FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK Have you noticed that Amphitheater Park is looking better after all the tornado damage? Much more to come. Our volunteers cleared over 1,000 tons of debris in total, and now contracts are in place to replace fencing with more permanent ballards and to run underground power to upgrade electrical capabilities in the park. More on this later. Congratulations to firefighter Lagrone who completed swift water rescue training and firefighter Shearon for completing rope rescue training, adding to our emergency rescue capabilities should they ever be needed in the event of an emergency. The lighting has been upgraded in Cahaba Lily Park, adding additional safety for all who use this park in the evening hours. This issue recognizes four Helena Husky “Athletes of the Year” from our high school. All these athletes participated in the track program, though most participated in other sports as well. They are: Brady Barton, Damian Hines, Kya Gardner and Brianna Wilson. Read about the inaugural class of our “Husky of the Year” program, selected by the coaches and the publishers of this magazine elsewhere in this edition. Congratulations to Riley Kate Hulsey for being named to the First Team All County Soccer Team. She was the leader in goals for the Huskies this past season with 22, and returns next season, too. I have been authorized to spend up to $350,000 for additonal fire safety gear using funds awarded to us by ARPA (Alabama Recreation and Parks Association). The funds will be used to purchase
turnout gear, air packs/masks and resistance of body fluids uniforms for the fire department. Members of the newly formed Helena Diversity and Inclusion Board which were selected by the city council are: Maggie Bell, Stacee Brown, Jerome Dangerfield, Kennethee Dunner, Dominga Gardner, Wei Han, Cory Johnson, Micaela Oer, Brad Radice, Joe Steele, and Gracious Washington. They are already meeting, and this can be nothing but a positive for us going forward to insure inclusion for all in the city. Thanks to everyone who came out to National Night Out, a national movement where police and fire departments host an event for the public to come out for a night of fun and gives the community a chance to interact one-on-one with members of our police and fire departments. Other organizations participating included the Shelby County Sheriff”s Department who flew in a helicopter and brought along a tactical vehicle. A hit was a simulated drunk drivers course where one could drive an all terrain vehicle through a course in our high school parking lot while wearing googles to simulate how it feels driving at about 2.5 times the legal limit of alcohol. It was a sight to behold! The Alabama Army National Guard was also there as well as other vendors from around town. My thanks to all the participants and to everyone who came out to make this evening a success. And then, in the same week, Councillor Leigh Husley put togther a violunteer crew to honor our first responders by treating them to a red carpet dinner just for them and their families at the Sports Complex. I know I join her in thanking all who contributed to make this special night for the men and women who work so hard each day to keep us safe.

August 1st was designated as Gold Star Children’s Day in honor of the many who lost a parent while they served our country in the military. Hats off to Eric Fort for spearheading that effort here in Alabama. The Buck Creek Festival is back and scheduled for September 24 and 25. A full festival is planned and its director, Scot Newman and his crew of volunteers are hard at work. It’s a light weekend where football is concerned, with both Alabama and Auburn playing lesser opponents on their schedules. If I were a betting man, I’ll bet there will be a television or two out there so fans won’t miss any of the action. Hats off to Oak Mountain Orthodontics who will kick off a new scholarship program for Helena students this fall. All seniors are eligible to participate with one caveat: they must be present at the Helena vs Pelham football game to win. Dr. Priscila Denny says that she is giving one Helena Senior and one Pelham Senior a $500 scholarship this fall. If you have a senior, be sure to take advantage of this by registering with Dr Denny’s office and attending the game where a drawing will be held to select the winners. Thanks to Kim Ford from Skull Girls Soaps for the terrific job she is doing keeping Market Days as a fun, family tradion on summer Saturday mornings. It has been a great year and as the summer winds down, plans are already underway for making it even bigger and better next year. A big welcome to Genet Holcomb who takes the reins at the elementary school as its new principal. I pledge to work with her as I do with all our principals to insure that our students all have the foundations they need to flourish in an everchanging world.
As this goes to press, football and volleyball seasons are set to begin at the high school. If you are a sports fan, these are excitng times as Coach Busby and Coach Lewis both field competitive teams this fall in their respectiove sports. Be sure to make it out to see a few of their games this season. Schedules are posted elsewhere in this edition for you. Congratulations to all our AllStar baseball and softball teams! Several of them won their tournaments, and you can read about them in this edition. And finally, congratulations to the Helena High School Class of 2021. Though your graduation ceremony was interrupted due to rain for a few minutes, it went on as planned. It serves as a valuable life lesson—even though a few “storms” are bound to threaten to disrupt things in your life, your determination will ultimately see you throgh any obstacle that tries to stand in your way! Thanks to the high school for sharing the graduates’ pictures with us. You can see them in this edition along with speeches from the class valedictorian, Sydney Aldrich; its Salutatorian, Sasha Zannis; and Principal April Brand. My thanks to Ms. Brand for her leadership. She steered this class through one of the worst periods in their short lives, that of the Covid Global Pandemic. I am thankful to have her wisdom and foresight there helping to guide our students through these times. Thanks also to Schools Superintendant Dr. Lewis Brooks for all he does for our students in Shelby County. That is all for now, I hope to see you all at this Spetember’s Buck Creek Festival!

September Date Set for BUCK CREEK FESTIVAL!
Delayed for over a year due to the Corona virus global pandemic, Helena’s Buck Creek Festival (HBCF) will return to the Helena Amphitheater September 24-25, 2021. “I’m thrilled to join our festival committee in announcing the return of Helena’s Buck Creek Festival this fall,” said HBCF Chairman Scot Newman. “After postponing for over a year, we’re relieved that public health risks have diminished to the point that our committee feels comfortable resuming plans to produce the festival.” This year’s event will include the festival’s signature duck race (a fundraiser for the Helena High School band), as well as a variety of vendors, food trucks, activities, musical performances, and a children’s activity area. Helena’s Buck Creek Festival will also include a new feature: a special area for festival guests who suffer from sensory issues. Helena City Councilwoman and HBCF Vice-Chair Laura Joseph said, “In conjunction with Councilwoman Leigh Hulsey, Helena Police Chief Brad Flynn, and Kulture City, Helena’s Buck Creek Festival Committee is pleased to offer a space where those who are affected by sensory issues can take a break and regroup, giving their families the ability to attend large events when that may not have been an option before.” The festival committee is actively recruiting sponsors, vendors, and musical acts for this year’s event. Please visit www.helenasbuckcreekfestival.com or email helenasbuckcreekfestival@gmail.com for more information. Festival updates will also be posted to www.facebook. com/HBCF20. Helena’s Buck Creek Festival, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is a family-friendly annual event which raises funds for local charities and has returned almost $300,000 to the community over the life of the festival. Run entirely by a committee of volunteers, the festival has consistently been ranked one of the best festivals in Shelby County.

Meet coffee roaster and Old Town Helena’s Bert Davis from Daysol Coffee Lab Carolina, where he says he used it to cram for exams. His major was Outdoor Education, but laughs and says he has never used it. Instead, Bert travelled as a bass player in a band called Part Time Heroes playing all original Indie Rock around the Southeast. “We played wherever they’d listen,” laughed Bert. In 2008, he moved to Denver where he lived until 2019, and it was here that he really got into roasting his own coffee beans, learning and perfecting the craft.“Then I got into another band called Felling Giants, a Christian rock band, and it was here that Bert says he first began selling his hand-crafted coffee on the road to earn some extra money. “And also where I perfected the three blends that we sell today at Daysol Coffee Lab.” Bert has a financial partner who lives in Denver, Peter Solis, and the name Daysol came from blending their two names, Davis and Solis, together. Next thing you know, Bert moved to the Birmingham area with wife, Erin, a native of Colorado, and his two children. Erin works full time as an administrative assistant at a Birmingham area church, and Bert recently hung
out his Daysol Coffee Lab shingle in Old Town Helena where he sells his very special hand crafted coffees today. “You might catch Erin there on the weekends helping me with the Saturday morning crowds and anything else that needs doing,” said Bert. “We oftentimes recognize great coffee, but all too often, we settle for less than great out of convenience,” said Bert, “but we shouldn’t have to do that.” Bert offers a subscription service where you can get great coffee delivered right to your front door. More information is found on his website @ daysolcoffeelab.co. It’s hard to beat front door service for convenience,” he finished.
The world’s absolute best coffee, custom roasted right here in Old Town Helena!
4097 Helena Road Helena, Al 35080
Coffees are graded by processors at the farm level from 1-5, with 1 graded as “specialty coffee—the best of the best.” Daysol coffee blends are all made from grade one beans. If you haven’t yet tried Daysol’s coffee, it is available from Daysol Coffee Lab in Old Town Helena and also at Helena Drugs just up from Walmart. Bert closes at 1:30pm each day in order to make wholesale deliveries to his growing base of wholesale customers, so if you miss him, you can buy a bag of his ground or whole bean coffees from Helena Drugs. We are proud to have Bert and Erin as members of the Helena business community, be sure to stop in and welcome him at your earliest convenience! Meet Bert Davis, proprietor of Daysol Coffee Lab, a new coffee roaster in Old Town Helena. If you are a coffee lover, you owe it to yourself to give Daysol a visit at your earliest convenience. Bert gets beans in fresh each week and has his roasting process down to a science to insure the coffee you brew from his beans is the very best that money can buy. Bert features several blends of beans which he has named: • Wanderlust, featuring beans from Brazil and Guatemala • Gratitude, a Colombian and Ethiopian blend of beans • Odyssey is a Honduran and Costa Rican blend of beans. (A light to medium roast is used on all Daysol coffees.) My personal favorite is Wanderlust. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s the flavor or the name that attracts me, but I am buying it five pounds at a time, so you can bet it is delicious. I think it’s definitely the flavor though, because it has become my all time favorite, and anytime coffee comes into a conversation, I always urge people to try a bag of the dark orange brown colored goodness. Bert says he didn’t start drinking coffee until he was in college at Winthrop near Charlotte, North

Meet new Helena Elementary Principal
Genet Holcomb
“I actually planned to follow in my grandmother’s footsteps and become a nurse,” said newly appointed Helena Elementary Principal, Genet Holcomb. “But then I spent a week mentoring kindergartners my senior year in high school—and THAT was the moment I knew that I wanted to become a teacher instead.” It is our pleasure to welcome this 25-year Helena resident and former assistant principal at Helena Intermediate School back to town in her new role as head lady at the elementary school. She is a self-described nurturer, and what better description could one have for an elementary school principal who is charged with watching over the early development of our youngest students? Genet is a Peach County native who grew up in Clanton and graduated from Chilton County High School. She went on to earn undergraduate and masters degrees in earely childhood
development from the University of Montevallo and an Ed.S in Leadership from Samford. “My first teaching job in Shelby County was as a reading recovery and 2nd grade teacher at Calera Elementary,” said Genet. It was during this period that she met her husband, Bret. “We were introduced through mutual friends,” she said. “We were married in 1996, and we just celebrated our 25th anniversary. Our first home was here in Helena, in the Dearing Downs neighborhood.” Genet would eventually hold the title of assitant principal at Helena Intermediate School before being offered the chance to fill the role of principal back at Calera Elementary. When the opportunity arose recently for HES’s previous principal, Mary Anderson, to assume the head job at her children’s school at Chelsea Park, the chance for Genet to return to her hometown and take over Mary’s
position was like a dream come true for Genet. During her time at Calera, she still remained involved in Helena with two children of her own attending school here. While her son Cade was a member of the Helena High bass fishing team, Genet served as its sponsor. (Cade is now a senior at the University of Montevallo and on their National Championship winning bass fishing team.) Daughter Addison was just elected a senior captain on the Helena Huskies Cheerleading Squad for the next school year, so watch out for Genet at all the school’s sporting events. “The reason we are here as educators is our children. Their needs come first and foremost. I want to build on the wonderful traditions that have been associated with our elementary school here in Helena for decades. I have experienced it both as a young mom, a teacher and an administrator. I am also a
Helena citizen. I look forward to working closely with my fellow teachers, our students and their parents. I know what a gift this job is, and I am happy to be back here working full time in my own community. People often don’t care what you know until they know how much you care,” she continued. “The realtionships that we foster with our teachers, parents and the community at large will all combine to give our students a firm foundation on which to build their futures.” Well said. Welcome home, Genet Holcomb—we could not have selected a better leader for our children to follow!

Dr. Priscila Denny annouces that she will begin offering a scholarship this fall to two lucky seniors, one from Helena and one from Pelham High school. “I have offices in both cities, and I am always looking for ways in which I can give something back to these communities who have supported my orthodontics practice.” These $500 scholarships come with a twist: the winners will be selected by a drawing at halftime of the Helena vs Pelham football game, and the winners MUST be present to win. “I hope this will be a fun addition to the game. I plan to make this an annual event,” said Dr. Denny. For over 15 years, Dr. Denny has provided “Movie Star Smiles” to her patients at Oak Mountain Orthodontics with convenient offices in Helena’s Publix Shopping Center or in Pelham on Old Montgomery Highway just a few blocks off Highway 31 in Riverchase.

Looking for clever, inexpensive gift ideas for someone special? Check out the cool gift wall at Helena Drugs! They have a terrific selection and are looking to expand their inventory with locally made products as they find them. What do you give the guy who has everything? How about an aerosol can of the world’s best shave cream that has an old fashioned barber’s brush attached to the spray nozzle to make any shave feel special—pick up the perfect gift set at Helena Drugs! Pharmacist Ryan Taylor also carries one of the best soap lines we have ever used. Hand poured in Gadsden, the smells are sensational and the bars long lasting. A perfect addition to any gift. (My personal favorite is the vanilla honey, but there are lots of scents from which to use!) And speaking of honey, experts say a dose of local honey each day can keep the sneezes away. Have you heard that? Helena Drugs carries some of the best in the area.
“Central Alabama Honey” comes from bees in nearby Saginaw (Alabaster), and is just what the doctor ordered! Of course if you’re a coffee drinker, you should definitely pick up a bag of one of the three coffee blends from Helena’s new Daysol Coffee Lab. The beans are imported from mainly Central and South America and hand roasted right here in Helena. Helena Drugs stocks a nice selection of both ground and whole bean. Pick up a bag today! Ryan says you will not pay more for a prescription from them, either. “We offer some of the lowest prescription costs whether you have insurance or not, and accept all insurances. We compound and even offer dree delivery when needed.” They’re open from 9am-6pm five days a week and 9-1 Saturday. They are located near Walmart Neighborhood Market between San Antonio Grill and Mr. Lin. Phone them at (205) 729-5060.

Helena couple making a name for themselves as professional photographers Untold Imagery is a new professional photography business located in Helena and run by the husband/wife team of Daniel and Christina Dennis. Established in September 2020, this duo specializes in fine art portraiture in boudoir, intimate weddings and elopements, and families. Daniel and Christina are both from Tuscaloosa County, and met in high school. They both went to the University of Alabama, and got married shortly after Christina’s college graduation in 2013. It was then that they found a home in Helena, and according to Christina, they have both become completely attached to this town. Christina said, “The feel of Helena was unlike any other we had been to before, with friendly faces, and a community that looks after and supports each other. It didn’t take long before we were hooked!” Currently, they live in the Dearing Downs community with their daughter, two dogs, and cat. Their clients come from
Helena and the surrounding cities of Pelham and Alabaster, but so far, they have travelled to various states throughout the South and Southwest. The couple loves to travel, and Daniel says they look forward to continuing to grow their travel portfolio in the future. Within the next five years, Daniel says they look forward to opening their own stand alone photography studio. And they also look forward to being able to give back to their home town by hosting events, teaching workshops for children and aspiring photographers, and building relationships with the people of Helena. You can contact Daniel and Christina through their website, untoldimagery.com, or email them at hello@untoldimagery. com. You can also check out their work on Facebook (Untold Imagery), and Instagram (untold_imagery). Welcome to Helena, Daniel and Christina!

HPD Library Program The Helena Library is always coming up with interesting programming for youngsters, and for July, HPD Officer Jeff Murphy talked to the group about the police. He started by going over all the implements he carries with him on the job, and added in some humor to keep the group interested. Who knew that a police baton also made a perfect back and ear scratcher? He chose not take out his side arm, however, instead warning children how dangerous they can be in the wrong hands, and he told them what to do should they happen upon one. After his talk, children were presented with badge stickers. The group then travelled outside to the police department where Officer Murphy’s truck with the front tag SRO2 was parked. SRO stands for Student Resource Officer, the additional designation given for the title he carries each day during the school year when his duties include keeping one of our most vulnerable populations safe. Outside the police department, Officer Murphy went through the contents of the truck that he drives. The program ended with a group photo. Judging by the smiles, Officer Murphy’s program for the library was a big hit. Thanks to him and our Helena Police Department for keeping us safe each and every day.

City of Helena selects new Diversity and Inclusion Board Members Helena’s new Diversity and Inclusion Board was created after Mayor Brian Puckett proposed a diversity and inclusion framework with numerous citizens expressing the need for having a board such as this. Diversity is about the make-up of an entity; recognizing the differences. Inclusion is about how well different groups within the whole may contribute and also having their presence and perspectives valued and integrated into the equation to form a consensus. The Helena City Council approved eleven Helena residents for the inaugural board. Some are familiar faces like Brad Radice, Laura Joseph, Maggie Bell, Dominga Gardner and Joe Steele, while others are all people of high character who we look forward to getting to know more about. The board is comprised of members who come from different ethnic backgrounds, genders, age, race, professions, thinking
styles and religious backgrounds. The new board members are: • Maggie Bell • Stacee Brown • Jerome Dangerfield • Kennethee Dunner • Dominga Gardner • Wei Han • Cory Johnson • Micaela Oer • Brad Radice • Joe Steele • Gracious Washington. The city council liaison is Helena Councilwoman Laura Joseph. The board members’ preliminary focus will be to assess the city’s current operations and identify areas which need improvement. Then the focus logically shifts to working on improving those areas. Diversity and inclusion is all about recognizing our differences and working together to insure that as many voices as possible are valued and heard.

Officer Jeff Murphy with a fine looking group of young readers Greetings from the Library, Summer Reading 2021 is complete. This year, the library had 30 great programs spanning six weeks. Animal Tales displayed some odd and amazing animals. The Alabama Wildlife Center entertained with some of their ambassador birds. The Helena Fire and Police Departments held live programs that were entertaining and informative. In addition, Mrs. Erin stepped up and provided Storytime (virtually) all summer long. Thanks to all the incredible talent that produced these unique programs. Special thanks to the library staff who created this neat program. Finally, we want to thank everyone who attended and participated—thank you for spending the summer with us! The featured author for August is Eric Carle. Eric is an acclaimed writer and designer of picture books for young children. He is well known for his book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Join the library staff for an Evening Storytime featuring books by Eric Carle on August 16th at 6:00pm. If you enjoy crafts, come by the library on August 20th for a take home Caterpillar craft inspired by Eric Carle. The Friends of the Library August meeting was held Tuesday, August 3rd in the library. The main discussion was about the Library booth at
Helena Market Days and The Buck Creek Festival. The library is excited to be invited back to these events and will have a table on Saturday, August 21st for Market Days, and another table on Saturday, September 25th for The Buck Creek Festival. If you attend these events, please stop by and visit! If you like to meet new people and help out in your community, join the Friends of the Jane B. Holmes Public Library. Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization that meets monthly. The main goal of the Friends group is to support the library with simple projects and provide publicity and community awareness. To join, you can sign up at Helena Market Days, fill out an application form at the library, or visit a meeting. It’s the first Tuesday of each month at 5:45pm. Call (205) 664-8308 for more information. Please ask for Daniel Dearing, Library Director. September will feature Pete the Cat books! Many of you will remember these books from your youth, and they continue to inspire! The library will offer a take home Pete the Cat craft on Thursday, September 2nd. Watch out for other Pete the Cat news coming soon. The Library will also be holding a Three Day book sale in September! The book sale will be held Thursday-
Saturday, September 16th-18.th You will find all types of books for all ages. Find some treasures (while they last!) at great prices and support the Helena Library! All proceeds from the sale will be used to buy new materials. The library only accepts cash or checks. Helena Independence Day celebration rewind… Saturday, July 3rd in Old Town was a fun day in Helena with “Helena Fest” sponsored by the Helena Business Association (HBA), its sponsors and the City of Helena. The fun started at 5pm and lasted until dark-30, and I’ve heard reports that the after parties in various night spots around town were hopping late into the evening.
32 Late Summer 2021 / www.CityOfHelena.org
I took my camera down to Old Town with my family to pitch a blanket and watch the fireworks. We listened to some good music from the Rescue Dogs, and I strolled around for about an hour snapping pictures of folks enjoying the evening, and then took a few fireworks pics, of course, some of which made up the background for
this spread. Thanks to Talk 99.5 for doing the music simulcast—it was awesome, and made the fireworks that much better! Thanks to the HBA and all its sponsors, the City of Helena, Mayor Brian Puckett, and Helena City Council members for making fun, family events like this possible!
Inaugural “Putting First Responders FIRST” dinner held at the Sports Complex to honor our first responders in Helena a big success! “Every day, our first responders serve us and this event is an opportunity for us to serve them,” said council member Leigh Hulsey. Putting First Responders FIRST is a non-profit which was birthed out of an overwhelming desire by Hulsey to show appreciation for first responders and their families in Helena. Police Chief Brad Flynn said, “These men and women put others first every day. That’s the job of a police officer. Tonight, thanks to some wonderful people, the spotlight will be on them for a change. Tonight is all about thanking and celebrating those that selflessly dedicate themselves to our community. I hope they not only enjoy themselves but see how much they are appreciated.” Hulsey continued, “We are hosting an appreciation dinner for our first responders free to them and their families thanks to donations from the community. In addition, the event will provide an evening of entertainment and prizes for our Police Officers and Fire Fighters. To make this a huge success, donations were sought from the community. And boy did they respond!” According to the Putting First Responders FIRST Facebook page, they received donations from Helena Hardware, high school student Brooks Bedsole, Helena Council President Alice Lobell, Helena Health Club, Helena Nutrition, Publix, WalMart, Primrose School of Riverwoods, CrossFit Alabaster, Golden Rule BBQ of Helena, Helena Nutrition. Jay Modi with Chevron, Chick-fil-A Helena, Big Time Bounce, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Samaneigo, Councilman Hewy Woodman, former Mayor Mark Hall, Cam Ward, State Senator April Weaver, Leigh Hulsey, Dave Smith from Helena City News and many others. “We are humbled to have this recognition from the community and thank Leigh Hulsey for organizing this event. We are truly blessed to serve such great people here in Helena,” shared Officer Jeff Murphy. The event was open to the public to come out and honor Helena’s First Responders. There was a food truck, free inflatables for children, and music for everyone to enjoy outside while the first responders and their families enjoyed being served inside. Plans call for this to become an annual event. Here are a few pictures from the special evening…

FABY CLARK
Faby on the deck at the Depot Deli and Grill and with her family, husband Jeremy and daughters, Gabi, 13, and Livie, 11.
This former Brazilian semipro volleyballer and current head of Helena High’s foreign language department is venturing into the real estate industry. Here is her story…
Many may recognize Fabyanna Clark (Faby to friends) as the energetic and vivacious former volleyball coach and head of the foreign language department now at Helena High school. She currently teaches Spanish I, III and AP. Faby has also been an acknowledged favorite among her students. She was one of Helena High School’s original teachers when the school opened in 2014. But what you may not know is that Faby, a native of Brazil, was recruited at the tender young age of 14 to move seven hours from her home in the central part of Brazil and play on a semiprofessional volleyball team. There, at the age of 14, she was paid a salary, provided an apartment she shared with seven teammates, provided one meal a day and transportation to and from the gym each day in order to hone her skills in the game. “We played the fall season and then had tournament play throughout the year. So between my schooling, which the team also provided, and volleyball, it was a full time job,” said Faby. “It was like a club team here, only more intense being full time. I attended class from 7am til Noon each day, ate lunch and headed straight to the gym, where we practiced from 1:30-5pm year round.” “I changed clubs three times during my teenage years and ended up in the large city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, playing for one of the largest and most dominant volleyball organizations there, the one sponsored by Nestle. I played on Nestle’s junior team. A soccer player discovered Faby, who also served as the Nestle team’s model for promotional purposes. He had attended Barry University playing soccer in the South Florida area and suggested I consider coming to the U.S. I had become friends with the mayor of Sao Paulo, and it so happened that his girlfriend played volleyball for Miami Dade
University. I was torn between going pro in Brazil or coming to the states to continue my education. A visit was set up for me with the coaches from Miami Dade University, a junior college. They offered me a full scholarship during the visit, and I accepted on the spot. Even though I didn’t speak a word of English, I just felt that this was the direction I wanted to take. The scholarship offer was a dream come true for me.” “Volleyball opened so many doors for me, and I am so grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. And even though I did not speak English at first, I am very outgoing and quick to pick things up, like the English language, so I was excited for this whole new life that was laid out before me. Our team at Miami Dade won the national championship my freshman year, and Georgia State began to recruit me to come there to play out the remainder of my eligibility. I needed more credit hours at the time to qualify for a Division I school, so in 2001, I took 24 credit hours in the Summer A semester and 25 hours in the Summer B semester to remedy that. The Georgia State Coach felt he knew the perfect place for me as an outside hitter and passer and passed along my name to the coach at the University of Montevallo, CJ Sherman. The Falcons had another Brazilian on the team, Gabi Raposo, and she spoke fluent English, so that was a big factor in my decision to go there, too. The people at Montevallo took me in like family, and I took to life in mainland USA like a duck takes to water. It’s strange now all these years later, but my life in Brazil seems like a distant memory to me—Helena truly feels like my ‘home’ now,” she continued. Faby’s husband, Jeremy, attended Montevallo at the same time as Faby, but they didn’t know each other back
36 Late Summer 2021 / www.CityOfHelena.org
then. While in school, Faby worked as a translator for Summer Classics in Pelham, and that job continued after college. It was during this time that a mutual friend introduced the two over dinner at nearby Ragtime Cafe. “It was love at first sight,” said Faby. “We only dated nine months before we were married. Sixteen years and two daughters later, the couple’s children are enjoying life and attending Helena schools. Gabi is 13 and Livie is 11. Both play a mean game of volleyball and currently play on club teams here. She eventually began working in human resources at Summer Classics, and they sent her back to school at Troy Montgomery to get her masters in HR. “I worked there four years. I was married, and we were pregnant with our 2nd child and living in my husband’s hometown of Clanton. He was an ALFA agent in Prattville. I noticed a job opening at Prattville High for a Spanish teacher. I did not have my teacher’s certificate at the time but was hired under an emergency hire situation, as they did not have any applicants qualified to teach Spanish. I went back to UM to obtain my teacher’s certificate shortly after that. I knew Amanda Lewis, who had been hired as the volleyball coach there before Helena High opened, and I was friends with another teacher from Prattville High who had gone on to become a coach at Chelsea High, which is where Helena’s first principal, Jay Peoples, had been. They both recommended me to Jay, and I was hired to help open Helena High School. I helped Amanda with the volleyball team the first couple of years along with teaching Spanish before the demands of being a mom to two talented volleyball players and all the duties that entails kicked in. Today, Faby is head of the foreign language department at Helena High,
and has plans for a new challenge—she is venturing into the real estate business. “Home ownership is such an important part of the American way of life. I have always excelled in building relationships, and I see real estate as another facet in which I can be of assistance in helping families navigate the difficult challege of finding the perfect home that fits within their budget and then helping them arrange all the financing and insurance and eveything that goes along with that aspect of their lives. I have so many students who have graduated now and moved on and are now ready to buy their first homes. This is an area I think I can be of help to them, and being multilingual, I can serve a growing Hispanic/Latino community as well. And any others in need of a real estate agent who can meet them where they are and help them to lay a firm foundation for their family’s future that includes home ownership. I’d like to stay involved in all my students’ lives and be there for them if they ever need my assistance.” Faby is currently affiliated with eXp Realty in Hoover. She is specializing in properties in and around her hometown of Helena. “I am working hard to become known as Helena’s go to real estate professional. And the Real Estate Chica to any Hispanic and Latinos in the area. (Chica means young woman in Spanish.) Faby Clark is a person of the highest integrity who is full of energy and determination. “I will work around the clock to accomplish my goal of becoming one of the top real estate agents in this area!” said Faby. We have no doubts! Best of luck to Faby Clark in her new real estate venture, and thanks for the job you are doing leading the foreign language department here for the Huskies, too!
Thinking about buying or selling a home or piece of property? Give your real estate Chica a call! I am a Brazilian-American who is passionate about family, friends, traveling, workouts, food, wine, life, and finding positive aspects in every situation. I love meeting people and getting to know them. I came to the USA in 1999 to attend college on a volleyball scholarship. As a student athlete I learned the importance of hard work, dedication, persistence, resilience, and perseverance which I bring into my life on a daily basis.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Montevallo and a Master of Science in Human Resources Management from Troy University. I have been an educator for the past 11 years, currently head of the foreign languages department at Helena High School, and I absolutely love to build relationships with my students and share with them my love for the Spanish language and culture.
get my energy from them. During the COVID shut down last year, I decided to take on a new challenge and get my real estate license so that I could continue to build relationships and help people through life’s transitions like getting married, having children, empty nesting, relocations, or any other situation that might bring about a change in latitude. For someone to welcome me into that journey is an honor, and I am mindful that it involves trust in me and my skill set. It is a duty that I take very seriously and find quite exciting. There is a very rewarding sense of fulfillment in helping my clients find their next home. Therefore, do not hesitate and give me (your chica) a call!

Rebecca Luker told her mom, Martha, “I’m going to Broadway,” after winning her first talent show in the sixth grade. Rebecca did indeed follow her dreams to New York City after growing up in Helena. She graduated from Thompson High School (went to school in Alabaster since her mom worked for Thompson schools), and left an enduring legacy at the University of Montevallo. Rebecca was encouraged by her sixth grade English teacher, Marilyn Minor Pickett, to join the talent show to kick off her singing career. Her mom, Martha Luker Hales, says that Rebecca was shy early on, but she was willing to give the talent show a try. This would be the first of many on-stage performances in which Rebecca stole the show. “She sang My Favorite Things from the Sound of Music with Mrs. Pickett playing piano,” said Mrs. Hales. Mrs. Pickett described Rebecca as “always so kind, considerate, and gracious.” She inspired so many and made the idea that following your dreams was not only possible, but achievable; no dream was too big in young Rebecca’s eyes. She won that talent show and received a standing ovation. Rebecca told her mom after winning the talent show, “I’m going to Broadway!” After that early success, she lived much of the rest
of her life performing on various stages. At Thompson High School, she was head of the color guard’s ‘rifle team,’ participated in the choir, performed multiple solos, and sang with the choir at Alabaster First Baptist Church. She majored in vocal music at the University of Montevallo, where she graduated with honors. Former professor Ed Robertson states, “From her arrival at the University of Montevallo, Rebecca made a huge impact—not only with her beautiful voice and overall talent, but with her graciousness and her pleasant nature. Instead of evoking envy and jealousy, she inspired other students and by example, she raised their performance level. She was an excellent student—both in her academic work and her ‘ear training.’ She did not forget Montevallo, and Montevallo didn’t forget Rebecca.” In 2020, the University of Montevallo named the stage in its new Center for the Arts The Rebecca J. Luker Stage. They have also set up a scholarship for UM theater students in her honor. It was during her performances in college that talent scouts saw her incredible talent and that led to her first Broadway performance in New York. After working as an understudy for the female lead in Phantom of the Opera for one year (to the wife of the producer, no

less), the lead became ill, and Rebecca threatened to leave if the producer didn’t put her on stage, according to Mrs. Hales. Rebecca did indeed perform as the female lead ‘Christine’ in the Phantom of the Opera that night on Broadway. She did not relinquish that role for the next three years. Rebecca’s Broadway roles after this flourished. Some of her best included the role of Lily in The Secret Garden, Magnolia in Showboat, Maria in Sound of Music, Marian in The Music Man, Claudia in Nine, Winifred in the original Broadway production of Mary Poppins, Marie in Cinderella, and Helen in Fun Home. Rebecca also performed roles in several off-Broadway productions. Rebecca was married to fellow Broadway actor David Burstein for over 20 years. He currently stars in the Broadway version of Moulin Rouge. When describing Rebecca’s singing, David said, “She opens her mouth and her heart falls out.” Mrs. Hales says that Rebecca never met a stranger and just always had this kind ‘glow’ about her. Rebecca received several noted accolades during her career. In 2001, Rebecca was inducted into the Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame. In 2010, the University of Montevallo awarded her an honorary Doctor of Musical Arts, and in 2011, Rebecca was presented
with the Distinguished Artist of the Year Award by the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Most recently, her birthday, April 17th, was officially declared “Rebecca Luker Day” by an official proclamation of the Helena City Council and presented by Mayor Brian Puckett. Rebecca was diagnosed a few years ago with ALS and fought valiantly to live her life to its fullest for as long as she could. A few weeks before she passed in December 2020, her doctor suggested a tracheostomy. She refused. She told him,“If I don’t have my voice, I don’t know who I am. My voice is everything I am. I’ll take my chances.” Rebecca died two days before Christmas on December 23. No doubt, she serenaded the angels with song on her arrival. By all accounts, she left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Rebecca Luker was one of a kind—a loving wife, daughter, sister, friend, and gifted performer. Those that knew her best used the following words and expressions to describe Rebecca: charming, graceful, prodigious talent, kind in every possible way, humble, loving, gentle, a beacon of light; It has been said that her golden voice would wrap you in peace. She left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure to know her. Rest in peace, Rebecca.
Riley Davis
Sam Praytor
Richard Fitts
Three Former Husky State Champions headed to the Big Leagues! I caught up with two of Helena’s new MLB draftees over breakfast in July the day after they had been chosen. (The third, Bama catcher Sam Praytor, was flying out to Miami that morning to begin his journey with the Florida Marlins and couldnt make it.) Auburn right hander Richard Fitts had grown a bit since the last time I saw him. He says he has grown two inches since high school and is now between 6’4” and 6’5.” Richard was drafted by the iconic New York Yankees, and was driving back to Auburn after breakfast to clean out his apartment before flying to the Yankees training facility in Tampa Florida. Best of luck to Richard as he dons the uniform of Babe Ruth and
Mariano Rivera. He says his fastball tops out now at around 97 mph. Go Yankees—we hope to be watching when he takes the mound for his first Yankee Roll Call. But first, he says he must prove himself in the minors, though he won’t learn his first team for awhile yet, as there are several farm teams in the Yankees organization. Right hander Riley Davis was set to transfer this upcoming season from UAB to the Capstone to pitch for Coach Bohannon’s Crimson Tide team before being scooped up by the Seattle Mariners. Riley says he is about 6’2” now and his fast ball tops out at around 94 mph. The Mariners are a relatively newer team still creating their own traditions after joining the American League’s West Division
as an expansion team in 1977. Their mascot is Mariner Moose, and the organization has farm teams in Arizona, Arkansas, and Washington. The team’s home offices are located in Seattle, Washington. Riley was on a PA track at UAB, and said he plans to graduate with his class this month. He was set to fly out the week he was drafted for orientation at the team’s training facilities in Peoria, Arizona. Sorry we won’t get to see Riley suit up for the Tide, but we wish him, Richard and Sam the very best in this opportunity for them to suit up and pitch in the league that every young pitcher in the country aspires to play in some day! Both these new MLB pitchers
and their friend, MLB catcher Sam Praytor, have played in Helena since their youth. I know all their parents are over the moon, especially their dads who served as some of their first coaches as kids. What a sense of pride and accomplishment at seeing their sons drafted and on their way towards a successful playing career that many wish for but few obtain. And speaking of early coaches, we’d be remiss if we did not mention one of their biggest fans, Husky head coach PJ Guy. What their dads and youth coaches started, he helped hone during their high school years which set them all on their paths towards success. Godspeed and best wishes to them our former Huskies as they begin their MLB journeys!
2021 HUSKY FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? Coach Richie Busby’s Huskies are primed for the season after a tough off season of conditioning. Many have added much needed weight, strength and speed. Coach Richie Busby must replace 15 starters on the football team this season, a tall order for any coach. “We lost 15 guys who were really good football players,” said the coach, “but we have a lot of good guys coming up as well. We have a lot of work to do between now and August 20,” he said in July at a 7 on 7 scrimmage. The Huskies decided to forego spring drills in favor of starting a week early, as allowed by the AHSAA, and getting in some extra reps nearer to the season. Two good athletes tranferred in this year who should provide immediate help. Junior wide out Nathan Wade who played for Hope Christian last season, and there is a new face battling it out with senior Mac Turner and two other players for the QB1 position,
Dalton Llewellyn, who transferred in from Victory Christian. “Dalton is an excellent athlete, and if he doesn’t win the QB position, he’ll help us out as a DB or WR or possibly both.” The seniors made a committment back in January for the team to lift weights four days rather than three, and it’s paid dividends. “Guys like Kyle Tolbert and Jackson Snider have made great Strides. JC Sivley has put on some weight as has Joel Logan, Kasyn Bustamento, Payton Woodall, Andre Odom, Joseph Roberto and Justin Yunke. The guys have all busted their butts in the weight room this winter. They have all changed their bodies, and have all gotten bigger and stronger.” After mentioning these names, the coach said “I know I’m leaving some guys out,
42 Late Summer 2021 / www.CityOfHelena.org
and I don’t want to do that, because the whole team works hard every day to get better. Our team is built on the weight room, toughness, running the football and playing good defense.” Defensive end Joel Logan is back, and at 6’4” and 215, will anchor the Husky defensive line this year. “Joel can really run, too,” said Coach Busby. Matthew Thompson is back and is expected contribute again this season. “Matthew missed part of the summer which hurt him a little bit. He’s got the length and speed, now we just need to get a little more weight on him.” “In the middle, we’ve got some new guys: Derrick Wilson, Xavier Guy, and Brian Holland can all be really good players, but we’ve to have a another guy step up for us.” Connor Pugh is back for his
senior season, picking up where his older brothers left off, that of an undersized, over achieving defensive end. “Connor plays with what I call ‘Pugh effort,’ said the coach, “which is ‘all out’ every play. He is strong, too. There have been three of the Pugh brothers here, and I wish his parents had three more. Connor has played everywhere from saftey to outside linebacker to defensive end. He can do a lot of things for us on that side of the ball.” The back end of the defense is young but very athletic. “We feel good about those guys, but they’ve got to have have game reps to keep getting better.” The Huskies will have to replace four starters on the offensive line
this year after graduating Seaburn Hines, Jack Blanton and Matthew Ray. Spencer Bozeman has decided not to play football this year, so the Huskies have four really good offensive linemen to replace. “With an offense based on running the football, finding quality replacements for those four guys is going to be real important for us.” Returning is Trace Barnett, who will anchor the OL. We’ve been working hard on the offensive line this year. We’ll be alright,” said the coach. “We lost two really good running backs in Kobe Hughes and Marquis Johnson.” Kobe’s younger brother, Kellen, a junior, will return as will AJ Horstead, another junior who flashed some promise last season in limited carries. “AJ has put on some good weight during the
off season, and we also have Jordan Washington, a sophomore who we’re expecting big things from this year. We’ll use all three backs in our offense, and we can also use Kasyn Bustamento back there, too. Kasyn has made nice gains in size, strength and speed, and plays a little of everything for us along with Hunter Hale.” Hunter is another rising sophmore who is poundfor-pound one of the toughest and most versatile kids on the field. A freshman WR might be hard to keep off the field this season. Torrie Ward was burning it up in 7 on 7 scrimmages, and with his tall, lanky build, might present offenses with some problems if they pay too much attention to returning senior, JC Sivley, a 6’5” pass catcher who has gained elite size and strength in the off season. “I have told Torrie
that the sky is the limit for him if he works hard, said Coach Busby. Torrie’s dad was a great basketball player for UAB, and Torrie plays basketball, too. Those round ball skills carry over into his receiving game, as well. The starters for the Husky receiving corps this year include JC Sivley at the Y, Hunter Hale and Nathan Wade at the Z, Kasyn Bustamento and Andre Odom in the slot at the H, and Ryan Berry, Miles Mitchell and Torrie Ward outside at the X. In addition to Mac Turner and Dalton Llewellyn, the preseason QB battle also has Carson Acker and (Tripp Bolen?) spinning it for the coaches during camp. The Huskies have four kickers Coach Busby feels good about, Matthew Blocker, Aidan Naron, John Terry and Austin Lewis.
Austin is the young left footed kicker coming up from a stellar middle school career. “Asking a 9th grader to go out and kick in front of thousands under the lights is a tall order, but all four of the Husky kickers work really hard, so we’ll just have to see between now and August 20th who will handle placekicking duties for us,” said Coach Busby. “Nearly every position on our team has someone behind them pushing them to get better. I know the guys are about ready to strap it up and get the season underway.” Sounds like a recipe for success. I know I join thousands here in town who are eagerly anticipating the 2021 edition of Friday Night Lights—Husky style. Go Huskies!

2021 Introducing the inaugural Class of Helena City News’s
Husky Athletes of the Year
Kya Gardner
Brady Barton
Brianna Wilson
Damian Hines
Kya Gardner-Elected President of her senior class, Kya graduated with a 3.89 GPA, was a member of multiple Honor Societies, and is committed to run track for the University of Mobile. She was the anchor of Husky state champion relay teams for the past three years. Her basketball coach, Alan Skinner, had this to say about Kya: “Kya Gardner played four years of basketball while at Helena High School as well as having a stellar track and field career. She was always the consummate competitor and teammate. Her basketball career and academic career were similar because in both, she filled many roles. On top of her athletic achievements, Kya was a leader of the student body of Helena High School, academically as well as serving in clubs and organizations. Kya is a great example of what a high school athlete should look like.” Kya was a member of the Helena Teen Council and served as secretary her senior year. She also serves as a mentor in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and was an AHSAA Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete of the Year nominee. Congratulations to Husky Co-Athlete of the Year, Kya Gardner.
“Brady Barton will be running Cross Country and Track & Field at the University of Alabama. The numbers are just a part of Brady Barton. He is a leader, on and off the track. He does things the right way, day in and day out. Brady is a fine young man and has a great future in front of him. He will be successful at whatever endeavors he takes on. Brady was a joy to coach and teach.” Track Coach Richard Anderson Brady was the 6A State Champion this year in the 800m and 3200m during the Indoor State Meet held at Birmingham’s Crossplex track facility, and set records in both events. Brady is an unassuming student athlete who quietly trains for his sport. Coach Anderson finished, “Brady Barton is one of the finest young men I have had the privilege to coach during my 27 years of coaching. He is a shining example of Helena and all it represents.” Congratulations to Husky CoAthlete of the Year, Brady Barton!
Brianna Wilson was elected Vice President of her senior class. In addition to maintaining a 4.05 GPA, Brianna stood out in three sports: volleyball, basketball and track. She earned All County in volleyball her senior year, and was an anchor on both her basketball and her volleyball teams. She placed 4th in shot put at the State Indoor Track Meet her senior year. Her volleyball coach and assistant athletic director, Amanda Lewis had this to say about her: “Brianna is the most well rounded student athlete. She has a drive for success, and a vision for progression. She walked the halls of Helena and was everyone’s friend. She never met a stranger and always wore a smile on her face. She led when needed and followed when necessary. She is so humble in her abilities. She is an example for everyone who follows her.” Brianna is a member of multiple honor societies, and was recognized as a Fox 6 Rising Star. Brianna will continue her volleyball playing career as one of the founding members of the new volleyball program at Wallace State Community College. Congratulations to Husky Co-Athlete of the Year, Brianna Wilson!
Damien Hines won the State Decathlon this year and was one of the anchors on the Husky track team. This while coming off injuries that might have dampened the season for many. (The decathlon combines 10 different track & field events, if you’re counting.) Damien’s track coach, Richard Anderson, had this to say about him: “Damien competed in the AHSAA State Decathlon Championships in May, where he won with over 6100 points! He had to overcome two significant injures to win the crown: he had a pin placed in his wrist after breaking it earlier, and at the end of indoor track season, he severely injured his ankle while pole vaulting. It was a long process for him to get back, but he did, and he capped it off with a great victory! Damian is one of the finest young men I have had the privilege to coach during my 27 years of coaching. He is a shining example of Helena and all it represents.” Damien also played defensive back on the Husky football team. As a reward for his hard work, Damien will follow his older sister Erin with a scholarship to become a member of the track team at Samford University this fall. Congratulations to Husky Co-Athlete of the Year, Damien Hines!
Helena High School graduates 338 students in the Class of 2021 with a rainy outdoor commencement in a packed Husky Stadium
Over the course of this school year, I have thought a lot about what I might say to you all at your graduation ceremony. To be honest, like this roller coaster we’ve all been riding for the past year, my thoughts to share with you tonight have been evolving in the same way. Unlike any graduating class before you, I can say with confidence that you all have navigated the most unusual school year to date...maybe even the most unusual school year ever. And believe me, the adults have been living this most unusual school year right alongside you. Obviously, for some the word unusual may carry a negative connotation. Something unusual may be considered uncommon, atypical, or unconventional. However, something unusual may also be considered unique, exceptional or extraordinary; all words with a more positive connotation. I want to focus for a moment on how this unique school year has given you extraordinary preparation
for an exceptional future. You see, for human beings change isn’t always easy, and this year has been full of changes! Change also brings about personal growth and you, members of the class of 2021, have grown in so many ways! You have learned to be strong, to adjust, and to navigate an evolving Senior year. You have learned to persevere and developed resilience. You have learned how to handle it when things didn’t always go your way. You have learned to be more aware of and concerned for the needs of others above your own. You have learned the importance of meaningful relationships with others. And, like the kickball game I observed recently at your Senior picnic, you have learned to find joy in small things, celebrating whenever something felt “normal.” You will want to remember the life lessons of this most unusual
school year as you embark on your next steps. No doubt, you will face other difficulties throughout your life... hopefully not another pandemic, but difficult times nonetheless. When facing future challenges you will draw on the strength and resilience the experiences of this past year have developed in you. But along the way, don’t forget to be aware of the needs of others and to build positive and meaningful relationships with others in your life. And when you face tough times down the road and things don’t go exactly as you planned, remember to celebrate and find joy in the small things. Ultimately, the life lessons of the past year are far more impactful than the academic preparation you’ve had, and why I believe each of you are destined for your very own unique, exceptional, and extraordinary future. I will leave you with this: For those of you who have been in my office you might have noticed that
I am a huge Charlie Brown and Peanuts fan. I love Charlie Brown because he is like the little kid in all of us when we feel uncertain, uncomfortable, or even afraid. One of the Charlie Brown quotes that I have thought about several times this year when things were hard and the situation uncertain: “Whenever I feel really alone, I just sit and stare into the night sky. I’ve always thought that one of those stars is my star, and I know that my star will always be there for me. Like a comforting voice saying, “Don’t give up, kid.” – Class of 2021...Keep looking up...that’s the secret of life! And, don’t you ever give up! Good luck to each of you, come back often, and remember that Helena High School is always your home. April Brand HHS Principal
