FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Hello, everyone, Before becoming mayor, I used to measure the changing of the seasons by the air temperature, the color of the leaves and football season. Now the seasons begin changing for me with the advent of budget time. In Alabama, there is no law requiring municipalities to operate within a budget. However, municipal business is now big business; so complex that most city governments find it is in their best interest and the best interest of their citizens to administer the financial business of their city through the creation of an annual budget. It is the council, not the mayor, who—by law—is held responsible

for the expenditure of municipal funds. Even so, there are no textbooks or instructions on how to create a municipal budget. Each city has the latitude to tailor the process to fit their needs and political reality. For us, the budget process actually begins the 1st of July when the department heads submit their funding needs for the upcoming year. The numbers generated are then put in a spreadsheet format by the finance director. Somewhere in the late July/early August timeframe, each department head has a meeting with the Mayor, Finance Director and Human Resources Director so that all can gain a better understanding of the requests. Next, the President of the city council schedules a series of council work sessions where each department head presents their proposed budgets to the council

members. This budget cycle required eight work sessions to hammer out the details of the budget with a lot of open dialog, discussion and late hours. It’s important for you to know your city council members do not draw any additional pay for these additional budget meetings (in spite of what the knuckleheads on AL.com would have you believe). Logically, every budget request cannot be funded. All requests must be reconciled against projected incomes and a clear priority of work. Ultimately, the final product is an exercise in planning, funding and compromise with the goal of passing the budget before the beginning of the new fiscal year on October 1st. Where the creation of a municipal budget is and will continue to be an inexact science (kind of like making sausage), I’m proud of our council members and their willingness to take a hands-on approach to this important and time consuming process. In the end, you should be proud your city council knows how the sausage is

made. I think it’s important you know these things. This issue of the Pelham City News will take us to the beginning of a new year. Let’s not forget the holidays, celebrations and municipal events between now and then that make Pelham a very special place to live. November 11—Veterans Day November 23—Oak Mountain Festival of Lights opens November 26—Thanksgiving November 30—City of Pelham Christmas Tree Lighting at the Pelham Civic Complex December 8— Beautification Board Residential and Commercial Christmas Decoration Judging December 19-20—Stevan Grebel’s The Nutcracker, Chelsea High School (The PHS Auditorium is undergoing renovation) December 25—Christmas I wish for you a safe and memorable Holiday Season. Happy Holidays everyone. I hope to see you around town.

FROM COUNCILMAN RICE Here I am again, writing the Council Letter for the holiday edition of the Pelham City News. On behalf of the council, I do wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Hanukkah and a Very Merry Christmas! Again, the city will be decorating our streets with snowflakes in preparation for the holiday events coming your way. The annual Christmas Tree Lighting is scheduled for Monday, November 30, starting at 6:30pm with plenty of entertainment and good things to eat and drink. My informant says that this year’s dessert offerings with cider and hot chocolate are being provided by the Pelham High School Culinary Arts Program. Mark your calendars for a night of family fun! The Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena is a hotbed of activity during the fall and winter. Did you see the PINK ice in October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month? I’m sure all the skaters had fun with that, especially those Alabama Hockey players! Speaking of Alabama, check out the schedule found elsewhere in the magazine for times and dates of their opening games. Pelham is hosting the Magic City Winter Classic Hockey Tournament December 4 through 6, for kids ages 5 to 18. Then on December

Rick Hayes - Place 1 rickhayes@pelhamonline.com

11, 12 and 13, our figure skaters are presenting “Christmas at the Movies.” There will be four performances, so anyone who wishes to see our children in action should be able to do so. When you come to the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena, you may notice some of the improvements installed this past year. One such project was the renovation of the practice rink to move the team boxed to the opposite side of the ice and allow for seating of up to 400 spectators. Also, the men’s locker rooms were renovated and a new women’s locker room was built. A new floor was installed in the main arena, new air walls in the banquet rooms, and a new roof over it all! I’m sure all of you have seen the new elementary school taking shape on Highway 52 East. While that school is already under construction, plans for the new middle school are very near completion. The city is working closely with the Pelham Board of Education on this project because of the other aspects of the total development. The new library and a recreation center are also planned for the area, along with the greenway/trails system, potential flood mitigation and sports fields. Residential growth has again

picked up in Pelham! Additional houses are being built in Ballantrae and Grey Oaks along with two new neighborhoods currently under construction. Some other areas are still in the design and development stages at this time. In conjunction with this, the city has spent over $700,000 on roads projects. Some streets have been repaved, some upgraded, and some improved, such as the intersection at Pelham Parkway and Yeager Parkway in front of Summer Classics. A couple of issues that have been discussed for years (it seems!) are the Highway 261 flood mitigation and the Pelham High School sidewalk projects. Believe it or not, both projects are still moving ahead (even if the progress is as slow as cold molasses)! The 261 project has received final approval to begin and the city plans to award the project in November. The PHS sidewalk is waiting on an approval from ALDOT for the relocation of utilities along Bearden Road. MAYBE these projects will actually

be completed in my lifetime! I do want to make you aware of one other event coming to the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena in 2016. It is the National Championship of Theatre on Ice. The dates for this event are not yet settled, but you can look for it in the Summer. There will be at least 800 participants in the competition who have already blocked out all the hotels in Pelham for the projected June dates. I’m sure this will be an entertaining event with quality skating since the teams are competing to be the best team in the nation. The next two months are going to be full of activities for everyone in town. I hope you will have safe travels, fun with family and friends, time to share your blessings and love enough for all! Joy and Peace,

Karyl

Taking Beauty to the Next Level— Dr. Denny Offers Botox® and other Cosmetic Treatments

By Dr. Priscila Denny

Priscila Denny, D.M.D., M.S.

Softens Wrinkles and Expression Lines ®

Over the last ten years, Dr. Priscila Denny of Oak Mountain Orthodontics has become an established member of the North Shelby community, providing children and parents of Helena, Pelham and Hoover with braces and beautiful smiles that last a lifetime. Recently there has been an expansion in the services many doctors provide to their patients, in all types and forms of medical fields (e.g. internal medicine doctors providing weight-loss treatment or in-office pharmacies). Dr. Denny expanded her services a few years ago when she began providing laser teeth whitening, as well as braces, to her patients. While Dr. Denny is an expert in producing Hollywood Smiles via braces and laser whitening, she is now offering Botox® and Derma Fill injections to help you reach the next level of beauty. Dr. Denny said, “We see these services as natural progression.” Her family has a long history of providing a wide range of cosmetic services to complement beautiful smiles. “Years ago, my brother was the first provider of Botox in his city, and my sister and brother-in-law travel the world teaching medical courses on the proper method for optimal cosmetic injection outcomes. My sister and her husband have taught hundreds of doctors, including me, how to do these injections both safely and professionally.” Dr. Denny explains that there are many reasons these type of injections are a natural fit for an orthodontic practice. “One aspect of orthodontic learning that most people aren’t aware of, is that you study the scientific and historical standards of beauty,” she said. “There are certain physical signals your face sends to others based on the relationship between the various features on your face. Orthodontists study how the alignment of your teeth affect those features. Understanding that relationship is also key to

understanding how Botox and other injections can give you an optimal youthful appearance.” Dr. Denny studied at UAB with one of the leading oral maxillofacial surgeons in the nation. “As part of our course of study, at UAB we discussed how orthodontist have a unique skill set and training that makes them a natural choice to provide Botox and other kinds of cosmetic treatment.” • Orthodontists are doctors trained to do complex non-sedation procedures. • Orthodontists understand smile architecture and the traditional proportions for facial beauty. • Orthodontists have specialized training with needles and attention to facial details. • Orthodontists are trained to have precise dexterity. Furthermore, Botox injections are used in the treatment of other problems that relate directly to orthodontics such as jaw issues including TMJ problems. Another fact many people are not aware of is that even though Botox injections wear off after several months, the benefits can be longlasting because the injections prevent the forming or deepening of new wrinkles for as long as the effects of the Botox last. “We are providing treatment to both men and women, but being a woman, I understand the desire some will have to keep a procedure such as this discrete,” Dr. Denny said. “Some people don’t want anyone to know they have had the procedure done.” “We have two offices, one in Helena and one in Pelham, and we will offer special appointment times for our Botox® patients and accommodate them at the office of their choosing. Offering this service is something we have given a lot of thought to and something we are providing in both a convenient yet discrete manner. “ To find out more, call 682-7488 and speak to Amy about how you can start looking your absolute best today!

Fire Department recognized for money raised for breast cancer, MDA In October, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Pelham Fire Department sold pink T-shirts with a commemorative fire department logo for $15.00 each. Pelham Firefighters can be seen wearing the shirts in the photo below left, and the design is seen bottom right. Pelham residents can also adopt a fire hydrant of their choice in the city for $100.00. For this donation, a firefighter will paint the hydrant pink and put a sign on it in honor or memory of a person of the adopters’ choice. Adopted hydrants will remain pink through November, Fire Chief Danny Ray said in the quarterly Business Council Meeting. Mayor Waters sponsored a hydrant for his late mother, Winona Jean Waters, who died of cancer on December 10, 2002. This hydrant and sign can be seen to the left. If you wish to have a fire hydrant painted in honor of a loved one, and make a donation to cancer research, call Robin at the Pelham Fire Department, 620-6500. All funds raised by the Pelham Fire Department through T-shirt

sales and fire hydrant adoptions will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. More information about the foundation can be found at www.bcrfa.org. Along with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Pelham, Mayor Waters also proclaimed October 2015 as Pelham Fire Appreciation Month at the October 19 City Council meeting. But before reading the proclamation, he paused to share with those present a letter sent to Pelham firefighters by Mike Brookings. Mike and his wife have not been in the city long; they are visiting Pelham to help his mother-in-law through health issues. When an unforeseen emergency occurred where they were staying at the new apartments at Grand Reserve, they called Pelham’s first responders for help. Immediately after getting off the phone, Mike walked outside and could hear the sirens wailing. The letter explained that it was comforting to know the engine was on the way, and so quickly. He was impressed by the

speed at which they reached the apartment complex, and praised the department for keeping its firemen up-to-date on the layout of the city. Mike’s letter specifically thanked the firemen of Station 4 on Engine 93 for their assistance that night, and for their speed in responding to such a new apartment complex. Next, Erin Franklin, a representative for the Muscular Dustrophy Association, also presented the Pelham Fire Department with a plaque in appreciation for all their hard work raising money for MDA. Firefighters have been hosting the Fill The Boot fundraiser for MDA since the 1950s. The Pelham FD has participated since 1998, and raised over $81,000 for MDA in that short time frame. “We

wanted to do something to recognise the Pelham Fire Department for all the help and hope that money has brought us over the years,” Erin Franklin said. “Thank you.”

New archery range at Oak Mountain State Park After months of planning and construction, the grand opening for Oak Mountain State Park’s new Archery Range was held August 4, making it the 11th community archery park to open in the state. It is now open year-round during normal park daylight hours for recreational shooting, tournaments and outdoor educational programs. The park allowed groups of kids try archery for free each Tuesday in October. According to the park website, this was to allow children to try archery, to make sure it is an activity they might really be interested in before making their parents go out and buy equipment. Each session taught kids basic rules, the different parts of bows and arrows and the proper stance before allowing them to practice techniques for shooting and collecting the arrows afterward. The range is fairly large, featuring twenty targets in three sections, a 12-foot high wooden shooting platform for bow hunters and small pavilion with bathrooms and picnic tables off to the side. There are eight targets in the adult section, which are placed at intervals from 15 to 50 yards away. The eight targets in the youth section run a little shorter, from 5 to 20 yards away. The final four targets are between 10 and 40 yards in front of the shooting platform. This platform was included specifically for bow hunters to practice shooting from an elevated position, and archers must strap in with a harness when using the platform for safety. All archers must bring their own bow and arrows to use. Only arrows with field or target points, not broadheads, may be used. Use of the archery park is free for those under 16 years of age or over 65 years of age, although Oak Mountain entry fees

still apply. Alabama residents ages 16 to 64 must have a hunting license, Wildlife Management Area license, or Wildlife Heritage license in order to shoot in the range. For non-residents, an annual Wildlife Management Area license or non-resident hunting license is required. Licenses are available from various local retailers or online at OutdoorAlabama.com. The Park Naturalist is certified to teach archery classes and is happy to set up a class for teachers, Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, or anyone interested in learning about archery. For more information or to schedule an archery class, please call 620-2520 or email OakMountain. naturalist@dcnr.alabama.gov. PHS Volleyball makes it all the way to Elite 8 in State Championship PHS Volleyball had a wonderful season this year, making it all the way to the Elite 8 of the AHSAA 6A Volleyball State Championship before they were forced out of the competition. On Friday, October 23, during the South Super Regionals, the Lady Panthers beat Saraland 3-0, and on Saturday, they beat Northview 3-0. These huge wins at the Crampton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery allowed them to advance to the State Playoffs. In the seeding part of the Super Regionals tournament, the team lost to Spanish Fort 3-0 but defeated Daphne 3-1 to get the #3 seed for the South. In the Elite 8, the Lady

Panthers were matched up with the No. 2 seed out of the North, the Arab Lady Knights. These two teams went head-to-head-tohead with Mountain Brook in a tri-match on October 9, where Arab beat Pelham in two sets. Their second meeting was very similar—Arab beat Pelham in three straight sets. “We knew what we were getting ourselves into,” PHS Volleyball Head Coach Perry Robinson said after the match. “Arab has a very good team, they don’t make mistakes. They play volleyball simple, and honestly that’s the best way to play volleyball.” Although they were unable to make it to the final four, the Lady

Panthers still finished the season with a 26-30 overall record and their third consecutive trip to the state tournament. Its no secret that these student athletes and coaches of the PHS Volleyball team have solidified themselves as one of the top 6A programs in the state. “I think this was a great season,” Coach Robinson said. “At Pelham we pride ourselves on playing a competitive regular season schedule. We’re in that Birmingham area so we have a lot of good teams right there, and we’re going to play them. That’s what makes us better.” Pelham is losing five seniors at the end of this year: Jordan

Allison, Erin Hines, Sarah Sudd, Josie Harwood and Courtney Hayhurst. But Coach Robinson isn’t worried. “We got some young players that are here that didn’t play, but we’re excited about them,” he said. “As usual we’re going to have our work cut out for us. We’re still excited about what Pelham volleyball stands for. I think we’ll be competitive next year, whether we get back here, who knows.” With all the great talent still left on the team, aided by rising RMS 9th graders who won their Southern Conference Championship this year, we think they have a pretty good chance. Congratulations, Lady Panthers!

DID YOU KNOW? One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Each year, over 230,000

women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Although breast cancer in men is rare, 2,350 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 440 will die each year. But—over 2.9 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today, and when breast cancer is detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 100%. Please perform self-exams often.

Budget shortfalls, revenue transfers threaten Oak Mountain State Park Over the last four years, more than $27 million in funding has been taken away from Alabama’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and funneled into the Alabama General Fund budget. An earlier proposed budget, passed by the Alabama State Senate that would have resulted in the closure of 22 of Alabama State Parks, was vetoed by Governor Robert Bentley. However, the finalized 2016 general fund budget still called for another $3 million to be diverted from the DCNR, which lead to the closing of 5 parks. Other parks and facilities have reduced staff and hours. On October 15, Bladon Springs, Paul Grist, Chickasaw, Florala and Roland Cooper state parks closed. Rickwood Caverns and Blue Springs will now close during fall and winter. Desoto and Cheaha Lodge and Restaurant will open only on weekends in fall and winter. Bucks Pocket campground will transition to an unmanned, dayuse only park. Day fees at parks have gone up from $4 to $5 per adult at larger parks and there is an 8% increase on base lodging rates. A new 5% discount for Alabama residents softens the blow slightly. So far, OMSP has been spared from budget cuts, but its luck could run out as time goes on. According to State Parks Director Greg Lein, transfers over the last four years have completely emptied the DCNR’s emergency and reserve funds. The money that has already been transferred over the past year comes directly from the licenses and park fees that users pay when they enter the facilities. Mayor Waters reminds us that OMSP is not funded by taxes, but only that revenue from visitor entry fees. “Leave it to the Alabama politicians to draw money from a division that was

generating income,” said. And generate it does—in 2012, the park brought in more than $3 million total revenue for the state. “I’m not surprised, but I am disappointed,” the mayor continued. “In the absence of Gulf State Park, Oak Mountain is one of the remaining stars in the crown of the park system, along with Guntersville and Wheeler.” He’s right: in 2014, more than 386,000 people visited OMSP, and the numbers don’t lie. According to Shelby County Manager Alex Dudchock, by the end of the year, more than 400,000 guests will have come through the park. “Where I don’t believe OMSP was ever at risk of closing, I am sorry for all hard working Alabama taxpayers that they made the decision to close five of the parks,” Mayor Waters said. “Between what the city of Pelham attempts to do and what Shelby County has done for this park, we have done our part. What’s missing is the part that the state of Alabama should be playing in properly funding this park. That’s where the deficit is, in my opinion.” County Manager Dudchock affirmed this. “As of right now,

Shelby County has invested and pledged $3.1 million for existing infrastructure improvements,” he said. “We just need the state legislature to step up and be a true partner with us.” He also announced, at the end of October, that the OMSP Hotel and Conference Center project has been suspended for now, due entirely to budget concerns. Mayor Waters knows Oak Mountain is important to many beyond the borders of the city or the county. “This is a jewel for all of Alabama,” he said. “But this isn’t just a park to us here in

Pelham, this is our backyard.” He, and our hardworking employees at state parks across the state, implore you to support your local park. For more information on park closings, reduced operating hours and fee changes, please visit Alapark.com. For up-to-date information on how you can help stop legislators from taking money from our parks next year, please visit AlParksPartners. com. T-shirts to support the DCNR can be purchased at alstateparkspartners15.itemorder. com/sale.

Pelham Racquet Club Team Wins Qualifier For Nationals

2015 USTA Southern Sectional Champions-7.0 Mixed Doubles. Left to Right: John Brackin, Savannah Roberts, Bill Kugler, Amy Sanford, Greg Mills, Tina Mills, Ray Davenport, Tracey Walsh, Zach Ryals, Lindsay Grant, Rusty Wilkes.

On October 11, the Pelham Racquet Club 7.0 Mixed Doubles Tennis Team won the USTA Southern Sectional Tourney. This qualified the team to play in the USTA National Championships. The team is captained by Rusty Wilkes and Tracey Walsh, and their road to Nationals started six years ago. In 2010, the captains put together a 7.0 mixed doubles team with several good friends. “We did not do very well the first year at state, but, we knew we had a good team,” Rusty said. “So we continued to practice, play leagues and add more good players. We had no idea how much fun and success the team would have ahead.” They won their fist state championship in 2011 vs Dothan, then in 2012 vs Tuscaloosa, and again in 2013 vs Anniston. After winning state, the team had a goal each year to win a sectional tourney. In 2011, the team went 4-0 at sectionals before losing to Kentucky. The team was only one match away from the sectional final. In 2012, they went 0-4 at sectionals. So, both years playing in Macon, Georgia were disappointing sectionals. In 2013, they took a step forward going 5-0, making the sectional finals in Mobile. In the finals vs Tennessee, 22 PelhamOnline.com / Holiday 2015

Rusty and his partner Alana Hawk came back from down 0-4 to win their court 7-5, 6-2. Greg Mills and his partner lost a close 3rd set tiebreaker. With the match tied 1-1, John Brackin and partner Tracey Walsh fought back from a set down, to split sets with the Tennessee team. However, they came up just a few points short in the 3rd set tiebreak. Rusty said this was a heartbreaking loss for the whole team, as they were only points away from making nationals. In 2014, they team qualified for state. But, they did not make the state finals for the first time in four years. “After winning three straight state titles and not winning state in 2014, it could have been a good time to say ‘we had a good run as a team, but maybe our best was behind us,’” Rusty said. “But we never gave up on our dream to win state again and make nationals.” This year, in the spring, the team went 8-0 to win the spring league and qualified to play at state for the 6th straight year in Dothan. In September, at state, the team went 5-0 defeating Decatur, Dothan, Gulf Shores, Huntsville and Mobile to make the finals. “This was our best team so far, as we won every court we played at state,” Rusty said. Tracey and Zach Ryals were 3-0

in division play. In the finals vs Huntsville, Bill Kugler and Amy Sanford won 6-1, 6-3; they were 4-0 at state. Rusty Wilkes/Lindsay Grant won 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 to clinch the state championship for the team. Wilkes/Grant went 5-0 at state. John Brackin/Savannah Roberts won their finals match 7-6, 7-5 to give the team a 3-0 finals win. Brackin/Roberts were also 5-0 at state. “None of our 3 previous championship teams had won every court at state, so we had a feeling this might be our year to win sectionals,” Rusty said. The team traveled to Chattanooga, Tennessee for sectionals. In the first round vs Louisiana, Wilkes/Grant won 6-1, 6-1. Kugler/Sanford lost a close 3rd set tie-break match. With the teams tied 1-1, Walsh/Ryals were down a set and down 3-5. But they fought back to win the second set and win the 3rd set tiebreaker to get the team win. “Without Zach and Tracey coming back to win this match, I’m not sure if our team would have won the tourney,” Rusty said. The PRC team defeated Arkansas 3-0 with wins from Greg Mills/Amy Sanford, Ray Davenport/Tina Mills and Wilkes/ Grant. In the Georgia match, Kugler and Grant won. John Brackin/Savannah Roberts lost. Once again, Tracey Walsh and Zach Ryals won their court for a 2-1 team win. The team won 2-1 vs SC with wins from Brackin/

Roberts and Greg Mills/Lindsay Grant. In the finals match vs Kentucky, Walsh/Ryals lost, but Greg Mills and Lindsay Grant won 6-3, 6-1 to tie the team match. With Alabama and Kentucky now tied 1-1, Rusty Wilkes and Amy Sanford won 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the team win, & the sectional championship. “It was very important to me to get most the same players back in the sectional final who had played back in 2013,” Rusty said. “I know it was tough for them to lose the finals match back in 2013, that loss was tough for all our team. But, my team has always been about friendships first, and believing any of us can and will win when it counts most. So, I’m glad all of us got another chance. I’m proud our team finally won a sectional.” “I’m more proud of how we won. We only needed 6 players per match, but we brought 11 players. Every team member played at least 2 matches and all players won when it counted most. No one player was more important than any other. We won as a team—that makes me very proud. Winning is great, but it’s even better with great friends.” “We also had great support from family and friends who came to these tourneys every year to cheer us on,” Rusty concluded. This team will travel to Tucson, Arizona in November to compete in the USTA National Championships.

RMS Volleyball team wins Southern Conference Championship

Congratulations to the Riverchase Middle School 8th grade volleyball team for winning the 2015 Southern Conference Championship, making them back-to-back champs! This team, comprised of 8th graders and one 7th grader, won their opening tournament at Pelham High School and did not lose a single match for the rest of the league season. Quite a fantastic accomplishment for these young student-athletes! “These girls are a family—they

support and take care of each other,” said Coach Polly Jones. “Everyone helped when someone messed up. They all took their roles and gave 110%. It was absolutely a team effort.” She went on to describe the 8th grade team last year, saying they struggled and fought for every win they had. “They definitely had talent, like this year’s team, but they were more scrappy than anything else. This year, we focused more on fundamentals, and it paid off.” The lone 7th grade student

on the team, Emma McKenney, served as their middle, and ended up being one of the real anchor athletes on the team. Unfortunately, in a weekend tournament game against Pizits, Emma’s shoulder was thrown out of place. The injury took her out of the game, and the team never recovered—they were too concerned. That loss was one of only two during weekend tournaments. Coach Jones weighed in on the other: “We just had a bad day, and John Carroll played lights out. They were our true test this year.” Team Captain Erin Long was another great athlete for the team and their MVP for the Southern Conference. Ashley Anderson and Holly Helms were also MVPs this season, each being named to all-county tournament teams, according to Coach

Tiffany Wright. The 7th grade team also did very well, winning their end of season tournament. “They have enough talent for the sport that I think we have a chance to do a ‘three-peat,’” Coach Jones said. “We’ve done it before, and it would be nice to do it again. The girls really want that picture on the wall of the RMS gym, and I promised this group, if they win the championship, they will have their picture on the wall.” Congratulations to Coach Jones, Coach Wright and all the wonderful, talented students on both teams for having such a fantastic season. Go Lady Panthers!

Stand-Up Paddle Boarding in town!

Denise Wheeler and her husband Brad, owners of Pelham Family Chiropractic, have taken up Stand Up Paddle Boarding in the past several years. For those unaware, you stand atop a sturdy board floating on the water, and use a long paddle to gently push yourself along. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a paddle board is a vessel, so anyone using one should wear a floatation device for safety. Leaders in the industry say wearing a leash attached to your board and a whistle around your neck is a good idea, too, just like many surfers do. But by and

boards to surf on the waves at the beach, and that adds a whole new dimension to it,” Brad said. “But once you have your board, you can paddle just about anywhere that has water.” With paddle board yoga, paddle board Crossfit and paddle board nature tours on the rise, maybe it’s time for you to try this growing trend! Don’t be afraid of falling in (although you might the first couple of times you try). Brad explained you will get used to the board quickly and can have a lot of fun. “I would love to see more paddlers out here!” he said.

large, Stand Up Paddle Boarding is a great, fun and safe activity for taking in Alabama’s beautiful scenery. And since you set your own pace, it can be great for both exercise and leisure. “It’s really nice to paddle along Buck Creek down to the waterfall, or just about anywhere around here with water,” Brad said. Then he laughed, “One of these days, after a big rain, I’m gonna take my board over the falls.” We will be sure to be around for pictures when he attempts this feat! The sport has taken off among other avid outdoors-loving folks

around here as well, especially around Oak Mountain. If you don’t want to go out and purchase your own board right away, you can rent one at Oak Mountain State Park and paddle to your heart’s content along Double Oak Lake. Parents and kids can even ride on one together to get a feel for it. And once you’ve tried Stand Up Paddle Boarding, you might just get hooked! “It’s a beautiful pastime, and it’s pretty cheap,” Brad said. There are boards balanced specifically for people of different heights, and engineered for ease of use in different types of water, and he and Denise think buying their own boards has definitely been worth the price. “We have a place in Pensacola, where we can use the

Meet the 2015 Pelham High School Senior Lettermen! Jean Coker, a math teacher at PHS for the past eight years, serves as the school’s faculty sponsor for the Lettermen—students who paint their bodies for school sport events. Letters on their stomachs to spell out “GO PELHAM.” On their backs, they paint slogans like “Put ‘Em on a Leash” or “Pound the Puppies” that take jibes at the team Pelham is playing (in this case, the Helena Huskies). They painted “GO SENIORS” on their stomachs for senior night, with last names on their backs—the entire group is seniors this year. For Homecoming, they painted on tuxedo shirts, complete with pink bowties for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The group raised over $400 for Susan G. Komen this season, a feat of which they are very proud. “The Pelham football team has had Lettermen supporting them for many years,” Jean said. “But for the longest time, there was no sponsor.” Instead, at that time, groups of energetic PHS students would get together and plan everything themselves, and the school had no say in what they could wear or do at football games. That changed in 2007 when Mrs. Coker took over.

Now, interested students have to fill out an application and keep up their grades for a spot in the group. “Students really benefit from learning what it means to be a Letterman—they become leaders in the school, learn how to be responsible in what they do and how they act,” Mrs. Coker said. “And this is a good group of seniors.” Muhammad Hummad, the G, wanted to have a new experience his senior year. Jacob Bryant, the O, said he wanted to be more involved, and thought it would be fun to hang out with friends. Joe Schifano, the P, and Karl Nagal, the E, both thought being a Lettermen would be a fun way to support the team. Blake English, the L, just wants to have a good time! Joseph Burnett, the H, said, “I have been coming to PHS games since the 6th grade, and when I saw those guys going absolutely nuts, I thought, ‘that’s me!’” Aidan Nicholas, the A, wanted to make an impact during his senior year. Griffin Evanko, the M, just wanted to “run around like an idiot” for school spirit. And Christian Goecke, the !, wanted to put himself out there and do something for the school. Good job, guys! GO HAM!

Officer Jason Vandiver performs in South City Theatre’s The Mousetrap

Above left: Jeffrey Martin prepares Pelham Police Officer Jason Vandiver for his role as Paravacini. All other photos courtesy Stephen Ross and South City Theatre.

Pelham Police Officer Jason Vandiver had a busy September and October. On top of his normal duties with the Pelham Police Department, he spent nights and weekends at South City Theatre on Pelham Parkway, rehearsing as part of a small cast in their first show of the season. On October 9, 10, 11, 15 and 17, he could be seen portraying the unexpected foreigner Paravacini, thick accent, dark humor and all, in the theatre adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel The Mousetrap. It was directed for South City Theatre by Donna Williamson. “A mutual friend of mine and Donna’s told me she was looking for a few good men, with mustaches, so I decided to audition,” Jason said. “When they asked for my resume, I said, ‘I’m 40 years old and have a mustache!’” He laughed. “I’ve been having a great time.” This isn’t Jason’s first time on the stage, however. His son, Patrick, is interested in theatre and convinced him to come along to a table read of The Music Man at the Conservatory of Arts in Vestavia. They forced him to read a part, and he did so well that they cast him in the major role of Mayor Shinn. Something similar has

28 PelhamOnline.com / Holiday 2015

happened to them a couple other times, too. “Patrick is tired of being upstaged by his dad,” Jason said, laughing once again. In The Mousetrap, he was joined by Meg Young and Michael Wilbanks, who played the young couple opening Monkswell Manor, the guesthouse where the play takes place. Tensions mount with the arrivals of their first four guests, played by Corey Winston, Courtney Rohella, Bill Nixon (another Pelham city employee—he works at Ballantrae) and Alisha Ammons, because a murder has taken place in nearby London, the killer is on the loose, and a sudden blizzard has everyone’s nerves on edge. Everything comes to a head with the unexpected arrivals of the mysterious and darkly funny stranger Paravicini and Sgt. Trotter, played by Alec Beiswenger, amid the swirling storm outside. Knowing Jason as a police officer before the performance, it was hilarious to hear his thick Italian-esque accent say, to Sgt. Trotter, “I have

always thought policemen have no sense of humor.” To find out what happens in this classic murder mystery, you will have to read the novel or catch a showing of the play elsewhere. Meanwhile, South City Theatre’s next show is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which runs in December. Auditions are being held as this goes to press, so who knows— Meg, Micheal, Corey, Courtney, Alisha, Alec, Bill or Jason could be back to tackle a new role. “South City Theatre, and its children’s productions, have a great reputation throughout the local theatre community, and I’m glad to have been a

part of that.” Jason said. Donna, who has been involved with the theatre for several years, agreed with him. “To see theatre anywhere else, you have to get dressed up and go all the way downtown. This is a great place to get involved with quality community theatre productions, right here in Pelham.” The Best Christmas Pageant Ever will run December 4, 5, 6, 10 and 12. Commercial Beautification Award—Donohoo Auto This month’s winner for the Commercial Beautification Award is Donohoo Auto, located at 8122 Helena Road. According to Donohoo Media Relations Manager Tyler Robbins, their landscaping has been in place since the company expanded from their first lot to the new location in 2006-2007. “The old lot had a bait shop, a koi pond, the cars, and that was it,” Tyler said. “So when Pete and Chris got the opportunity to expand, they wanted to do it right.” The “new” lot isn’t exactly your typical flat car lot—in all, there are five lots on two tiers on the property, plus the original lot on the other side of The Gaslight House.

“It’s a little tough on foot, but we manage,” Tyler said. “It was Mike Lackey who spearheaded the design of the new building and made all the decisions about landscaping.” Trees and shrubs line the grassy areas between each tier, the front of the building and the front of the property. Bushes with beautiful pink flowers are nestled among the shrubs for a pop of color.

“Making the tiered lots was the only way to make this location work. Our cars are arranged out front to make it easier for our customers to see them,” Tyler said. “Every choice we made was to pass on savings to our customers, including the irrigation system.” He went on, “we wanted to keep it simple, so the customers could see the benefits of our cost-cutting.”

PHS Band truly is Best in Class The 2015 year was one of the most successful years for the Pelham High School Marching Band relative to competition. Most of the components in the band had the highest or second highest scores of all bands at both competitions. On Saturday, September 26, the 125-member Pelham High School Band competed at Spain Park in the annual “Sparks in the Park” Marching Competition in a field of 15 bands. The band presented their 2015 halftime production, From the Earth to the Moon: An American Journey. All components of the band (Band, Percussion, Drum Major, Color Guard, Dance Team, and Majorettes) received Superior Ratings, which is the highest rating possible in competition. Best in Class awards were given to PHS band for Color Guard, Dance Team, Majorettes, and overall Band awards. Quite the achievement!

A month later, on Saturday, October 17, the band competed at the Hoover Marching Invitational at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in a field of 13 bands. Just like at Spain Park, in the Hoover competition all components of the band (Band, Percussion, Drum Major, Color Guard, Dance Team, and Majorettes) received Superior Ratings. The students received Best in Class awards there for their Drum Major, Color Guard, Dance Team, Majorettes, and Percussion. “Our band has excelled in all areas this year as we have been more competitive than ever,” said PHS Band Director Justin Ward. “The hard work of our students, as they put in over 250 hours of preparation, is unparalleled and we couldn’t be prouder of all 125 members.” “Our band would not be what it is if it were not for

the outstanding support of our school administration, Superintendent Dr. Scott Coefield, and the entire Pelham City School Board,” Justin continued. “Their investment in the arts and specifically our program has made a profound difference in the educational experience that our students are fortunate enough to participate in and enjoy!” “Our band students are truly great representatives of their families, our school, and our community,” Justin said, and we cannot help but agree.

“We challenge the students to embody five guiding principles in everything they do: pride, commitment, discipline, excellence, and spirit,” Justin explained. “This year’s band has done that and enjoyed the success that results from being the best you can be in all that you do.” “As our band continues to grow and improve we look forward to continued and expanded success on Friday nights as well as on Saturdays in the competitive arena,” Justin concluded. “This band has set us on the path to do just that!”

Meet Erik Hudson—new Hockey Director

The Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena introduced new Hockey Director Erik Hudson October 1. Fresh from running and owning a marketing company in Chicago, Erik is glad to get back to hockey after several years away from the sport. Before the marketing gig, Erik was the assistant coach at Lake Forest College, a Division III school, for a year. This followed on the heels of his professional hockey career, spent playing for the Fayetteville Fire Antz in North Carolina and the Pensacola Ice Flyers. After graduating from Iowa State, he played for the 2011 US

Men’s National Hockey Team, and was able to travel to Turkey with them and compete against the Turkish National Team. Erik has barely been in the state a month, but he, his wife Amanda (a respiratory therapist), and their dog Bear (a Black Bear Pomeranian) already love it in Pelham. “We really like the area a lot— a lot less hustle and bustle than Chicago,” he said. “There is a lot of good food, good people, and the landscape is just a lot different!” So is the weather, and it’s a change for the better down here, he said. Growing up in Spokane, Washington, Erik and his brother Eddie didn’t jump immediately to hockey. They did play, of course, with pillows duct taped to their legs for protection, but their first passion was following in their father’s footsteps—or rather, his

skid marks. Their dad, Ed Hudson, known as “Fast Eddie,” was a well-known racecar driver in the Northeast, especially Spokane and the surrounding area. So of course his sons took up racing, too, at a very young age. But when Eddie Jr. broke his jaw in a racing accident, at the age of 9, that was the end of that. “Mom said we couldn’t race cars anymore, so I decided I wanted to play hockey,” Erik explained. “I played basically every sport, but I was the best at hockey, and it even took me to Canada while I was in high school.” He attended the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame prep school for hockey in high school. Each summer from then through college, Erik taught goal tending and player development to kids in Vanvouver, and it’s been all about hockey ever since. While in Iowa, Erik said, “I missed hockey, so I started keeping my eye out for opportunities. When this position came open,

and it was doable, I applied right away.” “I’m really grateful Danny Tate called—this is a great opportunity to come into an organization and help build this program into something bigger,” Erik said. “I want to give kids the chances I had, to have fun at the rink, but also learn to play at a higher level if they want.” Skating Director Craig Henderson teaches Hockey 1 and 2, but everything else hockey is Erik—including the Pelham Youth Hockey League and several adult programs started this year. “I am building on programs Randy Murphy started,” he said. The Adult Development League plays every Monday night. The Pelham Adult Hockey Academy, which kicked off in October, also meets on Mondays. Erik plays on the Bash team. The Pelham Hockey Development Academy meets Mondays and Thursdays. For more information, contact Erik Hudson at 256-348-7984 or erik@pelhamonline.com.

Pelham students make a showing at BEST Robotics Competition Riverchase Middle and Pelham High students interested in the fields of robotics and engineering spent several weeks in September and October preparing for the BEST Robotics Competition at UAB. The annual competition draws schools from Greater Birmingham, Jefferson and Shelby Counties and inspires students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through participation in a sportslike, science- and engineeringbased robotics competition. The middle school and high school both fielded teams among competition from 33 area schools. Each team divided into groups to address different competition factors such as design, manufacturing, testing, and demonstrating (through competition) their unique robotic machine. Pelham teams worked

with David Wilkins, a local software developer, who provided his assistance and realworld knowledge during the competition preparations. The teams had a great experience and gained beneficial problemsolving, project management, decision-making, and leadership skills throughout the process. Now that the BEST Robotics Competition is over, the students are gearing up for more competitions, including the VEX Robotics Competition where they will create virtual

Stack’d Burger Kitchen cooking up gourmet burgers on Bowling Lane

Open since June, their “tucked away” location means many have not yet visited Pelham’s newest burger emporium. But that is their loss, and hopefully after reading this burger enthusiast’s review, that will change. The owners say they set out to offer diners something “a cut above the rest.” Stack’d Burger Kitchen’s people start each day grinding their own Certified Black Angus

beef. It’s the most choice beef available, and you will taste the difference from the first bite, intoned one diner. “We cut our own potatoes for fries as well,” added the kitchen manager (both regular and sweet potatoes). Three types of buns are offered: sesame seed, onion, or whole wheat. They taste as if they bake their own bread, too, but in fact, they’re just high quality buns. In addition to offering the certified Black Angus beef, each of the Stack’d signature burgers offer a gourmet touch: their Barbecue Stack’d Burger features homemade barbecue sauce and hand battered “onion strings” with a spring mix blend of lettuce and fresh, ripe garden

tomatoes. The Blue Cheese Stack’d Burger features real, crumbled blue cheese, (not a salad dressing like most places offer), aioli sauce, prosciutto and sautéed onions. Hungry for breakfast? Try a Stack’d Breakfast Burger with sausage patty, fried egg, those fresh fried onion strings and a blend of spring mix lettuce. There are several more burgers on the menu, and also a sweet blend of other options for the one in the crowd who wants something different. Choices here range from several different hot dogs to quesadillas (steak or chicken), BLTs, a terrific made from scratch daily chicken salad, two signature Stack’d Chicken sandwiches along with a Philly Cheese steak like you’d expect from an Italian’s kitchen and the best Shrimp Po Boy you’re likely to eat north of the beach. Two salads round out the

menu and a kid’s menu is available with smaller portions and simplified versions of several menu items at a kid’s menu price. Wait, did I tell you they have milk shakes? What good is a burger without a milk shake? Grandpa Smith used to ask, and Stack’d offers up six flavors, so there’s something to suit everybody’s sweet tooth, from the traditional three (vanilla, chocolate and strawberry) to taste sensations like Peach, Caramel and Peanut Butter. Presently, Stack’d is only open for lunch from 11-2:30, but plans are to start opening 5-9pm for dinner in December (later on Friday and Saturday nights). Come and eat lunch now at Stack’d Burger Kitchen in Pelham, located between Game Zone Laser Tag Center and Shear Savvy Salon on Bowling Lane in Pelham.

Pelham Police K9 Unit hosts AL Police and Military K-9 Conference Sixty-five military and police K-9 units from around the Southeast traveled to Pelham October 13-14 to take part in the Alabama Police and Military K-9 Conference at the Pelham Civic Complex. The event was very successful this year, with a much larger turnout than last year’s conference. According to Police Chief Larry Palmer, Sgt. Steve Johnson is in charge of the K-9 Unit and was instrumental in bringing the conference to Pelham. “Everybody was positive about the experience,” said Sgt. Johnson.

40 PelhamOnline.com / Holiday 2015

“They enjoyed the conference and got a lot out of it.” Events focused on aspects of tracking, scent detection and patrol. Some sessions, as seen in the pictures, were hands-on for the handlers and dogs, and others were set in a classroom to help develop new techniques. According to Sgt. Johnson, one of the more popular training sessions was held on the ice rink, which allowed the dogs to “get their feet wet” with new experiences and build new skills. The helicopter simulation was another popular one. Patrol dogs

and handlers were transported to Oak Mountain State Park in a helicopter, where the dogs were deployed upon arrival to take down a target. Scent behavior and tracking sessions, where dogs had to identify boxes with narcotics or explosive scents, were also very important. “Everyone really liked the conference. They liked the concepts, and it was really well received,” Sgt. Johnson said. “We’ve already set next year’s conference date. When this one finishes we will start on the next one. It’s a never-

ending thing.” “I am very proud of our officers and their K-9 partners here at Pelham,” Chief Palmer said. He went on to say the department will acquire a new K-9 this year, who will serve in drug detection and tracking divisions.

Cake Art bakery brings beautiful, delicious, whimsical cakes to Pelham A delicious new bakery called Cake Art opened last month across from Walmart on Pelham Parkway. Owner and head pastry chef Cynthia Bertolone says she looks forward to serving Pelham’s holiday dessert baking needs this holiday season. With Thanksgiving fast approaching, it’s nice to know that there’s a bakery here serving up cakes and cookies just like grandma used to make! In addition to holiday baking,

though, Cynthia says her theme cakes are becoming increasingly popular for everything from children’s birthdays to retirement parties. She recently did a groom’s cake where the guy asked her if she could make a cake to look like his beloved dog. It was such a hit that people who saw the pictures began to fill her request bucket. Perhaps “cakes for all occasions” would be a good sub

head for her sign outside, as she provides cakes and desserts for all kinds of events. Team parties, corporate events, and well, you name it, Cynthia has probably baked cakes that were perfect for the occasion. Cake Art provides for small gatherings as well as the largest corporate events. Wherever there’s a sweet tooth, it can be perfectly satisfied by Cynthia’s delicious confections. Cynthia was formerly the pas-

try chef for Joe’s Italian. Known for their desserts, she now joins her husband, Chef Michael, in the new venture. They invite you to come in soon and to remember them for all your dessert baking needs this Thanksgiving and Christmas season. And remember, “Put a smile on someone’s face, take home a Strawberry Cake!”

...a cake to look like his beloved dog.

Residential Beautification Award 281 Grey Oaks Drive Chaudron and Tiffany Horn were used to cars slowly driving past their house at 281 Grey Oaks Drive in October, especially at night. The drivers were merely trying to get a better look at Chaudron’s fantastic homemade Halloween decorations that fill the yard and adorn the house. Tiffany, a graduate of PHS, has lived in Pelham since she was 15, while Chaudron made the move to Pelham after the pair began dating in 1999. The Horns have been married nine years and have two children, 8-year-old Will and 5-year-old Tela, the latter of whom helps Chaudron decorate every year. “Tela is my little helper out in the yard and with decorations,” Chaudron said. “She helped me build the fence around the graveyard and even the treehouse in the backyard.” Projected on the side of that treehouse was the silhouette of Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. His face also graced an upstairs front window, while villain Oogey Boogey lurked in the window above the garage. A graveyard with several interesting characters took over the front lawn. Among the headstones were a green alien boy, a tiny shiny toddler ghost, a glowing hand reaching from beyond the grave and a spiderlike skeleton bursting out of

headstone rubble. The addition of brightly colored and contrasting lights throughout the entire display this year added an extra dimension to each scene that mades Chaudron’s decorations stand out from the crowd. “Asking which decoration is my favorite is like asking which of your kids is your favorite,” Chaudron laughed. “Usually, my favorite is whichever one I just finished building.” This year, that includes a broken stone coffin and the impressive dungeon doors that lead into the house—the designs for both of which he came up with completely on his own. He is also proud of the giant reaper watching passers-by from the front porch he made last year. The family does visit Halloween stores each year, but usually only for inspiration. “I take more pride in using the decorations I make, because I made them,” Chaudron said. “Made decorations look more real to me, and they aren’t cheap like store decorations, so they will last a long time.” For example, he made the guillotine on display more than eight years ago, and has used it every year. “I tend to go overboard when it comes to yardwork and Halloween decorations,” Chaudron said, and Tiffany just nodded her head and laughed. “I do all the inside cleaning and decorating and leave everything

outside to him,” she explained. “He loves it.” This love of gardening started early for Chaudron. “As a kid, my parents didn’t do yardwork, so I started doing it,” he said. “I worked on projects with my aunt. My grandmother and granddad took me on trips to pick wild day lilies when I was 12, and they are still my favorite flower.” Chaudron’s grandmother’s friends often call him for help with overgrown flower beds and he offers them a deal: he will clean their yard if he can take half of the flowers. Nearly all the plants in the yard are from these harvests, or given to Chaudron by his aunt or Tiffany’s mother. “I spend every minute not dealing with my kids out in the yard—I love it,” he said. He also likes projects to stay busy. “I’m always building Halloween decorations or working in the yard so I don’t go crazy.” Indeed, at the first sign of

spring, Chaudron is up at 5:30 each morning drinking coffee and waiting to work in the yard. In the summer, he can be found pulling rocks out of the Warrior River to line his flower beds or edge the front walk. Until it gets too cold, he is always outside working on something. In late autumn, he visits friends who run haunted houses and takes any props off their hands they no longer want. And in the winter, with no yard work to do, he holes up in the garage working on more props for the next year’s Halloween. With Chaudron’s love for yard work and his flair for presentation, their yard is a wonderful sight to see all year. Congratulations to the Horn family!
