This book is quite contradictory in its nature. It's a bilingual book, in that contains poems written in English and Spanish. But it is also monolingual, in that nothing has been translated: every poem appears in the language it was written in. These poems were written as I moved from my adopted home, Chile, to my heart-and-homeland, Colorado, and on again to Spain, my current, temporary, and still unknown home. I chose not to translate this edition so as to present an unaltered snapshot of a unique and special time in my life, a time of limbo, a time of transition. In this way, this book, in its contradictions, parallels my own existence and the beautiful paradox I’ve been locked in an unending dance with throughout my young adulthood: life in two languages, between cultures, in constant movement, mourning and suffering the distance separating my heart and many of the people I love most, yet swept up in boundless joy in hope for the future and what is possible.

I realize this choice not to translate this book limits its ability to be fully accessible to my potential readers. Indeed, many of you will only be able to read, at face value, one half or the other of what I've written. Others will be able to read the whole book, in varying degrees depending on your fluency in both languages.

My hope is that you will take joy in reading all of these poems, even the ones in the language that you perhaps don’t speak.

Pick out words you know or that look familiar to you, and sound out words you don’t. If you have no idea how they should be pronounced, say them anyway! You may be surprised at what you can interpret. Someday I may translate and share them with you again.

Este poemario tiene una naturaleza bastante contradictoria. Es bilingüe, en el sentido de que contiene poemas escritos tanto en inglés como en español. Pero también es monolingüe, porque ningún poema ha sido traducido: cada poema aparece en el idioma en que fue escrito. Escribí estos poemas mientras me mudaba de mi hogar adoptado, Chile, a mi patria-corazón, Colorado, y luego a España, mi hogar actual, temporal y todavía desconocido. Elegí no traducir esta edición

para presentar una fotografía inalterada de una época única y especial de mi vida, una época de limbo, de transición. De esta manera, este poemario, en sus contradicciones, es paralelo a mi propia existencia y la bella paradoja con que he bailado inseparablemente durante mi vida de joven adulto: la vida en dos idiomas, entre culturas, en movimiento constante, lamentando la distancia que separa mi corazón y muchas de las personas que más amo, pero conquistado por un gozo sin límites en esperanza por el futuro y lo posible. Me doy cuenta de que esta decisión de no traducir este poemario limita su capacidad de ser totalmente accesible para mis lectores potenciales. Efectivamente, muchos de ustedes sólo podrán leer, a valor nominal, una mitad o la otra de lo que he escrito.

Otros podrán leer el libro entero, en distintos grados en función de su dominio de los dos idiomas. Mi esperanza es que disfruten todos estos poemas, incluso los que están en el idioma que tal vez no hablan. Identifiquen las palabras que sepan o que parezcan familiares, y pronuncien las palabras que no, ¡incluso si no tienen idea de cómo se pronuncian! Puede que se sorprendan por lo que pueden interpretar. Algún día, tal vez los traduciré y los compartiré con ustedes de nuevo.

Ascension Suite I. I am in the valley but I see the sun rising and the tribal drums in my chest sprout as wings that lift me up to soar at greater heights I feel the cool dawn air brush her mist on my face and my lungs are scrubbed of all angst and despair as I inhale deeply and gaze at the larger picture II. In my chest beats the rhythm of ascension climbing high mountain passes to snowcapped frontiers I breathe blue skies dotted white with clouds extending infinitely over vast horizons I sing the melodies of rushing alpine winds carrying wild flower sent from golden meadows below Dust from eroding mountains runs through my veins keeping me forever bound to this land that owns my heart 16

III. I am from the dirt though I fly over lofty peaks carried by the winds of distant melodies the dust that runs in my blood keeps me returning to the ground I navigate distant oceans breathing fresh saline tinted mist yet I crave to smell the earth that birthed me

IV. Carry me on blowing melodies over snowcapped cathedrals but be sure you return me to the ground so I can dance in the dirt that bears my name

V. You paint the mountains so lofty so grand with your finger prints you dot the blue sky above with majestic puffs of perfect white clouds

Some may feel insignificant in the face of such grandeur and extravagant display of majesty but what a privilege I feel to get to lie here on the ground 17

Streets We Have Walked Streets we have walked, my darling, streets whose names we did not know, whose direction was irrelevant for our present journey. These streets, my love, have brought us to magical places, sublime discoveries in our souls that make this nonsensical experience we call life have some sort of coherence and meaning. Walking together, the moonlight has revealed cracks and folds in our tapestry; shining bright, the sun allows us to see fuzzy images of that which really matters on the other side of the veil over our eyes.

Your hand in mine, we have ascended staircases that wind up verdant green hillsides among brightly colored structures, the smell of the sea breaking through stagnant odors rising up from the ground. We have climbed to the sky to observe far and wide the world that surrounds us, and ourselves by extension.

Meandered we have my darling, around lakes, along streams, and through valleys, the weight on our backs slowing, but not stopping us as we press on towards some yet-unknown goal, prayers prayed on our behalf moving before us, carrying us in their draft.

A Poem Not to Be Written Today I found a poem, while standing in the rain, watching the creek flow just at its limit amidst the reeds, the clouds silently socked in overhead like stealth; a poem that speaks of prophesies soon to be revealed, in a triumphant whisper of praise, echoing out over once-parched knolls now softened as a saturated sponge.

But this poem was not to be written, elusive as it was, the threads of its composition not yet weaved together: it’s time had not yet come. So it seemed best to leave it in its place, hovering over the water below the birds, for someone else to come along and find.
