The Heifetz Mission

PERFORMANCES COMMUNICATION TRAINING The extensive Festival of Concerts serves as the realworld proving ground for both the intense string instruction and the Communication Training curriculum, offering 50+ free and low cost performances.

Modules in Voice, Public Speaking, Drama, Movement, Health & Wellness, and Freedom of Expression, empower performers to perfect their artistry by developing their physical, mental, and emotional range.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH The Institute partners with local schools to offer educational programs, and offers bedside performances for local hospitals and healthcare facilities to share music beyond the concert hall.

Ensemble In Residence

𝑯𝑬𝑰𝑹 is a creative extension the Institute’s Heifetz on Tour program, designed to offer real-world performance experience and outreach opportunities for our most talented and engaging young alumni. A select group of outstanding musicians are chosen to live, work, study, and perform in Staunton, VA under the direct supervision of the Institute’s leadership. Each ensemble receives custom-designed rehearsal, performance, and production schedules and contains a mixture of public, private, educational, and outreach activities. As a result of this transition from extensive touring activities to locally curated programming, the continued expansion of this program has enabled the Institute to fulfill its mission more effectively and forge deeper partnerships on a year-round basis throughout our home region.

HEIFETZ MULTIMEDIA The Institute has become a worldwide leader in classical music media production. Its YouTube channel averages approximately 8,000 daily views, and has registered more than 15.6 million views and 59,000 subscribers since 2015. This both raises the profile of Staunton as a cultural hub, and is an additional means through which we present the artistry of our students to the widest possible audience.

On Air

Each week, Heifetz On Air presents captivating performances by students, faculty, and alumni of the renowned Heifetz International Music Institute, located at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, VA. The program is hosted by Benjamin K. Roe, President and CEO of the Heifetz Institute, and a Peabody Award-winning public media veteran. Each episode focuses on a particular theme, composer, or style, and explores the boundaries of both familiar masterworks and underrepresented repertoire through the dazzling solo performances and inspiring chamber music collaborations captured live on the Heifetz stage. Heifetz On Air is produced in partnership with NPR station WTJU, Charlottesville, VA.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT The City of Staunton is an active and engaged partner in Heifetz Institute activities, providing premium exposure via the Festival of Concerts banners that festoon downtown streets. Additionally, in the summer of 2023 the Institute partnered with Staunton Music Festival to host and promote the “Mozart in the Mountains” tourism initiative, which was prominently featured on visitstaunton.com. The tourism department regularly showcases Heifetz Institute programming through their social media and email marketing campaigns. The Institute is also an active participant in the City of Staunton’s Tourism Advisory Bureau, the Staunton Downtown Development Association, and the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce, the latter of which awarded the Institute the “2019 Non-Profit Excellence Award.” The Institute works with several organizations jointly to promote tourism, investment, and growth in the region, including the Staunton Tourism Advisory Board, The Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Shenandoah Valley Partnership, the American Shakespeare Center, Staunton Augusta Art Center, and Staunton Music Festival.

Economic Impact: The Heifetz Institute is a convening force for a summertime community of 150+ students, 40 summer staff, and 60 faculty members that revolves around the MBU campus and downtown Staunton, representing a significant boost to the local economy. A significant number of families stay the weekend in Staunton during student move-in and move-out, including virtually all participants of the Junior Division (ages 8-14). The Institute directly contributes more than $300,000 annually to local hotels, B&Bs, Mary Baldwin University, and landlords for housing, meals, and facility fees.

Indirectly, tourism revenue spurred by the Institute’s presence and extensive summer programming is estimated to be even greater. Overall attendance for the 2023 Festival of Concerts exceeded 8,000, with 68% of registered attendees hailing from with Virginia. First-time attendees accounted for 33% of the ticket purchases, with 71% of those first-timers coming from outside of our local area.

HEIFETZ HISTORY 1996—The Institute is founded by renowned international concert violinist and teacher Daniel Heifetz. During the first year, 20 students attend the six-week summer program held at Glenelg Country School in Howard County, Maryland. Students came from the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Mexico, and Taiwan. They ranged in age from 16 – 30 and were housed by local host families.

During he first year, Mr. Heifetz serves as artistic director, instructor, counselor, and general “jack of all trades.”

2002—The Institute continues to grow and is invited to move to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. In its first year at Brewster, a record 50 international students attended the sixweek program.

2011— Virginia Lt. Governor William T. Bolling announces that the City of Staunton will become the new home of the Institute, which will officially become the Heifetz International Music Institute at Mary Baldwin College. The following summer, the Heifetz Institute opens its first summer in Staunton, Virginia, with 62 students from 12 countries performing before record audience attendance.

2015— With a new leadership team in place, the Institute unveils a flurry of initiatives, including the establishment of a new Community Advisory Council, the introduction of the Ashkenasi/ Kirshbaum Chamber Music Seminar, a revamping of its concert schedule, and a move of its headquarters and new gift shop to East Beverley Street in historic downtown Staunton. The Institute receives its largest-ever grant from the NEA to support its Heifetz On Tour program, and its Shenandoah Scholarship Campaign raises a record $221,000.

2018— Founder and Artistic Director Daniel Heifetz announces his retirement, and Nicholas Kitchen is named the new Artistic Director. Mr. Kitchen, of the New England Conservatory and founder of the Borromeo String Quartet, is widely considered to be among the finest performers and teachers in the world today. The first full season under the artistic leadership of Nicholas Kitchen in 2019 is marked by numerous innovations, including the introduction of an intensive two-week double bass program, and a ten-day Baroque Vocal Workshop.

2020—The Heifetz Institute becomes the first major summer concert music festival to take its program into the digital realm in the wake of the global pandemic. 100 students are taught by 40 faculty across nine time zones around the globe. The Institute launches Rubato: The Heifetz Virtual Concert Hall as an online version of its traditional summertime Festival of Concerts, featuring 49 full-length concerts across its YouTube and Facebook Live channels, reaching more than 500,000 viewers.

2021: The Institute successfully conducted a hybrid program, reacting and adapting to the rapidly changing safety protocols.

Notwithstanding the challenges, the Institute enrolled 156 students in all—83 in person and 73 online—and presented 53 concerts without a single positive COVID case. The Institute also innovated the Heifetz Ensemble in Residence [HEIR] program to offer support and artistic programming to the local community, as well as tangible professional experiences for outstanding alumni faced with a catastrophic loss of employment. The Institute also receives its largest ever grant from the Virginia Commission of the Arts.

2022: President & CEO Benjamin K Roe is recognized as one of the 2022 Top Professionals of the Year from Musical America. The HeifetzPEG program is rebranded as Junior Division to enable a more seamless integration into the summer program as a whole.

Artistic Director Nicholas Kitchen introduces the “Tape & Listen” process. MBU and Heifetz sign a historic five-year agreement. “The continued partnership... is good news for both organizations and even better news for the Staunton community,” said Staunton /Richmond businessman and developer Robin Miller, a member of the Heifetz Institute Board of Directors. “They do so much to contribute to Staunton’s growing reputation as the nicest, coolest, most tourist-friendly small city in Virginia, bar none."

2023: The Institute receives the 2023 Circle of Excellence in the Arts Award from the Forbes Center, the Arts Council of the Valley, and JMU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. Audiences for the Festival of Concerts reach pre-pandemic levels. Heifetz On Tour activities resume for the first time since 2019 with a return to New England in Fall 2023. The Institute joins the Staunton community in saluting Pamela Fox upon her retirement, and welcoming Dr. Jeffrey Stein as the new President at MBU.
