Allow me to also mention the success of Helena High School Athletics, where every sport in the Greetings! program enjoyed unprecedented It has been a great start to success in the AHSAA 5A State summer in the City of Helena playoffs. Husky baseball came with many rewarding events and within two games of winning a activities taking place all around State Championship, while track, town with more to come! soccer and softball went deep into Let me start by giving my the playoffs as well. This is indeed sincere congratulations and a historical year for a first year thanks to the first graduating athletic program and has indeed class of Helena High School. set the bar high for future teams, A special thanks goes out to not to mention we had the best the entire Helena High School marching band and cheerleaders administration, faculty and staff in the state! for your hard work, dedication I would also like to thank the and investment in the well being administration, staff and teachers and education of our students on a successful year at HES, HIS, and HMS where students continue to excel, filling our hearts with joy and pride. We have not forgotten that this is where it all begins. The City Youth League baseball, softball and soccer teams also enjoyed success this season at the Parks and Recreation Department. Park Director Jason Powers and Park Facilities Director Bill Miller and staff have worked hard, doing their best to make this a rewarding season for our Helena kids. In other important news, we continue to look at improvements which have been mandated by ADEM for our city’s waste water treatment facilities. Unfunded EPA & ADEM mandates are continuing to drive up costs and expenses Top: Mayor Hall at the first inaugural HHS graduation ceremony, held at the Alabama Theatre. The first senior class grew to be a remarkable and brilliant group of young men and women. The success and accomplishments of this class reaches well beyond Helena High, and has helped bring new recognition and positive attention to the City of Helena that has never before been possible. These graduates have certainly earned this community’s respect and gratitude and will always have a special place in our hearts. This success in the classroom, the performing arts, sciences, volunteer civic groups and athletics have made a noted impact and undeniable difference in this community. This group earned over 2.5 million dollars in scholarships to colleges and universities across this country including West Point and other U.S. Armed Service organizations. I would like to remind all the graduates to please remember this; no

make improvements to comply with environmental laws and regulations. An eight million dollar project, funded by a loan from the State SRF waste water treatment program, is set to begin this summer at our waste water treatment facility. We will renovate and add new processes to the operation so that the ADEM permits and regulations can be met and or exceeded. Just to note, when I first took office, I was told it would take $20 million to renovate and bring our facilities into compliance, which I refused to accept. So, for the last two years we have worked diligently with engineers and ADEM officials to reduce the cost of this project from $20 million to $8 million. I am very pleased we were able to work this project down, saving us $12 million dollars in costs by implementing changes in designs to meet our own specific needs. In closing, I would like to commend the volunteers of the Buck Creek Festival on another successful event! The festival drew thousands to Old Town. The famous Duck Race raised much needed funding for the Helena High School Band. The entire event went great! Now, don’t forget to visit First Fridays, Market Days and Movies in the Park this summer along with the big July 3rd Fireworks display and Jazz in the Park returning in July! As always, we appreciate and ask for your continued support for our local Helena businesses. May God bless you all! Please have a safe and happy summer! Kindest regards,

Mark

Helena residents’s son in the White House Stanley and Sue Kang, owners of Sunny Cleaners on CR17 with their daughter, Sunny, traveled to Washington, D.C. last month to visit their son, Lt. Commander David Kang, his wife JeeSoo, and their children, 11-year-old Dara and 5-year-old Kara. “I was really happy to see my grandchildren,” Sue said. “They said, ‘Grandmama, I want to come to Helena with you– there is more country there!’” David just celebrated his first year of working in the White House after several years working at the Pentagon. “When we were younger, all the time I thought about how to make a better life for David and Sunny,” Sue said. “We talked a long time about what he wanted to do before he went to college. We want our children to do their best in every situation.” After graduating high school, David, who Sue says is “a structural genius,” enrolled at U.C.

San Diego to study Structural Engineering for his undergraduate degree. He is following in the family tradition: Sue’s father and Stanley both practiced architecture in Korea. Stanley practiced in California as well, where he and Sue lived before making the move to Helena. “We lived in California for 18 years, but we have now lived in Helena for 21,” Stanley clarified. “We like it in Helena, the people are very kind, and this is our hometown now!” During David’s junior year at U.C. San Diego, he joined the U.S. Navy because he wanted to do more for his country. “I expect more from you, because you are American and you are in the military,” Sue told David when he made that decision, and he has not disappointed his parents in any way. With the Navy, David traveled from Japan to Puerto Rico to Hawaii and many other places.

After serving his time, he went back to California to get his Masters’ degree in Engineering at U.C. Berkeley. David became Commander Kang at the Navy Installations Command while he was the Public Works Branch Head for the Navy. He was then the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy in charge of energy. Finally, he

David’s official title is Deputy Director for Project Management, PPR, White House Military Office. “David works for God and this country; he does the best he can for his job and his life, and I am proud of him,” Sue said of her son. “He works for our benefit. I am very happy.”

You Can’t Argue With Results Joseph and Jillian Jacobs recently completed a fourweek personal training program with Jackie Droxler and are excited to share their results. Joseph took on a bet with a long-time friend as to which could become more fit by the time of their departure on a shared vacation to the Virgin Islands. “He and I go way back,” Joseph explained.“We have known each other since we played T-ball growing up together in Maryville, Tennessee. We ‘smacktalk’ each other and this exchange led to a bet between ourselves.” Joseph, who has been a SNAP member for five years and his wife, Jillian, a SNAP member for a year and a half, chose to enroll with Jackie as their personal trainer and make the best showing for this friendly competition. Joseph, over the four weeks, lost 32 pounds and 9% body fat! Jillian lost 7 pounds and 12% body fat. “We worked out together with Jackie doing individualized circuit training and fine-tuning our eating program,” the couple said. Their workout regime included a mix of aerobics, weight machines, free weights, cardio

and calisthenics (push ups and squats). To mix it up, also, Joseph worked out on the punching bag. “Jackie is so knowledgeable about the small details,” the couple added,“he can show you exactly how to grip each weight properly.” “On Jackie’s customized eating program, we were never hungry. Jackie also made himself available for any questions and concerns we had along the way.” “Our meal plan focused on protein consumption for rapid results. We appreciated the fact that Jackie will make individualized recommendations to optimize each person’s energy.” “Working out with a trainer holds you accountable and you aren’t tempted to slack off.” Joseph added that he plans to regain the weight he lost in a “clean” manner, i.e. in muscle. Jillian is a coordinator for Belk/Lancomb who travels statewide training the team and coordinating and planning events. Joseph, who served in the US AirForce, now works at Mercedes. As Joseph said, summing up the couple’s very positive experience,“You can’t argue with results!”

Helena Cumberland Presbyterian celebrates its 175th anniversary The Helena Cumberland Presbyterian Church celebrated its 175th anniversary this year on the heels of Helena's own 150th Birthday Celebration. "Interesting that the church is 25 years older than the city itself," said Pastor Mike Ensminger, explaining that early settlers to the area used the original building as a community meeting place and eventually, a school. "Helena sort of built up around the church." Hosted May 17th, the HCPC anniversary celebration was combined with the church's annual Homecoming Sunday, when former members of the congregation come home to worship. In attendance was Tommy Johnson, the HCPC pastor for 31 years before Pastor Mike took over in 2013. This year’s festivities closed with a performance by Gospel group The Master’s Men. "We've got a lot of members coming here their whole lives, who were born and raised in this church," said Mr. Ensminger, Pastor Mike's father. "Others might attend elsewhere for a while, but they come back." The original church building, built sometime in the 1850s, sat atop the hill where Harmony Cemetery is now located. When it was founded, HCPC was the first church in the area and it was called the Harmony Church. When the 1933 tornado swept through and destroyed nearly everything in Helena, Harmony Church was the first church rebuilt—downhill from the previous location. "Back when, all denominations worshipped here. Baptists and Methodists used to come to Homecoming, they attended here after the tornado," explained Mr. Ensminger, who also plays guitar in the church's praise band. The church continued to be known as Harmony Church until 1978, when members decided to change the name to Helena Cumberland Presbyterian Church to reflect their location and denomination properly.

In the 1950s, the Sunday school rooms and bathrooms were added to the back of the sanctuary. The "old Fellowship Hall," now offices, kitchens, bathrooms and hallway, was added in the ‘70s. Finally, renovations were made and the current Fellowship Hall was built in 1996. "We have ideas of building a multipurpose youth meeting place and event space behind the church in the future," Pastor Mike said. "Renovating the kitchen was necessary first, though—all of our fellowship surrounds food," he noted, laughing. "But people are comfortable talking around the dinner table, and we want to make everyone comfortable. We're a laid-back congregation and church." Music Director Jan Broadhead agreed. "But we know the purpose that we're here for," she stated. "We are a very missionminded church." Their missions include a bi-yearly outdoor crafts bazaar of local and regional artists held each April and October in the church parking lot. "Proceeds from that event, all of it, goes to missions in Helena," Pastor Mike said. "It gives us the opportunity to let the community know we're here for them. To talk to them, for fellowship or even just a hug. It's a great chance to minister without going door-to-door." Each summer, church leaders and volunteers host Vacation Bible School for Helena's children, and each year, the kids look forward to Mrs. Kitty's puppets. An upbeat and enthusiastic Kitty Ensminger, Mike's mother, complete with her light Scottish brogue, is the whimsical voice that lends character to her array of puppets during VBS. "Kids we see our in the community will ask us about the puppets over the course of the year," Pastor Mike added. "And she's always trying to one-up me in our services. It's a friendly competition, but she has me beat with her puppets."

A little sweat is good for all of us. “When you are out visiting any of our Parks and Sports Facilities, please become a part of our ‘1-A-Day Initiative.’ Just imagine how clean our parks, streets and neighborhoods would be if we all picked up our trash plus at least one extra piece of trash per day and disposed of it accordingly. It takes little to no effort to participate and all of us can do our part to keep your parks and facilities cleaner, from our kids to our seniors.” Youth Baseball and girls softball wrapped up in late May and Helena crowned some excellent championship teams. The spring baseball league consisted of 30 teams, starting with tee-ballers up through 18-year-old young adults. The HHS baseball team had an extraordinary season this year with a record of 27-20. They took it all the way to the state championship series for Division 5A. Congratulations to Coach PJ Guy, his staff and all the players. Thanks to the Diamond Dolls, parents, boosters and all those who came out to support our Helena Huskies this year! The future looks very bright!

HELENA HUSKIES BASEBALL

First year of sports for HHS highly promising, speaks to bright future Fall Sports Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Watt Parker led the Huskies through their first highly successful season. This inaugural football team made it to the first round of the playoffs. Track Coaches Jon Ray Russell and Charles Sparks are also thrilled with their students’ performances this year. The Girls’ Cross-Country team ended the year as 5A Section 2 Champs and finished 5th overall at the state meet. The Boys’ Cross-Country team ended the year as 5A Section 2 runners-up and finished 5th overall at the state meet. The Girls Varsity Soccer, lead by coach Cliff Naron, made it to the first round of the playoffs. The Boys’ Varsity soccer team finished 3rd in the State! Phildon Dublin was chosen as HHS Representative for the AHSAA North vs South Allstar Soccer Game this July because of how he helped lead the Huskies to the 4A-5A Final Four. He, along with Matt Sheets, Alex Owens and Yeltsin Canales also made the 2015 Boys All Metro Bham Honorable Mention Team. The Girls’ Volleyball team also had a smashing first season, becoming area champs and making it to the super-regionals.

Winter Sports One Helena swimmer qualified for the state swim meet in the 50-meter freestyle. Six HHS wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling tournament. The Boys’ Basketball team, lead by Coach Chris Laatsch, made it to the subregionals. Spring Sports The Varsity Baseball team entered the state playoffs with a record of 18-15, but pulled off an unbelievable comeback, beginning with back-to-back wins over No. 2 St. Paul’s to advance. Shelby County Baseball Coach of the Year PJ Guy took his team in its first season and led them to the State Championship Series in Montgomery last month, where they fell to a strong team from Russellville. Their final record was 27-20. With a lot of young players on this team, and an up-and-coming 9th grade baseball team who became the metro area champs, we can’t wait to see the Huskies as they compete for titles in the years to come. The HHS Varsity Softball team were area champions and made it to the second round of regional play, to the superregionals, thanks in part to great coaching by Heidi Kouveras. We can’t wait to see the lady Huskies

get better and better. Girls’ Golf Coach Stephen Shivers is proud to report that golf phenom Grayson Gladden was the runner-up at this year’s state tournament at Magolia Grove, and the team as a whole only missed going to the state competition by one stroke. “Next year is extremely promising, there is no limit to the success we can achieve with every player returning,” Coach Shivers said. “The fact that we got as far as we did in our first year is phenomenal. The chance to compete makes it enticing—we pulled a nice play in a beautiful place. I’m very proud of them, and I expect us to compete at state next year.” Coach Michael Morgan is a first year men’s golf coach for HHS and has also done an excellent job. The Mens’ Golf Team came in 2nd place at Substate at the Country Club of Mobile which qualified them for State. They came in fourth place for the state title, and we can’t wait to see them get even further next year. Coach Jason Ford led Boys’ Tennis to a win in the region, and Coach Stephanie White lead Girls’ Tennis to be runners-up in their region. While both teams fell in the first round of state,

we know they have set a solid foundation for the Huskies in the future. The Girls’ Indoor Track team finished 7th overall in the state, and the Boys’ Indoor Track Team team finished 12th overall in the state. Girls’ Outdoor Track finished 3rd at the Shelby County Championships and the Boys’ Outdoor Track finished 3rd at the Shelby County Championships, allowing both teams to advance to state. The HHS Majorettes even brought home three first place wins from competition in Wetumpka this spring. “The kids really, really played hard this year,” said Athletic Director Parker. “It takes the parents, the school, the coaches and the athletes working hard together to keep a good balance between athletics and academics, and that’s what you have here. Making students into young men and women of high character.” “We appreciate the support of Mayor Hall and the city, without them none of this would have happened,” he continued. “And we also thank the Helena Athletic Association for all it has done so much this year to support all of our programs.”

Celia Ingram retires from teaching at HIS

Celia Ingram with Ken Ard

Celia Ingram has been teaching fifth graders in Helena for twenty years—six at HES, and then at HIS for the past 14. “Ever since my second year here, I have teamed up with Ken Ard’s class. It’s been the Ard-Ingram Team the whole way,” Mrs. Ingram said. One of her favorite memories at HIS is performing karaoke in a school talent

show with Mr. Ard and herself dressed as Sonny and Cher. “So I don’t know what I’m going to do without my team and my friend.” She will have to figure it out, though, because as of June 1, Mrs. Ingram is retired from teaching. She made the decision after months of prayer, thought, and family discussions. “I will miss learning from Helena students every day, the excitement over the new school year each August, collaborating with the other 5th grade teachers at HIS and sponsoring the Day Starters Bible Study,” she said. “And I’ll really miss the lunchla-

dies and custodians—they are the backbone of the school.” As if on cue, custodian Lula Dunaway stuck her head in to the classroom to say hello. “We love Celia and she loves us, and the kids love her too—we see them coming back all the time to visit her,” Lula said. “I love these children,” Mrs. Ingram asserted. “In fifth grade, students have such good hearts. They are developing emotional parts of their being, and we have so much influence on them. I will miss them the most.” Mrs. Ingram has lived in Helena since 1978, spending the past 45 years with her husband Doug and their two children. Their son Nathan and his wife Moni have two children, Micah Joy and Melody Grace. Their daughter Natalie and her husband Buddy Dabney have three children: Joseph, Julia and Jonathan. Mrs. Ingram plans on

spending plenty of time in her retirement with her children and grandchildren. “I give thanks to my family for loving me and sacrificing their time on me,” she said humbly. “Thanks to the administration and faculty of HIS, and the unfailing love and power of Jesus Christ as well, for guiding me all these years.” “Teaching has to be a gift from God, and I’ve learned to do everything as a servant of the Lord,” Mrs. Ingram said. She went back to school at the University of Montevallo to become a teacher at age 45, really proving that “It’s never too late to do what God wants you to do.” The advice Mrs. Ingram wants to give everyone is to listen more, talk less, and always be grateful for what you have. “You will learn so much when you live that way,” she explained. Happy retirement, Mrs. Ingram!

Helena Founder’s Day 150 years ago, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad company sent Pete Boyle, a company engineer, to survey land in the area that is now Helena, Alabama. After surveying the land, L and N built the “Helena Station,” which was named after Boyle’s sweetheart, Helen Lee. Helena’s 150th Birthday Celebration, and First Annual Founder’s Day, was a huge hit! Hosted April 18 in the Helena Sports Complex, this historic event included a skit from our founders, Helen Lee and Peter Boyle (seen far right on the opposite page), a talk with local historian Dr. James Day, inflatables for kids, performances from the Helena High School choir and show choir, local bands

Sparetime, the Jeremy Moore Band and Thomas Trussell, as well as art contests and door prizes. And of course, our lovely city ambassadors, the Helena Belles, were present as well as Helena City Councilman and blogger Hal Woodman, who served as the dapper emcee. This event brought the community together to celebrate the naming of Helena, raised funds for the Helena Museum and the Helena Historic Preservation Committee, and brought awareness to the city’s rich history. Thanks to Charity Miller, the Helena Historic Preservation Committee and volunteers who helped make the event possible, and thanks to all who attended for making it so fun!

Helena High School buries time capsule to be opened in 25 years On May 20, the Helena High School SGA, administration and study body watched as a time capsule representing the first year in the life of the school was buried in the courtyard of the school. According to Mrs. Cissy Johnson, SGA sponsor, after talking with the officers, the idea came up and was thought to be a great way to commemorate and remember the inaugural year of Helena High School. They chose the courtyard because they felt the courtyard would be a nice place and also a place where they could make certain the time capsule remains secure and protected. Principal April Brand contacted the necessary personnel to determine where irrigation lines were located and then some of the custodial staff dug the hole. The SGA worked together with faculty and students to find things that represented this

school year. Some of the things included in the time capsule were rosters of the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes; sports t-shirts for baseball, volleyball, basketball, soccer. There was also a baseball hat, a tennis ball, photo of the softball area tournament team, a signed football from the first win of the season, and a list of all the sports teams that represented the school in area playoffs. Many of the departments also contributed various items such as band, choir, homecoming, science t-shirts. The band contributed several DVDs from the programs this year along with a winterguard medal when the team won state champions and regional champions. The foreign language department donated some letterhead with their logo on it while the art department contributed a paint brush.

Also included to document this year were a yearbook, literary magazine, senior DVD, a graduation tassel, program from graduation, senior class photo, 2015 faculty photo, Miss HHS photo and program, an HHS shaker and a student agenda. Helena Mayor Mark Hall donated a variety of city items to include in the capsule. The organizers also added a copy of one of the first Helena City News magazines from this year along with a Sports Illustrated magazine, a social media screenshot, the special education prom banner and a lunch menu. To finish out the time capsule, a copy of the original alma mater for Helena High School was included. The time capsule was purchased by this year’s SGA officers (Kendal Featherstone, Casey Pierce, Reed Henderson and Todd Millsap). It is a 14x14

metal, custom welded container. Each item is sealed in a special bag or sleeve to help protect the item. The container is then sealed for added moisture protection. An engraved plaque will be placed at the site. The plan is to open the Helena High School time capsule 25 years from now to see how things have changed with the school and student body.

Residential Beautification Award— “Mr. Ken’s” house in the Falliston subdivision ing roses; nearby Confederate Jasmine arches over a screen. Statuary, a sundial and a whimsical plow planter are woven among the beds. Mr. Ken began his remodeling and yard work early on Saturday morning and kept steady until dark. “Those other guys can go fishing and hunting, but I will have something that can be seen longer,” he said. Before moving to Helena, Mr. Ken and his wife, Frances, lived in West End, then in Hueytown and along the way his sales career blossomed, before eventually retiring from Waltech American Fortune. After retiring, he also enjoyed his harmonicas—collecting many and teaching himself to play hymns that he found meaningful—sharing those at times with the congregation at Shades Mountain Baptist Church.

Our beautification award honors a 20-year resident of Helena, Kenneth Ray Logan, known to many as “Mr. Ken” and a familiar face at True Value (formerly ACE) Hardware. This inviting landscape with it’s various scalloped-edge brick paths and planted beds, lattice arbor and gazebo has been a favorite setting for many family

photos over the years. Mr. Ken designed and built these wooden structures, including the swing nestled under a pear tree, after first adding needed drainage to the back yard and a deck on the back of the house. The deck overlooks a bank of mature Knock-out roses and Crape Myrtles. The front of the house is anchored by striking Emerald Green Arborvitae and purple loropetalum and intermingled are bright green Nandina and assorted perennials—daylilies, hostas, hydrangeas and liriope. One of the earliest curvilinear beds became home to a large three-tiered fountain surrounded by roses. It has since been converted into a planter with marigolds and other annuals adding seasonal color. Seating is provided in the gazebo now covered with climb-

In Helena he served on the Board of Adjustments in 2006. It was then-Mayor Penhale who suggested he apply at the soon-to-open Helena hardware store. He began his job there on opening day. Mr. Ken, who hails originally from a two-room log cabin in Paw Creek, NC, met Miss Frances at the (old) Hunter Street Baptist Church. A friend suggested that she “check him out” as many men at that time were then away in Korean War service. They were married in 1953. They became parents to Debbie, Sharon and Nicki and have six grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren as well as three wonderful son-in-laws! Mr. Ken is honored as the Father of Falliston by the neighborhood who returns the care and love he shared with them all. The MaxCare Van is a Sign that CLEAN is on the way!

Helena Kiwanis present scholarship to Brianna Farley

Brianna Farley, center, poses with Gene Maier on the left and Kiwanis Club of Helena President Luther Jarmon on the right as she accepts the college scholarship the club presented to her in April.

The Kiwanis Club of Helena recently presented

Brianna Farley, a Helena resident, member of the Key

Club and a senior at Evangel Christian School, with a $1500 scholarship. Board member Gene Maier introduced Farley at a Kiwanis meeting, saying, “I have known you for several years and I have seen you grow in your leadership skills.” “Leadership skills are special and your ability to involve others in meeting your goals is what I have seen over the past years,” he continued. “Your peers recognized this by electing you to be their Lt. Govenor of Division 10,

then your peers at the district level elected you to be District Secretary.” Those present when Brianna accepted her scholarship included her parents Mack and Christy Farley and sister, Bethany. Her father, Mack, is the new Key Club sponsor at Evangel Christian. The money for this scholarship each year comes from funds raised at the annual Kiwanis Club of Helena Pancake Day hosted at HES, as well as money from the Buck Creek Festival.

HHS band graduates talented kids The Helena High School band had a great first year of its program, especially considering only 22 students were seniors out of the 190 students making up the band. "We have been very fortunate with the band program," Director of Bands Jeff Burnside said. "A very large percentage of our seniors will continue what they do in band with they leave high school, and the kids in this area have done a good job carrying on in college." Senior Alex King won a band scholarship to Auburn and was awarded the $1,000 Shelby County Outstanding Senior Music Scholarship at the Shelby County All-County Honor Band in February. Nick LeSueur won a band scholarship

to University of North Alabama. Cameron Fortson joined the Marine system of band, which will put him through boot camp before sending him to music school. Sarah Folsom has joined the limited ranks of the Troy Majorettes. Shawn Hicks will play with the band at Auburn University starting in the fall. "We have a lot of other students graduating who will get paid to participate in bands and other auxiliary groups on their college campuses," Director Burnside said. He expects enrollment at HHS will rise in the next couple years as the band continues to build its program, and we can't wait to see how talented next year’s Helena students will be.

HMS students win essay contest The Cahaba Valley Elks Lodge is pleased to announce that Helena Middle School was recognized for having two students to win state recognition in the annual Americanism Essay Contest. This year’s theme was “What the Pledge of Allegiance Means to Me.” Helena Middle School 7th grader Lauren Murphy from Mark Sanders’ social studies class was awarded 1st Place in Alabama’s Division II for 7th and 8th grades. In the 6th grade, Skylar Stark in Alan Wilson’s social studies class received in Alabama’s

Division I for 5th and 6th Graders, Honorable Mention. This annual contest sponsored by the Elks is available to all 5-8th grade students and competition can be challenging. This year the Lodge received and judged over 1200 essays. The judges selected grade winners for each participating school to be submitted to the state level of the completion. State winners will progress to the national level to compete against other winning essays across the nation. These national winners will be announced in July.

Next thing you know, you're waking up in a hospital. For former Helena Belle President Lillie Gaston, this nightmare became her life. On November 7, 2014, a few friends picked her up from Publix and the group traveled to take another friend home. As their Hundai Genesis Coop merged onto I-65, they were hit from behind by a truck carrying a trailer. The force of the impact sent the car flying into the vehicle in front of them as well. Lillie only knows what happened from her friends' stories—she doesn't remember anything about the accident. "They tell me I was conscious when paramedics reached the scene, but I wasn't really there," she explained. "I remember going down the exit to the interstate, then waking up in UAB hospital with immense pain in my face." During the crash, Lillie was

She received the flipper in March and is very grateful to be able to smile with confidence once again. thrown into the right interior of the car, breaking all of her teeth on the right side. Then, she fell chin-first into the headrest in front of her, which shattered her mandible. She still considers herself lucky, though: "If I had been sitting behind the driver, I would have been killed," she said. The extent of her injuries proved to be too much for the UAB doctor on-call that Friday night, so Lillie stayed in the hospital until the following Tuesday, when Dr. John Grant III, Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Surgery at Children's of Alabama, could perform the first of what may eventually be more than seven surgeries on her mouth and jaw. This first sixhour surgery entailed placing five titanium plates in her jaw: one on the left side, two in her chin and two on the right side. Dr. Grant then attached arch bars to her teeth, wiring her mouth shut for six weeks. "I lost my front three teeth, my

"I will never again take for granted someone telling me I have a beautiful smile." gums were eroding, and the front of my jaw is also gone," Lillie explained, pulling a “flipper,” a modified retainer with prosthetic teeth that she received in March, from the front of her mouth. "I will have skin graft, chin implant and bone graft surgeries over the next three years based on my healing," she said. Following the first surgery, she was able to go home on Novem-

ber 14. Unfortunately, after a few weeks at home, she was moved to Children's Hospital for three emergency procedures with Dr. Grant, beginning December 5. Before they could start the second surgery, they inserted straws to drain an infection she said had overtaken her entire head. Draining took more than two hours, and they left the straws in her throat, protruding out of her neck, until her third surgery, in case the infection persisted. During this time, Lillie was on so many steroids that she said, "I went through a sense of not being able to handle my emotions."

She was happy, though, on December 23, for the procedure to take off the arch bars, wire and remove the straws. Unfortunately, the infection persisted. For that reason, a fourth surgery to remove four of the titanium plates in her jaw took place the very next day, on Christmas Eve. "The plates were too loose, and they were irritating the soft tissue, which caused the infection," Lillie explained. Dr. Grant referred her to UAB oral maxilloofacial surgeon Dr. Peter Waite for their removal. "He put in five screws to wire my jaw shut again," Lillie said, ruefully. "At least these came out on time, six weeks later." She was thankful to be able to go home Christmas day, but she does not care to go back to the Carnation Instant Breakfast diet she unfortunately had to take back up instead of Christmas dinner. "Dr. Waite accidentally tapped a nerve on the left side of my jaw, and I lost feeling and the ability to blink on that side for five months before it all came back," she related. "One day, they read a blood test wrong and showed all my vitals had to be severely low, so they injused my veins with potassium. It was the most torturous thing I ever felt, like fire in my veins," she described Almost worst of all were the looks when she first started going out again. "People would look at

me, I was so skinny you could see my ribs, my hair was up because I couldn't wash it, my front teeth were missing— I had to look like a crackhead." Stories like these give a more complete picture of her struggles, which continue even now. Issues with TMJ and her teeth may mean more surgeries later on in life—she already knows future dental work will include several root canals and caps for her molars. "I will have to wear braces, again, for two years once all this is done," she sighed. "I've had good experiences with surgery and stuff, but I will hate dentists for the rest of my life," she admitted. "And I will never again take for granted someone telling me I have a beautiful smile." But as much as she has gone through and will continue to go through, Lillie remains upbeat. "If you keep a good attitude; things will go smoothly," she said, and her demeanor exudes this mantra. After everything she has been through in the past six months, a less-than-cavalier attitude would surprise no one. Instead, she continually surprises friends and family with her positive outlook. "I'm fine," she said. "I'm not well, but I know I'm going to get through it." A large part of Lillie's attitude positivity comes from the support she has felt from her family, church, friends and the Helena

Belles. "My mom has been the best caretaker. My spirits got so low, but she would lift me up," Lillie said. The Helena United Methodist women's prayer group brought the food and well-wishes from the congregation, and took back news of Lillie's health. "The Belles came to check on

me, see how I was doing and ask what I needed," she said. Going forward, Lillie wants to make sure more people know about the Health App for iPhone. The app, which features an icon with a little red heart, now comes pre-programmed on iPhones 5 and up. "Everyone should put their medical ID in this app," Lillie said. Your name, blood type, allergies, past surgeries and other possible medical concerns are stored in the app. On a phone's lock screen, pressing the Emergency button will bring up the owner's Medical ID. "Even in the case of a bad accident, where the person is unrecognizable and can't speak, paramedics can have access to this valuable information," Lillie explained. "I wish I had been using it at the time of my accident. It will save lives!"

Tammy Genry presented Owens-Young Memorial technology innovation award This year’s winners of the Shelby County Schools OwensYoung Memorial Technology Innovation Award were announced during the Shelby County Board of Education Meeting April 23. The award recognizes teachers who excel at using technology to improve teaching and learning. It was first awarded last year, but will now be given annually in order to promote leadership in the area of 21st Century teaching. The award honors two former employees whose work paved the way for teachers to use technology in the classroom. Denise Owens, who taught in Shelby County Schools for 22 years, became one of the District’s first Technology Resource Teachers in 1998. Her work helped hundreds of teachers to design innovative lesson plans using a wide range of technology. Mrs. Owens,

the wife of former District Attorney Robby Owens, retired in 2000 and passed away in 2007. Michael Young, a computer programmer who came to work for Shelby County Schools in 2007 as a network technician, also made an impact in the classroom by providing outstanding technical support to teachers and students. “Denise and Michael contributed greatly to our technology program. We’re happy to establish this award to recognize their past contributions, the hard work our teachers put into being 21st Century educators, and the teamwork that success in this arena takes,” said Technology Coordinator Susan Poling last year when the award was first established. This year’s winners were Tami Genry, Helena Intermediate School; Danny DuBose, Oak

Mountain High School; Krystal Lawrence, Shelby Elementary School; and Ashli Polizios, Oak Mountain Middle School. “One thing that these award winners have in common is that they share with fellow faculty members,” said Poling. “Their success is breeding success in others.” Tami Genry serves as the library media specialist and local school technology coordinator at Helena Intermediate. Genry is

constantly helping students utilize technology in ways that help them learn all subjects and get more from their school experience. She designs activities for students using technology that is fun, but also challenges them to do their best research first and then design a great product that reveals what they have learned. She also works with every teacher in the school to help them integrate technology into their class activities.

In the article about Mary Wilson in our last edition, we erroneously stated she had received a doctorate. That is incorrect, only her husband Henry was a doctor. And while Henry was a professor at Mississippi Southern, Mary was a professor at Ole Miss. The pair have six grandchildren, not three: Nicholas Gulas, Maria Gulas, Alexa Smith, Nickolas Smith, Katie Wilson and Haley Cullums. Haley and her husband just had their daughter, Amelia Cullums, in May, making Mary a proud great-grandmother for the first time. Congratulations to Mary and all she has accomplished, and for raising such a wonderful family. Our apologies.

With Helena High School ’ s Inaugural Class of 2015

Each year, the Senior Counselor and staff will select six Helena High School seniors that embody the traits that make them optimal representatives of their graduating class as well as their community. The following students share their favorite HHS memories and future plans. The day has finally arrived, and we want to commend each and every graduate on this major milestone—earning their high school diploma. Most importantly, we wish the Class of 2015 a future filled with happiness, good health and much success! Our (graduation) caps are off to you—Helena High School Class of 2015! Ashlyn Coats (daughter of Bobby and Wendy Coats): “Homecoming week was so much fun for me. There were so many firsts, like the Powder Puff flag football game, Homecoming Court, and the Homecoming game and dance themselves.” Ashlyn’s favorite teachers at HHS was Ms. Lisa Essman. “She was always so encouraging and uplifting, and I simply enjoyed her class.” There are many influential people in Ashlyn’s life, but she says Jessica Barr made a real impact on her life this year. “Jessica is a junior at HHS, and she is always uplifting and encouraging me in my faith.” Ashlyn plans to attend the University of Alabama to pursue a degree in Speech and Language Pathology, with a desire to work with special needs children in early intervention. “In twenty years, I hope I am finished with graduate school and working as a speech and language pathologist. I also hope I am married with kids.” Allie Fain (daughter of Billy and Kimberly Fain): “My favorite memory at HHS would have to be Spirit Week. It was so much fun getting to participate in class competitions all week long and watch our Helena Huskies win the first ever Homecoming game.” Allie’s favorite teacher is also Ms. Lisa Essman. “She has such an optimistic attitude and is always encouraging her students to live up to their full potential.” The most influential person in Allie’s life is her mom: “She always helps me in any way she can, she gives the best advice and I would not be were I am today without her.” Allie will attend Auburn University in the fall, where she plans to major in Nursing. “After earning my degree, I plan to become a Neonatal Nurse and work in the NICU at a hospital.” In twenty years, Allie says, “I see myself living in a house on the water with my family, still working as a Neonatal Nurse. Hopefully I will be well-traveled by this stage in my life!” Aaron McIver (son of Anthony McIver): “Getting a standing ovation at Awards Day is right at the top of my list of favorite HHS memories! All the Peer Helper Events were fun, and hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer against Central Tuscaloosa was also cool.” Aaron’s favorite teacher at HHS is definitely Mrs. Culver. “I had her twice for English and Debate. She’s a very understanding, fun person to talk to and she lets me use her microwave! She’s the best.” He says his parents are the biggest influence on his life. “They push me way harder than most parents. They taught me how God, respect, and hard work lead to endless opportunities. They have influenced me to be a good person and bless others when possible.” In March, Aaron received his Certificate of Appointment to West Point United States Military Academy in New York. “There, I will attain a degree in Economics, and commission as an Army Officer upon graduation. After five years, I’ll leave for a good finance or business job, and begin working on my Masters degree.” In twenty years, Aaron sees himself living in San Fransisco and working as a Financial Manager. “I will have a wife, two kids, and house just outside the city on a bunch of land with four dogs. I would like to minister to teens, as well, blessing them as I have been blessed.”

Casey Pierce (son of Chris and Ginger Pierce): Casey’s favorite memories at HHS are when the cross-country team made it to the state competition, and when the basketball team made it to the sub-regionals. “Both experiences led me to great coaches and friends that will last me a lifetime.” Casey’s favorite teacher at HHS was Mrs. Adams, his Student Government Advisor. “She always has a smile on her face and is someone I could always talk to no matter when it was.” Casey says his parents are definitely the most influential people in his life. “They have always cared, supported and had unconditional love for me since day one. They are there to help guide me through life, and I can’t thank them enough for all they do.” Casey will attend UAB Honors College in the fall, where he will major in chemistry and biology. “I hope to apply to Medical School afterwards, to become a specialist doctor and help out others in need.” In twenty years, Casey sees himself graduated from medical school. “I will be in the prime of my career as a physician, helping others as much as possible. A great family with a loving wife and a dog or two are all in my vision for the future.” Marianne Theodore (daughter of George Theodore and Zona Theodore): Marianne’s favorite memories at HHS include going on field trips with the Special Education students. “The trips were so much fun and I love seeing them happy!” Her favorite teacher at HHS is Ms. Melissa Baswell of the Special Education Department. “She is always there for me and has inspired me to follow my dreams.” Marianne’s mother, Zona Theodore, in the most influential person in her life. “She loves me no matter what and is always by y side. She pushes me to do my best and is there to catch me when I fall.” Marianne will attend the University of Alabama in the fall, majoring in Special Education. “I want to become a Special Ed teacher and change as many students’ lives as I can. I hope to be the best teacher I can be.” In twenty years, Marianne hopes to be happily married with 3-4 kids. “I hope to help build Special Education programs up and make them better for students with disabilities, and to be the best Special Ed teacher in Alabama.” Michalyn Worthy (daughter of Sharon and Mike Worthy): “My favorite memory at HHS is the first football game. As the dance team captain, I lead my team to march into a stadium packed with people as the drums roared behind us!” Michalyn’s favorite teacher is also Ms. Lisa Essman. “She is such a kind, caring and patient woman. She is very passionate about literature and loves getting to know her students.” The most influential person in Michalyn’s life is her dad. “He is such a loving, supporting man of Christ. I can always to go him with questions about the Bible and any situation I face.” This fall, Michalyn will attend the University of Alabama and begin her major in nursing. She wants to become very involved in a church and the community of Tuscaloosa, and is very excited for football games and cheering on the Tide as a student! “In the future, I see myself helping others and witnessing to others with my nursing degree. I also want to use my degree for medical mission trip so I can save people physically and spiritually, wherever God leads me.
