Project Intended Learning Outcomes This project satisfies the following Module Intended Learning Outcomes: 1. Apply basic typographic knowledge to the application of a complex information and text; 2. Utilize different typographic systems for the management of text and to explore aesthetic judgment on graphic design; 3. Utilize grid systems and information hierarchy to fulfill the functional and aesthetic criteria of publication design; 4. Apply editorial structure and binding techniques for realization of publication design. Brief Publication design begins with studying and analyzing the content of printed matters. It involves some design basics such as different ways of organizing content, visualization, composition, integrating visuals with type, creating visual interest and clarity of communication. With enormous amount of contents, publication design involves creating a structure that organizes, unifies, and integrates across many pages for a publication. It is encouraged that students to do thorough analysis of content and develop their own typographic system. Task Stage 1: Research and Analysis (in a group of 3-4) — Take a lot of photos as record throughout the journey in order to get useful information and collect visual reference which is interesting to you. Observe people’s activities, initiate dialogues or interview people who live there. Thus, search some good and bad examples for reference. Stage 2: Design Development — “Content is the king”. Page planning is another powerful tool in brochure/leaflet design. After investigate the background of the company or product, identify at least 2 potential concepts (ways of story telling) in pencil sketches for tutorial. By using a grid, students need to build visual and information hierarchy to ensure clarity, readability, and rhythm (flow and variation). Stage 3: Realization —There are almost endless possibilities to create a format that enhances the overall message to your target audience. Keep modifying the layouts until they are clear to communicate – making content accessible and readable in professional manner of finishing. Assessment Scheme CA1&2: Research and analysis (group) - Presentation of “Legibility, Readability & Hierarchy” - Documenting with photo research and evaluation of the cultural heritage
