HHYC SIGNS NEW RECIPROCAL AGREEMENT WITH YACHT CLUB OF GREECE 白沙灣遊艇會與希臘遊艇會簽訂相互協議

History of YCG It has been over 86 years since YCG was founded in Piraeus’s Mikrolimano port. It is a club with great history and one to which sailing in Greece owes its tremendous development. Indeed, thanks to YCG, sailing is now considered an Olympian sport.

希臘遊艇會在 86 年多前，在比雷埃夫斯的 Mikrolimano 港口成立。這個遊艇會歷史悠久，而 且推動了希臘帆船活動的偉大發展。帆船今天成 為奧運會運動之一，確實是希臘遊艇會的功勞。

YCG was founded on 1 November 1933 by distinguished Athenian Sailors and was initially named the ‘Yacht Club of Athens’. Their vision was to create a club where friends of all marine sports could meet and sail their yachts. In 1936, the Club became known as the Yacht Club of Greece, a name that it retains up to this day. However, between 1940 and 1973, during the reign of King George II and later Kings Paul and Constantine, all three fervent yachtsmen and admirals of the Club, it carried the label of ‘Royal Yacht Club of Greece’.

一九三三年十一月一日，一群雅典的帆船好手成 立了希臘遊艇會，當時會所本來叫「雅典遊艇會」 。 會所的願景是讓所有海上活動愛好者，可以聚首 一堂，揚帆出海。到了一九三六年，會所改名為希 臘遊艇會，並沿用至今。不過，在一九四零年到 一九七三年期間，三名在位的君主（喬治二世、保 祿大帝和康斯坦丁大帝）非常熱愛帆船活動，更 加是會所的海軍上將，所以當時會所被稱為「希 臘皇家遊艇會」。

Burning candles and girls dressed as bears The Club is located on the peninsula of Piraeus, at the ancient Athenian military port of Mounichia. The area took its name from the ancient Greek festival Mounichia—that was held (on the full moon) on the 16th of the Attic calendar month Mounichion (modern-day April/May) in honour of Greek goddess Artemis Mounichia. The surname of the goddess originates from the hill of Mounichia, upon which stood an Artemis temple, close to Piraeus and to the site of the battle of Salamis.

The festival was instituted to commemorate the victory of the Greek fleet over the Persians at Salamis. At this festival, cakes–adorned all round with burning candles–were offered to the goddess; and young girls were dressed up as bears in an initiation ceremony known as a Brauronia. This port is one of three historic naval stations of the Ancient Athenian Democracy. It is small and picturesque and, despite still retaining its ancient name, is now best known as Mikrolimano.

Hosting royalty Since 1933, the Club has offered its hospitality to royalty, heads of state and numerous dignitaries visiting Greece. YCG has played a leading role in the development of yachting, yacht racing and sea tourism in Greece. Considered among the best clubs in the world, YCG has its main building perched at the top of the hill of the Piraeus Peninsula, at the southwestern end of Mikrolimano. The view from the building is breathtaking, stretching from the Faliron—Saronic Gulf views to the islands of Salamina, Aegina and Poros and back to Athens and the surrounding mountains. At a closer angle, the Club is surrounded by beautifully groomed gardens. The Club buildings include three separate dining and mess facilities, one of which is specially designed for casual use by athletes and members. The Club includes areas for ceremonies and presentations, while a fixed video camera atop the club mast allows viewing of the sailing course areas and can zoom right into the race area for a close up of the contestants. This is also used for the recording of events and live presentations on video walls.

Club facilities Additional buildings stand on the port itself and have been specially designed for the athletes—to be used during competitions and other events. The following facilities are available: 1. The main building and port facilities—including reception rooms, restaurant, casual restaurant, verandas, bars, lecture rooms, Board of Director’s hall, gym room, sailing classroom and ceremonial halls.

2. The port site—allocated space compromising lots for members’ boats, cranes for boat launching, two large storage hangers for yachts, storage rooms for yachts and changing rooms.

3. A series of racing boats—including Yngling, Optimist, Lightning, 420, 470, 49er, 2.4., Europe, Laser, etc. are at members’ disposal.

4. Seven inflatable ribs—for work/course laying purposes.

5. A number of boats for committee members and observation use.

Club Lounge The achievements of Greek Sailors at both National and International Competitions are important and noteworthy.

Achievements peaked during the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, where the then Crown Prince Constantine and his two-man crew—Odysseus Eskitzoglou and George Zaimis, won the Gold Medal with their Dragon-type ‘Niriefs’. They were YCG members, and this was the first gold medal Greece had won since 1896.

Today, the YCG is the largest sailing club in Greece with victories in both inshore and offshore races. The Club’s aim has—and always will be—to promote sailing and nautical tourism in Greece, to encourage aquatic sports and to provide entertainment to its members. It currently boasts a total of 1,200 registered members and indeed, the Club attracts many distinguished guests thanks to its beautiful location, as well as its gardens and facilities.

From its first President, Antonis Benakis to today’s President, Alexandros Papadogonas; from the Royal Yacht of Greece to the Yacht Club of Greece; from 1933 to 2020—times have changed, and the world has changed, however, the members of the YCG remain constant in their passion for sailing and their love of their Club.

This note to you is being written on 9 February 2020. By the time that you will have read this, the current health crisis will have evolved further, hopefully for the better.

I have read about comparisons made between the current flu crisis (which is in its very early stages), the 2019 flu season, and the SARS epidemic in 2002 – 2003. All the current statistics point to this current flu crisis being orders of magnitude more serious than was the SARS epidemic in 2002 – 2003; and that it will not abate until May/June this year. It is my personal view that, when the world looks back on the unfolding crisis, it will collectively regret failing to take adequate measures in time.

The Club will continue to monitor the evolving crisis and try to make appropriate arrangements. My thanks go to Rene and his team for initiating and implementing measures to keep the Club safe and healthy. There are, however, massive human and commercial impacts on our community and the affairs of the Club are not exempt. We are currently working on the budget for the financial year ending March 2020 and the prognosis is quite grim.

Looking to the future, I draw your attention to two important dates, and I urge you to mark your calendars now: •

The 24HR Charity Dinghy Race will be held on 31 October and I November 2020—this is a little later than the 2019 event to avoid a variety of conflicts.

The Annual General Meeting of members will be held on Thursday, 12 November 2020—this is also a little later due to the dates for the 24HR Charity Dinghy Race.

There are a number of immediate matters in hand—one is the resumption of the Hiram’s Highway widening project (and I have already written to you on this); another is the drafting of the new Articles of Association (where we are making positive headway with resolving the objections from the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) and Lands Department (LandsD); and the third is the preparation of the third submission to obtain the HAB’s policy statement of support for a major lease modification.

There are many other positive actions underway and I urge you to read the various reports in the Hebe Jebes to stay abreast of future progress. In closing, I do hope that you all have a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year.

當你們看到我這篇在二零二零年二月九日寫的文章時，疫情應該已 有進一步的發展，希望疫情有所好轉。 我閱讀了一些關於今次疫情(在它很初期的階段)與二零一九年流感 季，以及二零零二年至二零零三年沙士數據比較，所有數據都顯示 今次疫情較當年沙士嚴重，疫情在今年的五月/六月才有所緩和。以 我個人見解，當全世界都在回首這場發展中的危機，日後或會後悔 當時沒有及時採取足夠的防疫措施。 本會將繼續監察疫情變化以作出適當安排。多謝Rene及他的團隊制 定和落實措施以保障本會各人的安全及健康。無可避免的是我們的 社區及本會的事務都受到人力和財政因素衝擊。我們正忙於本年度 的財政年度預算 ，預計財政狀況會相當嚴峻。 我希望大家展望未來並留意和記低兩個重要的日子： •

為避免各種衝突，二十四小時慈善小艇賽將於二零二零年十月 三十一日至十一月一日舉行，賽事日期比二零一九年的賽事日 子稍為延遲。 因應二十四小時慈善小艇賽賽期，年度會員大會將會在二零二 零年十一月十二日（星期四）舉行。

目前有一些要著手處理的事項包括恢復西貢公路的擴展計劃(這點我 前文已有所提及)；草擬新的組織章程(我們正積極解決民政事務署 及地政總署提出的意見);和準備第三次呈交的文件給民政事務署以獲 得政策聲明用以支持主要契約修訂。 本會有很多其他的工作正在進行中，懇請各位閱讀Hebe Jebes內的 不同報告緊貼本會最新消息。 最後我祝各位有個健康，安全又豐盛的新年。 Don Johnston 二零二零年二月九日

Empty shelves and queues for masks and toilet rolls are among the new norm that seems to be gripping Hong Kong right now, yet Hebe remains true to its name and remains a haven where we can get back to some semblance of normality. I’d like to start with a huge thank you to Rene and the entire team at HHYC for helping keep the Club clean and operational throughout what has become another incredibly challenging time.

Despite this, the Planning and Works team have been beavering away as usual and here’s an update on some of the latest achievements.

今天的香港，搶購口罩和空空的 貨架，似乎已經成為了新常態。 幸好遊艇會一如其名，繼續提供 一個庇護所，給大家歡度仿若正 常的時光。我首先要大力感謝 Rene和整個白沙灣遊艇會團隊， 在這個非常具挑戰性的時刻，讓 會所保持清潔和維持正常操作。 然而，規劃及工程團隊依舊努力 不懈，以下為大家提供各項工作 的最新情況。

HAB ‘Expression of Support’ The HAB ‘Expression of Support’ will have been forwarded to Lands Department by the time you read this, which once obtained will help underpin the future of the Club and works that need to be carried out.

In-house Project Manager With the bulk of the planning, design and initial government approval processes completed, a number of club works will soon enter their building and construction phases. These include the sea wall repairs, marina pile replacement and access lift projects. With this will come a significant amount of project management work, which is a job-and-a-half in itself. This work not only requires a dedicated fulltime manager, but also someone with the expertise to properly manage both engineering consultants and contractors to carry out the required works to the right specifications and timeframes, whilst minimising the impact on club members and staff.

These are important projects and we want to make sure we get them done right, get them done expeditiously, and get them done by someone who understands the Club and has the best long-term interests of the Club as their priority. With this in mind, GenCom has approved the proposal put forward by the PWC to appoint a full-time in-house Project Manager (PM). This avoids the need to use out-of-house consultants for this critical role and will significantly boost the skill sets of the HHYC team, with an expert in professional project management.

The PM will report to the GM and work closely with PWC to monitor all PWC projects and maintenance works at the Club for the foreseeable future.

Sea wall We are continuing to follow up with Aecom to expedite the full design of Seawall Rebuild.

Access lift & fire safety With regard to the Access Lift Platform, and associated fire services work required before we can get it approved by the Buildings Department(BD), we have now received final approval of FM200 fire-suppression system proposal from both the Fire Services Department (FSD) and the BD (which means with the much more cost-effective gaseous fire-suppression system, we avoid the need to build a super-costly underground water tank required for traditional sprinkler systems).

In parallel, the PWC is currently talking to consultants capable of taking the project right through to government approval and getting an occupation permit (OP). Meetings will be held with them and the AP at the Club in the near future.

Boat rack safety Matthew and his team have done a great job at building the prototype to enhance safety for staff on the boat racks. The next step is to appoint someone for the detailed design and A&A submission to BD, which is, of course, also linked to formal approval of the boat racks (Knight Frank have been conducting remedial paperwork in terms of streamlining the remaining boat rack approval processes).

Cameras to monitor sea level at marina GenCom approved the PWC proposal to purchase two cameras that can be connected to the existing CCTV security system for monitoring the sea level around the pontoons—especially during adverse weather events.

Widening Hiram’s Highway The long-awaited widening proposal for Hiram’s Highway beside the Hebe Haven Club boundary (Lot 1208) has now been Gazetted, and comments to the Government regarding this are required by Tuesday 3 March 2020. The Club’s Lot is included in the list of Lots affected, and at first glance, it would appear this can be divided into the following locations:

As ever, nothing is that easy, and we continue to work on the essential task of ensuring the Garden Bar is compliant with government regulations, prior to commencing the fire-safety works. This requires a change to the plans submitted to the BD—the machine-roomless lift proposal (which will minimise the footprint required by the lift – importance as space is at a premium) has been updated by Carmen Chan (the Club’s AP) and submitted to the BD. The AP is also checking additional facilities required, such as toilets and drainage, as a result of this change.

We will conduct a formal site survey to be undertaken to locate the exact location of the proposed new boundary and to help understand the full extent of the impact, particularly to the pedestrian entrance and kitchen areas. As the current Government plans indicate a new central reservation in the proposed widened road immediately outside HHYC, which would make a right turn into and out of the Club impossible, we are also submitting formal objection to the Government in this regard.

Relocation/upgrade of club vehicle entrance The existing vehicular road into the Club does not meet current standards for an emergency vehicle access (EVA) in terms of gradient, width and turning radius—albeit existing EVAs such as ours can be accepted under ‘grandfather rights’. As part of the Master Planning works previously carried out by the Club, the 2018 ‘Essential Works’ Plan indicated locating a new vehicle entrance adjacent to the Clubhouse and above the existing drainage culvert. With this in mind, the PWC is now preparing a submission to the Highways Department (HyD), before the 3 March 2020 deadline for objections, to improve the vehicular entrance to the Club and relocate it to a safer and more convenient location/option. Several considerations are being examined around traffic flow, technical considerations and cost.

Kung Hei Fat Choy and wishing all members the best of health in the Chinese New Year.

The past two months have been very trying time for HK, due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Hopefully, by the time the HJ goes to press, things will have improved. The outbreak of novel coronavirus has become a crisis for the people living in Wuhan, central China. There is no exception in Hong Kong, as of 19 February 2020, 12:00 noon, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) received reports of a total 1,578 cases, 62 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection including 2 fatal cases, 1,384 ruled out cases and 132 cases under investigation.

As always, members’ safety and the staff’s wellbeing are our first and foremost concern. As learnt from the SARS epidemic, the Club is taking all necessary precautionary measures in a timely manner.

Automatic alcohol gel dispensers have been placed around the Club, and all staff members are advised to wear a face mask and perform the daily body temperature checks. Staff members must also self-quarantine for 14 calendar days, should they have been to the PRC recently. In order to minimise the risk of human-to-human transmission at the Club, we have postponed the Lion Dance and Boat Blessing Ceremony, originally scheduled for 9 February. We will keep an eye on the crisis and take all necessary actions to minimise any influence on the Club.

Winter has come to an end and spring is here; this is the best time to recognise our sailors’ great efforts throughout the last year. The Sailors Award Night will be combined with the 25-years Membership Recognition Presentations and New Members’ Cocktail Party on Friday 20 March. There are more than ten awards, including the Sailor of the Year and the Spirit Award, to be presented. I sincerely look forward to meeting you at the Garden Bar for this incredible evening.

Another great event is the Monsoon Spring Series, which will kick off on Saturday 7 March. On the same evening, HHYC will be hosting the IRC Overnight Coastal Race for the first time. Race One will take place in the vicinity of Port Shelter in the evening. Don’t miss it, visit our club website now for details http://hhyc.org.hk.

As you are now aware, HHYC is a recognised RYA Powerboat Training School. We have been active with several courses over the past few months since our club became an RYA recognised training centre.

The aim of the courses we offer, is to provide the Club and community with very practical based courses, introducing you to small boat handling and maneuvers— with the main aim of teaching you how to drive safely and in control, whilst giving you the confidence to either then go and take your own boats out on the water and enjoy the beautiful waters & beaches we have here in Sai Kung, or to become more active in our club events & regattas. We are always looking for members to help us at these events, to enjoy being part of the Club’s boating community.

HHYC is able to run three types of training courses—offered to the Club and community. Below you can see a summary description of different courses we are able to offer you on our local waters here in Sai Kung.

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 courses The two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and under the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at a planing speed and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or a coastal location.

RYA Safety Boat Courses The two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing/ training activities. It includes rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying.

Personal Watercraft (aka Jet Ski) Courses Personal watercraft (PWC) can be single-seater machines or can take two or three people. They are fast and exciting, but need to be handled with care.

Whether you just want to have a go on holiday or buy your own machine, our PWC course will teach you how to get the best from it. Our course is designed for first-time and experienced riders alike. Increasingly, our certificate is required for launching in UK harbours, but is also needed if you want to use your PWC abroad.

Once you have passed, you are issued with a certificate of proficiency. Most courses take place over one day and can be taken either on a centre's craft or your own. If you are a new PWC owner at the Club, you will need to take this course before the Club will offer you a space to park your Jet Ski at HHYC. All courses are run in small groups, so you will maximize your driving & training time with the Instructor.

Contact the Sailing Office for more details on courses, but remember that these courses are available to be organised as private courses that fit into your schedule with friends and family.

KOWLOON CUP 2020年度九龍盃 2020 It was initially a bright Saturday afternoon, as boats prepared to head out into Port Shelter for the first of two races in the Kowloon Cup—held over the weekend of the 18 and 19 January. On the racecourse, the six-knot breeze was better than expected and despite patches of blue, the sun stayed resolutely behind some rather sombre clouds.

Fortunately, the Race Officers for the weekend— Nigel Slattery and Eric Tomter, stretched the line for the 23 boats competing in the one HKPN class event. All got away cleanly, but it was a lively and competitive affair. RB approached from the pin end and starting in the second row on port tack, managed to avoid the rest of the fleet. This put the venerable Dubois 43 in a promising position.

九龍盃於一月十八、十九號週末舉行，本來那個週六 天朗氣清，各艘帆船準備就緒，駛到牛尾海參與第一 場賽事。來到賽道上方，六海里的風速比預期為佳。 天空雖然大致放藍，太陽卻堅決躲在灰雲後方，拒 絕露面。 這場 HKPN 級別的賽事，幸好有 Nigel Slattery 和 Eric Tomter 當競賽官，他們把起點線延長，讓 二十三艘帆船有更多空間競賽。雖然一開始大家都 勇猛爭先，但所有船隻均順利出發。RB 在第二排從 浮標一端駛出，左舷受風，勉強避過其他船隻。這樣 一來，這艘讓人敬畏、43 呎長的 Dubois 型號帆船 就取得了有利位置。 賽道不設迎風標，各艘帆船直接沿著三十一號賽道， 船身左邊繞過平面洲，直出牛尾海。 船隊駛向砂塘口山方向，風速九海里， 海面波濤起伏。 來到砂塘口山與火石洲中間一段航道，風勢一如平 常，變得喜怒無常。船身左邊繞過砂塘口山之後，大 家都揚起風箏，爭先到達匙洲標記，然後馬上轉變 航道，返回平面洲，向小棕林海灘終點進發。 Generations 在砂塘口山遇到了問題，紅色的大三 角帆末端纏在一起，結果鼓起變成了一個大紅燈籠， 彷彿提早何大家拜年！

Hectic start

With no windward mark laid, it was straight out of Port Shelter on Course 31 with the fleet converging while rounding Table Island to port.

Conditions were somewhat choppy in the nine-knot breeze as the fleet made for Bluff Island, where, as usual in the channel between Bluff and Basalt—the breeze was fluky. Clearing Bluff to port, the boats hoisted their kites for the run to the Bay Island mark followed by a gybe back to Table and into the finish at Little Palm Beach.

Generations had a problem with the sock of its spinnaker at Bluff and, for a while, it looked as if they were celebrating Chinese New Year earlier than usual with the lower part of their big red kite resembling a large Chinese lantern!

Given its novice crew, RB decided to wait until clearing the Bay mark before hoisting its kite. This proved the right thing to do, with the kite successfully gybed at Table for the final run to the finish.

Rampage led the fleet home in an elapsed time of 1 hour, 42 minutes and 58 seconds, followed by the MC31, H3O, with Outrageous just 24 seconds behind.

However, when the HKPN handicaps were applied, Rampage slipped to 5 th.

No One Else claimed handicap honours ahead of Windseeker and in 3 rd, the Beneteau First 44.7, Crystal. RB finished a commendable 6 th ahead of both H30 and Outrageous.

Conditions were looking promising the next day (Sunday) when the race officers anchored the committee vessel in the middle of a Port Shelter for Race 2 of the Kowloon Cup 2020.

It was a short start line for the pursuit race with Scrumpy first off at 10:04 followed at two-minute intervals by the rest of the fleet depending on handicaps.

With no windward mark, it was straight out for a port rounding of Table followed by one and a half laps of Table and Bluff before attempting as many laps of the Kowloon Cup mark and the Bay Islet mark as possible before the scheduled finish time of 1400.

Goddess had the most impressive start in the 7- to 9-knot breeze, which was oscillating between 30 and 345 degrees, hoisting its blue spinnaker as it crossed the start line.

Gearboxx and Minnie the Moocher were the last to start at 11:26 but were joined by the late arrival of the short-handed, DEA II—some 54 minutes after its scheduled start time! The front-runners made reasonable progress with Scrumpy leading No One Else and Windseeker in the approach, all under kite, to Table for the second time. However, the breeze was already beginning to ease with both No One Else and Windseeker managing to overhaul Scrumpy.

Meanwhile, RB was also making good progress, but unfortunately, conditions were not to last.

It was a difficult approach to Table for the remainder of the fleet as the zephyrs disappeared around 01:30 and their spinnakers collapsed leaving Rampage, Talkinghead, Ichiban, Darling, Crystal and Amaze all floundering beside the island for between 20 and 30 minutes.

The breeze did return, but by this time the Race Officers had decided to shorten course with a finish in the channel between Bluff and Basalt Islands. Perhaps a better place would have been at the entrance to the channel as boats (in particular Crystal) still struggled to cross the line. Unfortunately, of the 21 starters, only 14 finished with seven retiring.

No One Else was the first to complete the shortened course at 14:00:19 followed by X-Terminator and Winsdseeker just nine seconds behind. Minnie persevered and was the last to finish at 15:23:18.

Most of the crews then descended on Yau Ley Seafood Restaurant for the awards ceremony, where Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s new general manager, Rene Verhulst, presented the prizes. For the combined two races, these went to No One Else 1st, Windseeker 2nd and X-Terminator 3 rd.

The conditions on Sunday will perhaps require a rethink on course options for 2021. The event brought to a close the racing in the Year of the Pig with much anticipation for prospects in the Year of the Rat.

ONE FOR YOUR BUCKET LIST (PART 1) Onboard SHK Scallywag: Sydney-Hobart Race

by Simon Jones Grab a cuppa, find a comfy chair and read on—over the next two issues of Hebe Jebes, Simon narrates an amazing trip of a lifetime and his encounter in Tasmania with the SHK Scallywag crew at the end of the Sydney to Hobart Race.

Whether you are a sailor or not, if the opportunity ever comes your way to be in Tasmania for the end of the famous Sydney to Hobart Race in late December of each year, then grab it with both hands. It is a fantastic experience over four or five days, with the city of Hobart coming alive with crews, friends of crews, families and tourists visiting for the race finish and The Taste of Tasmania food festival.

Before leaving Hong Kong, we were told, by many, about the smorgasbord of great food and wine that was on offer and it certainly lived up to its billing.

Let me tell you first, about how we came to be in Hobart just after Christmas with an invitation to climb aboard the 100-foot Supermaxi, Sun Hung Kai Scallywag. Sometime last summer, our daughter, Lian advised that she was definitely going to be in Perth over Christmas, with fiancée Sean—as we have always (until this year maybe) spent Christmas together, Carol and I were invited along.

Once it was decided, Carol suggested that we should also take in Tasmania and drop into Sydney, then on the return journey to visit old friends. When we lived in Sydney for three years in the mid-00s, Tasmania was on our to-do list, but we never made it.

Immediately, I started to wonder whether we might get the timing right to see some of the boats finish the Sydney-Hobart Race. Having been on the start line (in a speed boat) in Sydney Harbour for two starts, I have long thought it would be great to experience a finish. All that was needed was for the flight timings to work out. I wasn’t really expecting to be able to arrive in Hobart in time for the arrival of the first boats in the early hours of 28 December, but if we could be there for a couple of days during the peak arrivals that would be fine by me. With Sean’s plan for the four of us to be in Kalbarri—a resort ‘town’ 6 hours north of Perth—for Christmas, the logistics might be tricky!

Anyhow, when we got around to booking the flights in midAugust, it turned out that the only feasible direct flight that was available from Perth to Hobart was at 06:45 on 27 December.

This would see Carol, and I arrive in Hobart around lunchtime; absolutely perfect!

Wind forward a month to 14 September and the launching ceremony for the three Hansa Access boats donated by the SHK Foundation (as part of HHYC’s annual Bart’s Bash event— what a great day that was!). S.H. Lee, CEO of Sun Hung Kai Group and David Witt, skipper of Sun Hung Kai Scallywag would be participating in the ceremony. Maybe, I would get a chance to speak to Witty about the Sydney-Hobart and bag an invite onboard Scallywag. Actually, who I did get through speaking to was Witty’s wife, Kim and even better than that we received an invitation to join her on board a boat to go out into the Derwent River to greet and track alongside Scallywag for the final miles (if such boat was organised). What a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this could be, even if there was a high chance that we would need to be out on the water at 03:00 in temperatures around 10o C. We then exchanged mobile numbers with Kim for future arrangements.

這兩期的 Hebe Jebes，由 Simon Jones 向大家講述 千載難逢的悉尼—塔斯曼尼亞賀伯特賽事，分享 SHK Scallywag 在賽事中的精彩表現。 無論你是水手與否, 如果有機會在年底去塔斯曼尼亞， 出席著名的悉尼—賀伯特帆船賽，千萬要好好把握機 會。四到五天的經歷，定必令你終身難忘。賽事期間， 賀伯特整個城市聚滿船員、親朋戚友和來看賽事尾段 的遊客，同期還有塔斯曼尼亞美食節。我們從香港出 發之前，好多人都告訴我們，當地有各種讓人垂涎三尺 的美食、美酒，結果我們真的沒有失望。 首先要告訴大家，到底我們是如何獲得邀請，上了一百 呎長的 Supermaxi—新鴻基 Scallywag，在聖誕過後 去了賀伯特。去年夏季，我們的女兒 Lian 表示，聖誕 節一定會在伯斯跟未婚夫 Sean 度過。我們一家人多 年來都會共度聖誕，所以我和 Carol 也獲邀到了伯斯。 Carol 建議既然要到澳洲，聖誕過後，可以在回程時， 順道遊覽塔斯曼尼亞和悉尼，探望当地親友。我們在 千禧年代中期，曾經在悉尼居住了三年，當時一直想要 到塔斯曼尼亞遊覽，但是始終沒有成行。 我馬上就開始思考，在時間上有沒有可能安排妥當，讓 大家有機會欣賞悉尼 - 賀伯特比賽的末段。我以前有 兩次機會，坐了快艇，在悉尼港口觀看比賽出發一段。 我本來就想，如果有機會看到賽事完成一段，肯定也是 賞心樂事。萬事俱備，只欠航機時間。我本來沒預期可 以在二十八號早上到達賀伯特，看著首批船隻到達終 點。其實只要在高峰期間那兩天，可以看到部份船隻 來到終點，已經非常難得。Sean 的計劃是讓我們一家 四口，在伯斯北部六小時車程的度假小鎮 Kalbarri 共 度聖誕，所以坐飛機的時間安排確實有點棘手。 無論如何，我們在八月中訂機票的時候，卻發現從伯 斯直飛賀伯特的航班，只有二十七號早上六點四十五 分一班是可行的。那麼我和 Carol 就可以在二十七號 中午到達賀伯特，簡直是完美的安排。 我們把時間往前推移到九月十四日，也就是新鴻基基 金捐贈三艘漢莎 Access Boats 的日子。（當日活動 也是白沙灣遊艇會一年一度 Bart’s Bash 活動的其中 一環，真是讓人興奮的一天！）新鴻基集團行政總裁李 成煌先生和新鴻基 Scallywag 船長 David Witt 也出 席當日的典禮。也許我可以跟 Witt 先生聊聊悉尼— 賀伯特賽事，拿到登上 Scallywag 的邀請。結果，我 和 Witt 先生的太太 Kim 聊上了。Kim 表示，如果安排 到的話，我們可以跟她一起上船，去到德文特河迎接 Scallywag，陪伴 Scallywag 走過終點前的一段航道。 真是一個千載難逢的機會！雖然我們大概要在凌晨三 點來到河上，并體會到只有攝氏十度的氣溫。我們跟 Kim 交換了電話，以便之後聯絡。

MONSOON WINTER SERIES 2019 RACE 6 2019冬季系列第6場賽事

Picture perfect conditions welcomed 15 of the 25 registered entries for Race 6—the penultimate race day of the HHYC’s Monsoon Winter Series 2019. Held out of Port Shelter, the breeze was better than expected at 7 knots from 110 degrees.

Race Officer, Eric Tomter, and the team opted to forgo laying a windward mark and chose Course #102 for the IRC fleet and Course #31 for the HKPN boats.

First off on schedule at 1400 were the four IRC boats.

Their course would take them around Bluff, Basalt and Table Islands, all to starboard, before finishing at Little Palm Beach after 13 nautical miles. Outrageous, powered up, led the fleet across the start line at the committee boat end followed by Blu. Talkinghead, nearer the centre of the line followed, whilst X-Terminator brought up the rear.

Eleven boats in HKPN followed at 1405, sent on a shorter 10nm race, taking in Table and Bluff Islands and the Bay mark to port, Table to starboard and again finishing at Little Palm Beach.

Ichiban, the MC31 H3O, Bits & Pieces and Bucephalus were amongst the front-runners. Lazy Piggy, having tacked early had to avoid a port/starboard incident with No One Else—was almost run down by a speeding LoTech bringing up the rear.

Bits & Pieces was the first to enter the channel between Bluff and Basalt Islands followed by H3O and Amaze.

Temujin went too close to Bluff and had to tack out, allowing Ichiban to overtake, which was closely followed

by Bucephalus and LoTech. No One Else stayed further

白沙灣遊艇會 2019 冬季 系列第 6 場賽事海島賽， 在風和日麗的周六下午揭 開序幕。原有２５艘船隻 報名這場屬於系列中的次 尾場賽事，但最後參賽船 隻則只有 15 艘船。賽事起 點在牛尾海對開海域，風 速最初有 7 海浬，比預期 稍高，風向則為東南偏東 (110 度 )。 賽事負責人為 IRC 組別選 擇 #102 航道，而 HKPN 組則為 #31 航道，起點後 不設迎風標。 下午 2 時，賽事正式展開， 有 4 艘 IRC 組船隻參賽， 他們要環繞沙糖口，右舷 經火石洲及平面洲，在小 棕林對開衝線。航程 約 13 海浬。 Outrageous 首先在接近 司令船位置起步帶出，隨 後 Blu，Talkinghead 選擇 在中間位置起步。最後起 步是 X-terminator。 五分鐘後，開賽的是 HKPN 組別的 11 艘船隻，

out in the channel and closed the gap on those ahead as they began to flounder in the sheltered waters.

However, at least maintaining momentum, the HKPN boats managed to clear the channel from where it was up with their colourful kites for a run across to the Bay mark and back to Table Island, and the finish. With only three crews, it was not until approaching Table that Temujin hoisted its red kite but, by then, the veteran Northshore 38 had already been overhauled by Lazy Piggy.

The breeze had swung to 160 degrees and was beginning to ease, dropping to a frustrating three knots for the late finishers. First across the line in IRC was Outrageous but it lost out to both Blu (1st) and Talkinghead (2nd) on handicap, with X-Terminator in 4th place.

Unfortunately, some late changes in handicaps after the awards ceremony meant the HKPN results had to be revised. H3O took line honours by four minutes over Bits & Pieces and was subsequently awarded 2nd place once

Jedai, bringing up the rear, radioed in to retire, allowing the race officer to lift anchor and head, after a great afternoon on the water, for the awards ceremony and San Miguel refreshments at the Garden Bar. Numbers would again swell for the finale with two geometric races and the closing function on Saturday, 14 December 2019, bringing to a close the first event in the 2019-2020 Monsoon Series—organised in conjunction with the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

Further events in the Series include the Monsoon Spring Cup 2020 on the 22 and 23 February and the Monsoon Spring Series from the 7 March to the 25 April 2020.

Once again, we assembled a ‘Ghurkha-centric’ crew to tackle the 2020 Four Peaks Race in a Hebe yacht— Tamandu. With another Hebe member, Peter Smyth—as a hill runner and experienced sailor we were well placed and just to be sure, we had Andrew Mills as Sailing Master— with no less than nine Fastnet races under his belt! Both Andrew and Peter had served with the Queen’s Ghurkha Engineers. My 38’ Westerly was herself 26 years old—but the youngest participant. Our other steely hill runners were Rachel Duffell (daughter of a Ghurkha General), David Bulbeck (6th Ghurkhas), and an excellent nonGhurkha addition to our team—Nick Crabb, aged a mere 30 years. The skipper’s pedigree lay with the 2nd Ghurkhas.

The weekend of 11 and 12 January was warmer than in previous years, for which we were grateful and we were to have a full moon in a largely cloudless sky to guide us on our 21-hour odyssey.

We started well from Tai Tam Bay, and after a few deft adjustments of the pole lines by Peter Smyth—who had a long and uneventful spinnaker run to Cheung Sha Beach on Lantau. Rachel and Peter ran Lantau Peak in a creditable time only to find on their return to the beach that we had repositioned Tamandu another 400 metres offshore— giving them a good 1½ km to paddle! But the tactics were sound, as it allowed us to escape the perennial Cheung Sha ‘hole’ which we had wallowed in for a good two to three hours last year. Leaving Shek Kwu Chau to port, we then caught some fresh wind gusting to 25 km/h, which took us round Cheung Chau Rock and across to the west side of Lamma at Lo So Shing.

我們再次組成啹喀兵為主的隊伍，乘坐白沙灣 帆船 Tamandu 出戰 2020 年度的 Four Peaks Race。這次隊中健兒包括跑山好手和資深船員 Peter Smyth，和參加過法斯特耐特賽事至少 九次的 Andrew Mills，二人都曾經在皇家啹喀 工程隊伍任職，後者更充當是次比賽的領航員。 我們對這次賽事，勢在必得！我 38 呎長的帆船 芳齡 26，是這次比賽隊伍中最年輕的一員。其 他跑山健兒包括 Rachel Duffell ( 啹喀上將的 女兒）、David Bulbeck （第六隊成員）和來自 不同背景、年僅三十的 Nick Crabb。船長則曾 經在啹喀兵第二隊效力。 一月十一和十二日那個週末，比往年溫暖，讓人 欣喜。在二十一小時的賽事期間，大部份時間都 圓月高照、萬里無雲。 我們從大潭灣順利出發，Peter Smyth 熟練地 把船桅調整過後，在三角帆拉動下，帆船一直 穩穩向大嶼山長沙泳灘駛去。Rachel 和 Peter 奮力攀越大嶼山山頂，返回泳灘時卻發現 Tamandu 定位偏離岸邊 400 米，導致划槳距 離足有一點五公里。這個戰略最後卻利多於弊， 因為讓我們避開了「長沙黑洞」。去年我們在黑 洞裡苦苦掙扎了兩三個小時，這是一個難忘的 經歷。然後，離開石鼓洲我們乘著 25 公里的疾 風，繞過長州石、橫跨南丫島西面，到達蘆鬚城。

On Lamma we got the tactics right again, landing David and Nick to run Mt Stenhouse in 1 hour 41 minutes—and four minutes after arriving at the pickup point on the east side of the island at Mo Tat Wan, they saw Tamandu sailing in to take them aboard! The only nervous moment was when the depth went down briefly to 6 feet as we passed by the NW corner of Lamma Island after having completed a forensic examination of Li Ka Shing’s wharf at Lamma Power Station on the way north!

Our sailing master had wisely decided that we should don our life jackets on the passage to Lamma, and despite slight contretemps with his own apparatus—that is how we stayed for the ensuing reach to Chesterman Buoy off Stanley. Last year we had a hairy moment crossing the very busy shipping lane in the early hours, but this time we arrived in Stanley with our nerves intact. Here we found another windless hole—but happily, Nick (whose job was as a rowing/paddling instructor with the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club) guided us to an unknown beach on the western shoreline where we landed Rachel and Peter for the, to Violet Hill. This was a huge advantage, as we saw other less knowledgeable crews taking up to an hour to reach Blake’s Pier in Stanley to offload their runners. Our running times were, therefore, longer, but we saved invaluable sailing time.

My wife, Griselda’s traditional delicious stew, was eagerly consumed at this point as those on board waited at anchor for the runners to return. One hour 54 minutes later, they had their hands on the Tamandu’s transom when one of the paddles took flight and into Stanley Bay. In a flash, David tore off all his clothes, less a pair of gloves, his socks and dived in to retrieve the situation in true Cuttack Legion style!

南丫一段，我們再次把握戰略。David 和 Nick 以一小時四十一分攀過山地塘， 來到東岸模達灣匯合點，四分鐘之後，Tamandu 便到達迎接他們返回船上。之 後我們迎風向北，經過發電站時，仔細審視了李嘉誠碼頭。當我們繞過南丫島 西北端，水深突然下跌到只有六呎，算是航程中比較驚險的一幕。 往南丫島途中，船長一邊被自己的裝備搞得手忙腳亂，一邊建議大家穿上救生 衣。我們就這樣穿戴整齊地到達赤柱對出的黃麻角海事浮標。去年我們在清晨 時份到達這個地點，在駛越繁忙的航道時困難重重。而今年到達赤柱時，我們 卻是充滿了信心。雖然此處有另外一個無風的黑洞，但幸好我們有 Nick 這位香 港遊艇會的划艇導師指引大家駛往西邊海岸一處無人知曉的海灘，讓 Rachel 和 Peter下船，攀越紫羅蘭山。其他知識面不廣的隊伍，則紛紛駛到卜公碼頭讓 隊員下船，過程花掉幾乎一小時，讓我們佔盡了優勢。雖然我們隊員花了更多的 時間攀山，但是卻省回寶貴的航行時間。我們到達下錨地點，等待攀山隊員出現。 我太太此時為船上的隊員端出拿手好菜，大家很高興地把美味的燉肉幹掉。一 小時五十四分鐘之後，正當大家倚欄眺望，突然一陣怪風，把其中一支船槳吹 落赤柱灣海面。David 毫不猶疑，把身上衣服脫掉，只剩下一對手套、一雙襪子， 赤條條跳進海裡，異常英勇地把船槳救回。 42

We were then on or way out to Castle Rock off Po Toi— with Rachel and Peter celebrating an excellent run during which they had overtaken two other teams! Peter had been working out where the other boats in our division were on the basis of his aggressive interrogation of runners met on the hills and sail numbers identified on the water, and his computation of the relative positions and handicaps suggested we were up with the leading yachts. With that encouragement, we rounded Castle Rock to starboard and then sailed back amid fluky winds to Nick’s beach— to land David and Nick for the final climb of The Twins.

With dawn showing signs of joining us, they were back on board after 1 hour 56 minutes and we set off for the final mark—Chestermans, but this time leaving it to starboard.

The wind by this time had dropped even offshore, and despite rounding Chesterman it took us a further two frustrating hours wallowing before we could get across the finishing line to the east of Round Island, off Repulse Bay. Nevertheless we were delighted as our sailing tactics had proven to be sound and the running phenomenal.

The ageing lady ‘Tamandu’ could not point as high as some of her more lean and mean colleagues but she had also done us proud.

David and Nick ‘Spliced the mainbrace’ with some powerful Mount Gay rum as we motored back a contented if tired, crew to Hebe for a welcome ‘All Day Breakfast’!

Later, we received confirmation of Peter’s predictions—we had come first in our division of eight yachts, finishing one hour ahead of our nearest challenger on corrected time.

We also picked up the Geriatric Prize for the oldest crew!

A victory for HHYC and for ‘Team Tamandu’!

之後我們啟程往蒲台對出的螺洲白排。Rachel 和 Peter 慶祝前一段的攀山路段 非常順利，而且超越了兩個別的團隊！攀山期間，Peter 積極盤問了多名選手， 獲取珍貴資訊，計算出我們分組裡面其他船隻的位置，並在海面上辨出各艘帆 船的航行編號。按照 Peter 計算的相關船隻位置和讓分情況，我們相信已經名 列前茅。大家猶如打了強心針，右轉繞過螺洲白排。在變幻莫測的風勢中，回航 到海灘，讓 David 和 Nick 上岸，征服最後一站—孖崗山。過了一小時五十六分， 黎明剛至，他們已經完成賽段返回船上而我們也啟航向終點黃麻角進發。 此時連離岸的風勢也轉弱了，雖然成功繞過黃麻角，我們還是掙扎了兩個小時， 才終於越過終點線，來到淺水灣對出的銀洲東岸。對於各項戰略部署成功，加 上攀山賽段成績驕人，大家都非常高興。年紀已經不輕的 Tamandu，雖然未能 傲視同儕，我們依然感到非常自豪。 Peter 和 Nick 喝冧酒慶祝，我們帶著滿足的心情和疲累的身軀啟程回航到白 沙灣遊艇會享用「全天候早餐」。Peter 早前的賽果預測，得到了確認，我們果 然在分組八艘船中取得第一名。修正時間之後，比第二名的船隻領先一個小 時！此外，我們還靠年紀大拿下了耆英獎！白沙灣遊艇會和 Tamandu 團隊大 獲全勝！ 43

Clients with multiple disabilities and vision impairment (MDVI) get out on the water

視覺多重障礙(MDVI)患者航行計劃

With the generous support from the Rusy and Purviz Shroff Charitable Foundation in 2019, The Hong Kong Society for the Blind and the Morning Glory-Day Activity Centre cum Hostel—we have successfully kicked off our Blind Sailing Project for twenty staff members, parents, siblings and volunteers and twenty MDVI clients. The project helped bring about the realisation that lack of sight is no longer a disadvantage. Our MDVI clients have been able to participate in a sport, just like any other person without any limitations. Our Blind Sailing Project has been based on the philosophy that MDVI clients are able to gain the opportunity to learn the fundamental skills and basic principles of sailing.

Our MDVI clients have also learned to sail through hands-on methods in a real-life teaching environment.

Our Blind Sailing project has been very successful because we have trained twenty sailing instructors. We have to say 'thanks' to our sailing instructors; Paul Sir, Mark Sir, Wu Sir and Richard—without whom we wouldn’t be able to sail.

They have transformed us to be passionate, to be patient, to be safety oriented and to enjoy our time at sea!

During our two full days of training across May and July 2019, our team of 20 sailing instructors had the opportunity to learn the fundamental skills of sailing and the basic principles of seamanship. We learned to sail through the use of creative and adaptive methods in a hands-on teaching environment. We had to bear in mind ‘to harness the power of the wind and to experience all the challenges and rewards of sailing’.

We believe in ‘Ability beyond Disability’, and that sailing can enable our MDVI clients to experience fearlessness, independence, intelligence, openness and acceptance.

It is a great adventure not only for our MDVI clients but also for all our carers, staff and volunteers involved.

在 Rusy and Purviz Shroff 慈善基金的慷概支持下，二 零一九年香港盲人輔導會和朝陽中心暨宿舍成功為二十 位員工、家長、兄弟姊妹、義工，和二十位視覺多重障礙 朋友開展視障航行計劃。透過此計劃我們了解到失去 視力並非是一種障礙，同時我們體會到 MDVI 患者也可 以像普通人一樣參與運動。視障航行計劃的意念源於讓 MDVI 患者於現實環境中，親身體驗並且學會到航行基 本的技巧及航海原則。 這個航行計劃非常成功，訓練了二十位航行導師。我們 要向航行導師 Paul Sir、Mark Sir、Wu Sir 及 Richard 講聲「多謝」 。沒有他們教導，我們就不能順利學會航行。 導師們教曉我們要著重安全，同時令我們變得熱情，更 有耐性，也學會享受在海上的時間！ 在二零一九年五月和七月的兩天訓練中，我們從二十位 航行導師團身上，學到基本航行技巧及簡單的航海原則。 我們嘗試在互動環境中發揮創意，並透過訓練增強我們 在船上的應變能力。我們須謹記「要利用風力，體驗所 有航行中的挑戰及收穫」。 我們相信「能力戰勝殘疾」。航行可讓 MDVI 人士體會 到無畏無懼的精神以及獨立、智慧、開放及包容的態度。 這不單是 MDVI 朋友的歷險旅程 ，亦是所有照顧者，員 工及義工的歷險旅程。

It’s about having fun, getting out on the water, and enjoying some of the tastiest seafood in Hong Kong. A perfect way to wrap up the Christmas celebrations. 舉行聖誕尋寶戶外同樂日當天 (12 月 26 日 )，賽事委員在白沙灣遊艇會會船 Hebe One 上碰面時就說起當天天氣有多和喣明媚，對於風速風向卻隻字不 提 ( 只有 3-4 海浬的風也不足為道 )。當然「聖誕尋寶戶外同樂日」的重點， 不在於船隻的轉向有多輕巧﹑升球型帆的效率或抗議對手犯規，而是讓大家 可以藉此出海歡渡佳節、享用一下香港遠近馳名的海鮮佳餚，絕對是不能錯 過的聖誕慶祝活動。

Ichiban wins outright

As the Race Management Team gathered on Hebe One, there was much talk about beautiful blue skies and hardly anything said about wind, approximately 3 to 4 knots, if that. But then the Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s Boxing Day Treasure Hunt is not really about tacking and gybing, hoisting spinnakers or protesting rivals. It’s about having fun, getting out on the water, and enjoying some of the tastiest seafood in Hong Kong. A perfect way to wrap up the Christmas celebrations.

In his briefing, Race Officer Nigel Slattery pointed out to volunteers and guests alike that the first rule on the committee boat was, “One hand for your beer and the other for the boat.” The second and third rule was again, “One hand for your beer and the other for the boat.” Then he made it clear that if a child fell overboard there would be a fee to rescue it. If a husband or wife fell overboard he would be willing to negotiate a price. No-one was offended, everyone laughed, and Hebe One cast off and headed out towards Port Shelter.

The first waypoint was reached in the entrance to Hebe Haven (near the fish farms on the left). With only one competitor in sight (Fuzzy Duck), the committee boat continued to the second waypoint southwest of Shelter Island. Other boats appeared astern as Hebe One made for the third waypoint, positioned near the gap between Kau Sai Chau and Jin Islands.

當天早上九時左右，參加隊伍已陸續在餐廳領取問 題紙準備出發尋寶。而選擇乘坐Hebe One的會員及 其家屬，則優遊自在地跟主持人一同起行。活動甫 開始，風趣幽默的活動主持人Nigel Slattery一臉認 真地向義工及參加者簡單講解在會船上必須要遵守 的三條安全守則—就是要「一手啤酒一手扶穩」； 「一手啤酒一手扶穩」以及「一手啤酒一手扶穩」 ，又笑說成年人要看管好孩子，不要讓他們墮海， 否則員工或會要求先徵費後施救不過如果是參加者 的太太或丈夫，則可商量一下要否完全放棄營救， 令在場各人都按捺不住捧腹大笑。就是這樣，Hebe One在一片笑聲中啟航，正式出發去牛尾海。 根據大會預早發放的航標，船長帶領眾參加者體驗 尋寶過程及樂趣。第一個「寶藏」置於白沙灣的「 入口」處(三星灣對開海面)。各人一起見證參賽船 Fuzzy Duck「奪寶」後，會船便隨即向位於小棕林 附近的第二件「寶藏」進發。當會船駛近滘西洲及 吊鐘洲之間的第三件「寶藏」時，其他參賽船才緩 緩出現。 繞過吊鐘洲西面﹑面向匙洲的北面的是第四個「寶 藏」。而第五個、亦即是遊戲的最後一「寶藏」則 放置在糧船灣作為終點線。每個寶藏都貼有一個英 文字母作為提示，參加隊伍完成遊戲後會得出完整 的一個字，是問題紙上的其中一個答案。所有人其 後直接前往位於糧船灣的有利海鮮漁村進餐及揭曉 答案。

The Ichiban choir

Rounding the western end of Jin Island is the fourth waypoint lay ahead, north of Bay Islet, inside Rocky Harbour. The fifth waypoint on the other side of Rocky Harbour was moved to become the ODM for a finish line with the seafood restaurant, Yau Ley, in the background.

First to approach the finish, under power and well outside line was Fuzzy Duck, with a clear objective… lunch! After a bit of shouting and waving of arms, the helmsman spun the little boat around and backtracked, finishing at quarter past 12.

Next over the line was Windseeker in their orange livery and, right behind, Ichiban singing Bells, Bells, and Bells to the Race Officer. Lazy Piggy was the fourth and last to finish. Incidentally, by this time the wind had built to a good 10 knots and the boats were soon anchored and crews ferried ashore.

Plates stacked high with prawns, noodles, squid, san choi, scallops and more appeared on the tables and the sailors wasted no time in demolishing all that was put before them. Tsingtao beer, white and red wine made for a wonderfully convivial afternoon, not forgetting the little bowls of soy sauce placed outside for those wanting to witness the winter solstice. Only in Hong Kong!

起初錯過了終點線後最後仍 保持輕鬆的姿態成為首名衝 線的Fuzzy Duck。目標非 常明確和清晰—就是前往酒 家享用令人期待的午餐! 在 一片熱烈的歡呼聲及揮手歡 迎下，舵手們輕巧地轉向船 身，沿路返回並於下午12時 15分完成賽事。 接着衝線的是充滿活力的 Windseeker，緊隨其後的是 向賽事主持人唱出尋寶答案 「Bells」的Ichiban，最後是 Lazy Piggy。此時風速忽然 增強至10海浬！完賽后，船 隻立即下錨，讓水手們各自 上岸用膳。 豐富的海鮮令人唾延三尺 大蝦﹑帶子﹑蟶子﹑魷魚等 等，一瞬間已被水手們攻陷 了。聖誕聯歡會少不免盡慶 暢飲啤酒﹑紅酒及白酒。壓 軸娛慶節目還包括用豉油反 射在陽光下觀賞罕有的日偏 食。這特別的天文現象在香 港上演，實屬難得!

A quiz followed with some pretty difficult questions to answer … especially after such a feast. Crews sang Christmas songs and there was even a best-dressed fender competition.

In the end, the Race Officer, unofficially assisted

by Bridget Chan, presented prizes to the overall winner—Ichiban for the race, quiz, best song and best dress fender with 42 points. Windseeker 2nd, Fuzzy Duck 3rd and Lazy Piggy 4th.

Well done to all for keeping such a great club tradition alive. See you again on Boxing Day 2020.

二十四小時慈善小艇賽受惠人士的感謝信 The 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race 2019 was held on 5 & 6 October 2019 and with the presence of all the sailors, charities and 24 Hour Race Committee members involved, an amazing Cheque Presentation Ceremony was held on 15 November 2019 to signify the conclusion of the event. Below are a few of the comments and thanks shared from our long-collaborating charities and participants. 二十四小時慈善小艇賽2019於二零一九年十 月五日至六日舉行。所有船員、慈善團體以及 二十四小時賽事委員會會員都參與於十一月十 五日舉行的支票頒贈儀式，為活動畫上完滿句 號。以下節錄部分和我們長期合作的慈善團體 及參賽者的致謝辭。

Children’s Cancer Foundation

by Lucille Wong, Development Director, Children’s Cancer Foundation Words cannot express enough our deepest gratitude to HHYC for organising the 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race on 5 and 6 October 2019, through which the princely sum of HK$500,000 was raised for the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF). This is the result of a tremendous amount of perseverance and hard work from the 24 Hour Race Committee members and all volunteers involved. Without their support, the event would not have been miraculously, and very successfully, held in the midst of unstable weather and social conditions, let alone the handsome sum raised.

With the permission of your esteemed Club, we would like to allocate the funds raised for prosthetic limb & eye and genetic tests (HK$170,000) and a yearly overseas trip for palliative patients (HK$330,000). The yearly trip is a very important event to our young patients receiving palliative care, and it gives an opportunity for them to find respite from their life-threatening diseases. Often, this might even be their last and only chance to go overseas. The participants are carefully chosen from our palliative cases. Most of them are in a 50

wheelchair, with feeding tubes and carrying oxygen concentrators. CCF is currently the only NGO in Hong Kong organising such trips, and without the support of healthcare professionals, it would be impossible for these patients to make an overseas trip.

Our Sunshine Crew members would also like to sincerely thank HHYC for providing Pico and Quest training, and inviting them to the Open Regatta and the 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race. The races have provided invaluable opportunities for them to strengthen their self-confidence and determination.

We are proud the team won the 2nd runner-up in the Laser Pico category at the 24 Hour Race. This is the result of the unwavering support HHYC has been providing for our team members and the professional training provided by the coaches. We would also like to thank you for the special ‘stamping arrangement’ to help further promote the charities at the carnival, which was very innovative and effective.

Thank you once again for all that you have done for CCF in the past seventeen years, and we earnestly look forward to the upcoming 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race and other events in 2020!

We are, of course, aware how much effort goes into making this event a success and everyone concerned is to be congratulated. It seems that each year the event becomes more successful than the last in spite of the weather and other external factors.

Whilst it is perhaps wrong to single out individuals, we are also aware of the considerable amount of work undertaken by the Chair of the Organising Committee and her deputy. A huge well done to them both for steering the Committee towards their target of raising a million Hong Kong Dollars for the benefit of local charities—a fantastic achievement.

CLUB UPDATES

As I start to pen this report in early February 2020, Kung Hei Fat Choi seems to be, still an appropriate felicitation; whether it still will be when you read this in a few weeks is debatable. Anyway, I trust that you have had a good start to this Year of the Rat and have kept safe and healthy away from all potential sources of the coronavirus. I hope that, by the time you read this, the escalation of cases will have abated and the understandable paranoia will have been proven to be just a false alarm.

Rear Commodore—Sailing

As noted in my article in the previous Hebe Jebes, my time as Rear Commodore Sailing and as a permanent resident of Hong Kong is rapidly coming to an end, as I will retire from work at the end of April 2020 and leave Hong Kong a few weeks later.

This will mean, for the third time, that Carol and I will take absentee membership from HHYC. From first-hand experience though, we know that Hong Kong and HHYC, in particular, never ever leave you even when you leave them. In our case, we can confidently say that we will frequently return, as our daughter, Lian and her soon-to-be husband Sean remain firmly rooted in Hong Kong. As they also live in Sai Kung, you will undoubtedly see us at Hebe throughout the year and think to yourself, ‘haven’t seen them for a while’!

Before I handover to Adam (below), to introduce himself and give you the low-down on current and upcoming sailing events, I will end by reiterating what an honour it has been to be part of the current General Committee. There is an on-going and very focused commitment to bring a whole ambit of issues—from physical (buildings and club infrastructure); to documentation (Articles of Agreement, Bylaws, etc.); to aspects of the way the Club operates, into full compliance with Hong Kong regulations and the Club’s lease. Please take time to enquire about the efforts being made on your behalf, and you will be impressed, no doubt. Don Johnson, you are a star!

ADAM GLENDINNING Rear Commodore—Sailing

I was humbled and honoured when Simon approached me last year, with the prospect of taking over the helm of the Sailing Committee. Simon has done a fantastic job in the past year and a half in the role as Rear Commodore Sailing and leaves me with very big shoes indeed to fill. Simon, as well as his predecessors Bridget and Nicole, have set the bar very high for the way they approached the position, and I can only hope to justify Don, Simon, as well as the rest of the General Committees’ faith in me as I take on this important role in the Club. That said, we have a fantastic team on the Sailing Committee, with Rob and Queenie, and the rest of the sailing office staff, as well as a great General Committee, lead by our Commodore, Don Johnson.

On the water, after a quiet period over the past several weeks, encompassing the Christmas and Chinese New Year breaks, things are set to get rather busy on the racing side over the next few weeks. The Monsoon Spring Series runs from 7 March to 25 April, and kicks things off with an Around the Island Race, allowing yachts and crews an opportunity to get back into racing mode and tune-up for the summer’s eagerly awaited Typhoon Series, commencing 7 June.

On the weekend of the 7 – 8 March, we are also hosting our first Overnight Coastal Race, for IRC and HKPN yachts. This has been a new challenge for the race organisation and management team, and we all look forward to this exciting weekend. Also on the horizon is the Sailor’s Awards Night on 19 March—a fantastic evening to recognise those that make yacht racing at Hebe Haven the wonderful sport it is.

我在二零二零年的二月寫這份報告，雖然你們在幾週後才會看到， 但我也祝各位恭喜發財。相信大家鼠年都有一個好開始，不受新冠 肺炎的影響。希望大家看到這份報告時，確診數字已經減少，但願 之前的一切擔憂都只是虛驚一場 。 在上一期的Hebe Jebes中，我提到自己即將卸任帆船駕駛助理會長 一職，很快便不再是香港永久性居民了。因為我將於二零二零年的 四月尾退休，數週後便會離開香港。這是Carol和我第三次離開白沙 灣遊艇會。以自身經歷來說，我們深信即使離開了香港，白沙灣遊 艇會永遠都不會離開大家。因為我們的女兒Lian及她的未婚夫Sean 都定居香港西貢，所以我們肯定會經常回港。各位日後一定會在白 沙灣見到我們，然後心想「很久沒見了」！ 在我交棒給Adam介紹自己及遊艇會目前和接下來的航行活動前，我 必須説我真的非常榮幸能夠成為執行委員會的一分子。我們一直致 力將所有事務做到完全符合香港法例及本會租契，包括實體的(建築 及會所基建)；文書上的(組織合同，章程等)；以及會所營運方面的 工作。各位不妨花時間了解本會為大家所付出的努力。當你們看到 這一切，心裡不禁浮現「Don Johnson你真厲害！」 各位再見，感謝大家。 水上見。 Simon Jones

1970s MEMORIES OF HHYC Family bonding and a dramatic rescue

Anthony Charter was an HHYC member from 1971 to 2014.

Upon his retirement, he moved back to the UK and spent his time entertaining his grandchildren, gardening, playing tennis and squash. His first Chinese junk—Overdue, was sunk during a typhoon. His second co-owned prawn-sailing junk—Overdraft, suffered a similar fate, but was refloated. Here he writes about a few of his many boating experiences.

In December 1979 my father and I took Toni Anne up to Double Haven for a six-day trip. Over the next 11 years we made nine such trips. These were special times for both of us as so much of our lives we had been apart with me at boarding school in the UK only coming out to Hong Kong for the summer holidays, then with my parents retiring back to UK in 1967.

Our last trip before my father died in 1989, my son Bryan, aged seven, joined us for a couple of nights when we anchored in the beautifully still waters of Sam a Wan, a hidden bay in Double Haven, and my favourite Hong Kong anchorage. Three generations of male Charters overnight in a boat! Quite an achievement.

On the last night of our first trip to Double Haven my father and I were anchored in Camp Cove on the south side of Kat O Chau. A strong northerly front arrived as dusk fell. The wind became fierce hitting the boat with quite violent gusts causing the rigging to vibrate and the whole boat to shudder. We didn’t sleep much because we were concerned that we might drag our anchors. The next day we set off to return to Rocky Harbour and sailed down the ‘Straight and Narrow’ (Chik Mun Tau) and then out into Mirs Bay. By the early afternoon we decided to start motoring. We kept our sails up because there was still a very light breeze. Passing between Fung Head and Fan Tsang Chau and just south east of Tsim Chau off Tai Long Wan, I noticed what looked like a raft on our port beam. It seemed to consist of black flotation matter lashed to a couple of poles.

Suddenly I noticed what looked like a cushion floating about thirty yards behind it. I put the boat round and headed up for a closer look. I said to my father, who had been dozing in the cockpit, “It’s a person!” As we got closer I could see it was a young woman. She was upright but tilted backwards, supported by what looked like an inner tube jammed under her armpits.

She had her eyes shut.

pick her up but would notify the Marine Police on our return. My father quite rightly queried how we would know if she was dead if we didn’t attempt to pick her up.

Hong Kong during the 1970s was inundated with illegal immigrants from China, many travelling from further-afield provinces. Hundreds were crossing into Hong Kong every night.

After the Cultural Revolution in 1967 China refused to take back illegal immigrants but by 1974 it was agreed between China and Britain that they would allow the return of illegal immigrants caught in the City unless they could ‘touch base’, that is, gain a home with relatives or otherwise find proper accommodation, in which case they were permitted to stay.

The first thing was to get the sails down, and we accomplished this quite quickly. All the time whilst doing this I wondered when we did get to her whether we might find her legs mutilated by sharks. Many illegal immigrants had been killed by sharks in the Mirs Bay area. Speed was important. The thought of her slipping out of her ring and being lost when so close to rescue would be tragic.

The swell was still significant, about three feet, and I couldn’t see how I could bring the boat alongside her without running her down so I thought the best thing to do was to hop into the pram dinghy we towed behind, and paddle over to her. I 58

Standing in the dinghy, I drifted back behind Toni Anne but was still attached by the painter. My father had not noticed I was in the dinghy but he had the thought of tying on a longer rope so that I could reach the woman without losing contact with the boat, a sensible precaution, so he gave the painter a sharp tug to bring the dinghy alongside.

我突然發現我腳下的救生艇不停的抖動 , 我在船尾 處摔倒了，然後救生艇上開始進水。水深突然齊到 我的腰部，但在沒有完全浸在水中時，我跑到了船 頭，抓住船的扶手，登上了船。在做這樣的事時的 黃金規則就是，要穿救生衣 , 當然我並沒有這樣做 !

I suddenly found the dinghy whisked from under my feet and fell flat on my back in its stern whereupon the dinghy started to fill with water. I was suddenly waist deep but before completely immersed rushed to the front and grabbed the boat’s rail and clambered aboard. Golden rule—always wear a life jacket when doing this sort of thing, which of course I wasn’t.

“Let’s not panic,” I said more to reassure myself than anything else. My father was still perfectly calm. We left the dinghy to its own devices and concentrated on the woman. We got Toni Anne virtually stationery alongside her, and by reaching down between the deck and the rail amidships I grabbed the sweater on her shoulder. We got her torso out of the water to deck height, but because of the rubber ring we couldn’t pull her in under the rail. With another large heave we got her draped over the rail and soon had her lying on one side of cockpit.

My father rushed down below and collected our sleeping bags which we draped over and around her as we didn’t feel we could manage to get her down into the cabin.

What now to do about the dinghy? We pulled it in to see if we could raise its bow and drain some of the water out of it, but it was heavy and all we succeeded in doing was pulling it under the transom where it was being bashed. I was loathed to just cast it adrift without the prospect of recovering it, but if we didn’t the woman might die on us, and she seemed to be in a bad way. We were later told that 24 bodies were found on this stretch of coast the following day.

I then noticed a motorised junk passing inshore of us about 100 yards away, so I gave it a distress signal. In very poor Cantonese and English I explained the situation and asked if they could recover our dinghy and tow it back to Hebe Haven for me. And with that we set off as fast as we could. Somehow the crew of the motorised junk managed to pump the dinghy out and caught up with us. They attached a longer line to the dinghy’s painter and threw it across to us.

En route my father tried to give the woman artificial respiration by pumping her back, but no water came from her mouth. This had the effect of making her groan so at least we knew she was breathing. My father also hugged her hoping to add his body heat to warm her up. Once, when she came close to consciousness, she gave out a terrified moan when she saw my father leaning over her, who had by this time been burnt bright red by six days on the boat and with his blue eyes must have appeared to the woman as a vision from hell—maybe she thought she had already joined her ancestors!

A couple of hours later we pulled alongside the club jetty and Bosun summoned an ambulance. One bystander commented that if an ambulance turned up first before the police arrived and she got into the urban area she would be allowed to stay, but this was not to be. The police got there first. We later learned that the woman spent four days in hospital before being sent back to China. No doubt she tried again.
