Vitality boost for the Village As the newest face of the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce, resident Alison Doherty is looking forward to developing her existing relationships with the local businesses. In her role as the Marketing and Development Coordinator she will focus upon bringing the Village’s small businesses together in order to create projects and marketing campaigns that would not be possible in isolation. This collective approach will see the introduction of new initiatives in addition to the development of popular existing projects such as the Mt Eliza Farmers Market and Christmas Fair. “I hope to bring my experience, creative skills and positive outlook to the role,” says Alison. “I would like to encourage more business owners to contribute ideas, to join in networking and to feel more involved in the greater business community and the projects of the Chamber.” Having spent 11 years working in similar roles with shopping precincts between the city and the Peninsula, Alison’s experience is impressive and boasts work on a multitude of marketing projects and special events alongside many small business

owners over the years. Alison grew up in Northern Ireland and after a four year stint in Durban, South Africa, moved to Australia in 1999 with her family. It was on a random visit to Mt Eliza that she fell in love with the area. “In a quick whistle stop tour I was instantly convinced this was where I wanted to settle, the sense of community was obvious, and the ‘village style’ ambience appealed to me immediately.” Alison’s vision for Mt Eliza is to ensure the Village maintains its vitality and economic viability whilst keeping its special relaxed atmosphere, a feature that makes it unique from any other township. “In terms of new projects, I hope to introduce a food festival and some web based interaction with our customer base. It’s all about stretching a very small budget a long way!”

The Change Cycle is a project designed to train homeless people in technical skills, self-confidence and work-day structure. The aim is to help them break the destructive homeless ‘cycle’. As part of the program, bike shop owners train the homeless in the technical skills needed to restore bikes that may otherwise be thrown away or simply rust away in back-yard sheds. Secondhand bikes are donated by the community, the bikes are restored by the homeless and then gifted to indigenous communities. Receiving the bikes will allow the remote communities to hold various bike based events through the year with the goal of providing better health outcomes for the surrounding indigenous community by fostering cross generational connectedness and a sense of belonging for community members. The project is a philanthropic social experiment of Mt Eliza Travelscene Mt Eliza was started over 30 years ago as Trish Stamp Travel here in the village. Trish Stamp still owns and operates the travel agency and has been in the business for 40 years. The staff have travelled by various means of transport all over the world. couple Stuart Allen, an ethical investor of houses accommodating individuals in a state of homelessness in the Frankston area, and Kelly O’Brien an educational psychologist. Mr Allen, 46, a long-time bike enthusiast has worked with people in a state of homelessness for about 7 years. “We aim to break down myths & misconceptions about individuals in a state of homelessness and empower them with a sense of self-esteem from the satisfaction of helping others,” he said. “This is a project based on the principals of positive psychology: everyone has an opportunity to engage in helping others, contribute to something with a great meaning & purpose and gain great satisfaction out of doing something you love,” says Ms O’Brien. The Change Cycle is proud to announce that thanks to the generous assistance of the local community, they have now reached their first target of restoring 30 bikes. The project is now entering its next phase and the team require assistance to transport these bicycles to The Umoona Tjutagku Health Service (UTHS) in Coober Pedy. The plan is to hire a 3 tonne truck to travel the total distance 3260 km, a journey that requires 3,000 litres of petrol per 1,000 kms. The organisation is seeking assistance in the way of financial support to cover expenses associated with transportation, training and tools. To donate visit The Change Cycle Project’s fundraising page at: indiegogo.com/The-Change-Cycle. The group are also interested in hearing from people who may be able to offer assistance in other ways, such as lending them a truck. Update on plans for John Butler Reserve Residents have for the last couple of months been able to canvas Mornington Shire’s proposed plans for the John Butler Reserve in Mt Eliza. Original plans for the Reserve were actually adopted by Mornington Shire Council in 2008 but had to be redrafted after overwhelming objections by Mt Eliza residents to include a skate park. After much consternation by Council, and abject horror by many of Mt Eliza’s residents at the notion of installing a skate park at the back of the shops in Mt Eliza Way, Mornington Peninsula Shire buckled and relocated the skate park to a far more fitting home in Wooralla Drive. So it was back to the drawing board for the shire’s thinkers and planners and the result

– two plans for the John Butler Reserve, with residents asked to opinion which one they prefer. Both Options (1 & 2) are extremely similar with only minor details changing. Cr Leigh Eustace told Mt Eliza Village Magazine that Option 1 was Council’s favoured choice. That plan would see the demolition of the current toilet block and filthy shelter sheds. A new toilet block would be built opposite John Phillips Lane. Car parking behind the dog leash free area would be scrapped to make way for more parkland and new car spaces created in front of the pre-school on Ranelagh Drive. More car spaces would also be created

Need a Pawdicure? As expected the new home of Mt Eliza Pets is Stunning! Now located in the old Fat Williams shop, it is light and bright and full to the brim with an amazing choice of local and imported Pet products. But the big news is they are now offering Dog Grooming! As always with Cindy the welfare of the dogs is number 1. No cages or sedation are used in this modern salon. Here the doggy is the client, with beautiful open ended cubbies for each. Every dog gets special attention from Cindy’s animal loving staff which between them have 30 years grooming experience!

behind the shops with council proposing to asphalt the area and mark car spots with lines in order to maximise the number of parks. The Shire’s Strategic Projects Officer, Chris Munro, says the number of car spaces would increase from 170 to 189. Option 1 would also see part of the dog park fenced to allow access for pedestrians through the area without the fear of being pounced on by pooches. At least one resident told Cr Eustace “that’s a complete waste of money” as he outlined the plans to Mt Eliza Village magazine recently. “None of the dogs that come here jump on people”, she insisted. Cr Eustace says the plan would allow people to walk along a pathway from Wimbledon Avenue to the back of ‘The

Village’ without having to go through the dog park. Option 2 is similar to Option 1 but would see less parking behind the shops and more car spaces created adjacent to the Scout Hall. Relocating car parks away from the back of the shops would allow for an extension of parkland. A pathway would guide people from the car park to the shops. It would also see vegetation retained in front of the pre-school whereas in Option 1, trees would be removed. Cr Eustace believes Option 2 will probably be received more favourably by Heritage Victoria, who need to sign off on the plans because of the significance of the

Ranelagh Estate. The project is expected to cost $1M and will be carried out in stages over five years. Cr Eustace says whatever option is adopted it will be an improvement on the current “haphazard car park created in 1971”.

Mt Eliza murder a mystery When police arrive at ‘Glenburn’ in Old Mornington Road, Mt Eliza, they find the body of retired Colonel John Norman Duncan lying face down on plastic bags on the patio. His execution style slaying shocked the sleepy well-heeled village of Mt Eliza in 1966 and 46 years later it still ranks as one of the worst crimes the close-knit beachside community has endured. Colonel Duncan, whose secluded property was nestled in a gully near Olivers Hill, was shot three times in the back of the head with a gun muffled by a pillow. It’s been ten years since the Homicide Squad’s Cold Case unit re-opened the investigation in Colonel Duncan’s gruesome

murder, but they’re still no closer to bringing his killers to justice. A wealthy property developer, Colonel Duncan was divorced and lived alone but he was reportedly known around Mt Eliza as a ladies man. His murder on September 5th, 1966 scandalised Melbourne society and made front page news. Detectives, who were assigned to the case at the time, believe his death was the result of a business deal gone wrong or that he had tangoed with somebody’s wife and raised the ire of a jealous husband. Jane Carroll, now in her 70’s, remembers Colonel Duncan well. He was a friend of

www.mtelizavillage.com.au

Jane’s parents, Phyllis and Dick Unsworth, of Mt Eliza. “He was always at our home, he’d drop in, he was like part of the furniture”, Jane recalls. “Mum actually did some book work for him. He was a bit of wheeler and dealer”, she says. “I remember him being at my engagement party (in April of 1966) because he gave me an iron”. While Jane says there was plenty of speculation as to why he was killed, she believes her mother’s theory is probably closest to the truth. “Mum certainly thought his death was the result of a business deal.” Jane says Colonel Duncan lent money to people and expected it to be repaid on the agreed date. “I think mum believed John had lent money to someone and the debt hadn’t been repaid and relations soured from there”, she says. Colonel Duncan’s brother, Colin, says his brother was a man of principles. “He regarded a contract as a contract and was firm about this”, Mr Duncan was quoted as saying in a Melbourne newspaper in 2002. A witness told police she saw Colonel Duncan’s Jaguar being driven through Frankston on the

afternoon of his death. Two young men were reportedly in the vehicle with him and the Jaguar’s headlights were on and his left hand indicator was blinking continuously. Police say this suggests the men may have been threatening Colonel Duncan and that he was desperately trying to signal that he was in danger. Jane says detectives spoke to her late mother at her Langwarrin home in 2002 when the case was re-opened. “Mum had slight dementia then, so I don’t think she was able to tell them much”. Jane’s father had earlier passed away in 1968. Detective Sergeant, Gordon Hynd, who was assigned to the case in 2002 under the now disbanded Cold Case Unit, says a former Mt Eliza man was arrested as a person of interest in 2002, “but there was insufficient evidence to charge anyone”. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t make the connection between him and Colonel Duncan”, Det Sgt Hynd said. “It was a difficult case to reconstruct because of the passage of time”, he added. “It’s just weird that they were never able to solve it”, Jane Carroll says. by MEL MARCELLO

Over 20 years of Success for Long-Running Educator For Carrum resident and long-serving Kumon Instructor Robyn Wheatley, the past twenty years working in the education sector having been nothing short of rewarding. However, after instructing countless students through the individualised Kumon maths and English programmes, Robyn says it is now time to move on from running the Kumon Mt Eliza Education Centre and is welcoming a likeminded person to fill her shoes. The mother of three who began running the Kumon Mt Eliza centre in 1989 says while much has changed within the area, the community’s dedication to developing students’ love of learning remains is strong as ever. “Parents from this community are interested in education, in their children

and also in many other activities – they like to be involved. “There’s so much potential for the Kumon Mt Eliza centre to grow. I just can’t be there as often as I would like. There are a lot of younger students coming to Kumon now, starting earlier and in need of support,” she says. For those considering a rewarding career as an Instructor, Robyn says: “It’s important to care about children and education and also have an eye for detail. Someone who gets excited about developing independent learners and developing potential within the community would really thrive in this position.” For more information about how to

spent travelling with him in India influenced his (Swamiji’s) future direction. Returning to the United States, Swamiji founded his own ashrams in New York and Los Angeles before arriving in Australia in 1991. Together with co-director, Devi Ma, a Canadian, the Mt Eliza Ashram was established in 1996. Swamiji had been running an ashram in Beach Road Elwood but was forced to look for another location when the owner of the property wanted to redevelop his land. The majority of visitors to the Mt Eliza Ashram are trying to find a way to destress or unwind. Meditation and getting in touch with their inner being helps in soothing their frazzled nerves. A teacher of meditation for 35 years, Swamiji believes that “within every person is a tremendous potential that in most cases is largely untapped.” He calls that the ‘Inner Self’, which Swamiji says can be awakened through meditation. “More and more people are becoming interested in this possibility.” “It seems evolutionary”, says Swamiji. He says when he started teaching meditation only “adventurous types, www.mtelizavillage.com.au

bohemians or artists” would come along. “Now everyone comes”. Swamiji says “medical research shows that meditation is good for the brain and stress reduction.” “Doctors often refer people to the ashram, and we have a whole bunch of doctors who come here and meditate themselves.” “You connect with a deep place and you draw nourishment from that place. It’s just like sleep, but it’s better than sleep”. Swamiji says “modern life is fast and difficult, people are their own worst enemy but we can also be our own best friend”. He says meditation teaches people “to access the deepest and authentic part” of ourselves and by doing so can lead to “love peace and harmony”. The co-ordinator of the Shiva School of Meditation & Yoga, Vani Hudson, says yoga is a big drawcard for the ashram. Vani, who has been working at Shiva Mt Eliza for 15 years, credits a celebrity profile around yoga for its growing popularity. Actor, Garry McDonald, who battled anxiety and panic attacks in the 90’s, says he started to “experience a contentment that I never thought I would find” when

he started taking yoga under Swamiji’s guidance. Vani says amongst the Mt Eliza community yoga is very popular, evidenced by a large newly built yoga hall at the ashram, which was entirely funded by donations from the regulars. She also believes having resident yoga teachers is part of the ashram’s appeal. While meditation focuses on the mind and emotions, Vani says yoga is aimed at relaxing the entire body with the added benefit of physical toning. She says others come to the ashram because they’re looking for more in their lives. “They want a deeper connection.” Vani confesses she was one of those wanting to live life to its full potential when she first visited the ashram, which was at that stage located in Elwood. The quiet sanctuary of the ashram was also where she met her husband and the couple now reside next door to the Tower Road retreat. Others have taken up residence in the ashram itself. About 35 people currently live at the property on a regular basis after finding what they were looking for. 33-year-old Durgananda

is one of them. Now a yoga teacher at Shiva Mt Eliza, Durgananda has lived at the ashram since she was 19. “I was at uni in Melbourne struggling with what I wanted to do. I didn’t know what I wanted and where I was going. I had teenage angst and depression and all that stuff,” Durgananda says as she relaxes by the ashram’s large duck pond. “I was looking for meaning and purpose. I think I was mad at the world”, she says with a smile. Durgananda admits she was dubious and suspicious (of the ashram) at first, “but I actually felt better, it uplifted me” she says of attending some of the programs on offer. After making a decision to live at the ashram for a year, Durgananda never left. “I got hooked in the yoga department and I stayed on here to become a teacher”, she says. Durgananda now heads up that same department and runs classes five days a week at the ashram. She confesses to having found a purpose and meaning. “I found that ‘thing’ I was looking for”, she reflects. BY MELINDA OGDEN

Do You Have Business Interruption Insurance?

Business Interruption insurance, also known as “loss of profits insurance”, provides coverage for the loss of income and profit your business may suffer following a claim such as a fire or storm damage. This insurance will allow you to continue earning an income and profit while you rebuild your business, enabling you to continue paying any fixed costs you may have following a loss, such as vehicle leases, business loans, wages, etc, whilst unable to trade or operate, and still continue to earn the profit you would have made prior to the loss. Research suggests that businesses without business interruption insurance do not survive after a major claim or loss and cease trading. In many instances, personal assets such as homes could be at risk as well because loans are unable to be repaid and guarantees are in place. If you would like to know more about business interruption or any other form of general insurance such as property, liability, burglary, professional indemnity, etc, please call Midland Insurance Brokers on 9775 2355, email at mornpen@midlandinsurance.com.au or visit their website www.midlandinsurance.com.au.

Headaches affect about two-thirds of all adults at some point in their lives The reasons for an onset can be varied, with symptoms including stiffness or difficulty in turning your neck, visual problems such as trouble focusing, dizziness, or nausea. According to Pippa Hanson, Managing Director of The Sports Injury Clinic, early intervention and a specific treatment plan

can limit the duration and discomfort of headaches. “Most cases of headaches are resolved within a week of treatment and management,” says Pippa. “Our practitioners will help you identify triggers or causes for your headaches and aim to change the reason for them occurring.” Some simple suggestions for managing your headache include: Resting from aggravating activity whilst in the acute phase (no prolonged postures with head forward or turning); Taping from your physiotherapist to improve your spine’s posture in the early stage. Learn correct posture of how to unload your neck if it is causing your headache. Placing a lumbar roll behind your back while sitting (lengthways or

across your spine to assist in straightening your neck); Gentle exercises to strengthen your neck and improve your neck’s posture and unload tissues that may be causing your headache; Your treating practitioner may recommend Massage Therapy to assist in the management of your headache pain; Your practitioner may refer you to a Sports Physician for further investigations if your headache pain does not respond in the suggested time frames. The Village Clinic was originally situated on Mt Eliza’s Old Mornington Road, and has been at its current location on the corner of Mt Eliza Way and Betty Avenue for over 40 years. In addition to the General Practitioners, a GP allergist, a clinical psychologist and a physiotherapist also work at the clinic, ably supported by caring nurses and excellent receptionists The clinic provides a full range of general practice services to young and old and those in between. Some patients have been attending this clinic since it first opened it doors, and now their children and grand children all attend as well. Services offered include newborn health checks, immunisations, travel medicine including vaccinations for overseas travel, skin checks including excision of skin cancers and minor surgery, and women’s and men’s health checks. All the doctors enjoy consultations with children and one of them has specialist pediatric qualifications from UK, while another has a diploma in eye disease from UK. The Village Clinic provides a friendly caring environment while delivering medical care of a high standard. This was recognised when AGPAL (Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited) awarded the clinic the ‘Practice of the Year’ award for Victoria, covering the three year period from 2008-2010. All of the doctors hold a Fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) as a minimum postgraduate qualification or are training towards attaining this award. The Village Clinic is also a teaching practice. Currently there are two GP Registrars working at the clinic (a GP Registrar is a qualified doctor who is training to be a specialist General Practitioner). Fourth year medical students and trainee nurses from Monash University have a semester of training here. The Principals and the nurses involved in teaching feel this is a great way of imparting as well as gaining knowledge. Some of the doctors at the Village Clinic are also actively involved with RACGP fellowship examination. The philosophy of those who work at the Village Clinic is encompassed in their mission statement that is proudly displayed in the waiting room. It is recommend reading for all who attend this excellent general practice. The Village Clinic is situated at 129 Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza. For an appointment call the friendly staff on ph: 9787 4999. Country Club oozes history The Mount Eliza Country Club was once the exclusive domain of Mt Eliza’s moneyed men. The Club is situated in a spacious 50 square home on Old Mornington Road and has largely gone unnoticed since its establishment in 1956. Four years ago a board bearing the Club’s name was erected and passersby have become more familiar with the location of the famous club, usually spoken of in revered terms. Mount Eliza Country Club was established by a group of local businessmen, which included Sir Edgar Coles and Sir Reginald Ansett as its founding members. Since 1952, Sir Reg and Sir Ed, together with other local luminaries, had been meeting in the garage further up the road at Hendra, the home of Sir Edgar Coles. The story goes that Lady Coles became tired of cleaning up the empty bottles and

38

Issue 25 • February, March, April 2012

threw them (the men) out of the garage. While some meetings were held at the Manyung Hotel (now the Melbourne Business School on Kunyung Road) it was decided, given the hotel didn’t have a liquor licence, that it would be socially responsible to find a property in which to relocate their social activities and so the MECC was born. The men sold their debentures to buy the property from the Allfry family and had no problem securing a liquor licence given the Club’s well connected patrons, which included judges, lawyers and high ranking police. The Club even has its own Charter of Constitution which states that the MECC was established “to promote the social intercourse of gentlemen interested in literature, science, art, sport, travel and cultural or similar activities. While some long time residents say the club was a swill hole in its heyday, current www.mtelizavillage.com.au

day barmaid, Sarah, maintains the patrons never get rowdy or out of control. “Definitely not, it’s normally pretty quiet”, she says. Current day President, Paul Abel, says the Charter “hasn’t changed very much at all”. However, the Club’s membership has. Once the drinking hole for elite white collared businessmen, the Club’s membership now encompasses tradesmen. Paul, who’s been a member since 1997, says opening the membership to blue collar workers “has been addressed over time”. “Just because someone’s a plumber, a chippy or a sparkie, he’s still a

businessman”, Paul points out. While the Club has had to make changes to encourage membership, it remains a Men’s Club of which membership is reserved for men. Paul concedes that’s unlikely to change anytime soon. “I don’t think that attitude is ready to change just yet”, he says. However, the Club doesn’t exclude women visitors, provided they’re signed in by a member. In fact, Paul says Friday nights at the MECC have become popular with members bringing their wives or girlfriends along. While the Club presently boasts 160 members, Paul would like to see membership increase so the MECC can finance some long overdue renovations.

Day trips with Maree’s Tours High Tea at The Windsor Hotel has become a ‘must do’ – not only for Melbournians but for country, interstate and international visitors as well. It is a truly cultural experience, combining beautifully prepared food with history. Built in 1893, The Windsor predates many of the grand hotels of the Victorian era, including The Savoy, London (1889), The Plaza, New York, (1894), The Waldorf Astoria, New York (1894), the Hotel Ritz, Paris (1898) and The Raffles, Singapore (1887). Now Mornington Peninsula residents can sit back in a luxury coach (with rest rooms) and visit not only The Windsor for High Tea, but choose from a variety of day trips with Maree’s Tours. For instance take in the live musical, Annie; enjoy a twilight cruise sailing from North Wharf; wander through the spectacular Melbourne Flower Show, and for train buffs, experience a beautiful return train ride from Castlemaine to Maldon. Most day tours include morning tea and lunch, while theatre tours include a two course meal – a hassle free way to focus your energy on ‘seizing the day,’ not looking for a parking space or a place to eat. Maree also offers interstate tours and a once in a lifetime trip to China in October, which includes the sights of Shanghai, Yangtze River Cruise, Terra Cotta Warriors, Beijing and Hong Kong. Itineraries are available by request. If there is another destination that takes your fancy, Maree will gladly put a package together for you – a minimum of 30 people are required before a trip can go ahead. Maree’s Tours can be contacted on 9759 0066, or visit the website www.mareestours.com for further information. Jennifer Webber www.mtelizavillage.com.au

Huge makeover and new name for Linton’s Linton’s Garden and Home Nursery in Mt Eliza is one of the most established and recognisable garden centres in Australia. As far as the Mornington Peninsula is concerned, it has the largest garden centre. Since it was established in 1937, Linton’s has been a multiple award winner of the prestigious Australian Garden Centre of the Year award, making it one of the Victorian Nursery Industry’s most popular retailers. For those travelling along the Nepean Highway, the elegant building, constructed from Mt Gambier limestone with a high vaulted glass ceiling (a reproduction of the famous conservatory at Kew Royal Botanical Gardens in England) is hard to miss. Linton’s has been more than just a nursery to the local community, but a focal point for people to meet and have a coffee or lunch. Historically, Linton’s Cafe’ is one of the first buildings in Mt. Eliza. The charming cafe’, at the back of the nursery, is situated in the original 1871 farmhouse that occupied the site. It’s a hub for those on both sunny and cold days with its open fireplace a drawcard. However, Linton’s is to be no more.

The new owners, who acquired the business from Michael Linton in the latter part of 2008, are rebranding the store which will become known as Eden Gardens. The garden centre is also undergoing a significant makeover. “The refurbishment is underway and is progressing well”, says the Managing Director of Eden Gardens, Simon Ainsworth. “We are installing new gardens with a specific focus that encompass areas of gardening that can sometimes be left by other retailers”, he said. Included in the new design is an innovative children’s garden, herb garden and an Australian garden. Mr Ainsworth says an amphitheatre to stage community events will also be established at the back of the nursery.

Eden Gardens Mt Eliza will be design driven and inspirational, serving customer’s needs for loveable and liveable landscapes”, he said. Linton’s is the second acquisition made by the Eden Gardens flagship store in North Ryde, which is set on 2.5 hectares, about 20 minutes from Sydney’s CBD. The group also acquired Carseldine Garden World in Brisbane in 2008 which has also been rebranded and is “doing very well”. Mr Ainsworth says Eden Gardens will continue to work closely with local charities, including the Cancer Council of Victoria and in youth services with White Lion. The refurbishment and rebranding is expected to be completed by April. by MEL MARCELLO
