WWII JAPANESE MILITARY ORDER OF THE SACRED TREASURE 3RD CLASS The Order of the Sacred Treasure (瑞宝章? Originally awarded in eight classes (from 8th to 1st, in ascending order of importance), since 2003 it has been awarded in six classes, the lowest two medals being abolished that year. The most widely conferred Japanese order, it is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in research fields, business industries, health care, social work, state/ local government fields or the improvement of life for handicapped/impaired persons. Originally a male-only decoration, the order has been made available to women since 1919; it is awarded for both civil and military merit, though of a lesser degree than that required for the conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun. LOT 94

CASED JAPANESE ORDER OF THE RISING SUN 4TH CLASS, WWII The Order of the Rising Sun (旭日章? Kyokujitsu-shō) is a Japanese order, established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan. The Order was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese government,[1] created on 10 April 1875 by decree of the Council of State.[2] The badge features rays of sunlight from the rising sun. The design of the Rising Sun symbolizes energy as powerful as the rising sun[3] in parallel with the “rising sun” concept of Japan (“Land of the Rising Sun”). The order is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in the following fields: international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment.[4] Prior to the end of World War II, it was also awarded for exemplary military service. Beginning in 2003, the two lowest rankings (7th and 8th classes) for the Order of the Rising Sun were abolished, with the highest degree becoming a separate order known as the Order of the Paulownia Flowers, with the single rank of Grand Cordon. While it is the third highest order bestowed by the Japanese government, it is however generally the highest ordinarily conferred order. The highest Japanese order, the Order of the Chrysanthemum, is reserved for heads of state or royalty, while the second highest order, the Order of the Paulownia Flowers, is mostly reserved for politicians. LOT 143

RUSSIAN ZLATOUST PRESENTATION CUTLAS, 1904 – 1905 This item is a Russian presentation Naval saber (or Cutlass ) to reward members of the of the 2nd Pacific Fleet Squadron for the Port Arthur Campaign (1904 – 1905) in the Russo-Japanese War, manufactured by the Zalatoust Arms Manufacturer. The inscription, in Russian, is in gold etched onto the blade and reads as follows: “TO THE VICTORIOUS CHRIST-LOVING ARMY OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN FLEET SQUADRON FROM THE STANDARD BEARERS OF THE ORTHODOX CATHEDRALS OF MOSCOW CITY 1905”. On the blade’s rib, the inscription, “Zlatoust 1859 (17/?). Historical Note: The 2nd Pacific Squadron had not surrendered to the Japanese. There were originally 7 ships. Four broke through the opposing fleet to make it to Vladivostok – the “Diamond”, the “Emerald”, the “Brave” and the “Terrible” but the “Emerald” sank sometime shortly thereafter. The remaining 3 ships were only able to reach Manila in the Philippines. (The “Oleg”, the “Aurora” and the “Pearl”). The Sword would presumably not be presented to a non victorious ship as the inscription clearly uses the word “Victorious”. The ships reaching Manila probably not have been given such an award even though they had evaded capture and left the battlefield undefeated they also had failed to complete their mission and return to a Russian port. This leaves only 3 ships which remained afloat which had broken out to reach Russia. The “Diamond”, the “Brave” and the “Terrible”. Of those three ships only the “Diamond” ever returned to Europe only to be eventually interred by France after the outbreak of the Russian Civil War (1918–1922) It is highly probable that the sword was awarded to a member of the crew of the “Diamond”. Condition: Very good, with blade slightly pitted towards the tip. Overall length: 35 in., 88.9 cm., blade: 28 1/2 in., 71.2 cm. Estimate: $55000-65000

Neither HELIOS nor its consignors are responsible in any way for errors and omissions in the catalogue, condition reports, or any other supplemental materials. HELIOS will have no obligation, i.e., no refunds or returns will be accepted, if the above conditions are not met.
