Managing in the pandemic After a miserable couple of months earlier this year, the last two months have seen a welcome improvement in the access to and use of the Club. Nevertheless, in the light of the resurgence of the fifth wave, it is unlikely that there will be a further easing of restrictions.

I was delighted to receive an unsolicited compliment from a member of ABC on how well the management and staff at the Club have managed the pandemic restrictions this year—well done to all.

Some of you have spoken to me about the “pettiness” of some current restrictions. The rules are established by the HKSAR and have the force of law.

Neither GenCom nor the management has any right to exercise discretion (as doing so would put the viability of the Club at risk). Our role is to administer the law as it applies to the Club and I ask that you respect both the rules and our staff who have the thankless task of administering the rules.

Updated Articles of Association The General Meeting of Members (GMM) will be held on 21 June 2022.

Knowing that it will be over by the time that you read this, I do hope that the acquiescence and, indeed, acceptance so far is an indication that the new Articles of Association (AoA) will be approved. If so then the new AoA will take immediate effect and the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November will be held under the new rules.

HKSAR 25th Anniversary Sailing Cup This event involves cooperation between the Home Affairs Bureau, the Hong Kong Sailing Federation (our national body), the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Aberdeen Boat Club and Hebe Haven Yacht Club. This is a three-race event and is a tribute to the organising committee, chaired by Ambrose Lo, in which the Club was represented by Bridget Chan and Rob Allen. I quote from an email from Ambrose to his team and the three clubs: “We now have 132 boat entries for the HKSAR 25th Anniversary Sailing Cup …

Heartfelt thanks to you, we exceeded our committed target on this spectacular celebration event for Hong Kong and sailing. Working as one single team, you have proven that collaborations between sailing clubs can blast sailors with fun and the city with joy. Not to mention promotion of our sport.”

I was one of a number invited to watch Paul Chan, the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, start the first race of the event at RHKYC. Whilst we were comfortably ensconced in the Chart Room overlooking the Start Line, it was a challenging wet and windy day for the sailors as they struggled to adapt to the changeable weather which ranged from calm to windy to gusts to squalls with limited visibility. Still, despite some misgivings and some damage they pressed onto a finish.

The Club’s event was on Saturday 25 June 2022 with both a morning and an afternoon race.

Open Dinghy Regatta This was the first big event after the easing of restrictions and it is a credit to the committees and the Sailing Centre that it came together in such a spectacular manner. There were four courses, 12 classes of dinghies, 150 dinghies, over 200 sailors, over 70 volunteers and great weather.

Looking Forward …

Apart from the ever-popular UK Sailmakers Typhoon Series and the Peroni Summer Saturday Series, there are two other great events scheduled. The first is in early October and is called “Steering the Course" and is arranged by the Club and Sailability Hong Kong in support of a World Sailing initiative to help increase participation by women and girls in the sport of sailing. The second is the 24-Hour Charity Dinghy Race on 22 – 23 October 2022. Planning for this is well underway and it is always a spectacular sporting and social event.

於疫情下進行管理 在年初經歷了悲慘的數個月後，遊艇會於過去兩個月的到訪人數和使用人次方面都有 所改善。儘管第五波疫情再度爆發令進一步放寬社交限制的期望不樂觀。 我很高興收到一位ABC會員的盛讚，表揚遊艇會管理層和職員於今年的管理工作做得 非常出色——大家做得好。 部份會員與我談及一些現行限制有多「小家子氣」。這些規定由香港政府設立，並具有 法律效力。執行委員會和管理層並沒有行使自由裁量權的空間（這樣做將危及遊艇會 的運作）。我們的工作是執行適用於遊艇會的法規，而我希望你們尊重這些規定，以及 為執行規定吃力不討好的一眾職員。 會章更新 會員大會(GMM)已於2022年6月21日舉行。我知道當你在閱讀到份報告時，大會已經結 束。我希望直至目前為止的默許，或應說是接受，代表新的會章 (AoA) 將獲得通過。若 是這樣，新會章將即時生效，11月份的週年大會 (AGM) 將根據新規則舉行。 香港特別行政區25周年回歸帆船賽 是次賽事由民政事務局、香港帆船運動總會(我們的國家機構)、香港賽馬會慈善信 託基金、香港遊艇會、香港仔遊艇會及白沙灣遊艇會合辦。比賽由三場賽事組成，由 Ambrose Lo 擔任主席，而 Bridget Chan 及Rob Allen 將擔任本會代表。我在此引用 Ambrose 寫給他團隊與3個遊艇會的電郵： 「香港特別行政區25周年回歸帆船賽共有132艘艇參賽……我們衷心感謝各位，讓我們 在慶祝香港回歸以及航海運動的盛事上超越了承諾的目標。作為一個獨立團隊，您們 證明了遊艇會之間的合作可以為船員帶來更多樂趣，為這個城市帶來歡樂。其重中之 中，更是推廣我們這項運動。」 我是應邀觀看香港財政司司長陳茂波在香港遊艇會開始首場賽事的人士之一。雖然我 們舒適地留能俯瞰起點線的航海圖室中，但對於船員們來說這是一個充滿挑戰，潮溼 大風的日子。他們奮力適應多變的天氣，無論是平靜轉大風，到陣風以致能見度有限的 狂風狀況。即使抱有疑慮和損傷，但他們依然堅持到底。 本會的賽事已於2022年6月25日週六進行，分為早上與下午兩場賽事。 公開小帆船大賽 這是社交限制放寬後的首場大型活動，有賴各委員及航海訓練中心的配合和支持，成 就是次場面十分壯觀的活動。一共四條賽道，12個小帆船組別、150艘小帆船、超過200 名船員、超過70名義工和絕佳的天氣。 期望…… 除了大受歡迎的 UK Sailmakers 颱風盃系列賽和夏季週六系列賽外，還有另外兩項精 彩賽事。首個賽事將於十月初舉行，名爲「Steering the Course」，由本會以及航能香港 合辦以支持世界航海運動，鼓勵更多婦女及女孩參與帆海運動。第二個賽事為24小時 慈善小艇賽，將於2022年10月22-23日舉行。比賽的規劃工作正順利進行，它將會是一 個壯觀的體育和社交盛事。

Work has been continuing on a range of projects and this will continue over the summer. We will be communicating with members on what is happening and we aim to minimise disruption while we work on these important projects.

Bathroom renovation As noted in my last report, the work on the ladies’ bathroom uncovered various historical issues including fire safety, electric cabling and differences between official plans and the actual layout. We have modified our plans to address the issues and by the time of publication, the work on the ladies’ bathroom and disabled toilet should be essentially complete with work commenced on the men’s bathroom. We believe that the new layouts and features will be welcomed by members.

Fire safety As noted above, the works on the bathrooms highlighted that our fire safety installations in parts of the Clubhouse required upgrading. Accordingly, in the bathrooms and General Office, we are installing smoke and heat detection units, alarms and flashing lights, and emergency exits. Wherever possible, the work will be done in conjunction with other projects to minimise disruption to members.

General Office The General Office is being refitted to provide a better experience for members and their guests visiting the office and for the staff working in the office. The layout is also being reconfigured to provide better use of the available space and we are installing an emergency exit.

Garden Bar, Regatta Deck and Access Lift As part of the design of the lift and proposed Regatta Deck, we need to investigate the ground conditions at the proposed lift location and the nearby area. This will involve drilling holes in the ground down to the bedrock and digging ‘trial pits’ to investigate ground conditions. This work is scheduled to begin in early July and be completed within one month.

During this time, some parts of the Garden Bar will be inaccessible and safety barriers will be erected.

Design and planning for the Regatta Deck continue.

Marina piling Ground investigation for the marina piling works is complete and will now be analysed as a key input to the design of new marina piles which are taller, more durable and therefore better able to withstand higher storm surges.

Boat rack walkways The design of the boat rack walkways is now complete and incorporates safety features to protect our staff when they are working at height. This work is scheduled to start in July and will be carried out in stages with targeted completion by November. The work will involve the shuffling of members’ boats during this period; those members who are impacted will be contacted in advance by the Marine Office.

The Planning and Works Committee continues to spend significant time with the Club’s staff on our projects and I thank the committee members for their ongoing support.

We have had some beautiful days recently for getting out on the water, lots of sail racing kicking off again and it has been great to see the Garden Bar full of young sailors learning the ropes before they go off out on the water. We are also trialling extendable rain shades to help provide some coverage in poor weather conditions. Stop by and grab yourself one of our delicious freshly made sandwiches, wraps and nut bar combos as part of the Meals on Keels deal. You can also supersize your snack-pack-to-go with a six-pack of beers or a bottle of vino on ice in a yours-to-keep HHYC cooler bag.

Getting back to normal The social distancing regulations were relaxed on 19 May, which now means: • the Restaurant is open until 23:00 (last orders are 10.15 pm for food and 10.45 pm for drinks) • maximum eight people per table • Private functions in the inner restaurant can have a maximum of 30 people, and in the Restaurant 120 people, with 12 per table for banquets.

• Guest policy is back to normal—each member account can sign in up to four guests.

Triple vax rules • From 31 May, members and visitors now have to be either triple vaccinated, or if within six months of their second jab—having booked their third dose, or be able to provide evidence of a medical exemption; to enter the Club.

Faster Club Wi-Fi From the beginning of June, we have upgraded the Club’s Wi-Fi, which is now five times faster than before, as we switched from our old wire cable to a swanky new fibre one.

Hebe Golf Society Following the reopening of golf courses in Hong Kong, the Hebe Golf Society has swung back into action with everyone back out on the beautiful greens of Kau Sai Chau. We have multiple flights booked throughout the year at the beautiful Kau Sai Chau courses. Simply scan the QR code at the end of the report if you would like to join us on the green and/or back at HHYC for a BBQ and a few sundowners. The next ones are on 23 August (Tuesday) and 22 September (Thursday).

Wonderful washrooms The lush new female and accessible washrooms should be online by the time you read this report, and we will then shift to renovating the male washrooms (so it will be the men’s turn to use the temporary washrooms). The new design and complete refit provide extra showers, loads more locker space, and a bright and modern feel throughout. Check out the beautiful artwork with images from around the Club when you visit the throne rooms.

Both male and female washrooms come with baby changing stations and the female washroom also features a private changing room/nursing room—for those breastfeeding.

Speedier restaurant entry We have a new speedier scanner at the Restaurant entrance that also takes your temperature—allowing quicker and more reliable scans—with additional spot checks by front-of-house staff.

Masterplan Soon you will see some pits being dug in and around the Garden Bar to allow contractors to test the ground ahead of the build of the new access lift and Regatta Deck.

It is great to be back out on the water again and whatever the weather … happy sailing and happy clubbing.

RS Quests cross the start line

There was an air of excitement (and relief) on the 23 April as the Hebe Haven Yacht Club had its ‘reopening’ after nearly four months of stringent COVID restrictions. Young people gathered to rig their Optimists, Laser Picos and RS Quests so they could head out into Port Shelter to experience the joys of sailing once again—while parents and older folk gathered in the Garden Bar to share stories of how they were coping with the pandemic and enjoy the fresh air.

The past four months have been difficult for everyone, particularly those who love sailing. The two-household rule made it almost impossible to operate a keelboat and the authorities would not issue permits for Club racing. But, in an encouraging announcement, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive promised that a gradual relaxing of the rules would start from 21 April onwards. Restaurants could stay open until 10 pm and the number of diners per table would increase to four. Sports clubs could resume their activities though members would have to continue to check in with their phones and wear masks while going about their business … even while racing.

Nevertheless, sailors both young and old are a determined lot and are quite used to rules and regulations. These were discussed by coaches and instructors in the Garden Bar as the morning wore on. Getting out on the water, however, was the primary objective and by midday, some 40 people had gathered at the entrance of Hebe Haven and further out in Port Shelter, below the University.

But first, lunch. Once that was out the way, racing began with the RS Quests enjoying a short course near Sha Tsui light, honing their starting and tacking skills with much encouragement from coach Andy Service, and other race officials. Powerboats leaving and entering Hebe Haven gave the fleet additional challenges, along with the kayaks and ferries from Sam Sing Wan nearby. The purpose of these mini-races was to prepare sailors for the Open Dinghy Regatta 2022, scheduled for the 21 and 22 May.

Coach Andy held a de-briefing in the Garden Bar before darkness fell and the aroma of a delicious BBQ wafted through the tables.

Those who decided to go out on the water (or just potter around on their boats), took advantage of the Club’s latest offering – Meals on Keels – a takeaway (in four sizes) with all a sailor could ask for!

How long have you been with HHYC and what does your typical workday look like? 您在 HHYC 已經多久了？您平常的工作日是如何的呢？

I have been with the Club for two years and during that time I have enjoyed discovering the long history of the Club. My role is quite special as it interlinks across different departments and requires me to liaise with both internal stakeholders as well external ones such as the government. This can make my role quite challenging as it needs to adapt to the pace of different departments as some work at quicker paces than others.

Right now, we are at the finishing stages of the female washroom renovation, and these should be open to members very soon. We will then move on to renovating the male washrooms. Afterwards and towards the end of the year, we will then start work on a lift from the ground floor to the restaurant to ensure that everyone can enjoy all of the Club’s facilities.

In about a year’s time, we will start work on the biggest project which will be the garden bar. This new 700 square metre, two-storey building will feature a multi-purpose room that will enable the Club to host wedding banquets and business seminars. What upcoming project are you most excited about? 您最期待的下個項目是甚麼呢？

The project I am most excited about is the septic tank project as this is a challenging underground project. The solution to this problem is for me to find a way to connect the septic tank to the public sewage system which has involved being quite tactful.

As the Club is at a lower level than the highway, in the past it has proved to be quite challenging to connect to the public system.

However, as the Government announced that it will expand Hiram’s Highway, I began talking with them over a year ago about how best to leverage this project to the Club’s advantage. I have been able to successfully negotiate with them to provide the Club with two things as part of the expansion works. First, they will install a new ramp to access the carpark and second, they will help install a connection point to the public sewage system.

Personally, I would like to see the Club become ‘greener’ that is, create more green spaces for club members to enjoy. These types of spaces would be more welcoming to members and add more ambience to the Club. Aside from planting more trees or creating green spaces, the greening could also be incorporated into the walls of the Club’s buildings.

One thing that I think would be really cool would be to install is a rotating car park. I am actually doing so research as to how to make this happen as they already exist in Hong Kong.

For me, it would have to be learning about the long history of the Club and also how its buildings have evolved. The Club’s buildings are quite special and sustainable in a way as they have been expanded on several occasions over the years. I am a huge fan of preserving historical buildings and as the Clubhouse is quite an old building, I have really enjoyed getting to know the history behind it.

The first thing I look for is someone who takes the path of least resistance. As a Project Manager, you always want to identify this type of person as they are the ones that look for the easiest path, think of solutions that do not waste resources and tend to want to fix things in an easier and more efficient way.

Aside from that, someone who is naturally curious would make a great addition to the team. As things are constantly changing, staying curious will ensure that the person keeps on learning to find the best solutions to future problems no matter what.

FORE! HEBE GOLF SOCIETY TEES-OFF 衝啊！白沙灣高爾夫球隊開球了 !

The inaugural Hebe Golf Society event was held at Kau Sai Chau golf course on 2 May. Experienced and amateur golfers alike congregated at Sai Kung pier which ferried the golfers to the verdant course for an 18-hole round putting their strokes to the test.

Kau Sai Chau is the only public golf course in Hong Kong and is just a short 15-minute voyage away from Hebe Haven. Set in the spectacular Sai Kung Peninsula, Kau Sai Chau boasts three courses—North, South and East, which feature open ocean vistas, challenging holes and a magnificent mountainous backdrop, ensuring the courses are not short of drama.

With refreshments on hand and buggies at the ready, the golfers opted to tee off on the South course. With some impressive swings, the action well and truly got underway though there were some first-hole mulligans. By the second hole, the competition began to heat up and it was decided that the golfers would be vying for the closest to the pin.

After some serious putting, Club General Manager, Paul Arkwright, came closest on the second hole.

With balls flying down the fairway, members managed to make par on several holes. However, the refreshments seemingly began to affect some swings as several topped shots were made resulting in some of the players being forced to dig themselves out to get back in the game.

By the fifth hole, it was time to once again vie for the closest to the pin. After some serious waggling, it was society member Yim Tse Kim who was able to go the distance and become closest to the pin.

The eighth hole of the course tested the golfers’ ability to deliver the longest drive down the fairway. Each player rose to the occasion, though ultimately, it was Joanne Cheung who clinched the victory for the ladies with Paul Arkwright delivering the longest drive for the boys.

Despite ragging the longest drive of the day, Paul also managed what was probably the day’s shortest drive as he topped one of his tees and the ball rolled forward by three feet towards the ladies’ tee.

OPEN DINGHY REGATTA 2022 DAY ONE

2022 公開小帆船大賽首日 Towards the end of April, the Club held a reopening weekend to remind its members what it was like to be out in the fresh air and how to enjoy life after four months of lockdown. It was a gentle affair, but on 21 May, it was a return to normal with the start of the Scallywag Foundation Open Dinghy Regatta 2022. Well, almost normal as masks still had to be worn ashore.

遊艇會在4月底舉辦了一個重新 出發的週末，喚醒一眾會員在 歷時4個月的社交限制後，感受 如何呼吸新鮮空氣,。雖然只是 一個小型活動，但隨着5月21日 Scallywag資金 2022公開小帆船 大賽的開始，逐步恢復正常。 由於在岸上仍需戴上口罩，所 以應說是幾乎回復正常。

At the briefing, Sailing Centre Manager, Rob Allen, outlined the day’s proceedings and the positions of the four courses in Port Shelter. Course one would be tucked in under the University, course two on the opposite side of Kau Sai Chau, course three further southeast off Silverstrand, and a choice for course four depending on conditions—course 4a off Hap Mun Wan (Whiskey Beach) and 4b in open water beyond Shelter Island. Barry Truhol was the principal Race Officer (RO) for the weekend.

Under the inspirational direction of Allen, more than 70 volunteers and staff swung into action, preparing buoys, arranging fuel, assisting youngsters, packing food, launching dinghies and generally making it all happen. A big job, but one that worked well this year with the calming influence of the veterans making sure all courses were ready by midday. The 29ers and 470s chose Course 4a over venturing out beyond Shelter Island.

There were 150 entries and all but one made it to their respective starts.

This meant some 185 sailors on the water, many from the registered charity, Sailability Hong Kong, which is based at the Club. The numbers were somewhat down from 2021 (172 entries) but were still respectable given the territory-wide attrition sailing has experienced over the past year.

In five to seven knots of south-easterly breeze, the Optimist Green fleet, under the experienced eye of Gregoire Bourrut Lacouture, began the first of four races.

With support boats aplenty, the young newcomers battled it out with Tara Maliah and Margaux Nguyen-Minh putting on impressive displays, tied on nine points, with Tara claiming the day’s honours with Cleo Badenach third.

Over at Kau Sai Chau, on course two, the Laser 4.7, Laser Open, 2.4mR, Optimist Open and Optimist Intermediate fleets, kept the RO and his team fully occupied.

Eight support and safety RIBs and sampans tended to a staggering 89 boats, making sure they all rounded marks, sailed by the rules and stayed within their race area. After three races, Peter Jessop led the Laser 4.7 division, with Seb van Ommeren in 2nd and Daniel Chan 3rd. Competition in the 12-strong Laser Open boats saw Charlie Robinson win the day, with Michael Anderson in 2nd and Alexander Ching in 3rd.

There were seven entries in the 2.4mR division but Mark Houghton missed the first of their three races (mast halyard problems), and Jacqueline Siu missed all three. Foo Yuen Wai of Sailability won two and finished 3rd in the last race to claim the daily honours, followed by Chi Yeung Puk and Candy Tse.

The Optimist Open (Yellow) fleet completed three races and Jai Mutreja from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club claimed a hard-fought victory.

In 2nd was Jonathan Zepperzauer from Hebe Haven Yacht Club and 3rd Zihan Liu. The Optimist Intermediate (Blue) fleet saw David Wang emerge victorious over his 21 competitors, with Cheuk Hymn Decimus Chan in 2nd, followed by Toby Ouyang Shuhang.

On course three, Julie Mackenzie had a varied fleet of Quests, Hansas and Picos to officiate. There were nine RS Quest entries who were eager to get going.

SAILOR’S AWARDS NIGHT 2021/22 年度傑出海員頒獎夜 It was the biggest night of the Club’s social calendar and after a year-long hiatus, a merry band of sailors descended on the restaurant for a fun-filled evening that celebrated our sailor’s achievements over the past year.

With a five-minute warning, and after a lively scramble to the bar to keep the drinks flowing, it was time for the first of the four award categories—Community. This category celebrated the achievements of the sailors for the Scallywag Foundation and Children’s Cancer Fund. Hebe’s sailors have supported the CCF for a number of years and thanks to their amazing contributions, they have enabled a number of cancer patients to undergo much-needed, expensive therapeutic treatments.

Unfortunately, lead coach Alfy was unable to attend to present the Dragons with their awards. Instead, he had prepared a pre-recorded video that—despite some volume issues, commended the young sailors’ achievements over the past year.

With a total of eight awards, this was the evening’s largest category which fully showcased the diverse range and ability of Hebe’s sailors and volunteers.

Kay Rawbone, CEO, Sailability in an emotional address to the room commented, “Our sailors showed incredible spirit and strength this year and without the continued support from Hebe and our volunteers, none of this would be possible.”

The final category of the evening was Yacht Racing and Regattas which celebrated the success of IRC and HKPN boats for their impressive performances at racing events and regattas over the past year. The boats were awarded the new battle flags which can be proudly hoisted on their stays at all future racing events. But it was not only the winners of this year’s awards that were on the receiving end of the new flags.

Both IRC and HKPN winners stretching back to 2018 were awarded the newly commissioned flags.

Rounding off the evening was the final award of the night—the Charisma Cup. This cup is awarded to the boat that performs best in the Kau Sai Chau pursuit and anticipation reached a fever pitch, with the excitement causing some members to drop their prizes and others to even put down their wine.

In Hong Kong, we are blessed with little tide compared to waters such as the Bristol Channel, The St Lawrence Seaway or even The Mersey, though, in periods of spring tides, we can experience ones of over 1.5 metres. In the whole pool of tidal science, Hong Kong remains at the shallow end but that does not mean we should neglect the impact of its local extremes.

It was only recently that a spring high tide caused the HHYC dinghy dock to separate and the boatyard outlet’s sumps to flood. These are expensive events however, the contingency measures for a typhoon surge and an accompanying low-pressure system could cause as much as a five-metre swell, introducing another set of parameters—ones that see major breakages of both dock-ware and boats alike.

Just off the South Dock by barely 15 metres lies a rising seabed. Thankfully, it is an area of mud, light silt and shale. Yet, on a spring and neap low tide, it can present a keel strike problem for yachts with a draught of over two metres. Boats have been stranded there and sat incongruously for a rising tide to save the day. Certainly, a Sunday spoiler if the crew were on their way to Yau Ley or Cascade!

Soft groundings on the ‘Hebe Hump’—red faces aside, have generally been lowkey events and light on damage. Below are a few tips that may just avoid a low tide grounding for those boats in and around the eastern HHYC marina entrance and those setting off from the south dock for the red and green channel marker cans.

First, take time to research tidal conditions. Reference can be made via the E Sea App, Government Tide tables, The HK Observatory or simply the watermarks around the Club’s slipways and steps. Second, ensure that Navionics and the depth sounder are on before slipping moorings. Be aware that a common trait amongst Skippers is to leave the navigation system off until beyond the swing moorings or at the end of the navigable channel abeam Trio Beach. Setting the depth alarm to the zero nulls of the vessel's draught (and a wee bit more) allows some contingency.

Typically, at speeds of less than five knots, (the maximum speed in the ‘Hebe basin’ until after Trio,) the signal cone of the average commercial echo sounder will be a boat length ahead of the vessel. Enough time to react if the alarm sounds.

Finally, take time to review paper charts of any area that you may be uncertain of. Ensure you know the value of the contours, (metres, feet, fathoms or even cables), where the shape of the seabed changes under your intended track, and if shortcuts and diversions present potential threats.

A safe passage means there must be no doubt that the terrain below your keel presents a threat. If it does, you need to change the route and review your next intended navigation metrics.

Illegal moorings up to the Southerly Cardinal and the light (3 Fl, six seconds) at Man Tau Tsui, (or the Trio Beach Headland Light), have caused the channel— especially at night and in dense traffic, to be restricted enough to push boats underway to use the gap closer to Sha Tsui and the Leadership Training Camp. Here, the water drops to 1.1 m (mean low) and though the ground or benthos is mostly shale and mud, that contour is not a constant and is not all soft ground.

Old concrete mooring blocks, anchors and chains litter the seabed and a keel strike in this area, even at five knots, would prove interesting to say the least. A so-called ‘hard strike’ on a fin keel could potentially create a number of problems and invariably mean a lift out to inspect the damage. This may include all or part of the following:

A hard strike at higher speed would be serious and as we know, lost keels mean inversion and loss of hulls. A 15-tonne sailing yacht at a speed of eight knots struck the Cows Tail Reef on Shelter Island. The engine mounts separated, and the impact also caused the water and fuel tanks to move forward a matter of inches. Irrespective of the damage to its cutaway long keel, the boat was an insurance write off. Imagine the damage to a boat and crew if an impact was made at 18 knots or more?

Take a look at the water around Lak Lei Tsai, Trio Island and the rocks of Pak Pai on the western side of Port Shelter’s entrance. Following the latest COVID shutdown, Sailability opened up to its sailors on 30 April and since then it has been quite busy.

Para Sailors Training The training restarted during the first week of May as they also got themselves and their boats up to speed for the upcoming Regatta. They are also looking forward to the second year of the Mike Rawbone Challenge Race Series which begins on 5 July. This series—as you may remember, is made up of three individual race series: The Kaplan Series, The Blacklaws Series and The Sean Browne Series, with the overall winners in their classes winning the Mike Rawbone Challenge Cup. This year, they will be joined by new sailors and volunteers to make the race even bigger and better than before. Thank you to Catherine Smith, Director, Sailability Hong Kong Limited and Company Secretary for being the RO again this year.

Parent & Teacher Training Designed to teach new teachers and parents, who will accompany their children/students when they join our programmes. The first group to start their training this year was from the Hong Kong Red Cross Margaret Trench School, which started training on 7 May. The group really appreciated the opportunity to learn to sail and for their children/students to have sailing opportunities in the months ahead. This is the second group to be trained by us from this SEN school.

Scallywag Foundation Programme Our 2022 programme restarted with students from our ASD13 group who graduated on 8 May. Well done to this group who had a huge gap in their training programme but were all able to graduate.

This was followed by the restart of Ebenezer School for the Blind. Sadly, there was also a gap in this group’s training and everyone was so happy to be able to come back to the Club to get back on the water and in the water. An amazing group supported by our amazing volunteers. Thank you, Scallywag, this really is a fantastic programme for the under-represented within our community.

Racial Harmony Programme Funded by Home Affairs Department (HAD) and supported by Daoud Kamal—who was in our first group of ethnic community sailors sponsored by the Scallywag Foundation Programme. He has gone on to become one of our Safety Boat Drivers after passing his PVOL2 last year.

This Racial Harmony programme began in December 2021, comprised of a family day and during the first week of 2022, a one-day sailing course. Hebe One was hired for the family day to offer an educational tour of the area and to trial sails in our boats to a different group from within our community, who had not had the opportunity to do so before. There were many smiling faces once again. A big thank you to the F&B team for providing a great vegetarian lunch which was enjoyed by everyone. Now we are back to the real part of this programme—learning to sail, which restarted on 30 May offering sailing to mothers and children.

Hebe Haven/Scallywag Open Dinghy Regatta A major annual event in our Sailability calendar with 24 of our boats participating in three different classes. A huge thank you to HHYC for the invitation to be part of this inclusive race once again, to Rob Allen and his team for all their hard work, and to our Committee Boat and the Committee for ensuring the smooth running of our races— especially on the Sunday when the weather was a little breezy! This year, we wanted to utilise the skills learned by sailors from our regular Saturday Sailing sessions, schools, organisations, and the under-represented groups in our community together with a new group of volunteers who have been introduced to sailing and to volunteering via our 2021 Senior Sailing programme sponsored by the Hong Kong Club Foundation. A huge thank you to our team of coaches, instructors and volunteers who worked to get everyone ready for the racing and offered support during the event too. A lot was learnt and achieved, and we are so proud of everyone who took part in this Regatta. Well done.

Sailability CEO and Co-Founder, Kay Rawbone, Para Sailor, Foo Yuen Wai, and Director, Catherine Smith, all contributed to the presentation.

Award-winning sailor Foo Yuen Wai told the webinar that when he was a small child, he could walk but at age three, polio changed his life. Since then, he has used a wheelchair and reminded everyone to “cherish our healthy bodies.”

Surprisingly, he admitted to getting nervous about sailing before he gets into his yacht saying it is because he cannot swim, but once the boat leaves the pontoon he relaxes; “The sea is like a mother cradling a child” he said.

“My advice to anyone thinking about sailing is to try. At least do not say no without trying it.”

In 2014, Sailability HK took part in the Asia Paralympic Games in South Korea and even though this was early in Foo’s sailing career, he managed to make it onto the team. The water conditions in Seoul were different to HK; the waves were rough, the temperature lower, and the wind stronger. Many competitors from other countries were more accustomed to the conditions than the HK team. Foo said, “I fought hard and managed to win one race and finished third overall for a bronze medal.”

Kay Rawbone said that Foo is a “strong character” and told the webinar that Sailability HK is one of the busiest Sailability centres in the world. Sailability is an NGO that reaches out to people with different abilities, age groups (both older and younger), sexual orientations, and statuses. She said, “Our mission is to change lives. We provide opportunities and a pathway to sailing qualifications.” She reported that one young sailor who started sailing on a Sailability programme had been selected for the HK national squad this year.

Sailing is one of the most inclusive sports where physical and intellectually disabled people or those who have had a life-changing accident or illness and are able-bodied can take part together.

CLUB UPDATE

As you read this, we are in the middle of the summer. Our two traditional keel sailing events, the Summer Saturday Series and the Typhoon Series have been kick-started on 6 and 12 June, respectively. Every weekend you will see many keelboats racing in the waters of Port Shelter!

Since May, sailing lessons, events and racing have resumed as COVID-19 restrictions eased. On 21 and 22 May, we had a very successful Open Dinghy Regatta with around 150 boats and over 200 sailors taking part across these two-day racing events. A seminar on Racing Rule 42 Propulsion was held a week before this event to give sailors a better understanding of Rule 42.

This seminar was attended by about 20 persons in person and about 50 participated on Zoom. The attendance hit a recent record high! Thanks to HKSF judges for their support.

BRIDGET CHAN Rear Commodore—Sailing

The Annual Sailors Award Night on 25 May honoured the best performing sailors and boats from Sailiability, Dinghy and Keelboats as well as volunteer of the year 2021. For the past two years, we cancelled the award night party due to COVID but this year the party was finally back! On the Keelboat side, we presented awards to the Boat of the Year (BOTY) and the Sailors of the Year.

Congratulation to H3O (IRC Division) and Ichiban (HKPN) for winning the BOTY award and Juliet Ashton and Simon Jones for winning our Female and Male Sailor of the Year awards. As mentioned in the last issue of Hebe Jebes, a BOTY burgee was designed and made to be presented to the winners alongside their trophies. That night, in addition to this year’s BOTY Burgee winners, we also invited previous year’s winners to receive their BOTY burgees including Windseeker (2017), Bits & Pieces (2018), LoTech (2019) and Ichiban (2020).

In June, we had the first-ever HKSAR 25th Anniversary Sailing Cup which was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) and three major yacht clubs (HHYC, RHKYC and ABC). This event, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of HKSAR, comprises three races in three waters by the three clubs over three different weekends. Boats can opt to participate in any individual race(s) or all races or team up with other boats to finish all races to compete in the Sailing Cup. This may be the first time that the three yacht clubs have jointly hosted a racing event in Hong Kong. Did you participate?

First of all, I would like to introduce Mr. Billy Ng. Billy, the Club’s new Marine and Facilities Manager, has rich experience in operations and management of the Marine Department. Billy hopes to provide quality services to everyone in-line with our facilities.

The typhoon season has arrived. For the sake of safety, please check whether your mooring equipment is in good condition.

The General Committee has passed the Operation Committee's recommendation to completely replace the mooring facilities of the Club. The project is expected to be completed by October.

Our new crane has been delivered and has been put into service. We have been working hard to upgrade the equipment in order to achieve the safest and best service.

EDDY LO Rear Commodore—Operations

Recently, some members mentioned that their boats hit an unknown object in the waters around the Shelter Cove area. Our Marine staff immediately followed up but were unable to find the object. If you have any information, please notify the Marine Department immediately so that we can follow up and notify other members. We would like to remind everyone to be careful when navigating the Shelter Cove area.
