FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Hello, Pelhamites, When I first came to Pelham, the city slogan was “Watch Pelham Grow.” A few years later it changed to “Pelham, The Gateway of Opportunity.” Sometime later our motto changed yet again to, “Pelham, Where the People Make the Difference.” What fine words; all appropriate and relative when you consider their place in the history of our city. Nearly every metric we use

to determine growth is on the rise in Pelham. Among these, school enrollment, participation in youth sports, residential construction and commercial growth. So, in the same way Hollywood occasionally rolls out a modern version of a classic film, it may be time for us to call a “do-over” on “Watch Pelham Grow.” We are growing! We currently have six residential developments in various stages of construction; housing ranging from a gated development to apartments. Pelham City Schools have one new K-5 elementary school out of the ground and a site being prepared for a new middle school. This past week, several city council members and I attended a planning

conference for Research Solutions, a Pelham business of 42 years. They are moving forward on a 5-7 million dollar infrastructure expansion that will result in additional revenue and jobs. Then there is the issue of Sunday sales. As I write this in February and you read it in March, I’m assuming the Sunday sales referendum passed in a big way (if it didn’t, skip to the next paragraph). The economic impact numbers supporting this initiative were huge; $10 million in direct impact, $7 million in indirect impact resulting in nearly a million dollars in increased tax revenue for Shelby County and Shelby County cities with an additional two million dollars generated by new jobs. I’m thinking this should help remedy some of the other metrics that are currently stagnant. It’s time to vote! By press time Super Tuesday has come and gone, but there are plenty of local races to keep us occupied and entertained until November.

From a local standpoint, let’s commit to be as civil as the passion for our particular point of view will allow. Let’s remember we will continue to be neighbors long after the votes are counted and the hot issues and tempers have cooled. Meanwhile, if you are in need of an escape from politics and everything serious, come join us on the Banquet side of the Civic Complex on April 19th for a “Parrot & Fins” party. Our party has no door charge, will begin at 3:30pm and will precede the Jimmy Buffett concert at the Oak Mountain Amphitheater. Just listen to the wisdom of James Boo-fay: “People are moving so quickly, Humor’s in need of repair Same occupations and same obligations, They really got nothing to share; Like driving around with no spare.” So true, so true. I’ll see you around town. Gary W. Waters

FROM COUNCILMAN MERCER election is important, but this election will shape our country for the next four years, so we must exercise and participate in the process. Pelham and Alabaster will also select a new county commissioner in District 4. The race will be decided March 1st as there are no Democratic or Independent challengers at this time for November. The Republican challengers are former educator Ron Griggs, businessman Ward Williams and businessman Gene Rowley. I look forward to working with the winner to continue to move Pelham forward. February 20th I had the chance to serve as a judge in the American Legion Post 555 (Triple Nickel) 23rd District oratorical contest held at the Pelham Senior Center. The contest featured one Councilman Mercer poses with Whitney Miller Fox; Debbie Parrot, the Library Guild President, and Barbara Roberts, of Pelham’s former Library Director at the Taste of Pelham 2015. own Aaron Greetings friends, neighbors, and Panthers! Today and everyday is a great day to be a PANTHER. I’ll start by congratulating our recent 6A champs in Ladies Indoor Track and Mr. Hasaan Hawthorne, our 6A, 145 lbs class state wrestling champion. While we are on the subject of sports, March 19th marks opening day for Pelham youth baseball and softball. Many thanks to the parents, coaches, and Pelham park staff that will go to make this year a success. By the time you will have read this letter, Alabamians will have selected their presidential preference for the Democratic and Republican nominees. Each

Wilks. Mr. Wilks is a senior at Pelham High School who won the local contest and will move on to the 2nd Division contest to be held at Pelham First Baptist Church and will face other students from around the state. Good Luck, Aaron! On February 25th, we said goodbye to Pelham Library Director Barbara Roberts. Barbara discussed her plans to spend time with grandkids and travel the WORLD. We wish her much success in her new role as full time Grandma. She has been a tremendous asset to the city and our library has grown leaps and bounds under her leadership. I personally enjoyed working with her on the Taste of Pelham and serving as the library liaison to the city council. March represents National Autoimmune Diseases Awareness month. Autoimmune diseases are life changing. As I advocate for Scleroderma research, I have met so many others who have different walks but face similar challenges. Recently, I met Deven

FROM SUPERINTENDENT COEFIELD

Spring is a busy time in our schools, and we’re making the most of the time we have left in our school year. Our students and teachers are hitting their stride and with new curriculum initiatives such as Project Lead the Way and our college and career academies. We’re also excited to see continued progress on our facilities updates and building plans. We will transition to two kindergarten through fifth grade schools in the 201617 school year. We continue to make progress on Pelham Ridge Elementary, which is located behind Pelham Towne Center, just off Highway 52 on Applegate Parkway. Valley Intermediate School, located on Highway 33, will be transitioned to a K-5 school and renamed Pelham Oaks Elementary. We’ve dedicated much thought, time and energy over the past several months to create a zoning plan for our system that establishes attendance zones that reflect the nature of our community as a whole while improving efficiencies in transportation and considering future growth and development of the city. You can view the latest Facilties Updates and Zoning information on our website at PelhamCitySchools. org/Zoning. Site preparation began on

Pelham Park Middle School in January, and we’re planning an official groundbreaking ceremony later this spring. Pelham High sees continued upgrades and renovations with new science and engineering labs, and a special needs classroom being built. One of the most anticipated renovations will debut this spring when the PHS auditorium is re-opened. It will feature upgrades to the stage and physical space, as well as new heating and cooling, and sound and lighting innovations. Mark your calendar for the system wide Fine Arts Showcase on April 5 and the PHS theatre department’s spring musical, Cinderella, which will run April 21-23 and April 28-30. We were recently recognized for one of Alabama's Best K-12 Practices by Lean Frog, in association with the Alabama Association of School Boards. Our best practice was awarded for the implementation of a vertically aligned curriculum in our school system. We're proud of this initiative which helps students of all ages plan, explore studies, and participate in relevant experiences that will help guide our students while in school and beyond. Riverchase Middle and Pelham High recently held Curriculum Nights to begin planning for the 2016-17 school year. The events provided an opportunity for parents and

students to learn about the College & Career Academies, meet teachers, and explore class offerings, clubs and extracurriculars. For our elementary students, 2016-17 Kindergarten Registration will take place on Thursday, April 14 from 8 am-5 pm at the Pelham Civic Complex. Registration for current students who will be in grades 1-5 will take place this spring. The schools will provide more information and details in the coming weeks. We’ve accomplished many things in our short time as

Pelham City Schools, and we’re transforming our school system into an excellent learning environment for all students through our commitments and investments. With the support of our community, city leaders, and board members, we’re dedicated to providing excellent instruction and opportunities that cultivate the well-being and success of our students every step of the way.

FROM POLICE CHIEF PALMER

Public Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility “If you see something, say something” is a phrase utilized by the Department of Homeland Security after the 2001 terrorist attacks. A campaign was initiated to raise public awareness concerning terrorism-related crimes. Well I borrowed this phrase, if you will, to further encourage the citizens in our community to speak out for our community’s safety and not just terrorism-related crimes. If you have been around me for any length of time this past year, you have heard me talk about situational awareness and also the use of this phrase, “if you see something, say something”. Your safety is the police department’s number one priority and my biggest concern, but I need your help. The men and women of the department can’t be everywhere and there are ways you can help us insure your safety. Situational awareness

basically means being aware of what is going on around you. Our officers are reminded of this daily. It is easy to achieve but must be practiced regularly. One problem that draws our attention away from situational awareness is when we perform routine tasks and this leads us to become complacent. With complacency comes the loss of situational awareness. It is unfortunate that we must live under the constant concern for our safety but it is a reality in this day and time. Please continue to remind yourself each day, several times if necessary, to be aware of what is going on around you and please, if you see someone or something unusual call the police department. As I sat in my office reviewing paperwork this past month the harsh reminder of someone not practicing this principle is evident as I read in

a report “well I saw this strange guy I thought should not be there but I didn’t want to bother anyone”, or “I saw this unusual vehicle in my neighborhood but thought I would wait to call because I could be wrong”. I can only wish these individuals would have called so we might have a chance at solving the crimes that were committed in these incidents. So, in closing please remember once again the importance of situational awareness. Be aware of what is going on in your immediate area, in your neighborhood, and call the police department if you observe anything unusual. It does not matter the situation, whether it is a person exhibiting unusual

behavior or an unfamiliar vehicle performing frequent or unusual stops, “if you see something, say something”. Thank you for your continued support. We can all keep our communities safer by partnering together. By paying attention to our surroundings and reporting suspicious activity we can make a difference. The men and women of the Pelham Police Department are proud to serve our community and thank you for that opportunity. Larry Palmer, Chief of Police Pelham Police Department Phone: 205-620-6550 lpalmer@pelhamonline.com

Pelham Parkway Golden Rule razed to make room for new Burger King A bit of Pelham history fell to the arm of a bulldozer recently as the Golden Rule on Pelham Parkway was razed to make room for a new, modern Burger King. This writer can remember back to the days before Golden Rule when Char Grill was located on this spot, offering big cheese burgers for not much money to locals and passersby on a very busy Highway 31 in the days before the interstate was finished. A Burger King franchise has come

and gone on that same stretch of Pelham Parkway in the years since. The building that housed it is now a Title Max Title Pawn store almost directly across Pelham Parkway. But the old becomes new

again, as the proud new Burger King pictured here shows. Located in front of Mi Pueblos and next to BBVA Compass

Bank. Stop in soon and have it your way!

Hasaan Hawthorne wins Class 6A state wrestling championship, MVP PHS senior Hasaan Hawthorne competed in 37 wrestling matches this year and won every single one—which took him all the way to win the Class 6A 145-pound weight class state championship at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center! Hasaan, who has wanted to be a wrestler since watching WWE and tackling his parents as a child, was born without tibias, and his parents were forced to make the terrifying decision to have his legs amputated when he was just four months old. But his lack of feet has never slowed him down. Hasaan worried his parents, Felecia and Demond Hawthorne, when playing baseball, football and other sports on prosthetics growing up before focusing on wrestling in sixth grade. Earlier that year, a wrestler named Anthony Robles won an NCAA championship in wrestling... and he only has one leg. Hasaan thought, ‘If he can do it, why can’t I do it?’ Wrestling is a sport that allows him to

compete on his own, without the prosthetics that make him a formidable 6’5”. After an impressive 3rd-place finish in last year’s championship, what else is there to strive for but the title? And strive he did, leaning up and working even harder this year than he ever has before. His perseverance paid off with the Class 6A 145-pound championship win, as well as the distinction of Alabama’s Most Valuable Wrestler in Class 6A. Anyone who watches Hasaan wrestle can see not only his ability and his drive, but his passion for the sport, too. He has worked hard to build up his upper body strength, and the results are easy to see. His long arms make for an impressive reach, and added to his muscle and the speed and dexterity of his hands, really helps him in the ring. “The same technique we teach one guy, we taught him,” PHS Wrestling Coach Eric Pollard said. “He’s learned the same way anyone

else would. It’s really no different, except now he’s a state champion.” “What’s been driving him from day one is his willingness to put in the hard work day in, day out in the offseason,” Coach Pollard continued. “It’s paid off.” “He made it his mission to finish off this year,” the coach concluded. “His dreams come true, our dreams come true, what we worked so hard for since his middle school days. We’ve come up through the ranks and it finally

paid off. It’s been a great ride.” PHS senior Dillon Turner also had a stellar season, only one match away from undefeated at 34-1. He was the Class 6A State Runner-Up in the 152-pound weight class. Both young men plan to compete at Nationals this summer and continue their wrestling careers in college. We’re excited to see just how far they can go. Congratulations to Hasaan Hawthorne and Dillon Turner!

PHS Girls Indoor Track Team takes state championship for second year After a tough battle, the PHS Girls Indoor Track Team defeated Homewood to win the 6A Indoor State Championship for the second year in row! In addition, the team had 21 All-State Athletes, and four individual State Champions. “I am so proud of their hard work and commitment,” said

Athletic Director Kim Kiel. “This senior group has now won two State Championships and two State Runners Up. A big thanks to Coach Springfield and Coach Argo for their dedication and commitment to our student athletes.” Mary Grace Strozier won three Individual State Championships

in the 800, 1600, 3200 and was a part of the winning 4 x 800 relay with Jordan Allison, Alex Wilkins and Katie Strozier. “Mary Grace is the only girl in state history to win all four distance races at the state meet,” Coach Kiel said. “As of right now, before the outdoor track season, Mary Grace has 12 Individual State Championships and has been All State three times. WOW!” But the Panthers are in no way a onewoman show. The entire team is made up of hardworking girls who

strive for excellence in everything they do. Erin Hines is a fourtime all state participant. Jordan Allison and Alex Ladewig are both three-time all state participants. Katie Strozier is a two-time all state participant. Amelia Guthrie, Kiara Roper, Emily Shaw, Melanie Taylor and Alex Wilkins have participated in all state once. The other members of the incredible PHS Girls Indoor Track Team team are Meredith Bass, Madilyn Dubose, Hope Ekundayo, Natasha Fair, Sarah Guthrie, Emily Hoang, Adalaide Jamison, Akya Johnson, Emorie Long, Mia Palmer, Perla Pichardo, Ayala Seaborn, Carys Stubbs and Gracie Vinson. Erin Long, an RMS 8th grader, was also asked to “play up” with the high schoolers because of her talent and ability. Congratulations, girls!

Barbara Roberts retires from directing Pelham Library, Senior Center Barbara Roberts, Director of the Pelham Public Library and Senior Center, has retired after 31 years with the city. The longtime Pelham advocate for literacy, education and technology has been involved with Pelham’s senior community since 1989, and stuck with it through several moves to its permanent location in the Senior Center next to the Pelham Racquet Club. “In the beginning, there was a senior program that met once every Thursday, for an hour, at the National Guard Armory,” Barbara said, explaining the program was under the Parks and Recreation department at the time. “When the parks director left, Mayor Hayes said he wanted me to temporarily take over the senior program.” Well, she did such a tremendous job right from the start that Pelham’s seniors decided they wanted to stay with the library. When the Pelham Civic Complex was built in the late 1990s, the small group began meeting there—until outside groups started renting it too often. Barbara had begun working at the Pelham Public Library in 1995, so their meetings were moved to the library. “Building the Senior Center was a tremendous thing. At the time we built this, all the senior centers in the county were in old houses, rooms in city halls, things like that. And there were no programs,” Barbara said. She really has been the most integral part in bringing services to Pelham residents at both the

Senior Center and the Library. “The thing I’m most proud of with the library has been being able to develop the staff over there, the technology improvement, and winning the Blue Ribbon Award that only nine libraries in the whole state have achieved,” Barbara said. “The other highlight would be forming the Library Guild, which now runs the very successful yearly Taste of Pelham.” Barbara has had many more successes along the way, but she does not brag. Other people do it for her! “It’s because of your ability to stick to it and let everything else go that you’ve been able to do all that you have,” said City Councilwoman Karyl Rice at the Senior Center surprise party for Barbara on February 18th. “Well, you only have so much time, so you have to choose wisely,” Barbara responded. She officially retired Thursday, February 25th, with plans to travel all over the globe with her husband Charles for several months. They also have plans to stop by and see their son David and his wife Kim, and spoil their 19-month-old granddaughters, Joan and Eve, every now and then. She has her own job description as Granny: “I am going to be a bringer of presents, a planner of adventures (that may

12 PelhamOnline.com / Early Spring 2016

not be approved of by parents), and a keeper of secrets.” As Barbara prepares to spend more time with her biological family, her Pelham family already misses her. “Barbara has been a great mentor for me and she has always been there with great advice,” said Senior Center Activities Coordinator Regina Jimenez. The two women met when Regina began doing part-time work at the library. “What has happened is, now, the senior center is an integral part of the library, and the library is an integral part of the senior center,” Barbara explained. “So when Regina is not working here, she’s on duty at the library. They are meshed in together, and it would take some doing to separate them.” And you can bet Barbara will come after anyone who might try. “We both have been lucky enough to work with a great group of seniors,” Regina added, before giving most of the credit to Barbara. “She has always been forward-thinking and progressive in both the Library and the

Senior Center. She has been a great person to work under, and I will always take the lessons she has taught me with me.” None of this means Barbara will be out of the picture. No! After the Roberts’ vacation, she plans to start coming for Tai Chi classes at the center. She plans to work with Regina in the future to set up possible overnight trips. “Regina does an excellent job with day trips, but we’ve never been able to get this overnight trip stuff off the ground, because it takes so much planning,” Barbara said. One of her new goals will be to bring in more people, who may not use the center now, with trips like these. “That is the role I will take... Because I want to go on the trips,” she laughed. Mary Campbell, who previously worked in the Children’s Department of the Pelham Library, will be taking Barbara’s place as Director of the Pelham Library and Senior Center. “Thanks to Pelham for the opportunity to serve for the last 31 years,” Barbara concluded.

2016 Polar Plunge

The Pelham Police Department held its annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics on Saturday, January 30 at Oak Mountain State Park, and raised more than $8,500 for Special Olympics Alabama. Mayor Gary Waters (wearing the bunny onesie from A Christmas Story), Police Chief Larry Palmer (dressed as a penguin), City Council President Rick Hayes, PHS coaches Sean Anderson and Joel Floyd were among the many Pelham citizens who chose to take the plunge this year. Folks dressed up as sharks, trolls, and mermaids—that’s right, Rogue Siren, last year’s costume contest winner, was back again this year. Thanks to the hosts, the sponsors, Oak Mountain State Park and DJ Thomas Nails. Thanks to Alabama Aerial Photography for shooting the plunge again this year.

Connect 2 Careers Center opens at Pelham High School Pelham High School’s Connect2Careers Center is a new space that provides students with a one-stop resource to attend career presentations and webinars, focus on career paths, receive assistance with resumes and part-time jobs, and explore different learning opportunities such as community service, internships, and job shadowing. “The C2C Center opens up to one of PHS’s main hallways where students have access every day before and after school, as well as during their “skinny” period,” explained Isabelle Eaton, the Career Coach at Pelham High School. “Students and teachers can also reserve the room any time during the day.” Her position is funded by the Alabama State Department of Education, Division of Career and Technical Education and Workforce Development. She will assist PHS counselors with student four-year planning, implementing career assessments via the Alabama Career Planning System, and encouraging experiential learning opportunities for students. That being said, Isabelle will also be on-hand in the center on a regular basis, especially during the “skinny” period. The mission of the center is to help Pelham students develop the skills and knowledge to leave high school ready for college

and career success. It has handson resources related to each of PHS’s eight career academies, including career handbooks specific to engineering or newsletters for careers in the arts. Additionally, the center will provide resources on professional skills with reference materials for resumes preparation or how to dress for an interview, even the top five professional skills Alabama employers expect. “I think the most up-to-date labor information can be found on-line,” Isabelle said. “That’s why students have access to four computers, and at each computer there is a reference card to different resources. Some of my favorites are Alabama’s Hot 40 Jobs from the Department of Labor or mynextmove.org where students can take a brief career interest assessment to see what jobs match their interests, as well as how they can find training for those jobs.” There is also a large video monitor and webcam in the center to allow for participation in webinars and face-to-face interaction with local business partners. “Bringing the Connect2Careers Center to PHS was a great collaboration with our principal, Dr. Jason Yohn, our assistant principal and Director of Career and Technical

Education Amanda Wilbanks, and our counselors, Laura Cochran and Julie Massey,” Isabelle said. “The center will be primarily for student-driven as this is their career resource. But I have met with a number of teachers and we will incorporate the C2C Center into their lesson plans. For example, an English class doing a resume project will include a visit to the C2C Center as a part of their lesson.” On February 10th, Mayor Gary Waters, several Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce representatives, PHS administrators, and others were on hand to officially open the space with a ribbon cutting. “The center is inside a small conference room adjacent to the library that was not regularly utilized,” Isabelle explained. “Luckily, the room can still be used as a conference room as needed but the students will have permanent, regular access to career resources.” On Friday, February 26th, PHS hosted a FAFSA workshop where school administrators invited a Financial Aid representative from Montevallo to use the Center and its computers to work with students seeking college financial aid. PHS Career Preparedness classes have also been using the resources as they learn about career pathways, and in March

there are plans to host PHS Engineering Academy board members, who will present a webinar and office tour. “Having worked the last five years in advising on a community college level, I know how many incoming college freshmen are completely overwhelmed by the choices ahead of them,” Isabelle concluded. “Our C2C Center is modeled on college career centers so students can become familiar with those resources and ready to implement them into use. I don’t expect every student to decide their entire career path today, but the C2C Center will give them the tools make the journey more successful.”

RMS students selected to collegiate honor bands and ABA All-State RMS Band Director Amy Moore poses with Amber Sides, Cody Monday, Anna Wilkes and Gavin Taylor. Below, a group of Honor Band participants.

Riverchase Middle School Band Director Amy Moore has been with RMS for 16 of her 23 years teaching. She has taught hundreds of talented Pelham students in that time. This year, though, records are being beaten. “I’ve really seen the band program grow over my time here, and these are some really special students,” she said. “They work very hard, and they are very competitive.” It’s not just the Superior ratings in competition that show off her students’ talent. This year, more of her students were chosen to participate in collegiate honor bands across the state than ever before. Seven students were selected to participate in the University of Alabama Honor Band. Thirteen were selected for the UAB Honor Band. Four were selected for the Auburn Honor Band. Twelve were selected for the Samford

University Honor Band. Fifteen were selected for the University of Montevallo Honor Band. And finally, seven students were selected to participate in the District IV Honor Band Festival, which will take place later this month at Homewood High School. They competed among students from schools all over Jefferson and Shelby counties to achieve the distinction. In addition to the District Honor Band, these students were trying out for the Alabama All-State Honor Band, and four RMS students made the Alabama Bandmasters Association All-State Band. Only 23 students from District IV were selected, so Amy is very proud to have four of those 23 coming from RMS! Amber Sides, Cody Monday, Anna Wilkes and Gavin Taylor will attend the ABA All-State Band Festival in Mobile this spring. Congratulations, musicians!

Let the games begin: VIS PE classes hold school-wide Olympics For the first time, the Alabama Physical Fitness Olympics have come to Valley Intermediate! According to PE Teacher Tammy Causey, the school kicked off the event with Opening Ceremonies February 16th. Each class was assigned a country to represent for the Olympics, with students making that country’s flag for the ceremony. They are now hanging

in the hallways outside each classroom. “In the Opening Ceremonies, we acknowledged each country participating, the students took an Olympic oath to promote good sportsmanship and recited the Olympic creed,” Tammy said. “We then discussed facts about the Olympics, so students could learn what they are all about. We also discussed the upcoming Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.” This event is about learning, but it’s still about fitness, too— and Tammy really enjoys

seeing how much the students are motivated to perform in PE through the Olympic format. “The Alabama Physical Fitness Olympics have changed our normal PE routine by making it a school-wide activity and involving the classroom teachers,” Tammy explained. “We keep an Olympic results bulletin board and announce the winners for each Olympic event during morning announcements.” They will spend the weeks of March competing in games like obstacle courses, relays and “human bowling,” which is Tammy’s favorite event. All the while, the students will conduct assessments on their own personal fitness goals for exercises, such as sit-ups, push-ups, the sit and reach, and pacer laps. “Our Olympic format involves a variety of skills and

activities that we have taught during the school year up to this point, which is different than our normal routine,” Tammy said. “This gives students an opportunity to be a part of a team and participate in fun, competitive events. Students enjoy making their country’s flag, keeping track of the results on the bulletin board, and earning Olympic medal certificates for gold, silver, and bronze.” In the past, at other schools, Tammy used this Olympic format and said students’ assessment scores always increase. “It was always a favorite time in our curriculum, not only for our students, but for us as well,” she said. “I hope that we will get the same results here in Pelham. I hope that by doing these activities it will motivate students to enjoy being active for a lifetime.”

PHS Winter sports teams wrap up VES and VIS celebrated the 100th spectacular seasons Day of School in a special way Pelham High athletes made a stellar showing throughout the winter sports season, finishing strong with 6A championship titles in Wrestling and Girls Indoor Track (see pg 11). Boys Basketball advanced to a regional tournament appearance for the second time in school history, nearly 20 years after the first appearance in 1997. In the program’s first year, Girls Bowling advanced to a state tournament appearance. On top of Hasaan Hawthorne and Dillon Turner’s wins at the state championship, PHS wrestlers Gio Adan, Joe Schifano, Karl Nagel and Alex Montgomery also qualified and participated in the state meet. “We had a great winter season and I am so proud of our teams and their coaches!” said Athletic Director Kim Kiel. “GO PANTHERS!!”

Students at Valley Elementary and Valley Intermediate had a great time celebrating the 100th Day of School on January 27th with themed STEM activities,

creative writing, art, fun exercises and activities and more! Students built towers made with 100 marshmallows and toothpicks, shapes crafted from 100 strips of paper and buildings out of 100 cups. These and many more projects that filled Pelham classrooms on that day of fun festivities.

Dabo Swinney above with ESPN commentator Holly Rowe and star quarterback, Deshaun Watson after claiming the 2015 Capital One Orange Bowl in the first round of the playoff series with a resounding 37-17 rout of the No. 4 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. At left, accepting the 2015 Home Depot Coach of the Year Award.

Pelham native, Coach Dabo Swinney, wins national accolades Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney became the first Clemson coach named the Walter Camp 2015 Coach of the Year after leading his Tigers to an undefeated regular season and a No. 1 national ranking heading into the National Championship Playoff Series, where they lost a nail biter to the No. 2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. He was also named the Paul “Bear” Bryant and Home Depot Coach of the Year winner; high recognitions and well deserved accolades for this high achieving Pelham High School graduate. As most reading this may know, Swinney is a former Pelham Panther who walked on to play for Coach Bill Curry and earned a scholarship from Coach Gene Stallings, playing on Stalling’s 1992 National Championship team at the Capstone. While at Alabama, he was named to the Academic All SEC twice and was named an SEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll Member. After graduating, he served as a graduate assistant for the University of Alabama. He then got out of coaching altogether and worked a stint in commercial real estate before being named an assistant at Clemson on the staff of Coach Tommy Bowden, who had previously been his position coach (wide receivers) at Alabama. When Bowden was fired midway through the 2008 season, Dabo Swinney was named interim head coach, and the rest, as they say, is

history. The “Fighting Dabos” as the team is sometimes called, have never looked back. Coach Paul Bear Bryant once grumbled about himself, “I ain’t never been nothin’ but a winner,” and when it comes to the game of football, Coach Swinney could certainly say the same. But he won’t, preferring to always give the credit to his players and assistant coaches; his “team,” deflecting praise away from himself. Dabo is as humble as his beginnings. A man of deep faith, instinctual talent and an old-time work ethic have propelled him from those humble beginnings into the college football stratosphere. Most recently, he matched wits and took the National Championship game down to the wire against five-time National Championship Coach Nick Saban of Alabama. Prior to that, Clemson demolished Bob Stoop’s Oklahoma Sooners as a play-in to the National Championship game (second year in a row to whip the Sooners). Something tells this writer that Coach Dabo Swinney will return to this ultimate stage again in the near future, this time with a bit more experience under his belt. Congratulations on your accomplishments this year go out to Coach Dabo Swinney; your hometown couldn’t be more proud to call you one of our own! Coach Swinney with two of his biggest fans at left: Pelham City Council President Rick Hayes and wife, Joni. Dabo and wife, Kathleen, sporting “We Are Pelham” t-shirts. The Hayes’s often travel to Clemson football games. Rick shown pregame with Dabo at far left prior to the Playoff Series Semifinal against Oklahoma.

Pelham High theatre and thespians shine at recent festivals Jamie Stephenson is the Drama teacher at Pelham High School, and her theatre students have been singin’ and dancin’ up a storm this school year—in the parking lot, the auditorium lobby, and especially at competitions. In November and December, 25 of the students attended the Walter Trumbauer Theatre Festival state competition and all received a “superior” rating, which is the highest rating possible. Many students won awards for stellar individual and group performances. Winning 1st place for their Duet Pantomime were Shaelynn Hopwood and Anna Squires. Shaelynn also won 3rd place for her Solo Pantomime. Winning 2nd place for Sound Design and 2nd place in Lighting Design was Stephanie Hernandez. Anna Smith won 3rd place in Costume Design. The group performing Laundry and Bourbon won 3rd place in Studio Theatre. Claudia Flaherty and Meredith Revel were named to the All Star Cast. Tania Alvarez received a Special Recognition for her Student Directing. Finally, Morgan Willingham was named Best Supporting Actress. In February, 15 students competed at the Alabama State Thespian Festival at Samford

University, which has a different, and harder, scoring system. Tania Alvarez won a $1000 dollar scholarship from the Alabama Educational Theatre Association! Those given Superior ratings: Donnell James for Costume Design; Stephanie Hernandez for Sound Design; Riley Taylor for Solo Musical Theatre; and Morgan Willingham, Claudia Flaherty and Meredith Revel for Monologues. Those given a rating of Excellent: Isabella Finley for Solo Musical Theatre; Caleb Bernstein and Donnell James for Duet Acting; Donnell James and Christian Goecke for Duet Acting; Riley Taylor and Lindsey Evans for a Musical Theatre Duet; and Lindsey Evans, Tania Alvarez, Maria Quintana and Hannah Walsh for Monologues. Julie Loseman, Elaina Murray and Griffin Evanko were awarded a rating of Good for Monologues. At the end of the festival, the judges choose the best performances. They included Meredith Revel, who had the opportunity to perform her Individual Event in front of the entire festival. “We are so proud of her!” Jamie said. “Our show Laundry and Bourbon was so well-received

at Trumbauer, where we were awarded 3rd place, that we were invited to perform at the Alabama Thespian Festival,” the drama teacher continued. “Morgan Willingham, Claudia Flaherty and Meredith Revel had the opportunity to perform on the Main stage of the Wright Auditorium at Samford University. Very few people, let alone high school students, can say that they have performed at the Wright Auditorium!” The troupe will also compete at the International Thespian Festival later this summer in Lincoln, Nebraska. Students performed Night of the Living Dead at PHS in October. It stood out for more reasons than the students’ great talent alone—it was performed outdoors, in one of the parking lots behind PHS, which really added to the creepiness factor.

“It has been a slower year for us due to our auditorium being under construction most of the year,” Jamie explained. “We are projected to have it back in late March. We are very excited to have our auditorium back after performing outside and in the theatre lobby.” They are now preparing for Cinderella, the PHS spring musical, which will be performed back inside the newly-renovated PHS auditorium. The show will run April 21-23 and 28-30 at 7pm each night.

The Alabama Frozen Tide beats Auburn for 6th straight Iron Cup win The Alabama Frozen Tide hockey team demolished the

Auburn Tigers in three games January 22-24 on their home ice

at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Area. More than 6,000 fans came to watch the games over that weekend, showing just how big of an economic impact that this event, and this team, has by calling Pelham home. Friday night’s game ended 9-1 Alabama, Saturday night’s 9-2 Alabama, and the boys pulled out all the stops on Sunday afternoon for a final score of 16-4 Alabama. This win in the “Hockey Iron Bowl” marks the 17th total win for ‘Bama against their biggest rivals, and their

6th sweep of the Tigers in a row. What a record! Dylan Teed, in spite of being ejected from Saturday’s game when heated words between the teams gave way to blows, was named the Iron Cup MVP. Congratulations to Head Coach Mike Quenneville, Assistant Coaches Ian Hebert and Brian Crowley, the rest of the coaching and management staff, and of course, the excellent team on three terrific and entertaining games in Pelham. Roll Tide!

RMS students get firsthand accounts of Holocaust history After reading the novels The Diary of Anne Frank, The Book Thief and the graphic novel Maus as part of the eight grade

curriculum on the Holocaust, Riverchase Middle students were able to hear first hand accounts and see pictures of the harsh realities of that time. Ms. Riva Hirsch, a

Holocaust survivor, spoke to the entire eighth grade and answered many questions about the tragedy of losing loved ones, her experiences, and finding hope in times of despair. Then, during the first week of February, the “Darkness Into

Life” exhibit was on display at the school. The traveling exhibit, provided by the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center, features stories of Alabama Holocaust survivors through photography and art.
