President’s Message

It is almost summer, already! Flowers are blooming, the days are getting longer, and I hope you are all enjoying the beauty around and inspired to capture it in paint, photography or whatever your creative outlet is. Please share your work with us at the gallery.

Art Mejeerus has added a new Black and White Photography category to our monthly competitions.

It has become apparent that one of the benefits of our membership is the fellowship we share as artists. As there is never enough time at our General Meeting for people to visit, we are working to schedule more times where our members can share art and social time.

To that end, we scheduled a “field trip” to Idyllwild June 9th, meeting at the gallery, carpooling up the hill and assembling at Mountain Pottery. There we watched a demo by master potter Art Tobias.

Many of us brought bag lunches and picnicked on the tables during the demo. After that, our group attended a workshop at Mountain Pottery where we were each invited to create a carving in clay using a technique called

President’s Message - con’t. sgraffito. This was an activity for any level. The cost was $45 for the hour-long class. Participants shaped clay, creating their design. The clay will then be glazed and fired by Mountain Pottery. Pieces will be delivered to the galley when done.

We also visited a very cute art store called the Art Department. I just loved the amazing variety of cool items they had for sale in such a small space.

An upcoming opportunity for fun is the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. Silver Lining Travel is providing a trip to this event. They allow plenty of time to visit the Sawdust Festival across the street, if you want, and to view the amazing art display at the event. Admission to the program is also part of the $155 fee. It is on July 23nd, and I hope some of you will enjoy this opportunity with me. Reserve you place now by calling 951-929-6230.

On a different note, I have been invited to join an ad hoc committee with the City of Hemet to work on ways to bring more art, music and culture to our city. We are currently working to secure a grant from the Arts in California Parks. We are in the planning stages, and the group is asking for letters from the community to support the idea that Hemet wants this and specifically, Hemet Valley Art Association is in support of this project. We are looking at art installations in our parks and how the art can be utilized to create projects that will bring a sense of community connection.

We are looking for ideas. How can our artists help and benefit from this grant money? Are there those who would be willing to commission pieces which reflect a piece of our history or our culture? Can you imagine ideas to share with me so I can pass them on to the committee? I am excited to have HVAA recognized in Hemet as the hub of the art community, and that the city wants our input. Please share any and all ideas with me. I will pass them on to our group.

Historic Hemet Theatre Takes In $15,000 at Funraiser for Kids Art Camps

Hemet Valley Art Association partnered with the Historic Hemet Theatre in May at their first annual fundraiser for kids performing arts summer camps. HVAA Members Stepheny Estes, Art Majerus and Alison Wieman donated a piece of original art as part of the silent auction.

As HVAA President Alison Wieman noted in her President’s Message, the gallery has been invited to “join an ad hoc committee with the City of Hemet to work on ways to bring more art, music and culture to our city” in part by supporting one another in various programs and ventures.

To that end, HVAA members are networking and partnering with other nonprofits in the valley. Linda Grelich, Golden Era Productions and Evening of Art supporter, was one of the sponsors for the theatre fundraiser.

HVAA Member Sheila Diggs was part of the evening’s entertainment. Sheila was recently voted the best of the best in the Hemet Theater’s “Voice of the Valley” competition.

Lynn Throckmorton, Public Relations, is spreading the word that the Hemet Valley Art Association has a gallery open 5 days a week, 6 hours a day, with new art on display every month.

June Demonstrator Karla Leopold

Introduces Members to the Art of Assemblage

“Assemblage” is an artistic form or medium usually created on a substrate, often using found and seeminly unrelated objects, assembled to create a three-dimensional piece of art. It is similar to collage, but yields a three-dimensional piece.

HVAA hosted Karla Leopold, an award-winning artist, who, as the meeting’s demonstrator for June, showed us how to create an Assemblage. She had brought samples of her work and spent time explaining how she had made a number of other pieces. She spoke of substrates, tools, glues, and taking the time to “see” the finished work in order to determine the focus of and the order in which to add the layers of objects. She loves using things like blocks, knobs, rulers, numbers, playing cards, and door handles composed and pasted down inside a box (current favorite boxes are those in which cell phones and tablets are packaged). Her largest assemblage piece is 24” x 24”. A tip, she told us, was to put the hanging wire on the back of the piece first, as the finished product is often not only 3D, and sometimes extends behond the boundries of the box or substrate.

In her artist’s statement, Leopold noted: When I was in junior high school, an art teacher told me art wasn’t for me. I have been proving him wrong ever since. As an artist, I work in a variety of mediums including stone, found objects, paint, yarn, and almost anything that can be made into art. In life I also work in a variety of fields, art, psychology and education. There is a theme in all my work which involves an underpinning of psychological significances. I challenge the viewers and participators to look deeper into the art and information I share to find and apply that which resonates for them.

At the Gallery

From the Gallery Director

Time is flying by, and as always I encourage you all to volunteer to sit. We did pretty well in May, but we still need more help.

I will be in Yellowstone and other places taking photographs for most of June, so Dianne K. will have the panel signup list if you don’t get signed up before I leave. Currently, there is one $10 and a couple $20 panels available. Contact me directly if you want one. Also, panels for July are starting to fill up, so get them while you can. Again, contact me before I leave after June COP.

Lastly, it’s time to figure out themes for the Special category for next year, so email me with your suggestions at sawdustman@mac.com or text 619-992-6532.

June’s Featured Artist: Paula Squier

“I knew my whole life that I was an artist. I just didn’t pursue it until I retired,” Paula Squier says when you ask her about it. Specifically, she began to paint when her husband was ill. “I couldn’t leave him because he might need me, but he didn’t need me all the time.” To fill her days and still be there for him, she began to paint. On one level, it was a form of therapy, pushing through the pain of her husband’s battle with cancer. After he passed away, it became a form of catharsis.

She started with a mural on an exterior wall of her home. When asked if she found the task daunting, if she sketched it out first and scaled it up, if she agonized over colors or media, she said simply, “No. I just began to paint. I wasn’t worried; I knew I could do it, that it would turn out well.” Photos from that time prove she was right.

During that time, one of her sons asked her for a waterscape painting. Working in oil, she created a piece that shows both an idyllic image of life above the waterline and life below it. Somehow that canvas was joined by two others, a panorama in the form of a triptych of life in a bay.

Today Paula still paints waterscapes. “I can’t do full-on portraits, although I can do side views; don’t know why.” But in addition to waterscapes, she loves painting landscapes. Her favorite medium is acrylic, although when it’s hot, she turns again to oil.

Her favorite style of painting is Renaissance, although her favorite artists are, for the most part, considered Impressionists or Early Moden painters: Monet, Manet, Degas, with Rembrandt as the representative of her favorite style.

Paula has just started a class at the gallery: Acrylics on Canvas. The first class was/will be (depending on when this newsletter publishes) Tuesday, June 11th, and will run from 10:00-Noon for 6 weeks, one session a week. Cost is $20 per class. To register, sign up at the gallery or contact Paula at plmsquier@gmail.com. The class is open to members and non-members alike; adults only.

HVAA Member Tracy Anderson Holds Urban Sketching Workshop Just Outside the Gallery

Tracy Anderson held a meet-up of the newly inaugurated Hemet Sketchers Friday, May, 31st, and a subsequent one June 10th. The next get together will be June 18th in Winchester. Contact Tracy for details. She can be reached at tandyart@yahoo.com. Be sure to bring a stool or chair.

What Is Urban Sketching?

In short, it is the practice of drawing what is around you in your sketchbook. It does not necessarily mean that you draw only cities, but rather it consists of capturing your personal observations and interpretations of your surroundings. It is a narrative of everyday life.

Tips for Urban Sketching:

• Get into the habit of carrying your sketchbook with you everywhere you go. I keep a small sketchbook, pencil and pen in my car so I can carry them with me when I’m out and about.

• Draw in the place where you are, through direct observation.

• Tell a story with your drawing. Add receipts, business cards and other ephemera to your sketchbook page to document a moment.

• Your drawings are a record of the time, the place where you are, and the scenes that you appreciate.

• Any type of media and individual style can be used.

• Embrace mistakes and keep drawing. Don’t rip pages out of your sketchbook or start over. Your sketchbook documents your journey as an artist. You will have good drawings and you will have bad drawings. It’s part of the process and shows your progress.

• Challenge yourself to draw every day, even if it’s only for 10 or 15 minutes.
