FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Greetings, The election held on August 23rd has established who will serve as your Mayor for the next four years. Three council positions – Place 1, Place 3 and Place 4 have also been determined. The Place 2 and Place 5 races will be settled in a run-off election to be held on October the 4th. As with the primary election, the run-off election will take place at the Pelham Civic Complex. Where I am pleased and honored to serve as your Mayor for another term, I am sorely disappointed with the voter turnout for this election. 18.7 per cent voter turnout tells me we are not nurturing the form of government we have been blessed with, one that has come at a high price.

The Ancient Greeks invented Democracy. The Romans took Democracy to the next level by adding the Republic form of government where the electorate names their representatives. Our Founding Fathers perfected the notion of the Democratic Republic by infusing the idea of personal Freedom and Liberty. The Greek and Romans passed into history. Is our form of government destined to suffer the same fate? These abysmal voting numbers suggest it is possible. Yes, I suppose we all have ample reasons to be puked out with politics at all levels. But let’s not give up on our last best chance for self-determination. Voting is more than a right; it is an obligation. OK, I’m off the stump. Be well. I’ll see you around town.

FROM COUNCIL MEMBER RICE It is campaign season again for our country and for our city. Campaigns are not usually fun for the candidates or the public, but they have taken on a different nature in recent years and have become much more unpleasant and divisive than necessary. The proliferation of social media has definitely contributed to the related issues. Rumors and misleading information have become the norm and do nothing but damage a community. I have been thinking a great deal lately about the real needs of our city and the fact that we have to stop letting things like this tear us apart. We have to work together and focus on our real objectives in order to have the opportunity to reach our full potential. As you probably read, Mayor Gary Waters, as well as Councilmembers Rick Hayes, Beth McMillan and Maurice Mercer, were all recently re-elected. Congratulations are in order for these four. There will be runoffs for places 2 and 5 on October 4th. Thank you to all who voted, but our voter turnout was at a historically low level, so PLEASE remember to vote in the October runoffs. Mayor Waters, Council President Hayes and I attended the Pelham City Schools in-service meeting to kick off the 20162017 school year. We were treated

Rick Hayes - Place 1 rickhayes@pelhamonline.com

to a rousing performance by the PHS band and dance team to set the mood. We were then invited to participate with the BOE members in honoring all Pelham City School employees who have given 25 years or more in service to our children. We were privileged to welcome each recipient to the stage as their name was called to receive an award. Following the award ceremony, Superintendent Coefield and members of the Central Office staff gave interesting and sometimes very entertaining reports of preparations for the new school year. We’re all eager to see what this 3rd year of operation for PCS brings. Thank you to all the outstanding teachers and support personnel who are devoted to the education of Pelham’s children! Please be careful as you travel on Bearden Road since the sidewalk construction project is now underway. The first part of the project involved the relocation of utilities to allow for the actual construction of the sidewalk, which is just getting underway. Another project that will affect traffic is the CSX crossover rail line. Once construction begins, Lee Street will be closed to through traffic for probably close to one month, but please be patient because this project, when completed, will significantly

Ron Scott - Place 2 ronscott@pelhamonline.com

reduce the number of trains that block railroad crossings in that area. It will also help with some localized flooding issues. As many of you know, the Highway 261 Flood Mitigation Project had been delayed awaiting final approval from FEMA. However, FEMA has now approved this project and the related additional funding, so the remainder of the work will begin soon. We are also very pleased to announce that ALDOT just approved $3 million for the right-of-way acquisition needed for Phase 1 of the Highway 261 Widening Project. This is a major first step for this very important project. Along the same lines, the engineering is in progress related to the additional westbound lane that has been approved for Highway 52 between I-65 and Highway 31. Establishing the Commercial Development Authority (CDA) was a key step in a plan for redeveloping and revitalizing areas along Pelham Parkway. The CDA has purchased two aging strip malls which will be torn down to make way for new development. Members of the CDA are seeking

new businesses, especially restaurants, to augment those already established here. Our growing population and strong increase in home construction are certainly helping in the recruitment of new businesses. You might have seen the recent proposal that the city received for an upscale development that would be adjacent to and complementary to the Summer Classics headquarters and showroom. We also anticipate being able to announce the opening of a new restaurant in Pelham very soon, and negotiations are underway for several others. Pelham Park Middle School is the beginning of the development of our Pelham City Center. When completed, the city center will include the school, the current park facilities, a recreation center, public library, outdoor basketball and sand volleyball courts, an inclusive playground, trails & greenways, and a dog park. FROM SUPERINTENDENT COEFIELD

After investing much time in classroom preparations and professional development over the summer, our teachers and staff were thrilled to greet the students and kick off the new school year on August 11. Teachers at all levels have jumped right in to provide our students with rigorous coursework and innovative learning opportunities. From Project Lead the Way and Laying the Foundation to Advanced Placement courses and Google Classrooms, our teachers are implementing strategies and techniques that take learning to the next level and engaging our students in new and exciting ways. The integration of new technology in our schools provides our students with skills and tools for 21st century learning, and our technology initiative is an ongoing focus for our system. We’ve recently added over 900 more Chromebooks for student use in our classrooms, along with other devices that support student learning such as interactive projectors, improved infrastructure, and more. Facility improvements at Pelham High School continued through the summer with the completion of new, state of the art classrooms and labs for engineering, chemistry, physics, and biomedical sciences. We’ve

also added a fully equipped special needs classroom and made enhancements in the cafeteria with updated furniture and new seating areas. In addition, our facilities for football, soccer, and track & field were enhanced with new turf in the stadium, lined for both football and soccer use, and significant upgrades to the track & field facilities and fieldhouse. As construction winds down at Pelham Ridge Elementary, we are gearing up our preparations for the transition of students to the new building. After our fall break, students zoned for Pelham Ridge will attend the new school beginning on October 17. We’re energized by all of the positive changes in our schools, and we’re putting great emphasis on the actions that will take our schools, staff, and students to the next level. This summer, we assembled a committee representing administrators, teachers, students, parents, and members of the board of education and city council to establish a mission statement that reflects the essence of our purpose. Our workgroup spent much time in discussion about our goals, beliefs, and commitments to arrive at a statement that is easy to remember and gets to the heart of what we aim to do. The mission of Pelham City Schools is to collaborate with parents and community to inspire and

empower students to achieve personal success. You’ll see the key words in the statement are INSPIRE, EMPOWER, and ACHIEVE. These three simple words are powerful and apply to all of us. When we all (teachers, students, parents, community) work together to put these words into action each and every day, we will accomplish and exceed our goals. We encourage you to get involved in the many opportunities to visit our schools and support our students. From open houses and board of education meetings to daily dinner at Pelham High School and sporting events, we all benefit from the support and involvement of our community. You can also visit PelhamCitySchools. org to sign up for our weekly eNewsletter, view our 201617 school calendar, and more. Also, follow us on Facebook (PelhamCitySchoolsAL) and Twitter (@PelhamSchools) for the latest school news. We look forward to a great

school year and all we will accomplish together as we embrace our mission to inspire, empower, and achieve.

Pelham proclaims September Ovarian/GYN cancer awareness month

At the August 15th Pelham City Council meeting, Tammy Anderson and Jennifer Smiley accepted the City’s proclamation declaring September Ovarian/ GYN Cancer Awareness month. Both ladies are Pelham residents and awareness advocates. This is Pelham’s 3rd year to participate in the state wide awareness effort called A State of Teal. The early beginnings of this statewide awareness campaign were started by the CanSurvive support group about five years ago to spread awareness about this silent killer. CanSurvive is now an initiative of the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation (LCBF) and the support group is currently sponsored solely by LCBF. The first teal lighting of the state capital in Montgomery was in 2012 with local municipalities joining the following year. In addition to the capitol and municipalities declaring September as GYN Cancer awareness month, other

local businesses are also joining their awareness effort by lighting their locations with teal lights at night, displaying Why Teal posters in their windows or placing AStateofTeal.org yard signs in front of their business. You may be wondering, Why Teal? Teal is the cancer awareness ribbon color for ovarian and GYN cancer. Why the need for awareness? Currently there is no test for most of the GYN cancers. While pap smears are necessary, they can only detect cancer in the cervix. Tammy knows first hand. She had routine yearly exams and pap smears. As a matter fact, it was less than 6 months after her exam in the spring of 2014 that she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. She said, “I knew I hadn’t felt well and something was wrong with my body, but I just did not know exactly what it was.” She is now also a strong advocate of second opinions because she was

first misdiagnosed as having colon cancer, but is very thankful they found it. If it hadn’t been for the doctor finding the tumor growing into her colon during a colonoscopy, she might not be here today to receive this proclamation. Tammy said, “I will always wonder if I had known the awareness acronym BEAT, could the cancer have been found sooner, before it spread to my colon?” BEAT stands for Bloating that is persistant, Eating less and feeling fuller sooner, Abdominal pain, and Trouble with your bladder or stools. If women start experiencing all four of these symptoms for more than two weeks, it is time for them to start seeking out answers. The sooner it is detected, the less likely it is to spread and the less chance it will recur which means a longer life expectancy. Did you know that only about 25 percent of women diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer will survive five

years? Tammy happily shared that next month is the second anniversary of her diagnosis and currently, she has no evidence of the disease nor has she had any reccurences! She would like everyone to help support the awareness and fundraising efforts by sharing the BEAT acronym, lighting up teal, and participating in one of the many events sponsored by LCBF in September. For more information, visit AStateofTeal.org or support their fundraising efforts by donating to Tammy’s HeadOverTeal race team—“TealOutPelham with Tammy Anderson.”

Pelham Business Spotlight Royal Bedding You’ve heard the old saying: you spend a third of your life in bed. But think about it for a moment. Let’s say you are blessed enough to live forty more years. That’s 14,610 days. Over 350,000 hours! Which means you’re slated to spend nearly 117,000 hours in your bed. (That figure doesn’t even factor in things like breakfast in bed, the flu, or Netflix marathons.) Faced with the math, it only stands to reason that a wellmade bed is a vital part of your life. Which means investing in your bed is actually a big deal. But where can you find a quality bed? They’re not hard to find, and you don’t have to look very far at all. Royal Bedding is Alabama’s largest bedding manufacturer selling directly to the public, and

they’re both manufacturing and selling them right here in Pelham. What does this mean for you? Both higher quality, and lower price. Since their showroom and their factory are both in the same building, it costs less for Royal to make a top-quality mattress. And as another old saying goes, they pass the savings on to you. Owner Tom Vigneulle highlights another benefit of Royal Bedding having their factory machinery and their showroom under the same roof. “When you come to Royal Bedding, one of the benefits we offer is that you may find a mattress that you like, but you would like it a little softer or a little firmer, and having this kind of machinery allows us to specialize that just for you.”

Pelham City Schools’ Staff Kicks Off School Year at Back to School Institute Meeting

From quality two-sided mattresses, to adjustable beds, to elegant bedroom groups, Royal Bedding has everything you need to properly invest in that important one-third of your life. You can visit them online at royalbeddinginc.com, call them at (205) 664-8252, or stop by their showroom, located at 2829 Pelham Parkway, just north of the Pelham Tennis

Center and across from the site of the new Pelham Municipal Complex.

Pelham City Schools teachers and staff kicked off the school year with their annual Back to School Institute Meeting at Pelham High School on August 8. The Pelham Ridge Elementary PTO hosted breakfast in the newly renovated cafeteria, and then staff enjoyed a surprise performance by the entire Pelham High Band! In addition to school introductions and other system updates, the Board of Education and City Council members took time to recognize teachers and staff with over 25 years of service in the field of education.

A relative helped put it all into perspective for me recently. “If a dollar were turned into a second,” he asked, “how long do you suppose it would take to accumulate a million seconds?” I gave up because I dodn’t have my claculator with me, and he said that it would take only 12 days to accumulate a million seconds. “How long do you suppose it would take then,” he went on, “to accumulate a billion seconds?” Not being a math wizard, I said I had no idea. “It would take 31

Watching me throw my hands up, he explained that it would take 31,000 years to accumulate one trillion seconds! That gave me pause to see it extended out that way. So with a national debt today of over $19 Trillion dollars, if a dollar were a second, it would take

(205) 382-4172

In our media savvy society today, tremendous American debt figures still seem to go in one ear and out the other. Maybe we’ve become desensitized to harsh realities. Perhaps our normalcy bias shelters us from harsh realities and the fear of anything extraordinarily bad happening to us as Americans. After all, aren’t we the land of the free and home of the brave? Over the last seven or eight years, however, our national debt has skyrocketed to previously unheard of levels. I admit, I have a hard time grasping just how much a trillion dollars really is. A million seems like an aw-

589,000 years to accumulate that many seconds/dollars. Hopefully it will sink in on you, too, as you go to the polls this November. Seek out politicans you think are best able to begin to hack away at that debt figure as opposed to those who would stick their heads in the sand and kick the ball on down the road for a future generation to grapple with. Pelham City Schools replaces turf, resurfaces track and makes other improvements at Ned Bearden Stadium

“After ten years of use, it was time for a change,” said AD Kim Kiel. “New technology makes our new surface not only more durable, but safer for the athletes who play on it,” added head football coach Tom Causey. “Now, no special shoes are needed. Players use the same

cleats that they would use on a natural grass playing surface.” The new surface was installed by Pro Grass Turf, a Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania company which is a leader in the artificial turf industry. “Sand is mixed into the underlayment now, giving the surface a very natural feel.

Those of us who played on artificial surfaces 10, 20, 30 years ago appreciate the advantages this new surface offers to our athletes,” said Coach Causey. Coach Kiel added that the field is being striped with soccer markings as well as the traditional hash marks for football. “Now we will share

the main stadium with both the football, soccer and track athletes, giving a prime venue in which all of these athletes can compete.” It’s beautiful, that much is clear. Be sure to catch all the action this Fall on Bobby Hayes Field at Ned Bearden Stadium! GO PANTHERS!

Four Pelham Teams Win State The USTA Junior Team Tennis State Championships were played in Auburn this July, at Yarbrough Tennis Center. Tournament Director Jenny Robb confirmed their were about 40 teams, & close to 400 players attending this year’s event. This was the 14th year for Rusty Wilkes to coach junior teams at state. Wilkes is a USPTA Elite Pro. Coach Wilkes has been with Pelham Racquet Club since 2001 leading juniors on teams through Rusty’s Tennis Academy. This year Wilkes brought 5 teams to state. Four of those teams earned state championships. The 14U PRC Lobsters’ championship tourney came down to Sunday with them and Tuscaloosa both 4-0. The Lobsters won 33-21 over Tuscaloosa to clinch the state championship and finish with a 5-0 team record. This qualified the team to represent Alabama at the USTA Sectionals. The Lobsters had a great trip as they advanced to Rome, Georgia in August for sectionals. James League and Melanie Rehovsky were team captains. The PRC Challengers also won state with a 4-0 undefeated record and finished with a perfect score of 160 games won. The Challengers defeated Brookhighland, PRC Piranhas, Selma and Tuscaloosa. Rickey and Jennifer Lambert and Kevin Townes were the team captains. The PRC Heat won the state championship with a 2-1 team record, and finished with 93 games. Charlie Braswell and Allison Howell Lowry were team captains for the Heat. The PRC Storm won the state championship with a 3-1 team record and 140 games won overall. Clif Render and Andy Walsh were captains. In the 18U intermediate division, USPTA Pro Clay Parrish coached his PRC Pacers and Patriots teams. The PRC Pacers had a great

tourney and missed making the finals by only one game behind Greystone. Rusty Wilkes coached his defending 2015 state champion Topspin Tornadoes in the other 18U intermediate division. The Topspin Tornadoes also had a great tourney as they finished with a 4-1 team record, having just 1 team loss to Tuscaloosa. Kim Cole and Freddy Sanchez were team captains for the Topspin Tornadoes. Wilkes said this was the most successful state tourney to date for his teams. All together the 5 teams finished with a combined 18-3 team record. In 14 years, Wilkes has coached over 100 junior teams locally and at least 50 teams at the state tourney. 23 of those teams have finished as Alabama state champions and 10 have been state finalists. Wilkes has coached 19 sectional teams representing Alabama, and his teams have qualified for USTA Sectionals 12 of the last 14 years. Over the years, his junior teams have traveled to Chattanooga, Mobile, Auburn, Lexington, SC, & Rome, Ga. “I am truly thankful and blessed to do what I love and coach such amazing kids! Win or lose, I am always proud of our kids for their hard work in practice and their sportsmanship. Our junior team program continues to improve every year, and the kids always have great experiences through our teams. Now with USPTA Pro Michael Smith on board, we have started our Southern Tennis Academy for our USTA tournament juniors travel team. Several juniors have high state rankings and are winning tournaments. We really enjoy making a positive difference in so many young lives! The future looks bright as we continue to invest our time in these great kids!” Congratulations to Rusty Wilkes and all the State Champs this year!

Did you know that rubbing your skin with the leaves of mosquito-repellent plants is a sure fire method to repel the biting insects, asks Auburn University’s Tia Gonzales. With her 30 years experience as a horticulturist and agricultural program assistant, she knows many of the hidden properties of common plants. For example, Tia says that rose-scented geraniums, citronella, lavender, basil and garlic, rosemary, wax myrtle, lemon balm, lemon grass, lemon thyme and lemon verbena will all send mosquitos away. “Using these plants turns you into a walking mosquito arsenal,” said Gonzales, who is responsible for Auburn University’s one-acre medicinal plant garden. “The key is to bruise and abrade the leaves, releasing the oils. Crushing releases the plant’s chemical properties and scent.” She says to grab a few leaves from a mosquito-repelling plant such as basil or lemon balm and crush them in your hands. Then rub them across your bare skin, placing the plants’ oils and scent on your person and forming a natural, non-toxic bug repellant. “Rose-scented geraniums are

Make your own natural, non-toxic mosquito repellent a personal favorite,” she says. “I rub them on my arms and legs, making sure that I release the plant oils and scent,” she said. Rose-scented geraniums are great plants that grow in full sun, and they’re very droughtresistant. They’ll die off in winter, but come back in the spring.” She said that rose-scented geraniums, found at specialty nurseries but less available at the “big box” stores, are sold on-site to the public at AU. While Tia says it never hurts to light citronella candles outside, she prefers her own natural mosquito repellent. Using soybean oil as a base, she adds up to 20 drops of natural oils such as lavender, neem oil and catnip oil in a small spray container. Those oils are extremely efficient; catnip oil is proven more effective than DEET in repelling mosquitoes, she noted. “Neem oil smells a little garlicky,” she says, “but the other smells on top can over power that.” When placed in a cool and dark space, it’ll stay fresh up to two years, too. Best of all, the concoction is totally natural. The public is cordially invited to visit Auburn University’s Medicinal Plant Garden 365 days a year. There, you will find lists with traditional uses for each plant to use during free, self-guided tours. It should be noted that staff members give tours of the garden every third Thursday through October.

Plans for the new library are being developed by an architect in collaboration with our librarian, Mary Campbell. The recreation center and library will be located near the middle school and can be used by the teachers and students for school purposes. The recreation center will have an indoor track which will provide a climate-controlled venue for walking or jogging regardless of how HOT or COLD or WET it may be outside. There will also be a double gym, an exercise area with equipment, a dance room, a spinning room, a large multipurpose room and a meeting room. Good luck to Pelham’s own Miss Alabama, Hayley Barber, as she competes for the title of Miss America this month. As this goes to press, we are all rooting for her. Good luck Hayley, we are all so

proud of you! There is certainly A LOT HAPPENING IN PELHAM! Events at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena, the Racquet Club, Ballantrae Golf Club, Oak Mountain State Park and the Amphitheatre are enough to keep one very busy. There’s always something going on at our schools whether it is a sporting event, a play or concert, or even Open House! I hope you will take an interest in what Pelham has to offer and truly enjoy Living in Pelham! I have served on the city council for 32 years. It hasn’t always been an easy job, but it has been more interesting than I can ever explain. I have seen the city grow and develop over the years and am very proud of the role that I have been able to play

Miss Alabama, Pelham’s own Hayley Barber, says “Welcome to Pelham!” A s this goes to press, Hayley is about to compete for the title of Miss America, and all of Pelham is behind her! in this growth. Some people have suggested that it is time for me to retire, and I understand why some people who do not really know me or understand my role on the council might feel this way, but I remain committed to this community that I love so much. We are headed toward

new heights because of the people who live, work, and play right here in Pelham. You make this city great, and the opportunities in front of us are truly amazing! May God Continue to Bless Us All,
