It is hard not to mention the pandemic after the last 14 months but, unlike this time last year, I am optimistic that we have turned the corner and a normal life is within reach.

Paul Arkwright has just hosted a webinar on the physical developments within the Club. I am grateful for his efforts. He and his team have a very big agenda and they are making good progress in an extremely regulated environment; and although these compliance processes will test our patience; I am confident Paul and his team will deliver on their promises.

It is great to see both the sailing and the sail training programmes starting up and there has been some excellent weather to encourage enthusiastic attendance by you all.

We are looking at upgrading our website to make it more accessible and userfriendly to members; and we are also looking at a refurbishment of the washrooms and changing rooms.

很難不提過去14個月的疫情，但與去年不同的是，我對今年的局面比較樂觀，希望能 儘快恢復正常的生活。

Paul Arkwright早前主持了一個關於遊艇會未來發展的線上研討會，我很感激他為 此付出的努力。他和他的團隊在負責一個非常大的項目，並在一個嚴格監管的環 境下取得了良好的進展；儘管這些過程非常考驗人的耐性，我相信Paul和他的團 隊會履行他們的承諾。 很高興看到航海活動和航海訓練課程現已開展，近來天氣非常好，鼓勵大家 踴躍參加。 我們現正考慮升級本會網站系統令到會員更方便使用；並考慮重新裝修洗手 間和更衣室。 另外，也有其他項目也在開展中，希望各位會員能閱讀今期會刊，留意本會 最新進展。 Don Johnston

Masterplan and lease renewal 總體規劃與續約事宜 Short-term projects We are working with our Authorised Person (AP), Carmen Chan, and Fire Services Engineer (FSE) from (Arup) to give qualified support for the deletion of the FM200 requirements from the General Building Plan (GBP) for the Garden Bar and storerooms. 短期項目 我們正在與相關工程項目的認可人士Carmen Chan和Arup的消防工程師合作，從花園酒吧和儲藏 室的總建築平面圖中刪除FM200氣體滅火系統的要求，並得到他們批出支持上述要求的文書。

Longer-term projects Knight Frank has submitted the second draft of the Town Planning Board (TPB) submission, and PWC is working on finalising that draft. To this end, CY is now working with that draft and incorporating input from different stakeholders to help ensure what we build in terms of the new regatta deck and ground-floor open space below it is fit for purpose. Everyone who runs events in this space is being consulted to help quantify their current needs; including, Rob at the newly named 'Sailing Centre' (which encapsulates both the Sail Training Centre and Sail Training), Billy from F&B and Jessica Yau, who is instrumental in organising large-scale club meetings like our AGMs. After this, we will finalise the proposed concrete structure's exact floor area to replace the garden bar tent, which will be submitted in the report to TPB to help us obtain a lease modification and, once approved, proceed to the detailed design and construction phases. 長期項目 Knight Frank已提交城市規劃委員會提交的第二份草案，計劃及工程委員會正在最後訂稿。為 此，CY目前正在處理該草案，並結合不同利益相關者的意見，以確保我們建造的新帆船甲板和 其下方的底層開放空間符合土地用途。 我們會諮詢所有將會用到這些空間舉辦活動的人，以了解他們當前的需求。我們聯絡了「航海 中心」(舊名為航海訓練中心)的Rob, F&B的Billy，還有Jessica Yau，她是本會大型會議的發起 人，例如我們的年度會員週年大會就是她組織的。在此之後，我們會確定擬議的混凝土結構的 確切樓面面積，以取代花園酒吧帳幕；然後撰寫報告提交予城市規劃委員會，有助於我們修訂 契約。在獲得批准後，就能進入下一階段的設計和建造工作。

Masterplan update—members' Webinar As promised, we held two members' webinars (one in Chinese and one in English) to help detail project status, past, current, and future. The webinars were well received and attended by over 50 members. Seawall repairs We are expecting the excavation and lateral support (ELS) submission from AECOM shortly.

This will provide the Club with a detailed design and a costing for the ELS works—a prerequisite for the seawall repair works. 海堤修理工程 我們希望AECOM能儘快提交「挖 掘及側向支撐安裝工程」計劃， 這將為本會提供詳細的設計和工 程成本，這是海堤維修工程進行 前需了解的資訊。

Boatrack safety walkways Buro Happold (BH) has updated the walkway design, which after review will be sent out to BD for approval before commencement of the contractor tender process and construction phase. 船架安全通道 Buro Happold (BH)已經更新了通道設計，經過審查後，將在承建商投標和施工開始 前，呈交屋宇署審批。

Club driveway Those who drive to the Club or walk down the ramp may have noticed the slope wall's gradual degradation along the access slope—particularly near the top of the slope. To enhance safety, the Club's maintenance team has taken measures to sure-up the wall by re-concreting sections of the slope wall. Moreover, we are taking steps are being taken to avoid cars being parked illegally at the top of this slope—these vehicles not only pose a danger to overloading the slope but also block the line of sight for vehicles exiting the club onto Hiram's Highway. We plan to place a series of big dragon pots with low shrubs in them in this area to afford a better line of sight when exiting the Club and discourage illegal parking there. 遊艇會車用通道 那些常常經過斜坡的人可能已經註意到斜坡牆逐漸退化，尤其是靠近斜坡頂端的地 方。為加強安全，本會的維修隊伍已採取措施，對斜坡牆重新澆築混凝土，以確保 穩固。此外，我們正採取行動，避免車輛非法停在坡頂，這些車輛不僅讓坡頂產生 負荷過重的危險，而且還阻礙車輛遊離開艇會，不能開往西貢公路。我們計劃在這 一地區放置帶有培植植物的大龍雕紋的花盆，防止非法停泊和有助清理障礙物。

Caps installed on all piles 船用樁帽已安裝

Marina pile long-term replacement project We are currently waiting for the draft AECOM tender document for the GI works, which will subsequently be sent out to qualified contractors to get quotes for conducting the GI works. The GI works should then tell us what the seabed's current status is around the existing piles, which facilitates the detailed design work of the long-term pile xqcomplete pile replacement project is being scheduled after the PRL renewal to ensure a) we have a lease and b) we can ensure a comfortable cash flow for this project. 長期項目 我們目前正在等待AECOM的場地勘探工程投標文件的草稿，該文件將隨後發送給合 資格的承建商，以獲得工程的報價。此工程將告訴我們樁柱在海底的狀況，這有利 於長期替代工程的詳細設計工作。在安裝臨時樁帽後，我們也會和政府續「私人遊 樂場地契約」，並安排長期換樁工程，以確保，第一，我們有契約；第二我們能確 保這項工程有充裕的流動資金。

Pontoons and marina ramp access The good news is that, according to the Building Department's (BD) BRAVO online building records, the Government has already acknowledged the BA14 in respect of the marina, including the pontoons and the access ramp. This means that they have been acknowledged as 'building works not resulting in a new building' and as classed as Additions and Alterations (A&A) works to the existing buildings. Why is this good news? This means we do not require a BA13 (which would otherwise be required to complete building works resulting in a new building and an application for a permit to occupy such building (OP). In short, what we have in terms of the pontoons and access ramps is OK to have there. 浮台和碼頭斜坡通道 好消息是，根據屋宇署「百樓圖網」在線建築記錄，政府已承認碼頭關於浮台和碼 頭斜坡通道的核證——「無建成新建築物的建築工程或街道工程竣工證明書」（表 格BA14）。這意味著我們能對現有建築的進行加 或改建工程。為什麼這是好消息？ 這意味著我們不需要「建成新建築物的建築工程竣工證明書及申請佔用該建築物的 許可證」（表格BA13）。簡而言之，我們不需要擔心現時的浮台和坡道了。

Refurbishment of toilets & changing rooms We are obtaining quotes for the much-needed refurbishment of the members' toilets, changing rooms and their ventilation systems. In the meantime, we are also looking into adding a portable shower and toilet block suitable for Ops staff and contractors (until a purpose-built one is built in the proposed Club Annex). This will also provide adequate facilities for staff in the meantime and facilitate the members' toilet and changing rooms being kept for members' use only. 翻新洗手間和更衣室 我們正在為急需翻新的洗手間、更衣室和通風系統獲取工程報價。與此同時，我們 也在考慮增加一個適合運營人員和承建商的便攜式淋浴和洗手間，作臨時之用，本 會的工作人員也能使用上述設施，直至本會在其他附屬建築物建造相同設施。這樣 便可以為會員保留專用的洗手間和更衣室。

Enhancing energy efficiency Rene is working with Smart Energy Connect, CLP to explore the installation of solar panels and other energy-saving options at the Club. Once a proposal for such has been approved by GenCom, PWC would then oversee this new project. 提高能源效率 Rene正與“Smart Energy Connect”（中電控股旗下提供能源管理方案及服務的線上平 臺）合作，探討在會所安裝太陽能板和其他節能方案。一旦這項提議得到委員會的 批准，規劃及工程委員會將負責監督這個新項目。

Racing PS It's great to get back out racing on the water again, and thanks to Collin for being such a great skipper and to all the crew on Outrageous for putting up with me. The Dubois 43 is a totally different kettle of fish to the Beneteau 32.5 I am used to racing on (and indeed comes with another kettle … of rum). So now I feel like a little fish on a big boat, with so much still to learn again—and that's the fun bit. 帆船比賽 再次回到水上比賽真是太好了！在這裡，我想感謝船長Collin，感謝對我諸多包涵的 船員。Dubois 43船隻與我常航行的的Beneteau 32.5船隻完全不同(而且Dubois 43上還 有酒喝)。我覺得現在自己就像大船上的一條小魚，非常渺小，還有很多東西要學， 這正正是我覺得有趣的地方。

Kung Hei Fat Choy to you all with the best wishes and good health for the coming Year of the Ox! I was just re-reading my message from the March 2020 Hebe Jebes, one year ago, and realised that we live in a very different world now, still being held hostage by a virus that turned into a global pandemic. In the meantime, our watersports and boating facilities have reopened, and the restaurant can now stay open until 10 pm with four persons seated at one table. We are not quite there yet; therefore, you must still scan the “LeaveHomeSafe” QR code or register your personal details whenever entering and leaving the Club. All our operational and frontline staff, as well as the volunteers from Sailability, will undergo a COVID-19 test once every 14 days, on a compulsory basis, as per Government instructions.

Golf Golf courses have reopened, and the Hebe Haven Golf Society was established late last year.

We are still looking for more members to join so we can enter the inter-club competitions and book tee-times as a group. If you are interested in joining, please email Fansy Lo ea@ hhyc.org.hk. PS: you don’t have to have an official handicap to join.

Book swap corner Although a bit smaller now, we still have our little Book Swap Corner in the restaurant, where you can borrow books to read and where members can leave books they have read and want to pass on to others to enjoy.

Member referral programme On 1 January 2021, we introduced a Membership Incentive Programme where members are encouraged to introduce new members to the Club. Once the application is successful, the proposer will be rewarded with a two-month subscription fee waiver. Contact Jessica Yau, our Membership Manager, for more information jessica.yau@hhyc.org.hk.

Website To provide you with better user experience on the club website surfing and develop a more user-friendly, optimised online interface (especially in today’s digital era!), we are soon to kick off the Website Revamp project. I am sure by getting this makeover; members will find it easier to navigate online and stay abreast of all the Club’s news.

We (at last) have several exciting events on our sailing calendar, which provided government restrictions still accommodate, will be going ahead in the coming weeks: • HHYC will be the host venue for the HKSF Festival of Sports (20 – 21 March) • Sailing and Multi-Activity weeks will resume (throughout March and April) • San Miguel Saturday Series (6 March and 17 April) • International Women’s Sailing Festival (21 – 30 May) • The Annual Sailors Award Night (17 March) Last but not least, may I take this opportunity to thank those who have spent the time and effort to fill out the Members Survey, which was concluded in February. My Experience Sailing in Japan 我在日本航海的經歷

Transitioning from Hong Kong to Japan was difficult considering my family and I have lived in Hong Kong for almost six years. It felt very inconvenient moving to a new country whilst also dealing with the beginnings of a global pandemic, as it did not allow me to quickly find a new sailing club. As such, I was off the water for 7 to 8 months which was very stressful for me considering sailing has become one of those things I can't live without.

However, during this period I was able to analyse the weather and how different the seasons were in Japan. During the winter it can drop below 0 degrees and during the summer it would be up to 40 degrees with 80-90% humidity. The winter months are the best for sailing as the wind would be very strong, around 18 knots gusting 25 knots, on some days and you could see the white caps on the waves. During the summer the wind and waves would be on and off but there would always be a sea breeze. Unlike Hong Kong, which made me very excited to start sailing.

My first day at Hayama Marina was on 5 July, just halfway through the summer holidays. I was quite nervous considering it was my first time sailing since I left Hong Kong. I thought I had forgotten most of my training from Alfy and Antonio but once I got on the water everything came back to me and in practise races I would often be beating the Radials in my 4.7!

Sailing in Japan is a great opportunity for me considering the strong current and wind that I could practice on. Therefore during the summer I would train both Saturday and Sunday enjoying the big waves and strong wind. Hayama is a very beautiful place to sail, on a clear day Mount Fuji can be seen amongst the mountains. Shrines, temples and beaches are all the things that can be seen on the water.

Towards the end of the summer holidays the sailing club invited me to join them to take part in the Japanese National Championships in November. I immediately accepted the invitation and was more than excited to start racing and see my ranking here in Japan. The Nationals would be my first race since the Laser Trials @RHYC in September.

The National Championships is a big deal in Japan. Unlike Hong Kong, you have to be invited by the committee according to your ranking in previous races. However, due to COVID all the pre races leading up to the Nationals were postponed, therefore sailors were nominated by their sailing club and my coach thought I was more than qualified to take part. So myself and two Radial sailors, Malibu and Keichiro, went to the Nationals.

The Nationals took place in Tsu Harbour, Mie Prefecture, close to Nagoya and a five hour drive from home. My experience in Tsu was rather disappointing. The first day of racing was 28 knots gusting 35 knots making it too windy for over 200 people to sail. That said we spent the entire day waiting as the forecast suggested the wind would drop early afternoon. Which it eventually did but was still a solid 20 knots gusting 25+ knots. The committee decided to send only the Radials out whilst the 4.7 and Standards watched from the harbour wall.

Unfortunately, my friends Malibu and Keichiro, struggled on the conditions and didn't do so well, but at least they got on the water, which is more than I did that day.

The following day the wind was 0.6 knots gusting 3 knots making it too light to sail.

Although the committee did send us out. We managed to start one race however, one of the two laps planned, took over an hour, so the race was cancelled. We ended up bopping around for another hour waiting for wind until the committee cancelled the day. So not a good day for me, but good conditions for my dad to go paddleboarding. He spent more time on the water that day, than I did.

Finally, the last day provided perfect conditions, 15 knots gusting 20 knots.

The committee only ran three out of the possible nine races, so not ideal for a Nationals at all. The committee set a Olympic-size windward leeward course.

I had three good starts and my upwind was good, rounding the top mark in the top five however, downwind was tricky with strong gusts, resulting in many people capsizing. Fortunately I managed to remain upright on all three downwinds but I did lose a few places, so more work to be done here. Overall I finished 9th and was the 4th Girl in the Laser 4.7 category. More than anything it was nice to finally get on the water and compete in my first race in Japan and the Nationals for that.

The Nationals is one of a series of regattas that account towards the Japanese National Ranking. There are three more regattas in the series Enoshima, Wakasu, and Hamamatsu. The races are spread out all over Japan which is very exciting as Japan is such a big country. Travelling domestically is great to explore and discover new places to sail.

If I am in the top three girls overall, I will qualify for the Japanese National Team and will go to the Worlds in Ireland this year, subject to COVID.

Although I'm having a great time in Japan I miss Hebe Haven, the Dragons, Afly, Antonio, Rob and the Nasi Goreng. I hope this year the Dragons will be able to travel to Japan to compete with me in some of the regattas. See you then!

Eric’s Retirement Eric 的退休信 12 January 2021 Dear Adam After seven years on the committee boat (CB), six years in the Rules Working Group, five years attending meetings and three years doing the Boat of the Year (BOTY) work, it is time for me to retire from the Sailing Committee. I originally got involved with volunteering on the Frasier Doig so as to be around the Club while Nikki was crewing regularly on Vixen. And after CK had been after me several times to try it! But for various reasons Nikki hasn’t been able to race for a few years, and now, new projects and additional work commitments in 2021 will make it unfeasible for me to continue trekking up to Sai Kung for another year.

I am proud of my contributions to the committee and the Club. I estimate I made over 150 appearances on various CBs over the years, averaging about 22 per year. Lesley did a great job organising Rob Lamb’s RO seminar years ago which helped generate a new generation of CB regulars including myself and Nigel. After Mark Newman told me he did seven years on the CB I kidded with him that I would do the same, but of course I knew I could never match his incredible record which must be north of 200 appearances, mostly as RO. I also enjoyed working with Cabbage, Simon, Nicole, Bridget, Rob and yourself to help produce over 100 race documents and two sets of SSI. Coordinating race results with Pearl, Cynthia, Vivian, Shentin, Sharkey and Queenie has also been fun. Tallying results on Bridget’s BOTY worksheet for three years has been another interesting project.

There is growing focus in the sporting world on equality of opportunity and gender balance issues are now top of the sailing agenda. 體育界越來越關注男女平等和性別平衡，這些議題也成為帆船運動界別議程上的重中之重。

The World Sailing Organisation is working towards gender balance at all levels of the organisation. In 2024 Paris Olympic Games, national teams will be gender equal.

Sailing will include mixed kiteboarding, 470 dinghy, 49’er skiff, Nacra 17 foiling multihull and a mixed-two-handed, offshore race. Women will meet competition standard to be there and will have the same opportunity to compete in events as men. What does this mean for Hebe Haven Yacht Club?

Sailing is a sport that is adventurous, challenging, fun, social and more. The outdoor experience lifts your mood and there is something for everyone. Individual challenge or a team working together. As a sports club our aim is to provide opportunities for everyone to get out on the water. Currently we are looking to increase the participation of women at the club. There are opportunities at all levels and we want all members to encourage and bring girls and women from their family and friends to sail.

What makes the biggest challenge for a woman to sail? Any limitations? 對女帆船運動員來說，最大的挑戰是什麼？又有什麼限制呢？

The biggest challenge for women in sailing is to get on a boat. Poor perceptions of ability and strength mean women end up buying their own boats in order to get sailing. This is especially true of racing boats. Many women in sailing have experienced discrimination at some time. This ranges from isolation and harassment, being treated as less competent, not receiving the same opportunities and level of support as male sailors and being stereotyped by gender.

When rules are changed, as in the Volvo Ocean Race 2018 (VOR), women are included and participation by women increases.

Stereotypes are challenged when women are seen to be in tough conditions, playing their part and winning. The limit to women in sailing is that we accept the status quo and do nothing to encourage and increase their participation.

一旦世俗規則開始改變，情況就不一樣了。例如在沃爾沃環球帆船賽2018， 大賽容許女性參與，提高女性的參賽比例。當人們看到女性即便處境艱 難，依舊能發揮自己的作用並取勝時，人們對女性的成見就會受到挑戰。 若要説女性目前參加帆船運動的限制是什麼，那可能是如果我們繼續接 受男女不平等的現狀，不採取任何行動鼓勵、支持更多女性投身帆船運 動，將會加固成見、加深限制。

Is this a new trend in the sailing community? 更多女性投身帆船運動界是最近的趨勢嗎？

Women have sailed on boats and played a role on and off the water at yacht clubs for a long time despite being in a minority. HHYC has a small percentage of women actively participating in our sailing activities and on our committees. What’s new however is the promotion of a full gender balance by the world’s leading sports associations.

We have some way to go to be ready for this at HHYC and in Hong Kong. Our current participation statistics are not monitored (which is one of the proposals being made). At a glance we have 10 - 20% participation by girls and women across our sailing fleets, club teams and club committees.

How should we promote this, based on your experience? 根據您的經驗，我們應該如何推廣?

The World Sailing Trust from its Strategic Review into Women’s Sailing in 2019 made several recommendations.

Firstly, policies have to be in place and supported by clubs to promote gender equality. Space has to be created for women to participate in sailing at all levels and this can be supported by all club members. Women also have to be involved at all levels of the management of sailing and at our clubs.

World Sailing are launching a new programme— ‘Steering the Course’, a women's sailing festival to be held worldwide in 2021. Supported by the IOC Development Fund, ‘Steering the Course’ aims to introduce women and girls across the globe to the sport of sailing, as well as encourage alternative pathways for those already within the sport, such as coaching or officiating.

Held over a 10-day period across two separate events—one in the Northern and the other in the Southern Hemisphere—the festival will bring together sailing communities from all backgrounds, with events taking place in multiple countries at the same time. From dinghies to keelboats and windsurfing to kiteboarding, all disciplines are welcome to be part of the festival.

At HHYC we are looking at activities and events that encourage and incentivise participation by women and girls. This includes mixed teams as well as women’s events. For younger members we intend to introduce ‘I Can’ sailing for girls, as a weekly social, after school event to encourage youngsters onto the water supported by interested club members.

Female Para Sailor

In 2014, I participated in the Asian Paralympic Games, where I got to know the sailing team that represented Hong Kong for the first time in the grand competition.

It was then that I learned about sailing. After that, I signed up for the annual 24-Hour Charity Dinghy Race by HHYC. Since then, I have been fumbling around with sailing and am now a member of the sailing team.

2014年參加殘亞運，當年是射擊運動員的我，認識了當年首次 代表香港出戰殘亞運的帆船競賽隊，從那時開始我才知道有 帆船比賽。 殘亞運過後,適逢西貢白沙灣遊艇會舉行每年度的24小時小帆 慈善賽,為了支持航能和帆船競賽隊,我和射擊教練一起參與

The journey from sailing for leisure to racing in professional competitions was surprisingly smooth. Thanks to the big family at Sailability, giving me precious opportunities to be part of it. With careful guidance from my coach and my teammates' encouragement, I have acquired knowledge in various aspects.

Although there was an occasional obstacle, it soon became a driving force, and my love for sailing gradually became a weekly event.

In recent years, due to the influence of the epidemic, sailing activities have been suspended, again and again, the only thing we can do is to follow the coach's strategies and practise. We continue to study and revise the concepts we learnt and prepare for the competition. We hope that the epidemic will soon pass, and everything will return to normal.

Compared with shooting sports, sailing requires so much more skill and knowledge that I regretted not paying attention to geography class back in school. As we know, the 10m air pistol shooting competition takes place indoors, but sailing is an outdoor activity and the physical energy it consumes is extensive. Being a qualified sailor requires a flexible mindset to cope with unexpected changes, especially in a race.

Back then, I was a blank sheet of paper when I first came to sailing. I merely wanted to immerse myself in the joy of sailing and feel what it was like to ride with the wind and waves!

As time passed, I gradually realised that my passion grew enormously, but my sailing knowledge did not.

I knew that I had to work harder so that I could make it to the international levels.

回想當年初接觸帆船的 我 是 一 張白紙，是 一 名 參 與 者，目的 是 享 受 帆 樂，感 受 什 麼 是 乘 風 破 浪！不知不覺中地成長， 漸漸 發覺自己對帆船仍 很 幼 稚，各方 面 都 有 所 不足，要倍加努力，才可 踏出國際！ 我可說得上是懂得游泳， 但 對置 身於茫 茫大 海，

I can swim, but at the same time, I fear the vast ocean. I used to be terrified of how blustery it was around Sham Wan and Ocean Park, and I also found a 2.4MR quite hard to handle.

To step out of my comfort zone, I did make efforts in various aspects.

I decided to participate in the 2.4MR competition held in multiple bay locations, so I plucked up courage and joined regional competitions (e.g., the bay competition in the south of Hong Kong). After all these challenging journeys, I came to realise that if we have faith in ourselves, we can overcome anything that seemed impossible.

We sailed the boat from Pak Sha Wan to Sham Wan and other southern bays to compete in the race. I thought I would not have made it.

Since the first Southeast Asian Sailing Championship in 2018, I have been making efforts to reach higher. A few months ago, I won the tournament 303 Solo Sailing organised by HHYC, which was a huge confidence booster. For the present time, I will devote all my attention to practices and skills improvement and go beyond my limit!

Sailability Round Up 航能香港總結

by Kay Rawbone As we started our 2021 journey calendars were being prepared and there are many exciting things to look forward to i.e. Hong Kong Race Week (fingers crossed this will go ahead), HKSF Festival of Sport, HHYC Regatta, ABC Southside Regatta, Bart’s Bash and the 24hr Dinghy Race. I’m sure many of our sailors will also join other racing opportunities at the club as they arise.

Our Tier 2 Para Sailors will definitely participate as they hoping to make our Para Racing Team sometime soon!

Steering the Course—Women’s Sailing Festival 21 – 30 May 2021 To show our support of World Sailing’s Strategic plan 2020 – 2023, which looks at increasing diversity and inclusion, we will join with Hebe Haven Haven Yacht Club and other sailors in the Northern Hemisphere and hold a 10-day Women’s Sailing Festival. We need more women and girls on the water in various capacities —sailing, instructing, coaching, race management, volunteering and this is one of the ways to tempt them into the sport. If you are interested in supporting Sailability’s participation (we have many roles to fill – not just sailing) or know anyone irrespective of age, gender or ability who would like to have their first sail in our very stable boats, please contact me kay@sailability.org.hk. Hansa World Championships 2021 We are also looking forward to participating in the Hansa World Championships to be held in October 2021 in Palermo, Scicily. Sailors joining this ‘Open Championships’ from Hong Kong will be of mixed ability and will sail in the Hansa 303 and Hansa Liberty classes. All regattas we participate in this year will be used to provide ranking for World Sailing as we continue our quest for the re-instatement of sailing in the Paralympics. We will be reporting on the sailing successes of our sailors in future issues of the Hebe Jebes—watch this space.

2021年漢莎世錦賽

Media Media coverage is important for both community and global awareness of what Sailability HK does and we were very happy in 2020 to have hit the SCMP headlines three times and also been in the Apple Daily. We also participated in an International webinar hosted by HFW to work towards the re-instatement of sailing into the Paralympics, an RTHK1 interview which has brought in new local volunteers, and in December we were featured on TVB’s Pearl Report. On the home front we now have our own Media Team (all volunteers) who work to keep our FB and IG up to date. Our website also continues to receive plenty of hits from around the world.

Social Media—getting the message out!

During 2020 some of our volunteers focused on getting our message out to the community via social media. Despite periods of sailing inactivity due to COVID restrictions, we made a posting on Facebook every five days on average in 2020 and from September onwards half of our posts were bilingual in Chinese and English.

The Facebook posts that were most commented on in 2020 were the tributes to Mike Rawbone in August when over 160 people were moved to leave a comment or remark. One of the most shared posts was a video made by a group of disabled people which included some wonderful drone footage of Hebe Haven. Other popular topics included Herbert Spedding and his art work, the re instatement of sailing to the Paralympics, the restoration of three Enterprise dinghies, and the Scallywag programme with its diverse range of participants. The Scallywag Foundation Regatta on 31 Oct – 1 Nov was the subject of five posts in four days as people shared all their race day photographs with us!

At the time of writing, 26 January 2021, Damien Seguin was fighting for an unprecedent intense finish of the Vendée Globe race around the world. The skipper of the APICIL sponsored boat has already achieved a remarkable exploit in this race, affectionately known as the “Everest of the Sea”, being the first ever Paralympic Sailor to participate. Following his gold medal at the Paralympic games in Athens (2004) and Rio (2016) and silver medal in Beijing (2008) he is now entering the ‘legend of sailors’ who have participated in this very challenging Vendée Globe race.

The three Paralympic medals as well as five world champion titles makes him one of the most awarded sportsman in France.

Damien soon started to engage in solo races around the world. After several attempts on Figaro Race and Class 40, he chose IMOCA and its prestigious race: Vendée Globe.

To prepare himself for this epic race, he used the principles that contributed to his previous successes: careful selection of a skillful team and a great rigor to control every detail. He rounded Cape Horn in the 4th position (out of 33 boats). The skipper then moved up to the Class 40 (a 12-metre long monohull), competing in a series of races, with transatlantic passages as well as two Route du Rhums in 2010 and 2014… determined and constantly striving to excel, the man who has spent years convincing others that his handicap is not an obstacle in his bid to immerse himself in the domain of able-bodied sport, is now taking on a huge challenge: the Vendée Globe.

Mobilised for disability The APICIL Group and its members, APICIL Provident and Intégrance Mutual Insurance, specialists in supporting less able-bodied persons and dependents, have chosen to support the skipper Damien SEGUIN in his next challenge: to take the start of the Vendée Globe. The APICIL Group’s commitment to the support and inclusion of less able-bodied persons is one of the main focuses of its social welfare policies. This commitment translates as support for numerous associations, which are notably involved with less able-bodied athletes. One objective: to support the development of sports practice at every level and for everyone. Scuttlebutt—16 January 2021 The highly experienced offshore racer Yoann Richomme is among those who know Seguin best, having sailed with him off-and-on over the past 10 years before helping him to prepare Groupe APICIL for this race. Richomme is quite honest about the fact that his friend’s performance has surprised even him. He points out that Seguin’s project does not have a big budget and he did not have many people helping him modify his boat and prepare it before the start of the race.

“The goal within two months before the start was really to finish this race,” Richomme told the IMOCA Class. “I can tell you there was no other objective. Of course, Damien was going to try and do his best but, for us, it was all about reliability—we weren’t expecting him this high in the ranking.”

Richomme offered a fascinating insight into how Seguin sails. He says the Frenchman, who is based in Port-La-Forêt, has not adapted the hardware on his boat to himself but has adapted himself to the hardware. The only exceptions being the cockpit coffee grinder winch, which has a custom-made slot for his left forearm, and a small gizmo Seguin has developed to help him empty the contents of packets of freeze-dried food.

The key is his own ingenuity in finding ways to get jobs done that able-bodied sailors can accomplish without a thought. “For example,” explains Richomme, “he can tail a halyard, as if hand-over-hand. It is hard to see a difference compared to a sailor with two hands.

It is his competitiveness that has come to the fore in this Vendée Globe when we have seen Seguin push day-after-day. Richomme says his friend can often get himself into the “red zone” with exhaustion because he works so hard on his boat. “But he is a fun personality to be around,” he said. “We laugh about his handicap and about everything else in the world—he always has a good attitude and he is very positive.”

Winches controlled by a small joy stick will operate sails and steering. The joystick control can be hand, chin or even foot operated. It`s the waiters at our beloved yacht club whom I think should earn some credit.

Good waiters can recognise your face instantly—“Good afternoon Mr Smith, lunch today, wish to sit here?” Do you realise that our faces are now almost completely blocked by our masks, and for those who wear a hat because you don`t want too much sun, or because you want to hide your face for some reason, you are left with 20% or less of your face exposed for recognition. Let me tell you a secret; our waiters recognise the way we walk. Mind you; they are well trained.

Don`t ever think of naming yours COVID, despite the fact that it was awarded the most popular word in 2020 in the dictionary world; you might end up sailing alone. That would be sad, wouldn`t it? Don`t drag your feet on the deck, skipper!

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Training Course If you had read my last article, the whole world knows by now I almost quit my J80 Keelboat training. I have found myself not being able to adhere to instructions completely. While I took our yacht club`s Powerboat Level 2 training course, I had had a hard time reversing. Our beloved coach Mark Sir (“borrowed” from Sailability) said: “Well, let me see, I think I`ll teach you the way I teach students with special needs.” It worked. I passed the course and was given a licence beautifully filled in and signed on behalf of RYA by Rob Allen, our beloved Sail Training Manager. I`ve got my licence framed rather than tucked in my wallet because if you admire Rob`s handwriting, you can imagine him found on his off days in some desert examining historical encrypts in long lost Babylonian tunnels. (Cousin Rob, I promise not to mention you in future articles, cheers.)

My adventure of learning experiences would include making a tricky U-Turn on the first day of my driving lessons—the car ended up in a snow-filled ditch. The instructor and I were caged inside the Volkswagen beetle, at 45 degrees, sitting on a piece of rock, probably the size of a bean bag. The instructor wanted to throw me out, but he couldn`t open the door. I was scared; but I bravely thought, if I were to enrol in an astronaut programme, the people at Cape Canaveral would let me skip orientation.

Shortly thereafter, a lady in a cowboy hat (probably an Ewing from Texas) stopped her heavy-duty pick-up truck by the highway, and walked down the slope with a thick rope probably belonging to a hangman and said, “I can pull you out!” The instructor calmly spoke to me at the end of eight lessons, “Well David, I have to tell you that you can manage the car well (it was a manual one, with a gear stick and a clutch pedal), but you don`t seem to manage the roads.” I was fired!

Planning and Works It`s no secret that we are going to have an access lift somewhere next to our “drinking water” basin. The lift will swiftly take you from the ground level to the veranda of our restaurant. Without consulting the engineers, I suspect the ride should be no more than 60 seconds.

Since this is such a novelty in our club, you will be tempted to go for a second ride for those who do not seem to be getting the hang of it. If there`s a line-up for the use of our new elevator, and be sure that we are all good sailors, who abide by etiquette, that no one will jump the queue.

I know what you are thinking, no, you won`t be given any “FastPasses” like those at Disney; and it doesn`t matter whether you are paying your monthly dues on time. It`s all over the news that the Government intends to widen the Hiram`s Highway.

Despite our objections, there may be a four-lane highway right above our necks.

I love ice-cream. The truth is that my family and I have been patronising our restaurant`s ice-cream ever since I became a member—that says a lot about boosting F&B sales. The proper way to enjoy your scoop of icy alpine dairy is to put it on top of a cone; forget about the paper cups and plastic spoons, please help save the planet. I had a bad dream the other night: this man was wearing a clownlike red nose with holes in it probably from having been bitten in a pillow fight and parking his merry-go-round music truck right beside our yacht club`s vehicle entrance. That explains why Hiram`s Highway needs to be widened. Anyone of you walk with stamping feet? You are hired as a bouncer. No, give the ice-cream man a break, he used to be a high stakes stockbroker, COVID made him unemployed.

Shh, shh, I had a peep at the building plans. There will be a pedestrian subway which will run across and under the new Hiram`s Highway. For those love walking beneath the earth’s surface, the subway will bring you to the doorsteps of our beloved yacht club. The end of the tunnel to our pedestrian entrance will be the length of the smallest dinghy from looking at the plans. I can imagine the workmen are probably dressed like the Village People (the band in the ’70s) in macho outfits, lacking proper supervision, while the engineer, who has had too much whiskey the night before, is dozing off and allowing the cowboys to over-drill the tunnel wall.

What happens is this: some unwelcome fellows got into our beloved yacht club premises because the workmen extended the subway by mistake. They later found out that the engineer had faked his credentials to get hired for the job. In fact, the engineer was a producer in some sort of Prison Break TV series, but he got kicked out of the Hollywood studio for having the inmates caught (in the last episode).

We flew from Hong Kong to Ipoh to rejoin the boat on 3 December and, with help from the marina, from there by road in a van to the marina at Pangkor.

At Ipoh airport, our baggage gave Customs pause for thought. In retrospect, the silver foiled Christmas cake and numerous bags of flour did look rather suspicious.

There was a brief moment when it looked like the Christmas cake was going to be dissected by Customs, but fortunately our crestfallen looks and perhaps the faded yachtie T-shirts and lack of ‘bling’ in our sartorial presentation, saved it from this fate.

Stepping out of the cold, air-conditioned van three hours later at Pangkor and into the hot tropical evening brought a thump of deja vu. Fortunately, we had decided upon a few nights in air conditioned comfort at the nearby marina apartments, while we got ATE ready.

Arriving late in the evening, we couldn’t resist a peek at the boat. At the dock, we were delighted to see Até looking smart and ready for the next leg of our journey to Phuket. Our Australian friends, Nick and Sharron were also there, on their catamaran Cheetah. It was a happy reunion that night at the beach restaurant, where we recounted past cruising adventures and discussed future plans. We had been in touch with Nick and Sharron since they announced their intention to sail from Australia and spend Christmas in Phuket, but the rendezvous still felt slightly unreal.

The next morning found us late to arise and thence to muscle-up to that favourite of Malaysia, the big buffet breakfast. Spicy dried fish, peanuts, roti chennai, lentil dahl, curries and much more. We eventually emerged into a wall of heat at about 9.30am to face the task of bringing ATE out of “sleep mode” and get her ready to cruise.

Our first brick wall was that the heads outflow seacock had a sheared valve spindle, aka ‘the loo won’t flush’. With much gnashing of teeth, and the destruction of the heads sole woodwork to get access to the valve, I realised that seacock had frozen open and that the flush problem had been a sticky pump. We knew that we couldn’t fit Até in the marina straddle lift, and so the news that we could at least function until the next haul out was most welcome. Next, the galley tap decided to spout a leak. This required a trip to the shops at Sittiawan, where we also found the Baskin Robbins ice cream shop with a much needed, air conditioned, sugar hit.

The new galley tap was an improvement and served both of the twin basins, and the rebuild of the old heads sole was similarly successful, so it was not all wasted effort. Our next trip was to retrieve the starter motor for our starboard Yanmar engine. A mis-communication meant that it hadn’t been delivered to the Marina after repair and in the six months of our absence, we only had a vague recollection of where we had left it. To top that, the shop had moved (fortunately only next door) and we spent an anxious half hour riffling through the shop’s scruffy array of racking, with hundreds of old electrical parts, before we found our starter motor. Seventy Ringgit later, and feeling lucky, we returned to the marina.

In a few busy days, we had Até re-rigged, re provisioned and ready to go. We had two rendezvous ahead, the first with Kay Patterson in Langkawi and then with our daughter Bonnie in Phuket.

The Pangkor/Lumut area was still in a transition season pattern of light breeze and daily thunderstorms, whilst only 70 miles or so north, the dry northeasterly wind had set in. Leaving the marina. We gybed slowly around to an anchorage in the SW of Pangkor Island. The next morning, we left in a grey, foreboding dawn of dense cloud. Thirty or so miles later the skies changed and by the evening we were off Penang Island, where we needed to arrange Thai tourist visas.

With ‘two plus one’ month visas for Thailand in hand, we had another early start for the sixty-mile leg to Langkawi. This time it was in a nice north east breeze which had Até reaching at a steady 7-8 kts. Main sheet traveler down, and a few rolls in the genoa on the leading edges of the clouds and smartly reversed as soon as the puffs eased. We made excellent progress, sailing past Kay, who was lounging “in the lap of luxury” at the Westin Hotel and who watched us sail into Bass Harbour at about 4pm.

Readjusting to life aboard happened quickly for Juliet and me. After many years of cruising on Até we have made a home aboard in which we both feel comfortable and secure. Até is quite easy to sail and so we can both sail single hand under most circumstances. This means that we both rest well when we need to. We don’t run a strict watch system for short passages, but we can ‘flexi-nap’ and keep fresh. We have an old Raymarine autohelm, which is excellent, and so our energies are directed to sail trim and cooking. The latter is, of course, where the sail trim energy comes from.

Anchored in Bass Harbour, we completed the clearing-in procedures, duly copying out passport numbers, names and dates of birth on the various forms provided. Fortunately, the three offices to visit are located in one building at the ferry terminal. We next made our way to the Westin, to that slightly unreal world of glamorous interior design and dazzling pools. Dinner was sumptuous and thus replete, we came back to our reality; dragging a dinghy down a poorly constructed ramp, the outboard engine refusing to start and finally, rowing home.

A trip to the duty-free shops the next morning provided a comprehensive re stock of rum, beer and wines, plus a new 2HP Yamaha 2 stroke outboard, just in case our nearly new 6HP Suzuki 4 stroke, was beyond repair. This proved to be prophetic.

Kay joined Até the next morning and we returned to the authorities at the ferry terminal to clear the Malaysian paperwork. We broke our trip to Phuket with an overnight stop at the island of Koh Rok. After the opaque waters of much of Malaysia, it was delightful to swim again in crystal clear water and to lounge on white sand.

The numerous islands between Langkawi and Ao Chalong in Phuket offer many good anchorages and daytime stops. Our date in Phuket however meant that we would have to return later to these islands to take them in at leisure. The steady NE breeze again provided fast sailing from Koh Rok and we were soon at Ao Chalong, repeating the CIQ procedures. Here we signed Kay off the crew list, as she was to depart by air for Christmas in the UK, though not before working up a tan, sure to turn heads there in the depths of winter.

After greeting Bonnie at the new Phuket airport terminal, we spent a sociable and pleasant Christmas week in the anchorage at Nai Yang beach, on the Andaman side of Phuket Island. The beach is lined with restaurants but thanks to the trees, still retains its natural feel. We were keen to revisit the Karst island ‘hongs’ of Phang Nga Bay before Bonnie left, and so made our way back down the Andaman coast and north into the bay. We found the NE breeze to be light on the east coast of Phuket and often replaced by a west or NW sea breeze in the afternoons. We were able to sail most of the time and when the NE re asserted itself at night, it wasn’t too strong which made for (mostly) restful nights at anchor.

Provisioning at Phuket is easy, and the availability of car hire meant that we could pick our preferred combination of supermarkets and local markets for fresh produce. Wine and spirits are relatively expensive and so when our Langkawi stocks eventually dwindled, we switched to ‘beer O’clock’ literally and both shed a few pounds!

The Karst hongs in the north of the bay are fascinating to see, and best appreciated by paddling quietly before or after the tourist excursions. Gliding silently on the kayak through a curtain of rock to see a large, enclosed pool is quite magical. Somehow, despite a busy fishing fleet, there is still much aquatic and bird life to be seen. We made several trips to these islands over a period of two months or so, and watched the flight of fruit bats leaving Koh Roi, silhouetted against a full moon.

Our excursions to the eastern bay area, from Krabi south towards Koh Muk were also a highlight. Here, unlike the hongs in the bay, the water is clear and the dramatic rock, jungle and beach scenery is striking.

Koh Muk became a favourite and we found the SE anchorage to be particularly nice. In spite of its exposure to the predominant NE’ly winds of the season, more important was a lee against the westerly chop of the late afternoon and early evening. Better yet, a beach resort on a pretty sand spit welcomed nonresidents to its restaurant. This gave a pleasant break from galley duty.

Koh Muk has a very pretty hong. The hong is entered at low tide by swimming through a cave and dark tunnel, until the loom of daylight ahead reveals a perfect circular sand beach. Encircled by steep limestone cliffs upon which trees and plants cling, the hong is perfectly still at the beach level. A trickle of small leaves falling from above reveal the breeze blowing through the trees on top of the cliffs.

We enjoyed the company of Hong Kong friends Kay and Fran, both visiting for Chinese New Year breaks and made good use of the Phuket Yacht Haven Marina. We found casual berthing at marinas hard to come by in Phuket, but the PYH has an overflow capacity in the adjacent anchorage, which is well protected. The marina also provides a weekly ticket for those at anchor, giving access to its facilities, which was great value. This was particularly useful when taking visitors on and off, because it is close to laundry, car hire and the airport.

Our wanderings through the bay and islands were not entirely free from boat care issues. In particular, the old port Yanmar engine was obviously running short of compression. We had experienced the same problem with the starboard engine two years earlier and, after spending a considerable sum on repairs, had eventually decided to replace the engine. This time we went straight to that solution, ordering a new Beta 20 from the UK, via AME marine at the Phuket Boat Lagoon.

We spent some time on a mooring at PYH waiting for the engine to be delivered, catching up on various chores and arranging medicals.

For me, this involved the removal of a patch of skin cancer and a reminder about the power of the sun in Asia. Our Aussie friends are quite disciplined in covering up when sailing, including wearing long sleeve shirts. A lesson there.

Our intention when deciding to relocate ATE from HK to this region was to dry store her for the longish period when we are either in Hong Kong or the UK. She has for 20 plus years, sat in her warm water mooring though the summers and there is an inevitable losing battle with marine growth and dampness to contend with. We looked at several options in Phuket and Krabi before deciding to go back to Langkawi and haul out at Rebak Marina. Rebak was not the cheapest option, but we liked the fact that there is no restriction to the time that a boat may be left in Malaysia (unlike Thailand) and that Malaysia provides a three-month visa on arrival for visitors. It also made sense in giving us time to enjoy the different and very pretty scenery of Langkawi, whilst preparing the boat at each end of the season. In this way, we could make the most of our two+one-month Thai visas.

There was by this time in early March, a growing concern about the COVID-19 virus which had led to travel restrictions affecting China and perhaps more ominously, trouble brewing in Italy.

We checked out of Phuket at Ao Chalong, saying goodbye to our friends Nick and Sharron. They were homeward bound, heading east on one of the rallies which ply between Australia and Malaysia/ Thailand. We had little idea at the time that the world of travel was about to change radically.

like a giant knife blade leaving a somewhat binary choice of anchorage. We opted for protection from the old enemy, the afternoon westerly chop. To our surprise, the exact opposite occurred and in the space of half an hour whilst we were exploring by kayak, the anchorage boiled up to a fresh NE breeze, leaving Até plunging violently at her anchor. Half an hour later, we sailed around to the west side. Here, strong turbulence created a gusty onshore backdraft which, close as we were to the towering cliffs (to find anchoring depth), was far from restful. The westerly chop was somehow still there!

Set against the discomfort of the breeze at anchor, we were looking forward to a lively sail the next morning, but alas by 10 am we were back to a gentle breeze and the big sails. We had fitted a 4ft (1.2m) prodder to Até, which paved the way for a large Code Zero and a ‘VMG’ asymmetric kite. We use these sails extensively and perhaps the physical demands of handling them constitutes the greater part of our daily exercise. On the plus side, we enjoy the extension to the scope for sailing and the feeling of speed at the top end of their wind range.

At Tarutao, we made a lengthy trip by dinghy up a river to visit a large cave system.

There were some riverside huts and a jetty for visitors, but they had been long abandoned and were slowly being reclaimed by the jungle and elements. There was a Park Ranger station at the river mouth, but it seemed that fishing from kayaks was the main ranger activity and we were not troubled to pay park dues. We had in many places in Thailand been asked to pay park fees, for which a mooring is included.

These were typically levied on a five-day basis, at around 500 Baht. We support this approach, but it is perhaps unduly expensive for single day stops.

The next morning, we were buzzed by a WhatsApp message, from our daughter Bonnie, bearing the news that Malaysia was to close its borders in 24 hours. I suspect that but for this message, we might have discovered this much later in the day when browsing the news and possibly too late to make the border. As it was, there was little time to waste and, to our good fortune, a fresh easterly breeze offered a fast passage to Langkawi.

The next phase of our trip was to be the story of getting to Langkawi and lockdown in Malaysia. Dealing with COVID-19 restrictions and getting Até safely hauled for us to fly home, proved to be a protracted process. Fortunately, Langkawi was a wonderful place and we look forward to returning to these lovely waters.

— 認識我們多一點 — As Sailing Manager, one would assume that Rob Allen has been sailing since he could walk, but that is not the case. Raised in the UK, sailing was not readily available at Rob’s school, except for a few family holidays, he never had any official training on the water until his gap year in Australia.

Upon his return to England, Rob joined a one-year programme at the United Kingdom Sailing Academy in Cowes, taking up sailing and kayaking courses and getting windsurfing and diving qualifications in Barbados, “This opened my eyes to an amazing industry where I have met so many great people and I am constantly learning fun things within the sport,” said Rob. After moving to Hong Kong in 2004, he joined Hebe Haven Yacht Club and has been a crucial part of the Club's development over the past 14 years. As Sailing Centre Manager he has helped mentor and train many junior sailors over the year, “It’s personally very rewarding to see many beginner sailors train, qualify and become our club instructors and coaches.”

Sailing has always been a big part of Sai Kung’s culture, but this year especially has seen a rise in people taking up the sport. “We have seen huge numbers of people take up sailing courses this year, as travel bans have encouraged people to take on new activities to keep them occupied. I also think we have the best sailing location in South East Asia,” says Rob. Along with a rise in watersports fans, the Club was also able to successfully continue its highly-anticipated Annual Open Dinghy Regatta in November 2020. The Regatta included four race courses, accommodating various ages of sailors and levels of competition. This year’s Open Dinghy Regatta is scheduled to be held on 22 & 23 May, which falls over the period of the worldwide sailing event happening this year—Women’s Sailing Festival, Steering the Course.

Whilst it took four attempts to arrange, with COVID-19 restrictions constantly changing, Rob believes, “The Open Dinghy Regatta was one of the best Regatta’s I’ve organised during my time in Hong Kong. The community came together as a team effort, working with 80 volunteer teams daily and made the Regatta an unforgettable event for sailors.”

With the winter season in full swing, Hebe Haven Yacht Club has planned a halfyear sailing and watersports camps for kids, available for both members and nonmembers, as part of its youth programme but is unfortunately suspended due to COVID-19 pandemic. When asked about a piece of advice for winter sailing, Rob said, “You definitely need to wear a wetsuit and appropriate clothing, or you will spend the day shivering and not come back to the Club again as it's not fun to be out there under-dressed.”

This concrete deck has occupancy for 60 boats and has two jib cranes that ensure a very fast and reliable service to members. CLUB UPDATE

Sitting down to write this latest instalment for Hebe Jebes, the Club has finally emerged from the latest sporting lockdown related to COVID. This latest lockdown dates back to late 2020, and it seems like it was last year that the Club held any racing or sail training activities. Which, in fact, it was!

Sporting and social distancing restrictions aside, the weather over the past few weeks has made for fantastic cruising in the waters of Hong Kong. Lunar New Year, in particular, saw exceptional conditions, and several members took advantage of this to sail down to the Soko Islands over the long weekend. This adventure to a seldom-visited part of Hong Kong proved a welcome distraction from COVID. There will be more support for members wishing to cruise the waters around Port Shelter and Hong Kong in the coming months, so standby for further information on this.

Also featured in this issue of Hebe Jebes is an update on Women on Water (WOW) week. This 10-day sailing festival runs from 21 – 30 of May (see page 26).

ADAM GLENDINNING Rear Commodore—Sailing

On 27 and 28 February, Hebe Haven welcomed the Hong Kong Optimist Dinghy Association (HKODA) to hold their annual National Championship regatta. A report on this exciting event for the junior sailors will follow in the next issue of Hebe Jebes.

HHYC will also be hosting the inaugural Hong Kong Match Racing Nationals on the first weekend of April. Both these events are co-organised by HHYC with the HKODA and HKSF, respectively—and a tremendous effort has been put in by the club staff and members to bring both these high-profile events to the Club.

Regular club racing returns at the beginning of March with the San Miguel Monsoon Spring Series. This annual series features eight races run over five weekends featuring a combination of geometric and island courses.

Despite the lack of organised on-water activities at the Club recently due to COVID restrictions, a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes by both members and staff. One of the big projects undertaken was writing the 2021 – 2024 HHYC Standard Sailing Instructions (SSI). These go live very shortly, and a synopsis of the changes contained within will follow in the next edition of Hebe Jebes.

There is a wonderful vibe around the Club with the newly named Sailing Centre (formerly known as the Sail Training Centre) back up and running, the clubhouse staying open until 10.00pm, and club racing returning. For most of us, travel restrictions remain in place for the time being, but our Club provides us with an incredible platform to get out and enjoy the waters of Hong Kong. See you out there.

終於有時間坐下來寫文章。最近政府放寬限制，遊艇會終於解除封鎖。最近一次封鎖 要追溯到2020年末，舉辦航行、帆船訓練等活動已經是去年的事了。

撇開康樂運動和社交距離的限制不談，過去幾週的天氣非常好，是水上活動 的絕佳條件。農曆新年的時候，一些會員利用週末長假乘船前往索罟群島， 這段在香港很少有人探訪的地方的歷險，已載於本期會刊。除此之外，在未 來幾個月，我們將提供更多支援在牛尾海及香港附近水域航行，請會員靜候 通知。 另外，還想大家留意女子帆船節的活動，這是一個為期10天的帆船節，從5 月21日開始至30日結束。 於本月27日及28日，本會將為「香港樂天級帆船協會」籌辦一年一度的全 國錦標賽。初級水手的賽事報告將載於下一期會刊，敬請留意。 遊艇會亦 將於四月第一個週末舉辦首屆「香港帆船比賽」的全國賽事系列。這兩項活 動都是由本會與「香港樂天級帆船協會」及「香港帆船運動總會」合辦，本 會員工和會員都付出了巨大的努力，將這兩項備受矚目的活動帶入遊艇會。 常規的帆船比賽將在三月初與春季賽事系列一起回歸，這個賽事系列會利用 5個週末舉行8項賽事，當中賽事既有短途賽，亦有環島賽。 儘管本會最近組織了一次水上活動，但會員和工作人員仍在幕後進行著許多 工作。其中一個大項目是編寫2021-2024年白沙灣遊艇會的帆船標準指南， 文件很快就會上載至本會網站，下一期的的Hebe Jebe’s亦會刊載指南的概 要。 現在遊艇會漸漸多了活動：帆船中心也已恢復運行，會所將稍後開放，帆船 的比賽逐步回歸。對我們大多數人來說，現時還有出外旅遊的限制，但我們 致力為會員提供一個更好平台，讓我們走出去，享受香港的水域。再會！ Adam

After enjoying Chinese Lunar New Year, it is the time to prepare equipment to get ready to sail into the a coming New Year. Wishing everyone has a safe and delightful New Year.

I want to share some warm reminders to all of you, which are about equipment on your boat and how to deal with signal flares.

According to the "Dangerous Goods (General) Regulations" (DG(G)R)(Cap. 295B) Regulation 4: "No person shall move or cause or permit to be moved any explosives by land or water within Hong Kong except under and in accordance with a removal permit granted by Commissioner of Mines."

Therefore, HHYC cannot provide explosives storage or transport services to members.

The retail suppliers of signal flares usually have licenses for their transport, please contact your supplier and ask them for assistance with handling your signal flares when you need to dispose of them.

Apart from that, we are further enhancing safety on pontoons. I hope all members can pay attention to fire safety, in case of a fire, please give careful consideration to your own safety as the first priority, and notify our staff immediately. The Club has installed fire-fighting equipment on different areas of the pontoons, and the instructions for use are also posted on the fire-fighting equipment.
