BLUE MOON HEMP COMPANY PROFILE F

ounder Christopher D. Cowart, former athlete and competitive golfer, suffered a tear to the labrum muscle in his shoulder in 2015. Before going through with surgery and western medicine, he decided to look in to natural remedies. After speaking with a holistic specialist, he was introduced to CBD. Christopher had to know more. He contacted a doctor in Colorado who took the time to explain what cannabidiol (CBD) was, the endocannabinoid system (ECS), how CBD and the ECS interact, as well as the anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety benefits of CBD. After hearing how it could possibly help him heal, Christopher ordered a bottle of CBD tincture on faith. Luckily, his faith did not fail him. Only two weeks later, he was golfing again and realized he had found a miracle! This result propelled him to go into business providing a product he knew he could help others who suffered from a variety of ailments, in addition to providing general wellness. He then joined forces with one of largest industrial hemp producers in Kentucky to get Blue Moon Hemp started in the fall of 2015. By spring of 2016, Blue Moon Hemp was in full swing; providing top quality CBD products to the public. The company started in full compliance with Sec. 7606 of the 2014 Farm Bill, under the provision that products which were derived from Cannabis Sativa (or, industrial hemp)-- and not Cannabis Indica-- that contained less than .03% THC were permitted for commercial use. The latest provision of the Farm Bill has given agricultural hemp an additional boost by removing low-THC cannabis from regulation under the

14

HEMP&CBDMAG

Controlled Substances Act. Signed in to law on December 20, 2018, the bill now helps hemp farmers with agricultural grants, water rights, and perhaps most importantly—it makes the federal banking system available to the hemp industry. While “less than .03% THC” is the legal standard for CBD products, Blue Moon Hemp goes the extra step and reduces the THC to “TRIP ZERO” .0001 or ND – Non-Detectable. They use eco-sustainable methods, follow organic practices, use no chemicals, pesticides, or artificial flavors, and instead use all plant-based products. Blue Moon Hemp was proud to break the purity record (100%) from Pro Verde Labs in Massachusetts. Their product is the gold standard. Blue Moon Hemp’s formulations use a Nano-technology called micro emulsion, or micro encapsulation. This means the product is rendered into Nano-sized particles, making it more readily absorbed into the bloodstream regardless of how it is consumed. Christopher is confident in knowing Blue Moon Hemp carries highly reliable products, backed by an extremely high customer retention rate. He is also focused on providing exceptional customer service, providing resources like blogs and social media for customers to reach out to one another—and his company directly— to help spread awareness and education about CBD and its benefits. The CBD e-liquid line is Blue Moon Hemp’s best-selling product. To manufacture it, they use non-GMO organic palm kernel oil and bio corn-based propylene glycol. This yields a better taste and a higher quality than when propylene glycol is combined with soy; a common practice for their competition.

CHRISTOPHER D. COWART - FOUNDER

Christopher is confident in knowing Blue Moon Hemp carries highly reliable products, backed by an extremely high customer retention rate.

Blue Moon Hemp’s award-winning vapes are just one section of their extensive line of CBD products. Great tasting tinctures, CBD gummies, shatter and healing salves-- as well as feline and canine tinctures-- are all on the menu, giving their customers a wide range of ways to get their daily serving of CBD. Being an industry leader in product formulation and scientific development, Blue Moon Hemp is in the process of creating a new cosmetic CBD line, Kanna Bliss, to add to their existing portfolio. And Christopher has noticed rapidly growing consumer awareness of CBD. The industry is shedding the social stigma that has been imposed on it in the past. As consumers are learning they can treat their aliments with CBD, there is now more acceptance of alternative medicines. This is giving Blue Moon Hemp the opportunity to share their products in vape shops all over the world and at industry shows. You can find out more by simply visiting their website at bluemoonhemp.com or give them a call at 888-223-0420 for more information about CBD, and Blue Moon Hemp’s growing line of top-tier CBD products.

HISTO RY

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HEMP IN THE UK

Hemp has been used in the UK for an estimated 4,000 years; though its history is confusing, contradictive and controversial. One of hemp’s main uses was originally in paper production. ‘Rag paper’ was the term for paper created using discarded naval material (mainly sails and rope), old clothes, fabrics, curtains and rags. These materials were, at the time, made primarily from hemp. The ‘rag paper’, containing a high amount of hemp fibre, remains the highest quality and longest lasting paper to this day. This form of paper lasts for centuries. It can be wet, then returns to its full increased strength once dried again. Around the world, it was the most used paper for the writing of legal documents up until the 1920s. Hemp seeds were also a vital source of protein and oil, especially important during periods of famine and disease. The aforementioned maritime hemp ropes were of such high quality that Henry VIII ordered all landowners to grow hemp crops.

It was in 1842 that the East India Company brought back strong strains of cannabis from Bengal, where they were used for medicinal purposes. Shortly after this oils and tinctures were sold widely in markets across England to treat inflammation, menstrual cramps, insomnia, coughs, and opium withdrawal. In the beginning, these products were most popular amongst servants and the working classes, many of whom couldn’t afford the existing medicines. Overtime dignitary was introduced to medicinal cannabis through their staff and adopted it quickly, whilst a great many royals were introduced directly via the East India Company; with Queen Victoria using and promoting cannabis oils to her subjects, specifically those who could not afford the expensive medicines of the day. As the THC in these oils was not activated, it can be closely compared to modern day CBD and was used for incredibly similar purposes.

HISTO RY How did Cannabis become Illegal in the UK?

Following the Ban

By 1920, territories such as Jamaica, Sierra Leone, Singapore, and Mauritius had made cannabis illegal. Whilst there had been attempts to criminalise cannabis in British India throughout the 19th century, this was eventually abandoned and it was concluded that cannabis caused “little injury”.

In the period between the 1960s and early 1970s, over 11,000 people were being arrested for possession of cannabis in the UK each year. Britain’s own counter-culture youth movement, most comparable to the American ‘Beatniks’, was growing exponentially at this point in time. Associated with the anti-establishment ideals within such groups, cannabis was considered a helpful tool by such groups in terms of broadening their minds.

In 1928 the International Opium Convention began, at the same time America was in the process of banning Cannabis. The ban came through in the UK due to cannabis being connected with opium during talks. Following the opium wars Britain had fought against China and India, connecting cannabis to the drug was a certain way to tarr its name and increase the likelihood of the ban coming in to place. At this time, cannabis had fallen out of favour with the majority of the population. The invention of the syringe towards the end of the 19th century meant that cannabis became less and less popular, as it could not be dissolved in water. For this reason, other substances took precedence; with cannabis being associated with immigrants and the extremely poor. Because of these connotations, the ban was enacted with very little opposition.

In 1928 the International Opium Convention began, at the same time America was in the process of banning Cannabis. The ban came through in the UK due to cannabis being connected with opium during talks.

The Conservative government during this time focused on cannabis amongst other popular drugs, such as LSD, as one of the primary reasons swathes of young people were rejecting the old norms and values of the UK. Public Awareness campaigns were rolled out, painting cannabis as a corrupting influence on British youth; to no avail. Cannabis was classified as a Class B controlled substance (alongside ketamine and amphetamine).

CBD is now available for anybody to freely purchase in the UK, and Britain is the largest medicinal cannabis producer in the world. As recently as the 1990s research began on CBD and its medicinal properties. Licences to grow cannabis for research purposes were granted around this time. CBD is now available for anybody to freely purchase in the UK, and Britain is the largest medicinal cannabis producer in the world. Whilst medicinal cannabis is now legal in the UK, it is incredibly difficult to be prescribed the regulated products. Cannabis has consistently been the most used recreational drug in the UK for decades; however, most government experts are against its recreational legalisation.

HISTO RY

CANNABIS AND WITCHCRAFT Humans have enjoyed cannabis’ psychotropic effects for millennia, but did you know witches and ancient magical practitioners were amongst the heaviest users? The first recorded use of cannabis for magical purposes was by The Oracle of Delphi. This particular oracle was an ancient priestess of Apollo, performing divinations in a temple built beside a spring considered sacred at the time. People would visit to consult The Oracle of Delphi from all around the ancient world; even kings would take her advice regarding military manoeuvres and battles. It was believed that the spirit of Apollo would enter The Oracle, allowing her to see the future. In order to achieve this state, The Oracle would sit above a pit from which vapours rose. A mixture of hallucinogens, bay leaves and cannabis smoke surrounded her...creating a trance-like state. Cannabis was used throughout Greece, having been introduced via Central Asian tribes who were aware of the plant’s psychotropic effects and used it recreationally. Evidence of widespread cannabis use during Europe throughout the Middle Ages is sporadic; however, Pope Innocent VIII forbade its usage. What is known is that covens of witches smoked cannabis via instruments resembling

26

HEMP&CBDMAG

modern-day pipes, or simply heated the plant to inhale its vapours, in order to ‘thin the veil’ between this world and the next. They believed that by smoking the plant their spirit detached from their body, allowing them to achieve direct contact with the deceased and even the devil. It was also thought that spirits could only create pacts with the devil whilst detached from the human form, and inhaling cannabis smoke or vapours was a popular way of doing so. During the European Witch Trials, an estimated 40,000 people were killed (The Catholic Church burnt their victims, whilst Protestants hanged theirs). The use of cannabis was reason enough for many to be convicted of the crime of Witchcraft, meaning a great many herbologists met their untimely end during this period. In the UK at this time, an estimated 2% of people could read and write proficiently. As all written information relating to cannabis, along with hordes of people in possession of such texts, were burned; this knowledge was lost for years.

HISTO RY

CEREMONIAL CANNABIS

Plants within the cannabis family have a variety of uses; from the materials created from hemp fibre to the recreational smoking of cannabis flowers. We generally think of the ingestion of cannabis, for the purpose of experiencing its psychoactive effects, only in terms of recreational use. However, cannabis has also been used as an entheogen for millennia and continues to be used for this purpose to this day. Entheogens are the group of psychoactive substances used to attain spiritual experiences. Cannabis has traditionally been one of the most used entheogens, though hallucinogenics are also often used; such as psilocybin, ayahuasca, and peyote. Cannabis has historically been used for spiritual or religious purposes most often in the Indian subcontinent. The tradition continues on, though on a more limited scale. As Hinduism and Buddhism are the two leading faiths across India, it stands to reason that these two faiths would encompass the ceremonial and spiritual use of drugs. The religious use of drugs can be a contentious issue amongst a variety of groups; such disagreements are relatively common amongst Buddhist groups across India and farther afield. This is, in large part, due to different interpretations of the fifth precept of Buddhism. This is most commonly interpreted to mean: “Refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to heedlessness.” Though some interpret this precept to refer solely to alcohol. Alternatively, there are groups who interpret the precept as prohibiting alcohol and most drugs; not including cannabis. As the specific effects of cannabis don’t have as extreme effects on behaviour or thought as many other substances, many argue that cannabis should not be included alongside alcohol and other drugs. Various Buddhist groups use cannabis as part of ceremonies and personal rituals. Cannabis plays a large part in the Hindu festival of Holi. The festival of colour, participants often consume bhang (a ceremonial mixture containing cannabis) or simply smoke cannabis; most often via bongs or pipes. Some Hindu’s believe that the cannabis plant was created from Shiva’s own body, for the purpose of cleansing sins and bringing the user closer to Shiva.

The religious group most closely associated with the consumption of cannabis are the Rastafari. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when the Rastafari began using cannabis as part of their practice, but by the 1940s it was widely known and acknowledged. The faith recognises cannabis as being the ‘Tree of Life’ mentioned in The Bible. “...the herb is the healing of the nations.” - Revelation 22:2 The smoking of cannabis, through long glass pipes known as ‘Chalices’, is integral to group ‘reasoning sessions’ and is used to bring Rastafari’s closer to Jah (God). The counter-culture movement of the 1960s, particularly throughout the UK and US, utilised cannabis, as well as other substances such as LSD, for spiritual purposes. The ‘hippie movement’ occurred at a time of radical change and broke barriers, whilst horrifying conservatives, around the globe. Various drugs became both a tool and a symbol of the movement, with claims that the drugs’ mind-altering capabilities allowed people to access a different level of consciousness.

The phrase: “Turn on, tune in, drop out.” Timothy Leary 1966... became synonymous with hippie counter-culture and their new breed of drug-infused spiritualism; partially based off of various eastern faiths and philosophies.

HISTO RY

MEDICINAL USES

Cannabis has been amongst the most used medicines, across all cultures and nations, for the best part of 3,500 years; including civilisations as ancient as pre-Roman Catholic Europe. Research throughout the 1970s mirrors that of today, stating that were cannabis to be legal and available across the globe once again; it would account for a minimum of 10-20% of medication used, replacing many instantly. Dr Raphael Mechoulam estimated 40-50% of all medicines, were cannabis to be legalised, would eventually contain cannabis extract once its properties and benefits were fully appreciated (High Times, September 1982). Cannabis was once America’s undisputed king of pain medication, until the re-discovery of aspirin in the early 1900s. As cannabis has zero risk of overdose, compared to the high toxicity of aspirin, it was still preferred by many medical professionals for some time to come. But what about the high? From the limited writing available, it appears as though the strains of cannabis used in the past contained so little THC that some could barely be considered psychoactive at all. Additionally, a large proportion of the cannabis used within medicine during this time period would never have been heated, thus the activation process used to produce any high never would have occurred. Perhaps this explains

28

HEMP&CBDMAG

why from 1842 to 1900 cannabis made up half of all medicine sold within the US, with virtually no fear of its high. The active ingredient in cannabis, THC, was only discovered in 1964 by Doctor R. Mechoulam; previously researchers and doctors could not isolate exactly what made cannabis work, yet still attested to its medicinal properties. The committee on Cannabis Indica for the Ohio State Medical Society stated that: “High Biblical commentators (scholars)” believe “that the gall and vinegar, or myrrhed wine, offered to our Saviour immediately before his crucifixion was, in all probability, a preparation of Indian hemp.” (Transcripts, Ohio State Medical Society 15th annual meeting, June 12-14, 1860, pg. 75-100.)

In fact, the American Medical Association actually testified against the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act on account of the plant being known to have “so much medicinal potential” and “had never caused any observable addictions or death by overdose”. It would take another 29 years before American scientists would be able to research the medicinal properties of the plant.

HISTO RY

1978 ARTICLE There’s much debate around the medicinal use of cannabis in the present day, but did you know that medicinal cannabis was briefly legal in California during the 1970s? From 1978 to 1979, California implemented the “Compassionate Cannabis” program under their health department. Patric Mayers, a law student undergoing chemotherapy treatment, was a powerful driving force behind the law. Mayers’ personal testament and lobbying brought attention to the fight to legalise cannabis, for medicinal purposes alone, and was instrumental in this legislative decision. In 1976 Mayers’ doctors illegally advised him to use cannabis to alleviate nausea caused by his treatment. At this time Mayers weighed just 93lbs, as he found it almost impossible to eat at all. Patric was given the drug, completely free of charge, by local dealers and his fellow classmates; he quickly regained his appetite, whilst his nausea decreased dramatically. In 1981 the state attorney, responsible for the medicinal cannabis program, refused to allow the supply of federally grown cannabis, as well as police-impounded contraband. This state attorney’s decision meant that

doctors were unable to prescribe cannabis, that they were legally allowed access to, to their dying patients. In 1983 Mayers assisted in a campaign to reinstate, the still legal, medicinal cannabis as a treatment option within California; a campaign in which the LA times, amongst other media corporations and various high profile activists, were also involved. Compliance with California’s “Compassionate Cannabis” law lasted just a few months. Following this, a general policy of blocking access to the treatment returned in full force and continued for the following ten years. At this point the potentially life-saving law, having suffered refusals and political blockades, lapsed automatically.

HISTO RY

HENRY’S HEMP CAR

Henry Ford’s ‘ Biomass Car’, 1941, represented a revolutionary focus on alternative energy. Made from and intended to run on hemp, Ford’s prototype vehicle was widely renowned and wrote about by various publications; most notably ‘Popular Mechanics’ where the story was broken that same year.

One of Henry Ford’s first cars ran entirely on Hemp ethanol. The body was also cosntructed from Hemp plastic, which was 10x stronger than steel.

After much research and extensive experimentation, Ford found that herbaceous plants high in moisture, such as hemp, were best suited to biochemical digestion; the process by which fermented alcohol fuels are produced. It was these very same fuels that his ‘Biomass Car’ ran on. Around this time he theorised that hemp and other seed or vegetable oils could supplement a minimum of 10% of the world’s energy requirements. Interestingly, Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine, 1890’s, with plans to exclusively use vegetable and seed,

30

HEMP&CBDMAG

including hemp, oils as fuel. It was apparent to Diesel that these alternative energy sources would be infinitely more cost efficient and environmentally friendly. However, the gasoline industry had huge financial incentive to quash such energy sources; successfully lobbying for taxes to be increased on alcohol products and for the price of gasoline to plummet. Many at the time speculated, and continue to, that the 1920’s prohibition of alcohol and hemp that followed shortly after these events wasn’t coincidental in the slightest but a bid to maintain exclusive control of the fuel industry.

PHARMACY

WHY SHOULD PHARMACIES STOCK CBD PRODUCTS? Damien Bove - ADACT MEDICAL

I am writing this article from the position of somebody that has worked in community pharmacy, admittedly not for a few years, circa the year 2000 to be exact. When I graduated from Bradford School of Pharmacy in 2000 I went to work in the pharmaceutical industry, this followed 7 years as a pharmaceutical technician working on the front line of community pharmacy.

36

HEMP&CBDMAG

As a respected healthcare provider and the first line of medical defence in the community, the burden is put upon Pharmacy to only stock products that they can stand behind, that is ethical, effective and of good providence, on top of that, you have to earn a living directly from the goods that you sell. It can often be a difficult path to navigate. However, I strongly believe, and I hope that after reading this so will you, that CBD meets this criterion, if you purchase sensibly.

PHA RMACY

So what is CBD and is it legal?

CBD or cannabidiol is all over the popular press and all over the retail market these days, but what exactly is it? And if it's from marijuana or cannabis how can it be legal?

Well for a start it does not come from marijuana or cannabis, it comes from industrial hemp. Hemp is the plant that can be grown legally in most countries in the world, including the UK. It’s a licensed activity as we have to keep low levels of THC and CBN (these are the psychoactive components of cannabis and are illegal), CBD is on the same metabolic pathway as THC so plants that are high in CBD are conversely low in THC. Now CBD is the psycho-protective component and interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the Central and peripheral nervous system and in the immune system, via which it delivers its beneficial effects. So when we are selecting products to sell you need to be provided with the documentation and test certificates that show there is less than 1mg of THC or CBN in the final product. (more on this below) As pharmacists you will be aware of the regulations, a product such as CBD is clearly medical by function, and you would expect that it needs a medical licence to be sold, however the MHRA have publicly stated that as long as companies don’t make medical

So whilst the beneficial effects of CBD are well publicised we have to be careful not to make medical claims.

What does CBD do?

Well, this is a strange thing, everybody who uses CBD gets a very personal response to it, however, it's fair to say that it brings balance to the central nervous and the immune systems. Let me clarify, for people who have stress and anxiety CBD has been shown to lessen the symptoms of these two important conditions and help with the sleep disturbance that is well known to be associated with them. For those with painful conditions in some patients it’s been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. As for the immune system, it’s been demonstrated to help with overactive immune responses such as eczema and allergy it has been shown to calm down these conditions, and also help boost the immune system to fight of other conditions, and has been shown to reduce the side effects from Chemotherapy (I can vouch for this from personal experience).

These are the common uses for CBD: Pain, insomnia, better focus, muscle recovery, skin clarification, anti-inflammatory effects, etc etc

claims for the products they can be sold as food supplements (more on this is a little while).

HEMP&CBDMAG

37

PHARMAC Y How do I know which to stock? Not all CBD is created equal, there is a lot of misconception that all CBD is the same but this is simply not the case, the truth is that there are many different ways of preparing CBD extracts and creating final products. I will focus on oral drops in this article, but there are other products available such as edibles, creams, capsules, tablets, drinks, vapes, the list goes on.

I can think of at least four ways to make CBD oral drops: ∙ Hemp Juice (made from squeezing juice from a hemp plant) – can be quite bitter to taste and have low levels of CBD and other cannabinoids, although some have very high levels of cannabinoids, so don’t assume they are all low. ∙ Hemp Seed Oil (made from squeezing oil from the seeds) again can be quite bitter and the levels of cannabinoids can vary dramatically from supplier to supplier. ∙ Reconstituted extracts mixed in hemp oil, cannabinoids are extracted industry and then reconstituted in hemp oil, again taste can be an issue but cannabinoid levels are much higher and can be consistent.

What is the market for these products?

∙ Reconstituted extracts mixed in other oils such as MCT, cannabinoids are extracted industry and then reconstituted in MCT oils, taste is much improved and cannabinoid levels are much higher and can be consistent.

CBD is probably one of the fastest growing product segments in recent years, the products are highly effective, and there is good profit margin to be made, CBD infused products are all over the market and the press. They are being sold through a vast number of outlets, but fraud is rife in the market and the consumer knows this, pharmacies are well placed to sell their products as they are trusted professionals. Provided you do the research you can expect to sell a good quality product to a market eager to have a product they feel they can trust.

Getting to the bottom of CBD levels from the labelling can be quite a challenge, this is where as pharmacists you are at an advantage, you are well placed to decipher the labels and get the crux of the issue. Common things to look out for are: ∙ Oil weight is given not CBD, eg 1000mg CBD oil drops in a 10ml bottle when you read the ingredients the product is made of 1000mg of hemp oil, which probably contains between 2 and 15% CBD so the total CBD content is actually 20-150mg not 1000mg advertised. ∙ Products standardised to 30ml, again you can see two products that are both 1000mg, but one is 30ml so comparatively much cheaper, when you look one is 10% CBD so contains 1000mg (and is labels 1000mg/10ml) and one is 1000mg/30ml so the liquid itself is on 3.3% CBD ∙ Products just lie, they don’t give actual CBD content – this is very common unfortunate, so you need to demand to see test certificates, and you should validate them with the supplier.

ABOUT T HE S HOW

HEMP VS MARIJUANA Whats the difference?

The word ‘cannabis’ conjures up a variety of mental images. Mainstream stereotypes include everything from musical legends with joints hanging from their mouths, to loutish teens with bongs hastily forged with a lighter and a plastic bottle. Not many think of environmentally-friendly construction materials, clothing, or a legitimate and incredibly versatile resource. Decades of cannabis prohibition effectively cast a shadow over hemp and the knowledge that surrounds this truly remarkable plant. Confusion still lingers over hemp...is it legal? Does it get you high? Hemp encompasses a variety of cannabis sativa strains, bred not for any psychoactive benefit but its fibre, oil, and seeds. Hemp fibre is unbelievably versatile; one of the strongest and most sustainable materials used in construction, whilst also being a comfortable and durable material for clothing production. THC is the psychoactive chemical found across all cannabis plants. Strains of cannabis used for recreational purposes generally have between 5-30% THC at their dry weight. CBD is found in almost all strains of cannabis. This particular chemical has been gaining a large amount of attention as of late, with its array of properties beginning to be recognised by more and more people; CBD products are becoming readily available on the high street as the UK has begun to embrace the health benefits around hemp and CBD products. It’s now relatively easy to find CBD oils, vape liquids, beauty products, edibles and much more in shops. CBD is completely legal within the UK due to it having no mind-altering effect whatsoever. Cannabis is generally grown for recreational purposes. Due to the environment in the UK, this almost always occurs indoors. Growers do not allow the cannabis plant to complete its full growth cycle, instead removing the buds once they’re at their optimum size. Male cannabis plants are commonly removed, to prevent fertilisation that lowers the THC content of the female plants. Those who choose to grow hemp generally grow outdoors in large crop formations. Hemp harvests are generally processed for

commercial use; the oil, seeds, and fibres are used in a wide variety of products. Hemp and cannabis plants are visually distinguishable, it really doesn’t take an expert eye to tell the two apart. Cannabis plants have a dense and bushy form, with far wider leaves than the hemp plant; the total height of cannabis plants tend to be considerably shorter than hemp plants. Hemp leaves are far skinnier than their cannabis counterpart, which are concentrated higher up the central stalk of the plant. Hemp production is increasing worldwide, as awareness of its benefits spreads. Acres upon acres of land, many of which were previously used to grow tobacco, are now licensed to grow hemp across many countries. The hemp plant is incredibly hardy, requiring minimal water whilst

increasing soil quality. Growing at an unusually fast rate, growing hemp can be very profitable with a quick profit turnover. Hemp can even be used to revive baron land. Damaged, scorched, or low-quality ground can be greatly improved following a single hemp harvest; allowing crops to be grown on said land. This practice can be life-saving, particularly in poorer areas where famine can be devastating.

ABOUT THE SHOW

What can you do with hemp? CBD OILS

CBD, or cannabidiol, was first discovered in the 1940s; though at this time, unable to isolate the genetic structures within cannabis, scientists presumed it to be a precursor to THC. It wasn’t until cannabidiol could be extracted from the structure as a whole, in the mid-1950s, that it became apparent that such assumptions were incorrect; CBD was entirely non-psychoactive, unlike THC. It was at this point that the battle to legalise CBD began as a separate compound. Today CBD is completely legal here in the UK, and the industry built around it is growing exponentially. This form of cannabis oil can be found on the high-street, is advertised within the mainstream media, and has a grip on the public’s attention. CBD can be used and consumed in a variety of ways, and for a whole array of reasons. Tinctures, capsules, sprays, creams, vape liquids, and edibles are a few of the ways cannabidiol can be used; though even more are likely to arise as the market continues to grow and expand. CBD oil is commonly used to help with the relief of anxiety, depression, and stress. It’s also often used by athletes to aid in muscle growth and healing, as well as acting as a sleeping aid. Users also report using cannabidiol in place of over-the-counter painkillers, claiming it as a more effective solution to simple aches and pains. However, it is unlawful in the UK to make medical claims surrounding CBD, as it is classified as a food supplement NOT a medication. CBD has also assisted a good deal in decreasing the stigma surrounding cannabis as a whole. The mainstream acceptance that cannabidiol has beneficial properties means that the cannabis plant is viewed in a whole

CBD FOR INHALING

The vape industry has seen rapid growth over past years, so it’s not surprising that the vape and CBD industry would become linked. Vaping cannabidiol has become hugely popular in a very short amount of time. For experienced vapers, using CBD in this way is incredibly easy. Those who already vape understand vape products, the hardware used, have an idea of reasonable pricing, and most likely have some sort of insight into the market. The only difference would be picking up CBD liquid rather than the usual nicotine/nicotine free vape liquid. But those who have never vaped before are also choosing to vapourize the CBD they’re using. Vaping CBD, rather than using tinctures or capsules, can be more affective as it allows a faster and higher absorbtion rate. Many claim that the effects they feel are almost immediate, particularly those using these products for pain relief. Unlike CBD edibles, which would have to enter the bloodstream via the digestive system, vaping CBD means the active ingredients enter the bloodstream in a faster process. CBD liquids designed for vaping may also include additional flavourings, which make the experience more enjoyable for

new light. Whilst cannabis users were, and continue to be to a lesser extent, stigmatised; cannabis products are now sold in large chains of high-street shops. Celebrity endorsements have also helped to push cannabidiol awareness and enthusiasm surrounding CBD products. Nate Diaz has been at the forefront of endorsing cannabidiol recovery products within the UFC. MMA is one of the most physically punishing sports in the world, with major injuries and lingering pain coming with the territory. For this reason, it’s not hard to imagine why such fighters, particularly those competing at the top level within the UFC, would turn to CBD for natural pain relief. There has also been a long-standing problem of such athletes becoming addicted to painkillers, to which Diaz has put forward CBD as a solution. The market value of CBD is expected to exceed $2 billion by 2020. It’s clear that the cannabidiol industry is on the rise, with no signs of slowing down, but many have questioned how the classification of these products has affected its reputation. With limited research published on the medicinal aspect of CBD, personal anecdotes and recommendations often drive sales (particularly when those endorsements are from pro-athletes). The future of CBD however, looks as though it will continue to be bright. Further awareness and acceptance, along with new and exciting products, testimonies from users themselves, and further research should only help to drive the industry further to the top.

many people. Vaping liquids Vaping CBD, rather than can be found in almost any using tinctures or capsules, flavour you could imagine; can be more affective as it from fruits to confectionary and everything in between. allows a faster and higher These flavourings, combined absorbtion rate. with variable dosages, make for a customised vaping experience that appeals to many long-time vapers and those who have never vaped anything but CBD. Some users may not feel confident using tinctures or capsules in public, and vaping can be a solution to this. Since CBD does not have a distinctive smell, it’s possible to vape in public without anybody knowing that it’s anything other than regular e-liquid. As the vape industry continues to adopt CBD, more and more people learn about the possibilities of cannabidiol. Those who previously would never have considered using any form of cannabis product may notice new CBD products being stocked in their local vape shop and become curious. Older customers who made the switch from smoking to vaping later in life may also now become exposed to CBD, where they might not have been before the vaping industry became involved. Cannabidiol can be particularly helpful for these older customers, with pain and arthritis being common reasons for people to begin using CBD in the first place.

ABOUT T HE S HOW SUPERFOODS

by body-builders.

Hemp has a wide variety of uses, and hemp seeds are even considered a superfood. This is for good reason, as the consumption of these seeds can provide many benefits. One of the most known benefits of hemp seeds is the very high protein content. The protein derived from hemp contains all nine amino acids, and has a far higher protein concentration than chia and flax seeds which are well known for there high protein. These foods have been popular in the vegetarian and vegan community for decades, but now health foods including hemp are becoming more and more popular with larger groups of consumers. Hemp foods are very easily digested, so are hugely beneficial for those with digestive problems. They’re a good source of soluble fibre, which forms a substance similar to gel; a vital source of nourishment for good bacteria within the gut. These bacteria also help to regulate cholesterol levels. Hemp foods contain more protein than meat and fish products. For this reason those trying to build muscle, hemp foods can be incredibly useful and sometimes more effective than the traditional high-protein diets used

HEMP COSMETICS

Hemp and CBD cosmetic products are becoming increasingly popular. You may have noticed ingredients lists on your cosmetic packaging changing to incorporate these, and it looks as though it’s set to continue. Usually listed as cannabidiol or hemp oil, they’re becoming buzz words within the beauty industry. With greater interest in natural and holistic products, hemp fits the brand identity so many are now striving for. It’s ability to create a strong dematological barrier, retain the skin’s natural moisture, prevent inflammation, and improve hydration make it a strong competitor in the skincare world. Hemp’s ability to regulate cell multiplication, affecting the skins sebaceous glands, means it can be an effective treatment for dry skin, ezcema, psoriasis, as well as acne. Cannabis-derived cosmetics have existed for decades. The difference is that such products were once found mostly on stalls at festivals, they’re now on the shelves of cosmetic companies all across the UK. Both high-end and high-street stores alike are stocking hemp oil cosmetics that are flying off of the shelves. It’s not just the skincare world that hemp is breaking new ground in. The oil’s omega acids make

Improved immune health is another documented benefit of these foods. With essential fatty acids, and other acids not often found in most foods, hemp foods have immune boosting properties. This can be especially important for those with immune deficiency problems, as well as those with pre-existing conditions that make them vulnerable to illness and viruses. Those dermatological disorders may stand to benefit a lot from hemp foods, increasing blood levels of essential acids that help to regulate the skin. High-protein and fat hemp foods can also be hugely beneficial in helping with weight loss. It’s high fibre content means people don’t become hungry as quickly, and can help to supress appetites throughout weight loss. These foods boost energy and work to speed up the body’s metabolism, all of which aid in healthy weight loss. Many diabetics are also becoming aware of hemp superfoods, as they work to regulate blood sugar. Containing omega 6 and 3, these foods can be a healthy addition to anybody’s diet. The risk of heart disease, the number one cause of death across the world, can also be decreased by consuming hemp superfoods. The nitric oxide, produced by the amino acids within these foods products, caused blood vessels to dilate and release properly; leading to lowered blood pressure, which reduces the

Hemp’s naturally high protein levels promote cell health, making it a very effective step in the quest for naturally healthy hair; as well as lash and brow growth and thickness. Many users swear by these products, with formative studies supporting the data which points to their benefits. Estee Lauder became one of the first mainstream brands to launch a hemp cosmetics line. Their ‘Origins’ brand proved highly successful, with the companies website saying: “the highest grade, locally grown cannabis and marijuana” is used in the production of all of their products within this line. Many beauty editors have noticed the shift in attention towards hemp cosmetics. The general interest in natural and holistic products has had a huge impact on pushing these products to the forefront of consumers’ interest. The conversation surrounding the legalisation of cannabis has also pushed such products into the spotlight. Hemp cosmetics do not contain THC (or a negligible amount) and as such do not have any psycoactive effect. But the discussion around recreational legalisation, as well as the legalisation of medicinal cannabis, means that the stigma is falling even further away from cannabis as a whole. For many, an image of a cannabis leaf on packaging could once have caused raised-eyebrows and suspicion. But now a far greater proportion of people understand the difference between THC and CBD, and as a result are open to learning about its

ABOUT THE SHOW BUILDING MATERIALS

One of the many uses of hemp is within construction. From concrete to insulation, a large proportion of the hemp grown within the UK has been used for this purpose in recent time. An alternative to traditional building materials, hemp can match the technical quality and structural integrity of such materials; whilst far exceeding them in terms of sustainability.

persuasive factor for contractors to choose hemp for the structures they build. Of course, an element of the high cost associated with hemp is how limited its production really is. Whilst there are a number of hemp farms across the UK, it stands to reason that there are not nearly as many of these farms as there are concrete production facilities. Larger scale hemp production within the UK would decrease the cost of such materials dramatically, whilst increasing the market competition between such hemp and traditional building materials.

The higher taxes many have proposed on materials contributing to global warming would also make hemp a far more attractive material for contractors to select. Materials that propagate human-induced CO2 emissions are controversial in some circles, yet continue to be the standard across buildings within Britain. Increasing the cost of such materials would While the hemp alternative to concrete takes weeks to be ready for use, mean hemp building materials became a more than viable alternative compared to the hours that concrete takes; it is far more sustainable and choice, free from tax and viewed favourably by the public and vocal environmentally-friendly. The wood-like core of hemp plants (shiv) can also environmental groups. be used in place of timber, once properly processed. In an increasingly polluted world, one of hemp’s main benefits is superior Ian Pritchett is the most known specialist to have built hemp constructions airflow. Regulated airflow within properties constructed using hemp in the UK. In 2012, his business created £10 million in profit, with 50 materials increases overall health of occupants. This is especially beneficial commercial and 200 residential structures built. for those suffering from respiratory conditions; such as emphysema and asthma. Whilst hemp construction materials pose a real opportunity for hard-wearing, sustainable structures to be completed; the cost of doing so Hemp has the potential to save occupants money on household bills, is a huge barrier. The superior insulation that hemp provides would save increase health and promote healthy lifestyles, Hemp could become the occupants a sizeable amount of money on heating costs, potentially cheaper than other materials as environmental taxation methods are £20,000 over a 50-year time frame; though as this saving would not benefit pushed through. What’s essential for its overall success is its increased the companies building these structures, this is not a particularly production across Britain.

Many of the materials commonly used in construction work are shockingly harmful to the environment, with concrete accounting for 5% of CO2 emissions globally alone.

HEMP CLOTHING

Hemp clothing has existed for millennia, but it may be time for it to go mainstream once again. Hemp fibre is one of the strongest naturally occurring fibres known, at 3x the strength of most cotton. These plants have been used to create fibre for around 10,000 years, and has been valued for its durability and warmth by generation after generation. Its mould-resistant properties make it especially long wearing, with added UV resistance; meaning when coloured it fades at a far slower rate than the vast majority of clothing on the market today. Hemp plants requre zero pesticides to yield the huge harvests they produce, as well as requiring minimal water. Each crop cycle helps to nourish the ground its grown within, as well as the roots helping to fight against erosion. Hemp crops absorb more carbon dioxide than trees, making them incredibly beneficial to the planet. Their far faster growth rate makes them an excellent candidate for restoring damaged ground. Hemp can be planted, in vast swaths, over scorched land to return it to proper health. Many have branded hemp the ‘miracle crop’.

Levi’s original iconic jeans were actually crafted from hemp.

The fibres versatility is also hailed by many fans of hemp garments; with hemp cotton and hemp silk being produced for diversity within the fabric ranges.

Until the 1920s, hemp textiles were used to make 80% of all clothing within the US. Over the past 60 years, controversy relating to cannabis has damaged the reputation of hemp, despite hemp being its legal counterpart. When hemp crops are grown, they have practically no value in the illicit drug trade and are not used in recreational drug protection. In

fact, in Tudor England landowners were required by the crown to grow hemp; used for naval equipment, mass paper production, as well as fabrics. George Washington also encouraged hemp production, with the Declaration of Independence being written on hemp paper. Levi’s original iconic jeans were actually crafted from hemp. Levi Strauss was originally making hemp canvas tents; after witnessing their strength and durability, he decided to embark on creating his iconic clothing brand. It’s clear that hemp was once unequivicolly recognised for its incredibly useful material properties. Of course, hemp is still used for clothing production; though at nowhere near the scale it once was. Clothes made from hemp fibres actually become more comfortable over time, rather than becoming worn quickly like many of the cheaply made garments people purchase today. The more hemp clothes are worn, the softer they become; whilst standing up remarkably well to repeated wash and wear. It’s also considered a breathable material, as human perspiration is absorbed and released very quickly by the fibres. Hemp is naturally antimicrobial, meaning it does not retain unpleasant smells at anywhere near the level most fabrics do, as well as being one of the few materials that doesn’t release micro-plastics when submerged in water. Micro-plastics are suspected to become a major problem to human health as more and more are released into our water. As well as being an environmental hazard, micro-plastics that enter the human body are released each time most clothes are cleaned in a washing machine. Hemp clothing avoids this problem entirely.

ABOUT T HE S HOW CBD GROWING

Most cannabis strains contain Cannabidiol alongside Tetrahydrocannabinol but the percentage can vary greatly between different strains. With the popularity of CBD as a food supplement, many strains have been crossbred to produce practically no THC. Such strains cause no psychoactive high and are used to create products that are legal within the UK and Europe. CBD can be obtained from both the cannabis plant and hemp plants. The variety and way in which it is grown depends largely on the legality of the country its grown in. In areas where cannabis is legal for growing (often in US states where both recreational and medicinal cannabis use has been legalised), it's more common for CBD to be extracted from mature cannabis plants. In the UK it is possible to obtain a hemp growing license or a medicinal cannabis license. If a person only has a hemp license, they are legally bound to only use the stalk and seed; meaning they cannot, under current law, extract CBD.

In the UK it is possible to obtain a hemp growing license or a medicinal cannabis license.

PARAPHERNALIA

Cannabis has been used in a variety of ways for a great many years. Whilst simple joints or spliffs, cannabis rolled with or without tobacco in common rolling papers, and edibles are popular ways of consuming cannabis; the array of paraphernalia that has grown and developed over the years is an exciting chapter in this plant’s long history. One of the first recorded instances of paraphernalia being used dates back 5,000 years ago in Romania. Basic ‘smoking cups’ containing burnt hemp seeds have been found in burial sites across the country. Around this time, cannabis was a popular medicine in China; often used in the treatment of malaria amongst other diseases and illnesses. It’s believed that Europeans originally discovered cannabis’ psychoactive effects after burning various plants in campfires, soon afterwards transitioning into burning it in the form of incense and inhaling its smoke. It was during the 15th century that Europeans witnessed Native Americans smoking tobacco in pipes, it was at this point that they began to smoke cannabis in the same way.

• CO2 extraction is usually considered the most professional and efficient way to extract CBD from cannabis or hemp plants. Carbon dioxide is used at high pressure, at a very low temperature, to isolate and preserve the oil. This method requires expensive equipment and a good knowledge of the process, but produces highly potent oil that's free of chlorophyll and other potentially harmful adulterants.

As hash became more popular, bongs and other forms of paraphernalia sometimes adapted to suit this change. Cannabis vapourisers made a huge splash in the market when they first started to be produced. Whilst cannabis smoke is generally considered to be less harmful than tobacco smoke, traditional combustible forms of using cannabis can lead to severe lung damage and respiritory problems. As people have become more and more health conscious over past years, vaporisers have soared in popularity. While the initial price can sometimes be expensive, the fact that only small elements need to be replaced (unlike gauzes and the hassle of cleaning bongs and pipes out regularly) means that they can be a relatively cost-effective alternative to many other forms of paraphernalia. The lightweight and discreet nature of vaporisers creates a whole new cannabis smoking experience, one that had never really been seen before previously.

cannabis was a popular medicine in China; often used in the treatment of malaria

Cannabis was prohibited in the UK and US at this time; such groups broke and questioned drug laws and caused phenomenal controversy in doing so. Skilled glass blowers began to produce bongs and pipes with designs fitting for the era. Colourful, trippy designs became popular and was considered its own art form by many.

54

• Ethanol extraction is often used to create cannabis oil suitable for use in vaping devices along with various other products. However, this method destroys naturally occurring plant-waxes, which are sometimes considered to have health benefits. • Olive oil can be used as an extraction agent. This method is often favoured by those creating cannabis oils for personal use, due to the low safety risk of the process. This makes it the method of choice for sometimes inexperienced people. Cannabis oil created using olive oil should be stored in cool, dry places or risk perishing far quicker than oils made using other extraction methods.

The plants from which CBD extraction takes place can be grown both indoors and outdoors. Hydroponic equipment is used to facilitate indoor growth, and is essential for production in areas too cold for these plants to naturally grow as well as allowing more control over the growing environment.

It was, rather predictably, during the 1960s that cannabis paraphernalia really experienced a boom. Large countercultural groups consumed large amounts of cannabis and were always on the lookout for new ways to do so.

There are various methods of extracting CBD from cannabis/hemp plants, and not all are created equally. Some methods, such as those that incorporate butane or hexane into the process, can leave toxic residues that compromise human health.

Dab rigs work on the same premise as vaporisers, vapourising cannabis ‘shatter’ or ‘dab’ for a healthier alternative to smoking. These rigs can be incredibly complex and aesthetically beautiful in design (as bongs and pipes have also become in some circles). A butane torch is generally used to heat the cannabis wax at incredibly high temperatures, the vapour is then inhaled by the user.

Many predict that cannabis’ future lies in vapourisation. With the practice being safer and cheaper overall, many long-time users are moving over to this side of the market. Whilst many enjoy the classic simplicity of a pipe or bong, and some prefer the experience of inhaling smoke over vapour; it’s not uncommon for people to own both smoke and vapour cannabis paraphernalia.

ABOUT THE SHOW In theory, cannabis could be prescribed to anybody who’s condition/conditions could be helped by the medication, and who have previously exhausted all other treatment options.

MEDICINAL

On the 1st of November 2018, medicinal cannabis became legal in the UK...but what’s really changed? The law allowed cannabis to be prescribed to a select group of people. Whilst the conditions that would qualify for a prescription were not legislatively outlined, patients with select conditions were expected to be the most likely to receive the new forms of regulated medication. These conditions included rare forms of epilepsy in childhood, adults suffering the adverse effects of chemotherapy, and those suffering from multiple sclerosis. In theory, cannabis could be prescribed to anybody who’s condition/conditions could be helped by the medication, and who have previously exhausted all other treatment options. It cannot be prescribed by any GP in the UK and is only available from specialists in these areas. Many were disappointed by this decision, as they felt it could block the path to treatment for many patients across Britain. At the very least, it takes longer to be assessed by a specialist clinician because of the number of patients under them; and so could mean waiting inordinately long periods of time to receive potentially life-altering treatment. There have also been problems related to NHS clinicians not wanting to put themselves at the forefront of these changes, becoming hesitant to prescribe cannabis medication at all until a precedent is set. Legalisation followed years of debate and lobbying. Much of this lobbying came directly from the parents of sick children denied treatment who had, in some cases, been prosecute for illegally purchasing the drug out of desperation to help their children. At the time of writing, nobody has been prescribed medicinal cannabis paid for by the NHS. The only prescriptions have been from private doctors, the majority of whom have not been identified. The huge cost associated with such treatment has shocked many, with thousands of pounds buying just a few months worth of medication for parents desperately in need; some of which are children.

With this currently being the only way to obtain medicinal cannabis, some parents feel as though they have no choice but to financially burden themselves to get ensure their children do receive treatment; many are unsure how long they can viably pay and this, of course, adds stress to an already difficult situation. Many believe that the situation will improve when the first NHS prescription script is written. At this point doctors, many argue, will feel comfortable enough to prescribe cannabis without the possiblity of losing their license and having any potential complications with treatment labelled as their fault. The conversation and changes surrounding the legalisation of medicinal cannabis fuels the hope that recreational legalisation is on the horizon. Campaigns for the legalisation of cannabis for recreational purposes have continued for decades at this point. Medicinal legalisation is, for many, the first sign that this may become a possibility. With cannabis being the most widely used illicit drug across the UK, a position it has maintained for a very long time at this point, its often argued that criminalisation does more harm than good. Measures to prevent citizens from possessing cannabis have failed time and time again; even conservatives such as William Hague commented “-the war on drugs has been lost-”.

C O MPLIANCE

A WALK THROUGH COMPLIANCE CANNABIS PRODUCTS IN THE UK

We have been brought up in an era where Cannabis was illegal in the UK, I shan’t go into the pros and cons of that here but that was our reality and what we were all used to. We all knew somebody who liked to smoke some ‘weed’ but it was definitely not openly sold in the shops. Then came along CBD, or cannabidiol, in 2015 and the world shifted a little. I was running a contract manufacturing facility and I was asked to make a CBD vape, so I trawled through the legislation and decided that it was indeed legal. I even got a letter from the home office telling me it was as long as THC contamination levels were below 1mg in the final product.

60

HEMP&CBDMAG

C OM PL IA NC E Fast forward to 2018 and its been the year of the CBD breakthrough, despite a blip between December 2016 and September 2017 when it was decreed a medical product that needed a license to be sold, the sale of CBD has been ticking along nicely, but now we are fully into the green boom, and its everywhere and only going to get more mainstream.

Now the trick is measuring your level of contamination and the home office believes that final product testing in most cases is not sufficient as analytical techniques are not accurate enough to define the level low enough to determine that there is less than 1mg, so you generally need raw material testing and then calculate to determine your finished product levels.

The products that are out there are growing every day, vaping has been the driver but its being left in the dust with; oral drops, tablets, capsules, gummie bears and other sweets, beer, chocolate, protein powders, water, cosmetics and a whole raft of other products are coming soon.

Now the legislation stipulates delta-9-THC, but does not mention delta-8-THC, so can we put out a delta-8-product and make a killing, unfortunately not, as you fall fowl of the psychoactive substances legislation. Also the home office considers the acid for of THC (THCA) as part of your total THC count, as THCA will degrade into THC readily.

But lets have a look at what’s allowed and what’s not allowed, because there is very little direct legislation, but a lot of indirect legislation.

So your products need to be tested at source and documented, full supply chain visibility is critical to this, you have to know where your supply is coming from and you need to trust your supplier and I would recommend getting your own testing done.

Medial claims

The controlled drugs act and compliance.

This is simple, don’t make any, ever, right on to the next issue... seriously if you make medical claims even vague ones, use medical imaging such as doctors etc you will be in breach of selling an unlicensed medicine, if you claim any cancer curing properties you will be in breach of the cancer act and can face criminal sanctions. You can’t make them in advertising or even on your website, even linking to articles on other sites may bring you in breach so be very careful. And cannabinoids for animal use are illegal, your selling an unlicensed medicine. There are no exceptions.

The controlled drugs act lists products that are illegal, if you compound is listed on this it’s a controlled drug and you need a license to stock, manufacture and distribute it. CBD is not on the controlled drugs list, delta-9-tetrahydrocabidol (THC) and cannabinol (CNB) are, now a lot of CBD products do contain these two compounds so are they illegal, in short answer not always. As logs as their presence there is a contamination and not deliberate and they meet the following criteria your OK: • Less than 1mg in the finished packaged product (it’s an absolute limit not a percentage, don’t be confused by the 0.2% rule that’s for growing, not for finished products) • Its not easily extracted from the blend • The product is not designed to delivery controlled drugs

C O MPLIANCE Flowers and Plant Material

This is one of the best grey areas out there, flowers buds and plant material that is high in CBD and low in THC, how about these - in most cases the THC levels are low but total THC is well over 1mg, so it’s a controlled drug, people quote the maximum 0.2% level for THC, but this only covers growing and processing not sale to the general public. If your importing plant material or handling plant material you need a home office license, or again your breaking the law. The home office also considers plant materials, that are bud or flower to be marijuana by definition so always illegal, regardless of THC levels. I have seen some products out there that are stalk material (or at least claim to be), the home office has issued guidance to the police, if it looks like marijuana, smells like marijuana, then treat it as marijuana, they are going to seize it and maybe arrest you. It will be up to you to demonstrate the product is stalk material, that can be done by microscopy, however the home office’s current position is they don’t care it marijuana, although that position is being challenged.

Novel Foods

Another interesting area is the novel foods legislation, if you bring a product to market in the EU that is for food but has no history of being used you have to file a novel food application, this is an expensive process, and nobody has done it yet. So if you sell a novel food without that its prohibited and should be removed from sale. So for products for consumption you need to use a product that complies with this legislation, CBD isolate does not and you cant use it in oral consumption products, its fine for vaping and cosmetics as they are not consumed. Full spectrum cannabinoids are fine up to 15% total cannabinoid levels as they are similar to hemp oil that has a history of consumption in food. But above 15% your on shaky ground. You have to demonstrate that your not over concentrating the CBD our of proportion to other cannabinoids and your not over processing the materials, 2.5 processing steps (very tricky to define) is usually accepted.

So if you sell a novel food without that its prohibited and should be removed from sale.

C OM PL IA NC E Cosmetics

I will keep this quick as it’s a massive area of legislation, any cosmetic sold in the EU has to be safety assessed by a qualified person, have a stability test conducted on it and the technical file submitted to the EU, I know of 6 that are going through the process and non that have finished it, so are your cosmetics legal, could be that its been done but you need to ask your supplier, and you cant just get a compliant base and add your CBD you have to do the full assessment for every formulation change or even in some cases change of supplier.

Best Practice

So whats some tips for best practice: • Build a relationship with your supplier, its not a commodity, if you change your supplier constantly to get cheaper supply you will come unstuck • Ask for certificates of analysis for every batch • Do your own testing • Keep good batch records and testing records • Keep edibles in child resistant packaging • Don’t sell to or for children or animals • Don’t make medial claims ever • Keep samples from each batch you manufacture

ADACT MEDICAL LTD COMPLIANCE PROFESSIONALS

Adact has been in the business of providing regulatory compliance service to the medical product industry, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, herbals and supplements in one form or another since 2004. We developed into the largest compliance agency in the UK, and possibly Europe, for electronic cigarettes. By providing affordable compliance that meets the needs of both regulation and the market we attracted 42% of the electronic cigarette brands notified in the UK. We are applying the same philosophies to the Hemp and CBD world, affordable and effective compliance that satisfies the regulatory forces and the market needs.

Damien Bove - ADACT MEDICAL

64

HEMP&CBDMAG

Our Journey into CBD

Adact Medical has a long history of working with CBD. Damien the Chief Regulatory Officer at Adact was in the business of contract manufacturing supplements, liquids and E-liquids when he was approached in 2014 to make a CBD vape product. After satisfying himself that the substance extracted from industrial hemp was not illegal, and we received a confirmation letter from the Home Office, whose main concern was the same as it is today, THC and CBN levels. We set about formulating the first CBD vape in the UK market. We did not invent CBD vape as they had been introduced to the USA market a few months before.

PROFILE There are stockpiles of artificial cannabinoids around the world left over from them being widely banned. These stockpiles find there way into CBD vapes. CBD should not be giving you a buzz.

Fast forward to the end of 2016 when the MHRA effectively banned non licensed sales of CBD products the story went quite until September 2017 when the MHRA published clarification that re-opened the market for unlicensed sales provided medical claims are not made, and Adact was once again engaged by companies for testing, validation of supply chains and helping companies formulate new products. Having ceased involvement in contract manufacturing in 2015, we concern ourselves with compliance, product development and the development of new extraction techniques.

CBD product testing: what you need to know.

As we conduct CBD product testing for a lot of companies we have seen some common issues cropping up, the first trend we see is just as you think it might be, when customers send us their own products to test we find the CBD levels are pretty much where they should be, but when companies send us somebody else’s products to test we find that the levels can often be lower than they should be. We put this down to companies that go to the trouble of getting products tested are more likely to get their manufacturing correct. You may have your own theory.

Another issue that we have seen more often than we would like, is with vape products, when we test a vape product and can’t find any cannabinoids at all, yet the product is reported to be effective, ‘its very good this, gives a real buzz’ we conclude that these products contain artificial cannabinoids, other wise known as liquid spice. We get about one a month like this. There are stockpiles of artificial cannabinoids around the world left over from them being widely banned. These stockpiles find there way into CBD vapes. CBD should not be giving you a buzz. We do see products that have high levels of CBD and CBN in them, these products are illegal under the controlled drugs act. The other thing to note about cannabinoid testing most testing is a single test and gives you a good idea of CBD and other cannabinoids levels, however in order to be accurate the testing needs to be done in triplicate and the results averaged, this obvious increases the cost of testing. This is why you need to look at single tests with the benefit of the doubt, they are good for quickly establishing product quality. Where results are borderline, you need to do triplicate testing.

HEMP&CBDMAG

65

PROFILE Legal Levels

When we test final products its often shown that the THC and CBN levels are bellow 0.05%, however this does not demonstrate that the product is legal to sell. Lets for argument sake talk about a 10ml oil drop with 0.05% THC in, 10ml x 0.96 (the specific gravity of MCT) would have 9.6gm or 9600mg 0.05% of this is 4.8mg which is nearly 5 times the legal limit of THC. The legal limit is 1mg in the final packaged product. As the limit of detection is usually between 0.05 and 0.03 you need to test the raw material and then calculate your levels to finished product, this compliments the final product testing. This is also true of products like drinks that are high volume with a small amount of CBD in them, Limits of Detection can make standard analysis very difficult.

Supply Chain Visibility

When you bring on a new supplier you need to be sure heavy metal and pesticide analysis has been done. In a pharmaceutical world this testing would be done on every batch initially, with some relaxation once a track record of good results has been seen. But for supplements you need to at least do it once a year or once per harvest. You can only be sure that this is done if you can be sure of the origin of your CBD? If your buying through a broker, which most people are you need to be sure that the source of your CBD is the same if your relying on past results to use current batches. Has your supplier changed the source of material, does your broker even know. There is no substitute to knowing your supply chain and the providence of your product. If your broker is unable to support that then you need to be doing more work on your supply chain. Supply chain and GAHP (good agricultural and harvesting practice) standards are critical to maintaining product quality, it’s a big subject so we will leave it there for now.

What material can I use?

There are many different terms for CBD (and hemp) extracts. If you don’t want to fall foul of the Novel Foods Legislation you need to be using the correct materials: CBD isolate – cant be used in food products without submitting a novel food application (which nobody has done) but can be used in vape and cosmetic products. Full Spectrum – depending on how it is extracted may but suitable for food use, if its extracted via C02 you are boarderline but it may be over-processed so fall foul of the novel foods regulation Full Spectrum – distillation extraction, good for food use

66

HEMP&CBDMAG

The rules in this area are Grey, however the Food Standards Agency will be publishing rules on it in 2019/2020, then we will all have clarity.

There is no substitute to knowing your supply chain and the providence of your product. If your broker is unable to support that then you need to be doing more work on your supply chain.

Cosmetics

Cosmetics are tricky, they need to be safety assessed, have stability studies done and the technical file presented to the European Cosmetics Portal, very few of the cosmetic products being sold in the EU have been subject to this process so should not be sold. I have bounced through the regulation and compliance, there is a lot to discuss so get in touch, or come and see us the CBD & Hemp Expo, we can help you navigate the CBD landscape. www.adactmedical.com

PROFILE

How we see the future

We are very aware that we are only just at the tip of the iceberg in a business sense and that CBD will be a product that is going to expand into many different markets. It has been recognised for thousands of years as having a variety of positive therapeutic benefits, but there has been a questionable reputation associated with products associated with cannabis . Increasingly though, this picture is changing and legislation limiting THC content to less that 0.2% has brought CBD products to the masses. CBD is widely accepted as one of the active ingredients, which can help improve the wellbeing of many people. The marketplace is expanding through many sectors, including the health trade, as well as pharmacies, but as most CBD products are sold as food supplements no health claims can be

made. There is comprehensive information available on the internet and for people who want to know more, it is always recommended to guide the client to conduct their own research to identify the potential benefits and enable them to make informed decisions on what will provide them the best results. CBD Manufacturing keep ahead of the competition in the marketplace, our team of specialist staff are constantly researching the areas where CBD can be used. It is our intention to continue to provide up to date information to the attention of our clients ensuring that their range of products expands and therefore their presence in the market increases, leading to greater profitability and longevity in the marketplace.

BEAUTY Hemp & CBD Beauty Products On The High Street The multibillion-pound cosmetics industry was the first to recognise the benefits of using a variety of phytocannabinoids as an active ingredient, not only for the intrinsic benefits but also for the secondary benefits such as that of hemp oil which is heavy in omega3 and 6s (ideal for moisturizing dull skin). It is no wonder that the variety and breadth of cosmetic products are increasing exponentially across all sectors and levels of the retail market. The consumer is becoming increasingly educated in the benefits of hemp and CBD products and the cosmetics industry is viewed by many as the leader in ‘normalising’ cannabis products to the masses.

IT’S NEW TO THE MARKET AND ALREADY CBD IS HAVING A MASSIVE IMPACT ON THE FITNESS INDUSTRY With its anti-inflammatory claims and aiding in pain relief, it’s no wonder a lot of fitness enthusiasts are incorporating this into their diet and supplementation. Here we talk to NRGFUEL Sports Nutrition athlete and bodybuilder, Matt Sandle. How long have you been training? I have been training since I was 14 years old and competing for the last 5 years. What made you get into bodybuilding? I was a tall, skinny lad and wanted to fill out and put some weight on, but most of all I wanted to give myself more self-confidence. How often do you train? I train 4 days a week and try to get in a Sunday morning session in as well. What is your greatest achievement in bodybuilding? My greatest achievement in bodybuilding would be winning the NABBA Mr UK Class 1 title and being sponsored by one of the most reputable sports supplement companies in the UK. What supplements do you use? My number 1 supplement is NRGFUEL BCAA and Glutamine, followed closely by NRGFUEL Anabolic Transporter, NRGFUEL Zinc and ECO CBD oil, all of which I use every day. My protein of choice would be NRGFUEL Anabolic Whey.

HEMP&CBDMAG

What advice would you give anyone getting into bodybuilding/fitness? My advice to anyone getting into bodybuilding or fitness would be to do it for yourself! Don’t feel pressured in to it by social media posts of supposedly ‘perfect’ bodies that you see everywhere nowadays and don’t be intimidated by other gym users. Most of all enjoy it; getting fit, looking good and staying healthy lifts your mood and makes you feel good about yourself. Why did you start to use ECO CBD oil? I had heard about its use as an aid for recovery in that it has anti-inflammatory purposes and claims to help with pain relief, this in return lets me train just as hard the following day. Another big plus for use of CBD oil is that I find it helps me sleep better and this aids natural growth hormones, which the body needs to repair and build muscle. When do you take ECO CBD oil? I use CBD oil twice a day. On training days, I use it 20 minutes after training and then I use it 5 minutes before bed. On none training days I use it 5 minutes before bed.

Hi and a warm Welcome, We created Genius Hemp in 2017 to spread the word about CBD across the expat community of southern Spain, many relocated to Spain for their health, where CBD “has been seen to ease” such issues even more. We realised that our heart was focussed on spreading the word about CBD first and creating a business second. Network marketing by its very name ‘network’ does that, and so Genius Hemp was born as a unique Network Marketing Company acting more as a ‘family’ spreading the word. From this point Genus Hemp has flourished, helping hundreds of people discover CBD and its benefits and also helping people earn an additional income, in some cases changing people’s lives totally both in their wellbeing and their income. A win, win, win situation where our customers feel the benefit, our ‘GH family’ feel good about helping and they also earn an income. We are passionate about our products and our ‘GH Family’ which is growing daily across Europe. Of course this would not be possible without an excellent, high quality product. This again took time to accomplish, having tried and tested several manufacturers we are pleased to offer one of the highest quality range of products in Europe, produced in Switzerland, complying with EU legislation including lab reports for every batch manufactured. When we heard about the Hemp and CBD Show we didn’t have to think twice about being here and bringing together as many of the GH family as possible and of course introducing Hemp Man our own GH superhero to the public whose aim of course is to spread the word about CBD. We would all love to meet you at the show, so come and see us for a chat on stand A80. Have a great show.

Fast forward to today with my little team behind me I am earning double from Genius Hemp to what I am earning in my shop. I gave notice on my shop in December and now work full time without the overheads. I am so excited for the future’

Frankie Penfold – ‘Genius Hemp is not my first Network Marketing company so I was very cautious. What I earned in 5 months took me 18 months with other companies !. Earning instantly from team sales is a game changer, and having amazing quality CBD oil speaks for itself’

HEALTH FOOD

HEALTH FOOD SHOPS GOLDEN GOOSE

CBD “From the Black Sheep of the Family to the Blue-eyed Boy”

This is the statement which can be said about the recognition and acceptance of CBD within the Health Food and Pharmacy business. It must be said that I for one was most concerned about the potential acceptance of CBD in the British marketplace, although I researched the acceptance in the USA for well over two years, with its undoubted benefits. I am very pleased to say that after caution and doubts, CBD is now seen as a product to be freely sold in the Health Food shops as well as increasingly in Pharmacies too.

110

HEMP&CBDMAG

CBD is being sold freely on the internet on the likes of Amazon and Ebay, but it is essential that the consumers understand that the CBD generally sold there is different to what is being sold by the majority of other outlets like the Health Food shops. Paste is viewed as one of the rawest forms of CBD and is often referred to as crude, it generally delivers less cannabinoids to the consumer. In actual fact if you were to purchase a 1000mg CBD Paste it may only contain 150mg cannabinoids, as opposed to the 10% Full Spectrum CBD which should deliver 1000mg of cannabinoids. Health Food Shops and Pharmacies to the great extent have elected to sell the ‘Full Spectrum’ in their outlets, yes, it is more expensive, but if the consumer wants to see results, they have to be prepared to pay more to get the best quality products. It is recognised by many Health Food Shops that the additional business which is being bought into the shops is fast becoming a very important part of generating a significant new income stream.

HEALTH F O OD

STUART YATES

WORLDWIDE ESSENTIALS

HEALTH FOOD INDUSTRY EXPERT

Without a doubt CBD over the coming months and years will with natural organic growth and awareness, become a leader in the Health Food Market.

Innovation of products in the Health Food Industry has been stagnant for a number of years, people have tried to find for the next ‘new thing’, but to the great extent nothing has risen as the “new leader”. This was until CBD was launched, and yes in those early days many people doubted and exercised caution, but once that the large health food chains took the bold steps to launch, the industry has not looked back. Without a doubt CBD over the coming months and years will with natural organic growth and awareness, become a leader in the Health Food Market. What many people still do not realise is that it is a product which is adaptogenic and will continue to developed into many new areas. Most people currently use either droppers or capsules to take advantage of the benefits of the CBD, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. like many new products the consumer has a limited of knowledge of CBD, many people might not fully understand or appreciate the benefits of CBD. Our

intention over the coming months is to expand awareness through education and increase product knowledge, so that people have the base understanding to research and identify the best products for the best results. We all know that most people who are associated with the Health Food Industry are passionate people who have a desire for their customers to get the best results for their needs. This is not about making medical statements and claims, it is about helping people to lead a better lifestyle. Also, for the retailers who are selling CBD, this is about a product which leads to regular repeat business, it will, if sold for the right reasons bring back to your outlets, regular and happy customers. Yes, the people will buy their additional CBD products, but also if they are happy, they will always be looking at buying additional un related products as additional trust in your service and recommendations are embedded.

If you are looking at stocking CBD always look at the right reasons for stocking, never be frightened about asking whether the manufacturing facilities have accreditations like ISO certified. Do they have full traceability? Can they supply a COA? Remember that if the supplier is genuine, they will be able to supply all documentation to confirm that their products are genuine. Your customers deserve the best and by asking a few extra questions at the start you can guarantee that they are getting that and in turbulent and uncertain times, your customer is your future. CBD and Health and Wellness go hand in hand, lets embrace the product and the future will be better for your customers and your business. CBD is here to stay.

SHOW G UIDE

about our sh ow

The Hemp & CBD Expo will be the first of its kind in the UK. A trade show solely dedicated to hemp products and the CBD industry that is experiencing a rapid rise in recent years and showing no sign of slowing down. The show itself will mainly be centered around what we believe to be the most important aspect of any show - It’s exhibitors. There will be established American farms such as GenCanna, and Bluhen botanicals to household industry names in Blue Moon Hemp and Charlotte’s Web. Some of europe’s big hitters will be making the trip across the continent including Dinafem Seeds, Sanlight, and Marry Jane. We also will

120 HEMP&CBDMAG

be flying the flag for the UK with a healthy roster of Britain’s best and newest launched brands such as Harmony, BHO Hardware, Edge CBD and many more! With hemp products being embraced by vsome of the UK’s top industry sectors and and influx of serious investment in an industry that’s lived too long in the shadows, the discussion of CBD products has created a demand for more information and more variety of products in a country that is constantly warming to the idea of natural healthcare options. Media outlets are fast becoming infatuated with the CBD buzz, following the bold statement made by parliament,

with the legalisation of cannabis products for medicinal use on November 1st, 2018. The public have been made privy to more and more positive stories of cannabis products playing a pivotal role in people’s lives, a stark contrast to a previous generation of negativity and taboos.

SHOW G UIDE Our plan is to create the first major hemp trade show in the UK, conducted in a professional, business environment in one of the top exhibition venues in Europe - The NEC Birmingham.

our p lan Our plan is to create the first major hemp trade show in the UK, conducted in a professional, business environment in one of the top exhibition venues in Europe - The NEC Birmingham. We will have two main objectives for our joint B2B & B2C show Firstly, to bring together a community of businesses that, in our view, is in vital need of networking opportunities and exhibitions such as ours to showcase their brand to potential stockists and distributors across the country and the world. Our second objective will be to educate a public seeking knowledge and information on what can be a confusing industry to those at first glance. With this in mind we are committed to providing a welcoming atmosphere to visitors and have lined up some fantastic speakers at our seminar stage ready to inform and educate those in need! We will be reaching out to our vast network of suppliers and retailers to come and experience a ‘one stop shop’ event to facilitate new business opportunities for one of the fastest growing industries in the UK.

‘COMPLIANCE CORNER’ In 2016, the MHRA made a statement of opinion to classify CBD as a medicine threatened businesses who worked in the field of cannabis food supplements.

The Cannabis Trades Association was formed by a number of developing businesses supplying the growing demand for CBD and hemp-based products in the UK. These founder members came together to create a body to eliminate bad practice, enhance transparency and introduce basic regulation within the market. This would ensure that future businesses could continue to trade in legally and ethically in the hemp and CBD market.

142 HEMP&CBDMAG

The CTA UK met with the MHRA on 3rd November 2016. Six delegates were present from the CTA UK at the agency's headquarters in Victoria, London. The meeting was opened by Gerald Heddle, Director of Inspection, Enforcement and Standards who thanked us for bringing to the agency's attention just how many people were using CBD for quite serious medical conditions. The aim of the meeting was to convince the MHRA that we could establish a set of rules, guidelines and standards that would enable the industry to comply with its requirements.

PROFILE

The meeting led to an understanding by the MHRA; the Cannabis Trades Association was a professional body trying to unite a fledgling industry behind a set of common standards and industry practices. The CTA has and continues to work with the MHRA to ensure that a fair standard is produced and allows for the sale of CBD in the wellbeing food supplement market, up to an agreed daily dosage, and a medicine above that dosage level. We obtained legal advice including Counsel's opinion which we shared with the MHRA. The CBD market in the UK is presently worth several million pounds a year. The CTA UK's main purpose is to work with the industry and government to ensure this market continues to grow, providing safe, effective and tested products for consumers and job security for its workers in the industry. We work with all companies in industry to advocate the case for a fully regulated market and talking to the UK government to develop a more liberal regulatory framework. Up until now the CTA has focused on the growing CBD market which includes hemp and hemp products which, are after all, legal definitions of the same plant - cannabis. The CTA works alongside other organisations such as the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), Food Standards Agency (FSA), and the Cosmetic Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA). Within the association, we have a compliance officer, Guy Coxall whose objective is to support members and to ensure that they comply with all EU and UK laws, policies and regulations, alongside the rules and regulations of the CTA UK. It is imperative that the entire industry complies with the relevant legislation. We are all responsible for proactively identifying, evaluating, mitigating and reporting on compliance risk across our industry. This is in all our interest so that our industry can flourish and thrive into the future. We cannot allow past mistakes to be repeated.

CALLIE BLACKWELL

Callie Blackwell is an advocate for a healthier and more holistic lifestyle as a means to prevent many diseases, including Cancer.

W

hen Callie’s eldest son was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in 2010 and then with a rarer, more aggressive cancer, Langerhans Cell Sarcoma only 18 months later, she embarked on a long, steep learning curve. Since then, an eight year journey through the complexities of paediatric chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bone marrow transplants to diet, nutrition, herbal and holistic medicine has brought her to realise that the body has the ability to heal itself if given the right nutrition and care.

Tell us about your background and how you’ve ended up becoming a cannabis activist? I grew up in a small Norfolk town where everyone knew everyone and had very little to do. I left high school in 1996 and got married in 1997. In 1999 I had my first son, Deryn. In 2004, I was married for a second time and had my second son, Dylan. During my adult life I have worked in a slaughterhouse, as a domiciliary care worker, a reservist in the British Army (as a Combat Medical Technician) and for many years as a bouncer. I started my own business in July 2010. Unfortunately, the new business venture was short lived as Deryn was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia on the first day of trading. This led to how I became one of the UK’s well known Cannabis Activists. After receiving such a tragic blow, we embarked on a 4 year journey to hell and back. In 2012, Deryn was diagnosed again with a much rarer and more aggressive cancer Langerhans Cell Sarcoma in his tonsils. Unfortunately Deryn’s journey with Cancer was far from straight forward and it ended with Deryn having four bone marrow transplants in 10 months, each one failing.

In December 2013, Deryn was moved to an end of life hospice with three days to live after ALL conventional treatment had apparently failed. Once we we there, I chose to give Deryn Cannabis and he didn’t die. Deemed a miracle by the medical professionals, I found myself being contacted by people who wanted the same ‘miracle’ as myself. It was totally by accident that I found myself now being so well known for assisting people with illegal cannabis oil.

I chose to give Deryn Cannabis and he didn’t die. Deemed a miracle by the medical professionals, I found myself being contacted by people who wanted the same ‘miracle’ as myself. I feel that I have a duty to tell as many people that will listen about the healing benefits of Cannabis and I spend every day trying to educate and broaden the minds of those who are only just finding out about Cannabis and what it is capable of.

I have found myself being asked to speak on behalf of many who can’t speak out for fear of their children being taken in to care by social services if they are discovered to be treating their loved ones with Cannabis. I can’t help but fight for justice. I think I was born to be an activist.

You recently wrote your book, The Boy in 7 Billion. How has it’s publication effected your role in the industry and what are your hopes for it’s success? Do you have plans to publish more books? The release of my book back in April 2017 changed my role in the movement dramatically. Before I published my book, I was very much helping people behind the scenes. I hadn’t told anyone publicly that I gave Deryn Cannabis and the profound effect it had had. Most people still believed Deryn’s recovery to be a miracle. This in itself was because I too was still too scared to announce what I had administered as Deryn was still a child and the real threat of Social Services loomed over me. I decided to write my book as a way to get the story across without misrepresentation. The media have a habit of misinformation and I knew that I had to get the WHOLE story out in my own

INTERVIEW words before coming out about what I had done. I couldn’t keep Cannabis a secret any longer as I knew that my coming out could possibly help thousands more people than me staying quiet. I have had hundreds of messages since releasing my book, the majority tell me just how much hope I have given them. How they now use Cannabis to help themselves and how they too now have their own success stories, because of my honesty and willingness to put my neck on the line. That in itself is success. If my book could have helped just one person, that would be a success but to know just how many lives have been positively effected, it’s truly humbling. I get asked a lot if I’m going to write another book. I would love to but the problem is that when I wrote my first book, I had the luxury of not being well known and so I had the time to spend writing every day. Time is not a luxury I have any longer. My days are taken up helping people and for me, that is a better use of my time. For now, who knows what the future will hold for me. But I would love to write again one day.

You recently moved OUT OF THE UK. How is that going for you and what was the reason behind this move? Moving away from the UK was a very hard decision but one that I felt I had very little choice over. I was struggling to work full time, see my children AND help the hundreds of people who needed my attention every week. I was working 9am -5pm, getting home at 6pm, going straight to emails and not going to bed until 4am. Up again at 7am to start all over again. My weekends were taken up by trying to see my children and attending events. I couldn’t cope any longer, something had to give before I had another nervous breakdown and I knew that I could never stop helping those who came to me so work had to go. I am very fortunate to have people in my life who do their best to look after me and help me. My boyfriend offered to support me for a while until I could get on my feet and regain some balance in my life. I took him up on his very generous offer and I’ve been here a few months now. Now the time I get with my children is all about them and they no longer have to play second

fiddle to my activism. The law played a part in my decision too, the country I have moved to is a little more relaxed on Cannabis. CBD flowers with THC under 1% are sold widely here and smelling Cannabis in the street is quite normal and acceptable.

Your opinion on the rise of CBD in the UK and whether you think it will help the public warm to cannabis overall as a medicinal answer? I am very pleased to see a rise in alternative medicines as a whole. CBD being the most acceptable now which is amazing to witness. I worked for CBD Brothers for 18 months and to be truthful, I was sceptical about CBD. I had always thought that you MUST have THC as well as CBD to make the medicine effective. THIS is still my opinion BUT I now understand that even a very small amount of THC allows the medicine to be far more effective. The entourage effect is vital and why I urge people to only acquire whole plant extract and not CBD isolate

I chose to give Deryn Cannabis and he didn’t die. Deemed a miracle by the medical professionals, I found myself being contacted by people who wanted the same ‘miracle’ as myself.

suspended in a carrier oil. The results I saw from customers who were taking the products I so proudly made were incredible! Stories that I never thought I’d hear from just a legal CBD product. Working for a CBD company really changed my mind about the powers of high strength CBD when accompanied by small amounts of the other cannabinoids. I definitely think that the rise in CBD products and availability in the UK with help the public warm to cannabis as a medicine overall. I had been carefully watching public opinion on Cannabis as medicine before I published my book, to me timing was imperative. When my book came out and I went on This Morning to talk about my experience, the majority of the public hadn’t really heard of Cannabis as a medicine, let alone accepted that it was OK to give a child. I have been slowly watching public opinion sway in favour of Cannabis ever since. I am now seeing more and more people who initially were just in favour of CBD oil (because it is legal) now understanding just how important THC is. The legality played a huge part in it’s use, many people who understood that THC was also necessary, wouldn’t go near it but would happily

INTERVIE W take CBD oil. I see the tides changing though and I’m finding more and more who are willing to break the law every day. This is awesome.

Your opinion on the recent updates to cannabis laws in the UK and the direction its moving in? The recent changes to the law in the UK surrounding Cannabis are nothing but a an attempt to placate the citizens of the UK whilst slowly putting together policies to ensure that those in power personally profit from its prohibition. Because of stories such as my own, my friend Hannah Deacon, mum of Alfie Dingley and Countries around the world legalising left, right and centre… people of the UK have come to understand that Cannabis is medicine that actually works and we should all have equal access to it. People have started to come out about the benefits they have found from Cannabis and the government can no longer lie to us about it’s properties. With Theresa May’s husband being the largest investor of GW pharmaceuticals and Drugs minister Victoria Atkins husband owning the land on which GW grow 22 tonnes of ‘Skunk’ every year, they had to give the public something. Cannabis has been available on prescription for about 12 years, in the form of Sativex. A preparation made from 1g of a 1:1 full extract cannabis oil, suspended in alcohol. Since this drug is in schedule 4, you’d think that access would be no problem. Except there are only two NHS Trusts that Sativex is available free on prescription - Chelsea and Westminster and another in Oxfordshire. All other NHS trusts simply can’t afford up to £500 a bottle that GW charge them. If you go private, you can of course have unlimited access to Sativex, so long as you pay. The new law means nothing for people who need Cannabis as medicine. Many who have been approved STILL don’t have access and those who have been granted access, many have found that Epidiolex (the CBD based GW Pharmaceutical drug) loses its efficacy early on.

Honestly, I don’t like the way it’s all heading because with legalisation comes more restrictions, more laws and less of what the people actually need. I think that Cannabis activists from around the world need to ensure that we all know what it is we’re asking for and ensure that we do not stop until we get exactly what it is we want. NO half measures.

What Innovations / developments in our industry would you like to see? (now and in the future) Honestly, I don’t think about this. I see so many great things happening surrounding cannabis from some incredibly skilled craftsmen and innovators that I doubt I could think of anything that hasn’t already been done. What I want to see now and in the future is integrity and honesty. That is

something that isn’t in abundance in this industry.

Is there a model of another country / US state that you feel you’d like the UK to adopt? No. I think they had a great idea that was unfortunately hijacked by the government. On the outside it looks great in the US and Canada but actually when you dig deeper and talk to activists from these countries, they are deeply upset with the way things are going there. Any country that allows me to grow as many Cannabis plants as I wish, to consume in any way I wish is a country I with to emulate. I do love the Barcelona Social Clubs though. I’d love to see them popping up all over the UK.

Don’t wait. As soon as you find out about Cannabis, do it. Please. Those who thrive the most are the ones who have started Cannabis at the beginning, the ones who change their diet and lifestyle and those who are willing to commit to Cannabis for the rest of their lives which means growing it and becoming self sufficient.

What are your hopes or expectations for the Hemp & CBD Expo and do you see events like this helping the industry? I’d like to see a huge turn out of people who have never thought about consuming Cannabis in any way before. I’d like to see many people attending because they wish to be educated. I also hope that this event goes a long way to educate people with a vast array of accurate and helpful information. If done correctly, and I have a very good feeling that the guys behind this event have done a sterling job, this event could spark a huge surge in CBD becoming even more accepted than before. Showcasing what is available can’t be anything but positive for the industry.

If there’s one message you’d like to convey to parents who might find themselves in a similar situation to what you experienced what would it be? Don’t wait. As soon as you find out about Cannabis, do it. Please. STORIES OF A HOW THE FREEMAN BRAND CAME TO BE

ies

-By Dimitri Freeman Jamaica has been derived from the Arawak word 'Xaymaca' which means the 'land of wood and water' or the 'land of forest and water'. Freeman stems back to the Xaymacan people of the Taino territories of Xaymaca [Jamaica], my Great Great Grandfather was named Freeman because he was one of the 500 original Tainos left in Jamaica in his present time. The Native Indians were given their freedom not to be slaves anymore because since the arrival of Columbus it had been a long and never-ending struggle for the people of Xayamaca. Freeman’s wife to be was my Great Great Grandmother Crockshank [Maytoza] from the Crown Eagle Territories of Nigeria; our crown is of the snake eating its self and in the talons of the crown eagle’s claws. The stories passed down to me through Grandmother Mary who was Grandmother Crockshanks grandchild, told that the tribe we came from was a very connected people and loved Mother earth and our ways of life very much, we were a resistant force and to change, and we loved our relationship with all life within the Jungle and Sea. Our tribe was removed from our natural birthplace and environment, and felt the consequences of others greed, due to our warrior reputation all our men including boys within our tribe were eliminated to void our existence. It was our women that carried the strength and our love, fighting every day to continue the blood of our peoples, many of our women found refuge in the neighbour tribes, many were also sold to South Africa, and our Great Great Grand Mother sold herself to a family called the Crockshanks from Scotland.

PROFILE Great Great Grandmother Crockshank [Maytoza] had green eyes and long black unusual hair, quite different regarding where she came from. She was a very beautiful and skilled woman, she knew her arts in indigenous medicine, also how to make pottery and tasty chocolate which the children never missed. Her skills to learn were noticed and she was given the position to serve inside the master’s house. It was not long that she was sent to Jamaica from Scotland to live her new life in the Crockshanks province. There she met Great Great Grandfather Freeman and it was not long before my Great Grandmother Susan Freeman was born to continue the bloodline through 9 of her children [Our Grand Parents].

So it is now that our name Freeman carries the entire story so we may appreciate today and the present it brings. Always live positive each day is new to adventure your soul and the beauty our Mother earth shares to us. It is this story that blesses the blood with fire and righteousness, medicine must be at its most high and most pure, it is these stories and sacred histories of our bloodlines that keep us strong, and identity that brings the light forth so others may feel its purity and be healed.

MARY’S SEEDS SUPPLYING SHEFFIELD W

e're a seed supplier based in Sheffield, UK, and with over 15 years experience in the industry, we ship seeds all over the world from the big banks like Barney’s Farm and Green House, as well as smaller, boutique companies like Mean Beanz and Gene Seeds. We are the official UK and EU supplier for Elev8 Seeds from the West Coast of the US, and they supply strains bred from genuine Cali classics such as Gelato and Gorilla Glue. We were also the first to bring Harybo by R-Kiem to the UK and it’s now an underground classic over here! Some of the seeds we stock are completely unique to us and we take a quality over quantity approach, paying careful attention to everything we choose to add to the store. We love visiting Spannabis in Barcelona every year. Good weather, good people and good times spent in the clubs every night - one of the best weekends of the year, easily! We also make it out to other festivals across Europe such as Mary Jane in Berlin and Expogrow in Irun. We’re very happy to be exhibiting at the first Hemp & CBD Expo this year alongside our close friends, BHO Hardware - it's great to see a new event in the UK. If you visit our online store we do our best to make it easy to find what you're looking for. Feminised, regular and autoflowering, we stock them all. We have a 'Cannabis Cup Winners' page and there's a 'Find Your Ideal Strain' feature, and you’ll be able to select whether you want full packs or single seeds of everything - you only pay for the exact amount you need. Seeds are sent out in sturdy plastic tubes, and if you’re concerned about them being discovered we offer a ‘stealth’ delivery service where everything is packed inside a sealed

DVD. For those based in South Yorkshire we also have the option of picking up orders from local headshops to avoid having anything sent to your house. We take payment by card, bank transfer and cash in the post. What’s more, every order qualifies for free seeds and the more you spend, the more you get! At checkout just select from our ever-changing selection of free seeds. If you're wanting big amounts, we have the option to purchase certain strains in bulk at discount prices, and if there's something you'd like that we don't have, it's always worth getting in touch to see if we can source it. And it’s not only seeds we sell - we also stock educational books, CBD oil and other smoking products such as Backwoods blunts and terpene-infused Lift Ticket papers.

We’re very happy to be exhibiting at the first Hemp & CBD Expo this year alongside our close friends, BHO Hardware - it's great to see a new event in the UK.

PROFILE But back to the seeds... we recently released a new line with SWgenetX that we're super proud of. After the craze of dessert flavoured strains we brought out some savoury-tasting varieties: Roast Dinner, Chinese Takeaway and Jamaican Jerk Curry - take a look! And if you don't know exactly what you want, we have some Mary-curated packs such as the Cookies pack with a variety of Girl Scout Cookies strains, or the Jedi pack with Star Wars-themed autoflowering strains: White Yoda, Skywalker and Jedi Kush! So whether it's the old classics like Jack Herer and Northern Lights, or new superstars like Zkittlez, Bruce Banner or Sunset Sherbet, we're confident Mary's have got you covered.

CBD by Dinner Lady The Number One Choice We understand that for customers to enjoy the benefits of CBD they need a product which suits their lifestyle. Our products are not for medicinal use, they are lifestyle supplements which aim to complement general health and well-being. Straight from the source. From hemp extracted CBD isolate, to finished products. Unlike many players in the industry, ‘our products’ means our products - we do not co-package. We believe the idea that, “If you want a job doing right, do it yourself.”

Over £1m Investment In CBD We have invested over a million GBP in a versatile, state of the art in-house manufacturing plant to accommodate our ambitions. Our recent investment has enabled our specialists to work in a cutting-edge scientific environment. All great products start with a great idea. We understand the importance of research and development to devise the most advanced applications in the industry.

Why Choose Our CBD? In this industry, consumer trust is everything. We

guarantee over 99% pure CBD isolate meaning consumers are getting what they pay for, free from unwanted surprises. Many products in the market currently are not meeting this level of purity. VAPE

WHY (AND HOW)

VAPESHOPS

SHOULDADDCBD

TO THEIR MIX

We’re going to call this “vape shop explosion, version 2.0” THIS alludes to the coming and current expansion of the CBD and hemp market and how vape should react and grow with it. History always repeats itself and we need not look too far back to see the explosive growth of vape shops and how the competition (and the market) continued to challenge the entrepreneurs How do you fix this? You become better- different - than your competition. You stand out not by offering lower prices, but by offering a truly unique experience combined with unwavering customer support. In the U.S. President Trump recently signed the Hemp Farm Act which clarified some of the nebulous laws and regulations of CBD (Cannabidiol). Industrial hemp was removed as a Schedule one controlled substance and is now classified as an “ordinary agricultural commodity.” This was long anticipated and long needed since many U.S. vape shops were technically selling the product illegally. Even though medical research and anecdotal stories shared the benefits of the crop, many states took a hard line approach. Shops were raided and inventory confiscated. Some vape shop owners selling CBD were jailed. Yet, even with all the sabre rustling and intimidation, no one was convicted for selling CBD in their vape shops.

186 HEMP&CBDMAG

The rules in America are now more clear, but here in the UK and throughout Europe we still have a patchwork of laws and enforceability of those laws. For right now let’s move forward with the understanding that you may legally sell CBD in your vape shop and let’s see what the future may hold.

I have been a proponent of CBD since 2014 when I did a Vape Radio interview with one of the pioneers in vapable CBD.

A longtime fan I have been a proponent of CBD since 2014 when I did a Vape Radio interview with one of the pioneers in vapable CBD. Since then I have experimented with CBD in all forms and have been encouraging vape shops to expand into other product lines in addition to vape. My typical recommendation is CBD, followed by glassware (for the growing and mostly legal alternative market), and essential oils.

V AP E But there are ways of offering CBD right and there are ways to do it less right. There is no wrong, unless you sell bogus products from inferior companies and do a bad job explaining it to your customers. The typical buyer and market for CBD products is different than vape products and should be marketed in a different way. As a general rule your “typical” vape customer is 1) male, and 2) from age 18 to 40 years of age. Since the beginning vape has catered to the Millennial market, which is now older than when the industry took off, and the Gen X market, AKA, “middle agers.” The older demographics, the Baby Boomers, were the last to adopt and embrace vape and the stories of finally kicking tobacco addiction after decades of trying, are many. But your CBD market will probably skew older, and in many cases, much older. They may, in fact, know nothing about vaping or find it offensive or intimidating. They may be Baby Boomers and beyond and know nothing about CBD other than what they read.

Your new opportunity: CBD only shops Imagine this scenario. Instead of a vape shop focused on helping people stop smoking or offering the latest and coolest flavors, imagine that your shop is more consultative in nature. Your new avatar, ie, ideal customer, walks through the doors and is greeted by one of your team. “How may we help you today?,” they ask and the customer tells them what brought them in. Aches and pains. Sleeplessness. Jitteriness. The list of reasons is long. Your greeter then escorts the customer over to a more private area to talk about their needs, since in many cases, it may be embarrassing or uncomfortable. Your “CBD consultant” fills out a form and comes up with the best products that you offer and in the form that best fits their needs.

A CBD only shop can do much higher volume than most vape shops and be easier to run and maintain.

On one set of shelves sits topicals and creams. On another sits gummies and the like. On another you offer oral drops and another offers vape products. You even have one for animal and pet products.

Why would you take this consultative approach? Your customer is now a client and will appreciate and benefit from the personal treatment. They will know you care. They will probably be more loyal and also more likely to offer referrals. You will also more easily collect better metrics on your clientele and be able to market to them better as well as fine tune your more salable products. This is a total paradigm from the vape shop mentality and model. No more “cash & carry” customers; no more deadbeats hanging around all day buying nothing and no more customers that will shop down the street to save a nickel. A CBD only shop can do much higher volume than most vape shops and be easier to run and maintain. Training will be crucial in this new model since the education your team shares is vital to the betterment of the client. You are not offering medical advice, but if you take pride in your training and what you offer, you should consider it just as important.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS CONCEPT, PLEASE LET US KNOW SINCE WE OFFER A TURN KEY MODEL TO HELP YOU TRANSITION. AND IF YOU THINK THIS MODEL MAKES NO SENSE, WE’D LOVE YOUR FEEDBACK. Norm Bour is the founder of VapeMentors and creator of the VAPE U and Vape Shop Certification online programs. They offer services & resources for anyone in the vape space, including vape shops, online stores and e-liquid brands and work with an office in Europe. They also work with CBD and helping retail shops convert over from vape. He’s also the host of Vape Radio, the largest vaping radio show in the world with more than 1.3M downloads.

AMERICA’S CUTTING-EDGE HEMP PRODUCTS HAVE A SPECIAL SOURCE:

Located in Golden, Colorado, Boulder Botanical & Bioscience Laboratory (BBB Labs) researches and develops original, effective formulations and delivery methods of cannabidiol (CBD). The company uses only CBD-rich medical-grade hemp that’s organically grown at its own farm subsidiaries without genetic modification or the use of harmful synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers. There’s a hemp revolution happening in America, and it’s happening at high altitude. Headquartered in the largest hemp-producing state in America, Boulder Botanical & Bioscience Laboratory (BBB Labs) takes a careful yet creative approach to manufacturing products made with hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD). Our Colorado-based company, which has a vertically integrated seed-to-shelf supply chain, is led by a team with more than 25 years of experience in nutraceuticals and manufacturing as we create private-label CBD formulations and develop hemp-derived products with unique delivery methods for the health and wellness space. BBB Labs launched in 2015 in Boulder, Colorado. We now make our hemp products at a medical-grade, 26,180-square-foot manufacturing facility in the city of Golden, which is a short drive west of Denver, better known as the “Mile High City.”

At BBB Labs, we specialize in development of hemp-derived products for humans and pets, and large-scale contract manufacturing of CBD-based products for clients in the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and dietary supplement industries. BBB Labs’ extensive manufacturing capabilities allow us to create capsules, tinctures, gums, effervescents and other custom formulations of premium, compliant and certified full-spectrum hemp products. BBB Labs maintains full control over our product quality and processes: instead of outsourcing growing, drying and extraction of hemp, we oversee the entire process from seed to shelf. All of our CBD products are held to strict quality and testing regimens to ensure consistency, safety and efficacy. Beyond that, all hemp extracts are delivered to customers with a full cannabinoid profile as well as a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from reputable third-party laboratories.
