FROM THE MAYOR

Greetings! I hope this letter finds you well and you are having a great start to Fall! There are so many great things happening in Helena this time of year with our schools and civic events. Speaking of events, it’s great to see the Farmer’s Market has extended operations for the first ever Fall Market Days at the Old Town Amphitheatre Park. Thanks to all the great volunteers and vendors that make this such a terrific market, it truly is the best of the best. The City Youth League’s fall sports are well underway at the Parks and Recreation Department. The new parking lot at the Sports Complex is complete and the bid process for the new youth soccer field should be approved by the City Council shortly so that ground work can begin. This will be a great and much needed addition for our growing youth

soccer league. Happy to see that the new Waffle House is about ready to open, bringing a new flavor to Helena that will help keep some of the much needed tax dollars here in our city. We will continue to look for more retail opportunities to boost our economy and add jobs to our community. Waffle House is certainly a great addition for us. I would also like to welcome another great new shop to Helena called The Trading Boutique. They held a grand opening recently at the new location which is in the shops next to Golden Rule BBQ. We also look forward to celebrating a new endeavor with the wonderful folks at Griffin Farms as they kick off their exciting new venue called “The Patch,” which will feature a pumpkin patch and fun, family-oriented fall activities for everyone. They are set to be open October 1st. I am very pleased that utility line relocations are complete for the planned turn lane additions at County 52 and County 13. I have been informed by Shelby County Commissioner Elwyn Bearden that the project has received final approvals and the

actual lane addition should begin in November and continue until completed. Lastly, a big thanks to all our hard working City Council members for their dedication and support as we work to pass a balanced budget for 2017-2018. We expect to pass the budget before October 1. Highlights include giving a 3 percent pay raise to all full time employees

and allot funding to replace some aging equipment for various departments. We will also add an additional Firefighter/ Paramedic for our Fire Department to help increase manpower there. I am very thankful for the hard work of the council and the department heads for making sure we have a workable and balanced budget going forward into 2018 so that we can maintain and improve services for our fine citizens. Please remember to support our local businesses, and shop Helena First! Please have a safe and great Fall, and I hope to see you at Husky Stadium on Friday nights! Best Wishes,

Mark Mark

September brought about Gynecological Cancer Awareness Joy Peterson presented a poster proclaiming September as Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month at the late August City Council Meeting. Ms. Peterson is a 12-year survivor of GYN cancer which affects more women than any other. So if you noticed extra touches of teal around town in September, be reminded that research is needed to defeat this deadly menace. In the last issue, we listed the wrong winner of the Judge’s Choice Award. The correct Judge’s Choice Award winner was Driveway Boyz BBQ. Our apologies for the error/

Taking Beauty to the Next Level— Dr. Denny Offers Botox® and other Cosmetic Treatments

By Dr. Priscila Denny

Priscila Denny, D.M.D., M.S.

Softens Wrinkles and Expression Lines ®

Over the last twelve years, Dr. Priscila Denny of Oak Mountain Orthodontics has become an established member of the North Shelby community, providing children and parents of Helena, Pelham and Hoover with braces and beautiful smiles that last a lifetime. Recently there has been an expansion in the services many doctors provide to their patients, in all types and forms of medical fields (e.g. internal medicine doctors providing weight-loss treatment or in-office pharmacies). Dr. Denny expanded her services a few years ago when she began providing laser teeth whitening, as well as braces, to her patients. While Dr. Denny is an expert in producing Hollywood Smiles via braces and laser whitening, she is now offering Botox® and Derma Fill injections to help you reach the next level of beauty. Dr. Denny said, “We see these services as natural progression.” Her family has a long history of providing a wide range of cosmetic services to complement beautiful smiles. “Years ago, my brother was the first provider of Botox in his city, and my sister and brother-in-law travel the world teaching medical courses on the proper method for optimal cosmetic injection outcomes. My sister and her husband have taught hundreds of doctors, including me, how to do these injections both safely and professionally.” Dr. Denny explains that there are many reasons these type of injections are a natural fit for an orthodontic practice. “One aspect of orthodontic learning that most people aren’t aware of, is that you study the scientific and historical standards of beauty,” she said. “There are certain physical signals your face sends to others based on the relationship between the various features on your face. Orthodontists study how the alignment of your teeth affect those features. Understanding that relationship is also key to

understanding how Botox and other injections can give you an optimal youthful appearance.” Dr. Denny studied at UAB with one of the leading oral maxillofacial surgeons in the nation. “As part of our course of study, at UAB we discussed how orthodontists have a unique skill set and training that makes them a natural choice to provide Botox and other kinds of cosmetic treatment.” • Orthodontists are doctors trained to do complex non-sedation procedures. • Orthodontists understand smile architecture and the traditional proportions for facial beauty. • Orthodontists have specialized training with needles and attention to facial details. • Orthodontists are trained to have precise dexterity. Furthermore, Botox injections are used in the treatment of other problems that relate directly to orthodontics such as jaw issues including TMJ problems. Another fact many people are not aware of is that even though Botox injections wear off after several months, the benefits can be long-lasting because the injections prevent the forming or deepening of new wrinkles for as long as the effects of the Botox last. “We are providing treatment to both men and women, but being a woman, I understand the desire some will have to keep a procedure such as this discreet,” Dr. Denny said. “Some people don’t want anyone to know they have had the procedure done.” “We have two offices, one in Helena and one in Pelham, and we will offer special appointment times for our Botox® patients and accommodate them at the office of their choosing. Offering this service is something we have given a lot of thought to and something we are providing in both a convenient yet discreet manner.” To find out more, call 682-7488 and speak to Lauren about how you can start looking your absolute best today!

City of Helena and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Partner for Rose Trial The City of Helena and the Helena Beautification Board are excited to partner with Texas A&M University AgriLife Extension to complete a full EarthKind™ Rose Confirmational Trial. On October 14, 2017, the Helena Beautification Board will host a ground-breaking ceremony to officially open the trial and to plant some 78 rose shrubs from 24 cultivars as a part of the EarthKind™ Rose Trial for the City of Helena, Alabama. “The Helena Earth Kind trials mark a significant investment in the future of garden roses across the United States,” said Chris VanCleave, a nationally known rose expert and current Chairman of the Helena Beautification Board. “People want beautiful roses in their gardens to enhance the beauty of their yards and enrich their lives. What they don’t want are roses that require a lot of care and upkeep. This rose trial

is a first step toward identifying cultivars that provide a beautiful garden presence, are disease resistant and drought and pest tolerant.” said VanCleave. Mr. VanCleave and Vice Chairman Brian Puckett were instrumental in bringing a research trial of this magnitude to Helena and we were proud to partner with Texas A&M to bring this horticultural trial to Helena, said Helena Mayor Mark Hall. “This trial is conducted in less than perfect growing conditions on purpose” says Vice Chairman, Brian Puckett. “The roses will be planted, watered in for the first season and then left to their own devices. We will monitor and evaluate per the rigorous guidelines set for us by our partners at Texas A&M. It’s this trial by fire that will reveal those ‘tough as nails’ cultivars that could ultimately join the list of other roses that have become Earth Kind

roses. The need to offer environmentally responsible plants is growing, and the AgriLife program at Texas A&M, under the direction of Dr. Steve George, has conducted years of field research and evaluation that have now set the standard for how these types of trials are conducted. We are proud to be a part of this effort.” said Puckett. The trial grounds are located along the drive leading up to the Helena Sports Complex. As the trial progresses and the roses begin to bloom, the board plans to schedule events at varying

intervals to celebrate the success of the trials.

Helena Parks & Recreation in gear for fall sports Park Director Bill Miller says the city recently spent approximately $85,000 adding an additional 115 parking spaces outside the Helena Community Center, which serves as a multipurpose facility for the city. It’s where residents vote, have an indoor walking track, an indoor basketball court as well as meeting and banquet facilities available for rent to residents and businesses. It also serves as home to the Helena Business Association’s annual business expo, so the additional parking will be put to good use. The walking track is available to residents Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm. Lilly Clayton is the Events Coordinator for the facility, and you can call her to make reservations for any of the facility’s amenities at 620-2877. Youth football is now underway with 120 young athletes signed up to play. The Huskies field a 3rd, 4th, 5th and two 6th grade teams this season and play in an interlocking league with Pelham, Alabaster, Cahaba

Valley (Briarwood), Vestavia, Hoover, Oak Mountain, Spain Park, Chelsea, Trussville and Homewood. There were 109 cheerleaders signed up for this season, serving girls from 1st through 6th Grades. September 25 marks the start of our Fall Ball league of baseball and softball. We have 140 boys who will compete in Dizzy Dean this year for ages 3-12 and 90 girls who compete in USSSA for girls ages 5-16. “The 3-4 year old team is actually coed serving both boys and girls,” said Bill. The end of September also marks the start of youth soccer in Helena. There are 180 youth competing this season. Plans are for the city to begin construction this fall, weather permitting, on a new dedicated soccer field which soccer enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating. Youth basketball registration begins mid-October online at: helenaparkandrec.org. Keep an eye on this Park and Rec website for the latest news and updates.

The sixth grade football team takes on Cahaba Valley above with their cheerleaders rooting them on to victory. Below, a few of the 115 additional parking spaces outside the Helena Community Center.

Joe and Jackie Beck — lives well lived Joe and Jackie Beck recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Residents of Helena since 2003, the couple has five children, 27 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, two greatgreat-grandchildren and another on the way. (That will make 72 around the dinner table at a family get together, if you’re counting.) Joe and Jackie grew up in High Point, North Carolina, known around the world as the hub of fine furniture making. Both of their dads worked at furniture plants. Joe says the two didn’t attend the same school so didn’t know each other until they met on a blind date set up by one of Joe’s friends. Joe said she was the most beautiful girl he had ever met. He was 18 and she was 15. This was just before Joe left for Annapolis, Maryland and medical training. World War II had begun

and he was about to begin a three year stint with the United States Navy. They only had one more date, while Joe was home on leave, until after his duty aboard the ship LTS 991 was finished. Aboard ship, Joe was a Medic in charge of sick bay for 140 sailors. The LTS 991 carried tanks, trucks and ammunition to unload at various points, and Joe was involved in many encounters in the Pacific theater of the war. “We had enemy planes firing at us frequently,” said Joe, “but fortunately our gunners always managed to shoot them down before they were able to do us damage. He and Jackie married in May just three months after he was discharged in 1946. Over the coming years, they welcomed five children — three

girls and two boys. One of their daughters, Kathy Romano, lives with her family in Helena now and helps the couple manage their affairs. After getting married, Joe was called to the ministry and enrolled at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. He graduated from there in 1951 with a degree in Theology. He remembers that there were 1,000 students in his class. He started his career as a pastor with the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Thus began a long career of church service with many different churches scattered across several states. He founded his first church in Ashboro, NC, with only three members. While there, he grew the church membership a great deal, buying property and

building a church building in the process. He and Jackie remained there three years before being called to pastor a church in Hialeah, Florida, not far from the town’s famous race track. He was pastor there for seven years. The couple then moved to Deland, FL for four years. After this, it was on to Des Plains, Illinois, to begin and pastor a new church there over the next three years. Leaving Illinois and the awful winters the family endured there in Cook County, the family returned south for four years to Winston-Salem, NC, near where Joe’s parents lived in High Point. Then he and Jackie headed deeper into the south, pastoring a church in Birmingham’s East Lake, their first time in Alabama. It was then that the Christian

71st

and Missionary Alliance headquarters asked Joe to head up a Sun Belt Ministry covering five states. In this position, he would work to start more churches in the South. After this assignment, they moved to Macon, Georgia for a year and a half. After leaving Macon, they moved back to the High Point/Greensboro area where they worked at a public storage facility while taking care of his mom and jackie’s mom. Then they moved back to the Macon area for several years before returning to Birmingham. The move back to Birmingham would prove fortuitous; due to heart disease diagnosed in Joe, he underwent several open heart surgeries here. “By the grace of God,” he said, “I recovered.” For the last 25 years, Joe says he has been faithful in a Prayer Ministry from home praying for friends and any in need of prayer. He also serves as an honorary elder

at the Brewster Road Alliance Church in Trussville, near the church’s southern district, where he and Jackie are members. “With our age and with Jackie now on kidney dialysis, we aren’t able to attend often, but remain faithful in our prayer life,” he said. He and Jackie enjoy living in Helena, but sadly, Jackie is now suffering kidney failure and is currently at Chandler Rehabilitation after a nasty fall. It’s not far from the Beck’s home in the Sugar Creek neighborhood, and Joe goes to be with Jackie most days. We asked Pastor Joe what advice he’d offer young couples today to insure a long and happy marriage. His answer came immediately without having to give it a second thought: “Love the Lord, love your family, get involved with your church, and follow in the footsteps of your

mother and father. Demonstrate some token of affection to each other everyday,” he finished. Hats off to a brave and devoted WWII veteran and his wife and all the years and offspring with which God has so richly blessed them. Salute!

During today’s event, these students not only pulled weeds and helped with cleanup efforts, they also had an opportunity to learn about what’s actually planted here and how the native perennials we’ve planted are helping the environment. “The more we do to involve our young people the better,” said VanCleave. Meet Helena Intermediate’s Presidents Wiz… 3rd Grader Brodie Powell Brodie Powell, a third grade straight A student in Ms Carson’s class at Helena Intermediate School, is a U.S. Presidents Wiz and can recite the full name of each U.S. President in rapid fire order. After giving us a preview on a visit to his school the day of the partial solar eclipse, Brodie explained that he became interested in the presidents after participating in the annual “Living Museum” project last year at Helena Elementary School. “I was thinking I wanted to be Abraham Lincoln,” he said. “When I got home, I told my mom I wanted to be Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president, and she asked me if I wanted to look up some facts on him. And I was like, YES! We learned that he freed all the slaves and led us 14 Fall 2017 / www.CityOfHelena.org

through the Civil War. And then a couple days later, I said hey, what about George Washington? And I named a couple of other presidents I’d like to learn about, and then, about a week later, I was into it; I wanted to do it. So then I asked my mommy if we could look up facts on all 45 presidents.” (He assumed the role of Abraham Lincoln last year in the Hall of Presidents at HES.) And learn facts about the presidents he did. He learned them so well, in fact, that now he can recite them all in machine gun fashion and in perfect order. Known by family and friends now as the Presidents Wiz, he and his parents submitted a tape to the Harry Show (Harry Connick Jr) of Brodie reeling off the presidents. “They called me soon after and said they were very impressed

with my talent, and they wanted to fly me and my family to New York for me to be on the show,” Brodie said in a rush. “I was so excited!” They flew Brody and his mom and dad, Rachel and Seth Starnes, and his 8-month-old sister Briella to New York a couple of weeks ago to be on Theh Harry Show. (The segment is set to air April 4, 2018, on ABC 33/40.) Speaking with Brodie’s mom after the family had returned home, she said it was exciting watching Brodie on set. “We had a great time in New York and saw the sights—the Statue of Liberty and lots of museums and even took in a New York Yankees baseball game.” Hats off to Helena’s own Presidents Wiz!

Husky Cross Country team ready to run! Helena High Track Coach, Jon Russell, is a native of Arab, Alabama, which is where he first met football Coach Watt Parker when Watt was the coach at Arab High School where Jon graduated in 2008. Small world. Jon is a graduate of the University of North Alabama and has a degree in secondary education and a focus on history. He ran cross country for UNA. Jon and his wife, Brittany, call Helena home now. The couple has two daughters: Emily, 2 and Chandler, 2 months. His track teams (currently starting their 4th season) swept the sectionals last season in Section 4. The guys finished 3rd at State finals and the girls finished 10th which is terrific for such a young team. “We did not lose much talent from last fall, either,” said Jon. “We had a young team last year and will again this year.” This year’s Husky Cross Country boys team has five seniors

after losing four from last year. The girls team has only three seniors after losing two from last year. Jon says the team’s top boy is Senior Blake Vaughn who runs the 3.1 mile cross country distance in 16:40, good enough to be ranked 3rd in the state. The top girl is Sophomore Abigail Ford who runs the distance at 21:12, good enough to be ranked 35th in the state. “We have 38 runners on the team this year,” said Jon. Our boys team has a freshman named Brady Barton who runs a 16:55, good enough to be ranked 6th in the state. To give you an idea of how fast this is, only eight 6A runners broke the 17:00 minute mark last year, and we have two of those running for us,” said Coach Russell. The Helena team compete at six cross country events this fall after which they will compete at Sectionals at Munny Sokol Park in Tuscaloosa and State at Moulton’s Oakville Park.

This year’s boys team also features Sophomore Talon Pritchard, ranked 30th in state; Senior Spencer Hodges, ranked 42nd and Sophomore Blake Childers, ranked 45th. (That’s five Helena guys in the top 50 in the state.) The girl’s team also features Sophomore Ana Walters, who is ranked 43rd. (That’s two Helena girls in the top 50 in the state.) Helena will host a home cross country meet on Saturday, October 14th, with an 8a.m. start. Best of luck to this year’s Husky Cross Country team! Girls Roster: Seniors: Magda Miranda, Morgan Nettles, & Mackenzie Rosener. Juniors: Meredith Byrd & Zoe Rozycki Sophomores: Abigail Ford, Savannah Garner, Riley McHugh, Olivia Simpson, Allison Tanner, Abby Traweek, & Ana Watters Freshman: Daisy Capps, Aamyia

Lewis, Skylar Stark, & Victoria Whisenant Boys Roster: Seniors: Quinn Frank, Spencer Hodges, Ryan Lenderman, Blake Vaughn, & Nate Wilkins Juniors: Austin Folsom & Bradford Willis Sophomores: Max Ballard, Caleb Byers, Blake Childers, Jake Knight, Hunter Pennington, Talon Pritchard, & Rob Saville Freshman: Mason Barber, Brady Barton, Thomas Cherones, Tyler Graydon, Reid Hess, Edan Jamieson, Zach Malec, & Will Moseley

Eclipse not so dark in Helena… Even so, school kids were abuzz in Helena the morning of the Aug 21 partial solar eclipse. Hats off to the Student Government Association at Helena High School for taking it upon themselves to raise funds that were used to purchase approved solar glasses for every student who brought their signed parental permission slips allowing them to join the viewing party. Classes were called by interval to go outside during the event and look towards the sky to see the crescent shape of the moon as it glided over the sun until it was about 90 percent covered. It got dusky, but never really dark, giving everybody a better understanding of just how bright the sun really is. Teachers were on guard in-

structing the students not to look up at the partially covered sun without their glasses in place. Principal April Brand, counselors, teachers and staff seemed as enthralled as the students as they witnessed the event, which occurs just a few times in most lives. Helena Intermediate School also had a viewing party and served Moon Pies to commemorate the occasion.

Mayor Hall is treated to an eclipse Moonpie by Helena Intermediate Media Specialist, Jill Davis; At the high school, teachers and staff stare at the phenomena along with Principal April Brand and students pictured below below.

While at the high school, a group of Helena Middle School students were out in front of their school to view the spectacle. The next solar eclipse for our area is due April 8, 2024. Didn’t purchase solar glasses this time around? With the rush many experienced trying to purchase them in the last few days before the event, it might not be a bad idea to buy a few pair now and put them away for safe keeping.

Husky pitcher Landon Green commits to the Tide Landon Green says he was just getting used to his blonde hair. (Members of the 2017 6A State Champion Husky baseball team dyed their hair blonde on a lark last spring before the playoffs.) “It doesn’t seem like it grows as fast since it has gone back to its natural color,” he laughed. A fan of the University of Alabama since birth, Landon says he grew up going to games in Tuscaloosa and always dreamed of playing ball there some day. After pitching in the starting rotation between two seniors (Riley Davis and Troy Cordey) last season, Landon looks to be the lead pitcher when the Huskies start the 2018 season. And he’ll do that this season as a Crimson Tide commit. “After I finished last season with school ball, I participated in a showcase in Oxford, Alabama, and Alabama’s recruiting coordinator, pitching coach and head coach were there. Then they came and watched my travel ball team, the Excel Blue Wave out of

Oxford, play in the Music City Classic a week or two later. They invited me to come for an official visit June 12. Their new stadium is real nice; they have a player’s lounge that’s like a dream,” said Landon. “I went in to visit Coach Bohannon, and he offered me a scholarship on the spot. My parents and brother were with me, and I was very excited. I knew that if he offered, I was going to commit,” he smiled. Plans are for Landon to officially sign on November 8, the first date signing is allowed. Asked about this year’s Husky baseball team, Landon offered this, “We lost a few starters from last year, but I think this year’s team is going to shock some people, we have a great group of guys coming back.” Landon is the son of Connie and Jason Green. Brother Logan, 13, is a pitcher for Helena Middle School. Best of luck to Landon in his senior year as a Husky and in his college career at the Capstone. Greetings from the Jane B. Holmes Public Library in Helena! School has started back, the days are getting shorter, and fall is in the air. This is a perfect time to visit the library! There is a wealth of accessible information available, and we have great books for school or pleasure. The library has lots of great new books, movies, and talking books for the whole family! The staff is working on and promoting materials from the LSTA grant. In the coming months, look for displays and lists of books, movies, and books on CD. These non-fiction items were made available through Alabama Public Library Service, and the United States Government Department of Libraries and Museums. Look for books and talking books on all kinds of subjects, from cooking and gardening to biography, history, and much more! Simply stop by the library and ask a staff member to assist you. Don’t forget to log on to the library web-site at www.cityofhelena.org You can

access the Shelby County library catalogue from there, with many great features and resources. In other news, the library received funding for a neat Children’s Activity Center located in the Youth Department. It has been a hit with families and children. This new addition to the library was provided through a grant from the Exchange Club of Birmingham. The library would like to thank the Exchange Club for this contribution. Special thanks to Library Board members Brenda Walker and Tim Hart for their assistance with this project. Also, Primrose School of Helena has been so supportive of our library since becoming a part of our community, and we certainly appreciate all they do. Once again, Primrose chose the library to be a part of their Spring Fling fundraiser, and they presented a check for Six Hundred and Nineteen dollars! This funding will be used to better our library and support our goals. We appreciate the leadership and staff of Primrose for thinking of us. REMEMBER, READING IS GOOD FOR YOU!!! Don’t forget to stop by soon to see what is new, and to check our calendar for FUN upcoming events. Check out these great new items on the next page…

Learn a little about Husky Athletic Director, Coach Chris Laatsch Coach Chris Laatsch, head boys basketball coach, assumed the additional duties of athletic director last April. “It’s exciting and a new learning experience each day,” said Chris. “I’m enjoying it. I’m an ‘all in’ guy when it comes to the school and its athletic programs. I hope I can help in all sports and with all coaches.” In addition to his other duties, Chris serves as the physical education coach and says his favorite class of the day would have to be the one he coaches for special needs students. Talking with him during this class, it was evident the students have a soft place in their hearts for him, too. With his new duties as athletic director, Chris is not serving as an assistant coach in other sports, and says he has been able to spend more time this year with his basketball team than he has in the past three. (The basketball season kicks off in November.) “That makes a difference,” he said. 26 Fall 2017 / www.CityOfHelena.org

Chris is married to Leigh, an administrative assistant to Superintendant Randy Fuller at the Shelby County Board of Education. The couple has seven children: Jason and Katherine, 24-year-old twins. Jason coaches with the University of West Florida in Pensacola. Katherine teaches K5 at Helena Elementary; Joshua, 22, is youth pastor at Christ Church in Panama City, Florida; William, 21, works with the City of Helena and is about to start seminary in Panama City, Florida, and is currently interning at North Star Church; Allison, 20, is a sophomore member of the basketball team at the University of Montevallo. She is also on the SGA and is a math major who wants to teach and coach; and Mary Elizabeth, 18, a freshman at the University of Montevallo, also playing basketball and majoring in art. She would also like to teach and coach one day. And last but not least, there’s Austin. He is

a Junior here at Helena High School and plays basketball. He also desires to be a coach one day.

Best of luck to Coach Chris Laatsch on his incredibly full plate and Go Huskies!

Husky Volleyball team ready to make a run says Coach Lewis Head Volleyball Coach and Associate Athletic Director Amanda Lewis says her son, Fischer, took his first steps on the Husky’s volleyball court, so this is truly home for their family. Fischer 4, and Griffin, 2, along with their mom and dad, Blake, the baseball coach at Lawson State, are literally just steps away from their home in the Riverwoods community. (And Logan Marie will soon join the crew.) Coach Lewis says she is excited about her volleyball team this season, her fourth at Helena High School. “We made it to the second round of the state playoffs last season,” said Amanda, “but we lost to the eventual state runnersup, Spanish Fort, in the Sweet Sixteen.” “We lost seven seniors after last season,” said Amanda, “but Coach Howland at the middle school does an outstanding job in promoting the game of volleyball, and the area here is rich in volleyball interest, so we always have enough girls returning to field a freshman, junior varsity and varsity squad here at the high school level.” 28 Fall 2017 / www.CityOfHelena.org

“This year’s group of seniors are my babies,” said Amanda. “They were on my first Husky Volleyball team as freshmen,” she said with a look of nostalgia. “I’m looking for great things from them this season.” Seniors on the squad are: Laurel Ling, Katie Lively, Lindy Long, Abby Moore, Madison Rhodes and Hallie Smith. Six to keep your eyes on this season are: Hallie Smith, Junior Macy Lowery, Madison Rhodes and Junior Emma Johnson. Coach Lewis said that softball coach Heidi Kouveras will coach the freshman volleyball team this season. DeLeisa Lowery coaches the junior varsity as well as serving as Coach Lewis’ assistant on the varsity. Best of luck to the Huskies Volleyball team this fall!

Meet Clayton James, former college football player, Snap Fitness client Clayton James, a loyal Snap Fitness client the past seven years, was born in Broussard, Louisiana. He attended Nichols State where he played on the football team as a wide receiver. Clayton worked many years with Alabama Crown Beverages, and it took his family from Louisiana to Texas to Atlanta, and then here to Helena,Alabama. He was promoted to district manager in Birmingham while living in Atlanta, and he commuted back and forth initially before deciding it was too much driving. He and his wife, Natalie, began to evaluate communities with an eye towards good schools for their son,Trey. They chose Helena, and Trey graduated from Pelham High School in the days before Helena had its own. Trey recently celebrated 10 years as a U.S. Marine, where he served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and one in Yemen. “I play a lot of golf, said Clayton, and it was when my son Trey came home after a deployment looking like an animal, all

buff and in perfect shape, that I told him he looked like I used to look,” laughed Clayton. “Snap Fitness Helena had just opened, and I went in and talked to Sam, the manager. I said the gym looked like the family environment there would be perfect for me to get myself back into shape. I knew what I needed to do to get back in shape as I had been an athlete in my younger days. I started out light and just gradually built back up.The way my son looked was a great motivator for me,” he laughed. And he hasn’t slowed down. Being in good shape has benefits many may not even realize, too… On June 8th this year, on a business trip, he had a layover in Atlanta.“I got lunch at a place in the Atlanta Airport called the Juke Joint. I started feeling bad about an hour later. I thought it was from my workout the day before at first.” But it got worse over the course of a few days, and by Monday, in addition to extreme abdominal discomfort, he was running a

fever and shivering.“On Tuesday, I couldn’t eat. On Wednesday, I cut the grass and washed my truck. Driving home from work later that day, I got dizzy and had to pull over to gather myself together. I walked in the house and my wife asked if I was OK. (I hadn’t eaten in three days.) I told her I was just tired and went to bed. The next day, I had a terrible headache and began to urinate blood. This made me realize I needed immediate medical care, so I went to the emergency room at Shelby. I told the nurse that I felt like I was dying. They were calm until they took my temperature and it was 107! They immediately called their team in and worked hard to get my temperature down. The doctor told my wife that he didn’t know how I was still alive and how I had made it there. He said if it were not for the peak physical condition I was in, I would surely have already had a heart attack or worse.” “IV antibiotics and ice baths eventually got my temperature down to 101.7.

Lab tests showed that I had E. coli, and I figured I had contracted it from the sandwich I’d eaten at that airport sandwich shop in Atlanta. I told one of my engineers with me at the time that something just didn’t taste right about that sandwich I’d eaten. And I only ate half of it.” After initially getting better, Clayton had a relapse and had to be placed on a 21-day high dose antibiotic regimen. “If I wasn’t in top shape, I probably wouldn’t be here talking to you now,” said Clayton.“And I credit Snap Fitness for helping get me there. I’d recommend everybody take the opportunity to join Snap Fitness in Helena and get themselves in shape. They can help you no matter what shape youre in. Before joining Snap, I couldn’t walk nine holes on the golf course, and now I routinely walk 18.” Don’t put it off any longer, join Snap Fitness and get your own layer of personal fitness protection today!

A group of high school students wanting to be involved with their community is a great way to describe the Helena Teen Council. Started three years ago through the vision of then teen, Kylie Woodman, the Helena Teen Council is growing into an active and vibrant organization dedicated to making a positive impact in the City of Helena. During the past year, the teen council has assisted the Helena Business Association with First Fridays and Movies in the Park. They also worked at the first HBA Business Expo and helped man

the Helena Arts Council booth during the Buck Creek Festival. Last April, the teens made their annual trek to Montgomery where they met with Senator Cam Ward and Representatives Matt Fridy and Alan Farley and were recognized in both Houses of the Legislature. The teen council regularly attends Helena City Council meetings, where they are able to witness first-hand the dynamics of running a city while building their civic knowledge and education. “There are so many opportunities to help,” expressed Teen

Council president, Lola Decroes, “and I’m happy I get to do that with great people.” Two other teen council officers, Madison Laney and Taylor Causey, stated simply, “it is just so much fun.” Other teen council officers include Kirsen Gardner, Jacob Bradford, and Will Rogers. Sponsors for the group are Helena City Council member Alice Lobell, Kristi Scazarro and Library Director Dan Dearing. The Fall membership drive for Helena Teen Council is going on through October 11. Interested Helena teens in grades 9-12 may

obtain an application at the Helena Public Library, the office at Helena High School or any current teen council member. Application for membership is not limited to Helena High School students but is open to any teen living in Helena and meeting the membership requirements. “Our teens are some of our community’s most valuable assets,” says Helena City Council member Alice Lobell. “Teen council is just another way for Helena teens to serve and have a positive impact on the wonderful city we call home.”

Helena Lions Club celebrates 3rd Anniversary with a birthday party! The 3rd Anniversary of the Helena Lions Club was celebrated at a gathering in the Old Cahaba clubhouse August 24. The motto of the Lions Club is “We Serve!” and Dennis McCluskey narrated a slide presentation of past notable projects that include raising over $12,000 for the community through pecan sales, gumball machines, raffling eyeglasses and a dunking machine at Helena First Fridays, an event of which Kristi Scozarro has also played an integral role. The Helena Lions Club (HLC) has invested in local youth with generous donations to the HHS Choir, Science Lab and Athletic

Association. The club has also awarded $1000 to leadership scholarships and sponsored a Peace Poster Contest at HMS. HLC members rang the bell during the Christmas season to raise funds for the Salvation Army and donated to the Lions Club International Fund to support disaster relief efforts. HLC sponsors an annual scholarship to deserving Helena seniors who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and citizenship skills. The most recent honoree was Josie Stafford. Two high school students who were selected to attend the Alabama Lions Club Leadership

Forum at Troy University spoke about their experience there on July 16-18. Clara Atchley, an HHS senior, and Jacob Bradford, a student at Kingwood Christian School, had many positive remarks to share with an audience composed of current Lions Club members and visitors. Members of the Helena Teen Council were also in attendance. At the Leadership Conference, Atchley and Bradford heard Liz Huntley, the keynote speaker, who is a committed child advocate and litigation attorney. They also heard from Dr. John Kline, Director for the Institute of Leadership Development at Troy

University and J. Frank Moore, III, Past President of Lions Club International. Lions Club Membership is by invitation to service-minded men and women who are interested in improving their communities. To become a Lion is to become an active volunteer, a member of a respected international organization and a leader in your community—friend to people in need. For information on becoming a Helena Lion, see their page on Facebook at: Facebook.com/helenalionsclub.

Lane and Jessie Bearden pose in front of their Bearden Farms home with their three children, l-r: Jozie, 3, Cooper, 5 and Piper, 8 months; top left: Lane dives for the end zone on a faked punt against the Oklahoma Sooners and bottom: back to punt against SEC foe Vanderbilt.

Sweet Home Helena

Lane Bearden returns home to Helena with wife Jessie and their children Lane Bearden’s great grandfather was Ned Bearden, who donated the property upon which Pelham High School was built and for whom their football stadium was named. The son of former city councilman John “Lonny” Bearden and former Pelham High School teacher Cathy Bearden, Lane grew up in Helena during the ’80s and ’90s on the family farm off Helena Road. He played baseball in Helena and soccer and basketball in Pelham. At that time, Helena kids attended Helena Elementary through 5th grade, then travelled through Pelham and Hoover to attend middle school at Riverchase and then on to Pelham High School in the days before Helena had one of its own. Lane remembers that in those days, Helena didn’t even have its own grocery store. “We had to pretty much go to Pelham or Hoover for everything we needed.” He says his mom wouldn’t let him play football until he was in the 8th grade at Riverchase, where he played outside linebacker for former coach Bill Brewer’s Rams. “When we got to high school, 38 Fall 2017 / www.CityOfHelena.org

they pulled Tyler Watts up to start as QB on the varsity his freshman year, so I played QB on the 9th grade team,” said Lane. Later, he would play safety, punter and place kicker and would develop into a top receiving target of best friend Tyler at Pelham High. He was also receiver his senior year. Lane was recruited to the University of Alabama as a receiver by former Panther and Crimson Tide receiver, Dabo Swinney, who coached receivers at UA for Coach Mike Dubose at the time. “I redshirted my freshman year and got mono during two-a-days the next year. When I got back to practice, I couldn’t hit or be hit because of an enlarged spleen, so the coaches told me that since I’d punted and kicked in high school, to go work out with the kickers. I guess it stuck, since that’s what I did my entire career there,” he chuckled, “I handled the punting and kickoffs.” Lane did indeed kick in high school. In fact, after his senior year, in the Alabama/Mississippi All Star game, he was named Alabama’s MVP for the punting and place kicking clinic he put on. (Another

future Tider, Freddie Milons, was named Mississippi’s MVP for his performance in the game as a receiver.) Coach Dennis Franchione took over for Mike Dubose after Lane’s second year, and Franchione often referred to Lane as “the toughest kicker in America” for his tackling skills on special teams as the Tide’s punter and kick off specialist. He also held for extra points and field goals his senior year and a highlight that season was when he scored a touchdown against Oklahoma on a faked field goal. Asked what his favorite memory was playing for Alabama, Lane said “really it was just playing for Alabama. It was a dream come true. I originally played as an invited walk on and earned a scholarship my junior and senior years. Also, us winning the SEC in Atlanta and playing against Tom Brady and Michigan in the Orange Bowl my senior year. He wasn’t as good back then, but they did win,” he said. Lane says he and some former team mates took a tour of the new facilities at the Capstone a few years back after playing in a basketball

game for charity, and says he was amazed at the improvements made to the facilities since Coach Nick Saban took over. “Our weight room was nothing but an over sized high school caliber facility,” he laughed. “What they have now is all state-ofthe-art. There is so much there now, not only in terms of training facilities but also recreational opportunities. A lot of guys come there with no money, so it used to make it difficult for everybody to find something to do during down time. That’s not the case these days,” he said. “Guys playing there today really have no reason to go off campus—it’s all right there for them.” “Coach Saban is intense, laser focused and in control of every situation with his players—it’s all planned out for them.” He added, “When I was talking to him, you could sense his mental wheels rolling—like he was already considering what he was going to do next. I imagine his coaching is a lot like that, too,” he said. “Scott Cochran (Tide strength and conditioning coach), is ‘on’ all the time, too,” Lane laughed. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

Lane soon decided he’d take up the game of soccer again. After two soccer seasons worth of dating, the two tied the knot and haven’t looked back. First living in Shelby County and then moving to Mobile for work, Lane eventually took a job back in Birmingham in December, 2015, as service manager for the local Kenworth dealership. (Their Kenworth group of dealerships all over the south is known as Truckworx and is managed by Will Bruser, also a Pelham High School graduate.) He says he and Jessie enjoy living in Helena and try to take advantage of all the family friendly events here, from Movies in the Park and First Fridays to Market Days and the Duck Race (Buck Creek Festival). “I couldn’t imagine any place we’d be happier. Jessie says she enjoys shopping in the little shops in Old Town, and that the kids are happy with both their school and church. “The kids are in the Childhood Enrichment Center at Helena United Methodist, and we are members of Church of the Highlands, Riverchase Campus,” she said. FRIDAY

We caught up with Helena High School’s Head Football Coach Watt Parker before the season to ask his thoughts on recent issues in the news about player safety and got his thoughts concerning this year’s edition of the Huskies. Read on for players to watch out for when you attend games at Helena’s edition of Friday Night Lights… “Our tackling is so much more fundamentally sound than when I played,” said Coach Parker. “We welcome new Defensive Coordinator Lucas Weatherford who comes to us after a stint at Chelsea and two years in Gulf Shores.” “We are emphasizing new coaching techniques regarding tackling, all designed to protect our players and reduce the chance for injury.” “We do a ‘heads up’ certification program for all our coaches, some call it ‘Hawk tackling,’ started by Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll, where everything is geared towards embracing techniques emphasizing player safety.” “In addition, each year we add about a dozen top-of-the-line Ridell helmets to our inventory to be sure nobody is wearing anything but the best we can offer them.” Coach Parker said the team had a great summer, “as good as I’ve seen it since the program started four years ago.” The guys participated in lots of organized team activities, including hosting a 7 on 7 “Young Guns” camp that focused on 9th and 10th grade players. Thompson, Mountain Brook, Oak Mountain and Briarwood came to Helena to camp and compete.

NIGHT LIGHTS

The Huskies went on the road this summer to compete at 7 on 7 scrimmages at Samford University, McAdory and Spain Park. “While our record didn’t say it, we were two plays away from going to the playoffs last season. We’re looking forward to suiting up and playing ball.” Coach Parker said the offense should be a strength this season despite replacing starting quarterback Riley Davis. “We have a number of returning starters, so if we can stay healthy, we will field a competitive team this year.” Senior Lawson Peoples looked good all summer and is eager to display his talents this fall throwing to senior wide receivers Justin Stuckey and Deonte Tolbert in addition to junior Caleb Owens and sophomores Riley Marks and Jack Gay.

Backing up Peoples at QB are junior Tyler Stephens and sophomore Luke Stamba. On the offensive line, senior center Nash Maple returns as does guard Jakari Forest and tackle Taylor Knight. Add to that senior Brandon Evans and juniors Mac Shannon, Jamie Purkapile and Hunter Cunningham, and the running backs should find seams in which to run this season. After an injury plagued junior year, look for running back Matthew Williams to add his punch to the tailback position with senior Rhett Henderson leading the way at fullback. Also slotted at tailback/running back are junior Kamau Greene and sophomores Ralph Holsey and Will Hawes. Keep an eye on a trio of sophomores manning the tight end position this season: Zack

Goodwin, Jeremiah Cope and Chris Miller. On the defensive side of the ball, Junior Jonathan Williams, lost to injury in week four last season, anchors things on the line. Add to that seniors Christian Young, Christian Billings and Scott Yunke and sophomore Chase Perry to round out the stout bunch. Playing a hybrid linebacker/ defensive end position sometimes referred to as the “Jack” linebacker is senior Leonard Tucker. Manning the inside linebacker slots this year are junior Kevin Mayhon and sophomores Tucker Knight and Cole Pugh. Senior Copeland Rosser is slotted at the outside linebacker/ safety slot, and a sophomore who was second in the state last year on the wrestling team, Nathan

Dunaway. Cornerbacks include junior Jake Schmidt (the only underclassman on the team leadership council) and seniors Nick Cummings and Jordan Wallace. Add juniors Reese Davis, Ryan Lewis and Matt Mizerany and sophomore Brody Jones to the secondary depth. The Huskies compete in the tough 6A, Region 3 again, with state runner up Opelika, Chelsea and Wetumpka. In their 4th year as a program, Helena High School players and coaches look forward to the season with a confident attitude. Be sure to come out and show your support this season. Home games at Husky Stadium kick off Friday nights at 7pm. Make plans to bring the whole family, and be sure to eat dinner at the game!

August 2017 Helena Beautification Award Winner – 313 Lakewood Circle The Helena Beautification Board is excited to announce that the Helena Beautification Award for August has been awarded to 313 Lakewood Circle, Jennie and Brian Shannon. Nineteen varieties of plants strategically placed throughout the landscape allow for continuous transitions of color and height. For the past two years, the Shannon Family have called 313 Lakewood Circle home, and a beautiful home it is. The Tudor style design is offset by a beautiful landscape. As you approach the house, one of the first things that will catch your eye is the Sweet Potato vine that gracefully drapes over the retaining wall by the driveway. That wall is capped on the end with an impressive planter generously planted with seasonal annuals. Quickly, your eyes then move up to the front of the house where you’ll find plantings of Petunia, Vinca and Zinnias all of which that make a bright color combination. The use of hanging baskets and containers

throughout the landscape offers just the right touch of form and color in this garden. “Gardening is a family effort here. September 2017 Helena Beautification Award Winner – 1126 Dearing Downs Drive The Helena Beautification Board is excited to announce that the Helena Beautification Award for September has been awarded to 1126 Dearing Downs Drive, Carol and Doug Rickles. The tin roof of the ranch style home is perfectly situated in a neighborhood named for thoroughbreds. The Rickles have called 1126 Dearing Downs Drive their home for the past 36 years, continuously working to make it the beauty it has become. A sloping landscape allows your eyes to roll through the lush green grass up to an inviting porch where color and texture are on full display. “It’s a great place to sit and relax and unwind”, says Carol. Beautifully positioned planters surround you as you sit and relax and are full of various varieties of Caladium, Sun Patients, ferns and

Morning Glory. The front porch is flanked by a graceful red Camilla that provides color in the winter months. Further down this planting bed, you’ll find pink Encore repeat blooming Azaleas as well as Anabelle Hydrangeas which are mixed in with rock hardscapes. No detail is too small. The back fence is the perfect backdrop for a gorgeous fragrant rose ‘Lamaraque.’ This beautiful white noisette rose is joined on the fence by the sweet aroma of fragrance of Honeysuckle. A lover of birds, you’ll find a whimsical custom bird feeder positioned so it can be viewed from inside. “We took care of my mother in law and loved to watch the birds from the window each day. It brought her great joy in the final days of her life. We love Helena and have loved gardening on this lot for many years, said Rickles.

Husky Coach Watt Parker addresses Kiwanis Club Helena Husky Head Football Coach Watt Parker spoke at the August 22 breakfast meeting of the Helena Kiwanis Club. Watt shared that his dad was a Marine who served in the Korean conflict. “He worked as a millwright in a paper mill for over 20 years,” said the coach. Watt played football at what was then Livingston University in West Alabama where he majored in math. He started out as an assistant coach at Thompson High School under Coach Ricky Seales, with whom he still maintains a close relationship, calling him from time to time to ask his advice. Watt said he coached and taught at Arab for eight years before being offered the opportunity to begin a new program at what was then the new high school here in Helena. He shared a few personal stories about raising children. Max, his son, is in 7th grade this year at HMS and is on the Husky’s football team. “He’d always played flag football, but he said last spring that he wanted to go out for tackle this year at spring practice with the school. My wife and I talk a lot by 44 Fall 2017 / www.CityOfHelena.org

phone, so I called and asked her how he liked it after the first day. “How should I know,” she said, “You know young teens don’t share much with their parents,” said Watt. “But on the third day, she called and said, “He likes it.” (Mom had heard him tell his little sister how much fun it was.) “Now our ten-year-old daughter Kate does a little bit of everything,” said Watt. “She’s played flag football since the age of six. Kate decided at church camp recently that she wanted to play football in the NFL,” he continued. “She said she wanted to play tackle football now. We told her she couldn’t play until the 7th grade, like her brother,” said Watt. “My wife looked at me with that funny look when we got alone and said ‘why weren’t you talking her out of playing tackle football,’” she wanted to know. “I just smiled and told her I was looking at it from a different perspective; she might be a REALLY good linebacker,” he laughed. Watt talked to the Kiwanis club a bit about his recent stint as “preacher for a day” at First Baptist Church in Winfield. “Our

preacher from a few years back, Brother Paul, called and asked me recently if I’d come up and speak at his current church, First Baptist Church of Winfield,” Watt said. “I’m not a preacher,” he laughed, “but Brother Paul had invited the Winfield High School football team and coaches to attend, and to be honest, I thought he just wanted me to come up and give a five minute testimonial to the team. Little did I realize at first that he wanted me to actually take his place and preach.” “What do you want me to talk about,” I asked him. “Whatever you want to talk about was his reply.” “Now I didn’t get in until 12:10 a.m. that Sunday morning from our annual Husky Day activities, and at that time, I was still working on an idea of what I was going to say. I was nervous as could be, but what came to me were the five simple things we can all do to be the best we can be. Following are Watt’s five simple things… 1. Give great effort. You have to give effort to have success. As Nick Saban says to his players, “What are you selling today?” 2. Have passion. Have some

“want to” about you. 3. Never quit. (Though not mentioned, seems there was a former UA coach who made this phrase popular.) 4. Work as a team. Proverbs 27:17 and Ecclesiastes 4:9 - 12 tell us we make each other better and lift each other in times of hardship. 5. Know God. I say that last, but it’s really first. For a long time as a young person, football was the lord of my life. But I soon realized that if I didn’t have God at the head, I didn’t have the BEST plan for success. Finally, Coach Parker shared a little about this year’s team, a team he describes as young. “If we stay healthy, especially at a few key positions, we can have a competitive team this season.” “We open the preseason with a game against Ramsey, the 6A defending state champions. We also play the defending runners up in Opelika. So we have our work cut out for us,” he finished, adding, “I’m looking forward to it.” Many thanks to Coach Watt Parker for sharing a bit of himself with the Helena Kiwanis Breakfast Club!

walk.jdrf.org/birmingham NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH follow us on Twitter: @JDRF

Team Lexi raises funds and awareness for type one diabetes at the JDRF One Walk Helena teen, Alexis Browne, is one of our community heroes who battles type one diabetes. Since her diagnosis three years ago, Alexis has been on a mission to turn type one into type none. Everyone has a story about the snow storm of 2014, but Alexis’ is different than most. She remembers that day being her first day back to school after a hospital stay from being diagnosed with type one diabetes. While many were playing in the snow, Alexis was trying to adjust to her new life–one of continually checking blood sugar, learning to give herself shots, calculating carbs, etc. Alexis has come a long way in three short years. She and her family became involved with JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and 46 Fall 2017 / www.CityOfHelena.org

formed a team (Team Lexi) to raise money and awareness to find a cure. Team Lexi has grown each year, and Alexis has no plans of stopping. On November 5th, Team Lexi will once again participate in the JDRF One Walk/Run at Railroad Park. This event brings together people who share JDRF’s vision to create a world without T1D. Alexis says that one of her favorite things about Walk day is seeing all of the different team t-shirts. Alexis designed a shirt that she sells each year as a way to raise funds and awareness. You may have even seen people around Helena sporting one of Alexis’ shirts! “Everyone who comes out to walk or support the event will bring us one step closer to turning Type One into Type None.

This is a great activity for families and friends to get together in support of type 1 diabetes research, whether you know someone affected by T1D or just want to make a difference,” said Alexis’ mom, Jessica Lewis. “We are grateful for the incredible support of our family, friends and community, who are doing their part to make life better for Alexis and more than 1.25 million people in the United States who have this serious disease.” Funds raised by Team Lexi will help fund much needed research. JDRF supports groundbreaking research at leading medical centers and academic institutions around the world. One of our strongest research partners continues with UAB, where JDRF has funded over $11 million of

research during the past decade. Currently JDRF is funding five research grants totaling more than $3 million at UAB’s Comprehensive Diabetes Center and UAB Department of Pediatrics/Children’s Hospital. Did you know…the incidence of type one diabetes (T1D) is growing at an alarming pace? Approximately 514,300 people (13.8 percent of Alabama’s population) have some type of diabetes. T1D strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D.
