The Place Where Art Happens!

President’s Message

I’d like to thank those gallery members who have passed forward pieces of their art as raffle items at our monthly member meeting. It benefits the giver as they are sharing and passing forward their creative art, and it benefits the receiver, the lucky member who wins that art after buying raffle tickets. The cost to hold the member meeting is $250 and in April, proceeds from selling raffle tickets were nearly $300. Several members went home with a treasure.

PassingForward “Stuff”

In the past few months my husband Bob and I decided it was time to pack up my photographs and pass them forward to three of our family members. We are fortunate to have time to ponder our “stuff” and what we really want our family to have so “stuff” does not end up in a garage sale.

When I joined HVAA, I never dreamed I would dabble in photography. Photography is a personal moment in time in space. What did I see at that moment that caught my eye? What piece of art deco found at the Vintage Marketplace in Palm Springs inspired me to do a photo shoot? What story could I capture in a photograph that would catch the attention of the viewer?

Art can be a fantasy or a reality. I personally own photographs by three of our gallery members. One is a photograph of a butterfly and a bumblebee. That is reality. One was taken of the inside of a glass ball, and that was a cross between reality

HVAA President Lynn Throckmorton (left) with artist and new member Diane Woodcock. Diane moved from Portland, Oregon 10 years ago. About her art, she said, “I love finding junk jewelry, taking it apart and creating designs. The background for each is velvet and the finished product is put in a shadow box.” Welcome, Diane!

President’s Message - Cont’d from p. 1 and fantasy. My favorite is of a butterfly wing, where the photograph was manipulated on the computer. It is sheer fantasy and when you realize it was a butterfly wing, and it looks like the inside of a seashell, well, it’s very creative. The fourth photograph almost looks like a painting, yet it was entered in “Any Place, Any Time” for CoP. The colors and the shapes are an allusion of the actual place and time.

All of these photographers share their creative genius by hanging their art at the gallery. Have you spent time looking at the many forms of creativity there? Do you share your art by hanging it on a panel or entering it in Change of Painting? Do you ask yourself, “Should I try that?” All of the artists are sharing their “stuff” with hopes others will be inspired to grab that camera, that smart phone, that paint brush, that carving tool…

I invite each of our members to help market the gallery. The success of each member depends on the support of each member. All of our art is our personal “stuff,” and when we share it with others, it lives on. My personal photographs will have new homes, and will no longer be “stuff” here in Hemet. Today I’m looking forward to new art forms, and I invite you to join me. Now I can create new ‘stuff.”

“Look at a piece of art...that speaks to you, that sends out energy. That’s what you want in your paintings,” workshop instructor Valentina Landin advised her students. “Just pick up your brush and let it flow.”

Art Demonstration Saturday: Sheryl Stradling, Mixed Media Artist

Our May Art Demonstration Saturday featured mixed media artist Sheryl Stradling whose work is eclectic, taking inspiration from nature, architecture, Asian culture and cross-cultural symbols. Sheryl calls herself an “experimental” artist, and says she usually starts a work with no firm plan, seldom a theme, just a general idea.

In a handout Sheryl provided, she defined mixed media as “work [that] includes a variety of techniques and materials in a single piece of art. This allows a greater freedom of expression as well as exploration. Mixed media can include painting, collage, drawing, printmaking, assemblage and even sculpture in a single piece.

“She added that, “Early examples of collage have been found in Chinese art around 200 BC, after the invention of paper, and later in Japanese art. Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso are credited with the modern development of collage art in the context of Cubism.”

talked about different types of media, their strong points and their drawbacks. She encouraged her audience to experiment with adding paint or making marks to complete the image.

It was an interesting presentation, because as we watched her hands create a finished piece of art out of seemingly random bits and piece of primarily magazine cutouts, she spoke in practical terms of things like glues, coatings, and papers. She was full of good tips.

She spoke about looking for interesting shapes, of ways to spot check values with a cell phone pic or by looking at the piece in a mirror. She

She agreed to do a workshop. We are waiting for those plans to come together!

The afternoon was also marked by another great raffle. Linda Baranek, Vicki Moran, and Virginia Melton donated art, while Nipa Swope donated a wonderful deluxe table easel. And there were 20 other raffle items in the mix. Snacks were good, too!

Our Demo Artist is Rachel Welch!!

Rafßes! Snacks! All are Welcome!

Drawing in my sketchbook, as close to daily as I can, grounds me in this somewhat chaotic world. I see patterns that emerge, in the colors I gravitate towards and the marks I make, the way the petals of a ßower alternate, reßections in water or the distortion caused by looking through glass.

Looks like we made it through EOA successfully.

Moving forward it’s time for everybody to step up and keep all the display panels full once again. Contact me for availability.

I recently spent a day painting display items in the gallery so now all of the pedestals and the bookcase are a bright light color. Additionally, the carpet has been professionally cleaned. Now if everyone could help to keep the gallery clean. We don’t have a trash service so if you generate a lot of trash during a class or while sitting, it would help if you took it with you and disposed of it at home.

Some display panel changes will be coming in July.

Still need somebody to step up as director for next year. Let me know if you are interested. Art

FeaturedVickiArtistMoran

Vicki Moran has been a member of Hemet Valley Art Association since retiring in 2014. Her first class at the gallery was pencil drawing, and then she began attending Joyce Thomas’ watercolor workshops.

Somehow she talked her way into Betty Pilley’s advanced watercolor class. She remains a devoted student of Betty’s today and attributes her progress to Betty’s teaching and encouragement.

She has also learned from Robert Willis and Janice Cipriani-Willis.

Currently, Vicki enjoys painting watercolor on Yupo (a plastic paper) and experimenting with charcoal.

Vicki has won numerous Best of Show Awards at HVAA. In addition to HVAA, her work has been displayed at Dorland Mountain Arts, The Merc in Temecula, North Coast Gallery in Carslbad, Redlands Art Association, and Brandon Gallery in Fallbrook.
