Helena Parks and Recreation Guide Summer 2025

Director’s Letter

Hello Helena,

The City of Helena Parks, Recreation and Open Lands Department is excited to present our Parks and Recreation Guide for Summer 2025. Inside you will find information on summer favorites like golf, swimming lessons, summer camp along with information on open lands and parks improvements.

You will have undoubtedly noticed the changes being made to the Helena Fire Tower. Our community’s historic fire tower is being restored by hand using locally sourced Douglas Fir. The structure has faced fires, earthquakes and general wear and tear. To avoid an eventual collapse, we have taken action to replace compromised pieces. We anticipate this project to be completed in 2025.

Bill Roberts Golf Course is already opened, with its earliest ever opening date of March 12th. This municipal golf course offers plenty of opportunities for beginners and experts alike. Book a private lesson with our Golf Professional, sign up for the Wine & Wedges- a woman only beginning guide to golf, or hit a bucket of balls on the driving range. If you’re looking for something to do as a family, check out Friday nights. Kids play for free with an adult during a relaxed pace of play.

The Last Chance Splash Waterpark and Pool will be open with regular hours. The pool staff are all Red Cross certified. To become a lifeguard, participants must pass a swim test, complete six hours of online work and complete twenty-two hours of in-person training that includes two written exams and three physical tests. The more than forty lifeguards that work there have all completed the certification training. To become a certified Water Safety Instructor, participants must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, butterfly and treading water. They must complete 31 hours of in-person training that includes classroom management and safety, water survival skills, stroke mechanics, lesson plan creation, practice teaching and a written exam. This pool certifies Water Safety Instructors every year to keep up with the demands of the one thousand two hundred and fifty-six open swim lesson spaces.

Our free summer camp Kay’s Kids will be back for its 28th year in Helena. The City of Helena recruits, interviews, hires, CPR certifies and trains camp staff. The Kay McKenna Youth Foundation sponsors the program and pays for staff wages and camp costs so that the program can remain free to all children ages six to nine.

Our parks reservation and pavilion rental system is easier than ever. With our updated website, photos can be viewed of each park and the amenities within it. Our online system streamlines the process of selecting a park and reserving it for your gathering. None of this would be possible without our dedicated Parks, Recreation, Open Lands, Golf Course and Civic Center staff who work tirelessly to care for these shared public spaces. We are here to serve you and here to provide you with the recreation opportunities that keep you and your family outside, moving, breathing fresh air and connected to your community.

Thank you, Doug Smith

Centennial Trail

City Parks

Tunnel Mural

Helena has 30 parks that include playground equipment, tennis courts, basketball courts, community events, bike and pedestrian trails, dog parks, skate parks and bike jumps. All of our parks and trails are beautifully maintained by Parks Maintenance staff and our Urban Forestry Division. These features are designed and developed so that people of all ages, abilities and incomes can participate in the excellent recreational activities this wonderful city has to offer.

Helena’s Urban Forestry

Last summer a mural in the tunnel that connects Memorial Park and Centennial Park was completed. The tunnel can be accessed on the Centennial Trail, from either park.

Division

The project was proposed from the Helena Public Art Committee and approved by the city commission. The mural was painted by Helena artist Elise Perpignano, who was selected from 13 other submissions.

Helena’s Urban Forest Division is responsible for the care of over 10,000 trees located in the city’s street rights of way, public parks and other city-owned properties. During tree cleanup after a storm, please stay away from damaged trees. There is an elevated risk for tree failure, especially during strong winds. Please refer to the grid on the next page to determine the proper steps to take when dealing with an urban forestry concern. You can also visit the Parks and Recreation tab of the city’s website for more information.

The 3,000 square-foot mural covers both walls of the tunnel. It features scenes from Helena and Montana’s history, wildlife and plants. Centennial Trail is great for pedestrians walking, running and riding bikes. It runs traffic-free from the west side of Montana WILD to National Avenue.

Tree emergency, fallen tree or branch blocking the street or sidewalk. Witnessing malicious tree damage or removal.

Street tree trimming, planting and removal.

Take a Look

Discover new parks this summer!

Take a look at this 2.3 acre park connected to community gardens. Waukesha park has room to run and play organized sports with a large open field, plenty of seating to host a birthday party or just come for an afternoon picnic.

The garden plots that extend along the edge of the park are managed by Helena Community Gardens. Kids and adults alike will enjoy peering over the fence to see the flowers and vegetables sprouting under the summer sun.

Waukesha Park

The playground features a swing-set complete with an adaptive swing. It has a balance structure, small slides, monkey bars and two large slides.

Memorial Park Playground Safety Improvements

Memorial Park Improvements

The City of Helena began working on upgrades and improvements to the playground at Memorial Park last fall to address long-term safety concerns.

More improvements will be made in the next couple of years. New playground equipment will be installed but efforts will be made to retain as much of the original structure as possible, including the wooden perimeter fence that recognizes the people involved with the original 2003 construction.

Historic Fire Tower Improvements

Our community’s historic fire tower is being restored by hand using locally sourced Douglas Fir. The structure has faced fires, earthquakes and general wear and tear.

To avoid an eventual collapse, we have taken action to replace compromised pieces. We anticipate this project to be completed in 2025.

Centennial Tunnel Mural

In the summer of 2023, a mural in the tunnel that connects Memorial Park and Centennial Park was completed. The tunnel can be accessed on the Centennial Trail, from either park.

The project was proposed from the Helena Public Art Committee and approved by the City Commission. The mural was painted by Helena artist Elise Perpignano, who was selected from 13 other submissions. She is the same artist who was selected to complete the Lyndale tunnel mural in the same park.

Lyndale Tunnel Mural

This summer the Lyndale Tunnel that honors the history of wild-land firefighting in Montana was completed. To honor 75 years since the Mann Gulch Fire the mural is a tribute to the Mann Gulch smoke jumpers, the life cycle of a forest and opens up to a depiction of the Gates of the Mountains.

The project was proposed from the Helena Public Art Committee and approved by the City Commission. The mural named “Wildfire” was painted by Helena artist Elise Perpignano, who was selected from 19 other submissions.

The Lyndale Tunnel connects Centennial Park with the Great Northern Town Center. Perpignano is also the artist behind the mural “Momentum” connecting Centennial Park to Memorial Park.

Shelter Rentals

You can reserve a park pavilion or picnic shelter. A park reservation permit guarantees the location, date and time of your scheduled event. Park reservation permits are available from April 1 to October 31. Outside of these dates, pavilions and picnic shelters are available on a first come, first served basis. If you’re hosting a special event like a non-profit fundraiser, wedding, family reunion, awareness walk/run in a park, a Special Event Permit may be required.

Rock Climbing Opportunities: Mount Helena

Explore the vertical adventure of outdoor rock climbing on the breathtaking cliffs in Mount Helena City Park. As one of the few cities in the US to offer this unique experience within city limits, Mount Helena provides a stunning backdrop for climbers of all levels.

It’s important to note that climbing outdoors requires proper equipment, knowledge, and safety measures. For those new to outdoor climbing or seeking guided climbs, Stonetree Climbing Center offers instruction and guided experiences to ensure a safe and memorable adventure. Be sure to add this experience to your summer in Helena!

Centennial Park: Bouldering Feature

Located in the back of Centennial Park, this artificial feature provides an introduction to boulderingclimbing on smaller rock formations with out the use of a rope or harness.

Open Lands Projects and Improvements

Eric Feaver Trail

Commissioner Feaver passed away in June of 2022. He was an avid trail user and a dedicated advocate for the City’s Open Lands. City staff brought forward a proposal to name the trail and trail intersection in honor of the late Commissioner, which the City Commission approved.

Eric Feaver Trail starts at Legrande Cannon Boulevard. Feaver’s Union marks the intersection of Eric Feaver Trail, Ambrose Trail, and Quarry Trail. The naming of Feaver’s Union is a nod to his long-time leadership of the Montana Federation of Public Employees.

Universal Access Trail

The Upper DeFord Universal Access Trail is a one-half-mile trail with limited incline, covered in a firm crushed rock surface. The rock surface is designed to meet ac cessibility standards. It is a down and back trail that begins and ends at Old Shooting Range Trailhead on Davis Gulch Road.

The trail was constructed with the assistance of Helena Ales for Trails, the Fish Wildlife and Parks Recreation Trails Program and by Helena’s Open Lands Department. The trailhead includes a concrete handicap accessible parking and bathrooms. It is open and ready for the public to use.

Upper Davis Bike Course

The Upper Davis Bike Skills Course was originally constructed two decades ago. A combination of user wear and weather exposure deteriorated the course. Improvements were made for a complete reconstruction of its prism and associated jump features to ensure future availability.

The bike skills course consists of .53 miles of native surfaced trail exhibiting an average width of 3 feet. Course upgrades focused on a jump course that catered to beginner and intermediate level riders, while providing features attractive to advanced riders.

The project aimed to promote user dispersal by providing a unique site for mountain bike riders to practice skills on a single use, directional trail. Helena’s South Hills Trails system is nationally recognized as a destination that annually attracts thousands of mountain bikers.

Lime Kiln Parking Lot

The Lime Kiln Trailhead parking lot was paved and stripped with funds raised by the annual Ales for Trails event. The Lime Kiln Trailhead can be used to access the Prickly Pear and Rocky Road Trails.

Free Summer CampFacts about Kay’s Kids

Kay’s Kids is a free summer camp run by the City of Helena Parks and Recreation Department. Camp is open to all Helena children ages 6-9. Campers will be at the same park, but the age groups participate in different activities with different counselors.

WHO are the Counselors?

Kay’s Kids Summer Camp Counselors are paid and trained employees of the city, they are not volunteers. All employees go through a screening and interview process before being hired. Once hired they are certified in CPR, First Aid and AED use. Counselors are trained in positive behavior interventions to best support campers, utilizing schedules to provide the best experience for campers and they also know a ton of fun games!

WHAT do we do all day?

Each week of camp has a theme, no two weeks of camp are the same. You can see what the themes are on the following pages. We have a daily activity involving the theme and we also have plenty of time to let the kids be kids. We play games, play sports, do arts and crafts, eat popcicles, play on the playground and go on multiple field trips a week.

WHEN is camp? When do I sign up?

Camp Schedule:

- June 16th - August 14th

- Monday - Thursday

- 7:45am - 3:00pm

- Memorial Park Cottage: 5 Memorial Drive, Helena 59601

Registration:

- Online: City of Helena Website

- Opens: May 1st, 7:00am

- Questions?: 406-447-8077

WHERE do we go on field trips?

Every week campers go to the pool twice and to the movies once. Sometimes we walk to our field trips like the Last Chance Train, Exploration Works, Carroll College or Great Northern Carousel. Sometimes the field trips come to us, like Montana WILD, Helena Fire Department or Cohesion Dance Project.

WHY is it free?

The Kay McKenna Youth Foundation is a non-profit that has been working to provide free summer camp in Helena for 27 years to honor their friend, the late Helena mayor Kay McKenna. They fundraise to cover camp and staffing costs and city staff run the program. There is a $25 suggested donation at registration that you can choose to pay or not pay upon checkout.

Ways to Donate

- Donate extra funds during registration

- Donate snacks - enough for 50 people

- Donate spray sunscreen, it is very appreciated!

Limited Space

When you register for a week of camp, you are taking a space in a camp with limited availability. If campers need to be removed from a week they are registered for, parents must contact the Recreation Supervisor 5 days before the beginning of camp. If a camper fails to attend camp without notice, they will be removed from any future weeks of Kay’s Kids they are registered for.

Free Lunch and Snacks

Our camp partners with the USDA Summer Meal Program to provide free lunch for our campers. This summer meal program is also available to all Helena children under the age of 18. Children do not have to be registered to Kay’s Kids to participate in the free summer meal program. To learn about the program and locations, visit their website https://helenaschools.org/departments/food-services

Campers are provided with a morning snack and afternoon snack. Please talk to us if you are interested in donating a snack for the day! We love bulk, shelf stable snacks like the kind you can buy from Costco. Children have access to water and parents are required to provide their child with a water bottle every day of camp.
