From the Mayor’s Desk I want to start off by saying thank you to everyone in our city that came out to lend a hand in the cleanup after the tornado rolled through our community on March 27. In the hours and days that followed, you stepped up to the plate to help in the cleanup efforts, and THAT is part of what makes our city great. The character of Helena is built on that type of volunteer effort. As storm debris cleanup was still underway, we did not skip a beat, as evidenced by the first Helena Live event that took place in the park one week after the massive cleanup. Thanks to all individuals and groups who donated to the relief effort. A special thanks to new Helena Kiwanis President Alice Brown and Gene and Camille Maier for making a generous donation on behalf of our local Kiwanis chapter. There has been far too much going on around town since our last edition to put it all into one letter, but I will attempt to list some of the highlights here and inform you of some upcoming events that you will surely want to put on your calendar. We welcomed lots of new businesses to town over the past couple of months, and I’d like to give a hearty Helena welcome to them all! New Chick-fil-A owner Brad Nichols, his family and staff, bring

a very popular menu to town. No longer will residents need to drive to a neighboring city to get their Chick-fil-A fix! Other businesses opened recently here include Hanna Stiltner’s Soul Story Therapy and her staff of counselors located next to Beef O’Brady’s, Paul and Cristy Hughes with Hughes Jewelers near Publix, Ryan Taylor, pharmacist with Helena Drugs next to Mr. Lin and San Antonio Grill, Krystle Herron and Studio Chic, a salon in Dearing Downs Commerce Center on CR95, Catherine Whidby and Salon Monarch in the little white building on Main Street in Old Town, a new AT&T store, and a new nail center, GJ’s Nails. There may be some I am leaving out, but it is not by design. As the Mayor of Helena, it is my pleasure to welcome all our new businesses to town and ensure that all of our existing businesses stay successful! I get more and more inquiries each week from business owners or their representatives wanting to know more about Helena as our population grows and we become an increasingly attractive market for them. The Easter egg hunt was another fun day in town at Joe Tucker Park for our children as you could see smiling faces all around. Thanks to Dr. Priscila Denny of Oak Mountain Orthodontics for providing Easter Baskets to give as prizes. Dr. Denny is always sponsoring local events geared towards our children

and schools and her support is much appreciated. One of the best things that happened over the last few weeks is I had the great pleasure to kick off the new TAG Team (Teachers Assistant Grant) program where I was able to award $60,000 to teachers that applied for the grant. This new program gets money directly into the teacher’s hands to enhance the educational experience that make our schools in Helena the best. Additionally, we gave each principal $25,000 to spend at their discretion. All together, we disbursed a total of $160,000 with funds that directly impact our schools in the best way. Lots of students have been awarded academic and sports scholarships over the past month, and I would like to be one of the first to offer my congratulations to them and offer my best wishes to the Helena Husky Class of 2021 as they move on from high school. I hope they all remember Helena fondly and after college or whatever career training they pursue, they consider coming back to Helena to begin their lives as young adults. Helena Beautiful (our beautification board) was busy with our annual Spring Clean Up Day in March and recently hung lots of new flower baskets in the Old Town area. My thanks to Councilman Chris VanCleave and his volunteers for all their hard work! Be watching out for info from

the HOT Board (Helena Old Town Board) concerning Helena Live events. These are helping kick off the new Entertainment District in Old Town. They plan to have an event one Saturday each month with live music in Amphitheater Park staring about 1pm and lasting until about 9pm. Our local Farmer’s Market is gearing up and has announced that the first market this year will take place Saturday, June 5, with Chef Cliff Holt, from 8am until Noon. The Farmer’s Market will continue each Saturday throughout the summer and are great family events for getting your fresh goods. The Market is always looking for volunteers to continue the tradition. If you are interested in helping, please send an email to skullgirlsoaps@yahoo.com. Some of the spring sports teams are still competing as of press time; best of luck to them as we look forward to graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021 and summer in Helena! Finally, thank you for all that you do to help make Helena a great place to live, work and play! Helena is truly “A Community to Call Home.”

Together As One,

Brian

Helena Spring Clean Up Day a huge success! Helena’ Spring Clean Up Day on March 13 was a great success! It wouldn’t have gone smoothly without new board Chairperson, Kim Edwards, and her team, who spent hours planning to make the day a success. The Helena Beautification Board would like to thank all its volunteers on their tremendous efforts to make Helena a beautiful place to live, work and shop. There was representation from the HOT Board, Helena Belles, Miracle League, our mayor and city council members and so many others who just wanted to be a part of this effort. Volunteers worked on clearing flower beds, trimming bushes, preparing flower pots and much more. We look forward to future clean up days to keep Helena looking beautiful! #helenabeautiful

Meet ALICE BROWN

Helena Kiwanis Club President

Alice Brown, this year’s Helena Kiwanis Club President, sat down recently at Beef O’Brady’s for a bite of lunch and to introduce herself. Alice has lived next door in Pelham since 2016. She was born in Texas but grew up and spent most of her life in Chicago, Illinois. She attended The University of Illinois where she majored in psychology. After college, she worked at the local telephone company in customer service for 25 years and

also served as assistant pastor at First Baptist Chicago. She decided to move in with her daughter in Pelham after she retired. Alice is an ordained minister and still contributes her time virtually to her home church back in Chicago. Once a month, she preaches a sermon to not only that congregation, but to others watching her over Zoom. Since Alice is an American Baptist, she found that her closest church to attend here is located in Montgomery. That was a bit far to commute, so Alice says she found her place at Kingwood Church in Alabaster. Alice has one daughter, Angela, who works for Amazon as an area supervisor. And she has a granddaughter, Hope, 12, who attends Pelham Park Middle School. Back in 2013, Alice lost her husband of

21 years, the late Reverend Alex Brown. He was also an assistant pastor, and at the same church as Alice in Chicago. “He was my partner in crime, my fishing buddy,” said Alice. They led ministries together there which served those in prison, operated a food bank, and one which supplied clothing to those in need. After moving here in 2016, Alice joined a small group at Kingwood and instantly got connected with the Helena Kiwanis Club. The Kiwanis Club participates in and hosts local events each year. Their big event is the Pancake Breakfast at the intermediate school. They also work the SEC Tournament handing out programs each year. Due to the pandemic, the club has had to delay some events this year. Alice was elected Helena Kiwanis Club President in 2020 after shadowing Claudia Deason for a year to learn the ropes. The

president has many duties including membership, developing a new Facebook page and maintaining a safe Boundless Playground at Joe Tucker Park. The Kiwanis Club meets the 1st Tuesday of every month over Zoom at 7:45AM. When talking with Alice, she mentioned the things that she loves about Helena: our big sense of community (everyone is there to help when needed); the variety of things to do here; the fact that Helena is very family oriented; and the fact that it’s easier to find things around town as compared to Chicago. When you run into Alice around town, be sure to say hello, and if you are looking for a way to plug into a group in Helena that joins together for the common good, consider joining the Helena Kiwanis Club. Check them out @ kiwanisclubhelenaal on Facebook. A warm Helena welcome to Kiwanis President, Alice Brown!

Chick-fil-A opens to rounds of applause in Helena! A new Chick-fil-A is open for business in Helena. Brad Nichols is the independent franchised Owner/Operator of Chick-fil-A Helena. He will be responsible for all day-to-day activities of the business, including employing approximately 90 full- and part-time team members, cultivating relationships with local organizations and neighboring businesses, and serving guests. Chick-fil-A Helena is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Chick-fil-A Helena surprised 100 local heroes making an impact in Helena with

free Chick-fil-A for a year. Additionally, in honor of the new restaurant opening, Chick-fil-A donated $25,000 to Feeding America. These funds will be distributed to partners within the greater Birmingham area to aid in the fight against hunger. A Birmingham native, Brad was first introduced to Chick-fil-A at eight-yearsold when his father became the franchised Operator for Chick-fil-A Century Plaza Mall and Chick-fil-A Eastwood Mall. Inspired by his father’s experience caring for guests and mentoring his team members, Brad began working for Chick-fil-A Trussville in high school. After graduation, he accepted a management

role at 1-800-Got-Junk, a franchised junk removal company. Nichols said he gained valuable leadership skills and business acumen while serving the Helena/Pelham/ Alabaster areas. He then transitioned back to working for Chick-fil-A Trussville near the end of college while earning his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Samford University. In 2012, Nichols was selected to become the Operator of Chick-fil-A Esplanade Mall in Kenner, La. and then went on to become the Operator of Chick-fil-A Chambers Town Center in Baytown, Tex. After serving those communities for nearly 10 years, he is excited to be back home to build new relation-

ships with team members and guests as the Operator of Chick-fil-A Helena. Brad and his wife Holly met in high school at Briarwood Christian and currently live in the greater Birmingham area with their two children, Walker and Taylor. He enjoys golfing, fishing, traveling and spending quality time with his family in his free time. “My family and I are excited to return to our hometown and serve our community with the opening of Chick-fil-A Helena,” said Brad. “Chick-fil-A played an integral role in shaping me into the person I am today, and I look forward to extending that same positive impact to the Helena community and creating a welcoming environment for our team members and guests.” We’d like to add a hearty “Welcome to Helena!” to Brad and all his team members. We are glad to have you as the newest member of our business community.

Helena residents Allen B. Morgan & Jared Hill

Putting their stamp on country music from their Helena homes Songwriter Allen B. Morgan lives off Hwy 13 in unincorporated Shelby County. He was disabled in the line of duty as a Homewood police officer in 2012, and says he was searching for something to make him feel productive. “I’ve been a music lover and a musician for many years, so I decided I’d give songwriting a go around May of last year,” said Allen. “An artist from Clanton got hold of some of my music and passed it along to some music producers in Kentucky and Nashville, and both were interested. After I talked with producer John W. Stritenberger of JWS Songs in Louisville, Kentucky, we immediately bonded. John told me of an up and coming artist from Alabama named Jared Hill. John said he had sent some of my lyrics to him, and that they were well received. With John and Jared’s new interest in producing some of my songs, I was looking to celebrate and take my girlfriend out for an evening of celebration. John told me that Jared had a show coming up in Alabama the next day. I asked where he was playing in Alabama, because if it was close enough, I’d go catch his show and meet him. John

looked on Jared’s Facebook page and said, “Looks like he’ll be at Beef O’ Brady’s in ‘Hellenuh’ Alabama. I laughed and said, “Helena? John, that’s where I live! So Friday night I’m at Beef O’ Brady’s meeting Jared Hill, who is currently well into the interview process for being on the next season of The Voice. Turns out Jared lives in Old Cahaba and our back porches are a mile away ‘as the crow flies’ through the woods.” “The very next day I was having lunch with another producer, Roy Henderson, CEO of RKS Studios in Kevil, Kentucky, as he passed through on his way back from a trip to Florida. The following Monday, Roy had already produced the first song I had written, ‘Pillow full of prayers,’ and I had been invited by John Stritenberger to perform an original at the legendary Commodore in Nashville. My world got shot out of a cannon over the period of a week, and I was passing milestones in the music industry that many chase for years, without success in many cases.” “Jared and I became like brothers and these days, spend much of our free time together writing music and dining at local Helena restaurants. I carried over a long

10 Late Spring 2021 / www.CityOfHelena.org

time love from law enforcement of Waffle House. I’m a regular at the Helena Waffle House and was working a crossword puzzle one day while enjoying my meal. Something in the crossword sparked an idea for a song and I immediately flipped the crossword over and began penning my thoughts. The song was cobbled together in about 20 minutes, and I had a really good feeling about this one. I messaged Jared, and told him I had just written a hit and asked what he was doing. He said ‘nothing’ ßand told me to come on over. We sat down and began putting music to the words and making some adjustments. By the end of the afternoon we had a piece of music we really felt had potential. We sat on it for a couple of months and our mutual friend John Stritenberger had forged a new relationship with AOK Records in Nashville. AOK Records has been around for 22 years and has over 100 charting hits. AOK Records

is currently producing four of my pieces including ‘Here to stay’ written at our local Waffle House. As of today (four days after release) according to Adam Knight of AOK Records, Here to Stay is currently playing on 225 radio stations around the U.S. and has been reviewed by industry VIPs at Mercury Records and Showdog. It will ultimately be presented to over 4000 radio stations including Billboard, Music Row, TX radio charts, Sirius/XM and more. Maybe one day soon, the song written at the Helena Waffle House will end up on the jukebox there,” finished Allen. Congratulations to Helena’s own budding country music writer Allen B. Morgan and singer, Jared Hill, and best wishes for your continued success!

Helena Intermediate School welcomes new principal “I’ll never be a teacher,” declared Sasha Baker once upon a time. That was before she did indeed become a teacher and then pursued work in education administration. Sasha Baker assumed the role of principal at Helena Intermediate School after the previous principal, Kathy Paiml, took an early retirement this past December. After working in the environmental field post-college, Sasha discovered that her true passion was in learning and in making a difference in other people’s lives. That realization (and finally backtracking on her promise to never become a teacher) led her to pursue education by earning a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Alabama A&M University and a second Master’s in Instructional Leadership from the University of Montevallo, as well as an Education Specialist degree. Soon she learned that her heart belonged to the younger students.

Sasha Baker

“Initially, I thought I would be a high school science teacher, but once I did some observations, I fell in love with the little kids and their excitement and watching the lightbulbs turn on when they learned something new. I wanted to do that every day and invest in young people like that.” This newfound teaching career eventually carried Sasha into school administration. “As far as how I ended up in administration, it wasn’t a goal, but it was something that I just naturally found myself doing. I think I naturally found myself advocating and standing up and wanting to figure out different ways of doing things, which led me to administration. I’ve been here now for the last eight or nine years doing leadership/administrative work.” When it comes to the things she finds most rewarding, it’s the personal moments of growth within her students that keeps her

motivated. “It’s the small things that really get me excited. It’s seeing a child that was really struggling with a concept and watching them grow, like letter recognition, but now they’re able to sound out words. It’s a thrilling moment when you realize a child can read because of interventions that were put in place. I’m not even doing those interventions directly anymore, but I still get excited when I see student growth—when you see students try new things or take risks.” Sasha Baker is thankful to be serving the community of Helena above all. “I felt like this community just scooped me up and took me in, and I felt like I belonged to something. I felt like I had a place. I have a lot of established relationships with the teachers and faculty here, as well as the families and students, but there’s just something about this place that makes me feel like I fit in. What I know is I’m going to give people my very best.”

She added that the sense of community in Helena at large is what she tries to emulate in the intermediate school by building strong bonds between the faculty, parents, and students, as well as welcoming the community into their school and being a facility for holding community events. “I’m hoping that next year brings us a time where we can invite folks back into our building. I know so many of our parents feel like they’re on the outside looking in, so I hope that next fall allows us to build a stronger sense of community, more openness with our community as a school facility, and a sense of belonging for other people.” Sasha is married to her husband Robert, and they have two little girls who are four and three. They are residents of Helena and are proud to call our city home. Please join us in giving a salute to Sasha Baker as our principal at Helena Intermediate School.

First “Old Town Live” sign of what’s to come! Sure, the crowds were less than most hoped for on the first “Old Town Live” event, being as how it was Easter weekend, Egg Hunt day and Senior Day for Husky baseball at the high school. Even though cooler temperatures ruled the day, but those who attended the first “Old Town Live” say they had a blast eating crawfish from Bywater, terrific gumbo from Refined to go and drinking the area’s best craft beers from Oversoul Brewing, and they can’t wait for the next one. To these experienced eyes which have seen simple ideas blossom from what were also once fledgling events, like the rubber duck race, Saturday was just a preview of

great times to come as the Helena Entertainment District takes root and grows. Hats off to the Old Town merchants, The HOT Board, and all the groups working to make Old Town Helena all that it can be. Stay tuned for upcoming events in the Helena Entertainment District to be announced soon!

Ruck 22 march Rucksacks were carried and the path was laid! The 1st annual Ruck 22 march took place on Helena’s Hillsboro Trail. The march was 4.2 miles long and its purpose was to honor the 22 veterans who commit suicide daily and also to be a support for those currently struggling. “We just started our outreach program, and we thought this would be a great way to get the program rolling here,” said Officer Jeff Murphy. Local residents who had lost loved ones, soldiers, police officers and many were just there to show support joined in. Officer Kristopher Cooper and Sergeant Marquese Jackson with the Helena Police Depart-

ment brought this event to Helena. It was a privilege to hear from Major General George Bowman, (retired) US Army. Many speakers followed such as police chief Brad Flynn and city councillor Leigh Hulsey. Kristopher Cooper is a former member of the Army Reserves and Sgt. Jackson is a former Marine. The event was hosted by the Helena Police Department and Priority Soldier, a non-profit that helps veterans transition into civilian life. The 1st annual Ruck 22 raised over $3,500 for charities for veterans! Way to go Helena! To see more pictures, visit our Helena City News Facebook page.

Two Huskies to help start LBW volleyball program

A signing ceremony was held in April for two Helena volleyball players as they committed to Lurleen B Wallace Community College’s new volleyball program. Family, friends, past coaches, and well wishers gathered in the Helena fieldhouse to recognize their accomplishments and help them celebrate. Helena High School Head Volleyball Coach Amanda Lewis said, “Brianna Wilson and Madison Rasmussen both signed to play volleyball at the next level, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. They will become a part of the new volleyball program at LBW coached by Janie Wiggins, former Enterprise High coach. “I am so proud of these girls and their perseverance throughout their high school careers. They both exemplify leadership, accountability, and responsibility both on and off the court. I can’t think of a better duo to begin a program with. They will provide a solid foundation for the new LBW volleyball team.” Strong words of praise from the head lady herself. Hats off and best wishes for a bright college career go out to Brianna and Maddie!

Soul Story Therapy hangs out its shingle in a suite next to Beef O’Brady’s Helping bring clarity to your story is new mental health practice owner, Hanna Stiltner of Soul Story Therapy. Hanna is originally from Tazewell, Va. She has her MSW, and is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, with her PIP certification. She has worked in the mental health field for over 10 years. Growing up, Hanna says she naturally connected with others by trying to always be there for them, and in retrospect, she now recognizes that she was very much the people pleaser and felt as though she needed to be everything for everybody or she didn’t feel as though they would stick around. Although she was seemingly the happy, outgoing girl, her inner struggles were filled with anxiety, low self esteem, low self worth and insecurities. Prior to doing her own self work and healing her own inner world, these made her journey a little more difficult, yet she says the difficult times were filled with blessings, too. After high school, Hanna attended Radford University, where she earned a degree in Recreation Management. Her internship consisted of planning 5Ks and events for a nursing home, she said. It was during this time that her first child, Landon, was born. (He is now 16 and a student at Helena High School.) After graduation, Hanna got a job at a boy’s group home that was home to troubled 13-17 year olds. She says this was her first real experience working in mental health. “I truly didn’t pick this profession, it picked me,” said Hannah. She later became a case manager at a community service board which led her to in-house therapy. She found that she had a knack for helping people improve their mental health, and saw that her logical next move was to take the steps necessary to earn her masters in social work from Radford. People go to check ups with physicians to take care of their physical health, and Hanna says it is just as important for people to recognize that the mind is a powerful tool that needs care, too. Our mental wellness is tied

directly to our overall health and well being. “It is amazing how helpful it can be to have someone listen with a nonjudgmental, objective perspective to help them gain an overall better understanding of themselves in order to create a more peaceful inner world,” she said. “Emotional wellness is a huge factor in success in so many aspects of life. Top athletes, actors, politicians and successful business leaders often embrace the help of mental health professionals in order to take care of their inner selves and to stay at the top of their game. Here at Soul Story, we believe in treating the whole person— mind, body and spirit.” In 2009, Hanna married her husband, Nick. At that time, she also gained a son. (Cameron, now 17, is also a Helena High student.) As a family, they first moved to Morgantown, West Virginia. Hanna worked at a private practice called Mountaineer Psychology. Throughout her career, Hanna has worked in a variety of clinical settings which offered her the opportunity to experience a multitude of mental health issues with people from all walks of life. Hanna has worked in community mental health, inpatient treatment/detox facilities, schools, nursing homes and more. “Social work is a diverse field, and I see it as an honor to have the opportunity to assist others who are perhaps in their most vulnerable state and have them trust me to help them. To me, there is no greater feeling than seeing someone dive into their own inner world and use their strength and innate ability to persevere through hardship.” Hanna says that while she loved living in West Virginia, she was ready to find somewhere that felt more like home. Nick had gotten a job offer in Alabama, and so the Stiltner family packed their bags and moved to a little town called Helena. “Helena just felt like home, and we were happy to get settled into this sweet town for the long haul,” said Hanna. Once her family was settled in Alabama, Hanna went through the licens-

ing process and then started working in private practice as well as long-term care facilities. She shares that she has always had a vision for her own practice, but was patient with the process, as timing was key. “There was a period of time where my family faced some of our own personal struggles after moving to Helena. I wouldn’t have said it then, but now I truly am so grateful for that time period. I believe our toughest moments are our greatest teachers, and I am forever grateful for the growth that we gained from that time. It has been very much an inspiration for Soul Story, and symbolizes what I wanted to represent in my practice. We are very thankful for our story,” said Hanna. Since those struggles, Nick has started his own company, Humility Enterprise Painting and Renovation Services. Hanna says that her husband chose the company name because he believes that humility is one of the strongest attributes an individual or business owner can have, and he wants to be reminded of the growth that comes from humbling experiences. Humility Enterprise specializes in full scale residential and commercial renovations, interior and exterior painting and property maintenance/repairs.

Meanwhile, Hanna continued to grow her vision of what Soul Story represented and the vibe that she wanted to create and offer for her therapy practice. “It was important to me to offer an environment that is comfortable, nonjudgmental, and welcoming in the hopes to have others see that nurturing your mind is a form of self care. We try to hide our weaknesses instead of understanding who we are and embracing what makes us uniquely special.” Soul Story Therapy now has a full team in place. Besides Hanna, there is: Tara Bradley, LICSW; Lauren Martinez, LMSW and Supervisee in training; and Alicia Romano, office administrator. Whitney Gay, LICSW, will also be joining the team in July. “We are ready to help you start your own journey of self-discovery and inner healing,” finished Hanna. If you or someone you love is in need of a non-judgmental ear and opinion from an experienced therapist, and to learn of the many ways in which they might help, Hanna wants everyone to know that she is as close as your telephone. She urges you to schedule an appointment for a free consultation today!

Helena Middle School softball holds ceremony to celebrate Coach Mark Sanders’

450th

Before the HMS Huskies’ game March 9th, Head Coach Mark Sanders and his assistant, Bruce Howland and their families were invited to come onto the field for a very special presentation. The announcer then began reading off a litany of these coaches’ accomplishments: “Helena Middle School Softball has been blessed to have two of the best coaches since its inception in 2009. These men have both been teachers and softball coaches for the past 10 years at HMS. I wanted to share an incredible Helena Middle softball stat with you. Starting with the class that are now seniors at HHS

through last weekend games, the HMS Softball Program is 152-5 over the past 5 seasons. That’s a 97 percent winning percentage over that 5-year period, and says a lot about these two coaches and the program that they have built. When I asked the girls, both present and past players to tell me how you would describe coach Howland and coach Sanders, here are some of the responses I got: ‘Caring, funny, winner, silly, hard working, dedicated, selfless, men of God, more than coaches, awesome, the best, determined, genuine and loving.’ These 2 men have given so much to this program and to these players. They give of their time and their own personal resources

selflessly and only have the well being of their players at heart. They are truly making a difference in the girls’ lives and they are also making a difference in this community. We are blessed to have them.” Coach Bobby Cumming, Athletic Director for the middle school and Principal Andrew Gunn came onto the field to present a few special gifts to the coaches. The announcer went on, “For Coach Sanders, we have two special awards. One is for 450 wins as a softball coach and the other is for 300 wins as the coach of HMS. These are incredible accomplishments. We also have two awards for Coach Howland. One is for 10 years of coaching at HMS and the other is for the 300 wins he helped earn for HMS

softball. Now we have one last treat for the team. Would all the girls quickly come line up on first base line. We have a little something for them for being the team that earned 300th win.” The girls were each presented with medals. The announcer finished, “On behalf of the community, players both past and present, and parents, we thank you coaches and all those that make this program the BEST! We’d like to echo these accompishments and acknowledge them here. Many thanks to these two outstanding men. Softball players who come through our middle school are very fortunate to be able to play for two of the very best to coach the game!

Alfa Insurance Opening its doors in Helena, by Resident Agent Tragg Tew ALFA agent Tragg Tew grew up in Pelham. He met his wife, the former Marci Frederick, at the age of 15, and her family lived in Helena. “Marci and I married In 1998, and we moved to Helena to start our own family. We have two children, Reese and Ella, both of whom go to Helena schools.” The family calls Riverwoods home these days. “Helena is our home, and we truly love the community,” said Tragg. “Growing up, I really enjoyed playing golf. I was pretty good, too. In fact, my career prior to becoming an insurance agent was as a golf professional. I found I loved the insurance business, though. I love servicing clients and helping them with all their insurance needs. Writing a check to help a client rebuild their most valuable assets after they are damaged or destroyed brings about a real satisfaction.” “I have been an Alfa agent for 15

years, and in the insurance industry for 18 years. I have been offered multiple opportunities with other carriers, but no other company takes care of their policy holders the way ALFA does,” said Tragg. “That is the reason I have stayed with the company, and I will retire with ALFA when that time comes. Besides ALFA’s focus on agents becoming THE local hometown agent and insurance service, we offer clients exceptional claims service and pride ourselves on being there when our clients need us the most.” “There is a definite difference in the insurance ALFA offers. First, I tell every shopper for auto or home insurance to call any local auto body shop and any local fire and water restoration company, and ask them how ALFA’s coverage differs from the others. It’s night and day. Plus, we offer some of the best teenage driver rates out there. We also have a built-in Home Warranty

System Protection that is in our home policies that can replace or fix items like air conditioning units or refrigerators and a number of other household appliances. Many other carriers simply DO NOT OFFER this in their policies. “I am pleased to announce that I will be opening an ALFA office in Helena in mid-May! ALFA will open its first office in the heart of Helena next to Chick-Fil-A, between Domino’s Pizza and StoneCreek Dental Care in the CVS

Shopping Center. I look forward to meeting YOUR insurance needs!

Pastor Highlight: Church at Cahaba Bend’s Patrick Friday

Patrick Friday is the pastor at Church at Cahaba Bend. Still fairly new in his position here, Covid brought unique challenges to churches everywhere, and it is no different here where Patrick’s wife, Hannah, and son, Sam, both contracted the virus early on in July and Hannah is still dealing with its sometimes long term

effects. Sam is a twin to brother, Clint. I first remember meeting Patrick about 25 years ago when he spoke to the congregation at Helena United Methodist Church as a missionary to the people of the former Soviet Union. His is an interesting story, and to appreciate it properly, we should start from the start.

Patrick was born to the late Methodist Pastor of 65 years Belon and his wife, Ann Barr Friday in Alexander City. Moving around a lot as a child, Pastor Friday landed at Highlands United Methodist on Southside during Patrick’s teen years, and he stayed in town to attend Birmingham-Southern College where he graduated with a major in Political Science and a minor in Voice. “I sang baritone and sang a lot of opera at the time,” he said. He also sang in the choir there. Patrick said he always enjoyed the Methodists’ camp ministry at Camp Sumatanga as a youth, and longtime mentor and church leader, Nina Reeves took Patrick and other interested youth on a tour of China, Russia, New York and Washington D.C. providing an opportunity to see the church in mission around the world. “We met the persecuted Christians in the Soviet Union, and this is where I experienced the call to do much of what I would do in the years to come,” he said. “God opened the door for me to work in the former Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania as a young man. I was working in Riga, Latvia, in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed. At first, I was a curiosity, an American behind the Iron Curtain, but they took me in and fed me, cared for

me when I was sick, and I always tried to return that in whatever way I could,” he continued. “I was asked to teach an English as a second language course in a small town nearby, and arriving there on the first day, I observed a long line going into the building, and as it turned out, the whole town had turned out for me to teach them English! The paying work I did there was as a sort of freelance journalist working for Birmingham’s Channel 6 and Alabama APT to report on life in the Baltic States (which were formerly a part of the Soviet Union). I went on to work for international news organizations such as Reuters and later, Estonian State Television as a writer/producer. Then I began to work for a group called Education for Democracy based in Mobile, Alabama which was expanding their operations from Czechoslovakia to the East. After the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union, I was named the coordinator for the Baltics including Russia. I worked in this capacity for a little over three years, working with governments there and ministering to the persecuted Christians who were just beginning to experience the freedom to worship as they chose to,” said Patrick. He would go on to become project director to build the Baltic Mission

Rev. Patrick Friday has led a wandering path on his way to his current position as Pastor of the Church at Cahaba Bend here in Helena. From representing a Baltic nation to the Pope at the Vatican to directing the construction of the Baltic region’s first seminary, the Baltic Mission Center, while in his 20s and serving as a missionary to those who suddently found religious freedom after the Iron Curtain fell with the break up of the U.S.S.R. Since arriving in Helena, he has engaged in several

Center in Estonia, which functioned as the area’s largest seminary to train pastors in that part of the world. This project was funded with a one million dollar donation from the Koreans who had become supporters and a couple of million dollars from stateside supporters. As director, Patrick was asked by Estonian government leaders to be their representative to meet with the Pope at the Vatican in Rome which was followed by a second meeting back in Estonia the following year. “The previous Communist regime had been persecuting Christians there since WWII,” said Patrick, who served about five years in the Baltics. It was around this time that Patrick felt called to the ministry, and came back to the U.S. to attend Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. While there, North Alabama Bishop Robert Fannin asked Patrick to coordinate efforts on behalf of The North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church to help the people of Belarus, an impoverished former state of the Soviet Union whose children had borne the brunt of the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown in neighboring Ukraine. “It had been a cold winter, and a call went out to solicit donations of coats for the people there. I was in charge of distribut-

ing 15,000 coats along with our local partners to grateful people in need there. We worked in Belarus with a Chernobyl relief organization led by Gennady Grushevoy. He helped us locate the most needy children and their families. From 1998-2004, we asked families all over North Alabama to serve as host families for over 250 Belarusian children flown over from the affected areas to obtain much needed medical checkups at UAB and dental care from local dentists who volunteered their services. A byproduct of this program was to expose youth from a culture that taught that America was evil that this was not true; to show these children how great freedom could truly be. It is not surprising that many who are protesting for their freedom today are some of the same youth that first came to America as children of Chernobyl. It was here that they saw grocery stores the likes of which they had never seen and experienced the deep faith and generous love of American families who took care of them while they were here,” said Patrick. Back to the seminary days at Candler. It was here that Patrick met his wife, Hannah Little, who was there working on her PhD in Theology. “This was when the sparks began to fly,” according to Patrick. The two were married at High-

local missions, such as starting the “Pray for Our Schools” program with former HIS Principal, Kathy Paiml, where church members pray over all Helena schools each week. You have no doubt seen the yard signs around town for this. The Pastor and his family have also plugged into the Helena Miracle League. “You know, in mission work, you usually gain far more than you give,” said Patrick, alluding to sone Sam’s getting his first hit with the help of one of the Miracle League athletes.

land United Methodist Church on June 10, 2000, and the couple’s first home together was in the mission field in Riga, Latvia, where Patrick served as a Methodist pastor and church planter. “Beautiful old churches there had been confiscated by Stalin during WWII and turned into everything from gymnasiums to cinemas. The new government there was searching out the churches original owners and returning the properties to them. My job included helping to reclaim the Methodist churches there,” said Patrick. The couple came back to the states where Patrick led the conference as Mission and Advocacy Director for the next three years. This led to planting churches around the world into exotic locales like Cambodia, Thailand and Laos as well as several nations on the African continent and then to Central and South America to places like Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela. “I served as partnership coordinator for New Mission Initiatives through the General Board of Global Ministries encompassing about 12 regions around the globe. I once got caught up in a coup in Guinea,” remembered Patrick, “and it was during this time that my prayer life got a lot better,” he smiled. In 2012, Patrick and Hannah welcomed twin sons, Sam and Clint. “We

named the boys after two dear friends of mine who had been killed in the terrible earthquake that shook Haiti, Sam Dixon and Clint Rabb. They were called home by God in the ‘Hotel Montana’ which collapsed when the earthquake hit.” These days, Patrick is the senior pastor at the Church at Cahaba Bend, and is becoming more and more involved in Helena. He and son Sam are volunteering with the Helena Miracle League. “You know, when you serve, you often get more out of your service than you give,” said Patrick, who went on to share that a Miracle League player who they were there to assist ended up teaching Sam, who plays soccer, how to bat and helped Sam to get his first big hit in a game one Saturday. The Church at Cahaba Bend under Patrick’s leadership started the “Pray for our Schools” campaign where groups of prayer warriors pray over each Helena school and its students, teachers and administration weekly. You might have seen their yard signs around town urging other like-minded Christians to Pray for our Schools, too. To Patrick, Hannah, Clint and Sam Friday, welcome to Helena!

Helena Middle School Support Person of the Year Paraprofessional Casey Abbott Casey Abbott has a big heart. As a paraprofessional in an elementary school setting, that sort of goes with the territory. This year, Casey was honored by being selected as the Support Person of the Year for Helena Elementary School. Her duties here involves working with 2nd graders who have special challenges. Casey grew up not far from Helena. She was born and raised in Montevallo, Alabama. She graduated from Montevallo High School in 2003. After high school, she attended college first at Jefferson State Community College and then went on to graduate from the University of Montevallo. At the age of 16, Casey found her love for children by working in after school care at Meadow

view Elementary School in Alabaster. She also worked every summer camp she could during her high school and college years. In 2006, Casey had her first child and was also hired on at Meadow View Elementary as a paraprofessional within that same year. She worked there for a year before an opening came up at Helena Elementary. Casey has worked at Helena Elementary for 12 years

now. “My job is like a support system; I get to help so many kids. Right now I am in an inclusion. It’s a self-contained room, and it enables the kids to focus on their work,” said Casey.

Casey currently lives in Calera with her husband, David, and children. The couple has 2 daughters, Lila, 14, Allie, 11 and 2 stepsons, Nathan, 14, Logan, 12.

Helena High School Support Person of the Year School Nurse Lori Goodson Lori Goodson, Helena Intermediate School Nurse, was selected for the Support Person of the Year award by her peers recently. Lori grew up moving all over with her family. However, she remembers most of her early life growing up in Huntsville. She decided to venture off and attend nursing school at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham, graduating in 2009. While still in the nursing program, Lori worked in the NICU at Brookwood Medical Center as a unit tech and nurse for a year. In 2010, she was hired at Calera Elementary as the school nurse and worked there for seven years. She decided she’d like to be closer to home, and was hired at Helena Elementary School for two years. In 2019, Lori saw an opening at Helena Intermediate School and has worked there for the past two years. Growing up, Lori says she always had a love for children. She says she always dreamed of

becoming a mom one day, and with her caring and nurturing disposition, she is no doubt a pro at it. Lori’s husband, Jeff, currently works for DR Horton as a building superintendent. They have two boys: Reid, 14 and Will, 8. Reid attends Helena Middle School and Will attends Helena Elementary School. This past year has been crazy dealing with the global pandemic. Lori said, “We were over prepared here with cleaning supplies, etc., but glad for it, just the same. It was all about keeping our children and staff as safe as possible,” Lori said. Lori said her favorite thing about her job is the kids. “You not only have to put a band-aid on a scrape, but you need to be there for them mentally and emotionally, too.” During this past year, Lori has been there to support all the kids. “A few may not have it great at home or might just need someone to talk too. I’ll be momma eight hours of

38 Late Spring 2021 / www.CityOfHelena.org

the day, if I need to. I treat these children like my own and would

do anything to make it better for them.” Lori stated.

Helena Middle School Support Person of the Year School Nurse Adrienne Vanderford Helena Middle School Nurse, Adrienne Vanderford, was recently voted the Support Person of the Year. Each year, staff members are given four names from which to choose the one who most deserves the honor. Adrienne grew up in a town outside of New Orleans called LaPlace. She attended the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, where she received her degree in nursing in 2002. “What inspired me the most about becoming a nurse was my father. He was a doctor, and he allowed me to observe what he did at his job while I was growing up,” said Adrienne. Adrienne’s husband, Kyle, also graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi as a CRNA. Right after college, Kyle applied for a position at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. That is what brought the Vanderford’s to Alabama.

After working at Brookwood Medical Center for six and half years, Kyle and Adrienne decided to start a family of their own. Adrienne stayed at home to spend time with the kids before going back to work. Later, she subbed as a nurse for about four years. She has been the nurse at Helena Middle School for three years now. Adrienne and Kyle have two children: Kaden, 14, goes to Helena Middle School where he enjoys wrestling and playing clarinet in the band. “He is so excited to start marching with the band next year at the high school,” said Adrienne. Ainsley, 9, attends Helena Intermediate School. She enjoys dancing. “Its definitely been different this year with Covid, but we are getting through it,” said Adrienne. This year, the school administration switched the offices of the counselors

and nurse. The office switch was beneficial for Adrienne because she was able to have a quarantine room right beside her office. This was to keep “well students,” especially ones with chronic conditions, separated from students who might have been exposed to Covid-19. Adrienne told us that her favorite

part about her job was the kids. “I love getting to know all of them. They are so funny. They come up the funniest jokes and sayings, and it’s just the highlight of my day.” Congratulations to Nurse Adrienne Vanderford on receiving this special award, and thanks for being there for our students!

Helena High School Support Person of the Year School Nurse Kellie Kelley Kellie Kelley, Helena High School Support Person of the Year, was selected by the teachers. This year they had no doubt, Kellie, the school nurse, deserved the honor! Kellie has been a nurse at Helena High since it first opened its doors in 2014. Before accepting the job at HHS, Kellie had worked for Shelby County Schools for a little over 13 years. Her job consisted of floating to different schools in the county. She trained new nurses, substituted for nurses, taught CPR and taught teachers how to administer medication on field trips. “I got to see how different each school was,” said Kellie. She grew up in Montgomery, Alabama and attended Auburn University where she earned a degree in industrial design. But she always had a love for healthcare, so went back to Troy University in Montgomery to pursue her nursing degree. She worked for two years in the SICU at Baptist South Montgomery. She then moved to home health and specialized in wound care. Kellie met her husband, Stanton

Kelley, in Montgomery. They will have been married for 26 years this August. Kellie and Stanton have two children: their daughter, Cameron, 24, and son Caleb, 19. Cameron graduated from Troy and Caleb is currently a student there. A job change for Stanton is what brought the Kelleys to the Birmingham area. They currently live in Greystone. “After working here, I have found the most wonderful people here,” said Kellie. Kellie told us some favorite things about her job. “Supporting students, parents and the staff’s mental health and safety has been the most significant contribution this year and it will have ripple effects for years to come,” said Kellie. Part of her role as a caregiver is to make sure people have the right information and the right

perspective to address their fears as well as addressing their wellness. She contributes by normalizing school as much as possible and offering support when it’s not. Being a nurse in the school, she makes sure she is constantly studying ever changing data and offering truthful information to debunk rumors. She hopes that she has calmed some of the fear and anxiety over

Covid-19 and educated students, parents and staff on the reasons they are doing what they do. “I think as a nursing staff we’e been very innovative and we’ve adapted and used the tools we’e been given. We have a great staff at Helena High and they include me in their collaborations for students.” said Kellie. Congratulations to Kellie on receiving this prestigious award.

Helena Baseball Seniors provide leadership Pictured here with their biggest fan, Ms. Alice (City Council President Alice Lobell)

“At this time, we ask that you please direct your attention to the playing surface at Husky baseball field. On behalf of Helena high school principal April Brand and head baseball coach, PJ Guy, we want to welcome you to senior day 2021. Today, we are honoring the commitment and dedication of our seniors and their families to the Helena high school baseball program.” This was how the stadium announcer called it on a Saturday in April as he introduced the special Baker’s Dozen group of ball players who provided so much senior leadership on this year’s Husky baseball team. The announcer continued: “The accomplishments for this year’s class: 69 wins in four years, even with the 2020 season cut short with only 12 games played; seven players in this senior class have already signed baseball scholarships, the most of any class to ever come through the Helena high school baseball program. Three players from this senior class participated in the 2018 class 6A state finals. And in seven years, we have yet to graduate a senior class that has not participated in the state championship game.” The team’s final record was 26-9, 7-0, undefeated in area play. At press time, the team, which lost a tough one in the end to top ranked Faith Academy in Mobile, is currently ranked number four in 6A by MaxPreps. The seniors who played their hearts out this year include: Griff Minor. Parents are Scott and Harriett Minor, sister Jessalyn. helicopters like his late brother T.J., who flew an Apache helicopter in the US Army. “Ms. Alice” Lobell, Helena City Council President and all time big Husky supporter, was also called to the field for a special presentation from the 2021 senior moms, in which she was officially made a member of the “Senior Mom’s Squad” and given a T-shirt to prove it! Since Senior Day, The Huskies earned the title of AREA CHAMPS and were undefeated in area play. The baseball team got a big 5-1 win over Chilton County to clinch the Area Crown. Good luck to all the seniors as they move on to college! And we’d be remiss if we didn’t give a big salute to Head Coach P.J. Guy, the best darned baseball coach in the state. More important than his ability to build a competitive baseball team are his abilities to develop solid young men. We are blessed to have him as our head man for baseball at Helena High School. Good luck over the summer and Godspeed to the seniors. See all the senior day pics on our Facebook page @HelenaCityNews.

HELENA SOFTBALL SENIORS Senior Night for the 6A Area 6 Champion Husky softball team was in April, and even though 7A powerhouse Hoover was on the schedule as the day’s opponent, it didn’t intimidate our Helena Husky girls, as they had previously split the pair of games they’d played against the Bucs this season. The day did not end as planned, but these seniors are battle

tested and ready to fight for the state 6A crown. The Huskies have five seniors on the squad this year, and each of them was honored with a pregame introduction in which they walked out with their families under a tunnel of bats held up by their younger teammates and posed with their families in the pitcher’s circle.

This year’s seniors are: Emma Bjornstad, Lexie Bullock, Daisy Capps, Emily Crowe and Julia Wilkins. Hats off to these seniors as they prepare for the upcoming regional tournament. The girls clinched the regular season Area Title early and the day before press time, won the Area 6 tournament crown, too, blow-

ing the doors off Chilton Co. 13-1. Currently, the Huskies are ranked No. 2 in he state for 6A by the AHSAA. They take their Area Crown to the Regional Tournament next in Tuscaloosa. Go Huskies! See pics from the girls big 13-1 win over Chilton County to claim the Area Tournament Crown on our Facebook page @HelenaCityNews.

Fireside Fairytale

Hats off to the Griffins and their staff at Helena Hollow for hosting this year’s Fireside Fairytale Prom for Juniors and Seniors at Helena High. For many years, Helena has identified with farms dating to the once cowfilled pastures on 261 at Bearden Farms and the Griffin family’s cow pastures on 17. These have always drawn the attention of passersby and was most of what many who passed through our town in bygone days knew of Helena. Amy and Jamie Griffin have taken their farm to a whole new level these days, creating a regional attrac-

tion that draws thousands to Helena Hollow from all over central Alabama. From pumpkin patches and attractions for kids to an assortment of barnyard animals strolling the grounds, the couple also throws a mean prom, judging from the happy faces on a Saturday night in April, 2021. Jeremy Raines took his cameras out to record the event in pictures. Take a stroll down memory lane as you look through these photos and remember your own prom. This is a good looking group of Huskies, and we wish the seniors all the best as they embark on their futures.

MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

The old saying “Many hands make light work” was never more evident than the Saturday following the March 25th tornado as volunteers from Helena and surrounding communities joined city employees and elected officials, utility company employees and railroad workers to clean up the mess the tornado left in its wake. w The EF-3 tornado changed the landscape that awful Thursday in Old Town Helena, Liberty Heights and other spots nearby. It was a true miracle that nobody in town was seriously injured or killed. Volunteers worked side by side with crews from Alabama Power, CSX, the American Red Cross and several church groups including the Baptist Disaster Relief organization and Church of the Highlands Serve Teams to begin cleaning up the rubble. A joint effort by Helena United Methodist and First Baptist Helena found volunteers from both congregations joining together to provide a spaghetti lunch with drinks and salad from Homeplate Cooking to go for anyone needing a good lunch on the big cleanup day. Volunteers went around town spreading the word to “meet at the First Baptist gym for a

good meal,” and many took advantage of the southern hospitality. Cumberland Presbyterian Church members mobilized to gather donations of supplies needed for families hit hardest by the disaster. We took our cameras out to record the beginning of the big cleanup effort. More help will be needed over the months ahead as families seek help in getting back to normal, especially in some of the less fortunate areas of town off Cunningham Drive, where it was said that many were uninsured. Faith can move mountains, though, and if there is one thing about residents of Helena—we have faith, don’t we? The first Old Town Live event went on as planned the following Saturday on April 3rd, and though the landscape around Amphitheater Park looked different, the event forshadowed good times to come this spring and summer! Thanks to Dennis Martin, Jeremy Raines and Lillie Gaston for allowing us to use some of their wonderful pictures for this article. Dennis sent us some of his drone shots which show the entire scene from above our ordinary line of sight.
