INTEGRATION OF UV-PURIFYING SYSTEMS Looking for a way to integrate UV lighting into your HVAC system? At a time where the devastating potency of viruses is all too clear, we advise on some extra safety measures. Our featured products cover two recommendations, one for new builds and one for existing ships. The two recommendations are based on known references, recent papers from DNV-GL, ASHRAE and REHVA. Heinen & Hopman has examined the available filtration options that could improve virus protection in HVAC systems. Even if SARS-CoV-2 is not airborne, the next virus may be. The UV light improves the general hygienic situation on board and also protects your crew and passengers against symptoms such as headache, lethargy, excessive fatigue, irritations of the mucous membranes and running eyes. However, it is still important to maintain the air ducts properly. FIL

USING A UV-PURIFYING SYSTEM FOR NEW-BUILD SYSTEMS How does a UV air purifier work? A UV purifying system – also referred to as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) – uses ultraviolet energy to disable viral, bacterial and fungal organisms. A bombardment of highly energetic photons damages the organism’s DNA so that it can no longer reproduce itself. Light and all other forms of electromagnetic radiation are made of elementary particles called photons. These are particles which travel in the form of waves. Visible light has wavelengths between 750 and 400 nanometres and is just a small portion of that spectrum. The smaller the wavelength, the more energy the photons contain. Ultraviolet energy is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light. The UV portion of the electromagnetic spectrum has wavelengths between 400 and 100 nanometres and is further divided into: • UVA, wavelengths of 400 to 315 nanometre • UVB, wavelengths of 315 to 280 nanometre • UVC, wavelengths of 280 to 100 nanometre It is the UVC light that has enough energy to damage the structure of nucleic acids and proteins at the molecular level. The most important of these is DNA, which is responsible for cell replication. An organism that cannot reproduce is no longer capable of causing disease.

UV disinfection spectrum

How effective are UV air purifiers? UVGI effectiveness depends on several factors, such as the UV dose delivered to the microorganisms, the length of time that the organism is exposed and the strength of the electromagnetic radiation or irradiance. Exposure time in a ducting system is in the order of seconds, maybe fractions of seconds. Air is moving rapidly through a duct so the irradiance must be high enough to provide the necessary dose to inactivate the microorganisms in this small amount of time. The best place to install a UV-purifying system The short answer is in the air-handling unit, where recirculation air is present. Here maximum air velocity is the lowest and air from all spaces comes by. Cooling coils and condensate pans are simultaneously irradiated when the lights are directly prior to them. The effectiveness of your UV light depends on two things – its irradiance and the exposure time. According to ASHRAE the minimal exposure time should be at least 0.25 seconds. The lower the air speed, the longer the exposure time and the less space that is required. Placement of UV-C light (red) in air-handling unit 4

Because of the cooling coil and mist eliminator, the air speed in the air-handling unit never exceeds 3.8 m/s or the droplets would be sucked out of the mist eliminator. This is why the air-handling unit is the location where air velocity is at its lowest within the system. The surface of the cooling coils is always wet due to condensation, enhancing the possibility of biofilm formation. Such a biofilm is an ideal spot for fungus and bacterial growth. Direct exposure to UV lighting purifies the coil surface. The air handling unit is also the central hub of the system. Air from all the rooms runs through, making this the perfect place to install a UV-purifying system. How many lights do you need? This depends on the dose. Like a normal filter, UV-C lights can filter a particular number of units. This is expressed in the dose required for a certain percentage of inactivation. For example, D90 or D99 for 90% and 99% inactivation. Where D90 is the norm, D99 is only used in clean rooms. Irradiance or the electromagnetic power of the UV light is at its strongest close by the lamp. The further away, the weaker this irradiance will be. The combination of irradiance and exposure time is called the dose. Best results will be achieved if the UVC lights cover the whole surface of the air-handling unit with a heart to heart distance of approximately 20 cm. As a general rule you can use the table below: Air amount

How much of a temperature rise is caused by a UV light? Like normal lights, UVC lights are a source of electromagnetic radiation which give some waste heat. This will be around two thirds of the total power consumption. The rise in temperature can be calculated with this equation: 2 Ptotal * 3 = ΔT qv (( )1,2 * 1000) 3600

Ptotal = Total power consumption of all lights in Watt qv = Air amount in m3/h ∆T = Temperature rise in K Advice Always use a UVC-purifying system in combination with proper filtration. Filters may help protect UVC lamps from dust and debris accumulation, which may reduce UV output over time. Another way to improve UVC performance is to enhance the overall reflectivity on the inside of the air-handling unit. This ensures that UVC energy is reflected into the irradiated zone, increasing the effective UV dose. Contact our sales team to receive advice on your new to build system via sales@heinenhopman.com.

Fresh air is continuously being pulled in from outside, essentially replacing existing air with a new, fresher supply. Onboard Scenic Eclipse, the fresh air intake rate is 50 m3/h per person inside guest cabins and public spaces.

Gues

t Cabin

Sourced from the fresh open ocean, incoming air is double filtered using MERV8 rated filters to remove salt and other particles and MERV13 rated filters to remove bacteria Blocks larger particles and other micro particles. (like mold & spores)

Blocks smaller particles (like smoke & bacteria)

Scenic Eclipse’s fully automated HVAC control system enables the HVAC engineers onboard to control each air handling unit on detail level and set any individual unit to the desired running operation such as constant airflow 24/7 and relative humidity setpoint adjustment amongst many other parameters.

All air handling units serving guest cabins are executed with UV-C lamps.

The general philosophy for the system layout of the HVAC is to keep all different areas with their own specific functions separated from each other to maintain a clear boundary between the various ventilation systems.

USING A UV-PURIFYING SYSTEM FOR EXISTING HVAC SYSTEMS Building a conventional UV-C system within your current installation is not possible in most cases as you need lots of space inside your air handling unit that is rarely available. As ultraviolet oxidizers can be used in confined spaces they are a good alternative upgrade to your existing system. How does a ultraviolet oxidation work? Ozone is generated by a UV-C lamp which emits electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths below 200 nanometres. This highly energetic electromagnetic radiation splits oxygen molecules into two separate oxygen atoms, which then attach to each other or to oxygen molecules, forming ozone. Ozone (O3) is a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms. A basic oxygen molecule (O2) is formed out of two oxygen atoms. Oxygen atoms are highly reactive and easily bind with particles such as bacteria, viruses or other microorganisms. The third oxygen atom of an ozone molecule can detach then re-attach to molecules of other substances. The oxidizing process alters their chemical composition and eventually breaks it down. What is the difference between UV-C purification and UV-C oxidation? Although both systems use UV-C light, they are very different ways of filtering. Conventional UV-C light attacks germs and viruses straight on. A virus that is exposed to UV-C light with a wavelength of 265 nanometres will eventually be disabled if the exposure time is long enough. The area of effect is inside the confined space of the air handling unit. An ultraviolet oxidation system indirectly attacks biological agents. The system uses UV-C light with lower wavelengths to generate ozone particles which attach, attack and disable microorganisms. Here the area of effect is not inside the air handling unit but in the much larger ducting system that follows.

Advice Area of effect in ultraviolet oxidation system Keep in mind that while the presence of ozone produced by ozone generators may inhibit the growth of some microorganisms, it is unlikely to fully decontaminate the air unless concentrations are high enough to be a health concern to people. It is therefore best to see this as an extra safety measure, an upgrade of your HVAC installation that should be used in combination with a solid filtration system.
