Christina Weemaes-Lidman and guests—NYE Countdown Party Jelik 7 at Kowloon Cup
I am regularly reminded of the metaphor of the three-legged stool The three legs at the Club are the members, the staff, and the facilities. If we fail to manage just one of these legs then we fail in all three.
The last four years have been fraught with uncertainty and we have paid the price in a reduced cash flow. Steering the Club back on track financially has required considerable effort. There are signs that in the last month or so the Club has turned the corner following the relaxation of pandemic restrictions and the dropping of the mask mandate.
The Club is much more active on all fronts whether it be yacht racing, sailing development, infrastructure development, entertainment or membership development. (The downward trend for members is reversing and the Club is attracting many who are interested in the sports on offer as well as redressing the imbalance in ages.)
The coming six months is chock full of events and it is great to see the committees and the staff working together to make these events happen. The Chinese New Year Lion Dance was over-subscribed (with some extremely acrobatic lions) as was the long-awaited new members’ cocktail party coupled with awards recognising long serving members. After this I decided to put a table together for the Burns Night supper and it was a fantastic evening – to their credit the staff did not miss a beat! These three events bode well for the future and I am feeling extremely optimistic.
The big issues lurking in the background are the lease modification due in 2025, the renewal of the private recreational lease due in 2027. More imminent is the Budget for Financial Year Ending (FYE) 2024. So, it seems that a few words on these are warranted.
Renewal of the Private Recreational Lease.
The metaphor of the three-legged stool applies here as well. There are three categories that the Cultural, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CSTB) looks at – regularity compliance, liquidity, and “opening up” to Eligible Outside Bodies (EOB). Renewal can take years (in fact, experience suggests between six and nine years) and the outcome should not be taken lightly.
We are slowly but surely working towards regulatory compliance for staff accommodation and remedying other minor matters.
Liquidity means having the cash to meet commitments. The big unknown is the size of the Waiver Fee for the new lease; and the CSTB has offered to give a non-binding indication in 2023. Because of this unknown and the uncertainty surrounding renewal we need to generate more cash and then preserve it. Therefore, until there is clarity there should be no major development expenditure.
“Opening up” is a complex and evolving experience. There is a popular perception that opening up simply means letting members of the public use the Club’s facilities; when it actually means allowing EOBs (who might otherwise strain the Government’s resources) use the Club. There are complex definitions and detailed calculations which determine whether the Club will meet the criteria for renewing the lease.
Budget FYE 2024
We are nearing the end of the budget preparation for FYE 2024. The goal is to ensure the Development Capital Expenditure is minimal and that there is Capital Expenditure to maintain the operations as a going concern; and this constitutes the minimum cash from operations. The indications are that either fees for services increase or capital expenditure reduces—we will need to wait and see.
Enjoy your mask-free Club again!

SONNY PAYNE Vice Commodore
The composition of the Planning and Works Committee (PWC) for 2023 was formally approved by the General Committee at its first meeting of 2023 and I am pleased to report that the PWC for 2023 comprises Inge Strompf-Jepsen, Chris Tidball, Mark Ashton, Frances Hurley along with myself as chair.
Inge and Chris have been instrumental in overseeing the design and implementation of the washroom refurbishment and the boat rack safety walkway projects over the past year and, going forward, their input on the Regatta Deck project is already proving to be invaluable. I am very grateful to them for agreeing to continue to serve on the PWC.
I am also very grateful that Mark and Frances—who many of you will already know— have agreed to join the PWC. Mark is a former commodore of the Club and the current Club Historian, as well as being an accomplished engineer and former general manager of Leighton Contractors in Hong Kong, and brings a wealth of knowledge and capability to the PWC. Frances is a current member of the General Committee and, as chair of the 24-Hour Race Committee, has overseen the implementation of two 24-Hour Charity Dinghy Race events over the past 2 years under very challenging conditions.
The conceptual design for the Regatta Deck (to support the lease modification application) and the existing marina piles are the main projects with which the PWC is currently dealing with. With regards to the Regatta Deck, the PWC resolved to press ahead with exploring a one-storey option and a two-storey option and to present these two options to members (through a Members Forum) once the architect (Matter) has developed a concept design for both, an estimate of construction cost and time line this can then be presented to members.
For the marina piles, the PWC has resolved to conduct a further risk analysis in light of the new design “extreme sea levels” set out in a recent amendment to the Port Works Design Manual—the primary code governing the design of marine structures in Hong Kong—before committing the Club to replacing the piles, which would be a substantial cost. I hope to be in a position to report on the conclusions of this risk analysis in my next report.
我也非常感謝Mark和Frances(很多人應該已經知道)同意加入PWC。

PAUL C. ARKWRIGHT General Manager
Return to Hebe
It’s been heart-warming to see the start of the—albeit gradual—return to Hong Kong; with a slow but steady influx of both new members and some familiar far-too-longunseen friends returning to Hebe after we emerge from our COVID hibernation. The new member’s cocktail party on Friday 13 January proved to be a great success, this time combined with a much-needed catch-up on saying thank you and kudos to some of our longest-serving members on the same evening.
Magic in the mist
The Garden Bar was transformed into a beautiful engagement venue for David Choeng’s son and future daughter-in-law. Even the foggy, misty weather didn’t dampen spirits on that day and the F&B team had done an amazing job to make the place look magical. We could hear the tunes and laughter right from the fairway buoys as we made our way back to Hebe after day one of the Big Boat Monsoon Spring Cup 2023 which was held in Shelter Cove. The Spring Cup wasn’t so lucky on Sunday, as the fog continued to roll in, with the AP over H hoisted in the morning, and the race having to be abandoned later in the day.
Further greening Hebe
You might notice a few new planters around the General Office, which is the start of our herb garden, so we can grow our own herbs and use them in some specially prepared wholly-locally sourced dishes. This not only allows us to make the local pasture-to-plate dishes a reality (well local plant pots at least) to bring you super fresh produce, but it also helps us to further reduce our carbon footprint a bit by minimising the distances that food travels to reach the restaurant. Speaking of fresh, in case you didn’t notice your salad just got a whole lot crunchier and even cleaner as we switched over to hydroponic lettuces that are grown locally and healthier and greener as they are entirely organic and never exposed to any pesticides or chemicals.
Once we’ve used up our current stock of sugar sachets (there are a fair few to go yet), we will switch to sugar cubes in little pots—with sugar tongs for hygiene. This allows us to reduce unnecessary packaging waste.
The ESG Committee continues to work hand-in-hand with Marine Operations to look at converting our sampans to electric ones.
All these little steps over time continue to help lead the club in a greener and fresher direction.
Staff Annual Dinner
As a thank you to all our hardworking staff we have scheduled the Staff Annual Dinner on 28 February for all staff, with cover security staff on-site at all times.
Have a brilliant Easter, looking forward to seeing you all at the Club soon and hosting a shedload of fun member events throughout the year.

KOWLOON CUP
With the winter monsoon affecting coastal areas of southern China, sailors were looking forward to a challenging islands course on Day 1 of the Kowloon Cup 2023. On the dock, aboard the committee boat, Hebe One, race officer Simon Jones and his assistants discussed wind readings sent in by the club’s reconnaissance team and considered various course options, including a geometric, if there was a risk of the wind dying later in the afternoon.
From the club, a bank of fog could be seen covering the entrance to Hebe Haven. Would this ‘burn off’ by the scheduled 1400 start?
As Hebe One sailed out into Port Shelter on Saturday, 14 January, there were genuine safety concerns as visibility was down to about 30 yards. Nevertheless, the sky above was blue so management was confident that conditions would improve. But, they didn’t and, at 1330, the AP flag was raised on the committee boat.
An hour later, with visibility improving, the RO announced Course 32 for all boats and began the countdown at 1430. At 1440, a fleet of 21 boats sailed away in just over 4 knots of northwesterly breeze, Talkinghead and Outrageous in the lead.
The course would take in a club mark, then a Port Shelter Mark laid in open water, then a port rounding of Trio Island, a starboard rounding of Table Island, a Cascade Bay Mark and finally a finish off Little Palm Beach. Covering 11 nautical miles, the RO calculated that most would be home by 1700. Turned out he was right.
But not before he decided to shorten course. Progress had been slow and a finish at Table Island made a lot of sense. So, Hebe One dropped anchor and it wasn’t long before the front runners were approaching the line under kite.

Now this is where it gets interesting. Talkinghead and Minnie the Moocher both crossed at 16:06:21 but, the RO declared, Minnie was inches ahead and, thus, line honours went to Bridget Chan and crew. But Joe Leung and crew can be pleased that Talkinghead placed 2nd on handicap, ahead of Minnie and behind consistent performer, No One Else
In 4th place came Goddess with Maiyo Hood at the helm, and in 5th, the seniors on X-Terminator with Juliet Ashton calling the shots. Orca this time put in a controlled performance with Mark Houghton advising and Andrea Sangiorgi driving the big Hanse to a improved 8th place.
Last boat home was Coral Harbour at 16:56:56 while four boats – Saphira, Happy King, Scrumpy and Modesty Blaise – retired.
The forecast for Sunday, 15 January 2023, was Force 4 and even Force 6 at times, with the arrival of a cold front and temperatures as low as 11 degrees. The difference on Day 2 of the Kowloon Cup 2023 was that racing would be in ‘pursuit’ format. The course would take the 21 boats through Rocky Harbour to a ‘sausage course’ and, following as many laps as possible before a 1400 cut-off, a dash to the Yau Ley Seafood Restaurant for a prize-giving, all under the watchful eye of David Rule (aka Cabbage).
First away at 0956, in 5 knots of breeze, was Modesty Blaise, next Scrumpy, then Coral Harbour and, at 1022, Cynthia Law’s RB
At midday, things began to change. The temperature dropped and winds rose to 15 knots, with gusts of 23. Wild conditions for those doing their ‘sausages’ with the time limit fast approaching!
The finishing order for the second day of the Kowloon Cup 2023 was much changed. In 1st place came Orca, with the crew of Bits & Pieces on board and a confident Italian owner at the helm. Outrageous, with Collin Johnson at the helm and club General Manager, Paul Arkwright on main, placed 2nd, Manbude (ex-Kingsman) took 3rd with No One Else in 4th.
Regular high achievers took a beating, though. Talkinghead finished 7th, X-Terminator 10th, Minnie the Moocher 15th and Ichiban second to last. Saphira, again, retired.
The prize-giving at the famed Yau Ley Seafood Restaurant started at 1530. Overall winner of the two days’ racing was No One Else. Older readers will remember that No One Else also claimed overall victory in the Kowloon Cup 2020. Bottles of wine and calendars were awarded and Yau Ley restaurant issued vouchers to 1st, 2nd (Orca) and 3rd (Talkinghead ) places. Soon after 1600, with the cold beginning to bite, crews headed back to their boats and thus ended an enjoyable Kowloon Cup 2023. No One Else overall Winner Kowloon Cup 2023

A CRAZY COVID YEAR OF SAILING AKA MEETING HHYC MEMBERS ABROAD (PART 2)
Continued from last issue……
Following our adventures detailled in the previous issue of Hebe Jebes, six weeks of hard work followed for us, before we were re-launched and fit to resume our sailing.
Scrubbing, replacing upholstery, servicing equipment and simply throwing a lot of stuff out. We missed our Christmas deadline, but were in time for our daughter Bonnie’s visit in Mid January and set off to explore the fantastic coastal scenery and beaches of Langkawi. It also became clear that all of Langkawi had suffered badly from the long period of isolation with severely restricted income for the small businesses. Hotels, restaurants and related services were all struggling to get back on their feet. The beaches and waterfalls we visited on this trip were virtually empty and only rarely did we see another yacht sailing. We sailed around the Langkawi archipelago, visiting the Marine Park of Palau Payer and saw Whale Sharks feeding in the plastic detritus laden water. Our favorites were the Eagle feeding anchorage at Tanjung Rhu and the dinghy trip from there through the maze of waterways which link through to Hole in the Wall. En route, we paddled in silence through the Crocodile Cave, but fortunately it was only only Bats and Swallows in residence.
Our theme of meeting Hebe members on our travels continued with the arrival from Hong Kong of Andy Kellow (Dragon Marine) who was berthed next door. ATÉ, and Andy and Kylie’s boat Ikaroa making up the HHYC Cruising Division in this part of the world! With such an eventful period there was a lot of Hong Kong news to catch up with. In our travels we were always being asked “What’s happening to Hong Kong Kong ?” as the picture in the international news was pretty bleak.
Our three-month visa for Malaysia was soon up and as we had hoped, Australia was finally coming to terms with Covid. We left for Sydney in early April and thanks again to the Hebe connection, we were soon hooked up to racing a Sydney 38 at Pittwater and a TP52 on Sydney Harbor with Past Commodore Peter Weiley.
Wait, but what about the new baby?
The focus of this article is a crazy year of sailing, so I won’t divert to family matters, except to include two photos of our son Rory, one 'driving' a Club sampan in his Clearwater Bay school uniform, under the watchful eye of the driver and the second with Marloe, a baby daughter of his own. As you can see, HHYC has been part of our lives for a very long time!
With a very rainy Autumn in Australia now moving into winter and Hong Kong still clinging on to its three-week hotel quarantine, it was again the time of year to head back to UK waters and that ancient trimaran for the summer. We did this via a three-week stopover in Langkawi where Hebe GenCom member Kay Patterson joined us for another circumnavigation of the islands, this time sailing in the SW season. The SW season proved to be better than we expected with short duration rain showers bringing a welcome cooling effect and mostly sunny conditions. We visited different anchorages in this season and found many new gems.

We lifted ATÉ onto a slot on the Rebak hardstand at the end of June, this time we hope for a much shorter break until our next visit! The UK turned on for a lovely Summer in ‘22 with easterly breezes and a mini heatwave. Travel restrictions had been dropped completely and It was delightful to be out of the all pervasive grip of Covid, like taking off a heavy rucksack after a long walk.
A highlight for us was a cruise to Normandy to see the beautiful French countryside and harbour towns. St. Vaast, Bayeux and Honfleur being our favorites. The tidal cycle rules all on this coast, due to powerful streams and the fact that many of the harbours are locked a few hours either side of HW. This calls for careful passage planning at all times. Sailing is popular in France and we found the customs procedures simple (in spite of Brexit) and prices for berthing is low by UK standards. Our passage back to Poole from Le Havre on the Seine River was just in time to beat a weather change back to the more seasonal rough weather and as it was we had the rail pressed to keep speed ahead of the predicted shift to head winds. The Channel was busy with shipping which kept us alert, but navigation was simplified by the fact that we could see the lights on the huge TV ariels on the Isle of Wight from just off the French coast.
Back in the UK in late September, good news finally arrived from Hong Kong in the shape of what is known here as “0+3”, just in time for the 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race. This was our green light to get back to our home after 15 largely unplanned months. We arrived in time to rejoin Bob and Lesley on the X99 XTerminator for the Port Shelter Regatta, on a beautiful weekend of sunshine and nice breeze.
A better welcome we couldn't have imagined and it was lovely to be sailing again in home waters and amongst a fleet of friends!

With the Festive seasons of Christmas and New Year and the year of the Tiger, well behind us, it’s time to look ahead for the Spring series and the business of bringing our boats up to specification for another busy season of sailing.
2023 brings in the year of the Rabbit and more specifically, the Water Rabbit, so its incumbent on the sailors amongst us to heed some of the protocols that this water zodiac might bring. Rabbits need a strong social net and a reliable but solid circle of friends, friends good enough to proffer up sound advice and tactics. Might this mean addressing our racing with greater gusto than the Tiger offered? Better strategies at the start line and in our respective classes and maybe greater efforts to get both our newer members and youth sailors into Race management? This will also be the time to clean those winter hulls, cut and polish the topsides and even a thorough check of all the shackles, pins and blocks. Halyards to renew, winches to service and sheets to replace?
On the cruising side, the CSOH have been an active mob, with a Boxing Day sail out to Yau Ley. To say this was a "tribal" event is rather an understatement with crews of a dozen boats, GPS marker clues, signature songs and fender dressing, the day was a total blast. Crews wore pyjamas,( thank you to Harvey and mob), to Santa outfits and of course the inimitable Santa hat, that like the Rabbit in our new Zodiac, appeared to replicate all over Yau Ley's festive tables. The grog flowed and it’s true to say, the flag of the 193 is definitely gaining traction for the year ahead.
Depending on where your boat is berthed will pretty much dictate the amount of foul on your hull. In the Hebe basin, there are three predominant areas that marine bio mass tends to propagate:
1. East of the Southerly Cardinal Buoy
2. The HHYC Marina
3. South of the South Dock to the PSW Public Pier.
All three areas are common to what I call, the "significant two". Tube Worms, (Hydroides elegans) and the Acorn Barnacle, (Balanus glandula). Barnacles and worms constitute the mainstream of most of the fouling we see at Hebe and in area 1, both species are prolific. The land water run-off in the rainy season and the location of the neck towards Trio, creates an almost perfect water mass for these two species to do the most damage to our hulls. The key to trigger the free floating larvae that represent the barnacle and the tube worm, are the bacterial layers that build up on the hull, often seen as a green slime just below the water line. Much like land fertilisers, nitrate run off into a febrile marine environment, encourages a bedding layer on solid surfaces that larval stages of oysters, barnacles and tube worms can adhere to. Interestingly, Nam Wat was at one time an area of intense oyster farming, indicating how fertile the shallow water sand beds are to Hebe Haven. This of course is little help to the business of stretching our antifoul windows but none the less, remains a barometer to the water quality index.

A misnomer, is believing tube worms and barnacles are molluscs. They are not. The Acorn Barnacle is a type of shrimp that in the post larval stage, once its decided to adhere to your lovely clean, though slightly grimy spade rudder, locks its head onto the surface of choice and begins the process of settling in. This rather sardonic green slime needs attention as soon as you notice it. The trouble is once you or the appointed cleaner, ashore or submerged, wipes the hull back to anti foul , you will remove a thin layer of this paint and thus remove a percentage of its efficacy to address the whole matter of preventing foul build up. However, if the immediate post larval stage has been reached then the sticky head of the barnacle and its soft casing shell, will likely be removed. For the Tube Worm, matters are a little different. The mineral tubes that each worm, or more accurately, a bristle worm creates, can often be found in sea cock outlets, vents, teeth gearings of props and bearings. They are difficult to clear until they have reached considerable mass. Propeller blades can often encourage, (through sitting on swing moorings for over a year), massive colonies of these worms rendering the whole propeller utterly useless. Their calcium tubes, though easy to remove off smooth surfaces provide a marine bio infrastructure in itself. Whole colonies of shrimp. crabs and demersal fish will thrive once the worm has established itself and other than a sharp scrapper, there are few predators that threaten it. Some species of Wrasse will feed on the fleshy protrusions and bristles of the worms but this is a canny Polychaeta and once alerted, rapidly returns to its calcified tunnel and ultimately, protection.
The Acorn Barnacle, with a lifespan of 8 to 10 years is actually edible, along with the Gooseneck Barnacle but at just less than 1cm across the casing, will be a pretty hard extraction to savour, much like eating a periwinkle.
Area 2 seems to be tube worm country and with a high agree of electrical leakage from the dock areas, appears to limit much of the growth of the Acorn Barnacle. A good area for a marine Biology Phd student here.
Area 3 is definitely tube worm heaven. Water movement is limited to tidal flushing and surface action from boat craft. Sub surface, the benthos or seabed, is largely a mix of shale and mud and with tidal shifting, seabed agitation can be ideal to encourage the "business" of tube worm activity from the floating larval stage to the phase that triggers adherence via enzyme release, to your hulls.
So, short of using extremely toxic paints, anti foul mixed with chilli? Or introducing our venerable Wrasse in larger numbers, or indeed eating our little Acorns, there is little we can do other than stick to the traditional aspects of painting below the waterline, scraping and power washing. From tube worms to hard-cased barnacles, its the annual haul out and the 12 month repeat. Wherever you berth in the long term, keep Flotsam and Jetsam aware after you haul out, what of these two bio hooligans you find and just maybe, what one of them might taste like!

SAFETY BRIEFING
Crew briefing and safety on board
For all boats and crews, it is imperative to know how to avoid accidents and how to react if anything does not go according to plan. Part of that process is knowing how to use the safety equipment provided on each boat and as the case may be, additionally ashore. Every boat should be assessed using a format driven by a STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE, (SOP). These SOP's are described below and are not exclusive. However they provide each crew and skipper with a basis, from which threats can be interrogated, assessed, risk valued and then acted upon.
Ultimately, crew safety is an absolute and is paramount to the successful operation of every boat, inclusive of crew and the systems that depend on its functionality. This will involve an improved knowledge base from which a threat analysis can be processed for each specific boat. The responsibility for boat safety lies ultimately with the Skipper and his or her leadership. Every crew member has the authority under the direction of Command, to functionally lead as required and in accordance with additional experience that may not be garnered by the appointed Skipper.
An example of this might include a crew member on trapeze who may have better forward visibility than the authorised skipper on helm. To avoid collisions, that crew member can direct the helm accordingly by functionally leading. “Turn to starboard to avoid."
Where SOP's have been formally laid out by The Club, there are fluid processes that should be applied additionally, both to enhance the operation specifically and to adapt the functionality of that operation if a positive threat exists. This process will involve assessing each decision problematically by clarifying if each decision or judgement has merit.
Two systems are considered in this briefing that should provide tools to assess problem management, risk review and decision control.
Problem management and the "CLEAR "model
C—Clarify the problem. Does a problem actually exist? Confirm with crew.
L—Look for solutions. Brainstorm with crew or shore based personnel.
Prioritise these potential solutions.
E—Evaluate the better or best solution to employ.
A—Activate the process or processes the above has realised.
R—Review, recycle the model then close as necessary.
Use the 'Fire Triangle' analogy—DNA Desire? Need? Appropriate?
The DNA model is a decision making tool and depends on the triangle being complete. If the triangle remains broken then there remains an argument for NOT making this particular decision.
An example for this model may include the need to anchor on a gusty lee shore with no engine available. Is there a desire? Possibly. Is there a need? Possibly. Is it appropriate? NO. Thus the triangle remains incomplete and the decision to anchor elsewhere may be made.
by Stu Pryke

This safety briefing addresses the following criteria:
• Lifejackets & harnesses
• Safety & lifelines
• Fire extinguishers
• Flares & EPIRB
• VHF radio
• First aid kit
• Man overboard
• Life raft
• Galley
• Heads
• Garbage
• Engine
• Bilge
• Deckware
• Crew welfare
On all sailing boats and RIB's, each crew member will possess a PLJ, (personal lifejacket). All rib crew members should wear their PLJ at all times.
Sailing crew will wear their PLJ under the following conditions:
• At all times if a non-swimmer.
• At night and in heavy weather during daylight hours, (F5 and above).
• In reduced visibility, when horizontal distance is less than 1000m.
• At the Skipper's request.
• At any time the crew member desires, notwithstanding the above.
Safety lines
The use of safety lines is mandated for all excursions from the cockpit at night and during the day in conditions greater than F5. The clip on should be made on jackstays, shrouds or D rings but NEVER guard rails, hand holds and stanchions. In the case of very heavy weather with decks awash, reconsider the need to leave the cockpit. If an excursion is required then consider doubling up the safety lines and placing a safety carabiner at both ends of the line. Always advise other crew when departing the cockpit and pre discuss the tactics for action on deck, e.g., keeping the centre of body gravity low, slippery areas on deck, use of goggles in heavy spray etc.
Fire extinguishers
All fire extinguishers must be in date and fit for purpose. Their detachment from grab points, use and purpose must be fully understood by crew BEFORE use.
All crew must be aware if fire extinguishers are dry powder, BCF or H2O and location of additional units and fire blanket
Flares & EPIRB
The rules for using flares are:
• Orange smoke: daylight use only for position and pin pointing.
• White: preventing collision at sea.
• Red parachute flares: long range distress signalling.
• Laser flares: as above but caution for blinding of personnel.
Crews must know prior to slipping; the location, how to use flare and number on board. All EPIRBS will activate on 406 MHz and some on 121.5 MHz though since 2009, most will process alerts via a complex satellite system. Crews must know where the main EPIRB for the vessel is located and does it have an auto alert function? Be familiar with its mode of operation, Cat 1 or 2?

VHF radio
As long as one crew member is a licensed VHF radio operator, then any member of the crew can use either a mobile VHF or the vessel's fixed VHF radio. Familiarity with use of CH16 and relevant local channels appropriate to your operation. Never use CH16 as a chat Channel. Is the radio DSC and does it have GPS? Know the system each radio possesses for activating a MAYDAY. At the Skippers briefing, revise with the crew, the methodology of PAN calls and MAYDAY. A MAYDAY should be broadcast at 25 watts and full power on CH16.
A MAYDAY call out checklist, positioned next to the fixed VHF radio, to include references to SOB, (Souls on board), position relative to prominent land falls or latitude/longitude and nature of emergency.
First aid
Appoint a first responder and a secondary back up on a larger crew if necessary. Functional leadership should apply if a crew member is medically qualified. Location and basic contents of kit should be known and additionally, any unique components such as morphine, suture kits, dental care kits and O2 systems.
Man overboard (MOB)
Ensure all crew are familiar with the MOB button on the Navigation system, the recovery systems and the best point of recovery on your vessel. Lifting strops, appropriate halyards for victim recovery and unique recovery aids should be discussed and if possible practiced both under power and sail. Random Q and A on this subject is a good way for the Skipper to break the ice in the crew briefing and a sound way for the crew to relate to each other. If known poor weather will be encountered then it is essential to discuss the benefits of a leeward recovery or if large swells dictate, the location proximity of airborne Coastguard services. Who on the crew have their own MOB EPIRBS/PLB?
Liferaft
Use of the LR is a LAST decision and should only be made if the boat is on fire and or sinking. Inherently, the LR is a point of last refuge but NOT necessarily safety. The sense of the cliché, "it’s better to step UP to the LR and not down to it" should not be overstated.
Location of the raft and its use MUST be discussed at crew briefing and this will include a cross check of maximum numbers for the LR compared to souls on board, (SOB). Position and contents of the grab bag with fully powered up hand held VHF radio.
Galley
The crew as well as the appointed galley slave should be familiar with the following:
• ON/OFF switches and valves for gas bottle together with gas bottle stowage location and type of regulator used at the bottle.
• Gas isolation and gas detection system.
• Location of fire blanket and or BCF FE.
• Consider use of hot water flask prior to slipping to reduce risk of burn accidents if weather poor.
• Deep, rubber footed food bowls and drinking cups are best suited for use at sea.
• Pressure cookers with menus appropriate such as hot stews, soups etc are ideal items for stoves that must be fiddled. Check fiddle screws operate soundly.
• Matches are dry and location known.
• Bring relevant to crew galley items to front of stowage lockers for ease of use and location.
• Keep personal food in personal bags and NOT in the general galley area.
• Do NOT use personal camping stoves in lieu of the ship's stove.
船員中誰有自己的MOB EPIRBS/PLB?

Heads
If there is ANY part of the boat that demands demonstration of use, it's the heads. Show all crew the functionality of the head from seacocks to wet and dry pump out. Dispersal of paper waste etc, holding tanks and pump out protocols off shore, (3 miles). Heads etiquette and sea sickness protocols, (leeward side or bucket). Syphoning systems if appropriate and sink drains, shower water egress mechanisms.
Garbage
Organic, non-waxed food waste MAY be discarded at sea. Do NOT discard banana skins and citrus peelings at sea. All other waste to be bagged and disposed of ashore with recycle items as appropriate. Old fuel and oil, coolants and paint residues should be left on board for discarding at the dockside.
Garbage bags should have a dedicated location away from quarters such as anchor locker or sugar scoop on the stern.
Bilge pumps
Most lager boats have an auto bilge pump operated off a float switch. Additional manual pumps may be present and their operation known and this will include bilge handle location. Any unique bilge pumps and purpose should be discussed such as dedicated bilge pump to engine room floor and its outlet; alternate main bilge pump systems should the primary system fail and location of relevant spares.
Bilge pumps lead to knowledge of seacocks and this maybe complex to discuss on larger boats. However, each seacock will have a "blocker plugging cone" attached to the sea cock on off handle. Should the valve fail, then the cone can be hammered into place to stop ingress of water. There may be a suite of cones in the area of a number of seacocks due to differing sizes of valves.
Blockage of bilge pumps is not uncommon. Should the bilge area become full then check the float switch for damage or blockage by a heavy item. Paper, plastic and general waste can easily block a bilge intake. A digital and or a visual check, even if the bilge area is deep, is certainly in order to isolate other reasons for blockage.
If a manual bilge system is employed then the reason for use, i.e. source of water ingress, must be ascertained. Long pump out periods may need a shift system and or a diversion procedure if further damage or risk is imminent.

Deckware
Boom system: Does the boom have a preventer and how is this used? Will the boom be above head level?
Sails: All crew need to be familiar with the ship's reefing system and the vagaries of any unique in mast/in boom systems. If reefing requires "at the mast" crew action, then be familiar with best safety locking on points, solidness of granny bars and location of spare winch handles should they be needed at the mast.
Genoa reefing systems and power sources with usage (if hydraulic or electric) may require better knowledge since failure of complex power units will need complex manual interference.
Anchors: At sea, anchors should be stowed either on the bow roller with an additional tether or strop. Never rely on the gypsy to secure the chain but none the less, it is good practice to have the gypsy lock secured in its gate. If the anchor is secured off the bower then a crew member should be appointed as anchor leader and be familiar with re attachment to the chain should it be needed quickly, (e.g., engine failure in reduced visibility, grounding and waiting for tides etc.)
Winches: Know the winches, dedicated purpose, functionality, (hydraulic or electric), location of spare winch handles. Position of windlass and if it’s a primary trip threat.
Locate all the deck D rings and know where the best hand holds are located. Be familiar with hatch opening and if the hatches are forward facing or stern. Dorade vents or boxes; reverse face if necessary or store below if they have screw hatches to replace, especially if poor weather expected.
Crew welfare
"A bad day at sea is worth a hundred of good ones in the office." Remember, we are on the water to enjoy the experience and we are all part of a crew system to make that experience a positive one.
The Skipper should both manage and lead a crew. That means that crew welfare through means of proper counsel, feeding and hydration and appropriate teams-man ship, ( the suiting of best personnel together ), should be at the fore. Any member of the crew should be at ease voicing concerns, asking advice and procuring knowledge, under the command of a good skipper. Of course, that expectation also means that a good crew member must be compliant, observe SOP's and ships protocols and be prepared. A crew of six, with all possessing a Leatherman device have a high probability of being a robust team.
Alcohol: At sea, many skippers run a DRY ship. If the passage is long, then the matter of a 'sundowner' to improve crew morale can be contentious but ultimately, excessive drinking and certainly drinking on watch should NOT be tolerated. “A dry topside can lead to a permissibly wet gullet."
The skipper should always complete the safety briefing with “are there any questions?" This would be an apt time for you as the skipper to detail your concerns and thus foster a better attitude within the dynamic of the team. This might include, a first passage in this area; that you are a type 2 diabetic; or a whimsical.” btw, I don't drink coffee.” Be honest, approachable and share your knowledge with your crew. And from that, you can probably be satisfied that your safety brief. has been complete.
The safety briefing is a broadchurch outline to demystify the processes the Skipper should go through to assess the risks of taking his or her boat to sea. Its not exclusive but should provide a generic guideline where some SOP's, (standard operating procedures ) will be of benefit.

GRAND TRAWLER 62
When the 2022 "EuropeanPower Boat of the Year" award, gets pinned to a 62 foot Trawler, you either figure out the size of her nets or how many fish freezers she has under her deck winches. But, hang on, this is only a "Trawler" in the sense of possessing a reverse sloping, trawler styled bridge. The rest, is pure breed Beneteau.
The so called, "Grand Trawler", from the design bureau of Gollabrazie Natau and Amedo Migal, has offered up a contemporary hull with a straight but vertical bow stem and a low bow wave breaking chine. This mitigates the "bow bullet that was favoured a few years ago in reducing the pressure and form drag from the frontal areas. So, we have a very efficient waterline length, married to some pretty impressive sea keeping qualities for a boat of this size and mass.
Accommodation is almost in line with the vogue of open plan styling and this is evident with her thorough-fare from the aft deck, through to the inside bridge helming position. As she is primarily aimed at the owner operator market, crew accommodation is realistically scant but will amply settle for a crew of two in the bunk department only. That said, this is a long-haul and capable little ship that frankly, belies her overall length.
Offered in basic "Bristol Fashion" and good for passage distances of up to 540 nautical miles at an optimal 9 knots, she will easily eat the miles from the Trio 193 light to San Fernando in the Philippines, with a little fuel reserve to spare. At 12 knots, and 75% power, she will still deliver but don't count on significant levels of fuel remaining in both her tanks! Now, if you are keen on the old school notion of retaining your paper charts, pop your dividers onto Hebe and draw a 540nm circle and I think her cruising muscle will surprise you. That will give you Southern Taiwan and a heap of local cruising to Macau, the China Lemmas and a good stretch west of Zhuhai.

Twin MAN 730 HP diesels allow for good access to parts and a servicing schedule as good as any power units in the top class engine suites. The engine room has real space around the engine beds and noise levels under way are sensible below decks and quiet, above.
This boat however, is a kind of a hybrid. She is a sub species of sport trawler design going back to the eighties with the likes of De Fever and Grand banks but without the retroussé windows. She is better suited to extended short haul cruising and will rest easier in the waters of Mirs Bay and long weekends around the Soko's. Her folding swim platform begs to be used and that’s not going to happen on extended passage making, so essentially, she is saying, “flaunt what you've got" and that’s a notion she states well on anchor as well.
With a potable water tankage shy of 900 litres and a mere 28 tonnes, the Grand Trawler is both agile and versatile. Yes, she will work into tight docks with the ever fashionable bow and stern thrusters but needs caution from the helm in winds over 15 knots, since her high freeboard creates a generous sail in crosswind conditions. That said, the elevated fly bridge position gives a 360 degree panoramic view and very decent perspectives of both the bow and the aft decks.
Prices at the moment are determined by the Euro, after all, she is principally a French boat and that means her dock side dollar will vary fairly frequently. Give the team in the Simpson Marine office a buzz and they will gladly advise where those price listings, with the options, are currently settling. Even better, book yourself a slot on this Trawler without nets, not a single creel winch in sight and whose only freezer sits abeam the galley's Champagne fridge.

NEW ERA OF ENGINES
So, do you remember before Covid locked us all in our local bubbles, our Islands of Papillion and abrogated our lives to the penury of status? That we used to travel, and travel out of Hong Kong Central we certainly did! With vigour! Pre 2019, statistically, Thailand was the choice destination for those of us in the 852, to all the usual haunts we enjoyed so much; Phuket, Bangkok, Koh Samui et al. Ahhh, the Tom Yum, Pad Thai and Massaman Curry. The crazy Tuk Tuks and the long tail, high speed ferries with their exposed Isuzu engines.
“Hang On" I hear you say, "what on earth or on the Mekong has this to do with the TEMO 450 electric outboard?”. Ok paradigms over, so let’s get to the point.
www.temofrance.com
The TEMO is a light weight, 4.9 KG electric engine. It's powered by a lithium system and is ostensibly water proof, crash proof and will float if dropped at the dinghy dock or off the transom, (at least for enough time to retrieve it after docking the beer, swearing at the dog or re corking the Pinot.).
Designed in Nantes, the City capital of NW France, this is an engine that speaks Thai but behaves in French with a modicum of svelte. It is entirely portable with just about everything inclusive so it can be handled as easily in its carry bag as it can off the back of the RIB.
The Thai connection is inherent in its design, since it is effectively a version of our long tailed Isuzu powered skiff. This is an extendable or telescopic, long tailed, three bladed, 450W motor stuck at the business end of a very manageable, new outboard. Unlike the Torqueedo, the battery is built into the 1.7m shaft and that means two things of significance.
1. The system is a single unit.
2. There is no vertical hinge point for steering, since the whole assembly sits on a simple rollock. That means, shallow water access without damaging the prop off a fixed shaft and easier removal of debris from the blades. Less blue language as you hit those ghost nets maybe?
All the energy is linear to the prop and the power delivery to get you off the dock is at the top end of 200W. Whilst it’s not easy to translate two stroke fossil power to electric torque, Mathew Bromley, (the HKG dealer) tells me that this equates to about 3 HP at the delivery end. It’s NO long tail that will plane the RIB but it has 42 minutes of available power at full trigger throttle and 80 minutes at half speed. Now, that’s pretty good when you consider that the competition stands at half that time, is heavier and sports less agility both on the boat and in the bag. Re charge is under 4 hours and can be done

via 12v, 220v and 24V, (if you have a dedicated Lithium set up with step down, it is even faster). Nominal voltage of the whole unit is 25v. This all wraps up into an affordable engine for a light IB, (inflatable boat) of less than, say 35 KG, such as a Zodiac Cadet. Any similar tender with a roll floor is ideal for this motor but frankly, other than a wing engine, I wouldn't recommend it as a stand-alone unit for a dedicated RIB.
As an engine for coastal use with beach landings, negotiating rock outcrops to difficult landings or heavy duty shingle beaches, the TEMO works. It goes into reverse with the same low effort as it goes ahead. Yes, it is quiet, doesn't stink, belch white smoke or demand visual checks for a tell-tale water fall. It stores with ease and handling even if you are arthritic, not on steroids and can't bench press a large water melon. It can be stored below, out of sight of thieving ideas and is lockable if required.
I mentioned, "Agility". Maybe it’s a combination of lithe, lean looks and the where with all of a drone. Yes, it IS agile and will swing any roll floor IB on its axis but it has the ability to keep the tender, well. Sort of hanging. That trigger throttle is simply, a gem. No wrist twisting and no

NEW YEAR'S DAY BEACH PARTY
by Stu Pryke
The Sousa Moi was a tad late dropping the hook at Cascade and to ensure the Skipper was on his toes, the beach alliance party was all eyes on at assessing the anchor protocols of a rather prominent blue hulled Jeanneau. That said, there were yachts everywhere, even a ketch and a sturdy steel centre cockpit sloop, all in the cove were, excuse the idiom, “well laid"! Now, not for me to critique per se, but only one yacht sported the anchor signal, namely the hoisted black ball, brought to notice by a previous Commodore!
To say there was activity on the beach is an understatement. BBQ were in furnace mode and the wafted odours of sizzling snags, drum sticks and T-bones, mixed with Prosecco and the poor sailor's champagne, (San Miguel), drove the canine guests nuts as well as visually assessing the best beach chefs above the high water mark! Tides were on neaps I think and well set camps were moved up a few steps to cater for wave surge and floating eskies. RIBs were shore anchored and I am unsure if I have ever seen as many assorted dinghies on any one confined beach area. Essentially, this was almost what many of us in the Cruising fraternity would herald as a top notch venue!
The CSOH tribe is one made of true grit, IOR racing and a heap of lateral thinking, so it was no surprise that the competition events spurred the beach into yet another gear. Team Ashton engaged in true fashion and the pinnacle of the day brought us into the top Olympic events of egg throwing and yes, the tug of war. So, here it is, bar a stewards enquiry and a protest, I personally believe some of the eggs were hard boiled and the tug of war "coaches", ( Messrs Houghton and Casey ) had a definite strategy with almost nuclear tactics to boot. The girls won the egg event with some pretty impressive throwing though I believe a Mr Jones, yes of Simon fame, had a deliberate affray with his received pass, anointing the yolk to a sandy end that was finished off by a rather large ginger poodle.

BBQ time
The final event - tug of war. A genoa sheet was laid and a mid-point rag appointed with the winning marks foot driven into the sand. This was high tech at its best and umpired by the senior Ashton at almost Sevens quality and vigour. Strategy is key with TOW and in the spirit of pre match analysis, there was an obvious tactical move by both the skippers of the Steel Ketch and the Italian built Cat. Double bowlines settled on more than adequate waists, heels were dug and motivation chants affected. This was almost a beach Hakka folks, something rarely seen at Cascade Beach and the net result? Two wins against a contested loss. Umpire decisions were contested by a furious riot of competitors with little effect and thus, the anecdotal trophy of triumph was awarded to the bowline crew.
The first day of 2023 ended with a final gathering of Hebe staff, sustainability driving the departure of all and only footprints left on a retreating tide, though some were deeper than others and I'm sure I spotted some foot holds in the vicinity of the so called back anchor crew!
The rattle of anchor chains, more than the usual blue language and no one without a massive New Year's Day grin, fuelled by the best grog of the day, ensured a departure observed as a little ragged. All reached their respective moorings, sand dusted and cleated in comparative safety, though I'm certain Ichiban remains in limbo, somewhere between Lantau and the long haul to Langkawi!
Happy New Year to all and until next year, safe sailing and catch you at the high water mark in 2024!

ESG AT HEBE
ESG stands for ‘Environment Society and Governance’, it stems from the United Nations and is a set of standards designed to measure a business’s impact on the environment and society, and to measure how transparent and accountable for its action the business is.
Our Government requires HHYC and its members to have a responsible ESG programme and to exhibit good behaviours in this area. If we are unable to demonstrate good performance we will not be successful in our application to renew the Lease to the land in 2027. So we ask all members to fully support and add value to a range of positive initiatives, please.
Under ESG we are seeking to improve performance in non-financial and ethical areas. These include identifying and mitigated risks to the environment, society and the organizations reputation and to our legal status.
Through the activities of HHYC there should, ideally, be no net damage to the environment, no worsening of climate change or damage to society. This is very difficult and takes commitment and creativity. Some ESG activities may have no material value, but will have educational value.
by Andrew Brown
44 HEBE JEBES MAR/APR 2023 u SUSTAINABILITY FEATURE
A lot of good work has been done in this area by Management and the GenCom in the past and the current ESG committee will do our bit to build on that foundation. ESG inevitably leads to pressure to reduce consumption, produce less waste, have a little less convenience, and may require a change of attitudes and habits, all of which tend to be met with some resistance. We ask you to join us on a positive journey to a cleaner, less wasteful, inclusive and accountable club.
Areas of attention include:
• Energy, Water, Food, Buildings, Community and Governance
Initiatives the ESG committee are looking at with the GM:
• A study to assess the viability of replacing a defunct sampan diesel engine with an electric motor and power system, rather than a new diesel engine.
• A study to assess the viability of supplying some electricity for the Club facilities from sunlight.
• An initiative to offer more vegetarian options in the restaurant that may attract people who normally eat meat.
• An initiative to use locally produced, in-season vegetables in dishes, wherever possible.
• An initiative to reduce the amount of packaging entering our site that ends up as waste.
• An initiative to compost raw food waste onsite, turning waste into soil in which to grow plants and herbs.
• Working towards an air-conditioner temperature policy of 26 degrees C, supplemented by fans so as to reach 25 degrees in summer.
• A review of the suitability of signing up to a Clean Marina or similar set of internationally recognized environmental operating standards.
• A review and accurate recording of the Community contributions we make that benefit non-members and disadvantaged people, and exploration of additional initiatives.
• A review of fresh water usage and metering and ways to minimize wastage.
• Overview of production of educational materials to guide members in good behaviours in waste management.
• Advising on procurement, advocating resisting the temptation to buy and build things
• Advising on transparency and communication of the club’s Governance, as necessary.
• Advising and overviewing record keeping in all of the above (ie monitoring energy consumption trends and community events) so as to be able to show an audit trail to Government in lease negotiations.
Please do contact the members of the ESG Committee with ideas.

SAILABILITY’S MOHAN COMPLETES IN SOLARIS FOUR PEAKS RACE
by Enrico Zanella
MoHan skipper Enrico Zanella recounts the challenging 2023 Hong Kong Solaris Four Peaks Race, a dream come true for inclusive sailing
At 12.44pm on Sunday, February 5, 2023, we crossed the finish line!
It was tough, even in the in the first bay, Ma On Shan, where our runners needed to kayak for over 3km before tackling the 6+ km climb to the first peak. We experienced waves of several metres in the stern for about twenty miles south of Lamma Island, with cold and drizzle for a few hours.
And here is our story!
The team were absolutely fantastic – I had never sailed with them before this race. I let Ar Tai, skipper of MoHan, who was unable to participate in the regatta, and Fred, a Sailability Volunteer that I promoted to co-skipper at the regatta, organise everything and the training for this race, while I supervised everything.

In addition to being the co-skipper and therefore an active sailor on board, Fred is a very strong runner and therefore he also ran the two toughest peaks. Our helmsman, Wai, is very good upwind; Sylvia was on the jib, PUK on the mainsail, and Ok was our multi-role with sheets and winches. They didn’t let go of trimming the sails for a minute. John and Fung, the runners, had to struggle as counterweights in very important and difficult stages. Sunny Boy and CK had the role of “while you’re there”, one of the key roles because it helps everyone. David assisted Fred managing the boat’s manoeuvres. Kay was our fantastic steward, and she delighted us with various delicacies she had personally prepared.
At 10:50, we started upwind into Tai Tam Bay in two groups: 4 IRC boats started at 10.45 and 7 boats (one boat retired due to damage) HKPN Div A and B together. We set sail with the (smaller) reefed mainsail in 15 knots of wind waiting to get out of the bay to see what the situation was like. Over 20 knots were forecast, but it was 15-18 knots, and therefore we decided to fully open the mainsail as we passed the imaginary line between the Kau Pei Chau rocks and Sung Kong Island.
“In the first bay, Port Shelter, most of the teams launched their runners aboard kayaks more than two kilometres from shore, due to the total lack of wind. Normally, it would have been 50 or 100 metres”
We sailed upwind to the TCS2 buoy and then further up, passing Steep Island, west of the Trio Islands, Ping Min Chau rock, Shelter Island, up to Port Shelter to land at Tui Hoi Tsuen for the first mountain, the tough Ma On Shan Peak.
Fred and CK ran 12.75km, climbing and descending the 650m Ma On Shan Peak in two hours and 38 minutes round trip, including kayaking. We remained floating in almost no wind for over an hour. Then, a line of wind arrived in the distance.
Taking advantage of the current, we brought ourselves within this line and waited for our heroes to reach us after more than three kilometres of kayaking. Finally, we were able to set off again in the late afternoon with more than 17 knots of wind downwind towards our second destination, Repulse Bay, to climb Violet Peak.

On the outward stretch, all upwind from Port Shelter, I underestimated the current from the east and we were trapped near Trio Island by 1.8 knots of current which made us suffer a lot for reach and pass east of Ninepin Island East.
At that point, we entered the wind line in a broad reach. We all got back to enjoying MoHan‘s journey, having worked a lot on the setting, before arriving in Repulse Bay late at night.
Despite the (very strong) temptation to open the gennaker, I decided to live up to our stated intention of finishing the regatta in absolute safety and with the aim of learning to compete together, in an inclusive way. So, we kept our foot away from the accelerator and went downwind on the mainsail and jib.
In Repulse Bay, there were continuous gusts up to 13 knots and we decided to drop anchor a couple of hundred metres from shore for the race to Violet Peak. David and Fung, our runner with a lower leg amputation who runs with a prosthetic, paddled to the start point where our heroes ran the 5.5km to climb and descend the 405m Violet Peak in one hour and 56 minutes round trip, including the kayaking.
We remained at anchor with the mainsail hoisted, checking it when gusts arrived amid long periods of almost absolute calm. Upon the runners return at around 1am, we set sail with gusts up to 13 knots, we began the long navigation towards Lantau for the third peak.
Just past Round Island, we encountered 17-knot winds with gusts reaching 25 knots along the south coast of Lamma Island. For a few miles, the waves were more than a few metres high.
We arrived in Cheung Sha Wan Bay around 12.30am at night after a furious but extremely enjoyable ride which required the full attention of all involved. We lowered the sails and sat at anchor waiting for Fred and CK to kayak the two kilometres round trip and the 10.5km to climb and descend the 995m summit of Lantau Peak in two hours and 20 minutes total round trip.

We set sail again at dawn with overcast skies and about ten knots of wind on the beam to Shek Kwu Chao Island and then upwind with a maximum of 15 knots of wind, high waves and contrary current up to Ha Mei Wan Bay on Lamma Island.
The landing place was Lo So Shing beach. We suffered a lot at the edge and inside the bay from constant wind shifts, up to almost 180 degrees, which required a lot of effort from Sylvia, PUK, Ok and Wai.
Finally, we arrived near the beach and our heroes, John, who has a hearing impairment, and Sunny Boy, paddled the 200 metres to the beach, together with CK who brought the kayak back on board. We then set sail to the rendezvous point on the other side of Lamma Island at Mo Tat Wan.
There were variable winds (mainly downwind) until the exit of Ha Mei Wan Bay and then we sailed and against the current upwind with over 16 knots and gusts over 20. We reached the meeting point on a downwind and stayed with the mainsail up waiting for CK to paddle to the wharf where John and Sunny Boy embarked. It took John and Sunny Boy exactly two hours to ascend and descend the 6km route to the top and over Mt. Stenhouse, a 390m peak.
At 11:50, we set sail to the southeast to pass Chesterman Gate and then turned northeast towards the finish line near Round Island, between there and the Aberdeen Boat Club Committee Boat.
Thanks also to the Volunteers who gave assistance and carried out checks on land, on shore, along the route, at the summit and an orange buoy placed to the west of the boat itself. At 12.44pm on 5 February, we heard the horn, the signal that the race was over for us.
We screamed, rejoiced, messed around and hugged each other, super happy and proud to have fulfilled our dream: an inclusive Sailability Team participating in a challenge, only dreamed of before.
We sailed for 18 hours and 24 minutes, ran the mountains climbing a total of 2,440 metres for a total of 7 hours and 38 minutes, including the kayaking. Thanks to our yacht, MoHan and her comforts, we were all well, constantly happy and protected.

INTERVIEW WITH PARA SAILORS OF SOLARIS FOUR PEAKS RACE
2023 Solaris Four Peaks Race
“I am honored to join Solaris Four Peaks Race; this is a very tough race as the para sailors sailed for two days and para runners ran up and down Four Peaks. The journey was harder than I expected.
Our skipper Enrico was skilful to sail upwind and downwind, he made the 40 ft MoHan perform best. I appreciated the fast runners too; their running speed shortened the duration of our race. The teamwork among the sailing crew and the collaboration with the runners achieved great result, the first runner up is the fruit of our arduous striving.
Thanks to Li Ka Shing Foundation, it opened a new page for Sailability Hong Kong and provides new challenges for para sailors.”
“I was delighted and enjoying the race though I was so tired. I got to experience this challenge together with the mutual respect, understanding and cooperation of our team members.”

Thoughts from Kay Rawbone
As we saw out 2002 a very successful year once again for Sailability albeit only 8 months of sailing due to COVID restrictions early in the year. Record numbers for our grass roots and regular sailing programmes and also a good start for Mo Han as we trained crew and sailors and entered several races. Well done to everyone involved for making what we do at Sailability Hong Kong happen.
As always, a huge thank you to HHYC, Commodore, Gen Com, Staff for the support given to make a home for Sailability Hong Kong Limited. It really is appreciated and YOU all help us to change so many lives.
As we entered the Year of the Rabbit we have a couple of articles which we hope you enjoy reading.

I was so happy that I joined the Sailability Volunteer BBQ party last Monday , January 30 in Hebe Haven to celebrate the Year of Rabbit.
The Chinese New Year Gathering Party of that night was full of joys. We were all happy and made funs. The party served with wonderful BBQ foods and drinks.
In the course of the party, we chatted together and played Bingo game. The lucky draw was the highlight of that night. I was so lucky that I was drawn out with a prize. That night was so wonderful, and I enjoyed it very much.
In 2021, I retired from working. Through my friend’s referral, I joined the Sailability as a golden-aged volunteer. In the Sailability, I made a lot of friends and learned how to help people. Through our serving activities, I can learn that happiness is not inevitable.
I appreciate the Association to give me a chance to serve special persons who need our cares and help. In the Salability, we were taught how to sail a dinghy. With the sailing know-how, we served back those who need our care and help. Such satisfaction can’t be expressed or described in wording. Once again, thank you Sailability. I love YOU.

30 January 2023 was the most joyful evening I’d ever attended, in celebrating the Year of the Rabbit at the Sai Kung Hebe Haven Yacht Club. Not only many Sailability staff and voluntary workers participated but also the board members joined in the party too. The ecstatic and warm atmosphere filled up the entire party venue.
One could feel the cohesiveness of the Sailability staff and voluntary workers. The dinner was delicious, featuring the cultural mixture of Western (BBQ, salad and cakes) and Chinese (Fried noodles, fried rice and traditional sweet soup) cuisines. Unlimited flow of wine, beer, soft drinks and water was served throughout the entire evening.
The highlights of the party were the game of ‘Bingo’ and the lucky price draw from which many gifts were given out. Of course, the party would not be perfect without the group photos at 10 pm. Everyone went home with joy and a bag of yummy cookies given by Sailaibility. On behalf of Sailability staff and voluntary workers, I would like to thank Kay and the board of Sailability for organizing such memorable evening. Without Kay’s leadership and voluntary workers’ dedication, the party would not be successful.
It’s with great honour to have Kay, Barry, Mark, many guests and friends joining the spring reception dinner out of their busy schedules. All guests and 30 volunteers entered the venue successively at 6:00 p.m. They exchanged new year wishes with each other and the hall was filled with joy and laughter. Dinner started at 7 o'clock and everyone enjoyed the variety of foods as well as lucky Chinese New Year Foods.
After wine has been carried out three times, the splendid Bingo game commenced. Everyone enjoyed the game very much and looking forward to the desired numbers. The next programme is the grand lucky draw which pushed the atmosphere to the high point. Luck can come anytime to bring a grand prize.
We are grateful for Kay and caring persons for donating many lovely gifts, particularly giving each of us the delicious cookies in a beautiful package to take home. The dinner ended with a group photo session. Kay and three guests with zodiac sigh rabbit were posing as rabbit, which brought joy and laughter and marked the happy ending of the dinner gathering.

The Sailability Chinese New Year BBQ was held on 30 January at HHYC and 50 or so volunteers, instructors, and Directors all enjoyed an abundance of grilled meat – beef, pork, chicken, sausages as well as games and of course a lucky draw! Everyone present had a great time at what turned out to be am memorable, fun filled, and sometimes noisy evening. We’re already looking forward to the next one!
Sailability Co-Founder and CEO Kay Rawbone took the opportunity to bid farewell to Jesse Lam, one of the instructors who has been a real pillar of Sailability’s operations over the last 2 years and moved to the UK in February.
Kay said “Jesse will be a big loss to us but what I hope he will do in the UK where there are 202 Sailability’s and show them what we do in Hong Kong! But don’t go for too long! Come back – we love you, Jessie!”
An emotional Jessie spoke address everyone at the BBQ saying “Firstly thank you to all the Sailability volunteers. Over the last 2 years I’ve seen a lot of improvement and engagement in Sailability. In particular I want to say thank you to Kay who has given me the opportunity to do the things I love to do - to be able to teach sailing to people who are blind, deaf, and disabled. I have learned a lot from Kay over these last two years.”
Thank you and farewell Jessie, for now. We hope you will return to Hong Kong often!

Thoughts from Andrew Sheard—HHYC Member & Sailability Volunteer
January and February were a fairly quiet months for yacht racing, the Kowloon Cup was the only race, held on the 14- 15 January consisting of an island course on Saturday and a pursuit race on Sunday. This event had been cancelled for two years due to COVID and many sailors were very eager to compete this year. It was very foggy the day before the race and even on the Saturday morning, we were worried about not being able to start the race. Luckily the fog cleared around 2.30pm and we managed to run a full race. Sailors who came out to join the race on that day will never forget the experience of being surrounding by fog. Sunday was the pursuit race the weather could not have been more different. The wind was blowing, boats arrived at the Kowloon Cup Mark half an hour earlier than the target time and needed to make several laps between the windward Kowloon Cup mark and the leeward bay mark. Many of the sailors were exhausted from hoisting spinnakers up and down but they had a great time. Fifteen teams showed up at the prize giving award presentation at Yau Ley, the atmosphere was warm. What an unforgettable event!
The next event is the Monsoon Spring Series with the first race on the 25 February. There are a few changes we have decided to try on this event:
First, we have scheduled six race days instead of traditional five. We have only one geometric race scheduled on this extra day, which allows the race committee the flexibility to re-sail any races that have been cancelled or abandoned due to weather conditions.
Second, the race start time have been advanced by one hour to 1.00pm. In the past our Saturday races usually started at 2.30pm. About five years ago, with the implementation of five-day work in society, we moved the races to 2.00pm. Recently we have received some enquiries regarding and earlier start time. To this end, we emailed 71 skippers for their opinion and of 28 responses, 19 agreed, 4 had no comment and 5 disagreed. The main reason for the opposition is the concern about the loss of crew due to work obligation and living far away from Sai Kung. We believe there will be minimal impact of starting the race earlier, but weighing the benefits include giving the race officers more flexibility in choosing the race course and reducing the chances of the races being shortened, and encouraging more sailors to stay and participate in our prize giving presentation after the race, we decided to give a try this in our Monsoon Spring Series. We are of course actively exploring the ways to help teams find crew.
Lastly, we will do the ORC Club rating scoring for the HKPN classes. We will assist skippers to obtain a free 1st year ORC club certificate for their boats.
New J/80 sails
Recently the Club has bought two sets of high performance racing and six sets of training/racing Dacron based sails for our J/80s, which further enhancing our Club’s sailing development capabilities.
The usage of our J/80's has increased significantly with regular charters for keelboat racing, training and cruising. The revenue generated from J/80’s has also increased substantially. We believe J/80s are a key pathway for dinghy sailors and adult sailors to keelboat cruising and racing. With HHYC officially recognised as HKSF Keelboat training center, we believe there will be a higher demand on the use of our J/80s.
A sail audit was carried out on our existing J/80 sails last September. Thanks to Stu Pryke, our SailCom member, for conducting an assessments on our mainsails and headsails based on their UV degradation, wear and distortion, luff, leech, clew and tack point. The study has found that only one out six mainsails are in good condition and none of our headsails are in good conditions. Most of them are reaching the end of their lives.

Rear Commodore—Sailing
Given current sail conditions and the need for six identical sails for our upcoming Match Racing National in April, the Club decided to acquire six sets of more durable Dacron based sails for general training and racing. In addition two sets of high performance racing sails were bought under the budget of the Hebe Youth Foundation Fund for high level sailors. Staff from the Sailing Center have been assigned as custodians of the new sails. SOPs will be developed to ensure proper use and maintenance of these new sails.
In the future we will keep exploring ways to do even more with our J/80s. Stay tuned for what we’ll be announcing.
Seminars
Finally, as more and more new sailors join the keelboat racing and more members volunteer in our race management, we plan to run several seminars and workshops in the coming few months. These will include Introduction to Racing seminar, a Mark Laying course and a Race Management course. Stay tuned for the schedule.
全新 J/80 船帆

Kung Hei Fat Choi and best wishes for the year of the Rabbit! I hope you don’t mind me popping up here to share some exciting updates about sailing development at Hebe.
Hebe wins at HKODA annual event
Congratulations to Hebe Dragons for wins in the following categories at the Hong Kong Optimist Dinghy Association yearly event:
• Champion Under 10 Girls—Katie Lai
• Champion Under 10 Boys—Kian Anderson
• Most Improved Sailor—Jonathan Zeppezauer
• Manzoni Trophy—Chantal Henriksson
Hong Kong ILCA Nationals
Hot off the press
Congratulations to our two Hebe National Champions:
• ILCA 7 National Champion—
Tommy Wong
• ILCA 4 National Champion—
Daniel Chung
Other notable results include; Seb Van Ommeren coming 3rd in ILCA4; Peter Jessop moving up from ILCA4 to ILCA 6 and coming 4th, which is a great start for a 14 year old at this level. It was fantastic to see so many Hebe sailors taking part who have been unable to leave China for the last few years, as well as our newest cadet sailor from Singapore. Welcome back Patrick Feng, Jeremy Ma, and a big hello to Sam Hardy. Sadly they only got three races in, but with Race Week coming up it will be exciting to watch this space.
Upcoming events
• Hong Kong Race Week 14 – 19 Feb
• 1 April will see three of our Performance Team sailors; Peter Jessop, Seb Van Ommeren and Daniel Chan, take part in an ILCA Laser warm-up clinic and regatta in Lake Garda and then move on to the European Championships at Cadiz in Spain Championships 15 – 24 April
• Hebe Dragons Easter training camp—Royal Varuna Yacht Club, Thailand
• Hebe Dragons European trip—currently being explored
HKSF accreditation
I am delighted to announce that Hebe is now officially endorsed by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation as a keelboat training centre. We are the only club in Hong Kong to own six J/80s, which we put to great use for both keelboat training and racing. These boats represent an amazing opportunity for sailors to learn different roles from helming and mainsheet, to jib and spinnaker trim, to foredeck work. These are fun and exciting boats to sail and can be chartered by members to race in our regattas or just for fun and a bit of cruising. If you would like to become an approved helm or join a course to learn to sail a J/80 please contact the sailing office team.
Keep in mind that joining in the fun aboard J/80s not only opens opportunities to sail and crew on J/80s, but very often also leads to crewing opportunities on larger boats. Many of the big boats that race in the Typhoon or Monsoon Series are often looking for crew. The Sailing Centre is also looking at further enhancing Hebe’s crew-finder page—simply scan the links below to make use of this great crew-finder platform.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Lunar New Year.
The safety walkway installation on the boat rack is entering the final phase, the project is estimated to be completed by the end of March. After its completion the team will continue to optimise vessel parking in the hardstand area to try and facilitate more movement on the waiting list. I hope we have more good news to share in the next issue of Hebe Jebes
You may have seen significant changes in the appearance of the boatyard area. Over the past three months the Marine and Operations team have been working hard cleaning the area and moving containers around, to provide a safe, clean and tidy environment for everyone.
Over the winter period the marine team took the opportunity to lift up the three sampans the Club has used for over 20 years. The engines have been serviced, the sampans given a new coat of paint and new fenders fitted to get them ready for another few years of services.
On the marina side, we have re-installed the two sea bins, which will hopefully help to keep the surrounding area clean.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone to update their boat documents with the Marine Office - marine@hhyc.org.hk as the Club needs to regularly provide the Marine Department with a full list of licenced and unsured vessels on club facilities.
See you all soon at Hebe.
