Taking a walk anywhere on the Mornington Peninsula is a joyous experience, but the Millionaire’s Walk along the clifftops from Sorrento to Portsea is simply thrilling. Besides being gobsmacked by the awesome views across Port Philip Bay and beyond, one gets to step into the backyards of the Peninsula’s rich and famous. As well as marvelling at their beautifully landscaped gardens, you’ll get an insight into how Melbourne’s elite spend time at their summer mansions with their private jetties. The two kilometre walk is relatively easy and usually takes about two hours. Start your walk at the Sorrento Beach rotunda and stroll along the Esplanade towards Portsea. You’ll pass the historical stream train terminals before mounting the clifftop and ambling through the Millionaires gardens. On a clear day you can see Queenscliff on the other side of the bay and you’ll also observe the Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry coming and going.

Take the Millionaires Walk

6

www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

You’ll even spot the Millionaires out in their leisure craft. Sorrento was the location of the first white settlement in Victoria. Just before you finish the walk in Portsea, you will come across a white trig station and a stone monument. This is the place where on the 9th of March 1802, Acting Lieutenant John Murray, commander of ‘HMS Lady Nelson’ took possession of Port King, which was later renamed Port Philip Bay, for the British Crown.. He marked the spot by hoisting the Union Jack – the first time the flag was hoisted in Australia. If you’re thirsty after the walk, you can always drop into the Portsea Hotel for a refreshment or two! Millionaire’s Walk isn’t the only great walk in the Sorrento area, there are plenty of others. Treasures abound

26 years ago Marlene Miller had the definite feeling we did not have enough art in our beautiful township. She started at 106, which was due for demolition, restored the building and created a venue for good quality art. Originally selling paintings, she gradually evolved into selling the beautiful old pieces of furniture, china, gorgeous cutlery, now making a resurgence due to it’s superior quality, jewellry and continued with artworks. After 10 years she had outgrown the building, “It was actually bursting at the seams when the beautiful limestone guesthouse at 136 came up for auction and so we moved and for the next 16 years lived in this wonderful space until deciding to build on the empty block next door.” Marlene says with delight. Finished November 2010, the new building houses all the wonderful, old, interesting pieces bursting with history and beauty, as well as the fabulous jewellry which has become their main attraction. “We have incredibly beautiful pieces back to the Georgian era, as well as newly made pieces by Melbourne’s top jewellers including Simon Kushnir and Stephen Pascoe. It is lovely to know that the young girls have grown up knowing this is where they will buy their engagement ring. We are now on to our third generation of lovely customers who are enjoying our beautiful jewellry.” sorrento village life Summer 2011 - phone 9708 8222 or 5906 5771

Miertje ‘awe-inspired’ by upturned world

Looking forward to another Mornington Peninsula visit for the opening of her upcoming exhibition, Miertje Skidmore says “I love coming over there, and one of these days I think I’ll come over and stay”. Miertje Skidmore is exhibiting October 1 – 30 at Manyung at Sorrento. A huge attraction for the artist is that the peninsula is framed by water, from which many of Miertje’s abstract works draw their inspiration at her Victor Harbour home in South Australia. A fascination for the natural world drives Miertje’s art. Her subject matter comes from beyond a passive observation - as it may for landscape artists - it is inspired by active investigation and discovery. Since she was a girl the artist has never been happy to sit and watch, she’s been out turning over rocks, logs and other matter to examine underneath: “Marble cut open or ancient wood sliced, a fossilised leaf or insect, can leave us humbled and awe inspired, at the majesty of nature.” Miertje’s works are often drawn from her microscopic eye, with pieces more than a metre in width or length

12 www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

often representing just a couple of square centimetres of our “upturned” natural world: “the most incredible colours can come from that moist environment”. Miertje Skidmore aims to convey a timelessness in her paintings, taking inspiration from the “power and mystery of the earth we live in that often goes unseen, yet goes on in its amazing diverse beauty without audience”. “This is what I hope to convey in my work. I have worked in a range of media mostly in acrylics, pastels and oils; I have a great love of coloured glass, and now paint in high gloss mixed media; as it allows me a means of expressing all these diverse inspirations.” Large format canvases enable Miertje to create striking works with explosions of colour and motion. Born in Western Australia, Miertje has been painting for over 30 years and her paintings have been purchased by many private and corporate collectors including NAB, Princess Monika of Germany, and collectors across China, Norway, Holland, England, Germany, the USA and here in Australia. Exhibitions change monthly, call or visit the gallery for details of Spring & Summer showings. Manyung at Sorrento, 113a Ocean Beach Rd, Sorrento. Ph:03 9787 2953 www.manyunggallery.com.au

A tram to the beach

Imagine, after enjoying a day on Sorrento’s Back Beach, being shuttled by tram car around to the Front Beach to enjoy a gin and tonic at The Baths before heading off into the sunset for dinner at one of Sorrento’s many fine establishments. Sounds idyllic doesn’t it? Well that’s how they did it during the late 1800’s and into the early 1900’s. During the late Victorian period, Sorrento was very much the resort of the well-to-do of Melbourne, a little like it is today. George Coppin, an entrepreneur, recognised Sorrento’s potential (he’d already enjoyed success in other tourism ventures in the township) and in 1889 established the Sorrento Tramway Co. Mr Coppin, who’s now considered the ‘Father of Sorrento’, was no fool. Two decades earlier he had established the Sorrento Steam Navigation Co, bringing out the

first series of pleasure ships and passengers, to Sorrento’s shores! So now Mr Coppin had every reason to look after the passengers arriving by steam boats. He built and operated a one mile, 12 chain long tramway from the Front Beach of Port Phillip Bay to the Back Beach (Bass Strait). The Front Beach terminus was on a hill, just above Sorrento Pier, which was referred to as Tramway Hill. The tramway line was constructed along a private right-of-way to the corner of Point Nepean and Ocean Beach Roads before proceeding along Ocean Beach Road to the Back Beach terminus. Shelters were constructed for passengers at both terminals to keep the hot Sorrento sun from burning their pale skin, although most of the women usually carried umbrellas to protect themselves. The steam locomotives were built in Philadelphia and shipped to Australia.

14 www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

Six open cars with cross-bench seating, capable of carrying 50 passengers per car, would operate for 12 hours from 9.30 in the morning during Sorrento’s busy season – Derby Day to the Sunday after Easter. Alas, all good things come to an end and in 1903 Mr Coppin sold his interest in the tramway company to a local syndicate headed by Isaac Bensilum. Over the next 17 years the tramway struggled to make a profit, perhaps hindered by the birth of the motor car, and in 1921 the tramway closed. The last tram journey was on the 20 March 1921, the usual end of the tourist season. Sadly, little is left of the Sorrento tram today. However, you can visit the steam tram platform which is just a short stroll up from the roundabout at the Sorrento ferry terminal where you can follow the history of the tramway through historic signage as well as take in some spectacular views.

Sorrento Shopping – Cruise the Strip! If you haven’t ever been to Sorrento or haven’t visited for a while, you’ll be surprised by the variety of shops that have hit the strip – especially if it’s fashion you are interested in. There are over 30 fashion & accessories stores to choose from, including a mix of both original boutiques and chain stores (see pages 30-31 for the directory of all Sorrento Village shops). Polperro Dolphin Swims For most of us, swimming with dolphins is a rare and magical experience, so who better to help you connect with these magnificent creatures than the people who’ve been making the introductions in Port Phillip Bay the longest? The Muir family established Polperro Dolphin Swims in 1986. Named after their classic, lovingly maintained boat, which is 25 years young, Polperro has led the bay in environmentally responsible dolphin interactions. They have been tirelessly active in establishing and improving legislation controlling human interaction with wild marine animals, including dolphins. That’s why passengers can’t swim up to the bay’s bottlenose dolphins, but rather hang on to long ropes trailing from the Polperro’s stern, waiting for these often curious creatures to come to them. The rope, and the crew’s careful training and supervision of passengers, mean that even non-swimmers can enjoy this exciting experience. The Polperro departs from Sorrento pier twice daily from October to April. Passenger numbers are strictly limited so everyone has ample opportunity to get wet, or watch dolphins at play from the deck. Reef and seal swims are often part of Polperro trips as well.

These are also revelatory experiences, even for most locals, as the bay’s rich aquatic life is a surprisingly well-kept secret. All gear, including wetsuits and snorkels, are provided, and the Polperro has change areas below deck. On chilly days her saloon cabin is warmly welcoming, as is the complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate and delicious scones, freshly baked on board Polperro. They’re the cherry on top of an inspiring, memorable experience, which saw Polperro enter the Victorian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame in 2001, after winning the environmental tourism category 3 years running. 24 www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

All you need is a smile to enjoy the fun and adventure of paddling on the ocean standing up - it will be the most fun you’ve had on water for a long time! The Mornington Peninsula is a world class Stand Up Paddle (SUP) destination offering stunning coastal views and marine and outdoor experiences. Because you’re gliding over the top of the water, you’ll see some amazing sights including seals, dolphins, stingrays, banjo sharks, schools of fish as well as offshore reefs and kelp beds. Stand Up Paddling is also a great core body workout and can be done anywhere - just add water! St Andrews Beach residents Lynda and Jeff Lim set up Peninsula Stand Up Paddle (PSUP) to take advantage of the Mornington Peninsula’s many amazing SUP locations. “We’re set up as a mobile operation, so we can move around and find the best location each day,” says PSUP Founder Jeff Lim, a long time Mornington Peninsula Resident. “From Point Leo, to Flinders, Dromana and Quarantine Station at Point Nepean National Park, whatever the wind is doing we can take you for a lesson, a surf lesson or an amazing tour. “Children to senior citizens – literally anyone can do it.”

Enter the Weedy Sea Dragon

The Weedy Sea Dragon is located in southern Port Phillip Bay, which is home to a diverse number of marine plants and animals, the habitats these species are found in are unique, some of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. So what better way to see these marine communities then with the ease of a glass bottom boat tour? Tour sites are dependent on weather conditions in order to insure that visibility under the water is at an all time high, while you are sitting dry. Four large windows are your gateways to the underwater world, knowledgeable local crew members and a marine conservationist will be on board to answer any questions you may have. All tours can be run throughout the day and into the early evening, this is the only tour of its kind within Port Phillip Bay so don’t hesitate to add it into a free weekend or your school curriculum. sorrento village life Summer 2011 - phone 9708 8222 or 5906 5771

The park is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula and has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Bass Strait, the Rip and Port Phillip Bay. The entrance to Port Phillip Bay was the most heavily forted port of the British Empire and was known as the ‘Gibraltar of the South’. Visitors can see an example of this at the very point of the park where Fort Nepean is located. It is where an extensive network of forts, gun emplacements and tunnels are located. Also at the park is the Quarantine Station, established in 1852, it offers a unique opportunity to see an infectious disease processing facility still in place. Here visitors will find many historic buildings used

in quarantine which include hospitals, a disinfecting complex, a morgue, cemetery and much more to explore. Point Nepean has an extensive network of tracks to cycle or walk. One recently opened is the Range Area Walk, it takes visitors through an area of the park where the Officer Cadets, who occupied the site for three decades, trained. Features on this walk include a 400m firing range and Monash Break and Light with sweeping views of the park and Melbourne City. Visitors can also relax and enjoy a picnic at Point

Nepean with the shade of a Moonah tree. They are part of a coastal habitat complete with wildlife including echidnas, bandicoots, wallabies, reptiles. In the surrounding waters visitors might also spot bottlenose Dolphins or Australian Fur Seals.

Hear the history Visitors can now take a virtual trip back in time at Point Nepean by listening to a new series of audio tour guides. The stories span the history of the place from thousands of years ago when it was home to the Boonwurrung people, to the time when it was a Quarantine Station and then an army training base. The audio tours are 32 chapters and almost 70 minutes

of listening time. They can be downloaded for free on to an MP3 player in advance at www.parks.vic.gov.au or hired at the Point Nepean Information Centre for $10.

Bike Hire Hiring a bike and exploring the park is a wonderful way to see the many sights of Point Nepean. There are even bike buggies or tag-alongs which are great for families with small children. Bike hire costs $20.50 for the day which includes the helmet. Point Nepean National Park is located at the end of Point Nepean Road, Portsea. Park entry is free For more information visit www.parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 1963

Live the Life Fiesta and Before We Were Project Sorrento 14-16 October 2011

Sorrento will be alive with three days of festivities encompassing vision, sound and movement from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th October, 2011. On Friday, the launch of The Before We Were project marks a new direction for arts in the southern region of the Mornington Peninsula. Commissioned by the Sorrento Portsea Chamber of Commerce, promerginglivesarts are launching what has been designed as a three year community arts project as part of the Mornington Peninsula Shires Arts Alive Festival 2011. Before We Were is a community arts project that draws on the themes of place. How we engage with places and the memories places hold. It aims to engage the local community in a journey of storytelling about their lives and their history in the seaside town of Sorrento. At sunset on Friday October 14, a new experience will take place for the township of Sorrento; the transformation of a local icon, The Continental Hotel. It will be bathed in an abstracted projection of multiple imagery by projection artist, Nick Azidis (Projectionteknik). Nick will project images and forms onto the facade of the Continental Hotel. Bands Charles Jenkins & the Zhivagos (pictured above) and Go Go Sapien will perform their latest works. Community stories will be recorded by community artists roving through the crowd via photography and the written word. In the forthcoming year these images and words will form part of the 2012 festival. For the first time, Sorrento is hosting the start of the International Cycling Race

36 www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

the Jayco Herald Sun Tour on Saturday starting from 9.30am. Ocean Beach Rd will be abuzz with activity as the street is lined with spectators watching the cyclists leave for the final stage of the race. The Mornington Peninsula will host the Jayco Herald Sun Tour for the next three years (see article page 33 this issue). In combination with the Before We Were project, the Sorrento Live the Life Fiesta will take place over the weekend, with guided historical walking tours at 11am and 2pm each day, ghost tours at 8.30pm Saturday, gallery exhibitions, a classic car display on Sunday from 11am plus live local music and entertainment along Ocean Beach Rd all weekend. People of early Melbourne were nervous about seaborne raiders stealing their gold rush wealth and constructed a massive network of forts on both sides entrance to the bay to repel seaborne raiders. The network of defence was Point Nepean, Queenscliff, Swan Island, Fort Franklin, Pope’s Eye shoal and the South Channel Fort. The network of fortifications protecting the narrow entrance to the Bay is a reminder of Port Phillip Bay’s early history. South Channel Fort is an artificial island which was built during the 1880s to illuminate the channel at night and electronically explode mines under attacking ships coming through the Heads. It is 122 metres long,

38 www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

76 metres wide, and 6.4 metres above sea-level. The fort was built within a protecting ring of bluestone rocks which were laid as a foundation., with 14,000 tonnes of bluestone boulders, concrete and sand. As well as gun emplacements, the island also contains an underground keep and the footprint of a now demolished barracks. During its heyday, from the 1890s to 1916, around 100 officers lived and worked on the island. They included artillery men and engineers who manned the fort. The island is not only rich with cultural and naval history but it also plays a critical role in the protection of the White-faced Storm-Petrel. It is one of only three breeding sites in Victoria and the second largest of the three known colonies. The island is used by a number of other species for breeding, offshore feeding and roosting. Species include the Little Penguin, Black-faced Cormorant and the Australian Fur Seal. Five species of bird that visit the island are under international migratory bird agreements. Surrounding the island are the waters of Port Phillip Bay. The rocks that make up the fort provide a suitable habitat for a range of marine organisms including kelp forests and many invertebrates that attach to the rocks. Colourful sponges and soft corals grow amongst the rocks and jetty structures. The small torpedo bay supports areas of seagrass and many fish can be seen here as well as under the pier. Want to volunteer? If you are interested in lending a hand at South Channel Fort there are opportunities available. Works include maintaining the vegetation and general site maintenance. For further info please call 13 1963. South Channel Fort is in Port Phillip Bay, 6km northeast of Sorrento and 13km north-west of Queenscliff. Visitors can access the island by by boat or through Licenced Tour Operator. Please call 13 1963 or visit www.parks.vic.gov.au to find out more information.

No just good, this place is hot! The Smokehouse has been owned and operated by husband and wife team Elizabeth Blane and David Stringer since 2001. It has been recommended in The Age Good Food Guide every year since 2001. It also makes a regular appearance in Cheap Eats including 2011. Melbourne writer and parent Linda McIver recently blogged. “The Smokehouse, by contrast, is proof that there is a heaven on earth for those of us with complicated diets . . . every member of staff gives the impression that they are thrilled to see you, and dedicated to making you smile. . .” The focus is on fresh food, no preservatives and a great menu that can be enjoyed as takeaway or dine in. The restaurant is fully-licensed

and features a great local wine-list carrying around 50 different wines. The owners have 7 children and have made the early sitting very child-friendly. The kids menu contains real food, no junk. Filtered tap water is placed on each table. Elizabeth explains “We make every effort to cater for special dietary needs whether it be gluten free or dairy free or even fructose free. We work on the basis that anything is possible providing we have the fresh ingredient on site. We make our gluten free bases on site and cook them on baking paper to avoid cross contamination. Just ask and we will do our best to alter an existing dish or do something particular.” It is always wise to book 5984 1246.

A little beauty LOQUAT – the restaurant, opened in December 2003, it is the combined creation of owners Paul Manning and Tracey Henry. Discretely tucked away, just a few steps down off Point Nepean Road in Sorrento, LOQUAT is a seductively lit, contemporary restaurant and bar. This restaurant comes alive in summer with the hustle and bustle of happy holidaymakers in Sorrento. Throughout the rest of the year, it is an intimate space for candlelit and well-executed dinners featuring meticulously made, modern cuisine. Settle for a fabulous meal or dine alfresco when the summer crowd gathers under a loquat tree. Paul and Tracey’s focus is on seasonal and regional produce. “At LOQUAT we strive to use local, seasonal and sustainable products whenever possible.” explained Paul. LOQUAT’s kitchen garden actually provides all the herbs for the restaurant as well as tomatoes, cucumbers, beetroots, eggplant, zucchini and even the odd loquat. Loquat fruits are yellow, egg shaped and about the size of a small apricot. Comparable to apples in many aspects, the succulent, tangy flesh is white or yellow and sweet in flavour. Loquat’s are usually one of the first stone fruits to appear each season - with only a brief seasonal window from the end of October to

November, blink and you could miss them - during this time look out for the LOQUAT margarita and the LOQUAT sorbet.
