Tribute to Vincent G Christian (aka ‘Pinky’)

Vince was a much loved and multi-talented sportsman, and as an Editor of note, gave the Club his best. Whether it was for his love of life and for Catherine, or for his numerous friends through sailing, paragliding, scuba diving, parachuting or hockey, it made not a lot of difference as he gave us his all. He was also a knowledgeable and natural teacher who helped many. It did not matter what you were sailing—a big yacht, a small yacht, a fast offshore yacht or a classic as he would help out with grace and good humour. When sailing or on a committee, on a passage race or around the cans, at a rock or a reef in the South China Sea, offshore to Subic Bay or San Fernando, or in Phuket and beyond ... Vince brought his best game face to bear, a calmness and stability that will be sorely missed by us all.

Good bye Vince, you were one of a kind, a rarity and a good friend to us all.

向 Vincent G Christian 致敬 又名 ‘Pinky’ Vince 是一位備受愛戴、多才多藝的運動員，之 前也為遊艇會做了很長時間編輯的工作。他熱 愛生命、深愛 Catherine，通過帆船、滑翔傘、 潛水、跳傘和曲棍球活動，他廣交好友，待人至 誠。Vince 見多識廣，而且樂於助人，是天生的 好老師。無論你坐什麼帆船，大的、小的、離 岸快船、還是經典的帆船，他都會優雅地提供幫 忙，而且不忘開玩笑。無論他是進行競賽還是參 與仲裁、參加拉力賽還是隨意出海暢遊、身處南 中國海還是在 Subic Bay、或是 San Fernando、 在布吉還是更遠的地方…… Vince 都平靜安穩， 勇往直前。獨一無二的 Vince，大家的好朋友， 再見了！我們會非常想念你。

One of our long-standing members is Frank Pong who has donated two J80’s for sail training. Whilst these are available for use by members, they are also to be used by Mainland sailors from Southern China to learn to sail and then participate in the Club’s races. Recently Frank expressed his appreciation for our partnership in this venture by making a sizeable donation to both the building fund and to a new fund for staff development and team-building. I thank Frank for his initiatives and I look forward to the Club’s continuing support for these initiatives.

The Club recently held its annual Open Day and there is a more complete report in this issue of the Hebe Jebes. It was an extremely well-organised and patronised event. Around 2,000 non-members visited the Club to sample the water sports on offer. In addition, the Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Foundation took advantage of this open day to commence its initiative to develop a sailing programme for less advantaged children and young adults in Hong Kong. Days such as this highly successful open day are only possible because of the support of sponsors, volunteer members, and the good will and hard work of the Club’s staff for which I am most grateful.

Planning for the 24HR Charity Dinghy Race is well under way and the responsible committee is looking to make it bigger and better than ever with quite ambitious fund-raising targets. Apart from the many teams who gather to compete, the Club opens its doors to around 5,000 non-members who want to try out sailing, kayaking or simply go for a ride on Hebe One. This is a fantastic event and it will be held on 5 and 6 October this year. I invite you to keep this weekend clear by marking your calendar now.

The Hebe Haven Sailability Trust has been commended by the Royal Yachting Association as one of the top ten busiest Sailability centres world-wide. I am sure that the team at Sailability are justifiably proud. Incidentally, the Tenth Anniversary Celebration of Sailability in Hong Kong is on 23 November this year and is another date for your diary.

The programmes being run by the Planning and Works Committee are explained later by the Vice Commodore Paul Arkwright. This team is making excellent progress in a number of projects which require immediate attention and is also addressing the long-term issues which include the lease modification. Regrettably progress is not always evident to members. Projects require a lot of time for investigation, design and regulatory approvals such that the actual site works are the visible short-lived part of a project’s duration.

The Articles of Association are being updated in preparation for consultation with, and ultimately the approval of members at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM). You will recall that this is driven by changes in the Companies Ordinance and that it is well overdue. I am pleased to say that, as I write this report to you, the first draft from the Club’s lawyer is with me and has been reviewed by the relevant committee. The next step is to table the draft at a General Committee meeting for agreement to release the draft for comment to you, the members. There will be a member’s forum shortly to explain the changes and an EGM will be called and hopefully that will be in September this year. Any change in the Articles of Association requires approval by at least 75% of the votes at an EGM plus the express approval of the Department of Lands (to ensure that the Club’s objectives remain consistent with its private recreational lease).

We are now well into the term of this General Committee and, by the time that you read this, the Annual General Meeting will be imminent. It is critical that, regardless of your belief, each of you take the time to vote either in person or by proxy. The scheduled date is 16 October. This is an incredibly important event and I ask that you mark your diaries now, please.

Vince Christian passed away on 30 May 2019. This was a shock and very sad news to those who knew him. Vince has been a member for 23 years and is well respected for his love of sailing as well as other extreme sports and also for his desire to help others learn these sports. My condolences have been extended to Catherine and his family. Please read the obituary which appears inside the front cover of this issue.

我們的資深會員 Frank Pong 捐贈了兩隻J80給會所，以作帆船訓練之用。 除了我們的會員可以使用這兩隻船，來自南中國的內地帆船選手，也可以用 來學習帆船技巧，然後參加會所的賽事。最近 Frank 表示欣賞我們設立的夥 伴合作計劃，並捐出大筆善款，資助建造費用和新成立的員工發展及團隊建 立基金。非常感謝 Frank慷慨解囊，期待遊艇會繼續支持這些舉措。 遊艇會最近舉辦了開放日，這期 Hebe Jebes 另有詳盡介紹。活動籌辦得非 常成功，而且反應熱烈。當日吸引了約2000人來到會所，體驗各種水上運 動。新鴻基 Scallywag 基金，也在同一天推出幫助香港弱勢兒童和青少年的 帆船計劃。衷心感謝各個贊助單位、會員義工和會所員工，齊心協力，才得 以共創善舉。 我們已經展開24小時慈善小艇賽的規劃工作，負責的委員會希望今年的活 動比以往更加盛大、更加成功，今年的籌款目標更加進取。除了各隊競賽的 人馬，遊艇會到時會開放設施，讓大概5000名非會員體驗各種活動，如帆 船、獨木舟、或坐會船 Hebe One 暢遊海灣。這次活動定於10月5-6日舉 行，肯定非常精彩，請大家萬勿錯過。快點拿出記事本，記下這個重要的活 動吧！ 白沙灣Sailability信託，獲 Royal Yachting Association 譽為全世界 Sailability 中心當中，十大繁忙的中心之一。相信我們 Sailability 團隊肯定非常自豪。 今年11月23日正好是香港 Sailability 慶祝成立十週年的好日子，麻煩大家也 要記住這個重要日子。 規劃及工程委員會的項目，由副會長 Paul Arkwright 稍後解釋。委員在各項 需要盡快解決的項目上，取得良好進度。至於一些長遠的工作，例如租約修 訂，委員也正積極應對。可惜有些進度並不是肉眼可見的，探勘、設計和取 得規管當局審批，都需要時間。我們看得見的環節，如實際工地的工程，只 佔整個項目的一小部份。 我們已經開展了更新會所的組織章程，準備向會員進行諮詢工作，並將於特 別股東大會上通過。大家應該還記得，這項工作是為了回應公司條例的變 更，而且我們在時間方面已經落後於人。很高興向大家宣佈，我在撰寫這篇 文章時，遊艇會律師的第一份草稿，已經到了我手上，而且相關的委員會已 經看過了。下一步就是把草稿提交給執行委員會會議，請委員通過，然後發 布草稿讓大家提供意見。我們會儘快安排會員論壇，向大家解釋裡面的修 訂。之後我們希望在今年九月份召開特別股東大會。組織章程的任何修訂， 必須得到至少70%的會員，在特別股東大會上，以投票方式通過，另外要取 得地政總署明確表示贊成（以確保會所的宗旨，繼續與私人遊樂場地契約相 符）。 本屆的執行委員會，任期已過了部份，當大家看到這篇文章的時候，股東週 年大會也即將來臨。無論大家意向如何，務必抽空在10月16號，親自或者委 任代表在大會上投票。這個日子攸關重要，請大家馬上記下！

大家懷著震驚和悲傷的心情，和 Vince Christian 說再見。Vince 當遊艇 會會員，已有二十三年。早在2003年，他是這期刊的編輯，當時我們經 常緊密合作。他投入大量精神和時間，讓 Hebe Jebes 精益求精，而且在 我們製作五十週年特刊時，提供了寶貴的協助。Vince曾是賽事委員會的 成員，帆船經驗豐富，技巧高超，無論在岸上還是海上，他都是遊艇會的 重要成員。

我在撰寫這篇文章時，正好進入帆船活動的高峰期。除了有多場比賽，帆 船訓練中心也舉辦各種課程及活動。課程由6月17日開始，橫跨整個夏季 到8月23日結束。會所主辦各式各樣的活動，例如廣受歡迎的冒險水上運 動週，喜歡帆船、獨木舟、站立式搖櫓船和各種沙灘遊戲的朋友，萬勿錯 過。未來兩個月，我們也會主辦 Optimist Stage 1 和 2、HKSF 一級到 三級課程。

另外，我們也提供為期兩天的初級RYA 機動船二級培訓課程，當中包括 駕駛機動船的技巧和背景知識，也是國際資格證書（ICC）的基礎課程。 課程針對慢速近距離操控、墮水拯救、滑水速度駕駛介紹和船隻碰撞法 規。

上課日期是七月六日、十三日（星期日）；八月十日和十七日（星期六） ；九月十日（星期二）和十一日（星期三）；九月十七日（星期二）和 九月十八日（星期三）。預留位置，請聯絡帆船訓練中心的 Joyce Har sailadmin@hhyc.org.hk。

我們的互惠會所香港仔遊艇會，要求我們提醒會員，他們的停車附例有所 修訂。如果會員沒有使用任何需要付費的會所設施，當天使用停車場每天 費用為港幣 $1600。現時香港仔遊艇會提供給白沙灣遊艇會會員的泊車費 用是每次探訪港幣 $50。

It is with sadness and shock that we say farewell to Vince Christian, a member for 23 years. I worked very closely with Vince when he was the Editor of this magazine as far back as 2003, where he put many hours of time and effort into editing and producing Hebe Jebes over the years as well as assisting greatly with the 50th Anniversary book. Vince also served on Sailcom and as a popular proficient sailor, was a big part of the fabric of the Club both on and off the water.

At the time of writing we are heading into our peak sailing season both on the racing side and courses and activities offered by the Sail Training Centre. Courses start on 17 June and run straight through the summer season until 23 August. We have plenty on offer such as our very popular Adventure Water Sports week where there is something for everyone from sailing to kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and beach games. We are also offering Optimist Stage 1 and 2 and HKSF Level 1 – 3 courses throughout the next couple of months.

Please don’t forget our two-day entry level RYA Powerboat Level 2 Training Course which provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). The course focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations.

Scheduled dates are Sunday 6 and 13 July, Saturday 10 and 17 August, Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 September and Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 September. Please contact Joyce Har in the STC at sailadmin@hhyc.org. hk to book your spot.

As our reciprocal club, The Aberdeen Boat Club have asked that we advise our members of their change in by-laws regarding car parking. A parking charge of HK$1,600 per day shall be incurred if members use the car park without using any paid Club facilities during the day of parking.

The current parking charge of Aberdeen Boat Club to members of HHYC is HK$50 per visit.

The weather did little to dampen enthusiasm at the Hebe Haven Yacht Club Sailing Centre Open Day 2019 as more than 2,000 visitors queued up to experience boating in its many forms—sailing in dinghies and keelboats, paddling on boards and kayaks, or just going for a ride in the Club’s service boat. Something for everyone... even having your face painted.

Held on Saturday, 4 May 2019, the event attracted 20 exhibitors inside the Garden Bar and 21 car boot vendors nearby displaying anything from musical instruments and footballs to car accessories and Barbie dolls. You could even have your picture taken with a parrot or have a crochet bath mat made from recycled T-shirts.

Environmental friendliness was the underlying theme with vendors like Zero Impact displaying cleaning products made from fruit and vegetable extracts. Federico Galimberti explained that his company supplies Hebe Haven Yacht Club and has an online shop. The Open Day provided an opportunity for direct promotion and a chance to meet members, and the public.

There were Torqeedo electric outboard engines on display and the Marine Police set up a mini shooting range for aspiring marksmen. Chris Tilbe of Makara Surf Company Limited showed his waxes and home-made products including a custom surf board and, alongside him, you could arrange a free ride on a Molokai paddle board. Culture Cove had 10 of its brands on display—these included sunglasses, trinkets and a very colourful rug designed by Tasha Cotton.

HHYC SAILING CENTRE OPEN DAY 2019

Well-known DJ and sailor, Kevin Lewis, provided lively music throughout the day, complemented by two talented young singers, one of whom played a keyboard. The lucky draw, hosted by the Club’s Sailing Manager, Rob Allen, proved popular while fish balls, fried rice and hot dogs were being consumed at a furious rate by the hungry visitors!

And what a great day for the Club’s Sailing Centre.

HK$140,000 was collected from 40 adults and children who signed up for the eight courses on offer. The centre takes on all ages, from six to 60 and beyond.

Junior sailors, training mostly in Optimists and Lasers, are selected by the Club’s coaches to join the ranks of the Hebe Dragons.

Down on the dock and lining the slipway were queues of visitors waiting for an opportunity to sail a dinghy, paddle, kayak or try out a paddle board. Some 250 guests went for a ride on Hebe One—a great opportunity for young families to be together afloat.

The Open Day also saw the launch of the Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Foundation, an initiative that will provide under-represented youth a path to sailing certification and mentorship for personal development. Sun Hung Kai’s Robert Quinlivan and Rowan Logan were on hand to introduce the scheme which enjoys the partnership of Hebe Haven Yacht Club and the charity, Sailability.

Rob Allen ended the day with a debriefing and offered thanks to the team of staff and volunteers who, despite the weather, made Open Day 2019 one to remember.

會所的帆船中心過了非常美好的一天，中心提供的八 個課程，共有40人登記參加，中心共收到港幣十四 萬元學費。從六歲到六十歲的參加者，中心都無任歡 迎。會所的教練從Optimists和Lasers團隊當中，挑選 出年輕的選手，加入Hebe Dragons。 在碼頭滑道旁邊，一眾到訪人士大排長龍，等待體 驗小艇、獨木舟、和衝浪板。約250位賓客乘坐會船 Hebe One出海暢遊，這個活動最適合一家人參與。開 放日當天，大家見證了新鴻基Scallywag基金的成立， 這個基金會為弱勢青少年開闢渠道，獲取帆船證書， 並接受導師指引，推動個人發展。新鴻基的Rovert Quinlivan和Rowan Logan一起介紹這個和白沙灣遊艇 會、Sailability慈善項目合作的計畫。

OPEN DAY REPORT

Although the weather was not great, we still had about 2,000 people turn up to enjoy the fantastic club community and spirit that we showed in the rain spells we had from the weather gods.

The STC organised FREE Sailing and watersports and boat trips on Hebe One. A huge shout out to our Youth Race Team, The Hebe Dragons who were on standby to assist the sailing staff with joyrides on our fleets of RS QUEST and Laser Pico dinghies.

Sailability Hong Kong were in full force getting people onto their fleet of dinghies for sailing joyrides.

Thanks to all the sponsors who donated prizes to the three lucky draws held during the day.

Thanks again to everyone who took part and made the day a great success.

We held a Bai Sun to launch the new partnership and sailing scheme with the Sun Hung Kai and SCALLYWAG Foundation, that will allow hundreds of local students to have the opportunity to access our sport via sponsorship and scholarship sailing programmes, as well as launching the new fleet of safety boats that the Club has recently purchased.

Another special mention to Herman Ng for the brilliant photos he has provided the Club once again.

On Saturday 4 May, HHYC hosted our annual Sailing Centre Open Day. What a brilliant day we had! We could not have run the event without the full support of the Membership, Club Staff, Volunteers, Parents, Committee Members, Sailability Hong Kong, the STC Sailing Team, our new partners from Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag Foundation, Sponsors and everyone who attended our event.

There was a Car Boot Sale, mini market, lucky draws, face painting and many other attractions at the Club to keep everyone entertained on and off the water during the mixed weather and rain we had on the day.

A special mention to Sai Kung Marine Police who brought along their police launch boat and team, to take part in the event. Everyone enjoyed meeting the police and getting onto the police boat. The families and their kids especially had fun trying on all the police safety equipment and gear!

HEBE DRAGONS ADVENTURES IN SINGAPORE & THAILAND

Thursday 18 April, the Hebe Dragons (Optimist team) and parents left for their training week in Pattaya at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club which lasted six days.

Each day started with fitness training in the pool or on/next to the beach with push-ups, planking, squats and running, followed by a good breakfast at the Club overlooking the beach. After rigging their boats and checking their sails, there was some time to cool down, and drink water whilst attending the briefing for that day.

The Dragons had to pull their boats down a slope onto the beach each day taking the short cut between the parasols and palm trees which required some strategic manoeuvring and shouting from helpful parents trying to ensure the sails did not hit anything.

Parents were also there to help as trying to hold your Optimist with at least six Dragons and stop it from bouncing up and down in the surf proved to be quite challenging, not mentioning the fact they then had to try to get the rudder on. Antonio performed a perfect Optimist capsize in the surf whilst demonstrating how not to launch your boat, after which the Dragons, both green and mainfleet sailed out perfectly through the surf. There was some great team work shown where the main fleet assisted the green fleet to get on the water.

Each day, the hungry sailors returned for a good lunch (fried rice, pasta bolo, fried chicken and milkshakes were the main ingredients) and went for a quick dip in the Varuna pool.

At the end of the sailing day, after all the boats and sails were cleaned and stored, they all jumped in the pool again until they were pulled out for dinner.

Besides pool fun, there was also time for something else—a seafood dinner somewhere on the waterfront in Pattaya. We rented two tuktuks to take us on a 20 – 30 minute ride, ate, enjoyed the sunset and had a look into the fried insect snack cart of a local seller. None of the sailors wanted to bring back some insect snacks for next day though...

The Dragons learned a lot during those days about sailing in the current, practising starting with current in good wind and in light wind, sailing in different conditions and really paying attention to their sail settings. Courses were set with 30 – 40 minutes upwind sailing, short courses with upwind tacks and downwind gybes, 20 minutes of rolling starts, boat handling, mark roundings, boat speeds and the rules of the road.

They became a bit naughty on the final day and instead of practising their starts, they tried to steal each other’s rudders, spirit-poles and daggerboards. Coach Antonio had to have a serious talk with the team. Our new green fleet showed some real courage in the brisk conditions.

Nai Nai, former Optimist world champion 2010, spent 1.5 days with the team—finetuning the team... they all managed to earn ice creams at the end of the day as their sail rigging had seriously improved. She explained a lot about current, wind conditions, wind directions and when to use shallow water. The Dragons really enjoyed working with her again and the good news was she also joined them in Singapore to coach them during the race together with Antonio.

Hebe D ra go ns 到星加坡和泰國訓練 四月十八日星期四，Hebe Dragons （Optimist團隊） 和各位家長，出發到芭堤雅的Royal Varuna遊艇會接 受為期六日的訓練。 每天以體能訓練為起點，各隊員在泳池或沙灘做掌上 壓、平板支撐、蹲坐和跑步練習，然後到會所享用早 餐，欣賞海灘美景。整理好船上裝備和檢查過帆之 後，大家有時間放鬆一下，一邊喝水、一邊聆聽當日 簡報。

Five of our Dragons (Peter, Seb, Faber, Alisha and Vianney) went to Singapore to compete in the SAF Regatta on Singapore’s East Coast. They enjoyed a day of rest in Singapore and competed on Saturday and Sunday in between the cargo ships and the 777s and A380s taking off and landing every two minutes. This turned out to be the highlight of the Saturday race with most sailors being able to share a lot of information about all the planes they saw during the day, but not having a lot of information about the current, the wind and the course. Results at the end of day one were not brilliant.

The team also had a bit of a rushed start to the race, as the sailing centre could not find our rented boats and the Dragons only got their boats a few minutes before start. Hence there was no time for briefing on the water nor a test of the current and wind. The race course was very challenging due to strong current and light winds which means the sailors had to think strategically. The sailing standards in Singapore are also very high.

Coach Antonio and Nai Nai did a detailed debrief that evening instead of going to the pool and the team was in much better shape the next day and we saw some strong sailing.

每天各位隊員都要沿著捷徑把船拖到坡下，中間要避 開很多太陽傘和棕櫚樹，各位擔心船帆撞上物件的家 長，喊聲此長彼落。海上波濤洶湧，各位家長在船隻 顛簸之際，奮力掌控，裝好船陀，實在也花了不少力 氣。Antonio展示如何不下水時，發生了了一次完美的 翻船。其後Green Fleet和主隊在海浪中完美地出航。 主隊協助Green Fleet下水時，充份展現出團隊精神。 每天，飢腸轆轆的隊員回到會所吃豐富的午餐，主菜 包括炒飯、意粉、炸雞和奶昔，飯後到Varuna泳池 暢泳。每天完成帆船訓練、所有船和帆清潔和存儲完 畢，所有隊員再次跳進泳池嬉水，直到晚餐時份被拉 上水面為止。 除了泳池之樂，大家還可以到芭堤雅岸邊享用海鮮晚 餐。我們租了兩部tuktuk車，20到30分鐘車程，就 到達目的地。我們共享美食、黃昏日落美景，還到訪 了售賣香炸昆蟲的攤檔。不過沒人帶回任何昆蟲小吃 呢…… 這次訓練，讓幾位Dragons學會了很多在海浪中出航 的知識：如何在順風和柔風時啟航、在不同的狀況中 航行、認真留意船帆設置。訓練課程包括逆風航行30 到40分鐘、逆風轉向和順豐改變航道的簡短課程、20 分鐘輪流啟航、帆船操作、繞航紀錄、帆船速度和航 行規則。訓練最後一天隊員使壞，沒有練習啟航，反 而互偷船舵、主桿和擋水板，教練Antonio跟隊員進行 一輪認真對話。我們的Green Fleet在充滿挑戰性的情 況中，表現出真正的勇氣。

2010年前Optimist世界冠軍Nai Nai花了一天半的時 間，幫助隊員修正技巧，大家的船帆整理能力大大提 升，所以都得到冰淇淋作獎勵。Nai Nai針對水流、 風勢、風向和何時利用淺水等等做出詳細解釋。隊員 再次和她合作，感到非常雀躍。Nai Nai稍後也跟隨 隊伍和Antonio教練，一齊到星加坡，在賽事期間知 道隊員。 我們五名Dragons（Peter, Sen, Fabre, Alicia和 Vianney）到達新加坡東岸參加SAF帆船賽。到步之 後先休息一天，然後星期六和星期日開始競賽，比賽 場地四周都是貨船，還有每兩分鐘不斷升降的777和 A380飛機。飛機結果成為了星期六賽事的亮點，各 位隊員分享了日間看到的飛機的資料，反而沒有討論 太多關於水流、風勢和航道的東西。第一天賽果強差 人意，一開始的時候，比賽中心找不到我們租用的船 隻，結果比賽開始前幾分鐘，各位Dragons才拿到船 隻，導致沒有時間就水流和風勢進行簡報或測試。賽 道水流洶湧、風速過弱，充滿挑戰，隊員需要謹慎思 考戰略。星加坡的帆船賽事標準也非常高。 當晚Antonio教練和Nai Nai進行了詳細的賽後報告。 大家沒有到泳池玩樂，第二天狀態更佳，在比賽中表 現更好。

HHYC J80 KEELBOAT LAUNCH CEREMONY & BAI SUN

by Sharkey Xia A launch ceremony was held on 30 March 2019 for launching our two new J80s 'Baring Asia 1 (HKG 1266)' and 'Baring Asia 2 (HKG 1299)' donated by Baring Private Equity Asia.

A traditional Bai Sun ceremony was conducted on the day for making blessings, followed by the speeches given by Mr Jean Salata, the Chief Executive and Founding Partner of Baring Private Equity Asia, Mr Simon Jones, HHYC Rear Commodore of Sailing as well as Ms Bridget Chan, the Chairman of our 24HR Charity Dinghy Race Committee.

One of the main aims of the donation will be to introduce more mainland sailors to the Club and Hong Kong events, as well as be used for many other events and training at the Sailing Centre.

HHYC now has 4 x J80s available for qualified members to hire from the Club. Contact the Sailing Centre for more information about the charter details and availability, as well as how to become qualified and added to our Helms List for these boats.

第一次季節系列賽成功舉辦之後，白沙灣遊艇會和香港遊 艇會的Big Boat Committee ，再一次聯手為大家帶來20182019季節系列賽。

當日大家拜神祈福，然後Baring Private Equity Asia 的行 政總裁Jean Salata先生、白沙灣遊艇會助理會長（賽事） Simon Jones和24小時慈善小艇賽委員會主席Bridget Chan 先後致辭。

季節系列賽包括2018冬季系列賽、2019春季系列賽、和 2019春節系列盃。這些在牛尾海一帶進行的活動，除了每次 個別項目有獎項頒授，也有額外增設的獎項。 第一次季節系列賽成功舉辦之後，白沙灣遊艇會和香港遊 艇會的Big Boat Committee ，再一次聯手為大家帶來20182019季節系列賽。

善款其中一個用途，是讓更多內地選手認識我們的遊艇會， 並參與香港賽事。另外，我們也會利用善款，在帆船中心舉 辦訓練和其他活動。 現在我們有四艘J80可供會員租用！希望大家踴躍來帆船中 心租用船隻，揚帆出海暢遊！

So what of the final race day of the Spring Series on Saturday, 27 April 2019?

The weather forecast was consistently showing a 14 – 20 knots for four to five days prior—with the chance of rain reasonably high. The wet stuff was more for the morning than afternoon. Suffice it to say that it was grey when the nine Ichiban crew members gathered on the balcony at HHYC—it was good to have a returning Berenice back for her first race of the Series.

As Ichiban left the mooring at around 1.15 pm, we were surprised to see that our main competitor for the Series, No One Else, still had her cover in place and showed no sign of rising from her slumber. With a reputation for frequently being just in time for the start there was still time, but... surely they would be on the water to battle for a trophy that they would have a high expectation to win.

Seemingly not at this point.

OK, if No One Else was not going to make an appearance, it was now definitely Ichiban’s series to lose! All we had to do was get round the course—twice—and finish in the first three or four and bingo! Simple really; hmmm! On the first race, with the heavy conditions on offer, we expected Scrumpy to compete, on handicap, and that also Amaze may be difficult to match. The conditions were likely to be too much for Bits and Pieces.

At 1.50 pm, the ARO, Eric did his usual introductions and provided the course information: 'Course 11 for IRC and Course 13 for HKPN and J80'. I was on the helm for the first race and called for someone (anyone!) to reveal Course 13.

Somehow, despite repeated requests and maybe due to a diversion—such as putting in a reef— Course 13 was not revealed, so we headed for the start— unwittingly—not knowing the course. All we knew for sure was that we needed to remember to pass through the start finish line on the windward legs!

The race results (p. 34) show the wind was recorded at 18 knots at the start—it was at least that—so we were happy with our decision to reef and not unfurl the entire genoa. Perhaps as a consequence of the reduced sails, I was about 20 seconds late for the line, though at the Committee boat end this was not too much of a loss. In the strong wind, the jostling for position at the start was minimal, so the fleet got away clear.

With a couple of J80’s ahead disrupting our clear path, on board Ichiban I called for an early tack; Amaze, Windseeker and Scrumpy to our stern had already done the same. On this leg, we strangely hit a wind hole, in which I called for the genoa to be fully unfurled; where it remained for the rest of the race, without too much detriment.

Conditions start to deteriorate at the start of Race 8 Temujin was close at the top mark and Amaze also not too far ahead; LoTech was going very well ahead of all these boats and possibly in the lead; as we couldn’t see Bits and Pieces at all (more on her fate later). Rounding the top mark we hoisted the spinnaker and headed for the C-Mark, looking to close down on those boats flying asymetrics and sailing a wider course. By the bottom mark, we were close quarters with LoTech, but as we approached something strange was occurring! On board Ichiban I kept asking for information on where the mark was, as it had disappeared! Quickly we realised that one of the IRC boats had hooked onto it and was dragging it eastwards! With no other option, I set up to sail around both the buoy and Blu (the snared party), whilst the crew set about dropping the spinnaker.

Unfortunately, there were one or two issues with the drop—including a knot in the halyard which took time to resolve and this meant that we couldn’t harden

up as quickly as I wanted. When all was sorted, we tacked over into starboard to pass through the gate.

Fortunately we remembered this detail, despite the spinnaker troubles!

On the second circuit, we kept our eye on Temujin and Amaze—both giving Ichiban time—and were happy that we had them on handicap, at that point. Only LoTech ahead was out of reach; not forgetting Scrumpy and perhaps Windseeker to our stern, with favourable handicaps. It was part way up the third leg that we heard on the radio that the “race is abandoned” and that “boats should return to the starting area”. Was this to do with Blu hooking the C-Mark? Fortunately, on board Ichiban we didn’t react to this and continued to race, as it was only the IRC race that was abandoned.

At the prize-giving, it was revealed later that Lighthorse Alpha+ had also hooked the A1 Mark! Has there ever been a race when two marks are snared by two boats?

Moving on to the second rounding of the C-Mark (I really don’t recall what went on in between) and the dash to the finishing line, or so we expected (remember we didn’t know the course!)—Ichiban had a close port starboard skirmish with J80 Jazz on the finish line. To our surprise, no hooter was sounded and other boats ahead continued to race, so we gathered ourselves for another circuit. This was very strange to me, as we had talked at Sail Comm about making sure that the first race of a day was ‘short’ and it was now about 55 minutes into the race. Anyway, we continued on with Temujin as our main target in this race and, likely, in the Series, with No One Else a no-show.

The third leg was just about survival, as the foredeck crew were drained, so we opted not to hoist the spinnaker for the third downward leg. This went OK and we didn’t lose much distance on Temujin, mainly as they also stayed on white sails for much of the leg, before hoisting. As we goose-winged into the final rounding of the C-mark, Temujin seemed to be within the three-minute handicap separation and Amaze was to our stern, so all looked OK in terms of the Series overall scoring.

As the race result shows, LoTech smashed the fleet and took line honours and first place on corrected time. Scrumpy used her high handicap to good effect to take first place, as we expected. So Ichiban in third? Unfortunately not! After handing over to Andrew to steer whilst awaiting the start of the final race, it occurred to me that I should check Course 13!

Oh dear (something stronger was actually said) we had missed the B-mark (a gybing mark) on the first circuit! This was doubly embarrassingly, as we had seen a buoy ahead soon after the start, but dismissed it (and gave it no further thought) as a mark for the dinghies that were sailing in the same location! Aieeeyahhh, we would need to retire, discard Race 7 and focus on winning the final race!

Oh, and before I forget, I need to mention Bits and Pieces. She had completely retired from the day and returned to her mooring for early rum and coke with a leg injury to owner, Kay, who had nearly went overboard before the first start!

With Race 7 discarded, it was time on board Ichiban to re-group. I quickly worked out that we were probably still OK for the overall Series, even if Race 8 was not concluded for some reason, such as the deteriorating weather! Only thanks to No One Else for not turning up!

Robert, on the helm for the final race, absolutely nailed the start.

This time we knew that we had to complete the conventional two sausages and still go through the gate on the upwind leg of the second circuit. Due to J80 interference, again, soon after the start we tacked early on the first leg, with Amaze to leeward and Temujin to windward. If I recall correctly, LoTech was ahead again at the first mark and Temujin in close quarters.

Up to now the wind was still full and there was discussion about not hoisting the spinnaker due to a potential squall; but as we needed to win this race, that was notion was quickly dismissed. Halfway down the first windward leg, the thunder and lightning started and the rain shortly thereafter. As gallows humour abounded on board Ichiban, we continued to race; half hoping that this race would also be abandoned.

Fortunately not, as we managed to get ourselves into a comfortable lead on the water as we rounded the top mark for the second time and final time. The rest of the journey was a matter of survival of the conditions, which included a very light wind that came with the rain. The published race result shows a very FIRST line honours (after almost 150 races) for Ichiban and a comfortable margin on the water and on corrected time to LoTech, who with Temjuin and Windseeker were the only boats to not retire.

The prize-giving was entertaining; with Rob Allen giving much-deserved abuse to Blu and Lighthorse for their ‘fishing expeditions’ and to Ichiban and me, in particular, for missing the B-Mark on Race 7. Whilst the

生力啤系列賽 — 第七、八場比賽 乘坐Ichiban出賽 2019年4月27日星期六的春季系列賽，最後一天比 賽日，到底賽果如何？之前4-5天的天氣預測，風速 持續為14-20海里，下雨機會大。下雨主要集中在上 午，九位船員聚集在白沙灣遊艇會陽台上時，天還是 灰灰的。我們很高興，看到Berenice回來參與系列賽 中第一場比賽。 Ichiban在下午1點15分離開停泊處，當時我們看到系列 賽中最強的對手No One Else還沈睡在蓋子下面，感 到非常驚訝。他們向來趕在比賽開始前整裝出發，當 時還有一點時間，可是……他們勝出這場比賽的機會 很高，為何船還沒有下水，去競逐獎盃呢？ 既然No One Else不打算出賽，Ichiban馬上成為了系 列賽的頂頭大熱！我們只需要圍繞賽道航行兩次，以 頭三到四名完成賽事，就可以拿下獎盃了！聽起來真 的很簡單哦！第一輪比賽在嚴峻情況中開展，我們預 期Scrumpy會在讓分情況下競逐，而Amaze的表現應 該突出，但是對Bits and Pieces來說，可能情況就有 點棘手。 outcome of the Race 7 and the non-appearance of No One Else did put a slight damper on celebrations; the Ichiban Crew were pleased to take the plaudits as winner of the San Miguel Monsoon Summer Series 2019. This was Ichiban’s first Series win since the Summer Series of 2017, so a lot of happy people and Race 7 forgotten about.

In the overall Monsoon Series, congratulations to winner, Temujin who edged out last year’s winner Ichiban by 76 points and LoTech in third. A very worthy winner for consistent performance over 17 races from November 18 to April 19.

到了下午一點五十分，Eric （ARO）如常介紹航道資 訊：「IRC請用十一號航道，HKPN和J80請使用十三 號航道。」第一輪比賽由我掌舵，我要求揭示十三號 航道，但是可能因為需要轉向，沒人揭示航道，我們 於是在不清楚航線的情況下駛往啟航點。我們唯一知 道的，就是要在迎風的賽程中越過啟航線和完航線！ 賽果顯示，啟航時風速為18海里（或以上），我們決 定收帆是正確的選擇，而不是揚帆而出。可能因為船 帆收起了一部份，到達啟航線時我遲了20秒。不過針 對啟航船船尾這個位置而言，損失不是很大。由於風 勢強勁，大家都沒有大力在啟航點爭奪領先位置，船 隊順利而有秩序地啟航。我們前面有兩隻J80阻礙了

Simon Jones 清晰的航道，於是我提早讓Ichiban改變航向。我們後 面的Amaze、Windseeker和Scrumpy已經做了同一個 動作。我們在此賽程中，奇怪地遇上了風洞，我提出 把船帆全部展開，直到賽事完成，而中間沒有造成太 大的不良影響。 我們完全沒看到Bits and Pieces，我們前面是 Temujin，而Amaze在他們前面不遠處，LoTech則大 概在領先的位置。駛過了頂標，我們揚起了大三角 帆，往C標駛去，希望趕上其他船隻。差不多到達底 標時，我們縮短了跟LoTech的距離。此時卻發生了 很奇怪的事情！ 我操控著Ichiban的同時，不斷詢問標記的位置，因 為它突然消失了！我們迅即發現，原來其中一艘IRC 船勾上了標記，正拖著標記往東走！既然沒有別的選 擇，我只好向著航標駛去，希望繞過浮標和勾上了標 記的Blu，而船員則準備把大三角帆收起。收帆時， 我們卻不幸遇到了困難。升降索打了一個結，需要船 員花時間去解決，於是船的速度也被拖慢。解決問題 後，我們往右舷改向，通過「閘口」。還好我們在處 理大三角帆的過程中，沒有忘記這個細節！ 來到比賽第二圈，我們緊盯著Temujin和Amaze， 當時兩艘船都需要讓分，提供了額外的時間給 Ichiban。走在最前的Lotech不見蹤影，而Scrumpy和 Windseeker在我們船尾，讓分的情況對我們有利。 來到第三個航段，我們從無線電聽到「比賽取消」， 和「所有船隻要回到啟航區」。這是因為Blu勾到了 C標嗎？幸好，我們沒有回應要求，繼續完成比賽。 原來取消的只是IRC的環節。稍後在頒獎典禮上，我 們才知道原來Lighthorse Alpha+也勾到了A1標記！ 你們有遇到過任何比賽，有兩條船分別勾走了兩個標 記的嗎？

第二次繞過C標記的時候（我已經記不起中間發生什 麼事情了），我們相信快要到達完航線了（記得我們 根本沒搞清楚航道嗎？），Ichiban的左舷和J80 Jazz 發生了小碰撞。很意外，現場並沒有想起汽笛聲，其 他在我們前頭的船隻繼續爭先，我們也抖擻精神，為 繞第二圈做好準備。由於我們在賽事委員會討論過， 需要確保每天的第一場賽事應該「盡量簡短」，而當 時賽事已經進行了55分鐘，我們感到有點莫名其妙。 我們繼續比賽，以Temujin為我們主要的對手，而 No One Else 則不見蹤影。 第三個賽段主要目標是繼續航行，因為前甲板的船員 已經筋疲力盡。在這個賽段，我們選擇不舉起大三角 帆。這個安排沒讓我們落後於Temujin太多的距離，主 要因為他們也在此航段中，大部份時間只依靠白帆航 行。我們往C標記轉去的時候，Temujin和我們的距離 約三分鐘，而Amaze則在我們船尾。我們在這個系列 整體分數應該不錯。 賽果顯示，LoTech打敗了對手，時間經修正之後，勇 奪第一位。Scrumpy一如所料，發揮了讓分的安排， 取得讓分賽第一名。那麼Ichiban是季軍嗎？可惜不 是！在等待最後一場賽事時，我讓Andrew掌舵，然 後想起應該查清楚十三號航線！天呀～ 我們在第一圈 錯過了B標記！真是非常尷尬，因為我們啟航不久， 就看到了一個浮標，我們卻馬上認為，那個標誌是給 附近航行的小艇看的！哎呀！我們只好放棄第七場賽 事，集中精神，希望贏得最後一輪！ 當日原來Bits and Pieces完全退出了比賽。船東Kay 在啟航前幾乎掉進水裡，弄傷了腿。結果船隻一早返 回停泊處，船員大喝可樂蘭姆酒。 由於我們放棄了第七場賽事，船員需要重整旗鼓。我 很快計算出，即便第八場賽事因為某些原因（例如惡

劣天氣）不能進行，我們整體的成績也應該不過不 失。因為No One Else沒有出現哦！ 最後一場賽事，由Robert掌舵，啟航非常順利。這 次我們知道要完成傳統的兩條香腸形狀航線，之後 第二圈時依然要穿過逆風航段的閘口。又一次因為 J80的干擾，我們一開始不久，就在第一航段頂風轉 向，Amaze在我們下風，Temujin在上風。如果我沒 有記錯，LoTech再一次到達第一個標記，Temujin緊 隨其後。風勢一直很強，大家本來認為不要張起大三 角帆，因為害怕突然出現暴風，但是因為我們必須勝 出這場比賽，最後否決了這個建議。 第一個上風賽段過了一半，就開始行雷閃電，繼而下 雨。船上眾人開始發揮黑色幽默，我們一邊繼續比 賽，一邊希望這場比賽也會被取消。還好最終比賽 繼續，我們第二次和最後一次繞過頂標的時候，都 在領先的排名。比賽其餘的環節，就是克服惡劣的 環境，因為當時下雨而且風勢很弱。按照公布的賽 果，Ichiban首名完成賽事，讓分賽則LoTech勝出。 沒有棄權的包括Temujin和Windseeker。 頒獎典禮娛樂性十足，Rob Allen大力奚落Blu和 Lighthorse「出海打魚」、然後嘲弄Ichiban和我在 第七場比賽錯過了B標記。雖然我們放棄了第七場 比賽，而且No One Else沒有出現，讓慶祝的氣氛有 一點點低落，但是Ichiban全體船員知道我們勝出了 2019年生力啤春季系列賽，都感到非常雀躍。自從 2017年夏季系列賽開始，這是Ichiban首度勝出，大 家很快就把第七場比賽拋諸腦後，大力慶祝。

The Sustainability committee are working to make HHYC as plastic free and environmentally friendly as possible.

This year we hope to get rid of plastic ice bags (RHKYC implemented this two years ago). We are sourcing reusable ice bags that will be on sale at the Club, or you can bring your own bag.

今年我們希望淘汰冰袋（香港遊艇會早在兩年前已經推 行這個作法）。我們正在採購可再用冰袋，在會所出 售。大家當然也可以自攜冰袋。

Every summer ice bags can be found littering our beaches and floating in the water, endangering sea life. It can take up to 20 years for a plastic bag to decompose in the ocean.

Many sea creatures are dying by mistaking them for food.

每年我們的海灘都佈滿被遺棄的冰袋，也有大量冰袋在 海水中載浮載沉，危害海洋生態。塑料袋在海洋裡，需 要長達20年才可以分解。很多海中生物因為誤以為塑膠 袋是食物，吃了之後死亡。

Bucket Challenge Starting from 1 July, we are having a Bucket Challenge—collect a bucket from the Garden Bar Area and take it with you when you go out on the water. Fill it with trash, send us a photo of you collecting the trash from the beach (or the sea) and claim a free drink voucher (soft drink, or can of beer for older members)—and of course bring the bucket and trash back to shore. Photos will be displayed on the sustainability notice board.

Boatyard clean up—Hopefully by now all items will have been claimed from the boatyard. Please help us to keep our yacht club clean, instead of storing items under boats or on the sea wall.

TRI-CLUB SNOOKER TOURNAMENT 2019

The Hebe Haven Yacht Club Snooker Team 2019 brings good news to the Club! Members CK Chan, Gareth Williams, Steve So and Stuart Mason have successfully defended the Championship against the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the Aberdeen Boat Club on Monday, 6 May 2019 at the Hong Kong Club in Central.

With two consecutive victories since 2018, the Club will be able to keep the trophy for the whole year. I would like to thank Don for the approval to engrave our glorious record onto the plaque. We are so thrilled with this victory and hope there are many more to come!

Vince was a much loved and multi-talented sportsman, and as an Editor of note, gave the Club his best. Whether it was for his love of life and for Catherine, or for his numerous friends through sailing, paragliding, scuba diving, parachuting or hockey, it made not a lot of difference as he gave us his all. He was also a knowledgeable and natural teacher who helped many. It did not matter what you were sailing—a big yacht, a small yacht, a fast offshore yacht or a classic as he would help out with grace and good humour. When sailing or on a committee, on a passage race or around the cans, at a rock or a reef in the South China Sea, offshore to Subic Bay or San Fernando, or in Phuket and beyond ... Vince brought his best game face to bear, a calmness and stability that will be sorely missed by us all.

Good bye Vince, you were one of a kind, a rarity and a good friend to us all.

For those of you who may not have had the pleasure of joining this event before, this is why it is so important you get involved:

This flagship club event has been going since 2002, raising over 10 million dollars for our partner charities through working with key sponsors, local businesses, charities, members, sailors and schools.

Sailors of all ages and skill levels race in teams of all sizes to complete the most laps in 24 hours around a 1.2 km course in Shelter Cove, Sai Kung—sailing through the night and partying as they go throughout the weekend.

The onshore race village and carnival atmosphere with live entertainment, competitions and other attractions means a large number of visitors come to try out watersports, enjoy the atmosphere and share our wonderful Club.

More than 7,500 participants/volunteers/supporters and general public were involved in 2018 so it’s a true community event of which we are justifiably proud.

Stage 1: Ground Investigation (GI) works to find out exactly type of ground we are dealing with under the Club Stage 2: Designing the repair works (based on stage 1 GI works) Stage 3: Re-constructing the seawall (based on stage 2 design works)

The GI contractor, Fong On, is busy drilling boreholes around the Club to help ascertain the exact nature of what’s down there. The results will then be used in the design and repair of the seawall. I thank you for your patience, while the drill rigs temporarily occupy bits of the car park and/or boatyard space. All GI works are scheduled for completion by mid-June.

Marina Pile Extension Project AECOM has finished stage 1 of its report which is to assess anticipated sea levels.

The stage 1 report will go to GenCom for agreement on design sea levels. This will be the basis for designing the extension to the marina piles which, after experience with Typhoon Mangkhut is clearly needed. We are still confirming the existing approval status of the existing marina designs to then determine the best way forward with re-design or replacement of the piles. As with any process involving government departments this is not a quick process. As typhoon season is approaching, to further enhance the security of the marina pontoons in the interim, we plan to install ‘stoppers’ at the top of the marina piles to prevent the pontoons from overtopping the piles, while—in extreme cases—allowing boats to float up, still attached to their pontoon moorings. This system has been successfully utilised at marinas in the US Great Lakes.

General Utility Survey John Barrett from Viewbond will soon carry out a non-destructive general utility survey across the Club to help us map out all the underground utilities—so when major works commence, we reduce the risk of contractors hitting water mains, electric cables, etc. while they are excavating/building.

Enhancing Fire Safety Arup has been appointed as the Fire Services Engineer for this project—conducting work in two stages: • •

Stage 1—an assessment of fire safety of the Clubhouse to identify any areas which may need attention in terms of compliance.

Stage 2—implementation of works to address recommendations issued in stage 1. Provide support to the Authorised Person (AP) and contractor(s) together with liaison with BD and FSD and/or other relevant authorities to obtain approval and sign off.

Seawall Repair Project Work on this project has already started and comprises three key stages:

This fire safety work is also required before we can proceed with obtaining approval for the lift to provide better disabled access to the club facilities.

Boat Rack Safety Walkway To enhance safety for our staff working on the boat racks, and ensure that they can safely tie down boats pre-typhoon, Matthew will oversee the trial of a safe walkway for staff working at height on the boat racks. If successful, the system will then be added to the entire boat rack.

Lightning Protection Following serious disruption last year due to a lightning strike, the Club’s lightning protection has been reviewed by Management. Major upgrades have been agreed by the General Committee and this will enhance protection of all the Club’s assets.

By the time that you read this work will have commenced and is expected to be completed by early August.

Rear Commodore—Sailing

The highlight of the day was the launch of an exciting new sailing initiative introduced by the Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Foundation, in partnership with Sailability and the HHYC Sailing Training Centre (STC). This initiative will give the opportunity to many children and youths who would otherwise, for many different reasons, not have the chance to get on the water.

Sailability will select suitable candidates for the scheme and will kick off the training, with STC taking them onto the next level. Initially the aim is to get all participants to achieve the Hong Kong Sailing Federation Level 2 qualification. However, there may be chance for keen and able students to continue further with sail training—this further opportunity will be developed in due course. It was great to see the first participants on the water at the Open Day and to witness the sheer joy that they expressed following their experiences.

The Open Day was followed very quickly—STC obviously like to challenge themselves with two big occasions in two weeks—by the Open Dinghy Regatta, held on 18/19 May 2019 and sponsored by Team Sheldon and North Sails, when over 200 dinghy sailors descended on the waters of Port Shelter. I am sure that there will be a few photos elsewhere in this edition of Hebe Jebes.

Looking forward, the Sailing Committee is making preparations for a busy summer season of keelboat racing. The notices of Race are on the HHYC website for the UK Sailmakers Typhoon Series and Peroni Summer Saturday Series, starting on 9 June and 15 June 2019, respectively. By the time this article is printed, the sailing instructions should be out, with full details of the Mirs Bay weekend which has been brought forward to 23/24 June 2019.

Even if you can’t commit to the entire nine-race Typhoon Series, sign up and join the inaugural Mirs Bay Regatta comprising the Passage Race on the Saturday and Return Pursuit Race on the Sunday—not to mention the infamous overnight party at Wong Shek Pier! The Countess Cup will be awarded to the overall winner of the two HKPN races.

The Open Day, this year held on Saturday, 4 May 2019, is always one of the biggest events for the Club, with over 2,000 visitors attending and participating in many different watersports. This took a lot of effort on the part of all of the Club management, in particular the staff of the Sail Training Centre. All are to be congratulated on a very successful day that went off without a hitch and thankfully no safety incidents.

開放日的重點活動，是新鴻基 Scallywag 基金推出的全新帆船計劃。基金 與Sailability和白沙灣遊艇會帆船訓練中心合作，向小童和年輕人提供帆船 體驗。Sailability負責挑選合適的人選參與計劃，並且開展訓練工作，然後 帆船訓練中心接手培訓。計劃初步目標是，讓所有參加者獲得香港帆船總會 二級資歷。有志提升水平的學員，有機會進一步接受培訓。我們正著手研究 開發升級課程。開放日當天，我們非常高興，看到第一批的學員下水，雀躍 地體驗帆船之樂。 開放日之後不夠兩個星期，帆船訓練中心籌辦了公開小帆大賽。比賽在 2019年5月18和19號舉行，由 Team Sheldon 和 North Sails 贊助。賽事 中超過200名小帆船員在牛尾海出發，相信大家在本期的 Hebe Jebes 中， 可以看到部份活動期間拍的照片。展望未來，賽事委員會正密鑼緊鼓籌備夏 季的龍骨船競賽。比賽通告已上載於白沙灣遊艇會網址，英國 Sailmakers 颱風系列賽和 Peroni 夏季週末賽將分別於6月9日和6月15日開展。大家讀 到這份報告的時候，航行細則應該已經登出，包括提前在6月23-24日舉行 的大鵬灣週末的詳情。就算你不能參與整個颱風系列賽的九場賽事，也可以 登記出席大鵬灣帆船賽的開賽典禮，當中包括了星期六的航行比賽、週日的 回程追逐賽，和絕對不能錯過的黃石碼頭通宵派對！兩項HKPN賽事的總冠 軍，將會獲頒 Countess Cup。 我在寫這篇文章的時候，突然收到Vince Christian英年早逝的消息。白沙灣 遊艇會眾人都很熟悉Vince，他在本港和亞洲的帆船圈子裡也很有名，Vince 多年來也是我們賽事委員會的成員。Vince 之前負責 Hebe Jebes 的編輯 工作長達十年，讓我們的會刊內容不斷提升、精益求精。Vince是我的好 朋友，我們在1996年認識，當時他剛開始參與帆船活動，駕駛Tara出海。 當時他經常邀請我與他一起坐其他帆船出海，例如 Stella和 Minnie and Kingsman。相信大家都會非常懷念Vince循循善誘的航行建議和搞笑的性 格。這是本會傷心的一天。

As I wind up the draft of this piece, the very shocking news has just come to me, of the sudden and early passing of Vince Christian. Vince was well known to sailors in HHYC and across the Hong Kong and Asian sailing communities and was a member of the Sailing Committee for many years.

Vince was the Editor of Hebe Jebes for around a decade and the person responsible to bring the content and presentation to the next level. Finally, Vince was a close personal friend, since I first met him—as a very green sailor—crewing on Tara in 1996, and he frequently invited me to join him on other boats that he crewed including Stella, Minnie and Kingsman to name a few of the more recent. We will all surely miss Vince’s sage sailing advice and cutting banter—a very sad day for HHYC.

CLUB UPDATES

Many cases of swapping boats and selling with grandfather rights have been identified recently. A number of members, however, did not seem to have a good grasp of the relevant club rules, and have encountered many hurdles in the process. We advise you to consult the Marine Office (and read the by-laws) beforehand, to avoid any unnecessary delay.

The Club is currently handling maintenance and replacement of the swinging moorings. Before the works are completed (and before the typhoon season hits), we advise you to check your moorings more frequently, especially your bridles and swivel. If you notice any abnormality with other members’ moorings, including these components, please extend your assistance and notify them or the Marine Office.

As we enter the fishing season, we urge all members to follow government guidelines and apply for proper licences. Above all, maintain safekeeping of your spearguns, and keep in mind the safety of other members. To avoid accidents, please do not bring your spearguns to any crowded places in the Club.

The Club should be justifiably proud of how far the STC has come in such a relatively short period of time, especially when compared to other sailing centres around the world that have been operating for much longer. This is due in part to the enthusiasm of our participants, the dedication of the entire staff at the STC, the encouragement of parents and finally the support of all the club members.

THE TWITTERING TENS THE HEBE HAVEN SAIL TRAINING CENTRE The Hebe Haven Sail Training Centre (STC) has seen a number of exciting changes and transitions since its birth in 2003. The Club started with a small fleet of dinghies parked on the boatyard slipway, next to a beaten up old container. Things rapidly changed from these humble beginnings, with the STC becoming a hive of both mid-week and weekend activity for members and non-members alike, as people of all ages and abilities take to the water to either race, or participate in one of the many training programmes that we offer in the Haven itself, or out through the Gap into Port Shelter.

Over the past 10 years, we have witnessed successive spurts of growth as the STC has expanded when funds were made available. Club events have become bigger and more professional, as the number of dinghies participating in them has increased dramatically. This is a clear change in tack, since in early times only a few members and their kids could be found sailing around the cans on a Saturday afternoon in whatever boats they could scrape together in order to get out and enjoy themselves on the water.

Now the STC is a fun and vibrant place, where anyone who is interested in learning to sail or improving their sailing skills, is most welcome. We run a variety of courses to match participant’s age and ability, as well as their interest—be it racing or just cruising for pleasure.

Regattas at Hebe are now a common occurrence for both dinghy and keelboat enthusiasts. Most weekends, you will be able to participate in diverse forms of racing from dinghies to keelboats, either skippering your own dinghy or crewing on board a member’s yacht.

If it is cruising rather than racing that you’re after, we organise cruising events on most public holidays. This may take the form of a ‘sail away’ BBQ to one of the fantastic local beaches within easy reach of the Club.

Many local schools also take part in our STC-based programmes, and this is where we get the opportunity to share the experience of outdoor water-based adventure to those who may not have had the chance to participate in such activities before. We believe that these outreach programmes are essential for the future development of the Club as they serve to help attract the next generation of club members.

We also believe that our in-house training programmes are extremely important, where we focus on offering our more experienced and keen sailors the opportunity to join the STC staff as Assistant Instructors (AIs). Through our programme we have already seen a significant number of participants go on and become Instructors, passing on their skills and experience to the next generation of young sailors coming through the STC system.

航海訓練中心 (STC) 自 2003 年成立以來歷經多次改革和轉變，成果喜 人。本會初期只是由小艇組成的小型船隊，停泊在船塢的船台上，與破舊的 集裝箱為伍。但本會歷經更迭，現在STC已經成為會員和非會員的週中期和 週末的活動中心，不同年齡層的人士開始接近水域，從事比賽、參加白沙灣 舉辦的眾多訓練活動或是通過峽道進入牛尾海。 在過去的 10 年中，我們見證了資金到位時一些迅速興起，使 STC 得以擴 展至現今的規模。俱樂部的活動規模越來越大、越來越專業，加入俱樂部的 小艇數量飆升。這是一個顯而易見的轉變，因為在早期，只有少數會員及其 孩子可以在週六下午召集各式船隻出海活動，享受生活。 現在的 STC 是一個充滿樂趣和活力的地方，我們無限歡迎有志於學習航行 或是改進航行技術的所有人士。我們推出各種課程以滿足不同年齡和能力 的人士的需求，同時亦力求滿足不同人士的興趣，使他們既可以參加比賽訓 練，也可以悠遊消遣。 白沙灣現在經常舉辦劃艇和龍骨船比賽。您可以在大部分週末參加不同類型 的比賽，既有劃艇，也有龍骨船，既可以擔任自有劃艇的領隊，也可以在會 員的遊艇上當一回隊員。 如果您更喜歡乘船巡遊而不是參加比賽，我們也會在大部分公共假日裏組織 不同的遊海活動。活動形式可能是「遠航」至離俱樂部不遠的迷人海灘上進 行燒烤。 當地許多學校也參加了我們的 STC 基地活動，我們可以籍此機會與那些之 前無法參加類似活動的人士分享室外水上探險的體驗。我們相信這些擴展活 動對俱樂部未來的發展非常重要，可以吸引新一代的俱樂部會員。 我們也相信內部訓練活動極其重要，在這方面我們側重為富有經驗和熱衷於 水上運動的選手提供機會，讓他們加入 STC 員工團隊，擔任助理教練(AIs) 。現在已有大量此類人員通過我們的活動成為教練，將他們的技能和經驗傳 授給 STC 系統中的新一代年輕選手。 STC 在相對較短的時間內發展至現今規模，足以讓俱樂部引以為豪，特別 是與世界各地運作時間較長的其他訓練中心相比時更是如此。這一盛況既歸 功於參與人員的熱情，也有賴 STC 全體員工的付出和工作，更離不開所有 俱樂部會員的鼎力支持。
