The fourth edition is packed with stimulating and inspirational components over the four days to enhance your artistic journey. Opening Night Preview benefits the PSAM and salutes beloved arts philanthropist Arlene Schnitzer with the 2015 Arts Patron of the Year award. Be sure to view the public retrospectives for our 2015 Lifetime Achievement of the Year recipient, Fletcher Benton and 2015 Photographer of the Year William Wegman. You have the opportunity to meet and hear from the “Prince of Prints,” Jordan D. Schnitzer and discover how he has amassed one of the nation’s premiere collections of fine prints. On Sunday, we toast one of the true legends of the medium, Gemini GEL’s Co-founder Sidney Felsen as Honorary Publisher. Join us on Valentine’s Day for a heART afFair, champagne reception and expert-led tours of the show floor, for a glass of bubbly before dinner. You will have the opportunity to meet and hear from highly accomplished artists during the Artist Spotlight sessions including Hung Liu; Tony DeLap (with screening of documentary and book signing) and Peter Alexander. On Friday, the esteemed Sotheby Institute of Art presents strategies for art collecting, which includes one of the nation’s most renowned collectors, Houston’s Lester Marks. Cutting-edge installations by Steven Maloney, Hung Liu, Cindy Jackson, Chris Antemann and Jun Kaneko will be on view all weekend. On Sunday, we are pleased to have joined forces with Palm Springs Modernism Week to present a provocative discussion, Hard-Edge Living: Keeping “Cool” in the Desert, inspired and moderated by popular LA Art Citric Peter Frank. About Arlene Schnitzer Arlene Schnitzer is the founder of the first contemporary art gallery in Portland OR, Fountain Gallery, and is considered one of the leading arts patrons and philanthropists on the west coast. Between 1993 and 2012 she and her late husband, Harold Schnitzer, generously donated funding, helping to establish and develop many institutions including the expansion of the Palm Springs Art Museum, Portland Art Museum and The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Mr. Guenther is the former Chief Curator of the Portland Art Museum and author of In Passionate Pursuit. The Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Collection and Legacy.

Artist Spotlight: Hung Liu, in interview with Art Critic Peter Frank 12-12:30p | Turner Carroll Gallery booth | all ticket holders The artist will discuss the creation of the installation on view, Time Capsule, and her upcoming museum show at the Palm Springs Art Museum. About the Artist: After receiving a graduate degree and teaching at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, Hung Liu was accepted into the graduate program in visual arts at the University of California, San Diego receiving her M.F.A. in 1986. She has been a professor at Mills College since 1990. Hung Liu has permanent works in many public collections including: The Whitney Museum of American Art, SF MoMA, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.

The film, from Director Dale Schierholt, takes us inside the studio of this renowned painter and sculptor. Following the film, Peter Frank will moderate a discussion between artist Tony DeLap, filmmaker Dale Schierholt and David Chickey, editorial director and designer of Radius Books. After the discussion, Mr. DeLap will promptly sign his book Tony DeLap: Paintings, Sculpture & Works on Paper, 1962-2013, published by Radius Books and Art Santa Fe Presents, with text by Barbara Rose, at the Charlotte Jackson Fine Art booth, where his works will be on display.
Meet the Prince of Prints: Jordan D. Schnitzer with interview by Desert Sun’s columnist Xochitl Peña Reception hosted by Desert Magazine to follow 4-5p | Theater + VIP Lounge PSFAF presents an opportunity to hear from and meet one of the largest print collectors in the US, who is actively adding to his collection. Jordan will share insights on collecting prints and discuss how he established a world-class art museum at the University of Oregon as well as the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation Lending Program, which focuses on fine prints. About Jordan D. Schnitzer Jordan D. Schnitzer purchased his first work of art when he was 14 from his mother, Arlene Schnitzer, who opened Portland’s first contemporary art gallery, Fountain Gallery. He began avidly buying contemporary prints and multiples in 1988 and established the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation Lending Program in 1997. With Jordan’s support, the University of Oregon reopened the campus museum as the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in 2005. In 2013, he established a new art museum at Washington State University’s Pullman campus.
The Modern Collector panel presented by Sotheby’s Institute of Art 5:30-6:30p | Theater | all ticket holders Though the impulses that drive collecting have not changed for centuries, the process and context of collecting certainly has. This panel will bring together collectors, museum professionals, gallerists, and academics to share their understanding of what it means “to collect” today and how media, social and otherwise, have transformed the nature of the modern collector. Moderated by Jonathan Neil, Director of Sotheby’s Institute. Panelists include Andrea Fiuczynski, Chairman, Sotheby’s West Coast; Lester Marks, renowned Private collector, Houston; Chip Tom, Curator, Heather James Fine Art.
About the Artist: DeLap, a veteran of the West Coast’s art scene, was an early follower of Modernism and the Russian Constructivists, pursuing geometrical abstraction as it moved toward minimalism. Over the years, DeLap’s work has been aligned with several artistic movements including Hard Edge, Finish Fetish, Op Art, Minimalism, Constructivism, and Art & Space. While he has utilized each movements’ techniques and ideas in his work, he has maintained a serious artistic exploration distinctively his own. 10

Photographer of the Year: William Wegman Presentation by Mr. Wegman Hosted by the Palm Springs International Film Festival 1-2p | Theater | all ticket holders William Wegman will receive the 2015 Photographer of the Year Award as the Fair salutes his iconic work. About William Wegman American artist and photographer William Wegman is perhaps most well known for his subtly satirical work with his dogs, a collaboration which began in Los Angeles in the 70s with his Weimaraner Man Ray. Wegman is a renowned photographer, painter and also one of the first artists to work with video as an art form, exhibiting his video works since the 70s. Retrospectives of Wegman’s work have travelled to museums worldwide including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Pompidou Museum in Paris.

Artist Spotlight: Peter Alexander 12-12:30p | Peter Blake Gallery booth | all ticket holders Peter Alexander, born in LA in 1939, gained national acclaim in the art world in the late 1960s for his sculptures made from cast resin, which placed him in LA’s famous ‘Light + Space’ group of California artists. His work is currently in the permanent collections of museums including: Anderson Collection at Stanford University, Corcoran Gallery of Art in DC, Fort Worth Art Museum, Getty Museum, LACMA, Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, Oakland Museum, SFMoMA and the Walker Art Center.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Fletcher Benton Award presentation and interview by LA Art Critic Peter Frank 3-4p | theater | all ticket holders Sculptor Fletcher Benton receives the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award and a 60year retrospective. Fletcher Benton, 83, is a world-renowned sculptor and painter who created a body of award-winning work ranging from delicate sketches and paintings to monumental steel constructions and seminal works of “kinetic art”. About Fletcher Benton Benton was a part of the Beatnik movement in San Francisco during the ‘50s and ‘60s working as a sign painter by day and an expressionist artist by night. Frustrated with the limitations of paint on canvas, Benton began to work with movement in geometric pattern pieces and boxes which he was familiar with from his work in commercial signs. This was at the beginning of the kinetic movement; Benton worked largely in isolation, unaware of other efforts of kinetic artists.

Gemini G.E.L. joins the inaugural Print Component as PSFAF’s Honorary Publisher. Founded in 1966, Gemini G.E.L. has collaborated with over 60 accomplished artists. In 1981, The National Gallery of Art in DC, established the Gemini G.E.L. Archive, a study center for scholars and collectors with a complete history of the LA-based workshop. The esteemed co-founder of Gemini G.E.L., Sidney Felsen will be saluted in a reception by the region’s top collectors.
Hard Edge Living – Keeping “Cool” in the Desert Panel moderated by Peter Frank, in collaboration with PS Modernism Week 2:30-3:30p | theater | all ticket holders For the mid-century American, modern living meant living in sleek, carefully composed houses primed with the latest fixtures and decorated with the latest art. Indeed, the art of the day played off the architecture of the day with knowing panache – and vice versa. Who influenced whom? An artist active in the 1950s and ‘60s will join architectural curators and historians in a discussion of these issues, which have become oddly timely once again. Moderated by Peter Frank, in collaboration with PS Modernism Week. Panelists include Bill Stern, Executive Director Museum of California Design; Sidney Williams, Curator of Architecture and Design, Palm Springs Art Museum; and John Mason, abstractionist sculptor. This is a projected aquarium where sea creatures drawn by children come to life! Children use their imagination to create colorful sea creatures on paper. These sea creatures are then scanned and the software animates them allowing them to come to life as projections that enter a virtual sea, and begin to swim about freely. When children interact with the display, a piece of food appears before them, causing the creatures in the virtual sea to gather around it or swim.
Fletcher Benton: Selected Works Curated by Imago Galleries This mini-retrospective show-cases a remarkable 60-year span of award winning sculpture, seminal kinetic works, paintings and sketches.
William Wegman: Nice Dogs on Good Furniture
This installation from Jun Kaneko’s new body of work draws upon the myths and legends of the Japanese Tanuki figure. Each ceramic Tanuki is hand-built and uniquely glazed. In 2013, the Tanukis were featured in the exhibition Myths, Legends and Truths: Jun Kaneko at Millennium Park in Chicago.
Hung Liu Time Capsule 1999, Wooden box, silk sail, dowel, about 2.5 feet tall, HL99 31 Courtesy of Turner Carroll Gallery | Booth P4 Time Capsule is a wooden box with hand painted Chinese calligraphy, which refers to Mao as the Great Helmsman of Communist China. The five pointed wooden stay refers to Communist China, but also to a ship with five boughs, so that it could not be steered in a single direction, but would spin toward all points on the compass, alluding to the confusion of the Cultural Revolution.

Clad in a Louis Vuitton gown, our goddess descends (or ascends) among them, replete with cherubs and floating clouds of Chanel and Gucci logos.

Maloney purchased more than 2,000 pounds of goods confiscated by the TSA at six California airports to create Banned Booty; a sculpture series intended to inspire conversations on contemporary air travel amid heightened security. Along with Swiss Army knives, corncob skewers and deer antlers, Maloney’s haul included naughty items such as faux leopard skin handcuffs and a bronze “flick your BIC” penis lighter, further inspiring Naughty Booty – Le Peep Show.

Inspired by Meissen’s great historical model of Johann Joachim Kändler’s monumental Love Temple (1750), Antemann created her own 5-foot version. Employing her signature wit and formal references to classic Baroque Meissen figurines, Antemann has invented a new narrative on contemporary morality through her one-of-a-kind porcelain figures in a setting that evokes the decadence of Boucher and Watteau.

Cmay Gallery was established in 2013. Founded in 1974 by William and Pam Campbell, William Campbell Contemporary Art exhibits high-quality contemporary art in a variety of media including paintings, works on paper, mixed-media constructions, photography, prints, ceramics and sculpture. By exhibiting nationally recognized artists, along with new and emerging talent, the gallery aims to nurture an awareness and appreciation of the exciting diversity found in contemporary art.
Established in Aspen in 1973 and relocated to Denver in 1998, the William Havu Gallery, is engaged in an ongoing dialogue through its seven exhibitions a year with regionalism as it affects and is affected by both national and international trends in realism and abstraction. With a strong emphasis on mid-career and established artists, the gallery also shows emerging regional artists of exceptional maturity & quality in an AIA award winning, post-modern building.The gallery has been in the framing business since its inception & continues to offer framing services. With 40+ years in the business of mounting exhibits worthy of critical review, the William Havu Gallery continues to acquire artists of regional importance & national acclaim.

Established in Venice, CA in 1991, the gallery has developed a reputation for innovative and historically significant exhibitions. The Getty featured four of the gallery’s exhibitions during Pacific Standard Time: Fred Eversley, A Retrospective, The Gleam in the Young Bastard’s Eye, Karl Benjamin/Alex Couwenberg, and Ed’s Party, which showcased 40 artists (including Ed Moses, Larry Bell, Tony Berlant, Frank Gehry, Billy Al Bengston, Charles Arnoldi, Peter Alexander, Jimmy Hayward, etc.) and the cross-generational influences and relationships between them. Other recent highlights include: Ed Moses / Larry Poons, a dual exhibition for these iconic painters, two solo exhibitions for Carole Bayer Sager, and the gallery’s current exhibition, Ethereal.
