The painter Aristodimos Papadakis, through his art, reveals the various aesthetical values, he renders the colours into unique materials that are spread into the imaginary space through the personal prisme of the artist.
At the same time, this current edition, highlights the great folklore tradition of Crete, as this is demonstrated through the art of Cretan weaving of the past decades. The painting of Aristodimos unveils ancient memories, the culture of Crete, our recent history, the everyday life of the Cretan homes through the art of weaving.
We, the Region of Crete, especially congratulate Aristodimos Papadakis because through his lifetime work, he illuminates the specific artistic identity of Crete, as he ‘touches’ the most sensitive aspects of emotions. We also warmly congratulate all the contributors of this edition.
The conversation between traditional and contemporary is a worthy, yet dangerous task. Worthy, because it offers the future step which ensures the continuity of tradition, and dangerous, because it often risks becoming a bad and pointless imitation. Therefore, what is needed is a profound knowledge of both and a masterly handling of inspiration, so the principle tradition can become a suggestion towards the future can be vindicated.
Aristodimos was born and raised in the valley of Mesara, surrounded by its colors, its scents and its sounds, where the weavers dyed and weaved, drawing their inspiration and materials from the memories and nature. So, he has surely comprehended the notion of tradition. He is moved by the technique and the colors of a Cretan patania (quilt), but he does not stop there. His studies at the School of Fine Arts taught him the universality of art, while his experienced instinct helped him to see his work through a wide glance. He evolved himself in a way that could be considered a leap into the future. And thanks to this leap, the excellent painter was able to approach the conversation between tradition and contemporary art in a perfect way. In other words, he offered tradition the chance to converse with the future.
If the visitors understand the implicit yet clear insinuations of the exhibition, with the way it has been set up, with its analogies and the parallelisms, then they will be able to understand the importance of the artistic creation that is being presented; and that the artist’s personal course stands on two solid pillars: tradition and contemporary creation. And that, beyond any doubt, requires a soul-searching effort, hard work and self-knowledge.

Aristodemus op art in cretan textiles
In the past days Cretan homemakers made sure to open their clothes trunk once a year, take all their clothes out in the sun to be ventilated, and put them back exactly in the same position by adding new aromatic plants, lavender, and sage, which served a dual purpose: to perfum their dowry and protect it from the moth. This image of the handwoven textiles spread in the yards of the houses is brought back to mind by the latest artwork of the painter Aristodemus.
It is easily understood by studying the artistic production of Aristodemus, that the subject of his works stems from his personal experiences, and it is drawn from his social surroundings. This is certainly not the first time that his paintings evoke memories of the past. The faceless female figures, shadows of another era, with the characteristic movements of the limbs, the traditional Cretan houses seen with an entirely personal perspective, his burning trees, the olives, the pomegranates, the scarecrows-sacred totems, the metal children’s planes over boxes-skyscrapers forerunners of a current historical moment, the colourful Greek flags, are all subject matters which, when they are examined at the time they were created and under the politicaleconomic and social circumstances that gave birth to them, acquire such a significance that transcend events and achieve timeless value.
Aristodemus and his generation were gifted to live next to and within the colours of the Cretan land and the Cretan architecture. The bright red of the rose madder the yellow of the wood sorrel and the pomegranate, the green of the false yellowhead, the fuchsia of the root of the plane tree and the carob tree, the crimson of the aladon (pink rockrose), the blue of the indigo, the semi-white of the wool and the off-white of the cotton ware the colours among which he was born, lived as a child, as a teenager and young man. Having theese color aesthetic foundations, he was admitted to the School of Fine Arts to study the magic of colours and shapes.
In a new period of introversion, Aristodemus opened the trunk of his spiritual heritage. he spread all of his mother’s dowry, in the sun and in the air, to breath: patanies (woven blankets), chamia (woven bedspreads), tableclothes, towels, cotton sacks and a large woven vourgia (rucksack), specially made for the transfer of the bread offerings on feasts in chapels. The spread of the dowry evoked memories hidden for a long time in the rorners of the mind and brought to light colours and shapes, familiar but unprocessed to the mind and soul of the experienced aritst.
In weaving, shapes and forms continuously acquire a geometric form. They are trapped in the geometry of the straight line. There are no curves anywhere – only straight lines. In cases where attempts are made to attribute angles, these are not real but an illusion, such as electronic pixels, and only if you investigate them closely you do find the optical illusion. The size of the stripes, which alternate between wool, linen, and cotton handwoven textiles, varies from a few milimetres to one or two centimetres, forming waves of colours that move, each time you look at them, like a vision, like the way the lines of a text move in front of tires eyes of the reader and heat reflections in the heart of a hot high summer day. Looking at them, your eyes blur, and you feel the need to focus elswhere and then look back again to make sure that the illusion is always there for the eyes that seek it.
The deximates patanies again, are not simple weaving or embroidery, i.e., painting on canvas or fabric, materials on which the popular creator leaves free his imagination and soul to create. In embroidery, the embroiderer spreads coulours here and there on the sails, and they come to life, justh as the painter applies his paints on the canvas and acquires meanings. At the deximo the weaver does not try to paint or cover the warp with the weft but plays by alternating its hiding or revealing with a monochome weft. Polychromy, now,
gives way to bicolour, which is again an illusion, as sometimes the density of the warp and sometimes the ensity of the weft create the feeling of different colour tones. The deximo is not a simple weave. It is a complex as te product of a modern computer. It is a product of high intelligence and wonderful inspiration.
The weaver has conceived by her own the design and planed its construction using only two materials, the loom wood, and the threads. She places them accordingly –programming them in her language–she goes through lines and scallops and by pressing the appropriate buttons they rise or fall, open or c close piles of threads/warps allowing the weft to capture the planned design. If there is an ancestor of the modern computer, it is none other than the loom, and its first operators were women, who first understood the cocept of deductive logic and programming, the least in Greece, where weaving was a women’s affair. The result is always impressive. A flood of small squares/pixels create bundles of constantly repeating geometric shapes, which dazzle the eye in its attemt to exhaust its visual abilities from a game of kinetic illusions.
It took may years of successful course in art for Aristodemus to realize something that he took for granted. The patanies that wrapped his body offering warmth on the cold winter nights or that spread on the dry stones to act as a painting background in the first photographs of his life remained as an apparition in the labyrinthine corridors of memory had not only practical and aesthetic/decorative value. The maturity of Aristodemus gaze and the collective cultural DNA that accumulates over time and settles down when studied in detail from a few selected, namely artists’ persolan DNA. In that way Aristodemus understood a basic rul of life. nothing is a product of parthenogenesis, neither Art products.
Aristodemus captured in his new painting collection the illusion of mobility. This mobility of shapes is not influenced by the abstract kinetic geometric art, op art, of the 1960s. Still, it is a continuation of a preexisting kinetic artistic expression imprinted on Cretan textiles two and three centuries before the advent of op art, illiterate creations. However, Cretan women knew very well the game of optical illusions. It is an opart before op art, with its strong roots is reflected iether in autonomous paintings or as motifs embedded in older thematic images, in the contex of a reflection, a meta-analysis of his overall work, as proof of his evolutionary artistic course.
However, this is not the fist time that Aristodemus has attemted to “catch” the movement in his paintings. His “Flags”, regardless of which socio-political associations, create the same sense of direction, especially those that are spread on surfaces of rectangular shapes and are in a constant post-movement in space, in a perpetual ripple, seeking to break the barrier of the frame that surrounds them and pours into the space.
The audience that stands in front of these works of Aristodemus should not be seduced by the traditional element or the decorative character and eventualy misinterpret despite the fact that both textile and cosmetic, appear in the final art product. The audience must be aware that stand in front of modern pieces of art, which continue the long Cretan artistic tradition with the play of colours, shapes, and the illustion of movement. In the respect, Aristodemus’s recent work is undoubtedly innovative and unique.
