business man Paul Sewell O.B.E. as the guest speaker at our forthcoming Business Networking Luncheon.

It’s an Olympic year and Great Britain’s finest Olympians and Paralympians will be taking on the world in Rio to join a long list of former British Olympic Heroes.

Over 35 years Paul has transformed a leading construction company to the business it is today, a holistic services provider for public services and local communities, which has successfully delivered schools, health centres and community facilities across the region. The Group has also developed a nationally acclaimed chain of fuel and convenience stores.

Here at HERIB we are also on a mission to find local champions to help raise lots of money to help local people affected by sight.

For further information or to book for any of our events, please call HERIB on 01482 342297 or email Angela Gregory at angelag@herib.co.uk.

More news If you would also like to receive our monthly Enewsletters with up-to-date news of our events and campaigns, please email angelag@herib.co.uk. And don’t forget! You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Could you be a Champion and help us by organising one of our Guess the Olympian raffles? You can request your Guess the Olympian pack by emailing angelag@herib.co.uk or calling HERIB on 01482 342297. We will then send you one of our printed name cards. Each card lists the names of 50 great British Olympians at £1 per guess. Once all the names have been sold, you scratch off and reveal the winning Olympian’s name and present the prize to the lucky winner. If you can provide a prize that would be amazing as it would mean even more money will be raised to help local people who are blind or partially sighted, however, HERIB can also supply you with a prize if needed. Please be a Champion for HERIB!

Your Support We can’t say thank you enough! So many people give their time and energy to raising funds in support of HERIB. It never ceases to amaze us just how kind people can be. Here are just a few of the things that our supporters have been doing recently:

A huge thank you to Elaine Cornforth who completed the Manchester Marathon raising more than £2,000 in support of HERIB. What a fantastic achievement. A big thank you to Tina Cerruti and her Busy Bees charity who handed over a cheque for a wonderful £100 from their fundraising efforts.

Our wonderful friends at the Rotary Club of Humberside raised an incredible £1,000 at their annual Golf Day. Thank you all for your continued support of our work. A huge thank you to Hull University student Max Cummings who held a pub quiz in aid of HERIB and raised a fantastic £182!

Thank you to David Byass and family for once again allowing us to host a stall at their annual Steam Rally in Little Weighton. The sun shone and our teddy tombola raised a fantastic £237.

The lovely Amanda Newton took on the Salford 10k race to raise a fantastic £111 for HERIB. Paul Hastie cycled his way coast to coast from Morecambe to Bridlington over three days and raised a fabulous £450!

Our deepest condolences and special thanks go to the family and friends of the late Nora Clyens who made a gift of £400 from a collection at her funeral. Nora was a much loved member of our Hull Day Group who will be missed by staff and members alike. Such a thoughtful way to honour the memory of a loved one.

Volunteers Needed

Local businesses continue to provide vital support to the charity. Bridge McFarland Solicitors (pictured above) sponsored our recent Ladies Luncheon event which raised over £3,000. The company also works closely with HERIB to offer advice on Wills and Powers of Attorney to our members. Our friends at Armadillo Storage allow us to store donations of soft toys at their fabulous facility. Thanks to their support so far this year our teddy tombolas have already raised more than £600! Our friends at 360 Accountants have taken on our Challenge 500 to raise more than £500 for the charity before the end of October. We can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with! We welcome the opportunity of working with companies of all sizes, so for an informal chat to discuss in more detail how working with us can benefit your business, please call Angela Gregory on 01482 342297.

As part of this year’s National Volunteers Week celebrations in June, HERIB volunteers of all ages and who support the charity in many different ways, came together at a special party held in their honour. Certificates were presented, speeches made and guests tucked into a delicious buffet whilst being entertained by the fabulously talented singer Emily Taylor from girl group the Melodies. HERIB has plenty of volunteering opportunities from which to choose. You can have fun and meet new people whilst gaining satisfaction that you have made a real difference to the lives of local people living with sight loss. To find out more about volunteering with HERIB please contact us today on 01482 342297.
