May I start by congratulating everyone involved in the 24-Hour Charity Dinghy Race for making this year’s event such a success, helped greatly by the stellar weather and solid breeze for the entire 24 hours. I would also like to thank everyone who either gave or helped raise money for our charities. The General Committee has approved a total distribution in excess of the total raised to ensure the Club is able to make a meaningful donation to our selected charities, and affirm the Club’s commitment to supporting these worthy causes.

Still on the subject of the 24-Hour Race, it’s timely to congratulate the Para Sailing Team for being the overall winner. The recent successes of Sailability did not stop there though; Puk Chi Yeung won a Bronze at the Open Peace Cup in Hiroshima, Japan, with Albert Lam Kin Wa receiving a Special Award at the same event, while Foo Yuen Wai was 7th of 230 starters in the Turkish Airlines Around the Island Race— well done to all those sailors.

Moving on to the Volvo Ocean Race, preparations are ongoing for the late January arrival of the fleet into Hong Kong from Melbourne. A race village will be established at the end of the old Kai Tak runway under the banner of the Hong Kong Sailing Federation. The three main yacht clubs, plus Sailability, will have a presence at the village for the two weeks or so it is open. We will be looking for volunteers to help out for this period, and Bridget Chan and Rob Allen are managing Hebe’s contribution for the event—so please contact either if you would like to volunteer. The main ‘on the water’ activities are a series of races on the weekend of the 27th and 28th of January, with Harbour racing for the V70s on the Saturday followed by an around Hong Kong Island race on the Sunday. This has the potential to give sailing in Hong Kong a big boost, so I do hope we can all support the event and also enjoy the spectacle that it will offer. Other supporting events are also under preparation, and we will keep you informed as these arrangements are finalised.

Moving to Club Development, the relevant Committee is working with our architect to complete the master planning exercise, following which the various options will be costed. Once this work is complete, the output will be presented in a Members’ forum, to seek feedback and direction from the membership on the preferred options, phasing of development and the way ahead. Included in these options are replacing the speedboat ramp area with a vertical seawall to create more usable area, plus erecting additional boat racks and extending the marina berths to help alleviate the chronic lack of boat storage space at the Club, and Hong Kong in general. We are working towards being able to hold this Members’ forum in the first quarter of 2018.

In the past month GenCom have become aware that many members feel strongly that the Club flag should or should not change. Many feel strongly that it should remain in its original form; others are resolute that it’s time for a change. There will be an announcement shortly for a Members’ Forum at which we will seek Members’ views on the flag and the use of Club branding on printed media and apparel.

As members will no doubt appreciate, in a number of applications of print and screen media, it is appropriate to introduce a wider palette of images and colours to create eye-catching and modern content, whatever the outcome is. We continue to develop these, but will do so within the overall context of the dragon.

• Making the definition clearer between what constitutes an Ordinary Resolution (needing a 50% majority to approve) and a Special Resolution that will need 75% Member approval • Increasing the nomination period for elections of Officers and General Committee Members from the current three days to something like a month; the current period does not allow sufficient time for Club Management to adequately prepare for elections, such as timely notification to the Members of details of those standing for election • Increasing the period that Officers and the General Committee are elected for from one to two years—it is traditional in our club that such elected positions are held for two years and it is felt that by formalising this arrangement the elected Officers and Committee Members will have a better opportunity to serve the Members and help preserve and transfer knowledge between incoming and outgoing Officers and Committee Members. A transition period will be built into this change and the new arrangement is proposed to operate in such a way that, at most, half the elected Officers and Committee would change in any one year.

Again, this will be brought to a Members’ forum for feedback and direction before it is taken to the Government for approval. Once we have Government approval, this will have to be endorsed by a Special General Meeting.

Finally, we have a number of club events coming up over the festive season and I hope you can join in and enjoy what are traditionally fun occasions—let’s hope the weather does the right thing and provides some clear days.

Finally, a related and important part of how the Club is managed centres around the Memorandum and Articles of Association (M&A). These are currently under review to bring them in line with changes to the Companies Ordinance. Given this major review, we will also take the opportunity to look at some aspects of Club management other than compliance, namely:

請容我在此向所有參與 24 小時慈善小船賽的人士道賀，全賴他們的支持，加上整整 24 小時的穩定天氣，令這個活動得以圓滿成功。我也要感謝所有為這個籌款活動出 錢出力的人士。執行委員會已批准分配超過所籌集的善款，以確保本會能夠向選定的 慈善機構作出捐贈，並確認本會支持這些有意義活動的承諾。 繼續談談 24 小時慈善小船賽。恭喜我們的殘疾帆船隊伍成為總冠軍。航能近期的 佳績不止於此; Puk Chi Yeung 在日本廣島舉行的和平盃帆船公開賽奪得銅牌，而 Albert Lam Kin Wa 也奪得特別獎; 符遠威則在 Turkish Airlines Around the Island Race 的 230 名參賽選手中勇奪第七名。恭喜所有船員!

Many thanks to everyone who supported club events over Christmas and the New Year, we hope you will continue to join us in the year ahead. At the time of writing we are in full swing organising the Club’s Chinese New Year events as we enter into the Year of the Dog. We will bring in the CNY with our annual Lion Dancing performances and Boat Blessings on Sunday 25 February as well as traditional culinary delights from our F&B team!

Our annual Burns Supper, Dinner & Dance, will take place on Friday 26 January, celebrating the life of Robert Burns and generally all things Scottish. Just as a reminder, you can keep up-to-date with all our events by following us on Facebook, via our website or by the weekly e-newsletter.

Whilst on events, we are planning plenty of new and exciting additions to our social calendar for 2018 with a ‘Sailor’s Awards Night’, fundraising ‘Race Night’ and ‘Sunset Challenge’ to name a few. We are also engaging more with interest groups and members, who are keen to offer informative and fun talks and seminars throughout the year.

As the temperatures drop and weekends might be spent indoors with family and friends, join us for Hot Pot Nights, a Sunday Roast or a lazy afternoon enjoying our Afternoon Tea Set. We are finalising our winter menu, so watch this space for plenty of exciting ‘Winter Warmers’ and comfort food favourites.

Don’t forget that HHYC can host your parties during 2018, and help celebrate that big birthday, wedding day or social gathering. We are incredibly lucky to be based in one of the most beautiful spots in Hong Kong, with spectacular views to impress your friends and colleagues!

We will also be launching some exciting packages for the Club Boat, Hebe One, ready for warmer days out on the water. And don’t forget, we can also host parties on-board Hebe One for that extra special touch.

The pontoon’s age, the inclement tropical weather and the full occupancy usage are starting to take their toll and therefore it is an urgent requirement to fix the entire marina. The marina is going to be repaired and revamped in early 2018.

This is a good opportunity to remind Members that since the fingers are not designed for the storage of heavy items, but only for docking procedures and general walking, we would be grateful if you could clear the fingers and docks of heavy items and always keep the docks clear for safety reasons. Your cooperation is appreciated in order to maintain a clean, tidy and safe club environment.

Moreover, we noticed that the South Pontoon is being abused by boats of nonmembers running commercial activities despite the patrolling activity of the club staff.

In order to enforce the Club’s rules, I request Members’ cooperation in providing boat details if they notice such activities, given that any form of commercial activity is a breach of the Club’s rules and is absolutely prohibited.

Hardstand A brand new 12-tonne forklift is on its way from the US and is expected to be in operation by January, so we can expect smooth and easy 2018 lifting operations.

In order to improve the safety of hardstand operations we have installed a falling arrest system that our staff will be using to climb the rack structure during typhoon preparations. All the staff have been trained and have obtained certificates for the use of this new safety system.

Boatyard The boatyard was very busy in 2017 and all equipment and machines have been regularly checked, inspected and surveyed to operate safely in 2018. Since the summer season is fast approaching, I would recommend that you book in advance with the boatyard for your regular boat maintenance so you can be ready to sail as soon as the weather is warm and nice.

Swing Mooring After the annual diving inspection all swing moorings were fixed and secured. Now we will focus on the double pontoon project which will enable us to increase the mooring capacity of the Club by using a swinging platform connected at the mooring. The first platform has been launched already and after the required survey it will be positioned for a 12-month test. We will keep you posted.

Members Recently many Members have been upgrading their boats. I would like to remind Members that to replace your existing craft you must obtain approval in writing from the Club BEFORE the replacement craft is placed on any club marine facility, and if you are intending to sell your boat keep in mind that the Club shall have no obligation whatsoever to transfer any club marine facility from one Member to another Member upon the sale of a boat that occupies either a club swing mooring, pontoon berth or hardstanding.

For those who have not used their boat for a long time, please be reminded that the Club Operations Committee may give the Member a warning and request that the boat is removed and the facility allocated to another Member on the relevant marine facilities waiting list.

浮橋老化、惡劣的熱帶天氣和百分百使用率的代價已逐漸浮現，因此當務之急是維修 整個碼頭。碼頭的維修和改造工程將於 2018 年初展開。 這個也是提醒會員的好機會。由於長板不是為存放重型物件而設，而是用作接駁和一 般的步行而設，我們希望各位會員能清理放在長板的重型物件，時刻保持暢通，以策 安全。感謝各位同心合力保持會所環境清潔、整齊和安全。 此外，我們發現，即使有本會員工巡邏，仍有非會員在南浮橋進行商業活動。為了執 行本會的規例，如會員發現有關活動，請向我們提供有關資料。此類商業活動是違反 本會規例，是絕對禁止的。

岸位 全新的 12 噸重叉車正由美國運送來港途中，預計 1 月可以投入服務，相信 2018 年 的起重操作會很順暢和便捷。 為了改善岸位的安全，我們安裝了防墮系統，讓員工在颱風吹襲期間爬上船架。所有 員工已接受使用新安全系統的訓練，並取得證書。

船廠 船廠在 2017 年非常繁忙，所有設備和機器都已接受定期檢查和測試，來年可繼續安 全使用。由於夏季很快來臨，我建議會員提早預約，為船隻進行定期檢查，以便天氣 回暖和良好時可以盡快出海。

浮泡泊位 進行年度潛水檢查後，所有浮泡泊位已進行修理和固定。現在我們會集中處理雙浮橋 泊位工程，連接平台與浮泡泊位，增加本會的浮泡泊位空間。首個平台已就位，進行 必要的檢查後會進行為期 12 個月的測試。 我們會繼續為大家提供最新消息。

會員 最近許多會員都為船隻進行升級。我在此提醒會員，如要更換船隻，新船在本會任何 海事設施使用前，必須先取得本會的書面批核；如要出售船隻，請緊記如果出售的船 隻有使用本會的浮泡泊位、浮橋泊位或岸位，本會沒有義務把海事設施的使用權從一 個會員轉移至另一個會員。 本會執行委員會也可能會向長期沒有使用船隻的會員發出警告信，要求移走船隻，以 便騰出位置，讓海事設施輪候名單上的會員使用。

31 Race Festival Closes 帆船嘉年華閉幕

Lamma Fun Day was established 17 years ago by a group of caring individuals to raise funds for Child Welfare Scheme (CWS) in Nepal. It is the longest-running community music festival in Hong Kong. Over the years, Lamma Fun Day has raised over HKD $3m, allowing CWS to continue the important work of helping Nepal’s poor and destitute children. CWS operates vocational training schools and hospices, helping victims of child labour and human trafficking recover and reintegrate into society by providing a safe haven, education and much needed support.

I have been supporting CWS and the Lamma Fun Day since working for Action Asia Magazine back in 1999. Having lived on Lamma for my first five years in Hong Kong, my connection to the island and its many fine inhabitants is strong.

Last year, I told everyone about Lamma Fun Day and suggested we take our boats over to anchor in the bay and enjoy the festivities. Five boats joined in and we had a great weekend partying and enjoying cruising life. Eagles Quest and Malarky went on an epic four day island hop around HK after this trip.

This got me thinking. What if we organised a Cruise Owners Association rally/race to the Lamma Fun Day, enjoyed a great

weekend and helped raise some money for CWS? That’s exactly what I did!

First I approached Rob Winter about the idea and received full COA support. So I attended the COA committee meeting and pitched the idea to them, and thus the COA – Douglas Cup was born. Named after Douglas Maclagan, the founder of CWS, it is a normal two-stage COA pursuit race.

4 November turned out to be windy with a bit of a swell coming in from the strong Northeast Monsoon wind. Eight boats made respective starts. Four boats were from Sai Kung: Ricochet skippered by Julie Mackenzie, GA skippered by Arthur Ho, Eagles Quest skippered by Brian Heineken and Malarky 1 skippered by yours truly Sean Baylis. Joining from the South Side was Inner Peace skippered by Dave Balman, and Simplicity from Royal, skippered by Sunny Chai. Windy, rough conditions saw Eagles Quest and Malarky 1 retire early, motors on and direct course set for Lamma. We did not want to miss out on the great music and festivities on the beach.

By the time we arrived at Power Station Beach the party was in full swing. We all made our way ashore to enjoy the great music and drink lots of beer for charity. A big thanks to San Miguel

CRUISING for sponsoring five kegs of beer which were donated to the bar, as well as Sails East and HK Aqua-bound Centre for their generous sponsorship of the prizes.

Prize-giving was a bit messed up as we were not ready at the appointed time and then Douglas the founder was called away, so we snuck in a quick photo session while the next band was warming up, my apologies to all for this impromptu prize-giving.

Congratulations to Simplicity, skippered by Sunny Chai, as the winner of the 1st COA Douglas Cup. 1st runner up was GA, and the 2nd runner up was DayDream.

We then enjoyed a great night of home-grown music. Lamma Fun Day really is FUN! Thanks to all the participants and sponsors for making this 1st (annual) COA Douglas Cup a great success. We raised HKD 6,450 for CWS! Next year we hope to have twice as many boats and we will make the course much shorter so we all arrive at Lamma Fun Day at about 1pm!

南丫同樂日 (Lamma Fun Day) 在 17 年前由一批善心人士 發起，目的是為尼泊爾的 Child Welfare Scheme (CWS) 籌款，也是本港歷史最悠久的一個音樂節。多年來，南丫同 樂日已籌得超過三百萬港元善款，讓 CWS 繼續協助尼泊爾 的貧困兒童。CWS 在當地設立職業培訓學校和收容所，向 童工和販賣人口的受害者提供安全的庇護所、教育和緊急支 援，幫助他們康復和重新融入社會。 我在 1999 年為 Action Asia Magazine 工作時，開始支持 CWS 和南丫同樂日。我在香港的首五年都是住在南丫島， 我跟這個小島和島上的居民有着密切的聯繫。

去年，我跟所有人提及南丫同樂日，並建議我們把船隻停泊 在海灣，一起參加同樂日。結果有五艘船參加，我們渡過了 一個很棒的航海周末。 Eagles Quest 和 Malarky 更在同樂 日之後進行了四天的香港環島遊。 這讓我有了一個念頭。何不趁南丫同樂日舉辦一個船主協會 拉力賽/帆船賽，既可享受一個美好周末，也可以為 CWS 籌 款?這正是我已做的事情! 我首先向 Rob Winter 提出這個建議，並得到船主協會 的全 力支持。於是我在 COA 的委員會會議上提出這個想法，就這 樣，船主協會 Douglas Cup 便誕生了。這項賽事以CWS 的 創辦人 Douglas Maclagan 命名，是兩階段 COA 追逐賽。 11 月 4 日的風勢很大，還伴隨東北季候風而來的一些潮 漲。八艘船相繼出發。其中四艘船在西貢出發，分別是 由 Julie Mackenzie 掌舵的 Ricochet 、Arthur Ho 掌舵 的 GA 、Brian Heineken 掌舵的 Eagles Quest 和本人 Sean Baylis 掌舵的 Malarky 1 。來自南面的船隻有 Dave Balman 的 Inner Peace 和 Sunny Chai 掌舵的香港遊艇 會船隻 Simplicity 。由於風勢強勁和海面情況欠佳， Eagles Quest 和 Malarky 1 被迫提早退出賽事，發動馬達直接向南 丫島進發。我們可不想錯過海灘上的美妙音樂和盛會。

The 15th 24HR Charity Dinghy Race is now over but it has left behind many good memories for all those who took part in whatever capacity, or even just went along as spectators.

We sailed with a reduced fleet of 26 boats due to our chosen date for the event clashing with other events taking place in Hong Kong. However, this fact did little to dull the enthusiasm and competitiveness of the sailors who, as usual, varied in age from seven to 70.

As all will testify, the weather was excellent all weekend with a good wind, blue skies and a very pleasant temperature throughout. Several larger gusts of wind proved the undoing of several sailors, however, with a small number of capsizes— Arnie Highfield being the star attraction due to a notable double capsize with two different crews on board! I told you I would keep that quiet Arnie!

• 1st Place: Winners this year were the Para Sailors in their new Hansa 303 boat HKGTA which completed an amazing 99 laps.

Fortunately, the sponsors were there at the finish, so they must have gone away satisfied with their investment. Coming in close behind were: • 2nd Place: Macau Sailing Association – F3 • 3rd Place: Operation Breakthrough – B1 Very well done to all the teams and every single person who took part! Also, a very big thank you to all the staff, members and volunteers who worked to make the event a success for the 15th time.

We understand that HKD 300,000 was raised for charity from the event. This sum excludes what charity stalls managed to make through their own stall / booth sales.

As a footnote, planning for the next event has already started!

A new committee is being formed (volunteers most welcome) and the event dates for 2018 will be announced at a very early stage after some research into what the other yacht clubs have already arranged within their busy sailing calendars.

Our Para Sailors travelled to Hiroshima in October to enter the 10th Open Peace Cup in two Hansa class boats. This was a 10 nation competition which amongst others included Australia, UK, New Zealand, Brazil and Singapore in addition to a strong Japanese presence.

Entering in the Hansa 303 (single-handed) class, PUK Chi Yeung came home a medal winner in third place, having lost out to Japanese sailors who finished 1st and 2nd. Adding to that fantastic achievement, LAM Kin Wah, Albert was awarded a special prize for consistency, having finished in 5th or 7th place in each of the races in the same class. Our other single-handed entries finished 7th, 13th, 16th and 19th.

Our double-handed sailors did very well too, finishing in 6th, 12th and 26th place overall.

The race series was a forerunner to the 11th Peace Cup / Hansa World Championships in October 2018 where the organisers hope to have 200 Hansa entries. Yes, we’ll be there!

我們的傷殘帆船選手在 10 月到了日本廣島參加第 10 屆和平 盃帆船公開賽的兩個 Hansa 級別賽事。這次賽事的選手來 自 10 個國家，包括澳洲、英國、新西蘭、巴西、新加坡， 以及東道主日本的選手。 出戰 Hansa 303 (單手)級別的 PUK Chi Yeung 勇奪第三名，僅次於奪得冠亞的日本選 手。同一級別的 LAM Kin Wah, Albert 也取得 卓越成績，以第五名或第七名完成賽事，得到 等別獎。我們參加其他單手賽事的選手也分別 取得第七名、第 13 名、第 16 名和第 19 名的 佳績。 我們的雙手級別選手也有不俗的表現，分別取 得總成績第六名、第 12 名和第 26 名。 這次賽事是將於 2018 年 10 月舉行的第11屆和 平盃/ Hansa世界錦標賽的前哨戰，賽會希望 到時有 200 艘 Hansa 船參賽。當然，我們一 定會參加!

SAILABILITY Huge congratulations to FOO Yuen Wai who became the first Para sailor / wheelchair user to race in a 2.4mR single-handed yacht and complete the Round the Island Race. Not only that, he came in 7th overall on corrected time.

This is a record which will most likely stand for some time… although other Para Sailors are already considering whether they will enter next year!

Given the ‘chop’ and swell in the usual locations during the race, Wai did extremely well to avoid filling with water given the small freeboard on the 2.4mR. As one other sailor commented, “When I saw him in front of me, his boat looked like a radio-controlled toy!”

Given the lack of wind for most of the afternoon, not to mention the rainy and cold conditions, a huge well done from us all at Sailability and the Hong Kong sailing community. It was a remarkable achievement which will be remembered for many years to come.

FEATURES Hong Kong joined the nautical world in celebration as the 13th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race set out from Alicante, Spain this past October, launching the official countdown to Hong Kong’s first ever hosting of this historic race.

The event marked 90 days to when the seven yacht Volvo Ocean Race fleet is expected to sail into Victoria Harbour.

The Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong will be the 5th of 12 stages on this year’s 45,000 mile nautical adventure with the boats expected to arrive Saturday 20 January 2018 as they complete legs in Alicante, Lisbon and Cape Town prior to making the 6,657-mile voyage from Melbourne to Hong Kong’s iconic harbour.

It will be the biggest sailing yacht event in Hong Kong’s history and one which the Hong Kong Sailing Federation believes will inspire a new generation of sailors to take to the waters.

Charlie Manzoni, Vice President, the Hong Kong Sailing Federation enthused, “The first ever Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong is the culmination of significant efforts by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation and Home Affairs Bureau to attract this premier sailing yacht event to local waters. Hong Kong is proud to host a stopover of the 2017/2018 Volvo Ocean Race.

“We join the entire city in celebrating another world-class event marking the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and are eagerly anticipating the Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong’s impact in raising the awareness city-wide of sailing and our thriving sailing community.”

For inspiration, the city needs to look no further than its first ever entry in the race (Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag). Skipper David Witt and Hong Kong-born sailor Tiger Mok spoke to Volvo Ocean Race just before the first leg of their journey in Spain.

From the deck of Scallywag in Alicante, Tiger Mok affirmed, “We are definitely ship-shape and have been preparing very hard for the last few months. We’re very proud to be on the starting line this morning. It’s pretty emotional actually, for both the entire team and for [skipper David Witt] Witty and me. It’s something we both have dreamed of for many, many years.

Mok added, “It’s a very important day and we are looking forward to it, but we just have to treat it as a normal day of

sailing, like we’ve been doing all of our lives. We are just going to give it our best shot. We’re especially looking forward to sailing into Hong Kong's harbour and seeing all of our families and friends from the sailing community and seeing everyone who is supporting us and following us in this race.”

In October the city held a day-long celebration for the Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong at Harbour City Ocean Terminal, which also featured giveaways, face tattoos, photo opportunities, drawing competitions for the kids and an appearance by Wisdom the Albatross, the Volvo Ocean Race Mascot.

Passers-by were also invited to write their messages of support on a special boat sail erected at the press conference venue.

Wisdom also took part in a grinding challenge against some of Hong Kong’s top water sport stars, much to the delight of those gathered.

Visitors were additionally treated to an exclusive first glimpse of the free Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong Race Festival, which will be hosted at Kai Tak Runway Park from 17 - 31 January 2018.

FEATURES The 3D animated video showcased some of the exciting entertainment on offer during the Festival, which will include 15 days of entertainment, food and drink, music, interactive exhibitions, performers, giveaways, virtual reality displays, and of course plenty of sailing, with admission completely free.

Grant Calder, Director, Hong Kong Port commented, “Hong Kong is going to be treated to a visual delight with the 10-storey high yachts expected to sail in to Victoria Harbour to a cheering crowd welcoming them to Kai Tak Runway Park which will act as their home base and an entertainment hub for the Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong stopover.”

Calder added, “With Hong Kong having its first ever team entry in the around-the-world sailing race, we are certain the people of Hong Kong will come out to Kai Tak Runway Park to support their home team and enjoy the free festivities.”

FEATURES 為慶祝第十三屆 Volvo Ocean Race 環球帆船賽在本日 （10 月 22 日）於西班牙阿利坎特正式展開，以及香港首次 主辦賽事分站，Volvo Ocean Race 香港站大會聯同香港 帆船體育界在今日舉行盛大的慶祝及倒數活動。 倒數活動的舉行意味著距離 7 支參賽船隊的賽船駛進香港維 多利亞港只剩下 90 日。 在 Volvo Ocean Race 環球帆船賽長達 45,000 海里的航 程中，香港分站是十二個分站中的第五個。參賽船隊經過西 班牙阿利坎特、葡萄牙里斯本、南非開普敦及澳洲墨爾本四 個賽段後，將會從墨爾本駛往香港，經過六百多海里的賽 程後，預計將於 2018 年 1 月 20 日星期六到達香港維多利 亞港。 這將是香港歷史上最大型的帆船體育盛事。香港帆船運動總 會認為，盛事將會吸引香港新一代更積極投身水上運動。

Whether you are a responsible coxswain or the rowdiest passenger, it is important to stay safe at sea during this time of fun and celebration. Here are some safety tips for the holidays, brought to you by Hong Kong’s Marine Department:

Before the vessel departs, take note of where the vessel's emergency exits are.

Note the location of lifejackets and learn how to put them on once on-board a vessel.

Parents should look after children and ensure they are in a lifejacket at all times.

Vessels must refrain from overloading or speeding and should be covered by proper third party risks insurance and have a valid operating licence.

For their safety, passengers should avoid clustering on one side of the vessel. Passengers should stay calm in an emergency situation and follow the instructions of the coxswain and crew.

The coxswain or crew should not operate a vessel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The coxswain must comply with the "International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972" and its amendments.

The coxswain and crew should follow the directions of the Marine Department or Marine Police officers.

The coxswain should not rush away from the viewing area immediately after the end of a major event, and should move alongside piers in an orderly manner to allow passengers to disembark safely.

Please observe marine traffic regulating measures when participating in major events at sea.

For public safety, ferry services will only be resumed around 50 minutes after a fireworks display.

FEATURES Words by Ginger Ninja (real names withheld to protect the innocent)

I should like to tell you a story about a slow and inexorable descent into a crash, in other words, one of those broaches which have the crew gazing at the sky and the water only to find them crosswise.

Why tell such a story?

There is a feature of experience which somehow denies its logical destiny, which is to say, the wisdom to proceed wisely.

Somehow, human perfidy intervenes to interrupt this process and diverts its course. In my story, the experience of the crew, which comprised certain sailors of ‘international’ grade with an average age north of 60, was countermanded by the well known ‘NEED FOR SPEED’.

To begin at the beginning...

Our fearless leader, a snowy-haired gent of great sailing experience, tactical genius and raw cunning, announced that he would "take the foredeck." At some 70+ years young, this was quite an announcement.

The second cog in this ‘machine of destiny’ was made when our hyperactive Ginger Ninja, a man not known for waiting for the voice of command, decided to take the mast and thus control the hoist—a hoist that he was likely to initiate well before anyone else thought of it.

So here we are, blowing hard and rounding Cape Collinson.

Not at all perturbed by the lack of spinnakers ahead of us...

Mr. All Lines, the redoubtable cockpit crew, was somewhat preoccupied with tailing topping lift, fore guy, spinnaker guy and sheet, or even getting the jammers to work.

The Feeble Girl (and nutritional consultant) was struggling with the helm (and the growing realisation that she had neither a main trimmer nor anyone on the spinnaker sheet, which had been made fast...

At this next moment, I must pause. Pause to paint one of those moments where time moves very slowly and memories are grooved deep.

Whilst the commander looked on from the bow, the Ninja moved rapidly to the waist, on what would conventionally remain the windward side. At this, of all moments, remembering that his car keys are still in his pocket.

A slow and graceful pendulum outpaced the helm's attempt to transfer tiller to ‘tooth grip’ whilst snatching at untended sheets...

The net result? One of those wipe-outs that have you standing waist deep in water, thankful that she's a ‘tough little boat’ (and owned by someone else)!

The situation was quickly recovered, all on board accounted for and for a few minutes at least, all were very content with white sails...

We sail on, but do we learn anything?

The tactical genius and commander was on the bow, head down and struggling with the pole jaws.

After a perfunctory pole set and half a pre feed, the Ginger Ninja was already hoisting the (huge) orange kite (not good if you wish to remain unnoticed).

FEATURES 我想告訴你一個關於緩慢而無情撞毀的故事，換句話說，有 船員凝視天空和海水，發現它們交叉了。

可怕的駕駛艙船員 All Lines 先生，已經被後面的頂部升降 裝置、fore guy 、大三角帆和帆布干擾，甚至設法令干擾 器運作。

為甚麼要說這種故事? 有一種 經 驗 的 特 點 在某 種 程 度 上 否 定 了 它 的 邏 輯 命運，這 就是行事智慧。不知怎的，人類總是作出干涉來打斷這個過 程，並把事情扭轉。在我的故事裏，我們船員的經驗，包括 某些平均年齡在 60 歲以上的「國際」級船員，受到了眾所 周知的「需要速度」的制肘。 從頭說起... 我們那位無所畏懼、具有豐富航海經驗的領袖，一位戰術天 才兼狡猾的白髮蒼蒼紳士，宣佈他將「掌控前甲板」。在 70 多歲而言，這是一個頗了不起的宣佈。

那個無知的女孩（兼營養顧問）正在與舵搏鬥（而且越來 越意識到她沒有一個主要的見風使舵者或任何人在大三角 帆布上，而且速度已經很快了... 這一刻我要停一停。停在這一個時間移動得非常緩慢，而 且記憶深刻的時刻。 當指揮官從船頭往上看時，Ninja 迅速地移動到中間，保持 迎風面的傳統方式。這一刻，要記着他的車匙還在他的口 袋裏。 一個緩慢而優雅的擺動阻止了舵手把舵柄轉移到「抓柄」 的企圖，同時抓緊無人看管的帆布……

這個「命運機器」中的第二個齒輪，是我們那位多動的而從 不知道要等待命令的Ginger Ninja決定拿起桅杆來控制起重 裝置—一個可能在任何人想起它之前會升起的起重裝置。

結果? 這些毀滅性的行動令你要站在水中央，幸好「她」是 一艘堅強的小船，而且是屬於別人的!

我們就是這樣在哥連臣角一帶迎着強風，絲毫不受看不見前 面大三角帆的影響……

情況很快就回復正常了，所有船員都齊全，至少在幾分鐘 內，他們都很滿意白帆……

那位戰術天才和指揮官正在船頭，低着頭與桿鉗搏鬥。

我們繼續航行，但是，我們學會了甚麼?

經過敷衍地設置桿子和一半的 pre feed 工作， Ginger Ninja 已經升起了巨大的橙色風箏（如果要忽視它好像不太好）。

First, we will encourage the Club to use less plastic and polystyrene in the upcoming year. Last year, we took a step forward with the club ban on sales of all single use plastic water bottles. This was a great start, but there is still much more to be done. In fact, we are hoping to make all HHYC events plasticfree and polystyrene-free in 2018.

As for glass recycling, we have recently arranged for Hong Kong Glass Reborn to collect glass for Recycling—for free— from our Restaurant and Club area. Bins will be delivered soon, and the collection service will start in January.

We also have been in contact with a contractor who is willing to collect clean polystyrene and tetra packs, once rinsed with the plastic spout cut out. We will arrange a collection point at HHYC so that we can begin recycling these as well. It is worth noting that this service is also free of charge.

One last reminder: When recycling items at the Club, please make sure to clean everything and place it in the correct bins.

We hope you will work alongside us to encourage good recycling habits at our Club.

O

n a chilly Tuesday night in December, a group of volunteers from the Club, corralled by Nicole, gathered together in the heart of Sham Shui Po. \As we waited for everyone to arrive, we amassed a heap of bags and boxes between us, all stuffed full of items ready to be handed out to the homeless population in the surrounding community. Handouts ranged from sandwiches and drinks to clothes, bedding and toiletries.

The event, called a Kindness Walk, was conducted in partnership with local charity ImpactHK. The Charity’s founder, Jeff Rotmeyer, joined us for the evening and began by clarifying the purpose of our mission. He explained, “Every Kindness Walk is as simple as it sounds: it’s all about showing kindness. While giving out much-needed items is a big part of this, the walks are also about building connections with Hong Kong’s homeless, who too often end up marginalised. The aim is to build trust and familiarity with those we are trying to reach, and once we do that we can put them on a path to a new life.”

Our task was to walk around the district, visiting several different homeless communities and handing out all the items we’d brought to the people we met there. Thanks to the generosity of HHYC members, we got a great workout lugging everything from bananas to toothbrushes to donated clothing all around the neighbourhood for the next hour or so. We encountered and spoke to a large number of people in need, and note with gratitude that there were enough handouts to go around. The 130 pairs of socks we brought as our offering were well received.

Jeff added, b“While this walk may sound like a simple intervention, it can still have a large impact.” He shared with us a few stories about individuals he’d met from doing regular Kindness Walks, who he’d then been able to assist in finding jobs, getting therapy and even obtaining housing.

The organisation hopes to have a few more people on this path in early 2018, and will continue growing and impacting more lives while keeping in mind that it all starts with basic kindness.

If I’m honest, I was a little nervous, but inquisitive, of exactly what the whole evening would entail. I’d worked with the homeless before in the UK for my father’s charity, Homeless in Blackpool, but Sham Shui Po seemed an entirely different kettle of fish. I was soon to find out. Some of the homeless communities we met were what most would imagine as ‘stereotypical street sleepers’ with nothing but a bag of belongings and a blanket on the ground.

Some were shooting up drugs with syringes in the middle of the park, which was sad to see. But the image that really surprised me was the huge community of people living in tiny self-fabricated ‘homes’ they had assembled out of plywood, pallets and tarps salvaged from nearby markets. They had windows, doors with little locks on them and were arranged side-by-side in a ‘terrace’ under a flyover. They were in fact ‘homes’—an entire microcosm of Hong Kong that I hadn’t seen before. It was humbling.

When I went on the Kindness Walk with ImpactHK I had no idea of the sheer number of homeless in the Sham Shui Po area. I had been told about the homeless community there, and had read reports about it but had yet to see it for myself. It was good to see that NGOs like Impact HK are helping them, particularly with food and clothing as these people seem to have fallen through the safety net of the Social Welfare Department for one reason or another. After all, a reversal of fortune can happen to anyone.

The walk really brought home how deep rooted homelessness is in Hong Kong. The people we met weren’t just sleeping rough, they’d been there so long that they’d built makeshift homes and communities in areas where most Hong Kongers would never go.

It’s a sign of a systemic problem, and an experience that really changed my perception of homelessness in Hong Kong.

For me, the most important part of what this charity does is building bridges between Hong Kong’s homeless communities and ourselves. When people are left homeless and jobless they are cut off from the normal rhythms of society. It is a kind of invisibility. Handing out a sandwich is simple, but it reassures people that we can still see them.

While homelessness is a hot topic in everyday news, it is easy for us to view it as a distant problem we can ignore or as some statistic in a government report. The Walk gave us a chance to have a small chat and get to know these people, and a little smile from them is enough to remind me that they are living people with feelings and needs.

坦白說，我有點緊張，也好奇整個晚上會發生甚麼事情。我曾 在英國我父親的慈善團體 Homeless in Blackpool 為一些無家 可歸者工作，但深水埗完全是兩個世界。 我很快便發現了這一 點。我們遇到的一些無家可歸人士大多數是人們所想像的那種 『典型露宿者』，身旁只有一袋物品和一條毯子。有些人在公 園中央注射毒品，令人嘆息。但真正使我感到意外的場景是， 許多人都是生活在一個小小的自製『家園』裏，這個『家』是 以從附近街市拾來的膠板、托盤和防水布搭建而成的。他們有 窗戶，門上有一些小小的鎖，是天橋下的『排屋』。事實上， 這就是『家園』，是我前所未見的香港縮影。 這真震撼人心。

對我來說，這個慈善機構最重要的工作就是 在香港無家可歸者社區和我們自己之間架起 橋樑。當人們無家可歸和失業時，他們從社 會的正常節奏被切斷開來。這是一種被忽視 的現像。派發三文治的工作很簡單，但能讓 他們知道仍然有人關心他們。

Kaylee Morrison 雖然無家可歸者是日常新聞中的熱門話題， 但我們很容易將其視為一個可以忽略的遙遠 問題，或只是政府報告中的一些統計數據。 這次活動讓我們有機會跟他們聊天，認識他 們，他們的一個微笑已足以提醒我他們是有 感覺和有需要的活生生的人。

Rear Commodore—Sailing

In 2017, we introduced our new HHYC Standard Sailing Instruction (SSI) and HHYC Policy on Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs). The Policy on PFDs is HHYC’s first formal document to set out the standards in respect of carrying and wearing PFDs, with effect from 1 November 2017. Any yacht competing in a race organised

by HHYC and dinghy sailing shall comply with the standards. For details, please check our website under the yacht racing section.

Safety is always our main concern!

Moreover, last year was also a memorable year for me. Windseeker, my S&S 36-foot won overall 1st place in HKPN Division A in the 11th China Cup International Regatta which took place from 26 – 29 November in the waters of Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

This was my second time representing HHYC while winning this Regatta. The last win was in 2012. It’s great to share my joy with you!

With over 1,500 sailors from 40 countries, the China Cup is a great chance for our youth and adult sailors to compete in a very international race. Next year we are thinking of sending two HHYC J80 teams to join this event.

For 2018, we have many plans for promoting yacht/dinghy sailing and racing. To encourage more sailors, the Club has designed some training courses on racing that include the Keelboat Race Training on J80s and the Spinnakers and Trapeze Training on RS Quests. Round the year we will also organise sailing seminars and fun sailaway and overnight events like the Full Moon Party and Beach BBQ Rally for sailors as well as non-sailors to share the fun of sailing and enjoy an outing together.

Apart from the above, we will organise a Sailors’ Awards Night in mid-March to present awards to recognise our HHYC sailors and boats for their outstanding performance and contribution to sailing.

2018 新年快樂! 在 2017 年，我們推出了新的白沙灣遊艇會標準帆船指令 (SSI) 和救生衣 政策 (PFDs) 。救生衣政策是白沙灣遊艇會第一份規定穿戴救生衣標準的 正式文件，已於2017 年 11 月 1 日生效。任何參加白沙灣遊艇會舉辦的帆 船賽事的船隻均需符合有關標準。詳情請瀏覽本會網頁的帆船賽事一欄。 安全至上! 此外，去年對 Windseeker 來說是難忘的一年。我這艘 S&S 36 呎船在 11 月 26 日至 29 日在香港和深圳水域舉行的第 11 屆中國盃國際帆船賽 的 HKPN A 組奪得總冠軍。這是我第二次代表白沙灣遊艇會在這項賽事 中勝出。對上一次已是 2012 年了。我很高興跟大家分享這份喜悅! 中國盃帆船賽有來自 40 個國家超過 1,500 名船員參加，是年輕和成人船 員參加國際賽事的好機會。來年我們考慮派出兩隊白沙灣遊艇會 J80 隊 伍參賽。 我們在 2018 年有許多推廣帆船和小船運動的計劃。為了鼓勵更多船員參 加，本會設計了一些賽事訓練課程，包括 J80s 和大三角帆的龍骨船賽事 訓練，以及 RS Quests 的 Trapeze 訓練。年內我們也會舉辦帆船研討 會、趣味航海和過夜活動，例如滿月派對和海灘燒烤活動，讓船員和非船 員共享帆海的樂趣。 除了以上的活動之外，我們將於 3 月中舉行船員頒獎之夜，表揚白沙灣遊 艇會船員的出色表現和對帆船運動的貢獻。 水上見!

The new forklift is on its way and will be arriving soon. It will then be available for our members to use.

The dual mooring system has been tested in the water by engineers. We hope the Marine Department will grant permission soon so that it can be used shortly.

Rear Commodore­—Operations

Since the adjustment of the marine facilities fee in 2016, the Committee has carefully considered what would be reasonable for members to pay in the future and has come up with an adjusted marine facilities fee. The adjustment is expected to balance out the effects of inflation over the past two years, pay for the replacement of facilities to improve our services and cover various maintenance expenses.

We recently received complaints about some members passing on their Membership Cards to third parties. We wish to remind all members to take into account their own rights and those of other members, and use their Membership Cards properly by not passing them to any third party. Your membership may be affected if you are found to be in violation of our club rules.

Recently we received an appreciation email from one of our fellow members. This member experienced an emergency situation due to a sudden weather change under the Strong Monsoon signal, which brought two-metre waves, a temperature drop to just nine degrees and wind speeds of grade four or five. They called our Ops staff for assistance.

Mr Charlie Lai, our Marine Manager, rendered assistance as an extra course of his normal duty to bring the member to a safe spot before continuing his work.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank this member for his appreciation and encouragement to our Ops team, and the extra work from Charlie.

I also wish all of you safe sailing and a happy new year in 2018!

全新义車順利付運並快將到港，隨即將會投入工作，為各會員服務。 關於雙繫泊泡，經過工程師跟進後已下水測試，希望盡快能得到海事處批核後並可投 入服務。 由上次 2016 年海事設施收費調整後，經過委員會各方面仔細探討及考慮，新海事設 施收費終於制定。是次調整希望能平衡過往兩年的通脹，為提升服務而更換的設施及 各項保養開支。 近日收到投訴，指部份會員將會員卡轉交與第三者使用，希望各會員顧自身及其他會 員權益，妥善保管會員卡，請勿將會員卡轉讓與其他人使用。如經發現，可能會影響 閣下會藉。 最近我們收到一位會員的答謝郵件，憶述他經歷遇到的緊急情況。當時天氣轉差，海 浪達二米高，氣溫 9 度，天文台並發出強烈季候風訊號，風速達 4 至 5 級。他致電 我們海事部同事，我們海事部經理 Mr. Charlie Lai 對這會員作出他工作範圍外的支 援，帶該位會員脫離險㙈。 在此我感謝該位會員對海事部 Claudio Ops 團隊作出的鼓勵和支持，及 Charlie 的 專業表現。 我並藉此機會祝願各會員有一個安全航海及愉快的 2018 年 ！

BAGPIPES AND BEERS HALCYON DAYS AT HHYC Words Clive Holgate

In the old days, you could swim off the end of the slipway where the Shell petrol pump used to be, it was that clean. There were just about 100 members when I joined HHYC in 1974. Although in 1997 I decided to move on, my affection for the Club means that I have always kept my membership active.

When it came to racing in the old days, we used to get terribly excited if we got 10 boats on the line ready to race. It was all a bit of a mish mash with boats of all sizes and types and we used to use something called the ‘Portsmouth Yardstick’ which was a handicapping system that allowed them to race one another.

It was, however, quite difficult to work out.

The first boat I kept at HHYC was Topeta, a 19 ft half cabincruiser with an original Johnson 65 hp outboard. It was so old that spare parts were almost impossible to get. To travel from HHYC to Whiskey Beach I had to have two batteries (fully charged) and two spare five-gallon petrol tanks or else I couldn’t get back again.

I traded up for an ex-working junk that was used for the High Island Reservoir Scheme. Its claim to fame was that it had on board a standard house refrigerator that held 64 cans of cold San Miguel. When I became enamored with racing, I swapped my 64-capacity San Miguel for my little sailing boat, which became the start boat for racing.

People that know me know that I speak with a bit of a stutter, and when it came to race officiating, I used to be the person that would judge when a boat crossed the line. I used to say to the race recorder...n...n...n...n...now! That always seemed to raise a laugh. I used tell the girls that it was the actual “now” and not the n...n...n...n... that was important.

The opposite of competitive racing was of course simply fun days out on the water. What happy memories. For example, after a family day out at Hap Mun Bay, coming back into Pak Sha Wan, with the sun going down, Tim Casey, who was a very good bagpipe player (although he came from London) used to stand at the bow of one of the boats and he would pipe us into the Haven. It would send a tear rolling down your cheek, it sounded so good.

It's no longer the case because of health and safety regulations, but for many years at Chinese New Year it was the tradition for members to run the bar and the various facilities. I remember that everyone wanted to drive the sampan and one particular chap, the first time he did it he managed to drop someone into the water, the second year he did the same thing again! We ribbed him about getting his ‘hat trick’; unfortunately, he failed to oblige the expectant members.

認識我的人知道我說話有少許口吃，當在比賽作裁判時，我 通常是評審船隻是否越線的，我會對著錄音機說...開…開… 開…始！這就經常引起哄堂大笑。我經常告訴那些少女們其 實應該是「開始」，而不是開…開…開…始，這是很重要 的。 比賽以外的日子當然是在水上找尋樂趣皂的日子。那有很多 快樂的回憶。例如，當在廈門灣完成了一個家庭日遊樂回到 白沙灣時，太陽正在下山的時候，著名風笛手 Tim Casey (雖然來自倫敦！) 通常會自其中一艘船的船頭在 Haven 為 我們演奏風笛。他的美妙演奏會使您落淚。 由於健康及安全法例問題，此情不再，但有多年的農曆新年 日，會員按傳統都會開放酒吧及其他設施。我記得人人都要駕 駛舢舨，而有一位很特別的青年，他首次玩這遊戲時他把一個 人擲到水裏，第二年時他也是做同樣的事！我們都嘲弄著要他 重施其技；不過他卻不能滿足那些其望看熱閙的會員。
