Welcome to the Autumn/Winter edition of Sorrento Village Life. In the cooler months you can enjoy many winter warming indulgences. The historic seaside village of Sorrento houses a bevy of delights for shoppers, diners or browsers. Perfect for long winter walks browsing and relaxing. Get away from the hustle and bustle to relax and indulge for a day, a week or a weekend. Sorrento’s main shopping strip has over 80 retail stores with loads of fashion to put you ahead of the Melbourne race, offering boutique and unique stores as well as a number of chain stores. There are also a host of galleries and homewares stores to meander through, as well as wide array of eateries to grab a coffee, a meal or a glass of Mornington Peninsula wine. Most accommodation in and around Sorrento is within walking distance so it’s easy to stay a night or two and take your time strolling through the street. If it’s not just shopping you’re after, you could spend a few hours at one of the numerous day spas or wellness centres in Sorrento, to take in a massage, facial or any number of beauty treatments to help you revive and refresh yourself ready for the winter weather. From 3 - 10 June this year, Taste of Sorrento brings a number of mouth watering food & wine events to town in a week long treat for the senses. Events include themed dinners, cooking demonstrations and tastings, masterclasses, meet the winemaker evening, degustations, chocolate, ice cream, cocktail making and much more. Visit www.tasteofsorrento.com.au for a full program. If active pursuits are more your style, there are numerous walks stretching along coastlines, through national parks or even taking in the historic villages in Sorrento and Portsea, including Point Nepean National Park which is now free to the public and hosts a number of school holiday activities for the kids. Sorrento was Victoria’s first settlement, even if just for a short time, and is home to one of Australia’s tallest

limestone buildings in the Continental Hotel, so the village is enjoyable just to take in the history. You’ll also find fishing charters, dolphin tours and sailing, as well as music at the local hotels and of course the historic Athenaeum Cinema ,which holds both art house and latest release films. Sorrento really does allow you to “live the life”, even if it is for just for a day, so be sure to put a visit in your calendar this winter, especially to indulge in one of the many Taste of Sorrento events from 3 – 10 June. POINT NEPEAN NATIONAL PARK Point Nepean National Park is located on the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula, nudging into Bass Strait with commanding views over Port Phillip Bay, and is home to many endangered species of flora and fauna. Over the years, including the last 40,000 years of Aboriginal occupation, the area known as Point Nepean has become enriched with environmental and cultural history but for more than 150 years, the public has had little or no access. The Quarantine Station was established in 1852 to protect the colony of Melbourne from ship borne diseases. 100 years later the Department of the Army took over some of the buildings to establish a training college for officer cadets, while the Department of Health continued to maintain some buildings for use should the need for quarantine arise.

In 1998 the Army left the area and there was a public outcry when the Federal Government announced in 2002 that parts of it would be sold because the site was no longer required by the Department of Defence. Local and more widespread protests saw this decision reversed, and the Point Nepean Community Trust (PNCT) was established with funding of $27m to plan and manage the development of this beautiful and

historic part of Victoria for the future. A visit to Point Nepean can be as brief as one hour or can take all day, depending on what you want to see and do. The scenery itself is breathtaking and combined with Fort Nepean, a series of military fortifications dating back to the 1880s, and many historical buildings like the Medical Superintendent’s house, which has been beautifully restored by the PNCT, there is plenty to keep visitors interested. Point Nepean is open every day except Christmas Day and days of high bushfire danger. The Information Centre is open from 10am to 5pm, with vehicle access from 8am to 5pm. The Quarantine Station is only accessible by walking, cycling or transporter. It is 1.5 kilometres from the Information Centre or 1.5 kilometres from the Gunners Cottage car park. The transporter is a hop-on hop-off open air tractortrain service which runs from the Information Centre to Fort Nepean with five stops along the way with the journey taking 30 minutes each way. Enquiries about tours should be made to the Point Nepean National Park Visitors’ Centre on (03)5984 1586 and 45 minute tours run daily in the Easter holidays at 11:45am from the Quarantine Station Transporter Stop. Suitable for all ages and bookings are not required. For further information please visit www.parkweb.vic.gov.au.

Improvements to the streetscape THE Sorrento Portsea Chamber of Commerce is pleased to acknowledge the recent Sorrento streetscape improvements undertaken by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. “The Chamber, Council, Nepean Ratepayers Association, Nepean Conservation Group, Nepean Historical Society and councillor Tim Rodgers have been working together to plan and implement a number of improvements throughout Sorrento’s main shopping district said Business Development Manager Natalie Garner. Works undertaken include footpath

improvements, with the installation of solid surfaces over what was previously dust and patchy grass. New shrubs, trees and tree-guards have been added and dead growth removed. Green wheelie bins have been replaced with marine-grade stainless steel. Street chattels have been upgraded and replaced, bollards and furniture painted in a fresh heritage blue. Footpaths have been cleaned and sealed. Coming improvements include new street lights, additional bins and furniture, more plantings, renewed garden beds and removal of excess concrete planter boxes.

Hard surfaces will be cleaned of chewing gum and stains and then sealed to protect against future disintegration while new solid footpath surfaces will replace muddy sections. The Chamber, Council and coalition group are also planning to install signs that will illustrate historic Sorrento buildings and landscapes. New entranceway signs and flagpoles are also being investigated.

Ghost tours in Sorrento Sorrento Ghost Tours invite you to ‘meet’ the spirits of the Honorable George Coppin, the lady in white, and other mysterious souls during regular tours of Sorrento’s spookiest spots. Entrepreneur, philanthropist and parliamentarian, George Coppin was a legend in his own lifetime. He built the Continental Hotel in 1875 and established the town as a popular seaside resort. Some people, at least those who believe in ghosts, say that he has never really left. According to long-time peninsula resident Jenny Tomkins of Sorrento Ghost Tours, some locals say that Coppin’s ghost still resides in the imposing hotel. When Jenny decided to combine her love of history, teaching and walking by starting Sorrento Ghost Tours, she spent six months researching the topic by speaking with local residents, shop owners, psychics and the Historical Society. She also bought an EMF (electromagnetic field) meter, a device used by paranormal enthusiasts to detect the presence of ghosts.

8

At the Koonya Hotel, legend says that a man died when he fell from a staircase, which has been longremoved. Jenny was also told of ‘cold spots’ in the corridors where the temperature might be 10 degrees lower than the surrounding air – an indicator of the presence of ghosts. On a Sorrento Ghost Tour, participants visit a dozen historic sites, at least eight of which are believed to have ghostly occupants. One is the Three Palms Restaurant, which was once a family home from

where a young girl was abducted and never found. Another tour highlight is the Athenaeum theatre, built by Coppin c1870. The cinema is said to be watched over by a lady in white. A number of people have said that they have seen her. Sorrento Ghost Tours run on the first Saturday of each month and more often during the holiday season, regardless of weather. The 90 minute excursion departs from the foreshore rotunda at 8pm. Cost: $25 adult, $20 concession, $15 child U15, $65 family of 2 adults and up to 3 children. No children under the age of 10. Children under 16 must be with an adult. Phone 0409 844 768 or email sorrentoghosttours@gmail.com Pictured: Jenny Tomkins left. No other item so strongly reflects, or should we say ‘telegraphs’ your personality quite as well as your carry-all. Big, small, glossy, matt, leather, lace or lycra, Sterling & Hyde are the peninsula’s specialists at matching the bag to the bod. Handbag designer Amy Richards’ forte is ‘functional with flair and added fun’. Just check-out the cornucopia of choices on the store’s new website sterlingandhyde.com.au Amy’s award winning creations are often ideal right off-the-rack but can also easily be customised to suit. “Nothing is too much trouble, we live and breathe handbags” said Amy with a chuckle. Every handbag is designed with the modern woman in mind. Each style is named after an influential woman in Amy’s life; paying homage to grandmothers, sisters, cousins, dear friends and dedicated clients. An avid fashionista, Amy long felt that the personal touch was lacking in the boutiques she used to visit. The salespeople were either intimidating or just not really interested. Sterling & Hyde knows that it is essential to cater to what a woman truly wants. “If someone just loves our soft, black, Italian leather clutch or shoulder bag but wants it in red, Sterling & Hyde will create it for you.” The Sorrento store also stocks a dazzling array of jewellery from regional and international designers. New collections include Rye resident Julie Walker’s Sweet Florence, Bec Stern’s dainty gold and silver adornments, along with celebrity brands such as Nicole Ritchie’s House of Harlow and Kim Kardashian’s new line Belle Noel. “Sterling & Hyde is women working tirelessly to give working women what they want - and that is priceless!” Amy added. Limestone reigns in Sorrento

Sorrento has many fine examples of early limestone buildings with the versatile stone playing a significant role in the development of the historcal seaside resort. The three hotels in the township – Continental, Koonya and Sorrento - are built from the beautiful limestone.

12 www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

Overlooking the bay, Hotel Sorrento, built in 1872, is classified by the National Trust. Made famous by the movie bearing its name, it is a favoured hotel amongst visitors and locals alike. The Continental Hotel, in the main street, is also classified and was for many years the place to stay for the well to do. In 1904, an annexe was built opposite on Constitution Hill and used as a ballroom. The Continental Hotel is believed to be the only four storey limestone building in Australia. Koonya Hotel, which has great sentimental value to the community, was a thorn in the side of the other two hotels owners who opposed its construction. Kooyna is an aboriginal word for seagull and the property was owned and operated by the well known Clark family until 1952. St John’s Anglican Church, built as the earliest church on the Mornington Peninsula, is once again heritage listed. A beautifully proportioned neo-Gothic building, construction of which commenced in 1873 on land donated by the headmaster of Geelong Grammar. It was added to in 1889 and later 1908-11 and houses the unique stained glass Prince Consort window.

The Organic Gardener Making use of some of our garden space to grow our own food is becoming more and more popular, and it’s no surprise really. In a current climate of rising fruit and vegetable costs and concerns over conventional agricultural practices there is an increased awareness of the benefits of growing some of your food at home. And the benefits are many, not the least to be able to harvest fresh, clean fruit, vegetables and herbs straight from the garden. However it is important for many people to know that incorporating an edible garden into their landscape will not affect the structure and aesthetic of their property. Just as the awareness of increasing local native plantings has risen in recent years, so too has the understanding that through thoughtful design you can grow much of your food at home while maintaining, and generally enhancing the attractive qualities of your landscape. Fruit trees, perennial vegetables and herbs can all be used as feature plants in your gardens while providing you with large quantities of delicious produce. And with a number of raised beds dedicated to annual vegetables you can provide your family (and friends) with an abundance of fresh fruit and veggies all year round. We have fantastic growing conditions here on the tip of the Peninsula, and with a little know how you can grow most of the produce you would normally purchase from the grocer. But much tastier! A garden of cutting hedge art The Enchanted Maze has undergone a transformation of late. The park has expanded and now offers Australia’s first Tube Slides: two giant twisting slides that use rubber tubes on dry slopes. There’s a new 3D Maze with street style spray paint art and an exciting team of garden artists who have reworked the landscape using sculpture, design & topiary. Unlike traditional methods, where hedging plants are trained using metal frames, the topiary at The Enchanted Maze is achieved using free form relief carving. The results are striking with many original works on display.

A pod of topiary dolphins leap around the ornamental lake, a friendly face smiles quietly within the cypress of the Children’s Maze. And along the gardens front hedge, is a 75m mural of ‘enchanted’ carved images. With a magical display of foliage and form, this gardening team seem to have perfected the art of cutting hedge. Visit during the April school holidays and you can also enjoy the Easter Egg-Stravaganza: a 3-day egg hunt in the gardens of the maze. >Egg-Stravaganza, from 19-21st April. www.enchantedmaze.com.au

Beast Creations Art Glass Gallery owned and operated by glass blower Roberta Easton who celebrates being a master craftsperson this year with 20 years experience under her belt. The gallery is a space that just has to be seen to be believed. It’s a great time of year in Sorrento with ample parking and a more personal experience in the gallery with the crowds of summer gone. With new pieces arriving at the gallery every week, it’s always a feast for the eyes. Roberta’s latest pieces of hand blown glass have been inspired by her love and appreciation of tribal art. Thousands of years of culture, heritage, stories and dreaming passed down from one generation to the next. “Marks that at first seem primitive and simplistic, on further inspection are masterfully applied in their simplicity. There is perfection in each brush stroke. The colour palettes chosen reflect the drama and beauty of the ever changing landscapes of our dramatic, beautiful country.” Uncannily Su Lesley Fishpool, whose wonderful paintings are on permanent display at the gallery, unwittingly launched into her own tribal inspired paintings. Once again the two artist’s paintings and glass uniting in perfect, visual harmony. Last year our talented in house jeweller Lauren Harris was accepted as a member of the Australian Gold and Silversmith guild. After seven years as a key staff member at the gallery, made the massive lifestyle change and moved to Tassie.

We were very sad to see her go. The creative juices are flowing again after the big move with her latest amazing pieces of jewellery arriving at the gallery regularly now. Another new facet to Beast Creations has evolved from our passion for our pets!! Our gallery is dog friendly with Roberta’s old dog Tess usually asleep somewhere in the gallery. With the greatest respect and sensitivity Roberta is now working with clients who regretfully have lost their beloved pets. Roberta will custom make a beautiful glass paperweight to commemorate the lost loved one. Each one is designed around the individual animal. We are animal lovers and very sensitive to people’s emotions. Hopefully we can turn something sad into something beautiful that brings a smile every time it’s looked at, to commemorate our lost, loved pet. Award winning Medispa now also in Sorrento It won’t come as a surprise to many but the Mornington Peninsula is fast becoming the spa capital of the Asia/ Pacific region. Forget Hepburn Springs, the Mornington Peninsula has been recognised as having two industry leading spas. Peninsula Life Medispa in Mornington & now also in Sorrento has been awarded Best Day Spa (Rural) by the Australasian Spa Association while Peninsula Hot Springs in Fingal has been recognised as Best Natural Bathing Spa. The team at Peninsula Life Medispa are thrilled with their win. The spa started business three and a half years ago in Tanti Avenue, Mornington, and is owned by a consortium of four, including two doctors. Co-owner, and Mornington Peninsula Spa Association President, Alana Grant, says when Peninsula Life Medispa first opened three years ago it had a staff of three, now there are 15 local girls employed. Alana says a gap in the market for a prestige day spa was what convinced her to open Peninsula Life Medispa. She wanted a medispa, so approached two people

20 www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

she knew had a medical background and realised her dream to fill the gap. Alana says Mornington’s Peninsula Life Medispa “is the only one on the whole of the Peninsula which has a medispa.” Now open in Sorrento, Alana and the team are excited to be offering the same treatments and services there. Experienced remedial massage therapists and trained laser specialists qualified in the most advanced laser & IPL techniques for hair removal, pigment spot removal, skin rejuvenation and treatment of veins on the face and body. Sorrento has always been a favourite holiday destination for many. Its natural attractions, seaside charm, casual sophistication and historic flavour provide the drawcard for visitors and holidaymakers alike. Transportation has played a large role in the opening up of the Mornington Peninsula. In the 1800’s, those visiting would travel firstly to Mornington by road in coaches or by paddle steamers, then considered to be luxurious transport in those days. Coach travel was necessary, but extremely uncomfortable, leaving passengers with motion sickness, bruises and other injuries sustained as wooden wheels jarred their way across bumpy roads. In winter, weather often made the tracks and roads impassable for the coaches. Inclement weather often meant an overnight stay in Frankston For 70 years, from the 1850s to the early 1900, coaches were a principle means of transport.

A coach service established by Cobb & Co ran from the Royal Hotel on the Esplanade in Mornington to the Albion Hotel in Bourke Street, Melbourne and return. The team of horses were changed in Frankston and Mordialloc. Passengers, luggage, mail, parcels and various produce were all part of the coach load. The favourite seat was up with the driver, who was the carrier of interesting news and gossip. The coaches popularity declined when the railway to Mornington opened in 1889. During the summer season in the early 1880’s the Port Philip Steamship and Hotel Company owned the “Golden Crown” and “Lonsdale” paddle steamers.

30 www.VirtualSorrento.com.au/sorrento

They ran daily excursions from Melbourne to Mornington, Dromana, Sorrento and Queenscliff. There was usually much excitement in Mornington with the arrival of the paddle steamers bringing visitors. While some debarked at the Mornington wharf, the paddle steamers continued on to Dromana, Sorrento and Queenscliff. The passengers were greeted at their respective destinations by the staff of local hotels and guest houses where they would be holidaying. Sadly, the seemingly romantic era of luxurious paddle steamers and coaches is now long gone, but what hasn’t changed is that visitors continue to flock to the Mornington Peninsula and Sorrento in increasing numbers. A special thankyou to Di Hamilton for finding these old postcards.

Hearty Winter warmers and sweet delights A foundation inductee into the ‘vanilla slice hall of fame’, Just Fine Food in Sorrento has built a reputation with foodies, far and wide, as one of the peninsula’s best eateries. The period building beckons with a huge array of freshdaily taste treats, making Just Fine Food a favourite destination for breakfast, lunch and brunch – either inside, under the broad veranda or in a sunny alfresco spot, with table-service throughout. House-made specialties include soups, lasagne, chicken and leek pies, ricotta, prosciutto and olive tarts and goat’s cheese flans. Gluten free and gourmet vegetarian dishes are always available on the extensive menu. Pretty well everything is available in take-home packs, including house-made tomato relish, salad dressings and rare roast beef. Jams, honey, olive oil and hand-made chocolates are all sourced from regional suppliers. As seasonal chills drift in, Just Fine Food’s winter menu finds favour with slow-cooked, hearty winter warmers. A big bowl of soup with toasted olive bread is a lunchtime favourite. Smoked salmon ravioli is seasoned with thyme and a dash of burnt butter. Risotto is laced with peas, prosciutto, goat’s cheese and fresh lemon. Sausages are partnered with caramelised onions

sautéed in beer and the Nan’s shepherd’s pie is as good as it gets. The breakfast menu includes French toast with macerated fruit, fresh figs and mascarpone. There is also a delicious Asian style omelette fortified with tasty tomatoes and chilli soy sauce. As per the ‘gourmand religion’, everything is prepared fresh-to-order and fresh double cream, free range eggs and epicure-grade ingredients are a given. Just Fine Food’s desserts are to die for and go well beyond the epic vanilla slices. Cakes include a passionfruit sponge, chocolate croissants, pear and almond, chocolate ripple, flourless orange and lumberjack. Bread and butter pudding, apple and cinnamon gallettes, sticky date pudding, fig and mascarpone tarts, lemon curd and berry-almond tartlets all number among the many sweet treats. Winter offers a great opportunity to get into a pudding or two followed by a coffee and brisk walk along Ocean Beach Road browsing the array of stores. A special children’s menu includes spaghetti bolognaise, toasted gingerbread-man sandwiches and cute cupcakes. Stringer’s to host food events FOODIE’S guru Peter Watson will present a cooking demonstration and lunch on June 6 in Sorrento as part of ‘Taste of Sorrento’ week which runs as a prelude to Mornington Peninsula’s Winter Wine Weekend. Going back three or four millennia, since before The Queen of Sheba delivered her gifts of gold, precious gems and exotic spices to King Solomon, the value of spices has been up there with the big-ticket items. A former chef, for the past decade Peter Watson has dedicated his working life to developing an expertise with spices; grinding, combining and packaging manya-mix at his Fitzroy cottage-front store. As has been the way for thousands of years, taste devotees travel for leagues to share his spicy secrets. Peter is passionate about his products and says “Most of us are time-poor but we still want to eat well.” He will show us how to use his spices, rubs and marinades to whip up a luscious lunch, quickly.

The event was a collaboration of many community and sporting groups. Proceeds will help rebuild the Rex Theatre in Charlton, Victoria which was decimated by the recent floods.

Longest Lunch The Annual Sorrento Longest Lunch was a great success on Friday, March 4, despite the weather necessitating a location

change from the foreshore adjacent to The Baths to the lovely Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club. More than 160 food fans attended, raising $15,000 for Sorrento Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School, Sorrento kindergarten and the Portsea Camp. A big thankyou goes to event supporters The Baths restaurant, Stringers Stores, Loquat and Sorrento Catering. A number of Mornington Peninsula wineries also donated time, skills and produce.

Warm up at the Conti. A great place to catch up with friends.

His book Seriously Good Food, Fast features an inspired collection of delicious, easy to prepare meals. The lunch-lesson will focus on creating a healthy, tasty meal in 30 minutes or less. Participants will then share the table for a friendly feast, perfectly matched with a glass of fine peninsula wine. The demonstration and lunch is intimately set in the upstairs kitchen of historic Stringers Store. At last year’s event he prepared lamb chops with couscous and minted harissa. Helen Fairlie from Stringers was preparing his yellow duck curry when we spoke. Who knows what this year will bring? Two of the 2010 lunch participants, who had never previously met, discovered they lived in Rosebud just a few doors apart. They have since become best friends, experimenting with Peter’s products and regularly visiting Stringers Store. The cooking demonstration and lunch is at noon on Monday, June 6 and is limited to 20 people. The cost of $45pp includes the meal and a glass of wine. Stringer’s Store also has a tutored tasting from Red Hill Cheese at noon on Tuesday, June 7. Learn about how the cheese is made, where the ingredients come from and enjoy a light lunch with a glass of peninsula wine. Cost is $45pp, limit 20 people. Bookings are essential for both events. Stringers Store is at 2 Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento, phone 5984 2010. sorrento village life magazine phone 9708 8222 or 5906 5771
