STYLE Lot : 22 Auction Date: June 12, 2016 Estimate: $2,500.00 - $5,000.00 Starting Price: $500.00 Condition: In the 14th century an interesting version of the Rondel dagger appeared. This was the eared dagger, which shares its heritage with the blade known to the Turks as the yatagan and to the Cossacks as the shashqa. The pommel of eared daggers was split in two to allow the thumb to be hooked over the pommel to impart greater force to the stabbing blow. Curiously, despite its odd appearance, the eared dagger became widely associated with royalty and was also a favorite weapon of assassins in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries. An Eared dagger is a relatively rare and exotic form of dagger that was used during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. It is so named because the pommel of the dagger has a very distinctive shape, somewhat resembling human ears. Eared daggers frequently have a single sharpened edge that ends in an acute point. It is thought that the eared dagger was introduced to Europe from Spain, where it presumably originated from the Moors.

Offered here is a fine later example of such Nobleman's dagger, from the Toledo Spain arms makers, famous throughout the whole world for making some of the Finest weapons in the World's history, having beautiful quality chiseled and gold inlaid blade

Maries, près le Pont-Neuf, au Dieu Mars, using variations of this address on his blades. The Ecole Royale Militaire, or Royal Military College, was founded in 1751 and closed in 1787, having changed its name to Ecole des Cadets-gentilhommes around 1776/77. This would appear to date the blade between 1770 and 1777, though it is possible the old name of the college was continued in common use for some time after the official name change. Napoleon Bonaparte attended the college in 1784, leaving in October, 1785 as a second class lieutenant of artillery. Napoleon returned in 1795 to establish his command headquarters in the building. A very similar hilt is found on a sword in Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland (see Cyril Mazansky, British Basket-Hilted Swords, p. 167).
