Welcome to the Fifth Annual Houston Fine Art Fair! HFAF 2015 is a globally reaching fair for a cosmopolitan city. The fair presents a range of high caliber art from both modern and contemporary masters to some of today’s rising stars. We also introduce a touch of the Texas School genre for those homes with traditional southern interior design. There are valuable treasures for every budget level. Ranging from paintings, works on paper and prints to photography and sculpture, you can discover the perfect “find” for your home or office. I want to congratulate our very deserving 2015 honorees. Michelle Barnes is being recognized with the 2015 Illumination Award of Achievement in Arts Education. The curator, arts consultant and omnipresent Clint Willour receives the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. The always art curious and ever searching for the right piece, (or next piece) Lester Marks, receives the 2015 Arts Patron of the Year. Thursday 2-3pm: Walking Tour of Houston Artists Hall of Fame with Curator Hear directly from the exhibits curator, the esteemed art citric Patricia Covo Johnson, as she takes you on a walking guided tour of the displays. Hear how each of the 12 HOF inductees helped shape and excite the contemporary art scene in Houston. Peruse their seminal works on display as you get an historic perspective of their artistic contributions and role in pioneering Houston as a respected and fertile ground in the creation of contemporary art–in the 1980s to present. 3-3:30pm: Spotlight Artist – Pablo Picasso and Madoura Ceremics Masterworks Fine Art booth Picasso personally made hundreds of individual ceramic pieces, and kept virtually all of his own thrown pieces, most of which are now owned by his family or by museums. The Madoura studio and Picasso together produced 4,000 different plates, bowls, vases, pitchers and other forms in limited editions ranging from 25 to 500. Mrs. Barnes is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Community Artists’ Collective (The Collective). The Community Artists’ Collective is a communitybased 501(c)(3) organization that, since 1987, has led change in service to the community through the arts. The mission of Community Artists› Collective is to provide the educational and cultural link among African American artists and all communities, inspiring unlimited creativity. Clint Willour has lived and worked in Texas since 1970 and has done almost everything in the Houston art world during that time. He been curator of the Galveston Arts Center for the past 20 years, and has been an art professional for over thirty-five years. He served as director of a commercial gallery in Houston for 16 years (Watson Gallery) and has served as a juror for over fifty competitions in his career. He helped found Art Houston and the Galveston Art Walk and has been a key player in FotoFest International since its inception in 1984. He sits on 4 committees at the MFAH ( including the prestigious acquisitions committee) and countless public and private art councils, panels and boards. He has been an enthusiastic regular face at gallery and museum openings in Houston for as long as anyone can remember. 1:30-2:30pm: Meet 2015 Arts Patron of the Year Honoree Lester Marks Interviewed by Houston Chronicle’s art citric Molly Glentzer, In the theater
Lester Marks is one of the most renowned, respected and charitable art collectors of contemporary art in the city. He often opens his impressive home featuring his dazzling and eye-popping art collection to many charity fundraising efforts and frequent collector home tours. Over the years, ARTNews has listing Mr Marks in their Top 200 Collectors in the World, and Art+ Antiques magazine, One of the Top 100 Collectors Changing the Art World. Mr Marks serves a several art boards, lectures frequently on art collecting, and is one of the driving forces in the growth of Houston as a primary collector hub. 3-5pm: Discover the Abstract Surrealist Dorothy Hood, In the theater View the 60 minute documentary (1985), Dorothy Hood: The Color of Life, about the pioneering abstract painter from Houston and Mexico whose exhibition is presented in the fair. Post documentary comments by Joe Schenk, Director of the Art Museum of South Texas, (Corpus Christi) presenter of the HFAF Sneak Peak and whose museum will present a full artist retrospective, Dorothy Hood: The Color Of Being/El Color del Ser, in September 2016, with slated nationwide museum tour in 2017. INSTALLATIONS Work by four sculptors – Troy Woods, Ed Wilson, the collaborative of Dan Havel and Dean Ruck, and Bill Steffy – adds visual and spatial dimensions.
On view during fair hours Curated by Patricia Johnson A museum-level tribute exhibition will showcase works by the second round of inductees of the Houston Artists Hall of Fame, some of Houston’s most prominent artists working from 1970-2000. List of 2015 inductees: Painters: David Aylsworth, Aaron Parazette, Gael Stack, Mark Flood, Richard Stout, Dick Wray, 1933-2011, Joseph Glasco, 1925-1996, Bill Steffy Sculptors: Dan Havel & Dean Ruck, Havel/Ruck Projects, collaborative initiated in 1994, Troy Woods, Ed Wilson About Houston Artists Hall of Fame For nearly 50 years, Houston has been fertile ground for the creation and patronage of art. During this era, Houston has evolved into an internationally recognized arts destination. Today, the city boasts 100 world-class museums and over 60 thriving art galleries. With its fifth edition, the Houston Fine Art Fair will recognize the talented artists who have helped to pioneer, develop and establish the city as a significant arts community. Works are for display only and are on loan from the artists, galleries and private collections. Curator’s Statement In 2015, the second iteration of the Houston Artists Hall of Fame features eleven artists, Houstonian by choice or birthplace, and active since the 1980s. The focus on painting offers a counterpoint to the works on paper spotlighted in last year’s exhibition, and to the early 20th century (mistaken) declaration that painting was dead. The seven painters highlighted have been integral to Houston’s abiding affair with the application of pigment to a surface, a tradition as ancient as mankind and of multiple guises. Though essentially abstract, their work doesn’t fall into easy characterizations but rather is as individual as the artists themselves. Four artists represent the older generation: Joseph Glasco, Gael Stack, Richard Stout, and Dick Wray; Mark Flood, David Aylsworth and Aaron Parazette are the younger counterparts. 10
Joseph Glasco would at times cut up his canvases and reconfigure the painterly pieces as fresh, syncopated structures. With vivid color and aggressive brushwork, Dick Wray celebrated as he annihilated painting’s essential flatness. Richard Stout bases his paintings on landscapes and interior spaces abstracted on the canvas into planes of liquid tonalities. David Aylsworth, on the other hand, applies multiple layers of paint in a way that challenges the viewer to (visually) pierce the soft-looking surface and discern colors and shapes hovering beneath. Gael Stack creates an open and boundless space where architecture and figures reminiscent of Chinese painting appear to float untethered in a cobalt plane. Aaron Parazette is meticulous in preparing and rendering hard-edge geometries that belie the sensuality of his medium. Mark Flood uses paint as a transformative medium to make solids seem liquid shapes.

Like their counterparts in the field of painting, the sculptors, too, reveal different approaches and attest to the many ways an idea is made manifest in space. Troy Woods handles exotic woods with the care of a surgeon to create elusive, allusive shapes of enormous tactility. Ed Wilson handles steel as if it were soft like clay or fabric, implicit Troy Woods, Searching for the Divine, with narrative. Dan Havel/Dean Ruck reclaim Maple, steel. Bill Steffy applied the rigor of his background in architecture the design and meticulous execution in silver of elegant forms abstracted from the natural world. About the Curator From 1981-2007, Patricia Johnson served as the distinguished arts critic of the Houston Chronicle. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in criticism in 1991 and 1994, Ms. Johnson co-wrote (with Walter Hopps) Contemporary Art in Texas, which was published in 1995. She also wrote a biography of her late husband, Lucas Johnson, published by the Houston Artists Fund, which includes essays by Walter Hopps and Edmund Pillsbury. 2015 |

INSTALLATIONS Sneak Peak Dorothy Hood Retrospective Presented by the Art Museum of South Texas, (Corpus Christi) Sponsored by PaperCity
Curated installation by Mariana Valdes Debes Featuring 3 Latin American artists: Alfredo Gisholt, Maribel Portela, and Miler Lagos. Premiering at Houston’s Fine Art Fair, “Paper Today” will include pieces from three Latin-America artists who specialize in this media that integrates installation, drawing and sculptures in and with paper: Alfredo Gisholt (Mexico, 1971), Maribel Portela (Mexico, 1960), Miler Lagos (Colombia, 1973).
Houstonians at HFAF will be given a “sneak peak” of the Dorothy Hood (1918-2000) Retrospective exhibition, DOROTHY HOOD (1918-2000): The Color of Being/El Color del Ser. The exhibition will open at AMST in Corpus Christi in September 2016 and is slated to tour museums across the country beginning early in 2017. The retrospective exhibition will feature many works from the AMST holdings as well as pieces from over 30 museums and private collections from around the country. It will be complimented by a monograph covering Hood’s career and will establish Dorothy Hood as a major 20th century American artist.
Katy Contemporary Art Museum presents
The Art League of Houston, Presenting THE LOFT, Sponsored by Local Houston Magazine An eye-popping large area display of performance art and installation., featuring 3 selected artists. Artist Paul Middendorf presents The Power Tower, as they construct a 8 ft x 8 ft tower for observation, conversation and relaxation-a wonderful site specific performance and sculptural element to the fair. Artist Randy Bolton presents Today And Tomorrow, a sculptural print installation, reflecting Boltons’s conceptual notion of sculptural 3D prints. Artist Mat Kubo, presents No Talking, Just Typing–art performance. Fairgoers can sit across from the artist and exchange type written conversation. This often allows participants to open up and share private details of their lives they wouldn’t in a causal conversation.

Pieces of Texas is a new greater Houston area community art project using repurposing and revitalizing as the subject. It was started by the Katy Contemporary Art Museum (Kcam) to help energize the many greater Houston suburb artists and give them a role in the big city›s art fair. Visual artists find, work and finalize a small piece of wood, plastic or metal. These pieces are then taken by architecture students and used to make a final “something.” No artist will be turned down.This “something” will be exhibited at this year›s HFAF. After the fair, this “something” will find a permanent home at the Kcam–Katy Contemporary Art Museum. Big Hook, Small Tank, from artist Filipe Lopez Combining the fishing tradition of the artist’s Cuban heritage and merging it with psychology including the idea of people as lures, Lopez shows the skilled balance and beautiful construction of oversized hooks and lures submerged in his Hook series. The oversized hook in this piece symbolizes man’s desire to always have a large and substantial catch in life regardless of where the hook is placed. The wooden hook symbolizes the historical aspect of fishing hooks and lures that were handmade as an art form. 2015 |

Mahmoud Obaidi, born in Baghdad, is an IraqiCanadian contemporary artist. His work has been exhibited in museums worldwide, including the National Museum of Bahrain, Manama, Bahrain; Musée de l’Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, France; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar; Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, Amman, Jordan; Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Houston, Texas, United States; and the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec, Canada. Most recently Obaidi’s work has been featured at the 56th Venice Biennale in a group exhibition, “In the Eye of the Thunderstorm: Effervescent Practices from the Arab World and Asia,” in Venice, Italy. Mahmoud Obaidi’s work was first exhibited at Deborah Colton Gallery last year in a group exhibition by three Middle Eastern artists, “Mapping Strife: Perception and Reality.”

Tim Burton, directed the movie about this unique woman titled “Big Eyes” staring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. Margaret Keane had to paint in Federal Court to prove that she and not her former husband, Walter, actually did the paintings that became world famous. If you saw the movie, all the images you see are reproductions, and for good reasons. But here you have a chance to see the real thing, and hopefully take one or more home. She still paints at 88 yrs. of age. You will likely be very surprised at the range of her talent.

If art had a Hall of Fame, it would be what you see for sale at Muzeion. From ancient Egyptian sarcophagi to a stingray leather necklace that belonged to the Matisse collection, Muzeion is a wonderland of one-of-a-kind art. With sculptures in bronze that seem to still be liquid and a granite sculpture called “Fire,” Muzeion literally brings the best of both ancient and contemporary worlds when it comes to art. Royal jewels, the emperor’s clothes (yes, they are visible), and gold figures from a time before Columbus sailed the ocean blue are comfortably hosted in a space that transcends time. Art outlives us. But we can foster it for a while on its journey.

Having an extensive background as Art Dealers for more than five years and having lived in Venezuela, USA, Mexico, Argentina, Germany and Singapore we decided to venture into opening our first art gallery in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami in 2014. Our passion focuses on Geometric abstraction and Kinetic art, a movement that emerged after World War I and flourished following World War II achieving a critical mass of artists in the 1960’s who focused on creating an alternative, viewer-center experience. This movement did not only developed in Europe but also exploded in Latin America with contributors such as Carlos Cruz-Diez, Julio Le Parc, Mateo Manaure, Luis Guevara Moreno, Alejandro Otero and Jesus Soto among others.
