Elsewhere in this issue you will read about the successes of the Hebe Dragons Race Team in Hong Kong Race Week. This is an international event arranged by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. The Hebe Dragons Race Team excelled by dominating the prizes. My heartfelt congratulations go to the team members and to their coaches.

現任的執行委員會已經工作了一段時間，大家看到這份報告的時候，再過六 個月就是週年大會的日子。大會安排在十月十六日舉行，而十月五/六日的週 末，就是24小時慈善小艇賽的日子。希望大家馬上記下這些重要的日子。 這期的Hebe Jebes裏面，大家會讀到我們的Dragons Race團隊在香港帆船賽 週獲得驕人成績。這個比賽，是香港遊艇會舉辦的國際盛事。Hebe Dragons 在賽事中囊括多獎項。我衷心恭喜各位團員和教練。 差不多十年前，Mike 和 Kay Rawbone 帶領一小撮人，構思並成立了白沙灣 Sailability信託。這實在是重大的成就，去年的十一月，就有303位傷健人士， 一起揚帆出海。今年十一月二十三日，就是Sailability成立的十週年慶典，請大 家也記下這個重要的日子。

Just under 10 years ago a small group of members led by Mike and Kay Rawbone conceived and established the Hebe Haven Sailability Trust. This is a magnificent achievement, and as an example, 303 different sailors with a disability were sailing in November 2018. The 10 th Anniversary Celebration is on 23 November later this year and this is another date for your diary.

上星期三月二十二日，遊艇會舉辦了一次聯合活動：帆船之夜、Sailability頒獎 夜、會員迎新派對、25年會員獎和義工嘉許夜。這是我們第一次把各項活動集 合一起舉行。當晚出席人數眾多，大家共度了歡樂時光。詳情請參閱本刊其他 文章。

Last Friday, 22 March, the Club hosted a combined event to celebrate the Sailors Awards Night, Sailability Awards Night, the New Members Party, the 25-year Members Awards and the Volunteers Appreciation Night. This is the first time that all events have been combined. It was extremely well-attended and a great night. There are more details in this issue.

我想特別鳴謝一位四十五年來一直非常活躍支持遊艇會的會員—Lesley Anderson。她在1973年加入遊艇會，是第一批參與賽事訓練的人。無論揚帆 出海、各項比賽或者巡航活動，Lesley都一直非常踴躍參與。她服務過無數的 委員會，在賽事管理的層面，多年來也一直擔當義工。我非常感謝Lesley多年 來的貢獻，並恭喜她達致驕人的成就。

I would like to mention one member who has been active for 45 years—Lesley Anderson joined the Club in 1973. She was one of the first people involved in sail training and has been active in sailing, racing and cruising; has served on countless committees; and been a regular volunteer for race management. I extend my appreciation to Lesley for her service and my congratulations for her achievements.

The General Committee is working well and will shortly debate the budget for the coming year and the forecast to 2027. The Articles of Association are being updated in preparation for consultation with, and ultimately the approval of members at an EGM later this year. In parallel with this, there is a review of the Club’s by-laws. Other matters being worked on will be mentioned in reports from the Vice-Commodore and the Rear Commodores for Sailing and Operations.

We are now well into the term of this General Committee and, by the time that you read this, it will be just under six months until the Annual General Meeting. The scheduled date is 16 October and this is just after the 24HR Charity Dinghy Race on the weekend of 5/6 October. These are incredibly important events and I ask that you mark your diaries now, please.

最後，我要說說新鴻基Scallywag基金。Scallywag船隊參與了今年的Volvo Ocean Race，在到達香港中途站一程領先。新鴻基正支持發展一個帆船項目，讓弱勢 兒童和青少年參與。Scallywag 基金希望與白沙灣 Sailability 信託和本遊艇會 合作，建立伙伴關係。執行委員會原則上接納此項榮譽，Rob Quinlivan 正帶 領一個工作小組探索是次合作機會。

In closing, I would like to mention the Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Foundation.

Scallywag was an entry in this year’s Volvo Ocean Race stop-over in Hong Kong and it came first in the leg leading to that stop-over. Sun Hung Kai is supporting an initiative to develop a sailing programme for less advantaged children and young adults in Hong Kong. The Foundation is seeking to partner with the Hebe Haven Sailability Trust and our Club. This is an honour which has been accepted in principle by the General Committee. A working group led by Rob Quinlivan is exploring this opportunity.

Summer Sailing activities have been planned and will be well underway in the next couple of months commencing on 8 May with the HHYC sunset challenge days each Wednesday evening and then the following month on 5 June. Please contact Joyce Har on sailadmin@hhyc.org.hk.

HHYC hosts our very own ranking regatta, gratefully sponsored by Team Sheldon on 18 and 19 May. At the time of writing, the entries are coming in thick and fast.

The UK Sailmakers Typhoon Series commences on 9 June and runs throughout the summer with the final prize-giving party ending on 24 August and the Peroni Summer Saturday Series commencing on 15 June and finishing on 10 August.

During the next few months we will be focusing on the planning of the 24HR Charity Dinghy Race scheduled for 5 and 6 October. With our ever popular and extremely enthusiastic Bridget Chan as the Chairperson this year, we are hoping to engage more corporate teams to help reach our fundraising target which is a lucky $888,888.

We are also planning to have more dinghies entering with the addition of an Optimist Class and will be reaching out to sponsors to donate funds for individual things that need sponsoring such as fuel, portable toilets, the sound system and other support items that help to make a successful weekend. A presentation board will be posted in the bar and will show progress and updates as the event develops. Don’t forget our club boat Hebe One which is available for Charter. We have put together some great packages for members to enjoy including a birthday month promotion whereby if you book the boat during this time you will be entitled to 20% off the rental fee or with a food and beverage spending on the boat of $2,000 you will be entitled to $1,000 discount on the rental and a complimentary 3 bottles of Prosecco.

Other offers include team-building events in conjunction with the Sail Training Centre team or if you host a banqueting function at the Club and spend over $30,000 for a single private party we will give you 30% discount on the boat rental and for each $10,000 spent thereafter an equivalent discount. Wedding parties will also be included with a short cruise including photoshoots,canapes and champagne.

The 6th edition of the Hong Kong Race Week (HKRW) was held from 14 February to 18 February. Competing in the event were 245 sailors from 10 nations including China, Cambodia, India, Macau, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and first-time entries Guam, Myanmar, Norway and Sweden. This year, the Optimist Green Fleet took an extra challenge with not less than 47 sailors from four countries.

The aim of the Green Fleet Experience Regatta was to introduce new sailors to racing, build their confidence and integrate them into the regatta scene. The HKRW event was held over a three-day period and comprised of a lecture by Ian Fleming who reminded all the sailors of the basics of racing such as the various flags one may see on the committee boat, the starting sequence, basic manners and of course what to expect on the day.

Hebe Haven was well represented with seven Dragons. For all of them, but Vianney, it was their first ever regatta. Due to the large number of competitors, it was decided to equally split the fleet into two for the Green Fleet Committee to concentrate more on one-on-one coaching while on the water. While the first fleet was racing, the other one was waiting for their turn in the waiting area behind the committee boat. The Green Committee led by Ian Fleming and the HKODA Green Fleet team had in place not less than four boats on the race course to check and give advice to the young sailors in the smaller course of the main fleet.

The fantastic conditions on the first day of sailing enabled all sailors to sail to the funnel of Repulse Bay for their practice start followed by four races. All the sailors were excited to join such an event and at the same time felt relaxed for not having the pressure of the main fleet.

Thanks to their extensive training, our Dragons largely dominated the first day with a close battle between Vianney Bourrut Lacouture, a Chinese and a RHKYC sailor. Heidi Bates was the first girl overall at the end of Friday. Sadly, Felix Mulder had a Did Not Finish (DNF) in the second race after a 1st in the first race which badly placed him at the end of the first day.

On the second day, the same format was used with fleets racing in view of creating a Gold and Silver fleet on the last day. The nice breeze and hot day made the races fantastic

for all sailors. Great tactics were used by most of the sailors.

Despite being ‘Green’, none of the racers were left behind and all of them managed to finish each course.

Starts were done with some usual ‘Starboard’ shouting from the most experienced ones. Felix came back in force by swinging from 1st to 3rd in his fleet while Vianney was doing the same in his own one. At the end of the day, the two sailors were at the same number of points ready for the final race on the last day. Heidi also made it to the Gold Squad with a nice 9th position.

Sunday saw drastic changes of weather conditions with gusts reaching 25 knots. After a long lecture while waiting for the wind to drop or stabilise in order to complete the finals, the race director decided to call it a day for safety reasons. The main fleet was returning one by one with tired sailors, same for the Lasers with some spectacular capsizes while entering Middle Island’s funnel.

Sadly, the two fleets were not able to sail together or against each other resulting in a perfect tie between Felix and Vianney with nine points each. Felix eventually took the honours as he arrived 1st in the 5th race while Vianney was 2nd. Heidi remained at 9th position (and 3rd girl) while Jamie Tsang finished 18th, Ivy So 34th, Jasper Liauw 41st and Kristopher Carman 44th after missing the first day due to school. Kudos to Kristopher who was one of the few sailors to never give up and tried his best to finish the race.

Our Green Fleet team is now well on track to making some future Dragons. At the time of writing, the HKODA Green Fleet Spring Regatta would have happened. Best of luck to all of you.

HONG KONG RACE WEEK REPORT 香港帆船賽週報告

The Hebe Dragons Optimist squad show-cased their continual improvement in the four-day Hong Kong Race Week event held at Middle Island. The highlights of the event for the Dragons were excellent performances from Peter Jessop taking the Under 12 Category, and Seb Van Ommeren taking overall victory in the Silver Fleet.

The Optimist main fleet attracted 98 sailors from seven countries competing, up from last year’s 75 competitors, showing the rapid and continued growth of the Optimist class in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay region. The large number of competitors made the launching of boats a timely affair, but it was strictly and efficiently managed by the RHKYC. A relatively humid easterly airstream affected the South China coast throughout the four-day regatta, giving the sailors choppy sea conditions and wind speeds varying between 10 to 20 knots. Coming from their normal training grounds of Port Shelter, this proved to be particularly challenging for the young sailors. Rigorous coaching from Alfy and Antonio kept the team focused, and delivered some tremendous results.

On the 4th day conditions were particularly hairy. With an average of 20 knots and gusts up to 35 knots, nearly half of the fleet had to retire. Boats were capsizing, equipment was breaking and bailers were getting a workout. After a capsize and a Did Not Finish (DNF) in the first race of the day, Alisha showed true determination to come back and complete the final two races. It’s a credit to the Dragons that all members of the team persevered and competed in each race. A year ago, similar conditions brought out multiple DNS’s from the team.

The performance of the day was surely Seb Van Ommeren winning the final Silver Fleet race, to secure the top of the podium for the Silver Fleet. Seb was very pleased, saying, “Hong Kong Race Week was a great experience to improve my sailing ability and sail at other clubs.”

Overall it was an excellent regatta that tested the sailors' abilities to the fullest. The experience will definitely grow the Dragons' confidence for the upcoming races.

On the first day, constantly shifting wind caused a lengthy delay to the start of racing. When the course was finally set and the sailors got under way for the first race, Peter Jessop impressed with a solid 5th place. To make Alfy even happier, Peter had a great start in the second race, leading the fleet on the first beat to eventually finishing 3rd.

On the second day it was Mason Wilkinson’s turn to shine, showing that with a bit of concentration he can battle with the top contenders achieving a 6th place in the 7th race. Faber Liauw and Alisha Hester both showed they are continuing to improve reaching a highest placing in a race of 13th and 16th respectively. Brilliant stuff, considering the size of the fleet, and depth of the competition.

一連四天的香港帆船賽，在燙波洲舉行。Hebe Dragons Optimist隊伍展示實力，今年成績更上一層樓。Peter Jessop勇奪12歲以下年齡組別冠軍，Seb Van Ommeren更 取得整體賽事第一名。 Optimist主隊吸引了來自七個國家的九十八位選手參賽，去 年參賽人數是七十五人，顯示香港和大灣區Optimist級別持 續快速增長。由於參賽人數眾多，船隻下水需時，不過香港 遊艇會做事嚴謹高效，一切順利完成。 比賽期間，整個南中國海岸都受到潮濕的偏東氣流影響。海 面波濤洶湧，風速高達10至20海里。對於平常在牛尾海一 帶訓練的年輕選手來說，這次比賽份外具挑戰性。感謝教練 Alfy和Antonio，協助團隊保持專注，取得優異成績。 比賽第一天，風向不斷改變，導致賽事開展有所延誤。賽道 終於安排好之後，選手整裝待發，展開第一場比賽。Peter Jessop表現出色，穩守第五位。第二場Peter表現更佳，勇 奪第二位，讓教練Alfy喜出望外。經過第一輪比賽，團隊最 終以第三名完成。

比賽進入第二天，輪到Mason Wilkinson大發異彩，全神貫 注與頂級選手比拼，在第七場取得第六位。Faber Liauw和 Alisha Hester技術水平不斷提升，最佳成績分別是第十三位 和第十六位。考慮到船隊的規模和賽事的深度，各位選手的 成績實在讓人鼓舞。 到了賽事第四天，戰況越益激烈。風速平均20海里，陣風 高達35海里，幾乎一半船隊需要退出。好多船隻傾覆、設 備故障，需要水斗出動。當日第一場比賽Alisha船隻傾覆， 無法完成比賽。Alisha顯示出正真的毅力，奮勇完成剩下的 兩場賽事。Dragon團隊發揮堅毅精神，完成所有賽事。一 年之前，同樣的情況會導致一個團隊多次無法完成比賽。 當日表現最突出的，肯定是Seb Van Ommeren。Seb贏了最 後一場Silver Fleet賽事，穩坐Silver Fleet的冠軍寶座。Seb 賽後表示：「香港帆船賽週是一個非常好的體驗，讓我有機 會改善自己的技巧，更可以到其他遊艇會積累經驗。」 總體來說，這次帆船賽非常精彩，考驗了所有選手的能力。 這次體驗讓Dragon建立信心，迎接未來更多的賽事。

The last regatta for Laser in Hong Kong was the Hebe Haven Open Regatta in May 2018. Owing to devastation of Typhoon Mangkhut, the Hong Kong Laser Nationals originally incorporated in the ABC Southside Regatta in December 2018 was cancelled. The Laser sailors have waited nine months to compete on our waters again in the Hong Kong Race Week 2019 in mid-February. That long period of waiting has seen a strong desire to be back on the water from abroad as well. Sailors have taken this event as a feeder regatta to other international regattas, inspired by the legend of Harshita Tomar from India who ranked 7th in Laser 4.7 of the HKRW 2018 and a few months later stood on the podium of the Asian Games 2018 as a bronze medalist. International sailors from 10 nations joined the HKRW this year making it an international regatta on its own right. Hebe Dragons have sent six sailors in the Laser 4.7 and one sailor in the Laser Radial. In terms of size, the Laser 4.7 fleet this year is among the greatest in Asia comprising 33 sailors.

In terms of wind, there was a mix of conditions, each challenging in its own way through the four-day regatta with twelve races completed in Laser 4.7. On days one and two, the wind was from light to moderate yet still fair enough for racing. On day three, the wind picked up a lot with a clear blue sky. On day four, the wind was usually strong with an average of 20 knots and gusts up to 35 knots. The Laser course was then moved closer to the coast off Stanley Bay. The sailors deployed dramatic action for fighting positions as well as enduring plenty of capsizes.

The regatta displayed diverse conditions putting sailors to a different test each day.

Indeed, it’s a result of the combined effort that the Hebe Dragons have galvanized through the nine-month period.

They have been working hard on the water and in the gymnasium outside the Club. Coach Alfred has arranged numerous training programmes and overseas regattas to drive the sailors to excel among the local sailors. The Club has been harboured reasonably safe during Typhoon Mangkhut and blessed with the diligent staff to protect our boats. We have been lucky to resume training soon after the typhoon. We must congratulate our sailors for their great performance and wish all of them more success in the future. Here below lists the results:

2018年5月舉行的白沙灣帆船賽，是對上一次香港Laser可以 參加的賽事。由於颱風山竹襲港，2018年12月本來在 ABC 舉行的香港 Laser Nationals 比賽被迫取消。Laser 船員等 待了九個月，才終於在2019年2月中，再次在香港水域出 賽。長久的等待，讓國外的選手也趨之若鶩，抓緊機會出 海。此次比賽，被視為進入國際帆船賽的跳板。當中一個 很好的例子，就是來自印度的 Harshita Tomar，他在2018 香港帆船賽週Laser 4.7取得第七名，數個月後在2018年亞 運會再下一城，勇奪銅牌。今年，有來自十個國家的勁兒 參與香港帆船賽週，讓這項活動躍身國際賽事行列。Hebe Dragons 派出六位選手參加 Laser 4.7比賽，一位選手出戰 Laser Redial。今年的 Laser 4.7 船隊陣容鼎盛，共有三十 三位勁兒，位列亞洲船隊之首。

賽事為期四天，當中天氣狀況多變，風速時強時弱，帶來各 種挑戰。Laser 4.7共完成12場賽事。第一天和第二天，出現 微風與和風，風速不強，但是足以開展比賽。到了第三天， 風勢增強，一片藍天。第四日風速平均20海里，疾風高達 35海里，Laser賽道因此移近赤柱灣。一眾勁兒奮勇爭先， 當中不少船隻傾覆。比賽期間戰況多變，為各位選手帶來各 種考驗。

Nevertheless, in Laser 4.7, our sailor Patrick got five bullets and even secured his worst at the 5th after discarding two races. This put him straight to the champion of the regatta, 15 points ahead of Rammilan Yadav (IND) in 2nd place. Last year, the top ten overall had six sailors from the local clubs.

This year the keen competition from the international sailors left only three sailors in the top 10, adding Lumiere at 7th and Jeremy at 8th. The trio have improved substantially from last year—Patrick (15th), Lumiere (22nd) and Jeremy (24th). Other Dragons were also improving drastically and moving towards even brighter futures.

In the Club, as we gathered before the race, the flags barely fluttered in a light breeze. Little did we know what was to unfold in the coming few hours!!

Heading out to the start, the wind was already starting to build past the 10 knot mark. The wind had obviously been light, though, when the Committee Boat went out into Port Shelter, as it took us a while to get to the starting area near Shelter Island. For the IRC start at 14:00, the Race Officer recorded 15 knots—it was great to see Jelik, Lighthouse Alpha and Ambush joining the Spring Series. Onboard Ichiban there was even talk of needing a reef at some point during the race and whilst we didn’t resort to that, there were times when it may have been warranted.

In strong winds, the 13 HKPN boats and 4 J-80s set themselves up conservatively for the start, there was none of the normal jostling for position. Robert on the helm made an excellent start about 2 boat lengths from the Committee boat and just below Scintilla—who would be one of our performance markers for the rest of the race. To leeward of Ichiban was the J80 - Jelik 6 and Amaze; fortunately the expected push up from Jelik 6 did not materialize, so a clean start was possible.

Onward to the short first mark, Bits and Pieces led the fleet with LoTech also going well. Scintilla and Amaze stayed just ahead of Ichiban, with Temujin some way behind as the boats tacked onto port for the next leg to Bluff. Windseeker must have had a slow start as she was way back, but Scrumpy was belying her high handicap and making good speed. On the way to Bluff, it was hard work with constant adjustment of the main to look after the helm in the significant gusts—20+ knots at some points. There was one very strange hole in the lea of Kau Sai Chau, which affected some more than others. Onboard Ichiban it took us a while to get going again after a complete step whereas Temujin barely affected, passed Ichiban and took a material lead. We didn’t get close to Temujin again all afternoon.

The next decision was the timing of the next tack into the Bluff-Basalt channel—always a major decision. Temujin tacked early and would have to do a further double tack to enter the channel. Bits and Pieces’ and one other, we thought, went too far before tacking. Onboard Ichiban we timed the tack about right, in order to deal with the usual headers knocking you closer to Bluff, and managed to complete the channel on starboard tack. I took over the helm from Robert once we had cleared the Bluff corner, for the downwind leg.

The next leg after escaping the channel was Bluff to Trio (s), so we immediately started to prepare the spinnaker for a conventional port hoist. Boats ahead were all heading across towards Bay Islet, before gybing, whereas we readied for an early gybe, especially as this would be a first gybe for this particular crew combination. Regrettably though, at the point when we were ready for the manoeuvre, an IRC boat was heading north for her Bluff (s) rounding and was right on our line. This caused me to conservatively delay the gybe. This slight delay put us about 200m further west than ideal, which meant that the wind was on the beam for much of the journey to Trio. Having said that, the wind was constantly shifting about 75 degrees from beam toward stern and gusting by 5+ knots at various times. There were 2-3 times on the leg, when Andrew struggled to hold the spinnaker and I struggled to hold the course. Nevertheless, we made up about 250m on Scintilla and Amaze. At one point we overtook Scintilla, but struggled to get clear, as she woke up to our challenge and improved her boat speed.

A number of factors, guided my next conservative decision as we approached Trio (s). Firstly, Ichiban was the windward and overtaking boat to Scintilla so needed to keep clear. Alongside this the manouvre required a drop on starboard followed by a gybe and again, I was slightly nervous regarding the inexperienced crew and our proximity to Scintilla. Thirdly, I forgot how long the eastern face of Trio is. Consequently, I called for a spinnaker drop much too early, before we arrived at Trio. Once Trio was cleared we gybed earlier than Scintilla (now back to 100m ahead) and Amaze (about 50m further) both of whom had left their spinnakers up until the last moment. As we started to slowly harden up into the strong starboard wind, keeping the main Trio islands close, we had one scary moment when a gust rounded us up towards the rocks—fortunately we still had steering room to bring Ichiban back under control!!

The next leg of a very interesting course was back up to the Bay Islet Mark (BIM), which was completed without too much drama. Scintilla and Amaze had stretched their leads again on the upwind leg, so the final downwind leg to Table (s) and then LPB finish would be key to Ichiban’s race result. After the BIM rounding we set about preparing for a starboard spinnaker hoist. Everything was set up in good order, but the hoisting was unusually troublesome. John, who was pulling the halyard at the mast was really struggling with the hoist from about half way; the final 2-3 m had to be winched up. Robert put it down to the fact that strong wind pushed the halyard, which is set up for the more conventional port spinnaker, onto the forestay; but it did seem a bit strange. Spinnaker hoisted, finally, we set about chasing down the boats ahead.

San Miguel Monsoon Series Race 3—16 March 2019

Approaching Table island, we had strong gusts again and struggled to control the boat. The rounding of Table would require a spinnaker gybe for the final journey to the finish, so we prepared for this well in advance and, again, gybed at least 100m earlier that other boats around us. After we settled in for the final push, we looked ahead and both Scintilla and Amaze were having spinnaker problems (little did we know what was to come for us later). Amaze had managed to comprehensively wrap her spinnaker round the forestay, so limped home under main only. Scintilla didn’t have a spinnaker up at all – a deliberate choice?

– so was heading home under white sails. The final results showed that Ichiban finished 2:04 and 1:55 mins behind Amaze and Scintilla, respectively. Further ahead Bits and Pieces had taken their usual line honours, but were within the 17 mins handicap difference between us; not so Temujin and LoTech who comfortable beat Ichiban on handicap. Behind, we also knew that Scrumpy and Seahorse both had handicap advantages which would be difficult to overcome. We speculate on fifth and so it proved.

In true Ichiban tradition, newcomer James was sent below for the beers, but this proved to me a bad move when it came to dropping the spinnaker some 10 mins later. In short, the halyard was stuck at the block and was resistant against many strategies to free it; this dilemma was exacerbated by the 15+knot winds that persisted. Eventually and luckily —by sailing downwind and flying the spinnaker forward and high—we somehow managed to coax the halyard down. That said the halyard was firmly stuck once we got back to the mooring. This required a visit up the mast for Robert and a replacement block, before the next race.

Monsoon Spring Series 2019— Onboard Outrageous

Race one of the Hebe Haven 2019 monsoon series was held in mid March under cloudy skies, but a freshening SE breeze.

Gerry Daughton was back on the helm, as both he and Jan were back visiting Hong Kong from the UK. Nigel Slattery, RO, and Eric Tolmer ARO laid a good sized course for the IRC fleets, taking us out of port Shelter via club mark, around Bluff, clockwise, across to Steep Island mark, reversing our course , back to Bluff Island, then finally across to leave Table Island to starboard, and the finish off at little palm beach.

We got a clean start down towards the pin end of the line, for the short beat up to the Club mark. Unfortunately for Outrageous, there was no doubt the committee boat end of the line was favoured, and at the Club mark we were hung out to dry, waiting for the rest of the fleet above us to tack, before coming onto port for the beat to the south.

The highlight of this short leg was seeing Jelik come steaming through the IRC fleet. Frank Pong had laid back in the prestart sequence, but once the gun went (well horn these days), Jelik stamped her authority over the fleet.

Seeing her all powered up passing us just to weather never gets old.

On Outrageous we made good work of the beat out to the Bay island mark, leading the IRC 2 fleet, trailing only the IRC 1 big boys of Jelik, Ambush, and Quest.

Both Ambush, and Quest stood on at the mark feigning a midrace stop at Yao Lai for squid and to gain a better angle for the east end of Bluff Island. The mark was below the lay line, so the question was which side to tack onto.

On board Outrageous, the afterguard discussed the best strategy, and in the end the decision was made to follow the IRC 1 fleet east before tacking. Well behind Outrageous, Talking Head reached Bay island mark, and we waited to see what course she would choose. The answer came quickly indeed, as they tacked immediately at the mark and split towards Bluff. Which side would pay?

Once on port tack, the answer came when we had to crack the sheets, and brought the bow down, as clearly we were too high. Approaching Bluff, we crossed Talking Head on port, but there wasn’t a lot in it, and they’d clearly been lifted in close to the north side of Bluff.

Passing the gap between Bluff and Basalt Islands brought the inevitable patchy winds, but once clear of the leeside of Basalt, the winds filled in and it was a reach across to Steep.

The wind had freshened nicely, and with the number one Genoa up, and a following sea it was an exciting ride across.

Discussions ensued over whether or not to peel to the number 2 Genoa, but as we were just off the wind, with the sheets cracked, we were able to carry the number one. Just!

這條短賽程的亮點在於看到 Jelik 在 IRC 船隊中呼嘯而 過。Frank Pong對於開始順序並非十分嚴格，但是一旦發 令槍響 (現在用響號了)，Jelik 就顯示了她的權威。見到她 動力十足，呼嘯而過，徒留我們望其背影而興嘆。

Rounding Steep mark, it was more of the same on the way back to Bluff, close teaching, and the fleet holding station with each other. Rounding Bluff, the second and final time, it was finally time to hoist the spinnakers for the run towards Table Island, and the finish off Little Palm Beach.

Ambush 與 Quest 停在標記線上，假裝是在Yao Lai 終於站 撈魷魚，意圖爭得一個去砂糖口山東端的更好角度。標記 線低於方位線，因此問題在於向哪個方向搶航。

With a fresh breeze, and following seas, we were up to 10 knots coming down the two meter seas, for and exhilarating run towards table. With Gerry helming, and Colin Johnson trimming the kite, they made what were challenging conditions pass without drama, and there were several broaches in the fleet in the leg.

Talking Head was still in close attendance to us, and although we were able to sail deeper with the symmetrical kite, she was still making good VMG with the asymmetric.

All that was left was a gybe onto starboard for the table rounding, and all in all it was a low workload day for JB and I on the foredeck.

Big thanks to Nigel, and Eric and the rest of the RO team for setting a great course on a fine day to be out on the water.

我們乾淨俐落的出發，朝向航線浮標記，短距離迎風行駛 即可到達會所標記。不幸的是，對於Outrageous來說， 毫無疑問，線尾的委員會船更爲受益。而且，在會所標記 處，我們被晾在一邊，等待上面的其他船隊進行迎風轉 舷，之後我們才能進入港口迎風南駛。

在Outrageous船上，我們迎風駛向匙洲標記時做得不錯， 領先 IRC 船隊，僅落後於 IRC 1 的幾隻大傢伙 Jelik、 Ambush、與Quest。

在Outrageous船上，后瞭望哨討論了最佳策略，最終決定 在搶航前跟隨IRC 1船隊往東。落後在Outrageous的Talking Head到達了匙洲標記，我們等著看她會選擇什麼航線。我 們很快就得到了答案，因為他們在標記處立即轉向，並向 砂糖口山分頭駛去。哪一方會付出代價呢？ 一旦到了左舷，答案就出現了，因爲那時我們不得不解開 帆腳索，放低船頭，因為顯然之前我們太高了。駛近砂糖 口山，我們在左舷越過Talking Head 一點點，他們顯然被 升力帶到了砂糖口山的北側。 穿過砂糖口山和火石洲之間的窄道，不可避免帶來了無規 律的風，但是一旦將火石洲的背風面拋在後面，風吹進 來，讓我們直達青洲。風變得清爽宜人，前有排在第一位 的Genoa，後有大海波浪追逐，這次旅程令人興奮。隨後的 討論是否要離隊轉向2號Genoa，但由於我們剛剛非迎風行 駛，腳帆索已解開，我們只能夠僅僅跟隨第一名。 繞過青洲標記，返回砂糖口山的航程與之前差不多。我們 進行了近距指導，全體船員相互之間也保持好自己的崗 位。繞過砂糖口山，我們第二次 (也是最後一次)，升起大三 角帆，衝向平面洲，到達小棕林沙灘完成比賽。 伴隨著清風、海浪，我們在2米高的海浪下駛出10海里的速 度，向着平面洲直衝而去。Gerry負責掌舵，Colin Johnson 調帆，本來很具挑戰性的航行，平淡地過去了。這一賽程 中，船隊也發生了幾次船身橫轉。 Talking Head依然很接近我們，雖然我們用對稱風帆航行得 更深，但她用不對稱風帆仍然做出很好的VMG。 剩下的就是把帆向改到右舷上，完成環繞平面洲，總而言 之，這是JB和我在前甲板上工作量很低的一天。 非常感謝Nigel和Eric以及RO團隊的其他成員，在晴朗的一 天設置了如此出色的航線。

MACAO CUP INTERNATIONAL REGATTA 國際帆船賽澳門盃報告

In January, I received a phone call from a friend asking if I would be interested in racing on Team Canada’s entry in the first edition of the Macao Cup International Regatta.

We would be using a Beneteau 40.7, one design boat on loan from the China Cup organisers, and I immediately accepted the offer, and packed my bags for a week of sailing and racing in Macao. The racing itself was held from 10 January to 14 January, and was actually two races run concurrently, with the aforementioned Macao Cup, a one design regatta using the Beneteau 40.7’s, with 10 international teams competing from Australia, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, Japan, Phillipines, Russia, Singapore, and the U.A.E. The other race, the rather wordy, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta was for IRC boats, and had 10 teams entered from Macao, Hong Kong, and Mainland China.

The following day (Sunday), that question was answered. The winter NE monsoon filled in freshly, with gusts of 20 – 25 knots. On Team Canada’s Beneteau 40.7, the conditions began to take their toll on our ex China Cup boat.

A seized primary winch, a broken block, and a torn genoa, and it was only race one, of two. When I turned to Mike Evans our skipper and rhetorically asked "What was next?" one of the battens from the blade jib popped out and flew over our heads!

Overall, it was a fantastic four days of racing. Well organised, close racing, fantastic venue, both on and off the water.

What more could you ask for? I’m eagerly looking forward to the second edition of the Macao Cup in 2020.

Team Canada at Fisherman’s Wharf

The race HQ’s was at Fisherman's Wharf in the heart of downtown Macao adding a nice colonial backdrop to the fleet every day. With the racing held off Hac Sa Beach, in the south-east part of the territory over 10 nm away. Each day started with a 90 minute motor to the racing area. Strict local regulations meant the sails had to remain furled until out of the main channel into and out of Macao harbour.

The racing was supported by the China Cup organisers, and after racing each day there was a highlights video showing the action on the water. They really do know how to put on a show! After the prize-giving, there was just enough time to squeeze in a 90 minute run around the historic part of Macao, or along the waterfront before a nightly banquet for the sailors. The eclectic, and varied meats brought around to the tables was an absolute feast, but the highlight every night had to be the baked cinnamon encrusted pineapple!

Four days of racing were planned, with three windward and leeward days, and one island course; however, Mother Nature had other ideas in mind. After two days of relatively consistent wind, on Saturday (the island race), the wind became light, and the race committee made the appropriate decision to cancel the race, and set instead a short windward and leeward course. Even at that, the second race was shortened, and the whole day felt more like summer racing in the Typhoon Series, with big wind holes, 'gusts' of 5 – 7 knots, and generally hot and challenging conditions! Where was the winter monsoon we all asked for?

我在一月份收到朋友的電話，問我有沒有興趣，以加拿 大隊員身份，參加第一屆國際帆船賽澳門盃賽事，我們 將會借用中國盃主辦方的Beneteau 40.7一體融合設計 船隻。我馬上答應參加，收拾了一個星期航海和比賽用 的行李。比賽從一月十日到十四日舉行，同時進行兩項 賽事。第一項賽事，是使用Beneteau 40.7一體融合設 計船隻的澳門盃，共有十個國際隊伍參與，包括澳洲、 加拿大、愛沙尼亞、法國、德國、日本、菲律賓、俄羅 斯、星加坡和阿聯猶。另外一項賽事，是粵港澳大灣區 帆船賽，使用IRC船隻，參賽的包括來自澳門、香港和 中國大陸的十個團隊。 賽事總部設於澳門市中心的漁人碼頭，充滿殖民地色 彩。比賽在東南部的黑沙海灘進行，每天先要坐九十分 鐘摩托船到比賽地點。澳門相關的法則非常嚴謹，所以 我們必需把帆收起，直至船隻離開澳門海港的海峽。

賽事得到中國盃的主辦方支持，每天賽事完成，都有精 彩片段重播，展示一眾健兒海上英姿，真是精彩絕倫！ 然後就是頒獎典禮，我們在緊湊的日程中，塞進九十分 鐘的澳門舊區遊覽節目，並在海傍漫步，之後就是所有 選手獲邀參與的晚宴。美食當前，眾人大快朵頤，烤肉 桂菠蘿特別好吃！！

賽事安排了四天的競賽，三天迎風、一天背風，加上一 天圍繞小島航行。可是，大自然卻另有安排。經過了 兩天風速一致的比賽，到了星期六，本來要進行環島航 行，可是風速減弱，賽事委員會於是取消環島比賽，把 賽道改為部份迎風、部分背風。即使改變了賽道，第二 場比賽結果還是要縮短，整天的活動也彷彿變成了夏季 的颱風系列，大風道、五至七海里的疾風，和炎熱、充 滿挑戰性的比賽環境！冬季季候風到哪裡去了？ 這個問題在第二天就有答案。星期天，東北季候風 強勁，疾風高達二十至二十五海里。加拿大團隊的 Beneteau 40.7（之前在中國盃出賽的船隻）遇上很多 難題：主絞車卡住了、滑車斷裂、前帆也撕開了，當 時只是兩場比賽中的第一場。我半開玩笑問隊長Mike Evans：「接下來是什麼？」此時三角帆的吊桿聞聲而 起，飛越我們頭頂！ 總括來說，四天賽事非常精彩。組織嚴密、賽事緊湊、 陸上和海上場地都很合適，大家都心滿意足。我熱烈期 待2020年第二屆澳門盃。

Launch of XiWang ll

Following the damage to our boats when Typhoon Mangkhut struck Hong Kong last September and in particular the damage caused to one of our Hansa 303’s (crushed by a falling tree and subsequently found beyond economic repair), our thanks go to Bo Lee for arranging a fund-raising event at Kellett Island (‘Bond Night’). We would also like to thank the RHKYC Charity Foundation for making up the balance on the cost for a new Boat—XiWang ll.

XiWang ll was launched on Saturday, 16 March.

Representatives of RHKYC and their Charity Foundation joined Sailability and HHYC sailors for the event. Denis Martinet, Rear Commodore Sailing, cut the ribbon and named the boat XiWang ll, which sailed away on its first ever voyage by PUK Chi Yeung.

The launch of XiWang ll brings the total Hansa 303’s now in the Sailability fleet to 10.

TO DONATE DINGHIES AND SAILABILITY BOAT TO SUBIC SAILING

IPIC Jun Avecilla who is also Subic Sailing Club (SSC) Commodore with Subic Bay Fleet FC Zedrik Avecilla recently visited Hebe Haven Yacht Club http://www. hhyc.org.hk (HHYC) and Sailability Hong Kong Limited (SHKL) Founder/Director Mark Hutton upon introduction of Mark’s friend and a Subic Sailing School student, retired airline pilot Capt. Noel Porcuna. There they met Mike Rawbone, also a Founder and Director of SHKL and Rob Allen HHYC Sail Training Manager. Mark had been in Subic Bay two weeks before where he had seen the facilites of SSC at the Lighthouse Marina Resort, the headquarters of SSC and was convinced that they had found a safe home for their donations that could take care and put the boats into good use in their sail training program. Some of the boats of HHYC such as the lasers are club member owned which are in good condition and some are owed by the club itself that will require a little or minor repair and new sails, and safety rubber boats with fairly good working engines. SHKL is giving away a Hansa 303 boat for disabled sailors.There are also kayaks complete with paddles that could be used for coaching on the water that they will also pitch in.

In 2012, SSC has received a donation of 5 Flying Fifteen sailboats from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Flying Fifteen Association. The boats are now part of a fleet of 6 Streaker dinghies and a U28 keelboat (also donated by a local SSC mermber).

The shipment to Subic Bay of the FF15s was funded by an IYFR grant given to the Subic Bay and Cubao West Fleets.

Rob and Mike want the boats to be shipped by mid December and the shipping cost will be around US$45000 for a 40ft container, door to door. Bringing the boats over may not be a big problem but to put them in sailing shape and keep them that way would be the greater challenge. The Philippine Fleet is seeking the help of sponsors and our international fleets in its continous expansion to promote sail training to the underprivileged youth and dependents of IYFR Fleet Members so that they may be introduced to the sport of sailing and at the same time help disaled sailors to also have a feel of the enjoyment of sailing and competing in Subic Bay.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CRUISE This Chinese New Year I wet my bed, here is the story…

Stuffed and tipsy, we headed back to the boats. A party broke out on Dragonfly, but I was knackered and went to bed.

In the morning, I borrowed one of the many ‘shared’ bikes strewn everywhere and rode along the Plover Cove Reservoir seawall. Bonnie had never seen me on a bicycle and loved running next to me. Being the first day of Chinese New Year, we were greeted with “Kung Hei Fat Choi” and “Sun Sing Fai Lo”.

It was time to get back on the boat and head for Double Haven. Our destination was Sam Ah Tsuen. Dragon Fly, Alluna and PMingo had a great little sail up the Tolo Channel.

Half way up the channel is the Police Check Point, all boats must ‘check in’ when they pass, but the police waved us through without a query—we didn’t look the smuggler type.

Chinese New Year is always a quiet time for us ‘gweilos’ who stay in Hong Kong for the holidays. Our cruising friends planned a week long cruise up to Mirs Bay Double Haven to spend a week out on anchor.

‘The Chinese New Year Armada’ as we called ourselves, Ben and Lyndsey on Alluna, Ryan and Fanny on the soon to be renamed Payaaya Mingo. Andy, Devere, Will and Steve on DragonFly and myself Sean on Malarky1 with the ship’s dog Bonnie.

We departed Hebe about 11.00 am and the motor sailed us north with less than 5 knots of wind. Lucky for me the coast up around Dai Long Wan was flat with the slightest hint of a swell (I get sea sick watching Volvo Ocean Race on YouTube).

For the first night Ben and Lyndsey suggested we head up to Tai Po, Tai Mei Tuk and anchor there.

This was a great idea as we’ve always wanted to head into Tai Po, which was new territory for all of us. There is a great little anchorage right in the corner of Tai Mei Tuk just near the BBQ pits and the Tai Po Boat Club. We dropped anchor about 4.00 pm, while the boys on Dragonfly tucked into the beers. I took Bonnie ashore for a toilet break and to look around. There was a BBQ site full of folks enjoying the first day of the CNY holidays, people riding by on bicycles and young folks walking over to the youth hostel.

Bonnie loved the grassiness.

Exiting Tolo Channel we turned to port at Wong Chuk Kok Hoi on toward Double island, with a gentle northeasterly on the stern. Wing on Wing we all sailed beautifully through the narrow channel between Double Island and Cresent Island.

Dragonfly were well pleased, this being their first time ‘wing on wing’. We all had our phones out snapping pics as we cleared through Chik Mun Tau into Double Haven.

Dropping anchor in Sam Ah Tsuen an hour later, the boys on DragonFly tucked into the beers while I took Bonnie ashore to look for a suitable site for the evening’s beach BBQ. Stepping ashore I was greeted by a large AFCD sign stating ‘NO FUN’ (no fires, no BBQ), since Sam Ah Tsuen is part of the ‘Marine Park’. We really wanted to have a nice beach BBQ. Back on Alluna we looked over the charts searching for a suitable beach within striking range. Ben had earlier suggested Camp Cove, the chart showed a beach and a decent anchorage. We pulled anchor and bid Sam Ah Tsuen

farewell. Nice place but it looks nothing like the photos you see in the tourist guides, and no fires was a deal breaker for this crew of misfits looking to let loose on a beach.

Dropping anchor in Camp Cove, 45 minutes later, we all smiled at the nice looking sandy beach before us. Smiles were soon lost as Ben and Lyndey went ashore and got mugged by sandflies, dammit! We then ventured about 300 metres down the shore to another beach that looked suitable. It was strewn with firewood and no sand flies. We soon had a roaring fire lit with a separate ‘cooking fire’ manned by Will. Thanks Will for your great cooking. Thus ensued an epic night gathered around a fire on a remote beach, not another soul in sight, good wine, good food and a nice little sing along. We polished off a few good bottles.

That evening we ventured across the road to survey the many restaurants along Ting Kok Road, after checking out the menus and prices, Ben got into a little negotiation with the manager of Tulsi Indian Restaurant. The restaurant manager said, “Bucket of Kingfisher, 5 bottles $150.” Ben replied, “7 bottles for $150 and we will order a lot of food.

10 very hungry sailors await.” The manager then said, “Ok ok.” We all took our seats and began to order a veritable feast. The bill came to roughly $150 per head and the food was most excellent. I highly recommend it.

That night the after party was on Malarky where we proceeded to get tucked into the bottle of Baileys I had brought. We finished the rum, then the vodka and the tequila.

Next morning, I dove into the clear turquoise water to wash away my hangover. The water in Double Haven is so clear, you can see all the way to the bottom.

Later that afternoon Ben, Lyndsey and myself felt like a walk, ‘lets go check out the pagoda on the hill above our bay’. Only we found the trail to Cat O village on the other side of the island and our little walk turned into a threehour adventure.

20 years ago, there were 6000+ people living on Cat O, now only about 250 mostly older folks who refused to leave for the ‘big city’ remained. The village was deserted, but we did meet Peter; a real character. He told us that everyone had left the island to look for work and the place was crumbling and derelict. He told us about the 5 view points on the island.

Our plan was to spend one night in Camp Cove then another night anchored off Cat O village but after our walk we decided to spend another night in Camp Cove.

P-Mingo and DragonFly had departed earlier that morning, they were only able to stay two nights, but Malarky and Alluna were in for the long haul.

Next day I pulled the anchor early and motored around the corner to Cat O. I wanted to get some decent drone shots of the village with Yan Tien in the background. It was now the last day of Chinese New Year and the tourists were out in full force, the village was full of day trippers enjoying seafood lunches and buying chilli oil and dried fish.

We hiked up to the pagoda above Cat O, view point #3 according to Peter. Cat O is directly across the water from Yan Tien Harbor, China’s busiest container port.

Quite a sight seeing this crumbling old fishing village with the massive modern container ships and cranes in the background. I flew the drone and got some great shots.

Then it was time to head towards home. We planned to spend our last night in Long Harbour anchored off Wong Shek Pier.

About half way across the bay to Hoi Ha Wan, Malarky broke the bolts holding the shaft onto the gearbox. “Pan Pan Pan, this is Malarky I’m gonna need a tow” Getting towed back to Wong Shek, I was somewhat dismayed, I’d just put a new gearbox and pressure plate in Malarky, obviously something was still not aligned quite right.

春節遊

今年春節，我弄濕了床。以下是我的故事……

Luckily it was only the bolts that broke, so the next day I hopped in a taxi and headed back to Hebe where Peter H. had some replacements waiting for me. Twenty minutes in the engine room with Ben and we were ready to go.

Up until this point we’d had glorious weather, it had been warm and sunny everyday, shorts weather, little wind and calm seas. That all changed Friday morning as we prepared to sail home past Dai Long Wan. As we cleared the channel at Grass Island the first swell slammed into Malarky. I went below got into my foulies and put on my PDF; what I didn’t do was latch the forward hatch; big mistake. With main and mizzen we beat to wind. I didn’t want to run the engine in case the alignment caused another failure, and with 20+ knots of wind it would have been a sin not to sail. Crashing forward, each swell getting bigger and bigger we rounded Bate’s head and got into the full force of the stiff Easterly. Now on a broad reach Malarky’s mizzen blew out. The clew let go and the sail ripped along the foot, I quickly dropped it. I was thinking to hoist my nice little ‘storm jib’ but there was no way I was going on the foredeck in pitching 2 metre seas. We didn’t need it, we were making 6 knots with just Malarky’s main.

The next 2 hours were the worst sailing conditions I’d ever done solo. Huge waves, howling winds and a dog that just wanted it all to stop. I did not get sick, I could not.

Arriving back at Hebe a few hours later I went below to find my V-berth bed was soaked, I’d forgotten to latch the hatch.

That night, my lovely girlfriend Wemmy and I celebrated our first night of the New Year together at the self serve laundromat in Sai Kung town washing all the bedding.

對於留在香港過年的「鬼佬」來說，農曆新年總是靜悄悄 的 。一眾好友於是計劃了一個星期的行程，出海來到大 鵬灣印洲塘，共度安靜時光。 Ben 和 Lyndsey 乘坐 Alluna、Ryan 和 Fanny 乘坐即將 改名的 Payaaya Mingo、Andy、Devere、Will 和 Steve 乘坐DragonFly，加上我 Sean 和護船犬 Bonnie，乘坐 Malarky1，浩浩蕩蕩出發。 我們早上約十一時離開白沙灣，向北邊乘風而去，風速少 於五海里。非常幸運，大浪灣一帶沿海風平浪靜。我在 YouTube 上看 Volvo Ocean Race 也會暈浪呢！ 第一晚 Ben 和 Lyndsey 建議去大埔、大尾篤，然後下 錨。這主意太棒了，因為我們一直想去大埔看看。大尾篤 角落接近燒烤場和大埔遊艇會，正好有一個下錨點。我們 下午四點左右下錨，DragonFly 上的男士們開懷暢飲啤酒 之際，我帶著 Bonnie 上岸方便，順便到處瀏覽。大年初 一，好多人聚集燒烤場享受假日，也有一些人在附近騎單 車，一群年輕人正邁步走向青年旅舍。Bonnie 看到大草 地，高興得很。 當晚我們沿著汀角路尋找地方吃晚餐， 比較過菜式和價 錢後，Ben 跟 Tulsi 印度餐廳的經理討價還價。經理說： 「5瓶Kingfisher啤酒，$150！」Ben還價：「7瓶$150！ 我們還要叫好多食物。這裡有十個非常餓的水手！」經理 說：「好吧！」我們馬上坐下，叫了一檯美食。最後埋 單，每人大概$150，超值又美味，值得大力推介！

離開吐露海峽，我們經過黃竹角海，向往灣洲駛去，船尾 迎著柔和的東北風。我們船貼船的穿過往灣洲和峨眉洲海 峽。Dragon Fly第一次這樣航行，船員顯得特別興奮。來 到直門頭，大家紛紛拿出手機拍照。 一個小時後，我們在三椏村下錨，DragonFly男生開始喝啤 酒，我帶著Bonnie上岸，尋找合適地點，在沙灘上燒烤。 可是來到岸上，卻看見漁護處的告示牌：「不得生火。不 准燒烤。」換言之，不准玩樂！因為三椏村屬於海岸公園 範圍。 返回Alluna，我們研究地圖，尋找合適的燒烤地點。Ben建 議到白沙頭灣，地圖顯示附近有海灘和下錨點。我們於是 和三椏村說再見，這裡的確不錯，但是和旅遊指南裡面的 資料相比，還是相差很遠。對於我們這群喜歡在沙灘玩樂 的人來說，不能生火實在太煞風景。 四十五分鐘之後，我們在白沙頭灣下錨，看著面前的沙 灘，不禁微笑。可惜笑不了多久，Ben 和 Lyndsey 被沙蝨 咬得厲害，我們於是沿岸走了三百米，找到另外一個合適 的沙灘。這裡遍地木材，而且沒有沙蝨。我們迅即生火取 暖，另外Will負責看管「煮食火」，感謝 Will 為大家炮製 美食。當晚大家圍著火堆，四周渺無人煙，大家共享美食 醇酒，唱歌助興，樂而忘返。 當晚稍後的派對在 Malarky 舉行，我拿出帶來的 Baileys， 供大家享用。之後我們再幹掉冧酒、伏特加和龍舌蘭酒。 第二天早上，我跳進清澈見底的海水，洗掉宿醉。印洲塘 的水質一流，可以清晰看到水底。

然後，就是啟程回家的時間。我們在黃石碼頭對出海上下 錨，打算當晚在大灘海渡過。

踏完單車，是時候回到船上，向印洲塘進發。我們的目的 地是三椏村，DragonFly、Alluna和P-Mingo沿著吐露海峽 乘風而上，中途本來有一個海警站，所有船隻需要停下來 接受檢查，不過當日警員讓我們直接通過，大概一看就知 道我們不是走私販子。

往海下灣途中，Malarky 齒輪箱固定軸的螺栓斷 了，Malarky 需要給拖進港口。我看著船給拖回黃石，心 裏滿不是味兒。我最近才為 Malarky 換了新的齒輪箱和壓 版，好明顯有些東西沒有裝置好。 幸好，只是斷了螺栓。第二天我跳上的士，返回白沙 灣。Peter H 為我準備了替換的零件。我和Ben在機艙待了 二十分鐘，船隻再次準備就緒，重新出發。 之前天氣一直非常好，每天風和日麗，海面一片平靜。到 了星期五早上，我們正準備經過大浪灣回航時，天氣突然 轉壞。我們經過塔門海峽時，第一波巨浪向 Malarky 撞 來。我到船下面穿好風雨裝和 PFD，不過我犯了嚴重的錯 誤，就是沒有閂好前艙。我們在大風中搖晃，我不想啟動 引擎，害怕導致其他機件故障。當時二十海里的風速，不 啟航真是罪過。我們迎著一波又一波的巨浪，強勁的東風 不斷打擊船身。Malarky 的後桅被吹斷，帆耳鬆掉，帆從 底部撕開。我馬上落帆，本來想升起「風暴帆」，可是看 到兩米高的大浪，我放棄了走向前甲板。其實我們根本不 需要任何帆，也以六海里的速度前進。接下來的兩小時， 是我獨自航海經歷中最糟糕的時刻。巨浪滔天、寒風刺 骨，還有一隻飽受驚嚇的狗狗。我沒有暈船，因為我必須 堅持下去。 數小時後，我返回白沙灣。我到船身下面，發現我的床濕 透了，因為我忘記閂好前艙。當晚，我和女友Wemmy在西 貢市的自助洗衣店，一邊清洗床單，一邊慶祝農曆新年。 如果你沒有到過印洲塘、吉澳和附近一帶，你還不馬上行 動？夏天我們肯定要再回去，到時歡迎大家同行。謹記閂 好前艙，不要弄濕了床就好。 船長 McBlinky 報告完畢！

到了下午，Ben、Lyndsey 和我想去散步，到海灣上方的 山上看看涼亭。結果發現小島的另一邊，有小路直達吉澳 村，散步就演變成三小時的探險。 20年前，吉澳村有約6000名居民，現在，只剩下大概250 名拒絕搬遷到大城市的老人家。村落大部份已經荒廢，不 過我們遇上一個人物—Peter。他告訴我們，所有人早已離 開了小島，去尋找工作，島上到處頹垣敗瓦。他指點我們 島上五個看風景的地點。

大家吃得肚滿腸肥，喝得醉醺醺，列隊返回船上。大家在 Dragonfly 開派對，我則因為太累，直接上床睡覺。

我們計劃在白沙頭灣渡過一晚，然後到吉澳村下錨過夜。 不過，散步之後，我們決定在白沙頭灣再待一晚。PMingo和DragonFly 當日早上已經離開，他們只能待兩個晚 上。不過，Malarky和Alluna則可以久留。第二天，我一早 起錨，拐彎往吉澳。我想用無人機拍攝鹽田作為背景的吉 澳村落。當日是農曆新年假期最後一天，遊客處處。村裡 面盡是即日的旅客，享用海鮮午餐，選購辣椒油和鹹魚。

早上我借用了一部隨意放置的單車，沿著船灣淡水湖海 堤探索，Bonnie第一次見到我踏單車，很高興地在旁邊 奔跑。因為是春節的緣故，沿途好多人跟我們説「恭喜發 財」、「新春快樂」。

我們徒步走上吉澳山上的涼亭，也就是 Peter 說的觀景點 三號。吉澳就在鹽田港的對岸，鹽田是中國最繁忙的貨櫃 港口。這個破舊的小漁村，背景是現代的貨櫃船和吊機， 真是令人大開眼界。我派出無人機，拍了不少照片。

Marina pile extensions Following the completion of the official tender process, work is soon to commence on the marina piles. This work will involve ascertaining the existing condition of the marina piles together with ensuring compliance of all components of the marina with government regulations. Work will also analyse predicted tide heights to work out a safe and cost-effective solution to ensure the piles and the entire marina system are strong enough and high enough while being compliant with government regulations.

If all existing marina components are compliant, we can proceed with the pile extensions. If anything is not compliant we will need to rectify any defects and get these approved by the Government before we can proceed with any pile extension work.

Once everything has been deemed compliant and we have the Occupation Permit issued by the Government for the marina—this would mean the Building Authority would then be satisfied that the building had been constructed in accordance with the Buildings Ordinance (Cap. 123), and then one of two solutions will be rolled out: 1. The existing piles are extended, within their current loading capacity, to give sufficient additional height to prevent ‘overtopping’ and avoid the resultant catastrophic event of the pontoons and boats completely coming off the piles during storm surges.

2. If the existing piles are determined not to be structurally strong enough to support this proposed height extension, then they will be completely replaced with new stronger piles.

As part of this process, we are also getting an objective clarification of the exact windage and load capabilities of the existing marina.

Essential Works Plan We have met with the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) about our plans for the Club, and they have subsequently requested further information such as an activities plan and corresponding financial data. We are currently collating this data and will compile presentation materials for submission to HAB. The primary focus for the HAB Essential Works Plan will be on building a club annex, a permanent venue for the Sail Training Centre, and additional boat racks.

The Planning and Works Committee has been beavering away to get multiple club facility renovation/enhancement projects off the ground. Here is a summary of where we’re currently up to and some of the work you will soon see going on at the Club to repair and enhance facilities.

Fire safety office and garden bar We have already issued a Request For Proposal to fire safety engineers to help further enhance fire safety issues in the office block and garden bar areas. Watch this space.

General utility survey We are currently drafting the scope of work for a survey of all existing underground utilities at the Club. Sea wall repairs As anyone walking through the boatyard would have seen, the sea walls took a severe battering in the last typhoon season. And while they have been patched up, they are still in urgent need of more permanent repairs. This will involve a complete rebuild of the seawall around the slipway area (near the old fireboat winch). Stage one of this project will involve Ground Investigation (GI) works to analyse the condition of the ground in preparation for reconstructing the sea wall.

To you and I, this means drilling holes in the ground around the sea wall area.

We have instructed, and will work closely with, the consultant engineer to help minimise the impact this has on club members and such works will only be carried out from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on weekdays. So please bear with us while we make our club facilities better and safer in this regard.

Club insurance As a further precaution, as we will have multiple works projects occurring at different stages throughout the Club, we want to ensure that we have sufficient insurance coverage should consultants/contractors have any accidents that affect club property or members (and should they be found to have insufficient/inadequate insurance themselves).

Lift This is a slow-burn, long-term project which may require an amendment to our lease. If we are lucky and the lift footprint falls within our existing allowable ‘covered area’, then we can proceed to the next stage. If, however, it is deemed to not fall within this area, and requires lease modification—then this will take a couple of years to obtain before we can proceed to the next stage. The next stage will then involve ensuring we have fire safety compliance before we can finally proceed with construction. In any event, we continue to work towards getting a lift installed to facilitate better disabled-access and also to help staff transfer heavy items (like beer kegs) up to the upstairs restaurant. We are currently working with the Authorized Person already familiar with this project in this regard.

Honourable mentions also for the recipients of acknowledgements from the Sailing Committee : Sandra Snell (formerly of Minnie the Moocher) for her Pacific leg of the Clipper Race and commitment to HHYC racing generally; Graham Young (Bits and Pieces) who has guided the crew through difficult times in 2018 and also passed on his expansive sailing knowledge to other skippers and crews; Yacht Outrageous for ‘good attendance’ at 33 of 37 races and for heading up the IRC rankings in the Boat of the Year final table; and SMS Boat Hotwired for a total of 16 podium places in possible 37 races.

The Sailor of the Year process benefitted from nominations from the HHYC sailors, which gave the Sailing Committee a few more names to the sailors under consideration. A shortlist of five HHYC members was derived and the winner determined by each of the nine Committee members independently ranking their preferences in order; the winner being the sailor with the least points. The full short-list was as follows: Sunny Lo (winner); Sandra Snell (see above); Kay Patterson (Bits & Pieces); Jimmy Lau (Lazy Piggy); and Frank Fan (Jelik and UK Sails).

A special recognition award was also given to Lesley Anderson for outstanding service and support to HHYC for over 40 years. In particular, I wish to add my thanks to Lesley for her on-going long membership of the Sailing Committee and for dedication in supporting sailing at every level in the Club.

I am very pleased to be able to start this piece with a report on the Sailors’ Awards Night, which was held on Friday, 22 March 2019. For the first time, this event was combined with the new members evening and a presentation to 25-year members and a few awards to recognise the contribution to the Club of a number of individuals. It was a fantastic evening attended by over 200 people, with the family and friends of the dinghy sailors contributing a huge contingent. The master of ceremonies for the evening was Rob Allen, Sail Training Manager, who did a brilliant job of keeping the event under control, both time and noise-wise!! Rob was ably supported by DJ Kevin Lewis who added to the entertainment throughout the event.

Looking ahead on the Sailing front; sailors may have noted that the Mirs Bay weekend has been brought forward to 23/24 June 2019 which is early in the Typhoon Series compared to previous years. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, the wind is usually better in June than in July and, secondly, we hope to attract more boats to sail up to Mirs Bay, anchor over-night and then take part in the Return Pursuit Race. This date advancement is intended as a trial, so may be reconsidered for 2020 depending on the success or otherwise of the experiment.

In this regard, the Sailing Committee has agreed to implement a Mirs Bay Regatta. This will be an event for HKPN boats and will be overlaid on the existing format of the Passage Race on Saturday and Pursuit Race on Sunday.

The Countess Cup will be awarded to the overall winner of the two races.

More details on that in the next edition of Hebe Jebes.

After the typhoon last year, we must re-estimate the impact that future typhoons may cause. The Club is now evaluating the bearing capacity of the pontoon, and considering how to heighten and consolidate the pontoon to ensure greater wind resistance in the future. In addition to the consolidation of the pontoon, we will also inspect the ropes and moorings and see if there are any replacements that are required. I hope that everyone will pay attention to and comply with the regulations when using the facilities, so the facilities are not overloaded, which would affect the safety of you or any other members, or your rights of using the facilities.

The facility charges for the coming year have been reviewed and adjusted.

I hope that the adjustment will not cause too much inconvenience to everyone and hope it helps with improving the Club facilities and maintenance expenses.
